Super easy class, great teacher, fun... i reccomend!
EASY class. He makes a boring class seem interesting. Which is better? Violin or viola? Very knowledgable...he wrote the book on music (literally, he did...he wrote the textbook you use)
SOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo intimidating! He IS funny, and entertaining, but also really scary when he's angry or disappointed. Scary-smart, too. And he's super busy with a million things, so it's hard to get a hold of him outside of class
Piece of cake class, easy tests if you've learned a musical instrument. Funny teacher.
fun class, easy tests
No Comments
extremely easy tests, and you would see why. the final was an online teacher. the listening quizzes are pretty easy too. itz a very good sleeping class cuz itz really relaxing. he sometimes picks on ppl tho, so be careful and know your stuff.
just an overall wacky guy who will keep you amused
as long as you have some music background, this class may be the EASIEST class you can take in Davis. going to Mondavi for the concerts is pretty cool too! he's kinda weird.. but most music teachers are.
I loved this class. I mean that in a purely platonic way. Holoman moved around with the grace of a god. He made me feel things I have never felt before. He could be abusive in a musical sort of way, but that's what comes when you're a 20 yr old guy.
excellent class. basic music theory and history. read the book, listen to the cds, go to the midterm review and you'll be set. also, final can be taken online!
Prof. Holoman is the funniest man ever! His class is wonderful, something to look forward to in the day. Very interesting subject matter! TAKE HIS CLASS!, you wont regret it!
I love this guy! Mus 10 can be hard if you've never had any training in music, but those of you who have...easy A! He really likes to be involved with his students and is always willing to help. great class
I had never learned to read music, so class was challenging, but still easy to get an A. I enjoyed his teaching style. He's very energetic and he obviously loves his subject. Get him talking about Berlioz! I learned a ton & am glad I took his class.
a worth-taking class and a nice teacher. go to his super organized website, you get everything you need for that class.
very easy teacher. funny, makes the class interesting. VERY EASY MIDTERM AND FINAL, all the answers are given to you. if you study for the listen quizes, there's no way you can get less than a B
hella funny dood yo!
take this class with lutterman, if no music background. holloman is for students who have had prior music experience. don't listen to the above comments. read lutterman reviews. TRUST ME!!!!
My 1 complaint would be that, as Holoman is 1 of the conductors of the UCD Orchestra, as well as the author of the textbook you use, he expects that you know a lot about music theory, but MUS 3 is Mus Theory, not Mus 10. Great prof though, and a A+ site.
I went to 1/4 of the lectures and only skimmed the book and I still pulled an A. 55% of the class got A's and 35% got B's. He's a great guy and it's a good class.
it's an easy class, but he has requirements. he gets pissy if you don't go to class, and his class expects you to have some music background. doesn't really curve (ppl do generally well), tests are easy; study off sheets or bs well, u can get an A
One of the best teachers I've ever had at Davis. Charming wit and hysterically funny. It makes you look forward to coming to class. If you have no music experience he will go out of his way to bring you up to speed... if you put the time in.
This guys is great. He's pretty funny/witty during class....but you will most likely still fall asleep if it's at 9 in the morning...But you'll still learn a lot about music just by studying for the quizzes. Our midterm was take-home/ online. VERY EASY
you'll fail the class if you have no background knowledge of music
Great class to fill GE credit. Easy and intersting. Class is a freebie if you have a prior background in music. Might be more difficult for those who dont. Just basic theory like scales, time, keys, etc. Little bit of music history. Just very elementary music stuff. Nice guy.
This guy saved my life...no lie
This class is not that easy. You have to work harder if you don't know music, like me. Midterms, study the old ones.Listening quizzes, an easy 25% of your grade so listen, learn from my mistake, papers,go see the TA and Holoman, they grade it. Don't go to class or discussion. Trust me, a WASTE OF TIME!
Go to lecture! It's more important than people say. DKH is hilarious, especially if you already have some working knowledge of music. The TAs are especially helpful with any issues/questions, and DKH's office hours are the way to go if you want to talk to him directly. The class website was great to
I have no music background but this class is easy. Study the previous MTs because the real MT is almost identical in questions. Make sure to know learn how to write music and your set. Listening quizzes are an easy A if you actually practice. He hasn't saved my life, but he has saved my GPA.
omg i thought mus 10 was an easy A. i have no music background and that class is asking for so much. the final is gonna be a killer cause you have to be able to hear the music form. sigh.......the papers are sooooo like hard to get an A cause you really have to knwo what you are talking about. sigh.
I have music experience, so this was a perfect GE for me. It's an interesting class, the lectures kept me awake even though it's early in the morning, the professor is hella funny, and the test's are simple if you go to lecture. I told all my friends to take this class. Easy, and interesting.
awesome teacher wish I could have him for more classes. had no music experience but his lectures tell you pretty much all you need. and funny too
If someone tells you that this class is any easy A, do not believe them. The Lectures were cool and discussion was not so bad. The Midterm was hard because you had to listen to a certain piece and right music notes. The final however was easy. Easy B.
Highly recommended!Knowledgable professor who gives interesting lectures. He is very organized and makes learning about music fun.He likes to randomly sing along with the music in class.Go to his lectures!Quizzes and exams are fair. This class is fun,and it is not too hard.
OMG I HATED THIS CLASS. Prof. Holoman along with his TA's (Jonathan Wilkes) are very boring. His lectures are pointless (so don't go to them) and what sucks even more is that his jokes suck too! If you want an easy A take this class, but I warn you be prepared to sleep during leccture.
This class was very easy and I really enjoyed it. ALthough the lectures are pointless to go to, if you are interested in the subject it is worth your while to go to them. As for TA's mine sucked and I heard others did to, so dont count on their help
Easy-going guy. Funny sometimes. Easy material! Make SURE to listen to your CDs. Two papers were easy enough. KNOW the answers to all of his practice questions because most will be on the final. Easy A for sure.
He knows his stuff. He's a little cocky, probably because he is the symphony conductor and feels degraded teaching this class. TA jeremy faust is so hot!!

ARROGANT. He's animated and dedicated to music, and as long as he likes you, you're set. The more you feed the ego and praise the mediocre UCDSO, the more he'll like you. I personally wouldn't recomend him as a prof, but there isn't much choice at UCD when it comes to music 10 teachers.
If anyone is an ass, it is this man.
The guy just gives off a wierd vibe -- arrogant and unfunny -- didn't know his stuff -- unhelpful -- not funny -- his conducting SUCKS -- UCD should get rid of this guy and get some good
Take this class if you have an appreciation for classical music, or aspire to learn more about it. Dr. Holoman is so ridiculously arrogant, it's actually kinda entertaining. He did accuse me of cheating on a quiz, so I had to verbally cut him real quick :) Keep the CD's on heavy rotation, keep one ear open during lecture, and you'll get at least a
He makes classical music a lot more fun, if you like classical music prior to taking the class. He can be creepy at times. And he can be arrogant. Maybe because he knows his stuffs, he's a successful guy in his musical career, so I guess that's why.
Practice midterms are posted online and he uses 1 of them for your actual midterm. Final is online (so its really easy too). Listening quizes are easy if you study for 'em and the papers are no-brainers. I had no kind of musical knowledge before this class (and I still don't) and I did great. Highly reccomend if you want and easy A.
Two words: Excellent professor! He will interest you in material you never thought you would be interested in. If you have a chance, take a course from him. He is retiring soon, so hurry up, you won't regret it.
I hate this class and I hate this guy - he's to arrogant for words and with no reason!!! Its all about him and his 'jokeyness' is just sad.
Holoman is very egotistical and he mumbles when he talks so you don't understand a damn thing that he's saying. He expects you to know what he's talking about and doesn't even tell you specifically which chapters to read. He needs to clarify what he's talking about in class and be more direct rather and not expect everyone to have music knowledge.
Holoman is hugely talented, and a real character in class. Cool use of iTunes in lecture. Great course -- everyone should take it.
This class is super easy if you have prior music background. Even if you don't it's really easy to catch on. He's a very leniant professor too. If you do poorly on the miterm he lets you retake it. TAKE THE CLASSSSS. It's a given B if not A.
The main problem I had with this course is a lack of organization - Holoman is all over the place. Also the textbook is written in some sort of strange, annoyingly poetic prose. I wanted a more formally structured course. It is easy though.
Great professor, the lectures were always enjoyable. He knows his stuff... but gets off topic at times. If you don't have any music backgroud, it is easy to catch on. If you screw up on one of the listening quizzes it will hurt your grade. Overall a fun GE.
Incredibly easy class. Questions for the final were posted ahead of time in the online quiz bank. Nothing about this class was difficult: the pieces you had to learn for the listening quiz's were also posted ahead of time and very different from each other. The essays were also a breeze (I got a 20/20 for the last which I wrote in about 2 hours).
Easy GE class. Going to class is recommended because the material he goes over in class is on the listening quizzes and final. I skipped class and it ruined me on the listening final. I did not like the essays because they were open ended and I like direct prompt essays. Out of my 16 unit load I focused on this class the least and pulled off an A.
Cocky and pretentious. SO unorganized and unclear. It's not hard, but you do have to memorize all sorts of pieces for "Listenting Quizzes" (which sound easy enough, but somehow aren't- these are what dropped me from an A to be B) and attend at least three concerts (and write 2-3 page papers on 2 of them). Not recommended unless you enjoy getting a B in a GE class that should be an easy A.
The lectures aren't too organized, but most of the stuff doesn't relate to exam material (same with the book). Make full use of Smartsite resources and the practice exams and MAKE SURE to go to the review sessions. DKH is kind of a arrogant, but the most important thing is he wants everyone to do good. You really can't do worst than a B.
Cool class. Electronic resources (smartsite) kept the class organized. "Easy" to earn an A if you do all the work and prepare for the listening quizzes with the podcasts. Humor more nuanced than what you are used to, flyboy. What else is he teaching?
I'm absolutely terrified of him. In rehearsal he can pick out the weak players like a hyena hunting sick buffalo. He lets you know that that's all you are to him: a sick buffalo. I've heard that if you stay in Symphony for more than 6 years he starts to warm up to you but that it takes at least 13 to have a real conversation of any kind.
Dr. Holoman is the best professor in the Music dept hands down, one of my favorite profs at UCD.This class is not hard at all if you do the small amount of studying required. You will get an A if ur not a complete idiot! But I realized that theres a lot of less than bright students at UCD.He is SO fair!!! and funny!!!! Get Mr. Lehning as ur TA!!!!!
Do not take this class without prior experience in music too much work for 4 units. Get a good TA if you do. Got an A but took a lot of work cause I am not interested in music only science.
The class was very enlightening, and it has expanded my musical interests. Prof Holoman is super funny but is intimidating up close. He wasn't very personable. He likes to talk alot and doesn't mind interupting others when he wants to say something. But as a teacher he is GREAT!!! I love his methods, and his passion for the subject is contagious.
Great professor, fun class. A little more work for those with no music experience, but I am a science major and loved it. Very fair grader, wants you to succeed. Awesome!
The in class midterm was easy because he gives questions like "hunch as to who this is or what song?", and therefore gives you points if you made an educated guess. The rest of the test/quiz/final was online(easy). The pain was writing 2 essays 25% grade which the TAs graded... not the professor so sucks if you have picky TA.
if you have no prior music knowledge then you're pretty much doomed to get no higher than a B. only people that are doing well are people that already have a musical background
Great guy with humor, wants to help students, passionate about music. However, I didn't really like his teaching style. I don't suggest you take this unless you're interested in music history and are determined to do well in the class. So many people slacked in this EASY A class and consequently, they failed. lol :]
Awesome prof! He wrote the book that he teaches out of which is always a plus. Very funny and energetic in lecture. The class is easy! Final was online.
Professor Holoman is fantastic! He's hilarious and really gets you interested in his class. The exams are super easy. All you need to do is put aside a little time for listening quizzes and put some thought into your essays!
Typical nutty professor, not at all PC, but pretty funny as a result. Tends to go off on tangents a lot, but he basically spoon feeds you the answers to the midterm and final. He makes his TAs super picky about writing assignments, but mine (Sarah?) was really helpful and nice about answering my all my stupid questions. A lot of work, but not hard.
first off, holoman is hilarious. the stuff he says in class makes you laugh and keeps u engaged. i did not have ANY prior music knowledge when i took this class. but trust me when i tell you that i learned a tremendous amount and the class was not hard at all! definately one of my fav classes at UCD!
He is an easy professor, but he scared you at the beginning.Listening quiz are not easy, midterm(in class) and final(take home)is easier.3 essays were graded by TA, hard. I failed the first listening quiz, so i change to P/NP, i am so regret! because after i worked all the requirements,I got B at the end.Do the test in smartsite. Final Qs from there
seriously, this class is such bs. he's changed the format since all these people posted about it being easy. final is no longer take home, listening quizzes have gotten much harder, etc. there is no way this should be a "10" class. so ridiculously hard if you have no prior knowledge. would not recommend, and i'm an honor student
A very interesting class i would say. However, the class is very hard. Listening quiz are hard. Also the paper we turn in is graded hard by TA. If you didn't get A in this class. Don't feel bad.
Great class. Engaging, interesting, well-organized, and at times funny. The professor is a great lecturer and is one who you would actually want to listen to. Just like any other 4 unit university level class, this class requires time and some effort. Listening quizzes are easy, just study for them! Class Avg: 86. Final/Midterm: Easy/Fairly Graded.
This class is very hard if you don't have prior music knowledge. Just genuinely study and ask your TA for help. My grade went from an B- to A- because I talked to the TA and asked for help on the essay and overall assignments.
Professor Holoman does not make this class fun. This class was one of my most stressful classes this qtr. He doesn't really teach you anything, and yet you are supposed to know something for the midterm and final. Pulled an A in the class, but definitely wouldn't recommend for those who want easy A. I don't think he is teaching anymore though...
Whole grade is based on 2 essays. Tough grader. Nit-picky on writing assignments i.e. responses to readings. Students have no prior knowledge to music yet he expects them to know everything. His feedback is difficult to understand bc he writes in brief sentences. Super annoying because it's not clear as to what he's referring to.
DKH calls people out in class and isn't afraid to be meanhonest. However, toward the end of the quarter I gained an appreciation and respect for him that I never thought I would. He cares about his students and he's very funny and smart. He also goes out of his way to help. Highly recommend if you're up for a challenge. It's worth it!
Awesome professor! Sounds intimidating, but not at all once you go to office hours. Super helpful in office hours. Teaches what you need to know and try to make the exams and quizzes as easy as possible, but you will need to study for it. He talks super fast, but with clarity. Free to write whatever topic on essay (ofc within the premises).
Generally speaking, professor Holoman is a very knowledgable musician. And that makes him condescending and arrogant sometimes. The class itself is NOT a joke; you write two essays and each of them is worth 40% of your grade. The TAs grade them fairly hard, so you HAVE to put in work. It is a lot of stress for a 2 unit class but I learned a lot.
Obviously a very intelligent person, and a pretty good teacher as well, two things that don't always correlate. That's really all there is to say about him. Other than he looks kinda like Colonel Sanders. And his name is Kern. So that's a weird ... coincidence.
There are two types of MUS 10 students; those that have prior Music experience and get easy As, and those that don't and struggle with Bs. Overall, you won't fail if you study at all though. TAs grade essays very harshly, as the averages were Cs according to the grade book. Holoman is a very enthusiastic man who is funny and approachable.
