Smart guy. Will let you know it too. But a good teacher
total powertripper on the young. ANYONE can be skeptical, think about it!
Pretty good teacher, make sure you give him what he wants on tests
Bit of a wierdo, funny, pretty hard marker on tests, good lectures

Not Fair! For the score rating extremely hard for the test and assignment!
not a fair marker and not a very good teacher either
Great guy, honest, wacky. Anal, yes; unfair, no. For a prof, probably the best listener I've ever met. You'll learn a ton in this course if you know what you're getting into and are good at English. He doesn't babysit.
Dr. Beyerstein is the biggest joke for a teacher I've ever come across. He makes his unedited book, filled with typos by the way, the only book for his course, then proceeds to read the book to you every class. Extremely effective don't you think?
Found him to be good at presenting multiple sides and chose very intersting readings to get the concepts across with.

Roughly 75% of your mark will be based on 9 questions for which you cannot prepare. You're almost better off earning gpa by rolling dice.
a robot. harsh but fair. if your late on a deadline you WILL be docked. no tome for favours; only by your merit will you survive
he had too much coffee and diet coke!!!and marking is so not fair...crazy...u cannot prepare his exams by doing the exercises in the textbook...Don't take him!!!
he is the worst instructor that i ever had,his marking is so unfair, explanation is unclear, rush through the course and very inpatient,at the end of semester about 2/3 of the class dropped this course.......
Good luck if you are in his class. There are over 45 students on his first day of class, and there are only 7 left to take his final exam!
You can easily get a high grade if you do all the assignment and exercises in books.
This course is the hardest course I've ever taken. This teacher, being a super strict marker doesn't help matters much either. One small mistake in one long question will get you 1/2 if you're lucky. He IS willing to help you if you're lost though...
He is a pompous little man on a big power trip. He needs to learn what a verbal pause is and how effective it can be in teaching. And it wouldn't hurt if a Critical thinking teacher was reasonable sometimes. I was docked 10 points for being 2 minutes late
Everything you read about this teacher is true, he fails on every level. Impatient, arrogant, and lazy all apply. No handouts are provided to supplement lightening fast lectures...bottom line, this teacher is burnt out.
He is arrogant, he seems to enjoy taking marks off & I honestly believe that half the class could teach this class better than he could. Gets a marker to do all his marking and u can lose 10% of the whole test for forgettin a bracket or 2 on one question
I see a lot of people complaining here, but his office hours were rarely full. He was a n alright guy. A little inaccessible but that seems to be run-of-the-mill for philosophy professors. He was discussion oriented in the courses I took with him.
The course material itself is easy, but once you stick him into the picture, don't plan on getting a mark you deserve. He took 10 marks off my assignment becuz I typed it up on SEPARATE PAPER! Unreasonably hard, useless, and class is a waste of time.
He is a hard marker, and I would have loved to get some points I lost due to useless/worthless mistakes. However, I would not say that he is a bad teacher. He's tough for a good reason, and philosophy just isn't a slacker course. The stuff is taught well.
Dayle is very nice & very approachable. You will learn if you put in the effort. The lectures can be boring--it's a dry subject. He marks fairly. The text: less wordiness & less typos would be nice but it's actually okay and it's cheap(ish).
My first phil. course- and I decided to get my degree in it. Dale is helpful, doesnt work you too hard but expects class participation- share your ideas in discussions, you will do well. It's philosohy, his job is to provoke ideas, and he does it well.
I would say this, Dale is a good teacher if he likes you, but don't take a course he doesn't like teaching - IE Logic, he's bored with it, and has little time for people he consideres 'not up to the task' of philsophy...just hope your not one of them!
Very unorganized; lectures are hard to follow.
If you 'get' him he is a very interesting teacher. Understandable that he rubs some students the wrong way. If you get past that, he is really a very smart, helpful, informative teacher. Get over yourself and let him teach you and you'll learn something.
You have to love philosophy and appreciate critical thinking to be able to appreciate Dale. He is a genius, which is why he is eccentric and seemingly unorganized. His enthusiasm and devotion to logic and critical thinking inspired me to take more philos
Excellent teacher. Very interesting classes. Just make sure you go to all of the classes!!!

Horrible teacher for first year logic. Quite good for 2nd year Ethics, though his marking seems extremely arbitrary, (especially for someone who's so concerned with causal relationships).
I didn't think he was a good teacher.. I could have learnt from the text.. I could have taught the course better then him... BUT I still did very well Pay attention to all the little stuff because he is very crafty, he will try and trick you on the final
If you like organization then this is not your class. It seems like he just got out of bed during his lectures and some of the justifications for his answers seem way the hell out there. If you're looking for an easy elective, it's not with him.
he's horrible, unhelpful, boring, and he looks like a bum off the street. you'd be better off learning from the text than showing up to his class. if you value your GPA, don't take his course!
His teaching is right out of the text book, and pretty dull. But far worse, his exams are WAY harder than the practice material, and he marks them WAY harder than that homework. AVOID THIS GUY AT ALL COSTS!!!
I learned a lot from this guy...the logic class was interesting kinda funny. i enjoyed it. I can't believe i did.
Messes up constantly;very rude
Logic class. TOTALLY NO LOGIC. He is so mean. He looks like a homeless. He class is boring and MT and FINALS are DAMN HARD. DUN TAKE THIS CLASS.
For those with comments on Dale's style choices; it is very clear to the educated amongst us that you are suffering from severe insecurity where a person's worth is gaged by what he wears? Are you serious? How did you get into college?
Yuck!
Most of the time he doesn't know what he is doing.
The guy is bright, a good thinker, and funny. No, he is not a runway model, nor is he a good way to boost your GPA, but his logic is good and his stuttering explanations are actually quite lucid. Take his class if you want to learn logic. Don't if not.
If you fogot to write your section No. on your assignment or midterm, you would lose 5 marks.
This Prof is useless. We were gives assignments we could work on together (basically allowed to copy) and he gave completely diff mks to diff ppl. When approached, he said it was just too bad!! Unfair prof. VERY difficult exams
Right out of the text, don't need to show up in class. If you understand the text, then you'll ace this course. He offers a lot of help on your paper if you bother to go find him during his office hours
from what i can remember(1.5yrs ago),he's actually not THAT bad.he's smart, attendance not important, interesting, learning that i can use4life.nonetheless,DO NOT TAKE for a decent-good grade!content good but HORRIBLE MARKING;I got -10 marks cuz I typed up my answers on separate paper&attached!!OH GOD!
As someone else pointed out.. if you want to learn logic, this is a great course. The teacher's attitude is what we should expect in university,If you are too insecure or pathetic to accept a teacher's tough marking style, don't take this course and get ready for a bunch of drops in your future.
Dale is a geat philosophy teacher, and really helped me enjoy going to school.
interesting lectures
he is useless!!! A terreble teacher and unfair! Most of the students in our class were failing because he was so unclear...if the whole class isnt doing well i thik it says something about the teacher and how he teaches...hes very unfair
he sux~! all he does is stutter! he is unclear, i bet he wouldn't kno any answers to the questions if he didn't have his "answer book"! if u want a BAD grade then take hiM!
1 word: TERRIBLE! was warned by sister, brother who took him 15 yrs ago, and others from here, took as last choice, the worst prof ive ever had. he studders 3-5 times before saying anything, students correct his answers consistently, couldn't imagine a worse prof, you will regret taking this course!!
fun class, interesting teacher. One in a million.

Dale is a very good teacher. He is honest and seems to try to practice what he preaches. Teaches from the book, so if you actually read it and show up to class for discussion, and participate, you should get a good mark. He's a hard marker, so don't be arrogant and leave anything out
Beyerstein is a true philosopher. You can see that the man sees and breaths philosophy in every single aspect of life. This quality makes him an even better professor. (The way he stutters is no problem) You still understand him and he makes sense, but you will have to concentrate in his class.

He has a stuttering impediment that evokes sympathy the first few times you hear it. After a week, I swear I started stuttering myself! Unoriginal, boring, a fanatic stickler for time and can be very condescending. Who knew philosophy could be SO boring?
Took Logic with Dale, later marked for him. Expect to be hit hard for sloppy work or faking it. Put in the time early on, you will ace it. Mastering this material gives you a HUGE advantage later in any discipline (especially essay writing & math proofs). It's no harder than an intro algebra course, but you have to do the work. Whiners steer clear.
dale is an awesome teacher. I haven;t had an instructor like him since. he respects students who try, and is really helpful. one of the best philosophy instructors at langara
Test and HW is esay , but the way he marks our test and hw is BS!! A question is worth for 15 marks, but he will take 5 marks off from each mistake. Is he a good teacher? just average. Is he a good marker? absolutely not. To be honest, this course is easy. If you are a careless person, don't take his course. The chance to fail is high
Dale is one of the best Philosophy Prof's I have ever had. No he doesn't seem to value appearance or surface level things. He is a great philosopher and I would recommend him as a teacher
Extremely passionate philosophy instructor. No structure. Class is just sitting around talking. I personally like structure and some note taking to keep thoughts organized.
This guy is horrible! If you make more than one mistake on a truth table you'll get a zero outta 15!! Trying to argue ur mark: useless. His arguments don't make sense...At first, I thought he was ****....but that's how he always is! I like logic, but he's gotta go! Everyone warned me about it, but I had to convince myself...bad, bad, bad!!
DO NOT EVER TAKE A COURSE FROM THIS MAN!!!! Langara's full of good teachers; he is not one of them. His marking practices were very random. Several people who made the same errors got radically different marks. His teaching was straight out of the text, and very uninspired. I got the grade I deserved, but not everyone did.
I took an ethics course from him and it was a really great experience! There were times where he stuttered quite a bit, but after a while, you can get used to it; he generally is vocally clear despite that fact. I liked the layout of his class - it was discussion group and basically allowed me to practice my public speaking skills :)! Great choice!
Inappropriate language in lecture.
just TERRIBLE. his tests have nothing to do with the homework assignments that he hands out. He doesn't really help when you ask him a question...he seems to give you a different answer for the question that you ask. (note to all you future students..DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!)
arrogant attitude and rigid teaching style. no room for discussion and does not allow a friendly challenge or a question out of curiousity about the material. he makes mistakes constantly. no clarity when teaching material and becomes frustrated when students don't understand immediately. a fine ethics prof but terrible at logic. avoid avoid avoid.
Ok yes! he has no logic. Why would you go over material that has already been tested AND you are behind in teaching the material to your class? Beats me. I finger whoever says he is good at his job. NEVER AGAIN!
for Logic, he's a great prof. He's super helpful and if you pay attention and do the excercises, you can get a really good mark. This class is a GPA booster. No papers, which is a nice break. It's like doing sudoku for an hour everyday - it's puzzles....
good prof overall but test are hard in this class!!!!!!!!!!
Strange prof. Often cancels classes or comes in late. He is unclear about what exams are going to be on. Is not approachable after class. Likes to talk about sex and his coffee cup. Quite boring and there is not much point to going to his classes.
Not only is there little focus on the subject matter, where material was constantly disregarded, there is no effort by Beyerstein to supply additional handouts or offer extra classes for his absences. A lazy teacher who doesn't comment on quizes. How the guy is still teaching shocks me. Read the other comments and avoid at all costs...!!!
I dont know about his other classes but his logic class was really interesting. in the whole semester he cancelled 3times(not too bad)He explains pretty well..though his tests are pretty tough.. usually not enough time to finish all the work. but u get30% of ur mark from HW assignment which are easy
Dale is the worst teacher! Doesn't teach, I only attended 2 classes and only went for the exams! Dale can't teach, I didn't take notes or anything, I just read the txt. Marking is just a joke! I would seriously avoid taking any class with him! Extremely boring!!! Everybody in my class left halfway through his lecturing, this happend all semester!
The guy Cancels classes without letting the school know so you are stuck waiting in class for him to show up. He is ridiculously arrogant, and often makes fun of students who take a while to answer questions. I have no idea how this guy still has a job.
If you screw up a little error in your truth table during an example, 5/10. And his exams are long which means, you don't have enough time to check over your test. Arrogant, rude, makes fun of students. How does guy becomes a teacher is beyond me. Probably got picked on during his school years so now, his trying to make it hard for all students.
he swears too much in class.. he makes more mistakes than the students, but he gives us a big fat zero when we make small mistakes..
I have to agree with everyone else on this, he is one of the worst profs I've ever had
The logic class is basically clockwork. If you have paid attention, worked out the problems for yourself, and kept up with the pace of the class, you will do fine. I don't know why you guys are complaining about the trivial little mistakes that profs sometime make in class. He always corrects them, and makes sure he is clear. Ethics was great too.
An easy class if you keep up with the pace. He is actually quite approachable when you need help. Not for the whiners who dont do the work and expect a good grade.

You definitely have to read the text. If you do, it's not hard to pass the exams. Hard marker on essays. Some lectures are very boring, but overall the class is only difficult if you don't understand the reading, or take the time too, and don't write a thoughtful essay.
Dale is a great teacher. Philosophy is hard to wrap your head around. Don't blame him if you don't get it. Very approachable. Will go over your whole exam with you if you need him to. Don't take this class just for the hell of it though. Must keep up with the text!
his tests are too hard
Dale is fantastic! He is so much clearer than the book and LOVES logic so you can talk to him as much as you want after class. The subject is REALLY hard however. My class ended with about 5 people left in it so don't take Logic unless you know what you're getting into, but Dale is great at teaching it, and he loves creative examples of problems
Dr. B is awesome. Get this straight: he cares about the truth and the meaning of things, and wants you to see how important these are and work hard at it. 100% genuine, inspiring philosopher. Do the readings, try to contribute to discussions, and you'll find him a patient, thoughtful teacher willing to match your efforts. Not all gems are obvious.
Dale is an extremely intelligent man,who LOVES philosophy. He leads classroom discussions very well - letting everybody have their say, without adding an unfair amount of his own biases. The material is moderately difficult, but at the same time intuitive. The class discussions and exams revolve completely around the readings, so keeping up is a must
I think every one is being really tough on Dale. The course is definatly hard, the marking is even worse, and he's cancelled 7 classes at the moment. BUT He is clear, tries hard for you to understand the material, gives handouts, and is passionate. I would definatly take another course with him, would I take Logic again though? Definatly NOT!
Dale is nice, but not clear. He'll answer a question incorrectly half the time and has to be called out on it. The other half he's confusing himself at the board and making Logic harder than it has to be. Test are unreasonable and aimed at weeding out the kids who have taken logic previously and are after an A. Unreasonable for 1st yr. course.
Dale is a very nice man. He will try to make analogies to help you understand concepts. However, in all honesty, attendance really is not mandatory as he takes nearly all his discussion straight from the textbook. Most people will find his lectures boring, but I found them bearable to say the least.
Great
Dale is a nice professor. If you need any help outside the class, he will be there to help you. His two mid-terms are fairly OK but final is a little bit tough. If you go to class regularly and do all their assignment at the back of the book. You will easily be able to get an A.
Willing to answer and help when you ask him. But the classes are fairly boring as most material comes directly from the text. Fairly easy if you do all the practice and familiarize yourself with it.
he is a funny man, and he's a good logician, though sometimes he is so confused that he couldn't even find the problems we are working on
Terrible teacher. You have to be a suck up for him to help. Participation is required otherwise he won't help you, at least that's what it seems. Tests, exams are fairly easy; all from the book. He is NOT HELPFUL. UNCLEAR
Seriously, worst teacher Ive had. His essays are 30 percent of you mark, 2 essays, total, 60 %
Be prepared to be marked toughly with this teacher. His emphasizes on his essays which takes up 60% of overall average could either really benefit you or make your life a living hell. Attendance aren't mandatory but listening in class will definitely help with his tests.
Ridiculous. Teaches straight from the text and will not teach without it. Condescending and insults students, does not provide a reading list or syllabus, and expects students to learn entire chapters on the spot. His tests are straight from the text, but don't expect any help from him. My advice, study the text yourself in the library during class
I'm pretty engaged in phil, so this course was easy. People expect to get help if they skip class/don't participate at all? Even if you don't participate, I got a pretty good vibe from Dale. He'd help you if you asked. Relies heavily on text. Just read, and you'll do fine. See him for essay help, and you'll do fine on that too!
I didn't do so well in his class but he is a good prof. Logic was super difficult but he goes in order with the textbook so it is easy to follow, and he goes through all the textbook exercises in class, which helps a lot. If you need help, he is willing to help. His tests were really difficult, but the assignments help boost your mark. Good guy !
dale is super nice and an engaging prof. the workload of this class is minimal but dale expects that you fully understand the 15 pg chapters he assigns to be read. overall i enjoyed the class. the debates were quite interesting as well
Attendance is not mandatory. He stutters a lot and will put you on the spot while doing exercises in class. The exams have nothing to do with the assignments or the work done in class, study the text book! I studied based on the assignment, A on the assignment, F on the exam. Dale is not a bad guy, the class is manageable, but poorly structured.
Only reason you would fail this course is if you're abysmally stupid or skip lectures often. Makes the class discussion based, and actively tries to get everyone to participate.
Dale truly has a passion for logic. Although, he often loses his place and forgets to bring things to class. Don't try to argue your mark because he will definitely win! Do his assignments in groups! Spread the work out because doing the proofs by yourself could take hours (or days!). Content got jumbled towards end of sem. Challenging class.
I like Dale a lot. I realize his style isn't for everyone, but as a philosophy major I really felt he was open to discussion, quite insightful, and a very helpful instructor. He has a keen interest in discussing various points of view, and is generally a very down to earth, easy going guy. Would recommend.
Dale is cool. He can seem unapproachable, but if you actually do approach him he's always happy to discuss. Words of advice: Learn from the textbook, and learn to do the proofs fast. If you have trouble attend class and ask him for help. Try to gain a deeper understanding, he likes to throw curveballs on exams that are testing for just that.
Dale has an amazing mind. His aptitude for philosophy and picking apart every side of an argument is second to none! I think it's an enjoyable class for anybody, but obviously people with a preestablished penchant for philosophy will enjoy it most and be more likely to succeed. You will get good marks if you pay attention, care, and are intelligent
Amazing introduction to Philosophy! Couldn't ask for a better professor.
Dale is an amazing instructor that would help you develop your critical thinking skills. He is very respectful about different POVs which allow for a more open and exciting discussions. He is the best prof to learn from especially if you have not taken any Phil course before. Read the material before hand and participate in class.
