Super cool guy, lot of sports metaphors, but he's cute, nice, & teaches well. I went to him during his office hours and he lent me a book about something I was interested in! Genuinely likes teaching.
hot in a geeky way
Warning: Sometimes his attractiveness makes it a little hard to concentrate. Also tends to talk about a small part of the text and expand on that for too long. Pretty open to class opinions.
Favorite professor from this semester. He's real chill and knows what he is talking about. Would strongly recommend him. FYI: his voice = SO SEXY
Very good prof. Can get boring at times but his ppt notes are super clear and helpful! Midterms are fair but not enough time to finish if you didn't study 100%.
sexy American voice. handsome. easy to follow, good for first year student
Intelligent and cute, with a dry sense of humour. Extremely clear during his lectures and helpful during office hours as well. I've found the exams difficult though, so definitely don't skimp on the studying.
handsome, sexy pro. like him
He is a really good prof! He knows what he's talking about and is very clear! Uses a lot of sports examples :) If you don't have a good TA you will not do well because they mark the midterms. STUDY STUDY STUDY for his exams/midterms as I found them somewhat difficult.
Very engaging. Studying lecture notes are all you really need to do to prepare for his exams, although they were harder than expected. TA's mark VERY unfairly with assignments. Reading the textbook provides a lot of clarity with certain concepts. One of my easier classes for sure! Definitely reccoment this class for first years
easy class; easy prof! His lectures are always consistent with textbook!
6 short assignments; 2 midterms and 1 final. Midterms were extremely long; not enough time to write them especially the last part (reconstructing argument). TA was a tough marker...
He is an awesome professor I've ever seen. He knows what he is talking about. The lecture note is very helpful for your midterms and finals. If you study enough, the tricky T/F questions are no longer hard. I didn't do well on midterms but it helped me to get better on final though. I strongly recommend this course. Love his sexy voice.
Great prof! Did not know much about ethics before taking the course but he gave useful illustrations of abstract concepts to help students understand. Since the course I've found many applications for what we learned in other courses. Really nice, personable guy. Went out for drinks with the class after the final.
Epistemology, def not a GPA booster no matter the prof. He knows his stuff. I thought @ times he focused too much on one topic but that could be good if you didn't do a proper reading, speaking of, LOTS of reading to do - not easy. Engaging class, def has favouritism to girls. Expect a 'B' at most!
Lecture slides were really useful. His lectures were informative and easy to sit through. Only complaint was that one of the midterms was too long, and did not allow enough time to finish. Otherwise, he is very clear and easy to understand. Assignments are easy and the final was easy if you study an adequate amount.
His class is interesting, I'll give him that. However, midterms were really tricky (multiple choice with multiple answers needed to be chosen to be right? wtf?) and not enough time to finish. Can pretty much just study his lecture notes to do alright in course. This course is pretty hard.. it's like math with words, though it is interesting
He's a very good teacher, did well in the course, but he's an ass.
I can say he's a pretty good prof. I thought his midterms and final were pretty tricky, especially the MC question part. All the lecture slides are posted up in WebCT after each chapter. Tut help clear some material, depends on who your TA was. btw, Wil C is a pretty good TA. gave us a lot of info to help us do well on the midterms and final.
An interesting course focusing on logic in philosophy. Course material was easy to understand but exam questions can be quite complicated ...
The material seems very easy in lecture, until you get to the exams. There are hardly any practice questions to do and for the ones there are, they are NOTHING like the exam questions. Studied my butt off and didn't do as well as I would expect. He's a decent prof, the exams are just unfair.
i got past exams from a frd and it was extremely easy, who would of thought he would make it so hard this year? final was out of 247 if i remember correctly, not enough time to finish the exams. definetely NOT a gpa booster.
His power-points are very clear, easy to sit through and helpful. The midterm was a lot more difficult than I expected so make sure you study hard. A good TA will help you do well in this class. Definitely not a GPA booster but it is a really interesting class.
stupid prof, silly exam question, even himself dont know the answer. and we have to collect back all the exam, since his answer keys are full of mistakes. very unfair prof, and never reply email
Interesting prof, but the exams are pretty disheartening.
He's a great professor, it's just the fact that his tests are so hard. The average for the midterm was like 48%. It's definitely a hard course but I find it rather interesting because of Dai.
Dr. Heide is a great lecturer, really funny and makes things easy to understand. Attendance to lectures is not mandatory until around 2nd midterm time because he stops using the textbook. Midterms are impossible, so don't beat yourself up. . . 50% is amazing. Good luck.
Dai engaged us in discussions but wasn't really open to hearing opinions others than his own, even if they were well backed up. The course material was fairly narrow. It is a course on Env. ethics and we didn't look at indigenous or eastern thought, which was disappointing. This class would be better for someone who has not taken ethics before.
For people less philosophically inclined or that have never taken a phil class before, material is somewhat difficult to grasp at first, but is possible to understand with lots of studying and a good TA. But here is nothing anyone can do for the midterms. He's pretentious but his good looks make up for it. I would not recommend taking this class.
Very interesting class, and I like the prof. Great set of lecture slides, really helpful for studying afterwards. Even though it was a hard class, I enjoyed it and found it interesting. Highly recommended, just don't be expecting to get a easy high mark out of it.
The material itself is pretty easy, he is very helpful and provides good lecture notes, but his midterms and final are the hardest tests I've ever taken at SFU. Test averages are usually in the 40's to low 50's. Don't take this class if your looking for a easy GPA booster, but if your interested I would highly recommend taking it. And he's soo hot!
An interesting course overall, prof is great but his tests are ridiculously hard and very hard to get an A. Just passing a test is considered a good mark.
He's a good prof but do not take this this class if you don't need to. Total GPA flunker
I've heard some bad things about PHIL profs at SFU but Dai was excellent, the only bad thing about him is that his exams are unreasonably hard. I spent 3 hours a week studying for this course and only managed a C. Very difficult but I found it interesting. Might end up re-taking this because it brought down my GPA
He gives outstanding and interesting lectures. Reviewing his lectures is "positively correlated" to succeeding in this class. You will do well in this class 'if and only if" you study. My argument is valid. PS: His voice is phenomenal.
Excellent lecturer but exams are extremely hard. However, since its curved, all you really need to do is stay above the class average which is usually around 50%. Tests should have been more reasonable but Dai was great at teaching the material
His exams are way too hard for a first year intro PHIL course. But by the looks of the other ratings for PHIL profs on here, this is the man if you want any chance of succeeding
Cool dude. Easy course material but tricky exams if you dont study. Wouldn't recommend as an elective but if you need this course for your major, you MUST take it with Dai!
The reason why everyone says this is a hard course is because they expected PHIL to be a cake walk but its not. Exams require you study but this is a fair, although tricky course. Best PHIL prof by far, if you need this course, don't take it with anyone else
Second straight semester taking classes with Dai. Amazing professor, I love the style he teaches, very clear at explaining everything, and gives great real life examples. Don't be expecting to get an easy high mark though, Philosophy is one of the hardest departments in SFU
Took both Phil xx1 & 100w with Dai. Extreme Hotness that draws your attention. The only drawbacks are his speed of talking and brutal exams.
love him. if u work hard u can get a good mark. No matter whether English is your 2nd language or not.Final is fair for who really study.
This prof really seems to know what he is talking about! This course kicks the ass of anyone who thinks it'll be an easy pass, you have to go to lectures and do the readings to get by even though attendance isn't marked. Lots of people were re-taking it, but they obviously never paid attention. Work hard and you'll be fine!
Dai Heide's lectures are such a pleasant to attend. He explains well with a little bit of humor, so just pay attention and you'll do fine !
Wouldn't recommend this course. It was nothing like what I expected, especially since half the course is math/statistics. Take 100 or 120 if you need PHIL credit. Heide overall was pretty good, not very helpful though, and his exams are pretty harsh. Of the known XX1 profs he is probably your best bet though
Very clear at explaining concepts and his lecture slides help a lot. That being said the course material itself is extremely boring and not at all what i was expecting. Has multiple multiple choice on his midterms.. just saying.
Love this prof and his american accent, he can really draw your attention with tons of examples. But be careful of his brutal exams, you really need to study for it. Not recommend to year 1 student to take it, since it will most likely kick you butt.
knows what he is talking about, cares about his students and communicates with them well, exceptional professor overall.
I would give a better rating except I think his marking criteria is vague and he does not communicate well in regards to what he expects from students in their papers. His lectures make his expertise obvious, but his pedagogical skills need some work. Overall, he is approachable and helpful when you want to talk during office hours.
As long as you pay attention in his class & understand it, it should be fairly easy.
Well, just want to let you know the avg of the midterm is around 48%, so you know how hard it is right? The multiple multiple choice section is very very tricky. The second half of the course focuses more on statistics, I am taking BUEC 232 this term so It helps a lot. I think my BUEC 232 prof makes the concept clearer than him.
Amazing prof! He's very knowledgable, a great lecturer, and he's really nice if you ask for help. Yeah, he's tough, but Philosophy isn't exactly what you should be taking if you're looking for an easy A. Put some work into it (by that i mean a lot), and you'll do fine. Plus his voice is absolutely amazing, so lectures are pleasant to attend.
Assignments are not hard. You can easily get 44 just by reading the ppt. Midterms are not easy. The final today was really long and hard. But the class is curved. Most students will get C or C+.
He's honestly one of the more interesting profs at SFU I've had. Clear, cohesive lectures summarize the reading material well. Dai's voice in lectures is amazing and captivating. Exams are tough - study hard and you'll do better than average! Class was graded on a bell-curve. Overall, an interesting course, taught by an equally interesting prof.
Course was about as difficult as it could possibly get, and his grading contributed to that, but hes an amazing prof. Hes a great lecturer, and hes pretty approachable and helpful if you go to him for extra help with your writing (which is quite advisable). Overall though, it was a really interesting course, and hes a great guy.
Good teacher, vey engaging and his lectures are very well delivered. Papers are relatively easy. However.... HIS MIDTERM IS SO F&*#NG DUMB.. each multiple choice is 4 marks.. which is ridiculous. 1 Midterm question is worth almost as much as half of a short answer (1 paragraph answer)..... I still recommend him, but complain about the exam grading.
Pretty tough prof, but worth it. Lecture are actually valuable and you learn a lot.
He is a great prof and a very knowledgeable one! However, I don't like his midterms!! His final was quite hard as well. You really gotta study! Wouldn't recommend taking this class if you are a first year!
This was the worst philosophy class I have ever taken. He gave absolutely zero feedback on the final paper aside from the grade, which was far from helpful. Marking on the midterms was inconsistent and he refused to explain what was missing if the mark was low. He was arrogant and unhelpful.
Absolutely gifted professor, you will rarely find a professor who is able to explain communicate complex philosophical ideas like he can.
Fascinating prof. Listening to his lectures is very enjoyable. He has clear understanding of the materials he's teaching, and is passionate about all these stuff and is really into philosophy . I would never want to miss a single lecture.
This is the second PHIL class I've taken with Dr. Heide, and I would take the rest of my PHIL classes with him if I could. He's very clear while making dense content digestible and interesting. His final was comprehensive and fair as well as his grading. Attend all the lectures if you're able to--nothing explains the content better than he can.
Though I think he is a very knowledgable instructor, his overall demeanor in the classroom came off as conceited. Unclear about expectations and did not give adequate or helpful feedback on essays. The class lacked a sense of welcomed discussion and was not a comfortable atmosphere conducive to learning. Regret taking.
awesome lecture. clear understanding and explanation of theories.
Lectures are great and enjoyable. He's really knowledgable and passionate about what he's teaching. But be prepared to read papers and write essays.
Great lecturer, difficult marker, cool guy. Made a difficult topic accessible and interesting through his lectures. Worth taking.
The man's a born lecturer. The course was on Kant, so brutally difficult, but his passion and knowledge on the topic made it more than bearable. Go to his office hour. It'll help you a lot.
A great prof! Lectures were very clear and helpful. Seems to genuinely care about students. Does a great job answering questions. Made difficult topics much more understandable and interesting! Lots of reading in writing but he made it enjoyable. Overall, I really liked him as a prof and would definitely take his class again!
You can tell that he's genuinely passionate for philosophy, I enjoyed going to his lectures, but not gonna lie, I was probably confused half the time (as interesting as they were), going to tutorial after really helped cleared things up.
With a voice like that, I would follow this man unto the depths of Valhalla and back.
i accidentally picked the hardest philosophy class as my elective (phil 105) and it lowered my gpa completely
After reading reviews on here, I didn't think the class would be bad. TRUST ME if you're not strong in math and word problems, do not take this! On his syllabus he has "in class assignments" however are actually quizzes. Went to his office multiple times and is more robotic than friendly. Never met a prof like that before. Absolutely hated class.
He thoroughly explains all concepts and formulas with a ton of examples, and he adds some humour into there as well. Makes a super tough class manageable.
Phil 105 with him is tough. Miss lecture and you're screwed. He writes his own book for the first half of the term which is free and the book you're supposed to buy is useless since everything you need is in lecture and tutorial. Concepts are hard to grasp and his in-class quizzes are tough. He tests you on that one thing he mentioned for one slide
Dai is really passionate and obviously is well-versed in philosophy, most of the grade is paper based and he doesn't have lecture slides so you actually need to show up to even slightly grasp what's going on. Readings are extremely difficult
very accommodating to online learning. i found his lecture slides to be super helpful and they helped explain the readings. asynchronous lectures so no real weekly schedule to follow just make sure you dont fall behind because theres a lot of reading and writing. overall great class!
I took Phil100W & Phil150 with him during Covid online & it was a breeze. I didn't even read all the material(cause there is a lot) & I got through with a B+ in both classes. The final exam consisted of essay questions, a week before he gave us a list of 16 questions & of those, 4 questions would be on the test. he also let us pick our test day.
Fantastic class! Found the course very challenging but he made it engaging. Seems like a really nice dude. Course was via zoom so never met him in person. Also, email his SFU account else he wont respond (he doesnt check canvas). Hope to take more of his classes in the future. Tests you on things he emphasizes in class. No tricks.
Dr. Heide is as good as it gets when it comes to a philosophy professor. He is direct and straightforward, stays on track, and really elucidates concepts well. No matter the topic, he managed to keep me focused almost every lecture. I was worried he would be super strict, or a tough marker but instead, he is understanding and a r fair marker. Great
Not much to say: class was boring, textbook heavy (if you don't understand the text, you won't do well on assignments- trust me), classes mandatory (trust me) tough marker with unclear expectations but he provided good constructive feedback. Perhaps I would have had a better experience if it were in person.
Would recommend if you're looking for slightly easier Q credit... First half of the course was mostly English stuff, second was probability. Tutorials felt like repetition of what had already been discussed in lecture and readings, but (very short) weekly quizzes were actually super helpful for ensuring consistent studying for exams.
This class is very tough for an intro class, there are "levels" assignments, you must pass the first level in order to start the next "level" and its difficult. there is a term paper and a final, together worth 70 percent of your grade at the end of the semester so only 30 percent is determined throughout the major portion of the semester.
Lectures were engaging and the material was super interesting . If you are interested in learning about personal identity, immortality or the meaning of life this class is for you! Readings can be confusing but lectures and tutorials were super helpful! For the final he gave us 16 short answer questions in advance, and 5 were on the test.
Excellent at explaining concepts in propositional logic, inductive arguments, and probability. This class focuses heavily on word problems and math, so if you want an easier Q credit or an interesting elective, I would recommend this class. Tutorials were not useful (just review of previous lecture) but are mandatory because of weekly quizzes.
The readings are super long and confusing, but if you go to lectures and tutorials you'll understand them. The lecture slides really help as well. Assignments and final were fair.
Fun course and great prof. Despite not being mandatory, lectures are very helpful as well as entertaining. The second half of the course goes into probability, where the textbook readings can sometimes overcomplicate concepts. If you are weak with math word problems, this section will be tricky to grasp. Quizzes and exams are very fair.
Dai Heide's grading system is tough and unforgiving. There was way too much material for the course to be an intro level philosophy course. His explanations were mediocre and oftentimes felt overcomplicated. The "levels" assignments portion of the course took up most of the semester and was only worth a 30%.
This was the worst class I took, as an international student trust me you will find it 10 times more difficult because of word problems. His book and lectures are poorly structured and he shows little respect or interest in helping the student. being good in math back in High School and having proficiency tests is not enough: the worst prof ever
One of the best lecturers Ive had at SFU. Down to earth, thoughtful course curriculum, and knows his material inside out. Course was very interesting and challenging in all the ways you want from a philosophy course. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE FOR AN EASY ELECTIVE. You will fail. Put the time in, and youll love this course.
Not what i thought of a phil class but pretty ok. The TA is helpful, but the prof don't like y to ask him during break time
8 Quizzes (best of 5), 1 MT & Final. The 1st half of the course is about logic and arguments and the 2nd half is on probability. Tests were fair where half is MC and the other is written. If you thoroughly understand all of the concepts and calculation problems on his slides, then you'll most likely do well. Be prepared for word problems.
He's a charismatic guy, but he seems very uncooperative and unwilling to help often. Not only will he not take questions during break, he doesn't help during the exam either. He also seems quite arrogant, as he once bragged about how philosophy majors make above-average salaries compared to most people. Dude needs to simmer down with the hubris.
If you hate writing, don't take this course. If you hate reading (especially confusing philosophical things), don't take this course. Actually, I hate both, skipped class and tutorials biweekly, yet I still passed so I don't know. Your TA is more significant for this course since they mark everything (mine was Jing-Hwan, 10/10 chill dude).
Nice guy, lectures are very clear. Its a 100 level phil class so not alot to say lol.
This is a difficult course, not what you'd expect. If you're considering taking 105 for a b-hum requirement, just don't. Do not. Seriously. There are easier & better phil/b-hum courses. Dr. Heide is fine, clearly knowledgable about the course and philosophy, but comes off performative and vain during lectures, and is unapproachable. Don't do it!
Prof. Heide was a good lecturer and explained the readings and related concepts well. That said his exams were a lot of work. His assignment grading scheme is difficult and unusual to get used to. Was available during office hours.
He's a good guy, I liked my TA too which helped. Lectures I found it quite dry though, if I didn't drink before lectures, I would be incredibly bored. So I didn't attend many, easy B-. I was at A- in levels before final paper and exam, so I really bombed those.
If you are in another major and want an elective that gets you the Q and Sci credits then do not take this class. If you are into Philosophy and it is your major, this is the perfect class for you as you will have to learn an insane amount. Pollon's same 105 course is way easier! I cannot stress this enough for non-Phil majors!!!!!!!
The lectures were very informative with helpful and relevant content. Philosophy in itself is hard so the papers (the levels) were a bit difficult for me. There are lots of readings but he goes over the majority of them in class which is very helpful. Uses good examples in lectures.
Avoid if you're looking for an online-friendly experience. If there is an opposite of online savvy, this is it. You have to hand in every paper in person & no class updates/readings on Canvas. The material is dense and as easy to parse as 17th-century writing sounds, which makes the lack of slides or audio recordings worse
Dr. Heide's style of lecturing is highly engaging and he explains most concepts and theories in detail. If you're interested in Early Modern philosophy, I'd highly recommend taking a class with him. Don't expect him to respond to your emails, however. He didn't respond to both of my emails, which is puzzling 'cause they were very simple questions
