Mr. Cates is the best teacher I have ever had. He printed notes for us and came up with "stupid little" nmenomics and ideas to help us remember the concepts. I made an A in his class without once cracking the textbook..just by reviewing my notes now and then. He gave us credit for attendance, but he wouldn't drop students for being absent.
Cates was very helpful outside of class. His desire for the students to understand was obvious! He provided many different learning materials in the form of notes. I studied hard and ended up making a B in the class.
I enjoyed his class so much. He had tons of learning material but he always said they were "extra" because he made his tests according to what we covered in class. I used the book to help clarify and get visuals. I made an A and it wasn't that hard. Had 5 tests plus a final.
Mr. Cates is extremely enthusiastic about bio and makes learning fun. He draws a lot on the board for you visual learners. He is always willing to help you, or explain more. He gives study guides and is very clear on what will be on the test. Go to class, take notes and an A is very achievable! I would 100% recommend him!
Mr. Cates is a great professor! He draws a lot on the board and he also gives students something called a graffiti for most of the chapters. The graffiti pretty much explains everything that is on the test. His test questions are a bit challenging but as long as you take the time to study you can make an A. Lots of bonus points too! I pulled an A++
Most enthusiastic teacher for 2404 & 2401. Draws lots of pictures on the board, uses a lot of word tricks to help you remember, and practically does skit routines to help you remember the "characters" in your body. In love with his subject, wants you to succeed, very understanding teacher for students needing disabilities accommodations.
Most enthusiastic teacher for 2404 & 2401. Draws lots of pictures on the board, uses a lot of word tricks to help you remember, and practically does skit routines to help you remember the "characters" in your body. Very helpful!! I liked his class a lot. Just read your book, and study is guided readings. Awesome teacher!!
Amazing professor! Really knows how to explain stuff to where you can understand it. Relates info to everyday stuff so that it is easier for us to understand & remember! You HAVE to study the pictures & notes he draws up for you. He is hilarious & SO energetic! Taking him again for 2402!
Not only is Cates super funny and interactive, but he really knows how to explain things so that they are easy for anyone to understand. He uses lots of visuals and is very energetic so he always keeps your "One percent!" He gives reviews for every test, and if you study those and pay attention in class, you're sure to make an A! Super fun class!
Cates is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He is energetic and really does a great job holding your attention during class. He only tests over what he teaches in class. He gives lots of handouts and what he calls "graffiti" pages. I basically made study notes from the graffiti pages and used those to study for his test.
I took this a&p class thinking I would make an A. Also knowing that it wasn't going to be easy. Mr. Cates is a wonderful teacher and he truly cares to teach the students. The only reason the class was hard for me is because he uses "graffiti" notes that don't make much sense.... So if you're a visual learner, take his class. He's wonderful.
I took his BIOL2404 and also received an A. He made everything really easy to understand with notes that he provided that related everything to everyday life.
I love his class! He makes things so clear and gives you real life examples that make things stick. He is by far one of the best teachers I've had at TJC.
Mr.Cates notes are awesome for study guides. Hope to take him again next semester for BIOL 2401. If you are taking his course online, then you want this to be your professor.
Great professor. He only test over the material in class and I found it a lot easier than my intro A&P class. He offers bonus points which helped me get A's on all my exams! He's the best professor I have ever had! And I really did learn from him
This professor plays to much when he needs to be focused we had a 4 chapter test coming up and only covered 1 of those chapters and then he tested over stuff that wasnt even talked about
Awesome teacher He makes the class so fun I tell people about him that he is a great teacher.
Very laid back teacher. He offers study notes which help tremendously when taking his tests. I made a B only due to my lack of studying.
I love Mr. Cates. I consider him to be the best teacher I've ever had at TJC. I love the way he teaches. He is so enthusiastic. I made an A in his class!
Mr. Cates is the best of the best. I won't take A&P II without him. He is so educated, witty, open minded, entertaining and I could go on and on about him. He's on my top five favorite professors list, he's awesome.
His teaching style is great! He makes it a lot easier to understand the material. He's the best professor I've had and I would highly recommend him!
His "graffiti" drawings weren't much help unless you actually understood the material, and what each was. He would say that the tests are straight forward, but they're not really. Get ready for difficult tests that have 6 answer multiple choice questions as well as matching that has 4 questions and 10 answers, all that can be used more than once.
If you go to class everyday and take specific notes to match his "graffiti" notes then you will be fine. Best professor I have ever had hands down. Breaks down specific stuff that he lectures about in a form that everyone can understand.
If you are a visual learner definitely take him! I wrote down every little thing. He breaks down the book into graffati drawings by trying to pick out the most important and from there you grab as much information as you can because he also writes his own tests. His test are mostly matching which can get tricky, a few multiple choice, and bonus!
Dale Cates is a wonderful A&P instructor. He is very straightforward about the information which will appear on the tests and he gives opportunities to receive bonus points from attendance. He is incredibly intelligent and I loved listening to his lectures for both A&P 1 and 2. Not to mention he is hilarious and super animated!
RECORD HIS LECTURES. He is an amazing professor but I'd recommend for you to record his lectures while you study his notes. Although his tests are difficult, he gives you opportunities to earn bonus points!
If you have to take A&P, this is the guy to take!! If you study his notes, which aren't long, then there is no reason you can't make an A. I thought his test were relatively easy. He is funny, and engaging. I was never bored in his class.
He is a really good and kind professor but he didn't teach in a way that was easy for me to learn. He has opportunities for you to get extra credit and gives you "graffiti" and other study notes. Great professor just not for me!
Great teacher, really breaks things down for you. He does not go by the textbook so it is very important to be in class and take good notes. He gives you pages full of drawings to use as references, but it only helps if you jot down what he says with it. I did not like the drawings very much, they didn't give you actual information.
He talked, A LOT, and instead of using standard PowerPoints he drew pictures, it wouldn't have been as bad if they weren't so disorganized. Most of his test were things he goes over in lecture, but he talks so much in class its easy to zone out, I wish he had audios that we could listen to of his lectures that would help.
Awesome professor. I loved his class and I have never learned so much in a single class until Cates. Tests are pretty difficult. Majority of the tests are matching a word to something relevant to it, instead of the normal word to definition matching. You learn a lot but be prepared to really buckle down and study for the tests, and NEVER miss class
Seriously the best professor I've had and probably ever will have! He makes the whole class crack up at least once a day and makes the content relatable to the average Joe. I'm taking him again for BIO 2402 and I planned my whole class schedule around his availability (that's how much I loved his class). HIGHLY Recommend, he makes A&P a blast.
Dr. Cates is so relatable. He makes it easy to remember difficult concepts. He hands out copies of his own hand drawn notes to study.
My first impression of Professor Cates was of a positive atmosphere and a jolly character. But as I dig into the semester I begin to realize his teaching style and my learning curve to not mix. The communication outside the class is minimal regarding emails. He does not use powerpoints. His notes are unorganized. He jokes too much in class.
Gives notes in three formats to accommodate different learning styles. Very animated in lectures and gives analogies and silly side notes to help the information stick. If you only attend the lectures and don't study, don't expect to get an A. Grading is very fair that if you put forth effort, you can get an A. Took him for two semesters.
He's a really great prof I would recommend him again. I see a lot of feedback about his graffiti, but this is just an extra tool he gives students to learn and if it doesn't work, you literally have about five other study assist-type hand outs. I recommend printing out all graffiti before class and highlighting what he talks about.
AMAZING! He really is amazing but also the hardest teacher I have ever taken. I wouldn't recommend him if you can't take really good notes and/or if you can't translate little drawings into something with meaning. But always feel free to ask him questions he will answer even if he has to write it down and get back to you. Very little extra credit!
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING He made a very intense subject feel like a breezy. Very funny and enlightening while educational. Would recommend to everyone!
Mr. Cates is an awesome professor. He really knows his material &knows how to teach it. Mr. Cates is an EXTREMELY visual professor & really relies on "graffiti" and pictures to teach his lessons. His tests are very straightforward and easy IF YOU STUDY Also, you NEED to attend class if you want to pass. He gives a lot of test info in lectures
He is a genius! I can not say one bad thing about him as a person or even as a professor, but the material that is provided for us to study needs to be deciphered. If you can not learn what every abbreviation means and if you can not study at least an hour and half a day it is unlikely you will succeed in his class.
Amazing professor!! Keeps class intresting. Must attend class.
Cate's is a fast paced teacher, however he does an excellent job of highlighting the important information. It's important to attend classes because that is where you find out what will be on your exams. He uses a lot of analogies and drawings to make it easier to understand harder concepts. Overall, I highly recommend taking his class, it's fun!
Cates is a hilarious teacher and his graffiti is GENIUS!! Sometimes it's hard to read but nonetheless it helps, he gives many ways to take in the information if the graffiti doesn't work for you he has written notes, powerpoints, etc. His test are rather hard, lots of multiple choice but,if you study you should do pretty decent.
He is such an amazing professor, from the minute you walk in his lectures get your attention. Usually, its hard for me to pay attention but with him, it is so easy and he had good ways for his students to remember what he talks about. Take him 10 out of 10.
If you can study via doodles then this man is perfect! He teaches off his notes which are things from the book. Visual learning is mostly how he teaches, drawing things out. His tests can be a bit confusing, but you kind of get the hang of it. He really doesnt give extra credit the most is 2 points, I believe.
Not a bad teacher, but he teaches in a style that is not great for me. All of his notes are "graffiti" instead of words. He gives 5 tests instead of the traditional 4, but his tests aren't over set chapters. I learn better with clear outlines, and he was hard to keep up with due to him being so "scattered"
VERY HELPFUL TO VISUAL LEARNERS! All of his lectures are drawn out into incredible detail. Really helped me learn. His tests are straightforward from the study guide material. Definitely recommend for anyone taking A&P!
Prof Cates is truly the nicest prof Ive ever had. His lectures are very entertaining and he works hard to make them fun. However, he goes so fast and only says things once. Its impossible to take notes in there and his tests are very very difficult.
Took professor Cates for A&P 2401 and 2402. He is great!!! He does use graffiti notes but provides other study tools for those that are not visual learners. He is a fast talker, recommend you record his lectures for when youre studying. Gives extra credit . He keeps lectures interesting, loved his class.
AMAZING TEACHER! His lectures are enjoyable and funny. He does amazing in making hard information easy to retain. There's 5 test and he extra credit available. Very helpful and kind! Also had him for BIOL 2401
Prof Cates is an amazing guy. He makes his lectures enjoyable and gives you many options to study for. Try's to hint as much as he can what will be on the tests without just saying what it is. 4 test plus a final exam. Willing to help as much as you need, go to his office hours and he helps so much!! Wish I could have taken him for A&P1 also!!
I took Cates for 2401 and it was fine, but 2402 was a struggle no lie. His tests drive me insane and his doodles barely help when it comes to the test nor do his practice questions. Just beware if you are going to take him for 2402
Professor Cates was an overall great teacher for my first semester at TJC. In the beginning, I had a hard time learning how to study his notes for the tests. I realized his notes were very helpful and basically everything on the tests. I recorded all of his lectures and that also helped a bunch.
Professor Cates is awesome. I wish I couldve taken him for A&P 1. Word of advice, record every lecture. Go home and listen to those recordings, take notes, study it. You will pass every test. The tests are composed of ONLY things he covered during lecture. Hes very funny and easy to learn from. Just put in the study time and youll pass!
If you go to class & take good notes youll make a A. He gives extra credit & lets you look over old exams to show you what you need to study. He always gives you reviews & goes off the notes and drawing he gives. Very good teacher. You definitely need to study or you wont pass.
Cates is a great teacher and always wants to help. But ALWAYS go check your test grade during his office hours. He messed up TWO of my test and gave me 20 points less than what I earned. Also did it on the final grades and gave me an entire letter grade less than I deserved. I would have never known unless I went and checked my final with him.
Super funny teacher, but it's still difficult. His tests are between 80-90 questions. They are over what's covered in class; hence, why you need to be there. The book isn't really used at all, just in lab. He's an awesome way of getting through A&P. I had him at TVCC just over 5 years ago and again this year at TJC. So similar to then. 'A' at mid
I LOVED MR CATES, I UNDERSTOOD HOW TO TAKE HIS TEST BECAUSE HE DID A REVIEW RIGHT BEFORE THE TEST THE FOLLOWING CLASS. HIS PICTURES HELPED ME UNDERSTAND HOW THINGS WORK. I FELT LIKE I COULD SAVE A LIFE JUST BY LECTURE ITSELF!!!!!
Awesome professor! I could understand the material a lot better by using his graffiti. He also offers a lot of extra credit points. Im definitely taking him next semester for 2402
I enjoyed his class he is funny and explains a difficult subject very well. His test were kinda hard. He gives extra credit. A&P is a class you have to work for it
The tests are all multiple choice, with typically 6 questions in a column with 20 answers and the answers could be used more than once which means you would have a 1 in 20 chance of getting each one right every time. He also gives out a lot of different study material so it was hard to decide what to study. I wouldnt take if limited on study time.
I LOVE professor Cates. I barely passed 2401 my first time around (with another professor) and took 2402 with Cates and easily made an A in his class. Retook 2401 with him and easily made an A in this one too. He's such a funny guy and truly loves teaching. Study hard, put the work in and the grade will show it!
One of the best profs I've ever had. He's tough, but he's fun. He gives you all his notes, and recently put up his basic lectures on YouTube! If you know how to study and you don't expect to be handed anything, this is a fantastic class. He cares so much about you and your education. He's inspirational. He's encouraging. He's just an awesome dude.
Dale Cates made the class fun he is absolutely hilarious and very smart. His tests are all multiple choice but consist of alot of matching but gives very good reviewing material well before the test. Your final grade will replace your lowest test grade and really gives you every opportunity to pass the class. Highly recommended. Ill take him again.
He is fun and entertaining in lecture, however, he will test over something said once or not covered. If it is mentioned once on a piece of paper but not talked about, you still have to know it. Hard class but still found a way to pass! If you need help I have practice tests based off of his practice questions and reviews! Email me if interested!
I took Dale Cates for BIOL2401 & 2402. Hes so funny and sweet. But this distracts you from the fact that he gives entirely too much work. I understand this subject is lengthy and can be difficult, but the information he gives is OVERWHELMING! In the modules on canvas he has graded practice questions thats contain over 300 questions, ;((
Dale Cates has an amazing personality and he is really funny when lecturing! His class is severely difficult and unless you have really great memory do not take him. Im sure I passed but the material he gives you is impossible to study. Over 400 questions versus a 80 to 100 question test that is tricky. The textbook is online with the class.
He advises you to study whats called General Practice Questions and he makes it sound so simple and easy. Then you realize youre stuck studying300+ Questions and then the test is just a landfill of matching. Its covid school and girls where quarantined for being exposed and he wouldnt even let them test...
Awesome professor! Made class very enjoyable even though my class was early in the morning. Was very animated and went into full detail and gave really good and understandable examples in class. Provided a lot of study material and made learning Anatomy and Physiology super enjoyable!
His lectures are great and he does make them interesting! He is difficult because he gives you like 400 general practice questions to study for an 80 question test. He also has his lecture notes all crazy with doodles. I just couldnt retain anything the way he teaches. I took him for AP one and got an A but AP two I had to drop. Hes a hit or miss.
He is very funny and a nice person BUT His test are horrible, he goes on and on about his doodles (notes which did not help) I feel like he purposely tries to trick you on his test the way the format is.... hated, hated, hated his test
Mr. Cates is a great professor, but it is a hard workload. The guided practice questions are so hard to retain unless you have a photographic memory, and if you arent a visual learner then the graffiti wont help you. A majority of everything talked about in lecture is important and will probably be on the test, so definitely make it to every one
Mr. Cates is a very caring and respectable professor who knows his A&P. His tests can be quite difficult, especially if you don't study. His study materials are pretty long but if you take the time to study them all the way through, you'll do well. Definitely recommend, but be prepared to study.
Professor Cates is a wonderful teacher! The exam content is mainly found in the general practice questions. Unless you're good at memorization, the GPQ's alone will be difficult to understand, so definitely go to every lecture. A&P is a difficult subject, but Professor Cates wants everyone to succeed and provides ample resources.
AMAZING professor!! Have to put in effort to pass, but mostly memorization. Gives question pages that if memorized make tests SUPER easy. If you don't understand, he is good about having several different ways to explain one concept. Lectures are very entertaining, and he is a helpful guy who truly want his students to succeed. Highly recommend!
I had this professor online, and his class was straightforward. As long as you did the work, you had no problems. He also makes notes for his students, which is a big plus for me personally. I have had many professors who do not do that. He made charts or diagrams that helped explain topics in detail.
An absolutely amazing professor. Has fun with his lectures. Makes learning easy
I LOVED Mr Cates and took him for A&P I&II. He gives engaging lectures and has prepared notes in 3 formats and lectures that way as well to accommodate various learning styles. Seeing the material in multiple versions really helped with studying & grasping the concepts. I kept his notes to defer back to in nursing school which helped many times.
He has pages of doodles which he calls his graffiti. He will go over these during the lecture. He also gives you practice questions and these would be good if he didn't give out 500 practice questions. There is no way you could possibly study 500 practice questions for a 100 question test. It is so easy to get distracted in his class.
Cates is a really good professor as long as you study the general practice questions youll score well on the tests. He doesnt do trick questions either its pretty straight forward. If you fail the class its likely you just didnt put in the work. His lectures are detailed well and he explains great.
This was, hands down, my favorite teacher I’ve ever had. He taught the material in a way I understood and made it so easy to learn. I highly recommend him.
I loved Professor Cates during A&P1, I ended the class with an A and had no issues whatsoever. The general practice questions were a great study tool, but now that I have him for A&P2, this scenario is very different. The general practice questions are nothing like the exams most times, even if you've studied for what feels like ages.
personal opinion:After taking his A&P2 the "General Practice Questions" he gives us were nothing like the test. And if you were to go off the practice questions it's a lot of paper to print or files to save/upload. He is an amazing professor very funny and brings props to lecture. He does speak fast...very fast. Notaking is crutional w/studying ofc
His general practice questions are nothing like the exams. He can go off topic during lecture. He is a good man, but doesn't care much for your grade because you should already "understand" the material. He switches his questions up very often so you can get the broad idea of the study.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Sure, he gives you "general practice questions" but there are roughly 200 questions per chapter to study for his exams, exams covering 3-4 chapters. If you do not know every question by heart you will fail his tests. Please trust me take any other teacher but Cates. DON'T DO IT!!!
I took cates based on his RMP reviews and that was certainly a mistake. While everyone knows AP2 is a difficult class, he makes it impossible to take his class and do well unless you drop everything to only study for this class. The only students I know who do well are who do not have to work, are not parents, or are only taking a few classes!
Mandatory class for nursing program. This class is nearly impossible if u take other classes or work full time. Mostly draws doodles instead of powerpoints. Test reviews are at least 150 questions and the tests are even worse. Teacher is a cool guy, his teaching is just off.
Professor Cates is funny and outgoing but he tends to get off topic quite a bit during lecture. He uses "graffiti" for lecture notes. Which to me made no sense because it is just a bunch of scribbled notes and pictures all mashed together. His test are always 100 questions. His study guides are 300+ questions. So be ready to STUDY.
He is a great professor his questions for the exam comes straight from his general practice questions. He has youtube videos that also help if you don't go to class. You can still pass without going but he does give hints to bonus questions and specific questions that may be on the exam. He is super caring, helpful, and have amazing lectures.
Mr. Cates is very lecture heavy and often gets off topic A LOT! He lectures over his "graffiti" which is just a bunch of information crammed up. It was not helpful at all. Study guides are always 300+ questions. And half the time material on the test was not even from the study guides.
Good professor, but teaches through drawings. Has many outside resources that will help with learning what will be on the tests. General Practice Questions and his YouTube videos will be your best friend,
He was hilarious. He uses many analogies, stories, and metaphors to explain human anatomy and physiology which made it easy to understand. His study materials are easy to access and exams are based on his general practice questions; just study those and you will do well. I would recommend him to any first time college students.
