Pretty easy to get along with, knows the subject, will grade on curve.
Good teacher, you can learn alot from him if you pay attention and come to class

He knows what he's doing and is very helpful to those who need it.
Go to class and participate and you will do well
Finals are easy, regular tests are really hard. very helpful.
Very helpful teacher and caring.
Useful topics, does not keep it interesting, Micro-Economics was easier, more interaction with the class
Average student will not do good in this class. Our average test score on the last test was 58%, that should tell you something.
Made philosophy interesting, but micro was a complete mess. He knows the material very well, but doesn't know how to teach it.
can relate the material very well. go to class and pay attention. dont really have to even read the book
BORING, HARD TO UNDERSTAND, TO SOFT SPOKEN
He was better at teaching Phliosophy he really kept my attention His ecn is confusing but if you really try you'll get through it ok
He is a very nice guy. A little soft spoken, but grades fairly.
He is a fairly good instructor, and he is on the board of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. He really knows economics well, and is an advocate for free markets.
puts you to sleep!
He is a great teacher, he makes the class interesting and is willing to help students if they don't understand. I would recommend him to everyone.
A very intelligent professor who truly cares about what he's teaching. Very insightful and brings concepts into perspective through real life examples. I recommend him to everyone.
you need a good nap? take him...hope you can teach yourself!
Although I was Hotel/Restaurant Mgt (1996), I learned lot in his class, and still carry some of the basic concepts and philosphy that I learned. He was a GREAT teacher. You will realize how much you have learned once you are in the 'real' world!. I would take a contining Ed. class through him versus Haywood anyday of the week!

dont take this class as an 8am!! other than that do your work and pay attention, maybe you'll do good.
I took him as a freshman for one of my first econ classes, and let me tell you, that guy is way too smart to be teaching non-econ majors. He is on a completely different level than the average person. If you don't know much about econ dont take him.
boring.
This man is the most intelligent man that Northwood employs...it is too bad he is probably under paid. Very helpful, not an easy grade, but you learn something by taking him.
His tests are crazy. Makes you do a debate and grades hard and unfairly. He doesn't cover much of anything at all in class you need to look it up yourselves.
Very smart teacher that makes learning enjoying.
Very hard. A lot of work, and he grades really hard. Tests are nearly impossible.
he is a very nice intelligent man. knows his stuff.
This teacher almost made me cry! He told me that I needed an English teacher for reading comprehenion! The tests were very very hard, and it was really hard for me just to get a C!

Nice guy, but a ridiculously boring class, and its so hard because we never discuss what we need to for the tests, and its not clarified (the way he uses it in the tests) in the book. So most students are lost.
Most of the bad reviews are likley from students who didn't want to work hard. However, he is an excellent teacher who pushes his students. He is passionate about what he does. No grade inflation here. Great teacher!
Very hard class to pay attention in. Straight lectures for the full two hours. Make sure you read the outside book that have to read for this class, or the last couple weeks will be hectic for you. It doesn't seem like much work in the beginning, but be sure to be organized and do the work as the syllabus tells you. Acts much higher than students.
I learned stuff without having to read the book. I think he was a good teacher.
Dr. Matcheck is that one professor that makes school worth attending.
wow, if your a freshman and you need to take philosophy 110, your basically screwed... you either have matcheck who will talk about a topic for 2 hours if no one stops him.... so boring!!!! horrible class but then again other friends took "Amin" or whatever and the guy doesn't speak English... its a toss up with what you want
I believe he's avery smart guy but ite hard teaching a class that no one gives a damn about
I believe he's avery smart guy but ite hard teaching a class that no one gives a damn about
JUST ok.
great.
he's helpful, if you ask for help
He's not a terrible teacher but he's not good either. At times I think he is extremely rude to students. He definitely thinks he is above the rest but I kind of feel bad for him because teaching philosophy would suck. Terrible subject. I wouldn't take him again...
I thought he was an absolutely wonderful teacher. He is strict and has high expectations and does get frustrated with his classes. But if you go to class, participate, and talk to him. you will get a decent grade. He wants his students to gain something from his class. I would definitely take him again. But he is not an easy A.
Nice teacher but sometimes hard to understand.
I took the class on my freshman year. He is not a bad teacher but he expects everyone to be overachievers. Once he said people hardly get A in his classes. Which is true. I personally wouldn't take his class again.
I took his classes about 15 years ago. I was a foreign student. I really enjoy his classes. He is a strict professor but easy to get along with professionally. Personally he can be a good friend until even today.
Awesome guy. Took him in a mini.
Not only was Mr. Matcheck one of the best professors and genuinely interesting people I've meet, he has written numerous recommendation letters for me , years after the fact! I took his class in 2007 as a freshman and absolutely loved it! Granted Econ was my major, he makes the topic very fun, and does not "lecture at you" he aims for discussion!
This class was very hard. doesn't post grades, tests are really hard
this class is challenging but if you read your assigned pages it is passable
Matcheck is a great teacher if you can decipher what he's saying. He help during office hours, i'd advice tutoring for the 3 grades he puts all year.
Took the Honors version of this course. His lectures always went up to the end of the class, even a few minutes past. Tests were a very stressful thing, he made them sound harder than they were. He is a very nice person but I think he over-complicates things a little bit. His voice lulls you into such a relaxed state. Has some humor too.
The Professor taught a difficult subject, but made it more 'human' by introducing study sheets that is helpful to students. The Professor had a very human and down-to-earth approach to his teaching style and understood it was NOT an easy subject. He went above and beyond to meet at odd times and made it his mission to see me succeed.
You'll love Matchek. His classes are so much fun and you learn great stuff.
People like him make you want to become an econ major. Very nice person and he knows so much. You can take a lot from Matcheck
if you plan to go to graduate studies, you have to take this course and the professor rocks
Learning interesting stuff without stress. Since then I took another class with him and loved it too. Matchek is cool
one of the best professor at Northwood, great interaction in the classroom
Matcheck is very competent and understanding of your circumstances. Class was fun and we covered a lot.
The guy is an expert in the area and loves to teach it.
this coursewith Matcheck is worth a whole semester of higher education
All Northwood students should take this course. Very thought provoking lessons and he's a spring of knowledge.
he's kind and very smart, ask questions in class and you can learn much from him
Everyone should take this course- very interesting lectures and the instructor was always ready to help us.
You couldn't ask for a better professor in economics. You'll have to work hard for your grade but he's very flexible and gives great advice.
a truly amazing professor who cares about his students and the subjects he teaches
Awesome instructor. He teaches at a pace that makes it impossible not to follow. Matcheck has a great personality and relates to students very well.
A very inspiring teacher. You absolutely must attend lectures, lecture questions will be on exams. It's an easy A if you put forth the effort.
Matcheck is nothing short of awesome. I wish he could teach all my classes. He made what I thought would be dry economics subject very interesting and relevant.
He is a very good professor with nice personality that shows in class. I would definitely take his class again.
Inspiring and knowledgeable instructor. A life changing course. You must take economics with him!
I learned a lot and the prof has great connections--will helps students get jobs and internships when they excel in the course.
A really a great guy. He loves his job. Matcheck is very engaging and cares about his students' success in his courses and beyond.
He challenges you further than most professor I've taken at Northwood.
very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching economics, hard but also one of the most helpful classes I took here
Matchek is an awesome professor, you will learn so much from him.
very interesting and provocative readings and a very kind and smart professor
He knows his stuff and expects you to learn it pretty well.
I enjoyed the class, the professor has picked interesting readings but you can't cover too much in just 50 minutes per week.
the class is fun and easy, good to know what Northwood stands for
I liked the course and the instructor.
He'll talk your ears off but he gives great lessons about why freedom works.
Dr. Matcheck is arguably the greatest lecturer I have ever had a class with. His classes are taught so that complex economic concepts are presented in a fluid, understandable manner. You would benefit from always being in class, as his lectures are not only the best way to learn, but also hard to replace. Every NU student should learn from him.
Prof. Matcheck brings many interesting concepts to the table and teaches them well. He is very much lecture oriented and sways from his slideshows most of the times. Be prepared to read as his test and quizzes almost directly relate to the weekly readings. Although he does teach these concepts in class, he pulls specifics for the test from the book
I took him while he was going through a lot of personal things with family and declining health. Given that he did the best he could, tough class, but I was able to pass. Take notes!!! Don't skip class and ask as many questions as you can!
Matcheck is like your conservative grandpa, he has alot of opinions but is a decent enough person and teacher if you just talk to him, he is more than willing to help out if you need it, Lectures are not the most interesting, but it was also a subject that many people find boring. go to class, do the work, you will do well
Don't do it. You think it's gonna be ok but it won't be. Save urself
