A very caring, helpful teacher who loves his subject alot. Has copius amounts of pratice material, is willing to stay a long time in a one on one session to help with any problems you may have. Tests are challenging, but notes cover them completely.
He is a really good TEACHER. Eager to help if you are eager to learn. His lectures are easy to follow. Tests are based on practise tests so its all straight fwd. Best professor for chemistry I have ever had.
Very dedicated teacher. His love for his profession and subject is evident in his interactions with student and lecture. Patient with students willing to learn. Test are challenging and straight from lectures.
Talks condenscendly to foreign students, talks to you like you're a fool. His tests are now multiply choice, but are very tricky. Try to copy all of his tests because the final are composed of previous midterms.

Two words for him: excellent and caring!
Terrible teacher. You're better off taking another teacher. He's hard and mean. Don't believe what others have wrote, it might be him wring good stuff about himself. Avoid this guy at all cost!

Terrible teacher! Don't take him. Hard tests and long boring lectures.
really nice and helpful
As a teacher, I think he is fine. Actually, I think he was too easy and that ended up being a bad thing when I started to study for the MCAT. Also, the guy was late a bunch of times in class and can have a slight attitude problem. However, he's not bad
First impressions are misleading! He is always late to class, talks to you like you're an idiot. His tests are not reflective of his lecture material at all. He made o-chem harder than it should have been.
Doesn't seem to know much. His note was exactly copy from the book. And is sometime moody
Always late to class and has an attitude problem. Doesn't know what he's doing and his notes are striaght from the book. What's the point of going to class? I didn't learn anything. Terrible teacher!
he is a fair teacher
Very difficult. His tests are on material not even covered in lecture! Not a good professor to take for organic.
VERY EASY CLASS. HE IS THE BEST ONE THAT TEACHES IT. DAVISON IS NO GOOD. I TOOK 12A AND I GOT A C. NOW I HAVE AN A WITH CARRANZA FOR 12B.
Dedicated, effective, and respectful professor.
One of the worse teachers that I have ever had. He's late to class and doesn't really teach. He reads straight from the book. His tests are challenging and has stuff that are not covered in class. Boring lectures, long labs, terrible teacher. Don't take him!
He is a very nice teacher, very helpfull, but his exams are very hard.... I enjoyed his class a lot.
He is a very helpfull teacher, but his tests are a very hard. He is late to class about 5~10 min, but it is ok to me. I enjoyed his class and lab. As you known, chemistry is not easy, so if you will study hard, you will get a'B' or an'A'. His final is everything about12A and 12B.
Don't take this in the summer if you could help it--too fast. Overall, the dude is very mature but not as funny as Davison, always late, gives hard tests but strangely, you'd study less b/c his tests are all multiple choices and you'd figure you can always guess the answer. You can get depressed during the term but in the end you'll defintely pas
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Hard tests, late to class, bad attitude. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!
easy A if you study
This teacher does not do his job he is lazy. He just grade the answers through scantron, and does not care for all the work that has been done on the tests you do not get any partial credit for your effort. Can you beleive that in a Chemistry class?
Time Killer! Before taking his class, make sure you have enough time to struggle with learning chem by yourself and waiting outside his office during the office hours. You have no idea if you did right or not in the assignment, because you never see or hear them again since the day you turned in.
I don't know why people are whining about this guy, because he wasn't that bad. If you were unclear about something, you could ask him in class and he would go over it. The students who did poorly in the class were the ones who never asked questions.
During class, he lectures from the book, which is boring... he sometimes cracks jokes to ease the mood, but overall, this guy is difficult. He told the class the average in the class must be a 70%. WAT THE HELL! His tests are SO hard and he doesnt curve. HOWEVER, i do believe he gives all his students Bs. I was supposed to get a C or D but got a B
People complain but you honestly wont get an easier ochem class than this- all tests MC! He will def help you if YOU ask for it and he is great about working around your schedule if you have to miss class. Yea he's not the most interesting enthusiastic teacher but if you are looking for an A or B without putting in that much time at all hes ur man
Best professor that I have ever known.
All multiple choices Sucks! Take him if you do have the special sense of picking the right answer!
He is a little wierd, but overall, he is a good O-chem teacher. The tests are all multiple choice which can be good or bad depending how you like it. The tests are hard, but if you do the homework and study it can be an easy A. i would recommend him to anyone.
I studied all the material but failed his test.
Doing all the hw does not ensure an "A." Often, there is a disconnect between what is asked on the hw vs. what is asked on the exam. Basically, do not skip over things you think are just "minor details," b/c these things will still show up on the exam. I agree with one of the other raters, do a great job on your lab notebook b/c it's worth 2 exams.
He was a great chem 1A teacher. i think he teaches very well and if you listen to his lectures and read the book and your notes, you can get an A. Even though his tests might be hard but if you get perfect scores on your labs, you can do well in his class. Overall i think he is a nice, fair teacher.
Easy B or A.Lab:no prelab,no postlab report;submit lab notebookat final=200pts.FINAL=EXACT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS OF 3 EXAMS;WORTH TWICE THE POINT OF EXAM:EASY RECOVERY POINTS.Team with friends:memorize questions+answers= For Final.Claimed to have many reusable versions of exams. M/C: If 2 answers are closely the same:1 of them is answer. No H.Work.
I think he is the most nice professor I ever met. You will realize he is a very paitent & care person, if you stop by his office and talk to him. He is strict on lab rules such as: put chairs along the desk, so we do have safe lab experiences. I have to say his tests are not easy, but you're at college. Be active & study hard!
He is an honorable professor. He knows so much about chemistry and about his lectures that will simply leave you amazed. So if you consider yourself a decent student then take him. He will NEVER stress you, he is there to teach you if you are willing to learn. Take his challenges and do your best, he is a very fair professor.
= Organic 2. I got B. He is caring, friendly, full of knowledge professor. You will learn a lot in his lecture, tape his lecture so you can prepare for Lecture Final. (Lab Final is 50% like Lab Final of 12A, plus "Yeast Lab": equation+failure...) Love him. He is going to school for Doctor;he knows what you are going through. Highly recommended!
Carranza's teaching method is inefficient as most students do not learn a lot about O-Chem. There were some materials taught in class that were not on tests. He recycled questions from the 3 exams for the final. He grades labs easily but u must get a passing ****ulative percentage for the 3 exams plus final exam in order to receive a passing grade.
Go ahead and take this class. Ochem is a hard subject and you are expected to do a lot of work with any teacher. There is only one other ochem teacher and I havent taken him. Carranza is an honest, nice guy. He's passionate about this subject & it shows in his teaching. Yes 3 tests are multiple choice and the cum. final is also. Be prepared to work
If you have to take O-chem, this is the professor to go with. The tests are based on the main topics in lecture and the problems he assigns, so it's a good idea to tape the lectures and rewrite the notes. EASY FINAL.
Tape the lectures and rewrite the notes. Really fair teacher, come to his office hours and ask for help, actually helped a lot.
His tests are multiple choice so their easy. His labs are easy. HOWEVER, his lecture is extremely simplified. He does this for your benefit, but it works against you because the test isn't simplified. Even though he says the text should be supplimental to his lect., i disagree, its the other way around.
Starts the semester off very slow, then towards the end of the semester rushes and due to insufficient time canceled remaining lab sessions. On the other hand, the material is tough as it is and he makes an excellent effort to teach o-chem. He is very accessible if needed and offers a lot of help. Should reverse order of lab and lecture though.
This is definitely the guy to take for ochem. Prof. C. is knowlegable and enthusiastic about his subject. Lectures are very well organized, and provide a good guide to add to the text and tell you what will be on the exams. Prof. C. is very helpful in lab, he stresses learning without stressing you out. If anyone can make this class fun, its him
Easy A class.
I thought it'd be an easy A coming from the teaching styles of Davison and Saddleback's notorious prof. Tests are not very clear. Talks a lot. Lectures are boring. Final is ACS exam and curved. Always comes late. IVC's lab is lame and things always mess up. He gives us full credit neways. I heard he doesn't have time to read our lab notebooks.
TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU LIKE CHEM AND IF YOU HATE IT, THEN YOU HAVE TO TAKE HIM.
Easy B, tough A. But hey, this is o.chem, that is to be expected. He is kind of helpful at office hours, but could be better. On the plus side, the lab portion is an easy A as long as you attend each lab and fill out the lab book. Most ppl will get A's for the lab which helps to balance out your grade in class.
Nice teacher. Really want to push all the materials he knows to you and make sure you get it all. But he wants you to spend all the time for studying his lecture. Have a lot of works, exam and quizzes a week before final which you can't spend any time to another subject. Exams are multiple choices but really hard and tricky. You need to study every sentence on textbook and his notes so details to pass the exams.
O. Chem is hard, and I took the first part years ago, but the teacher is very passionate about impacting knowledge to his students. He wants his students to suceed and he goes out of his way to help students do well in his class and not just pass, but actually acquire new knowledge.
Nice guy. This class is straight forward. Your grade will be determined by the time invested in homework, reading the book, and looking over notes. Test questions are similar to homework assigned. 3 test, final, lab notebook, lab quiz, done. Keys to success: stay on top of reading, do homework problems multiple times, don't be lazy!
Great teacher.:)
the exams are so easy and they are from text book. he is very nice.
nice guy and exams are from text book
Best chem professor at IVC!
Easiest A for ochem
Easiest class I have ever taken, he helps you to pass his exams; they are solely based off of lecture. If he assigns it but doesn't cover it in lecture, it will not be on the exam. He skips over details of the mechanisms that are important and brushes it off by saying its not necessary...which it isn't...unless you really need to understand ochem
Great Prof. Exam are like ACS; they are very helpful for students preparing for DAT, MCAT, OAT. If you want to prepare for Medical school, this is the class you want to take.
Guy is a joke, Bias professor, i Dont even know why this guy teaches at a college level . He has ZERO interest in his course. IF youre a girl your in luck. He likes woman, He's very deceptive, be careful to what you say around him. He will take you straight to the dean. Class is a joke, If you want to learn chemistry and excel in it,do not take him
3 exams & a cumulative final exam; good teacher; tests you on what he teaches; books and materials for class are over $500 (textbook, lab textbook, solutions manual, modeling kit etc)
Knows the material and uses it to teach well. Tries to be as helpful as possible but lacking when it comes to lab. Exams are difficult and based on lecture. Terrible time management and will often shove exams toward the end of the semester. However, slow rate of instructions permits time for you too read get ahead. Grade range altered in you favor.
He has an interesting tone when he gives lecture. He takes attendance in the lab serious. his exams are multiple choice and kinda hard but not hard for those who studied the book well. I think he has an attitude when he talks to you in person. He acts like he doesn't care if you discuss a problem with him. He is a fair grader though.
He's an awful professor. The man is unprofessional, unclear, and inconsistent. He allows his personal life to dictate the tone he takes in class. He lectures like he's teaching 1st graders yet gives exams like we've been studying chem for years. Average on 2nd midterm was 45%, yet he doesn't curve. Avoid him if you want to learn Chem.
Avoid at all costs if you can. He is very unprofessional and has a very bad and rude attitude if you talk to him in person. Also you are on your own because he shows up to class 30 minutes late every time and doesn't teach the material... just mumbles some stuff.
3 exams and a cumulative final exam; >50% of the questions come from mastering chemistry; lab is not extremely stressful; there is adequate time to complete labs unlike most other classes; prof. is very clear & easy to understand; the knowledge required for exams is more detail than that of lecture (this is the norm for most universities);read book
I would suggest if he is your only option avoid at all cost and i mean it. I;m planning on taking the MCAT soon but with the way he thought i have to learn the class again on my own.
WOW i never thought a class could be this bad..... its the worst class i've had so far at IVC he can't teach and now i have to take 12B with him because i didn't learn anything in 12A with him. You want my advice....DON'T TAKE HIM
First off, it should be stated that O Chem is a tough class in general. Carranza is a decent professor who just doesn't know how to plan out lectures very well. That being said, if you use the book and the ACS study guide, it's very possible to get an A in his class. His tests are fair, but you need to know the material well to do well.
I really enjoyed this class. His lectures are simplified so you understand the basics and his exams are very fair for ochem. If you understand how to do the problems in the book/mastering chem no reason for you not to pass with an A. he's the best!
He is the one Organic Chemistry Professor that doesn't make your life hell. but at the same time you wont learn as much as you would in the other classes. He takes quizzes each week and there is no tests till you take the final. He is a nice guy. He just explains his daily schedule out loud and that takes alot of class time. I like him. Hes cute :)
He over explains the easy stuff but blows over everything else. Lab is very frustrating because he shows up 15 minutes late and makes us do presentations which just waste time so you have to rush. Rude and self righteous and does not prepare you for the ACS or any other exam you will need Ochem. Don't take him if you care to learn Ochem.
There are 3 exams and 1 final. Within the last month of school he's giving us 2 exams and the final. He falls behind in schedule every year. He lectures incredibly slow. His exam questions have nothing to do with what he taught. Premed a don't take him. I understand he has personal issues going on but still, we are all here for an education.
Is he the best teacher? probably not. But Man he does make your life much much easier. Only weekly quizzes , which is better and less stressful. The class does require one group presentation that you will find at the end pumping your grade up. Labs are easy, quizzes are fair. To succeed :1- pay attention 2- take good notes. he is nice too!take him
Carranza if described in one word is lazy. He comes late to class all the time and then proceeds to waste another 20 minutes to go get things and get himself ready to lecture. This class is tough with quizzes every week on sections that you may have covered two weeks ago but for some reason appear in the quiz this week. Overall lesson dont take
he is really nice professor explains everything by far he is the best ochem professor
the best instructor in Irvine valley college ,and i ensure that my MCAT grade will be high after all this great information that i got from his class thanks for God that i chose to be with him in this course i love him
Hes a good professor Ochem isn't easy but he makes it enjoyable. Taking again.
He's a nice person, really nice, but doesn't have the best way for teaching Ochem. You really have to put so much more work on it on your own. But he is a nice guy
Exams are hard BUT if you study and do ALL the problems he suggests then you can get an A. Don't take OCHEM if you are planning on overloading yourself with 19 units. This class requires a lot of attention because it's a lot of material. Carranza is a great professor that is under appreciated because of lazy students.
He is ok for 12A as the exams for 12A are not that bad. However, for 12B he is frustrating. A crazy amount of material is crammed in the last few weeks and on top of that, we had to study for the ACS final. I also felt he was more rude in 12B. Lab is easy and he definetely enjoys the material but he cant teach very well. Study hard for an A
Very funny and amazing lectures! Although he does tend to be late, he manages to go over all the content by time. He genuinely cares about his students and makes sure to double explain something if it's still unclear. Office hours are very open. Ochem is tough, but if you're disciplined and do the hw & relook the notes, you will get an A.
He is always late, which means we get way behind. He also tends to be slow in lectures, and he even wasted 30 min talking about pies. Not to mention that he holds us up to unreasonable standards (namely, telling us to work as if this was our only class, which of course it wasn't). He is also frequently late to or absent from office hours.
His exams are all multiple choice and I believe they're not that hard. He is always late but I have no problem with it. For the lab, as long as you show up and do the work, you'll be fine.
He is always late to class, may or may not show up to his office hours, is not helpful during the lab, and does not lecture well at all. but to be fair some people understand him. different professors work for different people. I would not take his class again or recommend his class though.
Personally not my cup of tea. As others have said, he is always late to class. It's important that you do the hw in order to practice (not graded but you need the practice). First couple of tests are super hard, last two are so-so. Make sure you understand ch 6 well as it is vital for 2nd half of class. Read the textbook for extra info.
Most laid back teacher I have had for the sciences. Late to class but so was I. Really broke down the material to a set of simple criterea. O chem will be hard no matter the proff.
Don't expect to learn Ochem by being in his lecture. He does not teach well but his grading system is awesome.
HE was an excellent professor may he rest in peace taught me the best before he passed love ya carranza.
rest in peace. he was a kind professor. very caring really wish could have taken more.
