Fun and friendly instructor but he tends to contradict the text book on occasion which can make things harder to study.
a charismatic instructor. Always tries to make material more interesting with examples and cases that we can relate and understand. overall, just a terrific class and a fun yet also responsible and insightful professor.
Material is interesting. His teaching style is effective--very friendly and approachable. Tests are also very fair--essay questions that are given out ahead of time. Highly recommended.
Wonderful, charismatic lecturer. Great at providing a framework of analysis for the readings. Very caring, down-to-earth professor. I have nothing but respect for him. Probably the best looking professor in the psych department too.
Funny!! Highly Recommended!
good class, good professor, good lectures. made things quite entertaining on the days i actually went to class, so it made me wonder what i missed out on the days i had skipped.
an excellent lecturer, and very knowledgeable. however, the class was really huge, and all the GSI's seemed a little dumb. also, i felt keltner kind of dumbed down the lectures for some reason. so, yes, i did learn something in this class, but i kept wishing i was learning more.
Fascinating lectures, engaging personality, and visibly excited about what he's teaching. I never missed a class because they were all interesting. The class was easy too, I got 100% on two of the tests! By far one of the top three classes I've taken at Cal.
Truly one of the best classes and profs. I have ever had. One should definitely take this class! Even though it was very easy, I found myself doing the reading simply becuase it was so interesting and applicable to your everyday life. Take this class!
Awesome professor. I loved this class. It was interesting, and Keltner is a great and funny lecturer. I definitely recommend it!
I loved his class and it was an added bonus that he is so attractive
Prof. Keltner is a great professor--definitely in the top three I had at Berkeley. He's clearly engaged in the material and enjoys teaching. Take his class if you get the chance!
Great class. However, often times i wanted Keltner to go into more depth, this would both make it more challenging and also more interesting. Overall, definitely reccomend this teacher.

awesome
Class was slow and boring at times but def worth taking. Fun for the most part and tests are fair
Let me just say first and foremost, this is hands down THE favorite class i have taken at berkeley. Not only are the topics interesting but the professor is AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!! He knows his topics very well and i stayed up for every class...(almost). highly recommended and i would take another class with him if he taught something else i needed.
He is so intelligent! I love this class- most interesting class I have ever taking! Taking this class will make you analyze your own morals and ethics and those of the people around you! did I say that I love this class? I do!
This class was worthless for me. I expected to be introduced to some hardcore theories about morality and really delve into them. Instead, he gave us a reader with dozens of articles, each with different theories, and we would spend a lecture on each. Everything contradicted, and he provided no answers. This class was too general. A waste of time.
He takes a long time reviewing what he talked about last lecture and previewing what he's going to talk about this lecture. When he finally gets to the lecture, he never goes in depth on any topic. I've taken psych before and thought it was very interesting. But he has managed to make it boring for me. On the bright side, it's easy.
I didn't like Keltner at all. He tries to charm the students by being seductive and pretend he is 18 years old (maybe his hairstyle was actually hip when he was 18?) but the content of his lectures are thin.
I really did not like this class. The content was boring, the Professor was really boring and tried too hard to be cool. He spends an hour talking about nothing. His tests are a lot of memorizing. Not interesting at all.
I didn't care for his class. He can be funny at times, but I am here to learn something. Too bad this university has too many professors that doesn't make the tuition worthwhile.
Prof. Keltner is a wonderful and interesting lecturer. He encourages discussion and questions. I enjoyed listening to what he had to say. He is excited about the material and makes students interested in it too. He presents material clearly and effectively.
If you go to his office hours he doesn't help you at all. He says he is there for us, but he was constantly in meetings and definitely not very helpful His tests are inconsistantly graded. the GSI's grade them so its all up in the air what your grade will turn out to be Lectures are fun, but to do well in the course u need to memorize everything i
After hearing such great things about him, I decided to take his class. Don't be fooled. The exams are very inconsistent, meaning they are written by different GSIs and graded by different GSIs. There is also a grading curve in the class that can even hurt you. This class is not all that great.
The lectures are mediocre, its definitely more worth while to read the text book. I dont get what all the good reviews are for. He definitely did not meet my expectations. The exams are so poorly written and inconsistent, and grading of exams really depends on how nit picky the GSI who is grading it wants to be. Pretty Lame.
Prof Keltner seemed to promise a lot more than he actually offered. Social psych certainly was an interesting course, but his lectures were condensed versions of the text (which he co-wrote). Once I picked that up I stopped going to class and did just fine without it.
the tests are easy content wise but hard because he doesn't put a whole lot of effort into making them so confusion results. the gsis are mean and inconsistent. don't take him unless you have to.
You get a study sheet a week in advance of the tests. As long as you study it, you'll get an A basically guaranteed. He also takes the essay question directly from the study sheet as well as the IDs. Basically, he hands you the info on a silver platter. He's also nice and hot. What more could you ask for?
Professor Keltner is a really cool, interesting teacher and his lectures were always relevant and stimulating. My only gripe about the course is that he encouraged a "seminar approach" to a class with 200 students. What ended up happening is that when he asked a q. the same students would speak up and not really contribute anything very interesting
I miss Dacher!! A wonderful human-being and a wonderful professor. Thoughtful, well-integrated lectures. Very charismatic. I took two courses with him and he got a standing ovation the last day of class for both classes. We all loved him.
reallly chill class - his lectures are summaries of the book so if you read the text lectures just help out; midterms he gives a review sheet with key terms/all potential essay q's so if you use that you are guaranteed a good grade; he's a nice prof but not really all that people make him out to be. entertaining but nothing original from the text
Dr. Keltner is AMAZING! The class is extremely EASY and his lectures are so ENTERTAINING! You get a study guide for each test and as long as your study from them you are guaranteed an A. Read the book and you WILL get an A. The textbook is a fun and easy read.
One of the best professors I have taken to date! He is very engaging and presents the material in a way that not only captures interest and attention, but makes it easy to understand. Plus you get a review sheet before the midterm and the final, so if you study, you will do great!
great professor, but i think the gsis grade unevenly. the m/c and essay and short answers are rather arbitrary.
Prof. Keltner loves teaching this class and the enthusiasm is evident. I didn't expect to enjoy the lectures as much as I did, but these social psych concepts can be applied to real-world situations. The grading rubric is picky though, but the study guides are very helpful. It's not an easy class with the journal articles, but well worth the time.
I think Keltner's a very kind and approachable professor, but I personally didn't enjoy his lecture style. Lecture felt disorganized and topics were covered way too quickly. Exams were difficult and tricky. I don't recommend taking this class if you're not a psych major.
Amazing professor! If you ever get a chance to take his class, do it! Very charismatic, funny, and engaging. Human emotion has been my favorite class at Berkeley. I'm really excited about taking his Psych 160 class right now!
Lectures were a little bit unorganized and went through the material fairly quickly. Keltner is a nice dude, though. Exam grading got better over time. Section wasn't very helpful, depends on the GSI.
A nice guy. His lectures were usually pretty good, sometime funny, sometimes a little dull. He gives essay tests, which are fairly easy, but graded harshly. The text is very readable. Overall the class is OK, but its NOT super easy, nor is Keltner the absolute best professor I've ever had.
Such an entertaining and informative professor! Down to earth, witty, engaging, and pretty much an all around bad-a**. Lectures were very clear, and though ALL of the the lecture material could be found in the book, his delivery helped to solidify concepts. Tests were very reasonable: he gave us clear study guides w/the essay questions! Webcast!
Don't listen to the brown-nosing comments regarding this professor--they are all wrong. Lectures are disorganized, GSIs are not in touch with prof, textbook is long-winded, and theories are backed up with little evidence. Tests are straight from the book--no need to go to lecture. If you are not a Psych major DO NOT take this class! Worst class
I really loved 160 with Professor Keltner. His lectures were interesting and a plus is he webcasts all of them. The book was a must-read for me, especially because you have to memorize a ton of vocab terms for the test. The graders seemed really picky, but you always know what to expect because he gives you a handout. One of my favs at Cal!
This man is an Ego-maniac! He cares nothing for helping his undergraduate students. Do not dare to oppose his statements in class! It's all his way, or the highway. He is too busy at UCSF to help any Berkeley Undergraduates.
It is absolutely ludicrous for the picture of Keltner to be shown with a monk! He mocks all mention of spirituality! Keltner is a former Stanford graduate who majored in Theater, which is certainly his specialty. He puts on quite a show, masquerading as a compassionate and caring Berkeley psychologist. He is mostly interested in his 'Keltner' Lab.
Fun lectures but they're not always coherent as a lot of it was discussion. The important stuff came mostly from the textbook. tests were okay...multiple choice questions were hard.
Professor Keltner is a very understanding professor. The class was easy if you read the book and paid attention in lecture. He gives a review sheet before each midterm, most of the terms are found in the textbook or in lecture. The textbook can be interesting and boring sometimes. Lectures were always very engaging and interesting.
Lectures were short and rushed-He could never answer questions relating to the topic-his knowledge is limited to particular research. Grading is ridiculously harsh-GSI and Prof do not communicate well --Section is useless (i.e. we didn't cover anything on the MT's) Grading is arbitrary-Simply an over rated professor-
Although he's a very engaging lecturer, you can more than get by with black lightning note and the book. Sections mandatory but completely useless.
This class is really interesting, and Keltner really knows the material well. He is very engaging and charming. Even though there were black lightning notes, I wanted to go to class anyway because it was great listening to his lecture. The material is great, but the m/c on the tests were nearly impossible. Take the class though. It explains a lot.
Professor Keltner's awesome! He's a charismatic and engaging lecturer. The class itself is pretty easy, but make sure you read the textbook if you want to get an A. Sections just supplement material, but the activities are pretty interesting & the GSIs are nice.
AWESOME AWESOME!! He is everything that you dream about reading on this extremely accurate website. Easy A, gives you everything that you need to know for his exams on a study guide a week before exams, by the way which are NOT cumulative. Because of the study guide you dont have to attend lecture to see his long blonde Prince like locks of hair.
Lectures are disorganized, thin, last-minute and right out of the book. Exams are memorization-based, with inconsistent GSI grading-a dice throw. He cultivates his popularity and position, and tries to be cool for the swooning coeds, but doesn't really put much into it. It's all politics and entertainment-not science. It's all a phony smiley face.
Prof Keltner has changed my life! Best prof I've ever had at Cal. I've taken 162, 156, and 160 with him and all are essentially the same format. Webcasts and study guides... can't go wrong. Tests are easy once you get used to the format: definitions + essay. Know examples of studies and you'll do great. Take any class with him, he's AMAZING.
Easy class, but that isn't the only reason why this class is great. The material is fascinating, and the way it is delivered by keltner makes the class really fun. The exams are non-cumulative, and much of everything on the study guide is on the exams. TAKE HIM!
At first this class felt like my longest lecture. But the material is extremely interesting and Keltner is an amazing Professor. Test are straight from the book, although there is some material that's only covered in lecture. I had Paul Piff for a GSI, he was amazing made waking up and going to early discussion totally worth it! TAKE THIS CLASS
Awesome, funny, and energetic professor. Material is also really interesting. Definitely learned a lot. There's lots of reading (textbook + 2 books), but if you do them, exams will be very easy.
wonderful, engaging professor.
Don't take for 160 when Chen who also teaches 160 got best faculty award! Lecture is a rip-off as it is 2/3 discussion! Tests are written by GSIs who are not in touch w/lecture. My GSI said: "honestly, you know this better than we do, we took it so long ago." I'm an A-student & had to guess on 1/2 the exam MC bc it was randomly chosen from the book
Decent class - easy, just have to do the reading as assigned (not that it's much). He/the course is generally amusing, and both raise many thought-provoking ideas that may change your life for the better in a variety of ways. Not sure it should count for three units, but I'm not complaining. Felt a bit like going to a happy therapist for...tuition.
I was hoping this would be an psych class that really examined the effects (positive and negative) of social interactions but it is super lightweight. Keltner presents a rose-colored view of the world and fails to really examine important causes and effects of behavior. This class is not for serious thinkers.
This class is an easy A. You don't really have to attend lectures, just do the readings and attend sections. I got the lecture notes and it was fine. We learn some interesting research, but I expected more from the class.
I personally didn't enjoy lectures (rambled). Tests purely based on textbook readings that were simple and interesting. Section was useless, but take Muping as a GSI if possible - she is an incredibly concise speaker
I was disappointed with the overall material as it seemed too "light" and "fluffy". There were a few concepts I really enjoyed. He went through the material via slides rather quickly. Know the studies discussed in class and in the textbook. Know how to apply the concepts. On a good note, he was funny and entertaining while presenting the slides.
Social psych isn't my favorite but he's a good lecturer. I read the book, ignored the study guide and went over EVERYTHING, and got an A+. There won't be anything on the exam that you won't find in the book if you read it thoroughly.
Keltner is fantastic. Super nic guy, entertaining lecturer, and really supportive in office hours. The class is also really interesting and I probably learned more from this class than I have in my other classes combined. You definitely need to put in the work to get everything out of it, but I loved it.
Professor Keltner is amazing! He is super helpful in and outside of class. Going to office hours was always a gratifying experience. Everyone should take his class.
I LOVE DACHER! Seriously, he's awesome and super inspirational. His Human Happiness class changed my life: take it!
Dacher is amazing! He was such a fun lecturer to listen to! This is one of my top two classes I have taken at Berkeley! The material was super interesting. He is one of the leading researchers in the field so most of the studies you learn about are his. He consulted on Pixar's Inside Out!!! The class itself was super easy!
Unorganized but funny guy.
It seems that is either a hit or miss situation. In my opinion, his happiness class was the worse class I've taken. It was boring, and superficial. His lectures were unorganized and unsubstantial. A lot of words to say nothing of interest. Also, I dislike the 'I'm cool and funny' public persona. (He might be very different when not lecturing)
Dacher is fine lol. His lectures are awesome and you learn about emotions is ways you never thought you could. He loves students and is funny Don't expect much about Inside Out; he brings it up maybe 2x. Be aware that it's 10% section, 45% midterm and final each. Study hard, and you'll pass. An easy earned A. Going to lecture is a must. Dont skip.
While certainly friendly, thought he was overrated. Lectures can be scattered; he'd spend so much time on his introductions for each lecture that it would cut in significantly into actually lecturing. Encouraged discussions in class. His clear bias for positive psychology somewhat bothered me a bit; many of his jokes came off as trying too hard.
He's nice but I was disappointed with the class. I took human emotion bc it sounded great! But the lectures are all geared towards proving his point that emotions are positive/useful. That's fine, but I wanted to hear about more substantial subjects in lecture, wish he'd gone into the book more. If you want to learn just read the book on your own.
Booooooooring. Avoid! One of my least favorite professors at cal. He's super into himself, both of the books assigned for the class were written by him and he loves so reference his own research. I got so sick of him that I stopped attending lectures midway through the semester and I still got an A+ because exams were straight out of the book.
Keltner is incredibly knowledgable in his field. His lectures were captivating, filled with both entertaining and helpful photos, and his tests were somewhat difficult but straight-forward. He puts an effort in to break up lectures with activities and engages his students. He responds fast to emails and provides opportunities/resources for students
Dacher is an awesome guy who makes this class interesting and extremely worthwhile. One of my favorite classes I've taken at Cal.
Prof Keltner makes class very inspiring and interesting. I learned something new and profound about human emotions every lecture. I think he has managed to sneak in a class which is focused more on helping students be happy and satisfied regardless of their field / interests. Recommended light hearted class at Cal.
Keltner is a genuinely good person who wants to bring out the best in his students. Lectures are interesting (though a bit slow at times), but it's one of those classes where you get out what you put in you can try incorporating practices into your life or if you don't buy into it, then so be it. Exams are mostly direct, but some weird details.
Super engaging class that actually prioritized student happiness (true to the name). Great balance of hands-on activities despite a huge lecture hall, and interesting readings that were not difficult to digest. Prof. Keltner is easily one of the best lecturers at Berkeley!
Really interesting content, engaging lectures, extremely caring as a person. exams are 90% of the grade but was very manageable
Never went to lecture, never read his book (his book and the textbook are "required," but tbh just get the textbook), and never went to discussion. Got a B. The class isn't impossible, but the lectures feel like a waste of time and the "study guides" are useless. Go to discussion though, attendance is worth 10% and exams are worth the other 90%
I'm kind of crushed. First two tests weren't impossible for me, but once we moved online it seemed like it got harder?? The cumulative final was portrayed to give students a chance up their grade. We were told to use past study guides but the questions were EXTREMELY specific - prior guides useless. Maybe that could've worked if it was open book.
How is a class about human happiness actively making me more depressed. This class is so self intuitive it hurts. Legit everything he teaches you is common sense. Your entire grade is based on two exams which are so poorly organized. I strongly recommend everyone avoid this train wreck of a class.
The professor seems to always be in a good mood and cares about the wellbeing of others. Practices are always integrated into lectures. Lectures are not recorded but slides are posted. The exams are multiple choice but are deceptively difficult.
Theres only 2 exams, and the GSI's (7 of them last semester) write the exams. Which means, you have 7 different brains writing very specific questions. It doesn't work. Also, dacher has you get 4 books for the class, 3 of which he wrote him self and you can easily purchase them all on amazon. I believe that speaks for itself.
Your entire grade consists of 3 things: exam 1, exam 2, and exam 3. If you mess up on one exam, you are kind of screwed. There is no assignments or homework to cushion your grade. However, the class is interesting and the content is not difficult. Discussion sections are high-key pointless. The class is good, but the structure is awful.
Amazing course, great lecturer. I know and hope that I will reflect on what I learned in this course long into the future.
The lectures were a little hard to follow along. I found a lot of what was on the tests had to do with the readings assigned and not from the lecture material so I found myself studying the wrong things.
As someone with a special interest in philosophy and psychology this course should be everything I'd want. Sadly, the course is unbelievably boring and random. Completely lacking in any form of intellectual rigor instead just focused on memorizing a random assortment of facts the professor picks are important seemingly arbitrarily.
One of my favorite classes at Berkeley. It's so interesting and applicable!! I feel like I learned a lot and grew as a person. I actually didn't attend the lectures that often (they're not recorded), but I read all 4 books. The tests are very straight forward, and the class overall is chill. I appreciate the mindfulness practices we do in class.
Avoid this class -- the lectures are so boring and so disorganized and studying the study guide will not set you up to succeed. 90% of your grade is exams and they are not intuitive (half the questions are beyond confusing) For a class about happiness, this one did the opposite.
Keltner's class is a unique gem at Cal - it's engaging, insightful, and genuinely helps students find happiness. The lectures are worthwhile, and integrating practices makes it interactive. Exams are tricky, but unstuck ai can be a lifesaver for study prep.
Dacher is one of the most inspiring professors I've encountered @Cal. He is such an unwaveringly life-affirming person that his Happiness lectures untangled me from a quintessential postmodern mindset. Highly recommend his book about Awe, especially the audio one!
