He really has a hard time coming down to everyone elses level. He moves much to quick to understand.
is a horrible teacher! i am a math major and can teach better than him! if he knew what was good for him, he'd go back to where he came from and wouldnt ruin math for students
Had a hard time with this class last semester. Part of it was that there is a lot of new material covered, but I really didn't feel like this teacher made things easier. It's not that he doesn't know about math, because he knew what he was doing. But he had a hard time teaching it to us.
I could not follow his style of teaching. He moved too quickly; taking many shortcuts with out explaining them. I think he would be better suited teaching higher level math classes.
I think he's really the sort of teacher that does best with a small class. I've heard some not so great things, but I think he's awesome. He's pretty funny and easygoing and willing to work with your schedule. He listens to the class and tries hard to help them understand.
Daishu is an excellent teacher, very personalable and easy going.
He's VERY strict on attendance. Even if some of your absences were excused, he may still drop you without warning or recourse. He takes a lot of shortcuts in his class, if you're not very comfortable with mathematics, this will make your experience much more difficult. He's a smart guy, but I think he should stick with upper level math courses.
Great teacher, he shows you shortcut to the long and tedious problems, Maths is all about seeing the patterns and formulas at this level, he does run through concepts quickly, but will stop and help if you need it. do the homework even though you wont be graded on it, maths is a subject that you need to daily to keep fresh.
I didnt like his class at all. I had to drop the class because I failed two of his exams..... Dont take it if you dont have to.
Had him for calculus 1, he moves quickly but is a good teacher. You must pay close attention. If you don't understand something tell him, he will stop and break things down step by step until you understand. You must do the hmwk, then the next class he will ask if there are questions, just say which number you want him to explain, tests can be tricky
If you are struggling, will not help you. Will not even help you to drop. Rather clear teacher.
I had him for Math 180 and he is a very chill professor he moves at a fairly quick pace but as long as you do the non mandatory homework you'll do fine. Tests are fairly simple as long as you do the homework and pay attention when he lectures. prepares you well for the final
He's really laid-back and easy to get along with. He'll answer all the class's questions and tell you everything you need to know for the tests.
He wasn't a very good professor. He was a little rude and moved way too fast. Whenever someone went up to him to ask him a question, he would simply respond, yeah? so... He was in the least bit helpful and now I get to retake math... Great.
I was only able to pass this class by studying more then I have ever had to for a math class. Luckily I had the book since this was more useful to me then attending class and listing to lectures. Also I had a hard time communicating with this teacher as he did not always answer the e-mails sent to him.
Not a bad class, very easy if you apply yourself and do the homework. He is very laid back, helpful and is willing to spend time outside of class meeting with students and discussing their weaknesses. He prepares you extremely well for the final.
He is by far the worst professor I have ever had at UNM. He is completely unfair and impossible to get a hold of. He moves way to fast through the material and just expects you to keep up. I have been on the deans list for the last 4 semesters but not this semester thanks to him. Never take class with him!
He moves really fast! He doesn't give reviews for the tests which are only 7 questions, and he doesn't go over the homework or quizzes unless you specifically ask him. But he's funny and will help you if you go to office hours.
I would not recommend Daishu. He scoffed at questions, didn't answer e-mails, and wouldn't make eye contact. He has an err of superiority that I do not understand. The rudest and most unapproachable professor I have ever had. He clearly does not enjoy teaching.
Learned very little in class. I had to rely on youtube to learn the material. Little help during office hours and seamed not to care whether or not you were successful. Test reviews were not actually based on the test, as absurd as that sounds. Regret taking this class from him.
Daishu's class is perhaps the best math professor I've had in a while. He makes sure you understand the material - if you do have question or are unclear of the material, it's your duty to ask him! His office hours are helpful, and you'll laugh every class. He's a funny guy! It's a lot of work, but if you put forth the effort, a B or A is possible.
This professor doesn't care one bit if you pass or not, and if you go in to find out your current grade he will either tell you flat-out not to ask or scoff and complain. The test questions don't correlate with the lectures and he does not review for the tests. I do not understand the material any better and would not recommend him.
He was very clear on what we went over and what he expects. We finished all of our work for the class a week early and gave us about 4 classes to study for the final. Before every test, he goes over and reviews the day before. I liked him as a math teacher and I'm taking him for 150 next semester.
Horrible! only a few people passed class and he would not curve
This guy is a complete a**!!! He pretty much regurgitates the book and then when you ask him a question he looks at your like your an id*ot. For all of his exams he chooses the hardest problems he could think of. Avoid this a*hole as much as you can...
His explanations were always clear even at eight in the morning. He would go out of his way to help his students. If you do your work, you'll have no problem.
You need to be a human calculator to keep up! If you're not strong in math without a calculator, you'll get lost. He will work with you and help you, but you have to go to his office hours. He really acts like he could care less if you pass or fail and isn't good about answering questions in class.
Honestly I think he did fine. He is a good teacher, he knows his stuff, but his methods just take some getting used to. Its hard to follow him at first and the first test isn't easy, but after that everything gets progressively easier.
I had a love hate relationship with this guy. I was never supposed to be in this level math so i didn't learn a single new thing. His methods made me hate him, but by the end of it all, i improved my math skills and my understanding of principles because of his methods. You will NOT use a calculator for anything. Learn to be efficient in your work.
I had a problem with this teacher because I was not suppose to be at this level math to begin with so he did not teach me anything new. Along with this he did a terrible job grading my papers due to the fact that I kept having to go back to him to get points for things he over looked. I generally had to help him grade my papers not good.
A cool guy, but not a good teacher. Almost every student in my class went into each exam completely unprepared. DO NOT EVER ask when his office hours are, he will probable yell at you. More than half of the class dropped and he did not seem to care.
He is possibly the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. He is unhelpful, is meticulously anal for the littlest mistakes, and he doesn't hesitate to fail a student who understands the concepts but needs repetition to succeed. Take this class if you want to fail your first semester in calculus!
His lectures were very fast-paced and information-filled. Daishu wasn't great about answering questions in class. He had a laid back attitude though which made him a bit more approachable outside of class.
UNM should stop hiring math teachers that don't understand math. For me, this class was just me teaching myself because daishu didn't know how to do anything. Oh, and he loses your hw, tells you it's somehow your fault, and gives you a zero for it. Ridiculous.
Daishu is a terrible teacher. He does not try to teach fundamentals. He just reads proofs from the book and does the hardest problems he can find with no explanation of how he arrives at his answers. He is a super hard grader. I would love to see him lose his job at UNM. Teachers like this could make someone want to change their major.
If you ask him something he will answer your question, but when it comes to exams, he reviews what you ask not what is going to be covered on the exam so you WILL freak out when you see it. Also he grades incorrectly and if you fail to catch the mistakes, you will lose points.
By way the worst I've ever had. He's so disorganized; he lost a bunch of my written hw and then blamed me. I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually know how to do calculus because he grades everything wrong. Seriously, worst instructor ever.
He's such a joke. Doesn't answer questions, does example problems wrong on the board and doesn't respond to emails. It's like he wants you to fail. Unless you're naturally brilliant at math and are willing to pay to teach yourself calculus, avoid him.
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. I went to him in office hours and he literally said I wasn't smart enough to be an engineering major. He's really arrogant too. Not sure why, since he could never answer questions correctly about homework. Seriously, awful.
Learned more from our TA than from him...
So, with Komagata, he just doesn't really care, which sucks. But, as long s you're not easily offended and are okay with his ego, you can talk to him in officee hours for hw help. I like math ad am pretty good at it but only barely passed the class.
NEVER ASK WHEN HIS OFFICE HOURS ARE. HE WILL YELL AT YOU IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE CLASS.
He's nice up until the drop date. And that's when the class actually begins and he starts to show how bad he really is at math. Couldn't get through any sample problems without make major mistakes. And he's a really harsh grader. Doesn't curve at all, even when our test average was below a 50%. Good job UNM, for hiring terrible teachers.
Kay, I know everyone hates him. I don't think he's satan or anything, but calc 2 is hard enough as it is, and he just made it more confusing. Even someone whose good at math would feel lost. I didn't like him, but that's just my opinion.
Pretty much expects you to come in knowing everything already. He doesn't actually teach you anything. Good luck to all who get stcuk with him.
Okay, so I admit that I'm not the greatest at math, BUT I'm the type that compensates by always doing the homework and studying really hard. It's served me well for every class except Daishu's. It appears that there is no hope for you unless you are naturally brilliant. Needless to say, I was disappointed in him as a professor.
I don't know what to think about all these people who gave Daishu a bad review. He is awesome!!! Explains everything very clear and knows what he is talking about. I took calc 2 in the summer with him and honestly it wasn't that hard.just study, ask question and you will do okay. Even curved our first test!!
Daishu is a great instructor. He gives challenging exams and quizzes, but thats the whole point, its a challenge. He has high expectations for his students, but is also very willing to help in office hours. You earn your grade in this class, which is how college SHOULD be. His methods teach you HOW to derive math, not just easy memorization.
This guy is not very good at teaching. Yes you will pass if you ignore your other classes and put all your effort into this one. Honestly algebra was not meant to this hard. I retook it at cnm and the instructor there was /WAY/ more helpful than this guy.
Horrible. Nothing on the lectures really corresponded with the quizzes/exams. He will try and find any little thing to mark you off. I've tried asking for his help so many times and he just scoffed or just simply ignored me. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS. The worst teacher I've ever had.
Daishu is aloof and sometime patronizing. He doesn't really care if you are having a hard time understanding. If you don't know any trig before taking this class then you are in trouble. You also can't use a calculator. The book homework is not required but you need it to pass. I would avoid this professor.
A girl in my class asked a question, and he started laughing at her. Either switch teachers, or drop. HORRIBLE.
Komagata really doesn't care much about his students. He truly seems to enjoy embarrassing them and showing how intelligent he is, even though he himself makes a number of mistakes. Never felt prepared for a single test, even though I put in a fair effort for the class.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who struggles with math. Komagata is extremely patronizing in class, although he is really helpful when you go in for office hours.
if you need help, stop him in his lecture, and simply ask. he will keep moving if nobody asks questions. otherwise, he will make sure the class gets the material if questions are being asked. also, go to his office hours if you struggle! otherwise, his tests are not bad, just pay attention to every detail and take your time. do the suggessted hw!
He is a very hard professor when it came to TRIG. He is very helpful and will help you out if you need it. I never had a problem with him but if you are not good with math then do not take him for TRIG.
He cracks jokes, makes algebraic mistakes constantly, gets irritated at comments from the students attending the class. Is a very hard grader when it comes to notation. Gives the quiz on the material long after you have covered it or right after. Does not have great communication skills. Take math with another instructor if you want an enjoyable ex
Several times I had the right answer on quizzes and tests and showed him it just wasn't in the format he wanted so he gave me no points and this is everything from using sine instead of tan to putting things in rational form.
Gives quizzes and tests over material not covered. Some of his quizzes he assigns are next to impossible (2-pages of pointless algebraic manipulation that takes hours). Does not give enough time for in-class quizzes. He does not show what steps he takes to get answers during examples. Very tough grader. Skip on this guy even as a last resort.
made a comment during office hours when I was asking for help "oh, this how you people do math here" when I asked for clarification he said that he was from Hawaii and they do math differently.
This guy seriously take a lot of points for every little single thing. He takes off 1 2 of the points if you have the wrong notation. He does not provide any credit and your grade is based on 3 exams and weekly quizzes. He makes a lot of errors and skips some steps. He goes super fast and does not give you credit for homework. Horrible. Avoid him
If you get stuck taking his class be prepared. The class is designed to be difficult and it doesn't help that he isn't helpful. Moves extremely fast through the material and doesn't give opportunities for extra help or resources or bringing up a grade. He is unfriendly. Textbook is extremely unhelpful.
This class is hard, and the professor does not provide any help whatsoever. Your entire grade is based on four tests, so if you bomb the first one drop ASAP. He rushes through material and examples and provides no explanations.
Tough grader. He doesn't accept late assignments, not even if it is a minute late. Yes, he requires the assignment to be turned it before class starts, and once class starts he closes the folder where it is to be turned in. The material is hard and he goes really fast. He is really smart and knows his material, he is just too rough on grading.
He is a very tough grader, and he goes through the material fast. On the tests he puts problems that we never covered in class. He gives out one or two quizzes per week. If you don't put an equal sign or a theta sign were he wants it he will mark off points for that. If you can never take his class, he is really an awful teacher.
He is a great professor and mathematician (perhaps the best at UNM). I understand not taking him if you don't enjoy math, but if you do; his class allows a student to grow rapidly in the subject of math. Many classes I've had are more so trying to get all students to a certain level of understanding and not much beyond, his class is not like this.
I've heard many complaints about this teacher but I personally thought he was a great teacher. He will explain if you have questions and does provide office hours and review days. His lessons are fast so it is helpful to look over the section he is covering in the book before class. He's a tough grader, but he prepares you well for upper level math
He is a harsh grader, has extremely fast lectures, and is really rude. You better be in class because he give so many quizzes. Not only does he grad heard but there are problems way worse that what we ever did in class or for homework.
better take a different instructor
I had already taken trig before this class, but Komagata grades so harshly that I feared I would lose my scholarship over this silly class. If you take his class, get ready to look over tests desperately trying to fix syntax errors. The answer does not matter, you HAVE to make sure all of your work is perfect. Avoid taking this professor.
He rushes through lessons, skips steps, and gives many pop quizes. He is a very harsh grader and doesnt sympathize. His tests are very difficult, and he does not prepare you for what will be on it. I would suggest switching to another teacher.
Terrible teacher showed him several times questions I did right and he told me they were right but he wouldn't regrade. Barely looks at your work better act like your writing for a textbook.
Your only hope of passing this class is reteaching yourself everything after lectures. What he teaches has nothing to do with what he quizzes on, he frequently skips steps, and his "explanations" are so confusing that you walk away knowing less than before.
more then half of my class drooped and i think only 10 pasted out of 70
Very unapproachable, Grades really hard, takes off way too much points for minor syntax.
Takes off a lot of points for minor things. Fast passed. Test are very short and relatively easy but like I said he takes off a lot of points for minor things. He gives clear lectures but when you confront him individually, he has this "you should know" mentality. Would recommend someone else.
he s not good explaining topics.
Trig is not a very hard subject though. All you need to learn are some basics sin, cos formula and thats all. This teacher tries to solve as maximum problem as possible in the class and don't generally focuses on web assign. But don't forget to submit all the take home quizzes on time coz it matters alot of grade for this class
Too smart to teach and he likes to show his skills far from the topic
The only way I got through this course was watching ProfRobBob on Youtube, after Komagata taught the class too disconnected. He was sarcastic in his grading; making fun of the way people were having trouble. He taught the entire hour, but would not wholly listen to questions before answering them, so any question taught would lead to confusion.
It may be because I took this course in the summer, but he works through examples very quickly and it can be hard to keep up. If you have a question, however, he is really nice and thorough with his explanations. He also expects a lot of memorization of formulas and nip-picky stuff for exams, but it isn't too bad.
I thought he was great. He's really funny without trying to be, is interested in seeing his students succeed, and takes the long view regarding Trig, and lets you know what you need to know in future math sequences and physics. I highly recommend him, but be prepared to actually work and study. If math's your thing, Daishu's your guy.
Take this class if you are going to need upper level math courses for your major, or if you like math. If not avoid at all costs. He's a good mathematician and tries to teach but he is so fast I found myself just struggling to write things down. He will take off a point for every minuscule detail - getting the right answer is not enough.
Great Teacher! He is a tough grader, but he is an excellent teacher to take if you plan to take upper division classes. The things he teaches, and the way he teaches, will directly prepare you for Calc (and make Calc a lot easier)
Unclear. Inconsistent with his own standards. Made huge algebraic and concept mistakes. Ex. of his misunderstanding of the material he teaches: when asked to find area using optimization techniques 4 pre-calc class, he said that u need calc to figure this out. But, it was later shown by another, it can b solved algebraically. Made errors in grades
His lectures are very fast and hard to follow if you haven't already read through the section of the book. Even if you have read through the book he will confuse you with his lectures sometimes. Is an extremely hard grader and will take a point off from anything wrong with your work leading up to the answer. I would really recommend not taking him.
Tough grader to say the least, goes over the material at near lightspeed using shortcuts that he sometimes explains. Tons of homework. Would not recommend him
If you can, get another professor. You have to work for a good grade. Expect to teach yourself. He does make quite a few mistakes on the board while working problems out on the board.
Great teacher! He is very willing to help you outside of class if you need help, and his class does a great job of preparing you for future math classes. Don't slack off, though!
I took his class for two days and had to transfer sections. He flies through lessons so fast I can't even write down notes. Math isn't my strongest subject and I knew if I stayed in his class I would fail. If you are like me and struggle with math STAY AWAY. He is very smart and a nice guy however. He just cannot teach.
If you can AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. He grades the homework and tests tougher than anybody should, he scribbles on the board for lectures, and does most the math in his head while "teaching". I've never had a tough time with math, it's my strongest subject, and I love the subject, but I grew to dread it because of this instructor.
Komagata is one of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. His homework is nothing like what he teaches in class, and his tests are even worse. His tests are usually 3 to 4 questions. I went to his office hours to ask a question and he was mad and annoyed I was there. Like I was being a nuisance. Never take his class.
Trig is a pretty hard subject in general, but Mr. Komagata made it much worse. He grades incredibly hard and goes way too fast in lecture. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking his class. I've never gotten below a B and I'm borderline failing his class. About half of the class dropped not even halfway through, so avoid his class if you can.
A lot of people are saying that he's a harsh grader but he grades fairly. He grades like any high quality professor would - and my teacher in high school graded much more meticulous then him. He goes through the material as fast as you let him. He doesn't degrade students & he explains things thoroughly if you ask questions. He's also very kind!
Professor Kogamata is great at math but doesn't teach it well. Half way through the course maybe 70% of the class had dropped out of the class. He can be a little intimidating which made several of us not want to visit his office hours and during his office hours he seems almost upset that you showed up. Wouldn't recommend especially for trig.
Don't take Trig with him! He would confuse himself during lecture and never explained anything clearly. There was weekly quizzes on WebAssign and he assigned homework out of the book usually once or twice a week. He was very unhelpful and I felt lost the entire class. If it wasn't for tutoring I would not have passed his class.
Do not take this professor. He cares more about your answer looking right that the fact that it is right... Horrible teacher and just all around horrible person.
Doesn't give extra credit, takes off points for minor things even if you get the answer right. sometimes he just wont grade something because he doesnt like the way it looks. get another professor.
Goes way too fast during class. Basically have to teach myself the lessons. Can't understand him. Makes many errors on the board.
Terrible. It doesn't matter if your answers are right because he will find something to take off points for. His lectures are all over the place and he confused himself constantly. Majority of the class was always at tutoring because his lectures are useless. He didn't post grades which makes it hard because he rarely handed back assignments.
Very tough teacher, I would recommend taking anybody else. Tough tests and he is also strict with the steps and notation of your work. I would get half credit even if i got the right answer
Wow, what an awful teacher. One of the worst at UNM. He blazes through the problems and tries to make you look stupid when you ask questions. Awful grader as he takes off for every minuscule thing.
He goes through his lectures way too fast. He doesn't give you a chance to actually comprehend what you are writing down. He will take points off of every little thing on his quizzes or exams. Be ready to struggle and be stressed out all semester if you take this guy.
worst!
I have never, ever had trouble with math - nor have I ever failed a class. But I failed this one! Avoid this dude at all costs. Mumbles a lot, doesn't explain what he is writing on the board, and is just generally not a good professor at all. Seriously. Stay away.
GET A NEW TEACHER. He takes off points of your test/quiz for almost anything. During the lecture, he will make you feel dumb when you ask questions. Your grade is based on mainly the tests which are VERY difficult even if you study. He is very rude when you come in during his office hours. You will MAYBE pass if this is the only class you have.
Somehow had no problem with engineering series Physics 1 but would've failed this had I not dropped. Doesn't explain concepts, actually made things more confusing at times. Trying to find out overall grade is as hard as anything as he doesn't want to tell you. Trig isn't actually hard until this class, retook it with another professor, easy A+.
If you put in the effort, you will do okay in his class. He is an understanding professor and he is a nice guy. It's a STEM class, so if you expect an easy A, you will be severely disappointed. Overall, he goes through the material at a good pace and it really wasn't as bad as people say.
He goes way to fast and is hard to understand. Takes points for almost anything. If you ask questions he makes you feel dumb and he doesn't explain things well.
Very nice reasonable dude, but this class is also a killer. I wouldn't say he makes the material easier or tries to even make sure you fully understand. This class is essentially self (and CAPS) taught, even if you never miss a class. Study hard for this class all year long or you will not pass. Prof. often stood in front of board while lecturing.
Absolutely awful. He told us to come to office hours if we were struggling, so I went, and he spent the time explaining it to me in a tone that told me he thought I was a complete idiot. He doesn't do well with the idea that not everyone is going to pick things up on their own.
An awful teacher. Takes off points for the smallest of things. Sneers and is arrogant towards students.
I took him for the summer term and I thought he was really awesome. He does go through the material at a fast pace but is very approachable and helpful. He does require you to do homework as part of your grade so it's not all test bases and he does have consistent quizzes. As long as you keep up with the work, you will do fine.
Likes the corner cases of math. Copies from book to board rather than teaching material. Does not show knowledge or interest of material will not explain or relate topics.
Never wanna take math again, he seems super uninterested and is a know-it-all. he has a mean streak, it seems. Professor, if you see this, make math easier for us non math majors, please.
I tried working with the professor to tell him I did not understand the material he was teaching and I went from an A student in math to failing his class
the class might be hard, but if you attend every class you will success. Homework is just some due per week so not bad. The grade is just based on what you did. Quizzes are basically at home.
Goes through material very fast and deviates from teaching how the textbook tells you to. He doesn't give any review for tests or final. Assigns hours of weekly homework both written and online. Has a good amount of pop quizzes as well as take-home quizzes. The class is definitely for people who can be self-sufficient in math.
This professor is absolutely horrible!!! Talks down to you and makes everything so so so much harder than it needs to be. I dropped and went with a much better professor because I couldnt put up with how this professor treats his students.
I usually enjoy math but with how he grades it makes math more tedious than it needs to be. He is very nit-picky about how we should format our homework and will mark points off for pretty much anything.
Komagata is a good teacher. Hes hard on you because he knows what you're capable of. Don't take his classes if you're not willing to work hard. We used Aleks so our assignments weren't graded, our grade came from final test at the end of the class. He will push you to be on top of your assignments, if you need help multiple tutors are available.
I took him my freshman year and I really enjoyed him, so I decided to take him again for my sophomore class. HORRIBLE IDEA. He is the worst grader ever, he is incapable of answering emails and does not help you at all. I always have at least a B+ and I got a C+ with him. Absolutely terrible.
This professor is one of the worst math teachers I have had the pleasure of dealing with. He depends on the students to follow his flowchart and meet his hours every week, despite being ahead on the topics. He doesn't respond to emails right away, yet expects the students to respond ASAP to his emails regarding attendance, homework, etc.
Komogata is a good professor. I would definitely take one of his classes again however, his teaching style may not be for everyone. Your grade in the class is dependent on how well you perform on the test. All class work is through Aleks and is not graded. However, if you study and review the material before the exam you will do just fine.
Did not help students just told us to do better, never taught a class just had us sit there. When it came time to take the midterm he was very slow to respond with questions, and then got mad when it was not done on 9 pm on the deadline because he did not respond to emails. During the final I asked for a retake which he completely ignored for a day
Professor Komagata is not a good teacher. He is very picky about grading and will not give credit for some of the smallest things. He grades really tough and if things are not done his way then do not expect to get credit. Would not recommend taking any of his classes.
Dr. Komataga is a decent instructor. It is all independent work, you have to learn everything on your own but for the most part the concepts are not difficult to grasp and if you need any help there are TA's to help. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss one day you will be dropped. He's strict but he means well.
I do not recommend taking this class. He is a tough grader, only wants his way. Very strict, but he teaches the material decently.
Does not teach... simply goes over advanced questions without giving a basis of how to solve them.
Even though I did all my work and attended classes, I was still dropped (1215Y) because I did Aleks online instead in person with no notice. (I completed 80% by this time) In person is mandatory, but it still feels like a waste of time. You just sit there on the computer doing random Aleks problems. He doesn't teach. Total waste of time and money.
worst professor I've ever taken. do not take this class.
do not take his class
He is a great professor, I answered all my questions and emails in a couple hours throughout the semester.
This instructor has no idea how to teach math, PLEASE if you want to do well, do not sign up for his class. People ask questions and he rarely knows how to answer them and he is demeaning when he does.
He teaches as if you already know the material and it's all just review. He pauses for a couple of seconds after each problem he goes over and if you don't understand something its critical you let him know. Unless you're a natural at algebra and are polished in that area, you won't keep up. He teaches as if we are all on the same speed as him.
He never supported me or my efforts to pass his class
Mr. Komagata is very rude and unhelpful. He judges you silently when you ask any questions. He is always looking for a way to critique or embarrass you. He was always in a bad mood, he mostly seemed like he didn't care to be there and just wanted to get class over with.
takes points off if you don't write "f(x)" on your test.
He was a horrible professor, he got mad when you asked a question in class. More than 70% of the time in class we had to correct him for his mistakes, then again he would get mad. He was a very lazy teacher, did not teach just read straight through the textbook. He personally told me it would be better for me to drop the class when I had an A
Gives partial credit but it does little to help when he goes so fast during lectures that you have no idea whats going on. He makes up his own questions and does NOT go by the book on how to solve them. I had to use Khan academy and even then I was so far behind and completely lost. The teacher is pretty friendly and chill though.
I found his class and explanations very straightforward, he's a very knowledgeable guy and goes through things at a quicker pace which I personally liked. I hadn't taken a math class in a few years and I got back into it because of his class.
Professor knows what he's talking about, however he goes extremely fast to the point where I couldn't keep up. This is the first class I have every dropped due to the amount of stress I had trying to complete the homework, do the quizzes, which, you never know when you get them, and the exams.
Dr. Komagata clearly knows what he is doing, but the classroom environment is harsh and inviting. He has strict anti-late work and anti-extra credit policies, so it would be wise to do your homework and study hard for the exams. He is a harsh grader, so meticulously check your work before you submit it. Self reliance/grit is needed for this course.
Professor Daishu seemed like a nice guy, but he would go way too fast for me to understand. In my college career I have never studied as much for a class as I did for this one. He definitely isn't a horrible professor, but you definitely have to put in time after class (up to 20 hours a week) if you want to pass this class.
Just don't take this class, you won't keep up with his pace and be able to understand the material at the same time.
Professor Komagata has a strict teaching style, but if you stay engaged and use resources like unstuck study, you can succeed. The class is challenging, but the TAs are helpful.
Hey, I took Applications of Calc 1. He does go fast in lectures. DO NOT FRET! I leaned heavily upon office hours. I'm talking at the same time every Tuesday for 16 weeks. I was there. Reach out to him, express concerns, and engage; he will match that. Also, go to CAPS for help with homework, don't buy a calculator, we never use them on exams.
Moved very fast in lectures and explains things terribly during class time. He emphasizes office hours to learn if you dont understand but if your schedule conflicts with office hours you're screwed. Tests are majority of the grade, fail those and you fail the class. Learned more from OrganicChemistryTutor on Youtube than Daishu in a semester.
Unfortunately this is the kind of math class where you have to learn everything on your own. He is a stickler for notation and a very harsh grader. As long as you spend a lot of time on the course material outside of class (+highly recommend office hours), you should be okay. Went into the final only having about half of my assignments graded...
Lectures unhelpful and non-interactive. Professor would complete practice problems on the board that neither me nor my colleagues could follow along with. Additionally, these problems were riddled with mistakes. Syllabus used strange "codes" for the dates causing much confusion. Exams and quizzes were very difficult, would not recommend.
Don't take this class if you are not fast on your feet when it comes to math. He talks fast. He is fine if you stop him to ask questions, but if ytou don't stop he will not stop. Fine for me but some of my peers struggled to keep up.
I really like Professor Komagata, he's nice and encouraging. But passing in this class is nearly impossible. Each test had very few questions, but the overall test was worth the majority of your grade, so get a few wrong and you're failing. I got over 97% on both HW and Quizzes but got an average of 70% on my tests, and failed the class.
Terrible! Terrible! Terrible!
Your exams are worth over half of your grade, he's hardly available outside of clas so if you're not confident in your math abilities you will get demolished.
It's important to show up. Idk who could pass this class if they didn't. If you have questions, ask. He knows what he's talking about & it helps to show him that you're putting in effort to get the material down. Exams are very important to pass, spend time studying the material and go to office hours. Komagata is there to help his students
This professor is very kind! However, he's extremely fast paced and doesn't expand on things much. You should expect about two quizzes and typically four-to-three pages of homework a week. Luckily, the quizzes and homework are pretty easy. The grades for these things will barely impact your overall grade. Attendance and exams are most impactful.
He moves through the content very fast. He knows what he is talking about but if you start to fall behind you HAVE to put in the work to catch up because you never will if you don't make an effort. He is always happy to help if you are struggling and he is a good teacher.
He was great to our class not sure why he's rated so low
DO NOT TAKE CLASS!!! No matter how good you do on the homework and quizzes all it takes is one bad exam score to bring you from an A to a C.
if you need to have every step of the math problem laid out for you he is the prof for you! literally goes student by student to make sure you understand the math. not sure why he is rated so low. only math professor i have had that actually cares about me passing and teaching me step by step.
One of the calmest professors, he moves through lectures a bit fast but he always made sure to go around and individually help students. As exam heavy the class is he still gives half credit for most wrong answers so as long as you write out each step you'll be fine. Retake the quizzes! Really sweet guy, if you talk to him and is very helpful.
