You hardly ever need your lab book except to get directions for the lab or do the pre and post lab homework. Honestly you could probably get away with using someone else save yourself 80 bucks. Overall he's pretty funny and his class isn't hard.
He is very energetic and enthusiastic to teach and help us out. He always makes sure that we understand materials or not. He asks lots of questions during class, so if you don't like just sitting and listening, take his class! Exams are not easy, but as long as you study his slides and review questions, it should be fine.
He's a really nice guy and tries really hard. The problem is there is SO MUCH homework in this class. Theres no time left to study because he has a ridiculous amount of busy work assigned. I felt really micromanaged in this class.
Gives so many extra assignments each week it is near impossible to study for any upcoming test. The day of his exams you have 2 additional "test prep" assignments in addition to the 3 you have every week. He grades every single detail with heavy scrutiny. If you like to be micromanaged - take him; if you have a brain and study your own way - don't
He is pretty funny and always makes topics very interesting! Im taking both of his lecture and lab. He has weekly assignments for both lecture and lab, but it doesnt take long to finish them (maybe up to 30 minutes to finish each one). His exams are not that hard, but I feel that memorizing is not enough to make high grade.
His lecture demands you to participate very much. It seems he has many assignments, but most of them are just optional. No quizzes (I love it!). The assignment due on the exam day finishes in 10 minutes. If you have your own way of studying, he respects that. So, I didn't do any optional assignments. I had plenty of time to prepare for the exams.
His exams are directly from his lectures. He has online assignments (MasteringBiology), but most of them are just extra things that you can do. There are five 10 minutes online quizzes due at each exam. I did all of extra Mastering because I found them helpful to me. He requires 2 hrs preparing for each exam, so I studied at science center.
His lecture is absolutely amazing! He genuinely cares about how well his students are doing and definitely will go an extra mile to help. This is my second time taking this course, and he relates difficult topics to real-world scenario so well that I was able to understand the materials so much better than last time!
Hard to understand. Impossible to study for the tests. Tests are ridiculous, short answers are simple if you pay attention. Study, read the book, do the online homework, and the weekly reports.
He's nice and always there to help you. He is tough in grading assignments. He requires you to be in his class regularly. His test won't be so hard if you do most of the MasteringBiology and Weekly Report that he gives you. If you want extra credit, you can visit his office during his office hours. He expects you to ask questions if you're confused
He was a good professor as long as you put in effort. If you try and make a real effort he helps a lot. I took it in a summer semester and he was very helpful. Kind of hard to understand.
This would be a great professor to take if science is a struggle for you. He has plenty of extra assignments and helps that will let you learn and memorize the material. If you are great at studying on your own, or if science is no problem for you, then you will probably find the extra work pretty tedious. Dude is really entertaining.
A lot of reading. He has a heavy Japanese accent because he is from Japan. He's funny! I learned more in his biology class than I have in any biology class. He is not an easy teacher but the hard work pays off.
If you'd like to learn, you should take him! When I took him last year, I needed to change my studying habit from just memorizing to actually understanding the materials. It was not easy, but I learned the most. If I didn't have taken his class, I'd have hard time in Nursing now. He is funny and caring. He has mandatory online assignments.
Best professor I've ever had. Professor Hoshino truly cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. He really makes you work for your grade. He does go fast on some lectures, so I'd definetley recommend to voice/video record his lectures so you could rewrite your notes after class. 10/10 would recommend :-)
If you want easy A, don't take him. If you want to actually learn, he is the BEST BIOLOGY INSTRUCTOR EVER. You never get bored in his class. Though his exams are not easy, attend class, STUDY the materials and you will be fine. He always offers help. His assignments are optional. If you miss them, those are replaced by exams.
Daiju is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He really cares for the students and truly wants everyone to succeed. His tests are a little difficult but as long as you study and pay attention in class then you should do fine, and plus his lectures are fun and entertaining. Gives plenty extra credit opportunities. Highly recommend!
He is VERY hard to understand, makes students study too much!!!!! He wants close to 9 hrs a day!!!!! Won't help much for anything, and his lectures/lab are a snooze fest. Wouldn't recommend to anyone unless they have previous biology knowledge.
This is my first time to take Biology course, and it was REALLY hard. But, he made all difficult and complicated concepts simple enough to understand. His syllabus says that you need to study at least 9 hrs a week, but I actually only spent about 4 to 5 hrs a week. Exams are hard, but as long as you understand his slides, it is manageable.
Attendance is fairly important. He is very helpful if you allow him to be, he really wants you to learn and retain the information. Test are a little hard but his reviews help. They are just really long, but he gives your points for doing them and turning them in. His class isnt hard it just takes alot of work
He demands you a lot!! but makes sure that you "know" the materials. Memorizing is not enough to do well in his class. If you expect to learn all in lecture, not study outside, don't take his class. I learned a lot through his lecture and the way he taught made me love Biology even more. Homework was optional, challenging but helped me understand.
Well, his labs are fun but the lectures are heavy. Makes his own homework online hard to solve and not even helpful!! asks you about every single detail in his tests and homework. Goes fast with his heavy lectures, so you have to work on your own again at home. He couldn't make me love biology or to do good with his teaching method.
Daiju is one of the best professors I have ever had. His class is very hard but he gives you every opportunity to succeed. He provides tons of practice tests online and reviews and will help you any way possible. You won't be successful if you plan on just showing up. You have to actually put the effort in but it is worth it!
He is an Amazing prof. He makes you love biology. Makes every topic interesting. makes his class very interactive .
He is a super difficult teacher. I would not recommend taking him unless you are very confident in biology. His tests are VERY difficult but lab exams are a little easier. He is a nice guy and makes the class interesting. He offers multiple small extra credit opportunities.
Daiju is fantastic and super motivated to teach you. He sticks to the schedule on the syllabus so you know what to read ahead of time. That said, it's a college level science course and if you want to do well, read the book, preferably before the relevant lecture. The pre-test is a good indicator as to how you'll do on the test so use it.
By far, the best professor I've had. Those who complained did so because they didn't want to do the work or were hoping for an easy A. Biology is not an easy course. Daiju wants you to actually walk away with knowledge - not just memorize terms and forget about them when class is done. He cares and he is always available to help. AMAZING teacher!!
Daiju is by far one of the best profs I have ever had, and i've been in school a while. He is very friendly and gives extra credit throughout the semester. His tests are difficult, but as long as you pay attention and take notes are easy to pass. He gives detailed reports on each exam that show your progress and give a lot of information!
Professor Daiju is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is so passionate about his job, he loves teaching and really cares for the students to understand all the concepts. That being said, it is definitely not an easy class but it is worth it. His tests are very difficult but the online assignments and the class recordings help a lot.
Very clear ICR. Super accessible outside of class. Very enthusiastic and caring. Puts more effort into teaching than any professor I have had. Daiju is so concerned about students well being it is so refreshing. He is tough, but is so clear in what we must do as students. He gives TONS of prep for exam which is awesome!!!!
Easily the best professor I have ever had. He really wants all of his students to learn. He makes a difficult subject fascinating. I'm an english major and this rivaled any class in my wheelhouse as far as enjoyment, even though it wasn't a subject that interested me before. He is amazing. Go to class. You won't regret it.
Daiju is a professor who CARES. If you ever ask him on how to study he takes time during his office hours and shows you how to succeed. I took his summer course and not gonna lie it is a lot but he makes it fun. Would recommend having him for a 16 week course as well as having him as a professor period. He's the best!
Biology 1 was not an easy course over the summer, but Daiju's lectures were amazing. He keeps everyone entertained and ready to learn. He provides a lot of practices for the exam. He wants every student to pass his class and learn from lectures as well. I recommend!
He is really a great teacher, Bio 1407 was my second class with him. Biology is a subject you can memorize but he actually makes you think. His lectures are amazing. If you wanna learn something I will highly recommend him.
Hes a nice guy, seems to care about students. But, hes so hard to understand. He doesnt explain things clearly. Tons of homework that doesnt help. Tried to trick you on tests. Had him for lab, and Berg for lecture. I recommend you take Berg for both.
If you are "tell me exactly what to do" type learner, don't take him. He really expects you to learn the materials, not just at a surface level. We have weekly assignments, and I found them very helpful. I didn't see the same questions on the exam, but they helped me with what I needed to learn for the exam.
He is a nice person, but his tests are so difficult. I had Dr. Jodhka for lab and she taught so well. The tests are so wordy.
His lecture is AMAZING. I took AP bio in high school, but I am absolutely LEARNING now in his class. He engages his students during class A LOT. so if you want to just listen to a lecture, avoid his class. He has online quizzes for each exam, but those are optional. His exam is hard but clear. I took AP bio exam and I found it harder than his.
I took his bio1 a couple of years ago, and now I can say he is definitely the BEST. I'm a senior at UTD now, and if I didn't take his class, I don't think I've made this far. I learned a lot about not only biology concepts but also how to learn effectively and time management and such. Take him if you would like to be successful in the long run!
I loved taking Daiju for Bio1406, his lectures in my opinion were great! Daiju is the professor that really cares about his students learning and understanding the material. The exams are made to make you think critically & he helps his students understand their learning style. This is an amazing class and he supports SI.
He makes sure you understand material, not just memorize. Get ready to interact with class mates
He seems great professor and make you effort this class. His test was very hard, because you have to understand what he say. I would take him again if I want to.
Overall he is a good professor. Just don't tell him the wording in his tests are confusing or he will roast you. Overall he is nice but can be condescending at times. If you ever have a comment/conversation make sure to fully explain what you mean and let him know that your not attacking him in anyway because he might take it personal.
Hoshino cares and has good intentions, but he is a tough grader and tests are extremely wordy and sometimes confusing. Teaching a summer course the same exact way a normal 16 week semester would be taught, but on extreme steroids. He does give practice exams that range from 25-150 questions each. Can't just memorize, must understand.
This class is harder than it needs to be for no reason. The lecture videos are very long. boring and no help. I went to SI for help many times and it was helpful. Even at the beginning of the semester, he showed how few people get an A in his class which shows a lot like it was a flex. The test is hard and some of the stuff is not in the lecture.
His online course page was the most organized. The lecture videos were very engaging and energizing, but make you think. I actually learned a lot, rather than just memorizing things like I did in HS. Most of HW was optional, but beneficial. Simple memorization was not enough for exams, but if you understand the contents, they were fine.
His classes were all recorded, but most of the videos were full of energy and interesting, not like other online I took! He has quizzes in videos and review assignments for each exam. Those helped me sooo much. Home lab experiments were fun, but there was so much reading for the lab HW. I mostly used what he provided, and I did okay for exams.
The teacher definitely cares about his job and attempting to teach the course to the best of his ability. This, I do respect. I don't at all particularly like how convoluted the assignments are, and how over complicated his page directories are. If you want to find an assignment/see what's due and when it is, good luck. Even the ICR is a maze.
I was very nervous with this all online thing, but I didnt need to worry in his class! All assignment due dates are on one page in the syllabus, all contents were in one location, just need to go through the stuff provided in a weekly folder. His lecture was challenging, but I actually learned and still remember, not like other classes that I took
If you're a full time student, have a job, have children or have a life, it will be hard to pass.8 hours of lecture a week, 3-5 assignments a week, tests every 2-3 weeks with essay questions. , I'm sure he was a good teacher before Covid but online he is so hard to follow. It got to the point where I was not learning and just trying to get a grade.
Expect this class to take up a lot of your time, but his lectures are always fun. He's incredibly passionate and highly knowledgable about biology, so don't be afraid to ask questions bc he will respond in a timely manner. He's clearly trying to get his students to succeed in classes post-bio. One of the best science profs. I've ever had!
Really nice man; very passionate about bio. Good for anyone majoring in bio or interested in it (not me). EXTREMELY test heavy (weekly quizzes, 5 two-part tests + final, 3 practicals, 1 big lab report). Kind of a perfectionist, but easy to pass if you take good notes. Wont take again b/c too many tests & I have other classes to study for.
This is the first class that i am really LEARNING, not just memorize words or things mentioned in class. He offers many resources for us to use, but no need to do them, including week assignments/quiz. I am just taking exams and maintaining high B. The exam amount is same as my previous bio 1 teacher (I dropped). Manageable with 4 other classes
He is very organized and passionate about Biology. Lots of resources for help (very useful). Lecture is very engaging and he definitely wants you to learn, not just get by. If this class is a checkbox, I don't recommend him because you need to spend time actually studying. 5 exams and optional weekly quizzes, 3 lab exams and 1 lab report.
He's very nice and understanding but I wish I maybe took him in person. It was very hard to follow, learn, keep up and get a good grade while also understanding. it was very stressful while having other responsibilities to the point where I got sick. hardest class I've ever taken and could not afford to drop, as pay out of pocket.
I was shocked by the first exam, but after I start spending time actually studying, exams were not that hard like other reviewers say. His class was divided by each week and week folder had some videos and a quiz at the end. Very clear and helpful. His videos were very engaging, but if you want just to hear easy explanations, it might be hard.
If you cant spend the same amount of time that you would do in person, dont take him. I dont know why other people say it is a lot, i thought it was normal. I learned and actually remember what i learned from him, unlike other classes that I made A. He provides practice questions for each exam and clear rubrics writing assignments.
Amazing and engaging lecture videos! I feel I learned very little in my Bio1 (I still made A), but I learned A LOT and I still remember what he explained and discussed. It was definitely more challenging than high school level biology like my Bio1, but his quizzes helped a lot. He also provides feedback for each exam and weekly announcements.
Love his class. He is very organized and provides lots of recourses to study. Videos were very engaging and interesting. He really wants us to think critically, not just memorize words. Weekly assignments and 5 exams. In Bio 1, I didn't learn much, but I ACTUALLY learned so much in his class. Need to study a lot, but its worth it.
Honestly I don't think i've taken a better professor. After failing Biology last semester I realized I really couldn't follow the last professor. Daiju is very clear and gives GREAT lectures to connect the material. Lab was easy brezzy. If you study... and pay attention in class YOU WILL PASS.
Take this professor! Well structured class, no busy work, engaging lectures. Preps you for tests with mock homework exams. Goes above and beyond for his students, fun class activities that really help the material stick. Test questions are straightforward. Questions arent equally weighted(in your favor). Responsive, compassionate and hilarious.
Amazing professor had alot of fun
I LOVED this class! He is hilarious and made the class enjoyable. He was always ready to answer your questions and made sure you understood before walking away. You have to make sure you watch the videos that are mandatory for the next day, if not, you're going to be lost. Overall, the best professor I've ever had!
I really like the way Daiju teaches! I've never had a professor w this much energy & he really cares enough to help if you are struggling. The txtbook isnt required, the lab book is only used like 4x & the content itself is pretty heavy so watch his lecture videos before class & use the concept quizzes to study. 10/10 professor just a hard class.
Hoshino really cares about your learning. First exam, if we did bad he gave us a second chance to make it up to get used to how the exams will be continuing on. He provides practice questions, mock exams, and extra credit to help you succeed on your exams. Still study heavy but all microbiology classes will be. Definitely recommend.
Daiju is the best. Science courses are hard already.. but if you have a professor who is not the best, they can be 10x harder. Daiju is a GREAT professor. Clear expectations, organized in canvas, helpful.. WATCH HIS LECTURE VIDEOS. I never touched the book. His lectures are amazing! He has a great personality too! 10/10! Take him!
Made me want to drop out of school and change my major. Whenever I would ask a question he would just tell me look at the powerpoint when the powerpoint was the reason I was lost. There's so much I can say but can't cause of the guidelines. Just pick another teacher to save your money, time, and energy.
Pros: - Kind - Passionate for Biology - Organized syllabus (ICR) Cons: - Reversed learning for Mon/Tues class - Vague powerpoints, need to use book and youtube. Taught myself - Hard to understand - Lab time ran over a few times. Felt rushed - Gives pushback when questions were asked over instructions - Class-load of 2 science classes. Stressed!!
You need to watch videos or read textbook before the first class of a week, but I LOVED it! We took a quiz and discussed each question with other classmates. That made me learned A LOT! He provides lots of resources, and I didn't need any other study materials. He was always ready to help and answered questions. Recommend.
Was hard to understand him. Talks really fast.
Mr. Hoshino is difficult to understand, and he talks really fast. The inclass activities are extremely hard. More than half of the class dropped from his class. Lab was really fun, but lecture was just a nightmare. If possible, find another micro professor.
Bio major? Then, you MUST take him. I wish I had taken him for BIO 1. I learned so much and so in-depth. He provides all what you need to do well in his class, mock unit exams, study guides, optional questions, etc. His class is always engaging and interactive. He doesn't let you go without solid understanding of the materials.
I took a different professor for micro this semester, and now I realize how amazing Dr. Hoshino is. I was overwhelmed with challenging questions in class and on exams, but thanks to that, I performed much better this semester. I learned more with him last semester than I did this semester. I was initially annoyed, but now I am incredibly grateful.
Provides all study materials you need (othr reviews). Mock unit exams (some questions similar to exam). Review questions in video lectures-helpful. 1000 point class: 700 lec 300 lab. 15 points extra cred. for all studies guide done. Exams (+final) had extra credit questions. Final easier than unit exams, but covers all material. Work for A-will get
I took micro again, and taking this class really shaped me to do well! I took Dr. Hoshino class for fall, and retook with another professor for Spring. He really pushes you to learn, and apply it!! Be patient, and study! And you will do well!
Was not very understanding about assignments and when it came to grades. Lectures would be very fast, and he would expect you to keep up as well, the exams covered many chapters at once.
Trouble defining what mastery of material is required in lecture, although similar problems exist with most college level science professors. Lab is nearly perfect, and I mean perfect, it was great, super fun. The in class quizzes are much harder than exam questions, but are open note/book.
Honestly, if you can, steer clear of this teacher. Assignments and grading are a complete mess. You never know what's going on. It's like they just randomly throw grades at you. Getting feedback or help? Might as well try talking to a brick wall. And don't even get me started on how they treat students.
Mr. Daiju is really passionate for teaching, gives good explanations, and is hilarious! He technically assigns HW, but it is not mandatory (you're fine as long as you do well on exams as it replaces those grades). Definitely do the study guides and lab questions. Take him!
Do not listen to the negative comments!! I have learned so much from his class. His teaching method is very conceptual so I recommend watching his pre recorded lectures BEFORE coming to class it helps a lot, this course is not easy, study and ask questions, A B C grade is reachable in this class. Take time to review your exam after he has graded.
Watch EVERY lecture BEFORE class, THOROUGH notes, do EVERY study guide (will be extra credit on final), do ALL assignment (optional but WILL help your grade), don't stress on the research paper (not worth enough to affect your grade), FOCUS IN LAB or exam will be gibberish. mock UNIT exams are 95% similar. great professor but you HAVE to work HARD
I can't recommend Daiju highly enough! He gives you plenty of study resources and assignments to practice. If you don't do well on assignments, he'll replace them if you score well on exams. His lectures are always engaging and fun, and he is really great about showing the connection between concepts from previous lectures and newer material.
If you prefer lecture based learning, this class isnt for you. He makes you watch all his lecture videos outside of class, by the way sometimes exceeding more than an hour and twenty minutes. Then when you come into class, he quizzes you over it. He only teaches one day a week. Not to mention he is very hard to understand and talks very fast.
Daiju is an amazing professor! He really strives for his students to succeed in his class. He provides lecture/lab recordings in case you miss class, along with many materials to prepare for upcoming test. However, in order to really succeed, you do have to put in effort when it comes to studying and make time for this class.
Mr Hoshino is an amazing professor who cares about his students. He expects a lot but he also gives you all the resources you need to get there. He is fair in how he grades and the difficulty of the course, he sets realistic expectations and goals. He's very funny, charismatic, and kind. If you like lecture-heavy courses you'll love his.
Dr. Hoshino is caring and knowledgeable. Offers a lot of tools (mock exams, vocab check, current and previous pre-recorded lectures, and even personalized stats after every test). He is also very fun! His accent is not really an issue, just pay attention.
He is a great professor. Funny, kind, and caring outside of the classroom. However, he is your Japanese dad when it comes to your academics cold, blunt, and sometimes cruel. Please know this is from a place of love because he has extremely high expectations for himself and he sees his students as an extension of himself.
If you want to learn and have fun at the same time, take Daiju's class! He summarizes the material w/ PowerPoint slides, and his lectures are engaging (he even records them for us)! Not an "easy A", and you will put in the work, but you'll be glad you did. Daiju cares about our success and it shows in how he teaches and guides his students.
He will talk NONSTOP in lectures / most of lab. Lab "activities" are not engaging, and the test reviews are not that helpful. If u like lecture-based, he might be okay for you if you aren't taking any other classes. 5 lecture tests, 3 lab tests, final. No grades get dropped, and minimal extra credit. Will lose points if he doesn't like your notes.
Professor Hoshino is honestly one of the best professors I've had. He's really attentive and gives amazing feedback after every test. He also has many tools to ensure you're understanding the material (mock exams, vocab checks, etc). As for his accent it's not bad at all. I took his summer course and it was genuinely a good experience.
I took Daiju for Bio 1/2. His lectures moved fast cause there's a lot of content to cover but Daiju made it easy to digest and gave real world examples. Try not to miss lecture. There are recordings you can review and he gives practice problems for tests. I truly learned a lot! Take his class if you want a solid bio foundation for future classes!
