horrible teacher, doesn't have any method to help students understand. he creates his own difficult tests, mainly from his own scattered lectures-barely uses the book. the midterm and final practically determine your grade. i highly recomend finding a different prof to take astronomy- especially if you want to enjoy and pass the class.
written/essay for mid & final with about 6 different hmwk assignments & chances for EC, all of which are based off lecture. if u don't like to attend class, i suggest not taking him. if u don't understand something, he's always there for office hours & it helps a lot, especially w/ hmwk. no book for lab (astro 2), so great money saver!!!
Smart man. Horrible teacher. He is unable to put ideas in words that you can understand. The most fruturating class I have ever taken. I no longer want anything to do with astronomy or science because of him. I have no idea what I learned because I did not understand the material. AND THERE IS NO BOOK!!
Really nice teacher. If you do the homework assignments you should be fine. The tests come from homework. You learn some really fun stuff in this class.
I had Professor Fields for the Astronomy Lab. Very nice, willing to answer questions thoroughly, no textbook required for the lab class. Labs are fairly easy, done with partners, and utilizes little math with makes it that much more enjoyable. I liked him as a teacher, he even subbed for our Astronomy Lecture class one night and it was probably
He is a great teacher. I really enjoyed his class, and I found him easy to understand. He makes the class interesting, and he is just an all around nice guy.
DONT TAKE THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!!!
he is very helpful and very nice. extremely approachable...and don't need to buy a text book...but you do need to go to class every day!!!
This teacher is a really great overall person and teacher. He enjoys the subject passionately and has very interesting lectures. All questions he will answer to best of his ability and is quite humorous at times. I reccomend taking him, show up to class without fail, and you will get an A with minimal studying.
Overall he is a really nice guy and will help you if you have questions. But if you don't like lectures then forget it! There is a midterm, final and 5 homework assignments, all based off of the lectures. It sounds easy, but if you don't like to constantly take notes on hours of a lecture with only a 5 minute break, then this class isn't for you.
Dr. Fields is a very knowledgable man. He's a bit nerdy but that's kind of expected of someone that devotes their life to astronomy. Attendance and good note taking are a must, as he is all lecture. Would suggest taking his course as a full 3-hour in one chunk, as his lectures are very intense and contain a lot of interrelated material.
Prof. Fields is a knowledgeable teacher, who will always set aside time for his students. His grading scale is lenient and no book is required, but you will need a ‘Clicker’ to answer in-class questions. Taking this class will allow you to describe how Main Sequence Star becomes a Red Giant...letting those around you know, that you're a nerd.
Don't need a book. Have to attend class! And you have to take good notes. But he's a awesome teacher and I suggest taking him!
Class is based on lectures, you must attend class and take good notes to get a good grade. Grade is based mostly on homework and exams. He is not an easy teacher but explains well in his lectures and you will learn a lot. If you are confused about something, go to his office hours and he take the time to explain it so clearly for you.
Feilds is a great instructor with crystal clear power point presentations and lectures. I have learned a lot from being in his class, and did gain a good sense of how the universe works. If your looking to barely get by in this class, good luck. I highly recommend this class if you actually want to learn.
Dr. Fields is a very nice teacher. He explains the topics very well and in a comprehensible manner. If you don't understand something, or can't make it to one of the classes, he makes time for you during his office hours. I learned a lot from the class.
ATTEND HIS LECTURES OR OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE LOST. HIS TESTS ARE BASED ON WHAT HE TEACHES, BUT MAKE SURE YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND. HE WILL EXPLAIN IT TO YOU UNTIL Y0U GET BUT ASK HIM!!!
Professor Fields Is an amazing teacher. If science and astronomy is not your thing, dont bother. He is very clear, ALWAYS willing to help, and "does not let you leave" his office until you understand a question. Fields is very clear, and a VERY knowledgeable man who has a passion for his career in astronomy. atten is a must. Take him. Great Man
He genuinely wants you to understand his lectures and learn from him. Always willing to spend time explaining something until you understand. A lot of people get bored in his class because they're immature. If you act like a college student and listen to him its an easy A
Best teacher Ive had so far. Very interesting and wants everyone to learn the subject. Tests are not too hard if you study the material. Goes over info. in class. Take him!
this is by far the hardest class ever. your grade is based almost entirely on the midterm and final, and the ques on the exams dont relate to the lectures so i felt it useless to study for the exams. the average grade on the midterm was about 45%. the only good thing is that he curves his lecture class
If you think Prof. Fields' class is hard then you suck at life. Prof. Fields loves science so much, it's awesome. The exams are not hard, he let's you redo the mid-term with only one minor stipulation. He doesn't give homework, only extra credit . If your brain can retain 20% of his lecture then you are fine. He's also very helpful. Take him.
Ridiculously easy. As long as you take thorough notes and do all the extra credit you WILL pass. I didn't even study for the mid-term and I got a 73 while the average was in the 40s. Study the answers he puts in the library and your notes and you won't even need to open your book. Mine is still in the plastic packaging and I'm selling it back ASAP.
He is obsessed with Astronomy, which makes him a good teacher of it. But he will make a BIG deal if you are late to his class, even by one second. He matches his tees with his lectures which is funny, but i dont recommend his class.
Difficult class. Uou must take VERY detailed notes, and study them often. Sometimes hard to follow lectures, but is very passionate about astronomy. Grade comes down to only midterm and final, so you gotta study. Be prepared to show up every day and study to do well.
VERY difficult class doesn't go by book you must take very clear and detailed notes. doesn't give homework but give midterms that are pretty difficult. I did not like this class at all. He leaves most questions unanswered and sometimes hard to understand because of his stuttering.
Extremely helpful teacher, really into what he teaches. Very nice and he cares about his students. I took him for both his class and his lab. An extreme nerd, wears T shirts that relate to that days study, lol. If you like astronomy you'll get an A.
Interesting teacher. Has a very noticeable stutter, which I thought would make the class difficult. Yet, after the first class, I barely noticed it. He's very passionate about his field, and he shows it. Wears t-shirts to go with the lecture, and has quite the geeky sense of humor. No textbook used. Take detailed notes of lecture and you will pass.
He's a really nice guy, but you have to think critically for his tests and homework - its not just memorization with him. Wants you to apply what you've learned to theoretical situations, which is really creative, but can make things difficult. No textbook required, take notes and pay attention/participates. doesn't pick favorites, nice to all :)
Professor Fields is a great teacher! he makes you think critically, not just memorize information. I took him for the lab, and I learned more in his class than in my actual astronomy class. He has the best shirts too!!
If you fail his class, its your fault. He will go above and beyond to help you understand his subject. He truly wants you to succeed, which is really refreshing. He's probably the best teacher I've had so far. He's a total geek, you can't help but love it. You must be respectful in regards to being on time and cell phone use, its his pet peeve.
Best teacher!
Great professor, he always assured the students that they would get the help they needed if they didn't understand something. Anyone who did badly in his class was just not trying at all because he gives you all that you need to succeed in his class. He doesn't require a textbook, so everything was from notes/lectures. He made it that SIMPLE
U do wrk 4 ur grde in this clas & it hlps if ur interested in the sbjt. Does have a stutter but aftr the 1st wk U tend not to notice it. Has pet peeve for late stdnts but I like tht as he kps a quiet environment. Bk not nded, just listen to lec & take notes. Ofrs ex cd & vry hlpful whn U nd. U lrn 2 thnk more logically. Pierce is lucky to hve Him!
Yeah, he has a stutter, but you get used to it. Knows his stuff. Take good notes and buy the book for review. 5 homework assignments, some extra credit. If you're stuck, take advantage of office hours. Not an easy class, not insanely hard either. The one time a week class can get a bit boring. Try to get the 2 times a week class-easier to take in.
awesome
dont even buy the book u dont need it at all. i pretty sure i failed both the midterm and the final and ended up with a B cause he everyone in the class did horribly and he had to use a huge curve. he doesnt explain anything dont even try to ask questions he just gives a more complicated answer. take him at youre own risk
I thot I was going2make a C/D in the class&got a B. Dont need book but take EXTENSIVE notes&always review. 1 midterm,1 test&about 5 hw ?'s; he makes it sound very complicated but if u analyze the ? it is fairly comprehendable. Very indirect in teaching but wants2make you think (for the thinkers out there!)I struggled but glad I made it out alive.
Dr. Fields teaches astronomy with a passion. He makes sure you know the basic fundamental concepts. If you pay attention in class you will leave with a working knowledge of astronomy that will always stay with you.
I'm not gonna lie; I'm a very good student, but this class was pretty difficult. There's hw assignments and the midterm and final. They're all short answers, and you really need to know your stuff. He is helpful, but easily irritated by students moving, doors, etc. If oyu spend time on this class you'll do fine. It was kinda hard, but I got an A
Good class, very hard but prof Fields obvoiusly cares a lot abou t astronomy. always wlling to take time to explain to his students. Plus he's kinda cute ;-)
He is the best Astronomy professor there is in Pierce. You will learn a lot and he is very easy to understand. He does make you work for your grade but you will learn so much.He is Great. He 's a cutie.
Fields is a great teacher because he is passionate (So passionate) about the subjects. However, this class is hard. Even if you do go to class and take good notes (Which you will need too) the tests are all essays and you REALLY need to know your stuff. Be prepared to study your butt off but to learn a lot. He has a slight stutter as well.
A true astronomer. I took him for Astronomy 1 and his lab Astro 2. If you take them both at the same time, it helps with understanding. He is very helpful. If you like astronomy and are passionate, he is the man to take. He also has viewing nights. Know that if you take astronomy you will know more about everything than most people. Great Professor
Strongly advise taking both Astro 1&2 with him, makes the subject much easier to learn bec. he teaches both classes hand in hand/at the same pace. Keeps you until the end of the class bec. he's so passionate about the topic, loves questions about material. You will truly learn from this course. Take copious amounts of notes for essay style tests.
Professor Fields is really nice. His classes are interesting, but his tests are kind of hard. Go to every class because what he mentions is what is on his tests, which he makes all himself. (you'll see what I mean) He is so nice though, truly passionate about teaching. At first you'll notice his stutter but after the 3rd class you won't anymore
I have never understood science until this class. You learn how to value the universe in a way that you never thought you would understand..be present at every class meeting and you will learn so much you will be sure to understand the whole subject.make sure to do the hw and ask questions when you don't understand the chapter,he is willing to help
NOTE TAKING IS MANDATORY IF YOUR NOT BUYING THE BOOK.HIS HOMEWORK AND TEST QUESTIONS ARE UNCLEAR BUT YOULL GET IT... GOOD LUCK
Dr. Fields is an amazing teacher. His enthusiasm for Astronomy is appearent from day one. His goal is for you to think "scientifically," not just memorize facts. Tests and homework can be a little tough but study your notes and you'll be fine. He is there to lend a helping hand and dicuss anything with you if you just ask.
He is a really helpful teacher. He says attendance doesn't count but it really does. If you show up to class and attend his office hours and do all of the work, he will give you an A or B. It's really a lot of work and you have to be motivated but he really loves his students and won't let you fail if you ask for help.
Tough class. Take lots of notes. Study notes. Study groups help. Learned a lot. Talks a little fast, so try to keep up (he allows recorders). Knows his astronomy!!
Very good and Interesting class. Will learn a lot if you pay attention
Pretty good professor! He knows what he's talking about, so u can talk to him if u don't understand something. He encourages you to see the whole picture rather than a portion of it. And with that encouragement, it helps u analyze life. :) Take his class, and good luck. And he's a sweetheart! :)
he is funny without tring!
Hands down the best teacher I have ever had. His excitement about the universe makes the you want to know everything that you can!! You don't need a book. Just make sure you take plenty of notes, attend class, and to just listen to him. He wants to help his students and he has a genuine desire to further your thinking and discovering on any leve
One of the top teacher at pierce. He loves astronomy. He knows his astronomy. He is funny. Always tries his best to make the students understand the material. He is honest too. He always trying to make you a better student. PS the universe is simple to understand.
Professor Fields is an amazing teacher. His teaching style is pretty unique - not a lot of senseless memorization of numbers and facts. Attend all his lectures and ask him questions. He's full of knowledge about the Universe and will make you appreciate science.
Great teacher! Very clear in lectures and is very willing to help if needed. I strongly recommend him.
I found Prof. Fields extremely helpful. He has a great interest in astronomy and he is always willing to answer questions. Make sure to be in class on time, do all the extra credit, and talk to him during office hours. I did that and I got an A! Also, participate in class. Good luck!
Always ask questions and do all your work. He is always willing to clarify anything for you. Do as many extra credits bc is boosts up your grade. Study throughout the semester bc everything you learn ties together for the final.Hes a great prof. and very knowledgeable. Strongly recommend him bc you will learn so much info. that will blow your mind!
Very helpful teacher. Be prepared to take a lot notes from his lectures. It was a challege for 3 hour class. Midterm and final make up almost the entire grade but just do the hw and extra credit and see him during his office hours. For a good grade, just study a lot for the exams.
Great teacher. He's very clear and helpful. make sure you take notes on everything because he gives a lot of important info. Attending his office hours are definitly helpful. This class was difficult for me due to its length and complex content. The midterm and final are short answer tests. You will learn a lot in his class.
He is a sweet heart, always willing to seat down and explain to you whatever you don't understand, he is great with emails accepts HW and answer questions via email. He actually tries to make the subject relate to our everyday.
amazing teacher, really into his work!
Professor Fields is the best college instructor I have ever had. His Astronomy class is by no means easy, but he challenges his students to think critically and understand the universe we live in. Absolutely excellent professor, I am privileged to have had him! Because of his class, I decided to be an Astronomy major.
I was just there for one measly day visiting a friend, and his expertise completely blew me away. His lecture was really enjoyable, and he was SO UNBELIEVABLY HOT. Take this class! I wish I had. :) Also, he was nice enough to let me sit in on his class.
This was one of my favorite professors of all time, I loved his class, sure its not easy but you really have to be into astronomy and he really facilitates that motivation, an amazing teacher, he told me to come back and talk with him anytime about astronomy and I absolutely still want to. Great proff. if you love astronomy you will love him.
Prof. Fields is the best. He loves teaching and is allways willing to help. YES, THIS CLASS IS HARD. BUT, this is college. Good for a slow semester and really helps with future classes. I became a better student thanks to him. Mid-term is hard but he lets you re-do it! Grades on a curve! Plus HE'S SO CUUTTEE! (ilovenerds) <3
One of the best teachers on the planet, if you love the sciences you will love him.
Mr. Fields was a great teacher. He teaches astronomy very well and is as into-it as can be. He made me want to learn about science and the stars. He is a great man. Take him if you are interested in astronomy, he will not disappoint.
Great professor! He's a fun, quirky teacher and is more than willing to help you better understand this awesome universe you live in! He's passionate and very helpful. It was one of the hardest classes I've yet to take and I got an "A"! Not best if you have a super busy schedule (I spent hours studying everyday) HIGHLY RECOMMEND recording lectures!
He is passionate about Astronomy which is why he is so clear and helpful to his students. This class will be difficult if you never ask question. You have to show him that you are willing to learn and study. He really enjoys helping students after class. He notices if you try and will help you as much as possible for both the midterm and the final.
All there is, is just 14 lab assignments that take about 2 - 3 hours. No tests. Except the final, in which you are allowed to use all your lab work to look for the answers. Very fun and creative labs, even though they can be quite difficult. You can tell he loves to teach, and is just having a fun time doing it.
Excllent teacher. Just make sure you are NOT LATE. He hates late arrivals and interuptions. He knows his subject and explains very well. He is very fair with ads and just make sure to do all the home work and turn in assignments on time and you will do great
He is the best professo I have ever had. He is hard and the test are all about the lectures so don't miss class. Participate in class and do the test corrections. He stutters, but is clear. I am a Physics major and if I could I would take him again. He will help you undestand, but just make sure to try and pay attention. You'll love him.
Excellent teacher, passionate about his subject. I don't even care about space but I loved his class. He knows most people don't care about math and so his astronomy course has none, and instead focuses on concepts behind things. His tests focus on logical reasoning, not regurgitating facts. If I could, I would take his class again.
Best Professor Ive ever had.
Easily the best Astronomy professor at Pierce. He is both knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. He's always willing to help and wants you to succeed in his class. If you pay attention and do all the work, it should be an easy A
Not an easy class, but don't let that scare you. It is true, he does stutter, it is not noticeable after a short while. He knows his stuff! Listen intently to his lectures. Ask questions when you can, too. Take enough notes, etc. He grades at a curve.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Really smart, really nice, very passionate about Astronomy. His goal is to help you learn. Go to viewing night, planetarium shows & prob solving workshops, very worth it. Take his suggestions, YOU will benefit. When the class is over it's amazing how much you have learned! Hard work but great classes.
This was one of my hardest classes last semester, but I don't regret taking it. If you go over the material each week and study hard, you will pass. He is an AMAZING teacher and is very passionate in what he does. He is also extremely helpful and loves when people ask questions, so ask a lot of questions! Goodluck!
Not a hard teacher but does require some critical thinking. Some homework but not much. I did not buy any textbook and got an A. Overall he is very interesting and I would recommend taking this professor to anyone who needs this class.
He is incredibly tough and hard. He gives homework every other week. He has a speech impediment which kind of gets in the way of understanding the material. He's very knowledgeable.Once a week class; attendance is mandatory. When taking notes he has pictures, and only writes 'key ideas'. You have to write down what he says. Midterm, Final, & hw.
This class is EXTREMELY hard!! His hw is very unclear and is mainly a guessing game. Long lectures and stays on one topic longer than 40 min, never completes lectures. You leave feeling clueless.
I have never walked out of taking a final feeling as refreshed & enlightened as I have with Fields. Super nice, funny (if you get his sense of humor), and super nerdy. Challenges you to think like a scientist and do your own research and investigation. This class is TOUGH, but so rewarding! One of the best teachers I've ever had. If not THE best!
Best professor I've ever had ever. He really challenges you to think and learn. I spent days working on the homework, and it was hard, but I have never felt so smart as I did after completing the assignments. Even if you have no interest in astronomy, you should take his class.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken at Pierce. Requires a lot of studying, analytic, and critical thinking. Wouldn't recommend if you have a busy semester. Despite the difficulty, he's a great professor and loves what he teaches.
Best professor I've ever had. He's informative, clear, knowledgeable, friendly, and encouraging. His homework and tests are challenging and entirely based on critical thinking. Any physical science major should take this course.
one of the most wonderful and passionate teachers ive come across. his class is by no means easy, he really wants you to think. very helpful and approachable with any questions, genuinely wants to educate and make sure his students understand the material. if you dont mind putting in the work, he is great.
Wow, tomorrow night is my last class and I can honestly say I am disappointed. "Entire universe 15 weeks not enough time." And he was right. Although we did cover the entire universe from the orbits of electrons to the orbits of stars, I want more. He's a cool guy and will help with absolutely everything.Don't make same mistake as me, go to office
Best professor I've ever had. He's really smart and has a nerdy sense of humor that I'm gonna miss. He's really passionate about the subject which makes the class really interesting. His class was probably the hardest class I've ever taken but it was also the most rewarding. I'm actually really sad that it's over.
Great class! Loved the lectures! The homework is kinda challenging. The mid-term and Final are hard, but he does give you ways to succeed. Attendance is important, and the book is sorta important. He wants everyone to succeed so go to his workshops and office hours. It helped me TONS!!! He is strict on certain things but a great professor!
If you do not have any interest in astronomy what-so-ever do not take this class. It will be hard. It will be very hard. If you however like astronomy take this class. He is very enthusiastic about it and you'll learn a lot of cool things.
Fields is one of a kind. Seldom do I find such enthusiastic, smart, funny, witty, nerdy professors on school campuses. He is full of knowledge that, if you're interested in how and why the universe is the way it is, will satisfy your hunger. The hw is short, but difficult It will challenge you to use your mind and apply what you learned in lecture.
This Professor wants everyone to become a Astronomer or a Physics major. The homework is very hard same thing with the Mid-term and final. Your answers are never correct. And its very hard to study for the final.
He is awesome! No matter how many questions you have, he will make sure he has answered them all. His exams aren't easy but your answers don't need to be accurate either. you just have to understand what he is asking. he interconnects everything. he makes you think, and it's very fun! this is the only class that i felt bad about because it was over.
If I could clone this guy 300x over and have him teach every class at Pierce, I would. The class is not easy but he makes it very interesting, is a fair grader, and always loves answering questions/talking about astronomy. He genuinely loves teaching his subject and wants you to learn it. I can't recommend him enough.
Wish there were more teachers like him. Genuinely loves teaching his subject and wants people to learn. Do the work, ask questions, and you'll come out so much smarter than you came in. Highly Recommend.
Dale Fields is an outstanding professor. He really does encourage learning and wants everyone in his class to succeed. It isn't a walk in the park, but if you are interested in Astronomy or want to learn about the Universe then I definitely recommend this class. If you just show up and take good notes, then it is an easy A.
Professor Fields is awesome! He has awesome shirts and a killer beard. He is very intelligent when it comes to Astronomy and physics. One of my favorite professors. If you show up to class and pay attention, you're bound to succeed in his class. And the material is all so interesting as well, especially how he explains it.
Most interesting class ever! Dr. Fields teaches the basics of everything. From the atom to the edge of the universe. His explanations are so well put that it seems simple. However, the assignments are not. You must understand the principles and think! Lots of extra credit. Thoroughly enjoyed this class.
This class should be 3 units instead of 1. 1 hour lecture then 2 hours full on lab. You can take it alone but I recommend with ASTR1, it will make more sense. The labs are very interesting but it is not star gazing. A lot of measuring, calculating and analyzing information.
Best class ever! He opened my eyes to the universe and made me question everything I ever knew. Everything he taught was simple to understand and loves to answer questions. He is so smart, witty, and very passionate about what he teaches. The dome projector is originally why I crashed the class and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made
Incredibly nice guy, I would recommend. Has deep intrest in this field. He does however have a speech impediment but you get used to it quickly and is not a bother. Needing to study is somewhat required, it really depends on how much you pay attention to class, there is a midterm and final.
Astronomy 1 notes are mandatory but there is no slide show nor does he write notes on the board Your notes are all by ear this is a lecture class meaning he talks for hours then you leave There is no quizzes Just homework He does have a speech impediment which makes it even harder to figure out what you need to write
Dale is one of the best professors I've had at Pierce. If you like science, astronomy or the webcomic "xkcd", this MUST be your physical science class. Dale is amazingly helpful, funny and friendly. Tests and homework are only hard if you don't study and take notes. Dale's passion is palpable in the room and I highly recommend his class.
The best. his passion for astronomy and teaching showed tremendously. I enjoyed and looked forward to coming to this class. he is extremely helpful, approachable, funny, kind. everything you want in a college professor. being that I am a visual learner I enjoyed his photos and physical demonstrations. work is hard if u don't study.
Coming into class I knew very little but was interested in learning. As the semester went on I realized Dr. Fields was very passionate. He kept things fun and interesting meanwhile teaching us the material (study and do hw!)I enjoyed his class very much;good to know there are STILL professors out there making a difference, one semester at a time.
My last semester at pierce college I needed one more class to be full time, and I am so glad I took this one. Fascinating subject and Dr. Fields is very passionate (you can tell from his science t shirts) class graded on a curve. I didn't study and scraped a B. You can get an A with minimal effort. Study class notes, textbook not necessary.
Professor Fields opened my eyes to a world of critical thinking. Education these days is based on memorization, but Fields pushes you to think more than this. It is a hard class, but it requires you to think about how you think. 1 midterm, 1 final (all written), homework is hard. Ask him for help. Go to his office hours. He's wonderful.
If your looking for an easy science class, do not take this class. If you really love astronomy and are interested in learning then this teacher is amazing for that. he is a passionate guy and pretty funny! he truly cares for the student. although, the homeworktestmidterm are all essay questions so studyingcopious notes are a must.
Dale Fields is a passionate teacher as well as astronomer. His lectures are long but he explains everything so well that you do not feel overwhelmed by the entire universe. He dumbs down everything in the universe so his students can understand it. Do not miss a single class cause you won't understand anything without his explanations. TAKE NOTES
BEST Professor I have taken in college so far!! Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. Will help you if you need extra help, don't be afraid to ask. He sincerely wants you to pass! I wish he taught more subjects! Bonus: Textbook not mandatory. His PPs & lectures contain all answers, so attendance in mandatory.
Professor Dale is an excellent teacher. Do not be fooled by the course description. This is an extremely difficult class, but, Prof Dale is thorough and full of useful information. He is accurate and provides numerous ways to help you succeed. He is always available to assist you in grasping the material. If you choose Astronomy, choose him.
The absolute hardest class I have ever taken, you will need to have a previous love for astronomy before you enroll! You will not get an A, he tells you that the first day of class and you should take his warning. He has completely demolished my GPA regardless of my constant presence in class but slow understanding of material and lecture.
If I could take Prof Fields for every class, I would. He makes his lectures interesting and funny and the material covered is breathtaking. His examples and demonstrations make difficult concepts easy to understand, and his passion for astronomy is contagious. His shirts and the planetarium are pretty cool. Don't really need the book, but it helps.
The actual HARDEST class at Pierce. You will fail if you do not attend class or study every piece of material in absolute death. Final is 50% of grade. You have to dedicate hours to this class outside of the lecture and you need the book to understand details for test. SO SO hard, can't emphasize it enough. Don't be fooled by the class description!
Prof. Fields is beyond intellectual!! His lectures can be long, don't daze off. Take notes then some, he is very willing to help, & organizes study groups. He definitely does make you work for it! participation is a must, ask questions, ask questions! This class requires hrs of studying & on your own research. plenty E.C but final is worth 50% :(
I loved his class! His lectures were so well done that even the most complex concepts are understandable. He's also very respectful and will never make a student feel stupid for asking a question. If you need a science class, take astronomy 1 with Prof. Fields! You won't regret it!
I really enjoyed my semester with Professor Fields. he's very clear and everything that he teaches but is a tough grader. he gives you a lot of extra credit so there's opportunity to make up for lost points but don't miss class. He's very friendly and always willing to help, the class is not easy but I definitely recommend that you take his class
Although this is the hardest class I have taken, it changed the way I viewed school. Dale has a passion for astronomy and a passion for teaching that goes beyond normal standards. He helps you every step of the way and makes sure you understand the concepts. It's the most fun I've ever had in school. Although I did get an A+, it took hours of work.
INCREDIBLE class! It's easy to understand and register because of his impeccable teaching skills! HW is easy if you take good notes. His tests are not THAT hard, if you truly study and are interested in the material. You'll retain the awesome info! He's super sweet, funny, and caring. BEST PROFESSOR YOU'LL EVER HAVE! And, you don't need the book!
Hands down, the best professor I have ever had. You could really tell he loved teaching astronomy.
Professor fields is extremely passionate about astronomy. He will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. His office hours are usually crowded with other students. every time I went in, I felt like I was either put on the spot, or extremely rushed. Study for his tests! PARTICIPATE! And the book is GOOD to have.
Everything you look for in a professor. He definitely loves what he teaches and wants you to be just as excited as he. He has impeccable patients and not only goes over "things you should know" but things that you should also ask. Friendly and patient yet punctual and thorough. A class that will challenge your mind and expand your curiosity.
Great Prof! It's a fairly difficult class but if you read the textbook, utilize office hours, and participate in class, you will have a great time and learn a lot! He cares about the subject and wants you to do well. Attend every class, small homework almost weekly and few exams.
He's a nice guy and cares but his homework's are very tough. His lectures are mostly boring and a lot of people fall asleep.
Professor Fields is the BEST! He's very passionate about Astronomy and knows his stuff. His lectures are always interesting and easy to understand. If you need help, he's always there to help you. He's really cool and funny. If you're taking Astronomy do yourself a favor and take his class!
Absolutely one of the best professors at Pierce. Incredibly passionate and hard working. Also one of the toughest classes I have ever taken. Focuses on critical thinking, has 1 homework assignment per week, occasional extra credit if you're early, a mid term and a final. Very approachable and caring, and has lots of office hours if you need help.
Prof Fields is great! His class was the hardest class I've ever taken at Pierce, but he is an amazing professor! He remembers everyone's name and makes astronomy very interesting! You can make an A if you take notes, study hard and go to his office hours regularly!
Dale Fields is an amazing professor. He is so dedicated to science and wants everyone to succeed. This class is NOT an easy A-- he really makes you think and work in his class but you will come out learning so much about the universe we live in. Truly an amazing class for intellectual growth.
Good professor and very humble. He will do everything to help you to succeed. I am not native English speaker and sometimes I had some difficulty to follow the rest of my classmate but Dr. Fields patiently knew my hard time and help me with tips and study guide. I was concern to fail the class but I followed the instructions and I passed.
By far the best instructor I've had during my college experience. I spent many many hours during his office hours and he patiently helped me with any idea that troubled me. Prof. Fields is genuinely interested in helping you learn and it's evident with his teaching style. He gave really thrilling lectures and is extremely humorous. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
He was an awesome teacher. I actually miss that class. It was very educational and he knows his stuff when it comes to science. I absolutely loved his class. Would recommend.
Dr. Fields is a great professor here is why: He knows how to teach you the information well and detailed. He helps you a lot in his come see me hours on homework and understanding the information. He gives 10 homework in total to help your grade. He also gives out extra credit. He also lets you correct your midterm and earn more points. GREAT CLASS
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He truly cares to make sure everyone does well, and really knows his astronomy. Amazing lectures, such cool concepts! Gives ten short answer homeworks with 3 questions each, and the planetarium is so epic. One midterm and one final, all cumulative/ short answer. He's really nice, too. HIGHLY recommended!
Professor Fields was the best. He truly cares about his students and gives so many opportunities to ask for help. It is a little difficult because it is Science and requires thinking but I think that he is a great teacher. Love his lectures. Make sure you take thorough notes, not just from the slides. Textbook isn't required, I didn't use it.
Professor Fields has been one of the best ive had the privilege of learning from. He is beyond intelligent in his field and wants nothing more but to share it with you. You absolutely must pay attention and take your own notes aside from slides. His homework is short but challenging and the midterm and Final are taxing. Ask questions to learn.
He is a GREAT and you will learn a lot. He is passionate about his work. The test and midterms are written so No multi question. Homework are only 5 questions but you gotta write like a page per question. Again he is really GREAT professor He teaches like his recruiting for NASA. so you have to work extremely hard for an A.
He's a cool guy and very patient and knows his stuff but he's strange when it comes to grading. Honestly he inspired me in so many ways unfortunately there is times were he really would throw me off in the grading criteria , i do recommend him but i would never take him again. He makes it a little more complicated than it should be.
My favorite teacher! So involved, and you can tell his passion for astronomy is real. He wears shirts that align with the lecture of the day, which always helped me for some reason. His lectures are so interesting and so in the classroom in the planetarium. He is always there for you, so are his tutors, and gives so many chances to improve grades
best teacher ive ever had! hes really passionate and he keeps the students interested. His lecures are very easy to follow as well. cant say enough good things about him!
Perfect Prof for an Astro class! he only gives a midterm and final, no tests and provides A LOT of extra credit. Makes the material easy and it a great professor. I would take again.
VERY HARD AND CONFUSING
This profesor is one of the greatest Ive had. Really smart and makes you appreciate what he is teaching.
Passionate professor and it shows. His lectures are amazing and his love for Astronomy is contagious. Get ready to put in work, but it's worth it. Would take again.
He is a really great professor, I knew next to nothing about astronomy and his class really did teach me a lot. He explains things so effortlessly that even I understood what he was talking about. I would always look forward going to his class. Asking questions is key in this class, listening and participating is a great way to learn with him.
He is great free thinker and lets you evaluate situations to connect them to the lessons he is great a bit of a tough grader and lectures are very long winded alot of HW but he is a great teacher that I leaned alot from
Fields is one of the best Science teachers I've ever had. Goes above and beyond to help connect material to students by drawing out pictures, physical gestures, and easy wordplay. He loves questions and allows everyone to share their opinions. If you're not good at science or math, take Fields! Textbook is on your phone! Manage your time!
Dr. Fields is the man I one day strive to be. The way he explains things is so thorough and so mind-blowing, it's difficult not to pay attention. He has such a passion for teaching and gives you every opportunity to succeed. I took this class for fun w no regrets. I learned more than I could've asked for! Definitely the brightest man I've ever met!
Labs are overwhelmingly long! The packets takes 2-4 hours to complete and due at the end of class. Lectures do not provide enough information to answer the given questions. Very confusing! The only way to earn a good grade is to collaborate with your group the entire time.
Prof. Fields is one of the best professors at Pierce!!!!!!! Just participate in the lecture, go to class, do the homework, and ask for help. Nothing about this class is super hard. You would learn a lot about science and studying after this.
he is an amazing teacher! he is super funny and explains difficult concepts in simple terms. his exams are not difficult and his extra credit is easy and fun.
Professor Fields' class was pretty hard. You will have 10 homework, midterm and finals, no quizzes. The homework has 3 questions but wants you to have a full page answer, if you don't then you won't get full credit on it. Some questions is opinion based but wants to have his opinion answered not yours. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class.
labs are very over whelming it will take you so long to complete and you might not be done by the end of class but Fields is a great professor he really wants you to think and analyze situations . Do that and you good to go. He cares more about a well written well thought out answer than being correct.
Mr. Fields is one of the few professors I have full respect for. He is so passionate in his field and wants every single student to excel. This class does take a solid amount of work, (detailed home works, taking notes, and lots of studying for the midterm/final) but if you put in the effort you'll be fine. Please please please take this class!
Would recommend. My grade improved a lot through the semester, so don't lose hope. Take advantage of extra credit and homework redos. An A is a 85. Worksheets and notes every week, but they're easy points, so make sure to get 100% on all of them. Fun and caring guy. Take notes and show up and you'll be fine. One midterm and one final (curved).
Honestly one of the best professors Ive ever had. Very approachable prof. His class is challenging because there is a lot of information but if you go to all the lectures it will help a ton. Take advantage of all the extra credit he offers and just do all the hw because it really adds up at the end of the semester.
It would be a shame to attend Pierce and not take a class with Mr. Fields! He is one of the most inspiring educators I have ever come across. As a current student of an elite East Coast school (I took his course in high school), I can tell you that Fields would be welcome in our physics department. I am so grateful to have been a student of his.
Professor Fields is my favorite professor at Pierce. Hes really respectful and cares about your success. Homework is straight forward and easy if you read the free online book. Usually 3 questions that can be answered in 3-4 sentences. Offers multiple extra credit chances, he has great lectures, and he answers all questions in class. Great guy
Stay on top of the reading, apply yourself to the homework's (notesoblem solving), and you will find yourself immersed in astronomy just as the passionate professor Fields is. A lot of the class focuses on the way your process information, so be prepared for "metacognitive" thinking and applying that to what you're learning in the class. 10/10
Literally the EASIEST class/professor ever, (and I don't say that lightly) he provides the link to an online textbook so no need to buy one. Does assign work but its a few questions and is mostly logical answers. No quizzes but the midterm and final are so easy, the more you explain your answer the more points you get! Take his lab it also helps.
I took the class because i love space but it also counts as a Physical Science course for credit! I have a hard time finding reliable, good professors, but not only is he a great teacher, but a passionate astronomer himself and it shows through lecture - its like i wasnt even going to class. He replenished passion i'd lost for school & science :)
He's an amazing professor! Grading scale is different which I loved. A85-100% His midterm and final are short answers but the more you write the more points you get. Lets you re-do hw and midterm to get full points. Makes astronomy really interesting but you really need to focus during lecture and read hw assignments to get an A.
Professor Fields is the most passionate science professor I've had and truly cares about students' success. Their lectures are very interesting and they take time to make sure students understand the material. This class isn't an easy A, but it's doable. Do the extra credit, midterm corrections, and homework reworks because they really add up.
Professor Dale is super wholesome. topics can be kind of confusing but they make sure to thoroughly explain so everyone understands. try not to miss class because lectures are key especially since they write their exams the way they speak. dope grading system too! 85% > A I got a C because I goofed on showing up so don't be like me, go to class
i dont think i have ever met a more passionate teacher. he really loves what he does, and he really cares about his students. he allows you to redo all your assignments, and gives great feedback. he loves answering questions so never feel shy to ask. i wish more teachers were like professor Fields.
On your first day he will tell you this is the hardest class on campus and you are like oh no, what did I get myself into?! Stick with it, it will be the best thing you have ever done. Its a really hard subject who knew? neuroscience is a peace of cake in comparison to me. But once it starts clicking, you will feel smarter for it.
Professor Fields is the best in his field. He is very knowledgable and if you are into astronomy like I am you will LOVE his class. Not an easy A but you will get it if you try a little. He is so inspiring.
Dr. Field is one of the best astronomy professors at Pierce. I took him back before the pandemic. He explains all the topics very well. He teaches not just by telling but by visualization as well. Take him and I guarantee you will not regret it.
Professor Fields is honestly one of my all time favorite professors at Pierce College. They treat each and every student with a great deal of respect. If you're taking their class during the pandemic I highly suggest visiting their office hours to grasp the material better. Make sure to study the laws of physics they go over in class it helps a lot
Easy class if you want to just want to pass with a C, but he makes you work for that A, extremely tough grader. His homework is basically a test, and those questions on it make you regret taking this class. Picky with everything you turn in. Good luck if you don't have a lot of prior knowledge of space
First, there is a textbook but the one Professor Fields uses is online and FREE. Fields is a good professor I took his online class. Homework is due every Friday, for the most its 1 medium-difficulty assignment and 2 very easy assignments. The hardest part is exams. Great prof, cant go wrong with fields.
This class took most of my time this semester, homework is due every monday. All the info you need is usually in the lessons sometimes google was needed. I heard from a friend in a different lab that another professor was a bit easier. However, this class still a solid class.
This was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Professor Fields is quite caring and understanding, but unfortunately, is not great at explaining things - often making instructions unclear. There are upwards of 4-5 complicated lab assignments assigned every Monday. This class was horrible for my mental health so beware of this class.
To get an A you really have to understand the material, but there are a lot of helpful tutors and the professor is always willing to help. The class is not easy but it is not impossible, the grading is fair. You should not get behind because it will be difficult to catch up. Tests are all free-response and really measure your understanding, proctor
Literally just run away from this class. Was the hardest class I have taken in college. So extra for no reason. You are forced to go to tutors to get a better grade in class. He grades SO TOUGH on homework assignments. The exam is all written answers and given only 1 hr to take. This class gave me so much stress for a class I thought would be fun.
Truly one of the most frustrating classes that I have taken. The homework assignments are literally only two points but makes you do so much work. You will only get both points if your answer matches what he wants. The midterm and final are very difficult. The professor does not provide much help if I'm being honest.
This has been the best teacher I have had while taking classes at Pierce. They provide good feedback and are receptive to personal emergencies. The assignments can be difficult but they are fair and Dale provides opportunities for improvement and tutoring. If you don't attempt to utilize the provided help, this course may be difficult for you.
A great professor. Truthfully someone who isn't bad by any means. Instead of me saying "Enroll for a free A." I will say do the work, the extra credit work and you will get that A because you have to put time in. They are great and so helpful. I couldn't recommend any more. Office hours are the best thing you can utilize when taking this professor.
Professor Fields is a great professor. Gives feedback on homework and quizzes. Homework is tough, a lot of explaining on your behalf. Quizzes are easy. Midterm and Final are difficult but as long as you do the reading, homework and use the feedback you'll be okay. Grading is weird and not favorable though, also used Proctorio on Midterm and Final.
They give amazing feedback, yet the homework is incredibly difficult. There is many resources, like tutors and I believe office hours. There is a lot of reading and studying required, but astronomy is a difficult course. I would recommend this course if you are interested in astronomy. but not if you are just looking to fill the GE requirements.
Prof F was amazing in teaching but also giving GREAT feedback and showing appreciation towards students. Their class is difficult due to needing to over work your brain to do the work BUT it's all group work and they grade on a curve. NO midterm and the final allows to use all prior assignments for help. HARD class, great professor, overall doable.
Actually worst class I've ever taken. Nothing is on quizlet (or literally the textbook). Unless you're planning on owning NASA and building your own rocket for space, don't take this class. It's really not worth it, trust me. The teacher is like trying to impress JPL or something. idk why the rating is 5/5, the class is too hard for no reason.
Professor Fields's class was challenging, but because you can work within groups, it definitely isn't as complicated as doing it by yourself. Highly recommend taking this class alongside the ASTRON 001 lecture as it's really helpful and they coincide.
Ugh, If you are taking this class to fulfill your science requirement, do yourself a favor. Choose another course! If you are a physics major, you have come to the right place. His HW assignments are absurd, his exams are RIDICULOUSLY difficult and can destroy your grade. I will say, however, he is very approachable if you need help.
This professor was insanely difficult going into the semester but ended up being one of my favorites. They are relentlessly funny in lectures and allow for homework to be redone for full credit. The A is not easy to get, but if you do well on the homework and go to tutoring, it is achievable.
Horrible predecessor would never take again terrible homework assignments
Fields is a very challenging but inspiring prof. I'd specify that this class is not an easy A but should be taken by anyone interested in space/astronomy. He does the most out of any science prof. I've taken to make lectures interesting & he truly cares for the students. I loved going to office hours to just ask him random questions about space!
Professor Fields is an amazing professor who is passionate about they lectures. The trick think like a scientist. If you love science take this class. They offers extra credit if you take tutoring. This class is not multiple choice so that was for me what made it difficult because you have to explain and write out your reasoning in your answers.
Took for ASTR 01 LAB! Class was really fun, alot of hands on labs but labs were long and required alot of critical thinking. Allowed to work in groups and Professor offered tons of help. No homework unless lab is unfinished. Come to every class prepared to work and use your brain. Professor was well educated and sweet but class was not easy.
Professor Fields' AST001 is a challenging course, but engaging lectures and hands-on labs make it rewarding. Utilizing resources like unstuck study helped me stay on top of the workload and earn a solid grade.
Respectfully, this professor has not been understanding towards me and has not been able to accommodate me. The assignments are overwhelmingly difficult, the prompt do not make any sense. They do not give us a study guide for the midterm/final. We were being asked questions that were not really connected to the lecture. My mental health declined!
His astronomy 001 class was super easy but he is very nitpicky. He's paranoids about ai in homework so if you got a little off topic and will mark you down. Every is worth 1-2 points except the exam but the homework will make a difference. He also gives the textbook for free.
I was so scared going into college, and I had Professor Fields for my first ever class, and he welcomed me with open arms. He was always there for my needs, super supportive, and he made sure I had everything I needed to be successful! Great class, great professor!
Wow, when you read the negative reviews on Professor Fields, you realize that it's being written by 1 single obsessed student who spams dozens and dozens of Pierce College professors that attacks the professors personally. If you take Professor Fields class, you get to know how caring and talented he is and how much he supports his students!
He lets you do the work until you get it right! gives good feedback on what to fix in order to get full credit, took the course online so there was a lot of homework as expected but nothing hard, lots of reading to answer the homework questions but he provides a link of the textbook what is a pdf so no cost! Recommend 100/10.
Amazing professor, I'm notorious for dozing off during lectures, but I have never had an issue in his class. Professor Fields makes astronomy fun to learn about with his amazing lectures. Not homework-heavy and he's very understanding of late work.
This professor is absolutely amazing. The lectures are so easy to follow and entertaining. They are an incredibly patient, forgiving, understanding and helpful teacher. As long as you stay on top of the work and do not procrastinate, you are set for success.
I took Prof Fields for lab. I liked it! They make lab super engaging and you really get to use your brain. It felt refreshing. I didn't have them for lecture but I wish I did! The most fun I've had in a class in a while and I hope they teach more classes! Would recommend. The labs can be a bit tough but they're really great at clarification.
Great professor. Lectures are great and interesting. Some what difficult class but do you work and study and you should be fine. Gives great feedback. He loves to teach and connects with his students
I really enjoyed Professor Fields' class! It allowed me to rediscover my love for space and everything astronomy. You can tell that Professor Fields' has a genuine love and passion for astronomy which makes the class that much better. If you take your education seriously, then I would highly recommend Professor Fields' class!
