Great teacher. Cared about the material and the students. Always made an effort to hear and understand the students point of view, while still defending his own. Recommended.
GREAT CLASS! He is a teacher that really cares about his students. He is very open-minded and will listen to anyone's point of view even if he doesn't agree with it. He is very understanding about what it's like to be a student and overloaded w/ work and takes it into concideration. The final paper is long but you learn a lot from it. HIGHLY RECOM!
He is a great instructor! You really can't slack in his class but it is so interesting and you learn so much that it is worth all the hard work.
Great teacher and listener! Which should be a requirement for teacher nowadays. Not many do that anymore. Will help as much as you allow him. Highly reccomended and great person!
'almost' made me want to read shakespeare (not an easy task, trust me). I liked the way this guy ran a class. Very open. Not mind-numbingly boring. Passionate about the material.

Awesome. This guy changed my life. Openend up a whole new world to me. Will remember my experience in his class the rest of my life. Huge depth of knowledge. Can turn the most asinine comment into something coherent and profound. Take this class. Read deeply and carefully, and be prepared to be blown away every class meeting. You will think you've really got a total grip on it, just to realize you've merely dusted off the cover. Not a class for lightweights or posers. Damn, I wish I could take it again.
Mikolavich is a credit to the teaching profession. He is always willing to meet with you during his office hours, and gives helpful advice when you need it. He's a very smart guy who knows what he's teaching. He's also very funny, humble, and kind. I would recommend him to anybody needing to take english 122, 126, or short story.
Mr. Mikolavich rocks! He's very genuine and passionate about teaching. He also gives very detailed feed backs so it helps the student know what needs more attention.
He is a great teacher, makes you want to write your essays, guides you thru every step of the way,if you stay on task and do what your asked you will pass the class, he is also very willing to meet during office hours for any questions!highly recommened!
Mr. Mikolavich is a very nice teacher with a lot of interesting things to say. He can be really dorky in his lectures, which makes you realize how much he really loves the subject. He gives you a lot of writing tips that are very helpful for his papers and future papers. Highly recommended.
Mr. M is AMAZING. His class is so interesting. His papers are demanding, and you will have to understand the material to stay afloat in class, but the work is never too much to handle. He engages the class in open discussion each day and guides you in discovery rather than just presenting information. TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!
Mikolavich is amazing! He is one of those professors that changes your life, and I will never forget his remarkable lectures. Very smart man and his classes are a must. Honestly, he must be the best professor at DVC. The best part about Mikolavich is that his classes are actually at a college level, challenging your level of thought. GREAT GUY!
He is a true credit to the teaching profession. His class structure is more discussion-based with a little bit of lecture thrown in, but he encourages students to explore the material and really draws the depth out of students. He is organised and thoughtful and a hard case when it comes to grading but is always willing to help you improve.
Nice guy and a fun class, hopefully I'll have a chance to take him again.
I do not have enough positive words in my vocabulary to describe Mr. M. Very insightful, extremely positive attitude and willing to help however he can. He is demanding but makes every class fun. I found him to be very fair, as well. Attend class, speak up and work hard and you'll do great in Mikolavich's class.
Amongst the best teachers DVC has to offer! Mr. M's passion for teaching is evident in every stimulating lecture he gives-which in turn encourages lively debate. He's always available to answer you question during class and office hours, and is an endearing personality. Few teachers have the sheer breadth of knowledge this guy has.
This teacher is not good at all, he thinks that he is but he is not. He says BAD things about the other teachers. He also gives a massive amount of work.
He thinks that he is good but he is not. On the first day of class he asks you to write down who your previous English teacher was and the grade you got. He pretty much said the reason was because he thinks that some of the other English teachers are bad. He also gives a massive amount of work. He said that he looks at his reviews on this website.
He thinks that some of the other English teachers are bad. He said that he looks at his reviews on this website. I think that he puts good reviews about himself so people would take his class, but he is a REALLY BAD teacher. He gives TOO MUCH HOMEWORK.
On essays if he doesn't agree with your opinion he will give you a BAD grade. He tells you on the first day of class that he is hard, says if you can't keep up just drop the class because he is very hard. He also says that he looks at his ratings on this website. I think that he puts good comments about himself, so people would take his class.
Definitely one of the best professors DVC has to offer. Like seriously! He's really passionate about the material, his students, and also teaching. He gives you one on one time when you ask. He opened new doors to me. We read a lot Franz Kafa. I finished that class with a passion for literature! I got a B and my essays were ok, but not great.
Definitely one of the best professors DVC has to offer. Like seriously! He's really passionate about the material, his students, and also teaching. He gives you one on one time when you ask and really listens to your concerns. He opened new doors to me. We read a lot Franz Kafa. I finished that class with a passion for literature!
Hands down best teacher I have ever had. Completely changed my way of thinking. Not in a way of shaping my thinking into the way he wanted, but made my views so much more complex and complicated. His class has effected the way I live my life. Yes, he is challenging. But he's fair. He prefers students disagree with him, but you must support it.
Mr. M is an excellent teacher! He truly wants you to succeed in his class & learn something about literature & yourself. His class is not exactly an easy grade, as he does require you to work. The coursework consists of almost weekly read and response papers & 3 essays. He is a sticker for attendance & timeliness- so be warned!
Mr. M is the best professor I've ever had at DVC and even my current school, a UC. He changed the way I see literature, the world, and even myself. He encourages you to take a deeper more meaningful look at literature and life. His classes are comparable in difficulty to my UC-level literature classes. Prepare to read and write daily. Thanks Mr. M!
Mr. Mikolavich is extrodinary Great! He will challenge you to do your best! He will give you an opportunity to re-write your essays! Come to class prepared and with and open mind! We need more teachers who really are encouraging and passionate like Mr. M. Take his class, if you want to learn!
Mr.M was awesome! I've never cared for this course until this class. Instead of talking at you, he lets the class discuss and bring up issues on our own. Although he gives homework everyday, the assignments are easy. There are only three essays and NO TESTS! I definitely recommend this guy, he made me really enjoy English!!
AMAZING! He really works with each student to improve their writing ability. He allows re-writes for all essays and requires a meeting with him to do the re-write, where he actually HELPS you with your essay. No tests, 3 (4 pg) essays per semester, homework each night, which is normally a 300 word reading response to an article from the text book.
He knows what he is talking about! A challenging grader, but you always have an opportunity to revise your work and fix your mistakes. He is also willing to meet with you to talk about improvements you can make. Overall, if you work hard and are willing to work with him, you'll do just fine!
helpful but a lot of homework and hard to get a good grade on papers.
Oh my god, DVC DOES have good teachers! This is one of the best you'll find at DVC or any UC for that matter. The entire class is incredibly involved in the learning process and everyone is developing a taste for Shakespeare. He can be a difficult grader, but if you want to learn an ass ton, take his class, he's fantastic!
He's an awesome teacher. Very helpful and answers all questions. You have 3 papers during semester & each gets harder as you go but builds off what you previously learned. Book used a lot in beginning then use dies off but need to finish it. Always willing to answer individual questions in office hrs. Don't be late! Really annoys him!!
This professor picks great stories and poems to read. Class is a big discussion session and he really has you analyze the texts to realize things you never saw. Gives great feedback on your essays on how to improve as a writer, including positives and constructive criticism. He is also very understanding and sweet!
BEST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER!!!! Hang in there the first couple weeks and it will get a bit easier. He just want to weed out the students not willing to work. His essay prompts are thought provoking and leave a lot of room for imagination. If you actually want to improve your writing, take his class
GREAT PROFESSOR. Made my first college course (17years out of school-military) interesting. Military Friendly!
awesome guy, loves basketball, really helps you write and helps you with drafts, however, greade VERY hard, but with all his help, its not a hard class overall. high work load but he really seems to care about his students on a personal level and make ou feel important in his class and in the world. awesome guy.
This is an eye-opening class for Shakespeare! Mr. Mikolavich is very knowledgeable, helpful, and he is passionate in teaching and leading us to think further. Make sure you keep up the reading and participate in class discussion. I was so enjoyed in class discussion and hope this class will not be end.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOKs!! i bought them and never used them!! hes a cool guy, just an extremely hard grader. do not take this class and expect to get an A.
He is an amazing professor. If you really want to be a successful writer, you should take his class. In fact, you are given only three essays to write and you get to pick our topic. He is very encouraging your success and potentials. Go and Take his class!
Ya he's one of the professors who has ridiculous standards for grading. He does not teach logic at all (you can tell by his empty, sporadic scrawls all over the board). Material that is not necessary for the class is forced, so absolutely drop if it doesn't interest you.
If i could sit in a room with this guy and pick his brain all day i would. He is absolutely outstanding, i don't even think he knows it. Best ENGLISH Teacher iv ever had by a millions. Best Person iv ever met by billions. Thank you D. Keith Mikolavich! You have made me a better person.
one of the better teachers at dvc. he's engaging and personal but also shows good knowledge of subject matter (all shakespeare!) His guidelines for essays are a little odd when it comes to continuously developing your thesis, even throughout the conclusion. It's doable but tricky. Unless you are a strong essay writer, you will not get an A on them.
one of the better teachers at dvc. he's engaging and personal but also shows good knowledge of subject matter - all shakespeare! His guidelines for essays are a little odd when it comes to continuously developing your thesis, even throughout the conclusion. It's doable but tricky. Unless you are a strong essay writer, you will not get an A on them.
He was so great, I took him twice. Besides caring about his students, Keith has rare ability to create a community in his class room. I thought it was a fluke the first time I took his class, but the same thing happened when I took Eng 126 and realized it was his teaching technique. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
HARD GRADER. Ouch! I got consistent B papers in 122 and got a B in 122, but after receiving my paper's grade and feedback I'll be extremely lucky if I get a B in his class and that's leaving my admiration of English behind! His 126 class is centered around Shakespeare which is fine because he helps you break down the text and understand it.
Great teacher take him! He truly cares for each and every one of his students, wanting us to become better writers through workshops and podcasts where he breaks down how he graded your essay. Class is mostly discussion, but he makes Shakespeare FUN through movie clips, skits, interesting topics, and how he applies it to modern day scenarios.
PHENOMENAL TEACHER! TAKE HIM! He brings personalism and enthusiasm to every lecture and really wants you to learn. His office hours are very helpful and only 4 essays are written. They are hard essays but very thought provoking. I love his class and the atmosphere. Fantastic experience, hands down.
Actual Instruction - not just assignments! If you want to Learn to Write And Think, take Mikolavich. It's a writing class, so you write! And work through each phase. Don't miss the class-time. Its invaluable, and you get what you put into it. Going out of my way to get him on all of my requirements.
He is definitely one of my favorite English teachers after taking his course. I never had any interest in writing for a career, but he totally helped me see my love of writing. He is a great teacher and very interactive, he doesn't lecture which is great. It is a writing class, so there is a lot of writing, but its a lot more enjoyable.
Mikolavich is a good teacher. During lecture you can see that he is passionate about his subject. He is a tedious grader and grammar is really important. He likes to give feedback after the final essays. Class is interesting especially if the class is willing to participate. Reading is not bad about 10-15 pages per week. I would recommend him.
I took his 122 class the first semester I was at DVC and the A I got in his class is by far the proudest A I've gotten in my college career. NOT an easy class. He will make you think, challenge yourself, and grow as a writer. Take him if you want to develop better critical thinking skills and actually learn something applicable from a class.
Such an inspiration, constantly giving his students something to ponder. He was engaging and extremely intelligent and open to new ideas about the text we were studying. He is always willing to help his students with ANYTHING, and he really helped hone my skills as a writer. Would recommend him 110%. One of my favorite teachers ever.
Mr. Mikolavich is awesome. Whole class based around a 15 page research project, broken into three smaller projects throughout the semester. NOT an easy class, but I have grown SO much as a writer, critical thinker, and individual because of him. HIGHLY RECOMMEND him. He's always there to help and really wants his students to succeed. A+ professor.
If you don't have near perfect grammar forget this professor. 11 mistakes and you fail. He won't even read anything past the 11th mistake. I went to his office hours and he told me to read it backwards and to go back. When I did he said I should drop. So I did.
Professor M creates a laid back yet fun environment for his students. Don't take his laid back approach as a sign that you don't have to work hard because he really pays attention to who is trying and who is not. You are required to introduce 2 literary works to the class, write 2 essays and turn in a reading log at the end of semester.
Amazing teacher. Mr. Mikolavich is understanding, personal and inspirational. As someone who enjoys writing, I took his assignments as opportunities to research topics I have been interested in. He really takes the time and makes the effort to learn your name, who you are and how to help you succeed and do well in his class. Definitely a must take.
Amazing! Always loved going to class. I took English 253 and I really enjoyed having him as a professor, he's smart, funny, and gives great insight into the readings and really makes the literature come to life. Would highly recommend!
Mr. Mikolavich is a fantastic teacher. He is very invested in his students and wants you to do well. For his Eng 126 class he has you work on a research paper during the entire semester. It is basically worth all of your grade, but he has you do it in steps and develop ideas with the class. If you don't like group discussion don't take this class.
This class was by far the most hardest english class i've ever taken. Super cool teacher but grades really tough. One major 10-12 Research paper project throughout the course. TOUGH GRADER !
First of all, it is NOT an easy class, especially for someone who has trouble with grammar like me. You have to earn your grade. However, Mr. Mikolavich is super. He is inspirational and get you to think. Gives clear instructions and guidelines. He helps me to grow into a much better writer and critical thinker. A+ professor.
Fantastic teacher but you MUST be on time and present to pass. Essays are thought provoking and hard if you don't like to go in depth. Our class got a surprise book a month before school was out for "being a good class." Very engaging class discussions but he takes over with his own thoughts a lot of the time. Not sure if I would take again.
By far my favorite class at DVC. If you want an A, you will have to work for it. The class is extremely rewarding, and you will definitely feel accomplished after the semester is over. Only 1 paper (12-14 pgs) w/4 smaller writing assignments that make up the paper. + 1 presentation on your paper topic. Overall, great professor & interesting class.
Great class! Although he gets off-topic sometimes, he's very knowledgeable. You can tell that he really knows his stuff.
Honestly one of the most helpful english teachers at this college. He's got many years of experience in the classroom and it shows when he engages his class. He engages students less like a teacher or professor and more like an incredibly helpful friend that genuinely wants to teach but also learn about the information you have to offer.
Honestly he is a nice guy but he grades way too hard. The final is a 15 page research paper which is worth a major portion of the grade. First (and last) class I got a C in. Don't take him if you struggle with writing he expects you to be able to write a grad school level research paper not good if you want to get better at writing.
Very helpful, grades esssays somewhat hard. If you make too many grammatical errors he will give you an F on the essay, but you are allowed to redo one essay per semester. He is a really nice guy and encourages exploration of opinions and thoughts. No tests, just essays.
The! Man! Take ANY class from Professor Mikolavich! You will gain insight well beyond all of your years of study combined. If you've been turned off to English classes before, then take this class and see a whole new light!
I am an A student, but still think that his class is the hardest English class ever. Do believe all the positive qualities listed in ratemypro. But here are cons: He expects you to write a grad-level research paper. Late once or twice immediately lose 5% of your grade. DON'T take his class if you are an inter student (or have trouble w grammar)
He is, without a doubt, one of the best English professors at DVC! His classes are enriching and educational :) Plus, his video commentaries of essay assignments are awesome guides!!!
For a person who's planning to take his class, I suggest you to reconsider it again. I'm an A student in every class, but his class is incredibly hard. No matter how great your thesis is, if you have several grammar mistakes, you won't receive an A from him. Late for more than 3 times? ParticipationC. NOExtraCredit. 2 essays, 1 interview, 1 final.
Mikolavich is awesome. He gets so excited by class conversations, and he is super passionate about not just what he teaches, but the way it relates to the world. I am definitely taking him agin. However, he has super high standards and grades on attendance/participation. However, he is really generous with office hours and wants to help.
Dr. Mikolavich is one of those professors that elevates the quality of the whole college. The discussions you have in class train you to be a better thinker, analytical reader, and writer. He is a very tough grader, but all of his comments were extremely helpful. Take his class if you want to challenge yourself to become a better student.
Great but hard teacher. Three essays of about 1500 each. Some daily logs, usually 300 word free write on class topic/discussion. Great class discussions and very open to differing opinions. Kind and welcoming. Come to every class. Also, textbooks were useful but not totally necessary. Grades essays harshly.
Mikolavich is a must take for any student. His class is not easy and will make you work for your grade, but it's worth it for the experience. Very passionate and cares for his students. Most of class time will be spent doing pair/group work discussing readings or your own writings. His class is essentially on how to be better communicator overall
Regardless of how tough was the class, he is a very good professor. He is very willing to spend time with students during office hours and class time to help them on reading papers. He is one of the toughest grader in DVC, but he just want to make sure you to learn and not making the same mistake again. My writing really improved a lot cuz of him
I loved Mikolavich so much. I wish I had more time at DVC so I could take him again. His class was insightful and relevant and you can tell he really cares about his students. He is a pretty tough grader, but it seemed like he was really willing to work with the people who were struggling. Overall, great class. I recommend him to everyone!
I absolutely loved this class. We would come into class, be presented with a contentious issue in American society, and then Mikolavich would navigate through everyone's differing opinions on the matter seamlessly. The class really helped me writing and critical thinking ability. Weekly logs and 3 papers total, so not too bad. Highly recommend!
One of the most rigorous courses I've taken at DVC. Prof no doubt challenges you to help you become a better writer and critical thinker, but if you're not ready to put in the time and effort this class demands, you're probably better off with another class. Lots of articles and editorials to read, plus in- and out-of-class writing. I learned a lot
Prof. Mikolavich is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. He will always be there to help out students and give insight on your work. It is clear that he cares about what he teaches and he really wants to help students expand their minds to think more critically. The essays are tough, but you learn a lot during the process
Keith is an extremely caring english professor that wants his students to succeed. This course was a lot of writing for me but I'll admit it did help me become a better critical thinker. He gives you the freedom to write about whatever topics you want which is nice. Very passionate about english. 3 major essays and your participation is graded.
Mikolavich is arguably the best professor I have ever had. He really cuts through the crap helps you synthesize your thoughts into a coherent piece. He is knowledgeable in his subject and cares deeply not only about the world around us but also about his students. He is a tough grader and has high standards, but I learned so much from him.
Mikolavich hands down is an amazing English teacher. I'm not that great as a writer, but he explains things easily and he'll show you how to improve your writing. If you enjoy talking about controversial issues then this is the class for you, since you get to pick what to write about. He's a tough grader, but he gives great feedback, very caring.
Class was not easy but it was ok. I don't like that he is *very* strict with attendance which reminds me of high school again. Late? Your grade will be heavily penalized. Be prepare for that.
Professor Mikolavich is a real gem. He genuinely wants students to become better writers. Only 3 papers, no tests, no quizzes, little homework (usually just writing in a log/annotating articles). I was a pretty good writer, but his teaching put me through the roof. If you like politics/debatable topics, this is the class to take.
Prof. Mikolavich is a great professor and really knows his literature. The first day he tld us this would be an intense class. He wasn't lying- however as long You do the work (readings, papers-2, participate, meet with him when needed you Will pass. The class is hard, but he really explains the readings. And, Readings are a MUST. Take him.
Very challenging class but one of the only college english classes I've gotten an A in. There's a lot of reading required and a lot of discussion in class, but it's all very constructive and helpful. This teacher really enjoys fresh ideas, if you can come up with an original paper he'll let a few errors slide. Don't skip the peer editing days.
One of the absolute best professors I've ever had. My only regret is that I only took one class with him. Prof. Mikolavich is amazing. He really challenges students to confront new ideas and wrestle with important issues. He pushes you to be your best. I can honestly say that my writing has improved significantly because of him.
Very strict and picky professor. Needlessly so, I believe. He deducts a large portion of your grade for very small errors.
He is a great professor, but, its an extremely hard class that I was forced to drop. You may have done well in English class, maybe you haven't. But overall, your grammar is the what takes upon your grade in the class. Attended every lecture and even came to his office hours quite often. But if you don't meet his expectations in essays, good luck.
Last semester I got an A+ in English. when it comes to him he is a completely different class. He isn't clear on what he wants in his essays. He tells you can fix your essay but doesn't help you so you get the same grade in his eyes. Then he has you keep coming to see him during off hours to work on your essay "to better yourself and your writing".
If you're not willing to put in the work or somewhat passionate about developing your English skills, then this class is not for you. But, if you're looking that a professor that challenges you and wants to see you be more thoughtful in every way, then take his class. This class is not that hard- you just have to be willing to put in the work.
Good teacher. 80% of the grade is based off of 3 essays, but he isn't a hard grader on them as long as it has good content. Most classtime is just having discussions which I didn't find super useful for the class but it was interesting at times. Very forgiving on due dates and allows you to rewrite one of the first two essays if you didn't pass one
Professor Mikolavich really pushes you to do your best and truly cares about you. I already see great improvements in my writing. All the stories and essays we wrote this semester were very engaging and I felt truly motivated to write. Although he is a bit difficult, he is definitely worth taking.
Prof. Mikolavich is one of my favorite professors. He is tough, but he is EXTREMELY caring and goes the extra mile to meet with his students and assist them in any possible way. He will leave a lasting imprint on you.
Took English 126 with Mikolavich . Definitely one of the best professors Ive had at dvc due to the fact that he really cares about his students. Although his grading might seem tough at first its really not that bad. As long as you communicate with him and attend his office hours you will pass with an A.
I really enjoyed his Shakespeare class (and I'm not usually a fan of "older" lit), I wouldn't have wanted to take it with anyone else. He makes it relevant, comprehensible, fun, interesting. If you put in the effort, an A is achievable, and I guarantee you will learn a lot and be left proud of yourself. If you're an English major, don't miss out.
I've never written a review for a professor but he's one of the best profs I've ever had and I highly recommend! You learn so much through daily open discussions about topics in and outside of class. You only have three writing assignments so make them count b/c it's like 80% of your grade. Go to office hours b/c he's always available to help!
I really loved prof mikolavichs class. I think anyone who is good at writing will grow and anyone who needs help will receive it if they ask for it. Clearly very passionate about his job and is open and honest about his own life. I loved how approachable he was and how he created an environment for others to feel safe to share about their lives.
Terrible professor. His notes are impossible to follow. Essays have so many instructions and rules that it stifles individual creativity and thought-processes. He assigns piles of homework, and seems to think his class in the only class you're taking. Do not take a class with this professor.
He gives out way too much homework. Be prepared to read up to 100 dense pages of literature and write up to 1000 words per class.
I'm going to be honest DON'T take this class if writing is not your strength. I had to rewrite my 1st essay and kept getting B's, he has very high expectations and I went to his office hours alot and still struggled. His instructions on essays are unclear and he's harsh at grading. I cried because of how hard his class is, please don't take him.
Gives no feedback that makes sense. For his essays he grades incredibly harsh and he never helps out. He has you visit office hours to work on your essays, but he never gives you guidance on where to lead your essay. Apart from essays, the amount of work he gives out is terrible, he acts as we only have his class!
Amazing prof! Don't listen to any bad reviews if you're an English major looking to transfer to a good school. He even makes Shakespeare fun & easy to understand. He's not an easy A, but he's a fair grader with instructions. Raising hands isn't as important as showing interest. He gets to know students and he'll notice if you're skipping classes.
Very caring about his students, made me feel welcomed from the first week! There were 4 papers, but they were all fairly easy and he gave lots of time to brainstorm topics and sketches for them in class.
He's very caring about his students and will give you good feedback on essays. Although, make sure to have a good relationship or make an effort to talk with him or else he may mark you down just because he doesn't know you exist.
He is much more in-depth with what he looks for in essays than most English teachers are, and it really helps you as a student become a better writer. If you are an okay writer, he will make you a good writer. If you're a good writer, he will make you a great writer. If you want an easy A though, his class isn't for you.
An inspiring teacher, he will give great feedback and support your writing style. His grading is a little unclear sometimes but genuinely cares about his lectures and students. The readings are inspirational and he's very open to new ideas. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Mikolavich is such an engaging guy and know how to make the literature you read interesting and pertain to society today. He is a very understanding person who knows how to help you with your essay skills and enhance them more. He is helpful and understanding so take advantage of office hours. Stay on task with readings and youll be fine
Mikolavich is an incredibly understanding individual who can make literature from ages ago matter and relevant in a way that makes you think: "This is why I am an English major". He facilates discussions that are open and honest, trying to get everyone in. I will agree with some previous comments that said that you really need to talk.
He is honestly the most knowledgeable professor out there. I am very surprised that he knows so much about the outside world and not just politics. He cares about the students and wants them to do well. So many annotated bibliography to do but he is such a great teacher! If you can take his class pls do so!!
Starting College during covid was difficult, but Prof. Mikolavich was just such a sweetheart. Super understanding, and doesn't have a complex that he's better than his students. Genuinely tried to get to know all of us. Gives great feedback on papers that are beneficial its final grade. Lot's of research based assignments but they're made to help.
He was the harshest grader I have ever had and I was good at english always. No one ever got above a 98 and even if he liked your essay he would always mark down points. Even for minuscule assignments there would be points taken off for no reason. The comments would be unhelpful and office hours wouldnt be much help either.
As a person, he's nice, but his assignments can be tough and rushed. 4 Essays, he guides you through parts of them. Unit one is partially about yourself, Unit 2 is cultural phenomenon, Unit 3 is Dialectical, skipped 4th. GO TO OFFICE HOURS FOR ESSAY FEEDBACK! Class was optional because of an Insite error, usually its mandatory. DON'T SKIP ANY WORK.
We had very few assignments. He never looked at our daily logs which were upwards of 500 words long each. I never really understood why an essay got an A or a B. Interpretive reading assignment was not done as well as it could've been.
Great teacher! Really interesting lectures and the homework is super manageable. We did two essays with a lot of prep time. Lots of assigned reading, but you can kind of get away with not doing it all if you don't go to his lectures (in an online class). Would recommend!
To be honest, I dont hate the teacher but the work load was a lot for a basic english class. I would expect that for an ap class but it seemed like every day or every other day had work. Not to mention that if you get 1 bad grade on a assignment, its SO hard to bring your grade up from that. I would say also hes VERY nit-picky and punctual.
Great professor who gives useful and specific feedback. There can be a lot of work at times but the workload is consistent so there's never way too much work. Instructions are clear and he challenges his students to improve. In the class I took (ENGL-126), essay topic choice was free, and he left plenty of time for students to find their topics.
awesome English teacher. Took Engl 122 and 126 with him and I love the way he teaches. Super inspiring and intelligent dude. He's a tough grader with high expectations but if you're someone like myself who finds English classes easy, you'll be okay. This course is essay-heavy and writing-heavy so be prepared to learn! you won't regret it
He has a wide range of knowledge from national news to global news which really helps when he gives feedback on your essay. If you take his class, it's gonna be hard to get a good score but if u attend his office hours trust me u will get an A. I got like B for the first 2 essays but got an A for the last one and ends up getting an overall A
This man is amazing! He's led a very interesting life, and you can tell he's passionate about the subject. He's always ready and willing to help, and he gives paragraphs of feedback on large assignments. My advice is simple: turn up and do the work. If you love English this class will be a breeze.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had! he is very kind and caring and is clearly passionate and knowledgeable on Shakespeare (the class I took), he grades honestly and gives great feedback. He challenges you to think while letting you take over and give your own ideas and input on every assignment. He has great lectures and is super kind!
Some of my best writing came from Prof. Mikolavich - and figuring out who I was as a writer. I took his class for all my English requirements. He gives you the option to write what you care about (in my case, science writing- I don't give a hoot about old literature). If you don't feel confident as a writer, this is the guy to take ENG under.
I really liked his class and he gives good feedback.
Professor is a very generous and sympathetic person. He will always try to make you engage in class even if you don't like it nor have the opportunity. He will tell great stories and try to cheer up his students; very open-minded and supportive.
I felt like he really didn't help me when I would go to his office hours for help or if I would implement what he said to do on an assignment he would still say I didn't do it correctly and he also gives a huge essay due at the end of semester which is like 12-14 pages which I felt like was hard because he didn't really help us
Professor Mikolavich was great for my first semester! Just 3 essays throughout the semester, with plenty of supplementary work that helps you set out the groundwork for the essays. He gives really good feedback, and is always available to help students in person or online. Definitely a tough grader, but I feel like I improved a lot as a writer.
He is very open and willing to help students. His office hours (and one on one time during class) are very helpful. I was never good at english class back in high school, but this class helped me regain confidence. Essays are never fun, but P. Mikolavich gives ample time and resources to help you prepare.
Overall, Professor Mikolavich was amazing. Through this class, my writing immensely improved, for Professor Mikolavich challenges students and gives really good feedback. However, he gives a lot of work and is a really tough grader. As an English major, this is very important to me, but steer clear if you want an easy A
Professor Mikolavich was very nice and seemed more like a friend than a teacher. Discussions in class were entertaining and informative, and he let them get as far off track as student's took them, as long as there was a good discussion happening. Good amounts of homework but the assignments themselves were very light and helped for future papers.
Professor Mikolavich is a lighthearted and caring professor. His assignments can take some time and may be asked to write a lot. When it comes to essays, there was group work and feedback from anyone you asked. Overall, nice professor and can easily ask for assistance on any assignment.
Prof. Mikolavich values class discussion, which I found intimidating as a relatively shy person. However, he manages to create a space where students feel just as comfortable sharing as they do passing. He's earnest, genuinely wants his students to succeed. He knows and loves the material he teaches. His feedback is specific and encouraging.
this is my second semester having him, he's the best prof I've had at DVC. couldn't recommend him enough; he is clear, organized, and loves literature. his feedback is incredibly helpful, esp. if u go to office hours. must take if you are an english major!!!!!!
Professor Mikolavich is a great instructor. You can tell he has a lot of passion for what he teaches and he really wants his students to do well. He is very accessible if there is ever anything that you need help with. There is a lot of writing required but he is a lenient grader and always gives good feedback.
I took his class online but you can tell that he's super passionate! There's quite a bit of writing but that's expected of an English class. He can be a harsh grader so you'll need to put in the effort but he provides GREAT feedback and will work with you to ensure you succeed. I felt like a stronger writer by the end of the semester thanks to him!
This can class can be hard if you're super introverted but Professor M is great at creating a fun environment to share and learn. His grading can be tough but he is always able to help you improve. One time I messed up on my citations and he let me redo them and turn in my essay for a better grade. Very understanding and helpful!
Not too thrilled with this guy, unfortunately! Understanding when you talk to him but pretty lackluster grading and feedback. Discussions in class are fine but I found a lot of the homework to be nothing but busy work and repetitive! Guy's been at this school for years and I respect it but I couldn't enjoy the class.
Lots of reading, so consider pacing yourself with audiobooks. Emphasizes historical context over literary qualities. Mostly class discussion with few writing assignments. He is very understanding, but tends to digress into tangential personal stories. He walks you through two explorational essay projects gradually, but I suggest drafting them ASAP.
D. Keith is excellent. Although this class is heavy on research, he provides fantastic feedback and helps you during office hours. The homework structure and resources are easy to follow. The book is cheap, and you will be doing a lot of academic reading. You will be writing three essays, but the first two are material for the third.
Prof Mikolavich is very chill and will gives good feedback when you go to his office hours. Class is very research based and the essays you write build upon each other. Graded heavily on 2 essays and 1 huge final essay. No extra credit. Not an easy A but will push you to be a critical thinker and better writer. take advantage of office hours.
Professor Mikolavich is a caring, engaging instructor. His class discussions are lively and he provides helpful feedback. The workload is manageable with the aid of tools like unstuck study. Overall, a rewarding experience for writing-focused students.
He's ok. I took him for Engl-253 as well. I found it difficult to get good scores cause when I thought I was completing the work fully, he'd take off points for some off-reason. If you're not big on in-class discussions I wouldn't suggest his in person classes. I never felt comfortable going to him for help unfortunately, but that might just be me.
Professor Mikolavich is a very thorough and quick grader. The assignments build on each other and the workload is manageable. If you are like me and generally don't enjoy English, I highly recommend taking his class; he makes writing enjoyable and gives clear feedback on how to improve.
I took his Shakespeare class, and it was very insightful. The language was hard for me to understand, but the class discussions helped with that. I didn't understand all of his grading criteria, as he didn't explain why he took points off. However, he really pushed my thinking, and overall, I think he is a great professor.
He gives great feedback and is very organized. The essays are fairly easy if you try on his assignments which are designed to help with the essay. The essays are majority of your grade so if you have questions feel free to go to his office hours or email him. He's very open to helping his students. Really great professor!
Great Professor, very minimal work
