Very easygoing and funny professor. SIT IN FRONT, though, otherwise you won't hear or see well.
One of the best professors i have had in college. I wish he taught all of my classes. Can really explain well. Answers your questions very well and also gives good notes during class. For the test, just study the concepts he gives you in the review and you should do fine. Should be given an award for teaching very few professors at uic can do that
very funny guy. explains everything and notes are worth taking. quizzes are easy and exams are straight forward, not to hard. he is a great prof. take him if u want a A or B in calculus III
Great prefessor, very clear
Great teacher with a big sense of humor. He really knows the subject material and his tests and quizzes are challenging but fair. Awesome class, highly recommended.
Great teacher with a big sense of humor. He really knows the subject material and his tests and quizzes are challenging but fair. Awesome class, highly recommended.
Awesome teacher and an all-around great guy. Dr. Embers is funny and knowledgeable, and he succeeds at making his lectures engaging and interesting.
Great professor, very clear and helpful. Take his class if you want an A, but its not an easy A. You have to work hard.
Embers is the best!
He is a great professor! His notes and lectures are very helpful for the homework and exams! He gives you examples of homework problems which helps you when doing homework. Also, he is a fair grader, very funny! I highly recommend him!
One of the best math professors I've had at UIC. He keeps an otherwise dull class very interesting with references to average wingspan of wombats etc. The exams are very straight forward but they are by no means easy. You will need to work for an A(although not too much).
Extremely proffessor! As long as you go a few classes before the exam he will tell you what is exactly on the exam. Also, you get to bring 1 sheet of paper with w/e you want to write on it to the exams and 2 sheets of paper for the final. HW is online and can be re-taken until you get 100% on them. Quizzes are exactly like HW.
Embers is the man. Go to class, take the quizes, and do the homework and you're set. Everything he says is significant really is: it'll be on the exam. I hateeedd stats before his class. He made me like it. I highlyy recommend.
a very smart guy, extremely nice and humble. I loved coming to his class.
What a great Professor, one of the best at UIC. He is extremely helpful and clear. Gives examples along with all definitions. No bust work in his class, he will tell you what topics to study for the exams. AND on top of all that he is soooooooooo nice and entertaining.
Very passionate about what he teaches, extremely helpful and nice during office hours. Hes also one of the most sarcastic people I ever met in my life which is great, overall amazing professor.
Embers was awesome and hilarious! Def makes the class more interesting and he's so understanding. I had to miss an exam due to personal issues, and he allowed me to make it up after discussing it with him! So nice and fair! Cheers to Embers! Definitely recommended!
Very informative lectures; explains things clearly and great use of examples. Hilarious in an off-handed way. Understanding about schedule conflicts, and is very fair, nice, and helpful. Gives clear guidance on what to study for the exams.
Professor Embers is one of the nicest professors you will me at UIC.He is really helpful during office hours and very patient. Make sure you review your homework and notes because that is what makes up most of the quizzes and exams. I highly recommend him for stats!
Reviews made this class sound easy, but it has changed a lot. Test averages for our first 2 tests were low 70's and low 60's. The class isn't too bad, but if you want to do well (B/A), you need to study. Don't buy the book, just practice StatLab and his notes. Embers is a great guy. He is really funny and very kind. His examples are the best!
Most adorable professor at UIC? Possibly. He explained conditional probability with "prettiness of flowers" as the example. He's always well prepared and gives very clear explanations. You learn a lot but think you're not doing much because it all makes perfect sense when he explains it. Love this guy...and I'm not normally a math person.
Extremely helpful, goes out of wya to help you when struggling. He's very clear in his lectures and gives great reviews before exams. Two exams and one final. Be sure to keep up with the readings and hw and you'll do well. Material isn't hard if you read.
Prof. Dale is one of the best math professors at UIC. He's so helpful, but his exams are not easy at all. you need to study hard to get an A in this class. There are about 6 quizzes all over the semester and Three exams, First , second and Final. The grades was based on points, the final worth 200 points and the two exams are 100 each.
Very easy class. You don't need the book because it's online once you get the access code, but I think class notes suffice. Study the notes, do practice problems. DO homework BEFORE quizzes because quizzes usually take 3 or 4 problems directly from the hw. Test avgs aroung 70 but as long as you study and understand, it should be okay.
Definitely recommend this professor! He explains the material really well and keeps lecture interesting. For example, before the final he had a picture of a kitten on the overhead "to calm us down". You do need to go to class though because he doesn't do lecture capture. Homework is an easy 100% too. If you study notes, its an easy A!
Very helpful during office hours. He responses fast to emails. The guy's great! Definitely would recommend.
He was very helpful. I never really liked stats but he made it seem so easy. I wish I had him for all my math classes at UIC.
Professor Embers clearly explained the subject. He provided a sufficient number of examples with each topic. However, the tests were difficult, quizzes not so much. If you look for some past exams and quizzes, they will be helpful in understanding the types of questions that will be asked of you. The book was horrible, but it's needed for hw.
Amazing professor and person. He sincerely cares about his students and is a very considerate guy. Probably one of the sweetest and funniest man you'll ever meet! You have to be proactive for his class and if you don't do too well in his class, you have no one to blame except yourself. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!
this class with him was okay. quizes were held in weekly, dominantly directly from homework. homework work was alot but if you got homework done thoroughly, quizes were easy. tests were based on mostly from quizes, homeworks, and some of his lecture. overall, i liked the class.
Great teacher that makes some quirky side comments to himself. Likes to answer questions and explains concepts pretty well with examples using ponies or game of thrones. I highly recommend taking him for 101. We had 3 chances for the weekly quizzes and homework on mystatlab. Tests weren't too bad since he used previous examples often.
He's a great professor. I would advise to take him. #Stat101
Outstanding.
Boss. Simply put, he is awesome. Funny guy and very friendly if you ever need help with a concept. Unlimited chances on homework and 3 tries on the weekly quizzes. The lowest 2 are dropped from the homework and quizzes. Exams were very fair. Not sure if he curves if anyone is looking for that. Overall, take him, you won't regret it!
Awesome guy and awesome lectures! Make sure to attend all his lectures, he gives good examples as well. Never opened the text book.
He was a great stats professor. Extremely clear lecturer, always came to class prepared, and exams were very straightforward and fair.
Excellent professor. His lectures are enough to understand the concepts, never really needed the book. Pretty straightforward and fair. Fair amount of homework that is helpful in keeping track of your concept. Gave 3 point extra credit to those who showed up to his lecture. Dont think, just take him!!
Embers is the bomb dot com
Professor Embers is very clear on his examples and explains step by step how to derive equations and also how to apply them. He is the most phenomenal professor I've had so far. I am no math expert, but he made calculus easy to understand. He is pretty humorous and lectures like he's having any old conversation. Great man, greater professor!
Professor Embers made calculus my favorite class of my first semester of college. His lectures are phenomenal and really helped me to deeply understand the material. Oh Timmy. Take his class.
Professor Embers made Calculus so much more bearable. He was very easy to understand and helped me actually understand math! I would definitely take him again, and I recommend him to anyone that is taking math! Great guy!
Dale is hilarious. His lectures are great and his humor keeps it interesting. Attendance is "mandatory". It's run through learning catalytic and the question most of the time is just to click "yes" for attendance. If you log in outside of class and pay attention to your phone, you can still get the attendance point.
Stat 475 is a difficult class, but I'm thankful that Prof Embers is the one that teaches it. The textbook is only used for homework problems. He teaches everything way better than the book will.
Dr. Embers is an amazing lecturer! He is very funny and makes calculus very fun and interesting. He is very helpful during office hours. He explains things very thoroughly. Sometimes examples are just like the homework but sometimes they aren't, so it's up to you to go to his office hours or review the topic more. Would take him again!
Really funny and knows his stuff. Try to do well on the midterms because our final exam was hard and I ended up losing my A.
Best Math Teacher hands down!!! HE is awesome! explains very well, and is nice to talk to outside of class! I wish I could have him for 165
Hes super funny gives great examples, the homework is fairly easy, only 3 tests. they are not anything new you get alot of practice. Good proffesor
One of the most amazing math professors at UIC, way better than the one I had for Math 110
Stats is a hard subject, but Professor Embers teaches it very well. Lectures are clear and simple, but don't fall behind because they build up. Attendance is crucial. Exams are not tricky, but it's easy to trip up so pay close attention to what he says in class. He may seem a bit cheeky and unapproachable but he is definitely a great professor.
The course is fairly easy, and the professor does an excellent job teaching the material. If you happen to miss a class, his whole lecture can be seen on blackboard because he records all his lectures.
Professor Dale is good. He gives good example but at times can get really confusing . His lectures are confusing at times. I would not choose him again . But that it just my opinion. Other people have other ways of understanding things. Dale seems like he puts all his efforts for the well being of his students but his lectures are just not for me.
Don't take him if you're in CS. Just take IE with Quintin instead.
Pretty good, 30% of the class gets an A. Lectures are clear, but discussion is more confusing than helpful.
People here say that he is a good professor and gives clear explanations. I could not disagree more. He does lots of examples, but he is terrible at explaining what hes doing. He also goes so ridiculously fast and mumbles the entire time that he is teaching. Could not stand him as a professor. Do yourself a favor and avoid him entirely
Great class. Dont believe the people saying its hard because it really isnt, they just dont want to take the time to study. And this class doesnt even require a lot of studying, if you attend lectures everything should come easy. Exams were also pretty easy. Literally if you do your homework and at least study a little bit you should get a A.
First of all I want to say that this professor is OKAY. He is an amazing person and has amazing example but can get confusing at times. He does not do any extra credit and will NOT curve your grade. You fail, then you fail and he won't change anything. However, he does make it clear that he has office hours and who ever needs help needs to look4 it
Here's the basic rundown about Dale, he's a weird guy who loves math. He's kinda geeky which makes the class a bit cringy, but it's bearable by the end. His homework and tests are basically from his powerpoints, so studying isn't bad if you can memorize it all. The final is harder though, and that's how I lost my A. You need to study to get that A.
AMAZING
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He will not curve and he is really confusing. n ot a good professor.
Great professor. Funny and constantly encourages students to ask questions. Fair grader. Class expectations were very clear.
Hes nice and tries to help his students understand but sometimes just rambles which can confuse students at least he confused me a lot. I personally hate anything with math. Dont underestimate the course its easy at first but does get more difficult. We have quizzes and hw every week and drops the 3 lowest quizzes and 3 lowest homework scores.
Very unapproachable and was unable to provide me a good experience in his class. I did not understand his way of teaching, he forces you to write pages of notes for the whole lecture and most of the time, he is incomprehensible. The class is seemingly easy but gets excruciatingly difficult. He will not round up. Only take him if you have patience.
Dr. Embers is a good choice for taking STAT 101. He's funny, and he manages to make the material understandable and mostly relevant for the humanities majors who are required to take the course. The exams are quite fair and the grading criteria in general (drop lowest 3 quizzes, lowest 3 homeworks) are pretty generous. Would recommend.
The first time you meet him you can tell he's a total math nut! But that's a compliment! He is super intelligent in his field, and a genius in my opinion. ASK QUESTIONS in lecture, people complain because they dont ask questions!. PLEASE if you are having a hard time, go to his office hours, he is great for 1 on 1 teaching. and MAKE SURE you study!
Don't take him if math is not your thing. He's passionate about statistic but is really hard to understand him cause the way he talks. Lecture notes heavy, never stop taking notes. The homework and quiz are rough so are the exams. Is one of the classes that you just have to teach yourself
He's somewhat unapproachable; can be distracting. Hw is time-consuming. Good study guides. His hw and quizzes are harder than his exams. Read, practice, and memorize formulas for them. Hard final. Lectures can be boring but he cracks funny jokes. Easy and small excel projects. Gives some extra credit. Will round you up if you're in between grades.
He's an amazing professor. Just come to class , pay attention. the exams are easier than the quiz
Probably the best class I've taken. The Sapling homework has infinite attempts for full credit and all the content taught in class follows the book, so it's a breeze to look back again for help. The class gets kinda dull as problems get complex, but study a little and actually try the Sapling, you'll do fine. I wish more of my profs were like him.
Mr. Embers is very considerate and has a good sense of humor. His teaching style is a good example for other teachers to emulate! Clear class expectations, unlimited homework attempts and a note-heavy lecture really helped me to understand and actually learn statistics. The key to passing his class is to show up and be present
I'm not that good at math but Embers taught Stats very well. His jokes and weird examples contributed to my learning and I remembered a lot. I didn't have a hard time completing homework or doing quizzes. Even if I was having a hard time, he emphasized being accessible for help as well as some TAs. Very awesome professor!
He always tries to simplify his explanations by using real-life examples. The lectures are pretty dull, but he tries to be funny here and there. If you miss any lectures, there's always the lecture captures that are available online. The three lowest quizzes and homework (with unlimited attempts) are dropped so it's very chill.
Lecture is pretty dull but clear. Honestly kind of a weird dude but hes pretty chill. Exams are super easy-homework is harder than exams. Gives an equation sheet with literal explanations of what they are on exams and final.
This professor goes out of his way to help students during class and outside of class. He always attempts to put his students first and has great lectures that cover the material for this class in simple terms. The exams are based off the material and if you study at least a day beforehand, getting an A is easy. Weekly quizzes are also very easy.
Very good professor, always able to help through email even if you can't make it to office hours. Notes are precise and homework/projects are similar to notes. Final project is assigned group. There are pop quizzes (not scary). Amazing guy
This class was not difficult in terms of concepts. The quizzes were VERY straight forward. There was a lot of homework but some had unlimited tries, making it easier. Professor gives clear lectures on everything you need to know. This class is very applicable for all futures so enjoy it!
Embers designs courses very well. The coding lectures have a clear goal and the homework and projects are aligned extremely well. He stops throughout the lecture for questions. The grading criteria of the course is very clear. He made learning R enjoyable. He's also a very fast grader and a nice person. Excellent professor.
Completely does not understand the meaning of empathy and shares none with his students. In a time where people are going through tough times with this pandemic he showed zero care for what his students were going through. I felt belittled by him at times and felt like he was being too hard on me. I would never take a class with this guy again.
His lectures are easy to understand and the sapling homework provides unlimited attempts. The quizzes are easy and straight to the point.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dale for this course. I also had him for STAT382 a few semesters ago, and in both cases, he taught the material very well and his exams stuck to what he taught us in class. Lectures can be a bit dry, but still quite good. I took 475 to prep for Exam FM and passed it thanks to Dale. He's very knowledgeable and a great resource
The lecture videos were good and informative. Keep track of the due dates for assignments.
Professor Embers is by far the best professor I have had at UIC so far (second year). He is really lenient and understanding, and makes the course easy. There's 3 pieces of homework a week, but they're really easy, and a few exams that are doable if you do the homework and pay attention to lecture. He is happy to help students and he's funny.
This guy is great! Never have I felt so reassured on topics I was confused on after going to his office hours, where he provides thorough help in a way that's easy to understand. His lectures are well formatted and he has a slight sense of humor which makes them more bearable to attend.
He gives me a weird-awk vibe but is a nice teacher. He won't be the teacher you have a connection w though. He writes fast ngl but lectures are recorded. Tests cover a lot of material, there's only too but the second one has the hardest concepts to grasp. Literally copy what he writes in your notes. It's best to have a ti84 but you can manage w/o.
Easiest class I have taken at UIC. The lectures go perfectly with the homework and exams. The first half of the class is things you should've learned in 7th grade and the rest will take a little more effort to understand. Professor is super straightforward and helpful outside of class. He uses fun examples and always answers questions. Easy A.
The professor has attendance as extra credit, and all his notes are very useful for homework and projects. We have 2 projects and 2 exams, and then the final. He does write very quickly but still posts the scanned lecture notes.
Embers is fantastic at explaining concepts or topics in an easily understandable way. He also comes across as a very nice and caring guy. I took him for STAT382 which did not require attendance so most students (including myself) did not attend lecture. It wasn't because of the prof, it just felt like a class that could easily be done remotely
attendance is optional but definitely helps. He is super fun and his examples are hilarious. Overall a great class (except for discussion sessions with TAs), highly recommend.
One of my fave teachers at UIC so far. Lectures aren't mandatory, but you will want to go because his examples are so funny.
Very challenging course, but prof explains concepts really well. You better take this class with him, since he is the best!
I wasn't a big fan of Prof Embers because I felt like I wasn't learning, just sort of repeating various formulas he showed. This class is the epitome of busy work since we are graded on a lot of things. However, there is room to make mistakes and the take home unit exams were very easy. Set some time aside and look through posted lecture notes.
He is just a really great lecturer, fun guy and great person outside of the class. His lecture note is very easy to understand if you understand statistics. Doable exams if you studied.
I got an A because he knows how to teach. The only thing I didn't like was that you had to take a 2 hour discussion section with stat 101 that was useless, but that is out of his control. He is great. You'll have no problem learning and getting an A.
Really good professor for STAT 382 would highly recommend. Very good lecturer and solid lecture notes.
I took the asynchronous section, overall this class was pretty simple but lots of reading, I would rather prefer lectures
Prof Embers was awesome! He knows how to teach, so I had no problem understanding any of the material. The lectures can get boring sometimes, so I recommend that you sit closer to the front so you can focus better. He is super funny, PLEASE LAUGH AT HIS JOKES. Tests are also straightforward & you get 3 drops on the HW. Almost impossible to fail.
Honestly, I have no complaints. All his expectations are straightforward. Participation isn't mandatory, but if you come to class enough, you'll get extra credit on the exams. Up till the first exam, the material is stuff I learned in middle school. The rest of it is more difficult, but if you take notes and do the homework, you'll be fine.
Terrible. His method of lecturing involves printing out stacks of paper and drawing circles, arrows. Even though the class is programming heavy, he rarely if ever runs the code. Class is very uncollaborative even on worksheets and he did nothing to help. Extremely unsympathetic to students struggling even if you go to office hours everyday.
This class has great resources - the prof's lectures are clear, and the unlimited-attempt homework on Sapling is super helpful. unstuck ai was a game-changer for review and practice. Overall, a straightforward course with an approachable professor.
He answers questions thoroughly. His lectures may be boring, but that is due to the content and not the professor himself. His grading is fair, and he assigns a normal amount of homework with normal difficulty.
Extremely good and very knowledgable professor who doesn't mind answering your questions. If you're lucky enough to have him, you can do well on the exams by just keeping up with the lectures.
He was really nice but a bit awkward. His lectures weren't bad but it was just kind of hard to focus. All the lecture notes were on online. The exams will be really hard if you don't study but he puts a good curve on them and the attendance gives you 5% extra credit on the exam
Genuinely the best stats professor ever I enjoyed his lectures so much. he's such a nice caring guy super flexible and really wants to help if you ask. Attendance is mandatory but he drops 8 of them. a lot of homework but it's really not that hard as long as you keep up you'll be fine
He's a good professor. The class and material are boring, but he's easy-going and considerate. He actually cares about the material too and teaches excitedly every day. The quizzes are based off homework so just make sure you know when they are, they're easy to study for.
Sometimes he'll stare you down a bit and crack jokes, but nothing wild. I honestly didn't notice it much. He doesn't pick on anyone, he's pretty chill and helpful when you need it. Low-key, if you just do the discussion sheets, you'll be fine.
take stat outside of uic
Great professor, decently difficult class.
