Good lecturer. Uses TAs for classwork with varying success. Hard subject but presented well. Annoying, and difficult for some, pretest that you have to pass before any work counts. OK looking for his age, which is ancient, but a good dresser.

Good teaching system. Understood how to do almost everything. The final exam is really hard though. Went from a high B to a mid C because of the final.
During lectures he always seemed enthusiastic about trying to teach us what was in his notes, which was nice. He accomodates students who can't/won't attend lectures by distributing recordings of the lectures. He is open to questions, and when he makes rounds for his classes he always helps the students with their work.
He can't even read what he writes on the board. He makes way too many mistakes during his lectures. I found that this confuses people more than it helps. I was actually better off ignoring his lectures and figuring out the stuff on my own. He also makes the exams a lot hard than it needs to be.
Prof. Myers knows what he's doing. During lectures, he goes over simple problems, but his exams seems to be at a different level.
Myers is a NICE GUY but his lectures are so boring. It is verbatim from the notes, which are very helpful to have because everything is right in front of your eyes. He seems to just go over the problems but not very good at explaining. Hard to understand because he speaks soft. IF you ask him a question, he will help you..briefly.
Knowledgeable that's for sure. But his methods are hard for me to understand. I sometimes have to rely on prior teachings (from HS) to understand his notes.
Difficult class. I needed to put a whole lot of time into my studies just to pass this class. Lab is required for taking weekly quizes. Lab instructor was not helpful; his substitute teacher was! The lab quiz scores should have given the lab instructor insight that his students need help....HELP them!
Lecture session...you're better off teaching yourself.
lectures are extremely boring and not all that helpful. he mumbles a lot & he clearly states in the beginning of the semester lecture is optional since they're verbatim of him notes. it really all depends on how helpful/lenient your TA is
Dale does not help very much personally with students. People stopped showing up to his lectures after the first one. Did not care for his teaching style
A great support, and help. I went for help ALLL the time, in a class whichstarted our with over 300 people. He`s a great teacher, and I love how he had a CD, which you didn`t really pay a dollar for, since you could give it back to him at the end of the semester with feedback, and he`d reimburse you. He is totally organized with his material.
Class is too big. The prof. is helpful, but in lecture its kinda muffeled. To be honest, I don't like the math dept. at UH. I would say avoid taking it there.
its easy to understand wats going on in the lectures. you have homework due often. the homework and class work is easy but the tests online and the computer are freakin hard!! they should prepare u more or not make the tests so difficult. he's nice but i kinda dont like him.
Homework and classwork are the easiest, but when it comes to computer exams and pre-tests, they're really hard, especially just entering each value. You need to give up a lot of time out of your schedule for studying and homework if you wanna past. Unless you're just naturally gifted at math.
Dont buy the textbook its useless. Just study the classwork and homework, do the practice online quizes a couple of times to get use to how to input your answers and you should do good. Lectures are mandatory because the notes is what he is going to explain. Final is difficult. Study your logarithms and recent material.
The way he teaches is straight off of the notes you buy from the book store i personally did not understand his lectures and if you don't understand it watch the video lectures there more helpful than Myers's lecture
Final is worth about 1/2 your grade, I had a B- going into the final, scored a solid A, but only managed a B overall for the course?how does that work out? Lectures hard to follow; very helpful during office hours tho. Textbook is confusing. Spent about 2h/night studying for this class; it's very challenging if you're not naturally good at math.
UH doesn't exactly have the best mathematics teachers, but although this guy is extremely weird, he's actually a pretty good teacher. The book is worthless and he just goes off his notes anyway. The computer tests suck, but I always did pretty good (B's and A's) and barely ever studied. The main thing is his final is extremely hard.
Math 140 is a difficult course, especially if you're not good at math. I was an honors math student and still had a difficult time. His lectures are pointless, but attendance is advised because of quizzes. Homework is easy. Tests SUCK. They're computerized and are so hard! Make sure you have a good TA... your grade depends on that.
I couldn't stand this guy. The only lecture is at 8:30 am, which would be hard enough to make it to if the class were interesting. His lectures are straight from his notes, so they're useless going to, but attendance is mandatory because of the quizzes given for the iClickers. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! just keep retaking the placement exam
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Retake the placement and get into calculus, or go somewhere else. This guy is an awful math professor. You can't even understand him during the lectures. Tests are computerized which sucks MAJORLY. Final is really hard. Just pray you get a good TA.
He's always available in his office and very helpful when you need help on HW or prepping for an exam. but this was the hardest class i have ever taken in my life. I stayed up til 2 am or later to study. If you can, take Math 140 at a community college if it's not vital for your major. and his final is the hardest i have ever taken.
Took the 140 class and it was really hard. I had to study til the late hours of the night. But if you go to him for help, he's always available and is eager to help you even for exams. It's vital to go to every lecture.
Half the homework and all the exams are done on WebAssign so DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Go ahead and Google "WebAssign" and read all the problems other students have had. Attendance is mandatory due to iClicker quizzes during lectures. Lots of students had problems keeping track of which days online or written assignments are due.
This class is very work-intensive. For every lecture you get 3 homework assignments. His tests are extremely difficult and timed. If you have to take this class, then be ready for A LOT of work and studying and PRAY you get a good T.A. I recommend Geoff Patterson. He practically saved my life in this class!
He's quite horrible due to the fact he makes a LOT of mistakes and circles the mistakes he makes when someone points it out. He's quite useless, I missed so many lectures and learned it all in Lab. Go Aaron!
Ok at teaching lectures. Mandatory due to iClicker quizes. If you have Geoff Patterson, he will save you a lot when it comes to tests. Final is worth 1/2 your grade so you need to study. I got good grades in math, but this class is hard! don't take if he he's still using WebAssign, it will screw you over!!!!
Horrible! For each class meeting there is 1 quiz, 1 classwork, and 2 homeworks due. Exams are done online, so the answers are an all or nothing deal. There's a quota on how many people he can pass so the grading system is scaled to how you are doing in the class, no matter what your nominal grade average is. Don't buy the book! We never used it.
Don't take him, if you need precalc, take it with someone else. The gateway exam doesn't guarantee you pass with at least a C. Tests are ridiculous because they have harder content than what he teaches/assigns and answers need to be exactly what the computer has. He's also more concerned about seating arrangements than the welfare of his students.
This is the worst class Ive ever taken at UH, its ridiculously hard and all the other reviews about him are 100% true. I would NEVER recommend anyone to take this class. (I had to because he was the only professor teaching 140 this semester). This is the most work intensive and difficult math class Ive ever taken and he actually made me hate math
This is a very hard class. You will have quizzes throughout lecture every day and lots of HW. The worst part of the class is that all exams, except the final are done on computer which is ridiculous as you make a minor error and get 0 credit as no partial is given. Plus the questions on the exams are twice as hard as the most difficult HW problem.
Horrible. First day of class and you already have a lot of HW to do. You need to do a lot of HW to keep up with his class but the way he explains things is often unclear. There is a quiz every lecture so its important to attend. Exams are online and when entering in your answers, one mistake will land you no points; no excuses at all. Stay away!
HORRIBLE!! We have a quiz every class and he assigns homework and webassignments. When responding to emails he only uses one word answers, doesn't seem to care at all. Lecutres are confusing and he doesn't explain examples clearly. I would not advise this class to ANYONE!!
Terrible teacher. He is not clear about what he is teaching and skips over steps, which makes things confusing. His notes don't help at all. His homework is decent, but the exams are ridiculously difficult and include complicated problems that he's never gone over before. Don't take his class.
Myers is by far one of the most boring professors i have ever had. He is NOT helpful and refuses to show any emotion to his students. He cant even pronounce the words "measurement" or "roots" correctly...and hes a MATH teacher. Hes boring. And gives the most ridiculous assignments ever. HIs class is HARD and pointless. P.S. He smells really BAD.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! DO NOT take his class. by far the worst decision i have ever made in my life. worse class. he is the only math 140 teacher so just avoid the entire class. TRUST ME STAY AWAY. ps. he smells bad! hard class with no help what so ever from TA's or Myers himself. hardest exams in all college hands down
Not the best or the worst teacher. He definitely assumes that you know fundamental math, and if you don't then you may be lost for a bit of the lecture. VERY monotone. Often on top of things, such as notifying you about upcoming events. There's a cumulative final, so be sure you understand all content.
I really liked this class. I liked how we had a lecture and then a lab to clear things up. I wish I had lab before lecture, though, because there are iClicker quizzes every class. I hated the Gateway exam. My TA was really clear and helpful. Also, I liked that the Math department has tutors.
He really is an awful teacher in my opinion. He should retire for the sake of humanity.
Honestly, he's an odd guy. But if you can past that and pay attention in class, you'll find that he explains things really well. Overall, I found that I learned a lot from that class.
Terrible. Guy moves way to fast and he is awkward. Do not buy the book it was 120 bones and i never opened it. I got a B+ only because of my own studying. Computer tests were bogus too. Any way hes not very good but you can easily get a C.
If you can place into Calculus DO IT! avoid this class. He gives a ridicules amount of homework. He gives these online test and homework that's way too hard for a 100 level class. Other than the online test and homework it would not be so bad.
If you are in his office every now and then and he knows who you are he might help you out a bit. but for the most part what everyone else is saying is true.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. You will NOT use it. He is confusing but if you ask for help, he'll be there. BE SURE to take the online gateway, pre-exam 1 and 2 MULTIPLE times. Its very frustrating as "none" can be wrong but "NONE" is correct so you have to make sure you know what the computer is asking for. Thankfully, he grades using a curve.
Not a very clear instructor. Classwork due the first day. Very dry personality. Knows material well, but can't teach it to beginners very well. Don't recommend taking him. Hardly to never used book.
I actually liked the way Myers taught. It were the exams that got me. A letter grade can easily be docked off if you didn't put parentheses and such. As long as you study the pre exams and practice problems, you can pass with a C. HW&CW were easy and luckily I had a lenient TA.
I kinda liked the way he taught. math labs really helped clarify things that were in lect. DONT BUY THE BOOK (you cant return it FML) and he never teaches from it. I liked the notes, loved the videos (use it). WATCH OUT: this class is on a bell curve so only 6-7 ppl get A's and the online tests can screw you easy. study, study(or place 241)
He leads a really boring lecture and you don't use the book at all.I felt that there was way too much work for the class (Online and Handout HW). The only thing that saves you are the TA's. I would not recommend taking this class you should place into Calc if you can or else suffer a very hard semester with "THE DALE" and his stylish Jesus Sandals
Would teach you how to do the hw the day after it was due, made things much more complicated than it had to be and on top of not being very helpful or interesting, he had very bad body odor. If there is any way you can avoid taking this class i would advise it. good luck.
This class is really tough. I've never studied so hard for math in my life. If you're not good at math, I suggest getting a tutor. I stayed up until midnight doing math HW until I got a tutor. A lot of people had problems because they didn't know basic hs alg 2 stuff. The key is to know the material&turn in all HW on time, especially the WEB HW!
I regret taking this class tenfold. It was frustrating, hard, and boring. Way too much work for a 100 level class! Online hw takes countless hours. On top of that, I could have placed into math 251 with my placement test score and not received a C- on my transcript. He grades harshly, and my gpa was raped. He made math miserable :(
He's really into math and it shows. However, the course is difficult in the beginning because he doesn't tell you anything about his whack system. But, once you learn how the HW, CW, and tests go, the class is manageable. Go to lecture and buy the lecture notes. Study the packet, and you'll do well on the paper tests.
Don't know what everyone else is saying, he's actually a really good professor. Can be boring (but hey it's math) but he puts lectures in the most simple manner. Handouts are pretty challenging to follow but his lectures are a HUGE help. Agree with everyone else in terms of his exams; they definitely require a LOT of studying.
Those who complain that this course is too difficult are students who learned nothing in high school or just lazy. Professor Myer is definitely a good teacher, always willing to help, esp during office hours! this is a challenging course but it really makes us study. Only a lazy person would complain! Take this class, put in effort in your study!
It's hard to understand the homework. Classwork is so easy, but homework is 100 times harder. DO NOT ever think to take him if you are beginner!!
Enthusiastic, but often too soft when lecturing and sometimes isn't too clear on what's being taught. You will need a Windows platform, or a Mac with Windows on it, for the second half of the course. He offers PC rentals, which is great. Big grading curve, but an even greater learning curve. A LOT of work for a 1-cred class. Be prepared.
He is the WORST!!!! Not clear and so fast, and i dont know why he curve because he want to fail people!!!! THATS JUST INSANE!!!!
Great professor. He is always there if you have any questions. He goes around the class at least 3 times every class session to make sure everyone is caught up. The subject itself is hard so beware. The first 5 weeks is the easiest so if you are having a hard time, I suggest you drop the class.
Myers goes at a fast pace. Kind of awkward, gives the death stare at you if you're talking loud! Otherwise, if you pay attention in class and go to the labs, you'll get the material!
There is no doubt that Dr. Myers is a smart guy, and that he knows the material, but he does not know to teach it so that students understand it. There were also multiple occasions that he did not show up for scheduled meetings I made. This class is a lot of work, and you will need a lot of outside help.
To put it simply Dale is the worst professor in charge of the worst class. He is literally useless. The only way you will learn anything is by seeing the TAs(TAs are great!) and self teaching. This is not an enjoyable class do everything possible to skip 140 with Dale.
This class was made to keep you awake and working for the rest of your miserable college existence. Avoid this class at all costs. Way to hard for 100 level class. Classwork is easy. Homework was 1000 times harder. TAs are helpful, but the exams... SO NOT WHAT YOU STUDIED FOR. CALCULUS friend can't even understand the homework. AVOID. THIS. CLASS.
The exams are what makes this class terrible. The first two are on the computer which, if you mistype one thing, you miss the whole section which can cost -10% on the test! Classwork and homework is probably the easiest thing about this class and it barely counts for anything. Also the gateway is "necessary" to pass this class. Be ware of those too
Save yourself from taking this course with Dale. You can tell he looks down on us dumb peasants by his reaction to our iclicker answers. Thank goodness for the TA's and their lenient grading, but even then hw isn't worth ish. SAVE. YOURSELF.
Undoubtedly the worst professor/teacher I have had in my schooling career. Unclear explanations, rushed iClicker questions, test questions that we weren't prepared for, and the fact that you may not pass even though you get a C. BTW he stinks.
Meyers is disturbing in all possible ways. His Moses sandals are unnecessary, he loves short shorts, and he is a terrible teacher. Period. This class is unbelievably hard. AVOID.
Where do I even start with Professor Myers? He does not know how to teach math to students. He is very smart, but that doesn't always translate over to being a good professor. LOTS of homework, tests are quite difficult, and the online hw is frustrating. Avoid this class at all costs. Get to know your TAs who will be such a huge help.
Dr Myers is obviously a smart guy. He has been teaching at UH since the 70s I think, but sadly he cant teach. He does not enunciate and his explanations are confusing. His exams are difficult and he likes to put problems on his exams that arent on his study guides. Overall stay away if you havent taken any calc before. Nice guy but eccentric.
Mr. Myers class setup is confusing he is not helpful will get mad and tell you to go on the website it''s hard to staying on top of your assignments which include so much material not covered in class. Your T.A. and study emporium will save you
Meyer's class set up was the worst. Syllabus on his website -very convoluted & unorganized. No talking allowed in lecture since its "one long iclicker quiz." Only gives you 10-15 seconds to answer the iclickers. Exams taken outside class time. Need to take weekly gateway tests until you pass with 78 or else you can't pass the course.. Just don't.
Terrible lectures where you can't talk and more homework than all my other classes combined. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
There is WAY too much work for this class.. all of my time goes into homework and studying for this class and who knows if I'll even pass. Try to avoid getting him if you can!!
This class was really easy... Go to class and do the iClicker and you'll pass with an A.
You have to pass the gateway within the first month or so of the semester to be able to pass the class and about half of the section dropped because they couldn't pass. If you do the homework, go to lecture and discussion, and pass the gateway, you'll pass. Somewhat of a high workload. 2 worksheets and 3 online assignments due in 1 week.
THE BEST MATH TEACHER I'VE *EVER*HAD. He puts effort into the course&lot of work,do it and you WILL understand. tons of practice&feedback inout of class. Courses are designed for LONG TERM math BUILDING,COMPREHENSION&SUCCESS. Great lectures break it down better than the book. experiencedskilled teacher. Amazing TA's too. do the work,be a genius!
Oh come on... everyone deserves a chili pepper.
DO NOT TAKE DR. MYERS' CLASS. Hard to understand. Doesn't allow you to ask questions during lecture. He makes his tests harder than the material he teaches. Lots of homework. You have to come to class because he does iClicker questions for attendance. Only plus side is that he is very smart and gets excited about what he's teaching.
Be prepared to watch your 100+ class dwindle down to the single digits through the semester.
Where to begin with Myers? His notes are confusing without his commentary, lectures are confusing and fast-paced, homework is extremely tough, exams are incredibly difficult. Although he's very knowledgeable, he makes the class almost impossible to pass. Take it from the other teachers. Just avoid Myers' 140 class like the plague.
Considering most professors DO NOT MAKE LECTURES & DO NOT POST THEM ONLINE & rely only on the book AS THE MAIN RESOURCE & DO NOT PROVIDE EXTRA RESOURCES or an IN CLASS OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE PROBLEMS AND ASK QUESTIONS & DO NOT GRADE ON A CURVE, ENSURING THAT MORE THAN 70% OF THE CLASS PASSES, I believe Myers is one of the BEST.
Tries to be funny, and he has a kind personality. He's willing to help as long as you're willing to ask. So ask! He responds fairly quickly to emails, but don't count on those. Lectures include slides with paragraphs of information--most of it unnecessary. Classmates are ranked. You must have strong algebra & trig skills to ace this class.
He talks very softly, is difficult to understand, skips many steps when teaching math processes, his tests contain much more difficult material than his homework, and even makes the most basic math concepts sound hard. You really have to stay on top of it if you want to pass his class and don't skip because participation is mandatory.
It felt like Professor Myers did not care for his students. There are iClicker quizzes during every lecture class. His tests are harder than what is on the homework. It was way too much homework and classwork that was expected to complete. I would not suggest him to a friend. You literally have to dedicate most of your time to this class.
DONT TAKE MEYERS. He makes you take a gateway test and if you dont get 5664 on it you cant get better than a C-, which is idiotic. (basically 50% of your grade dependent on this one test.)
A LOT OF WORK! Don't buy the book you don't need it. Def. need to pass the gateway exam to get any grade higher than a C- in the class. Do the work, go to class and pray you have a TA that is good at explaining!
Literally have assignments due left and right. First you have the lecture where you take notes and have to participate in iclicker quizzes. Then in lab, you got classwork to turn in, and homework. And not to mention webassign. Oh. and you have like 4 exams. No calculators. Bruh
Do not take Myers unless he's the only professor left to teach! Attendance is taken with an iClicker, but it's useless if you select the incorrect answer. Like another review noted, hw is due left & right via webassign or in-class. Calculators cannot be used on tests.
He's horrible. Doesn't explain anything at all. If you don't already know the material, in which case there's no point in taking the class, then tutors are MANDITORY. Worst professor I've had at UH Manoa and i'm a senior
He gives an insane amount of homework. He gives study guides for the tests, but the tests are way harder than the sample problems he gives you. He curves the grades, so you don't need to do well on every single test in order to get an A.
His class was tough not gonna lie. His lectures are long and participation matters but doing the practice examples along with him on the lectures does help. The gateway exam is hard but necessary to get better than a C. Online tests are tough because no partial credit. Test curves are crazy good though. Lots of homework online and paper.
Professor Myers is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Be sure to practice solving problems or you will forget how to solve them. It seems easy on his lectures, but when you do it yourself you do not know what to do because 1) you did not listen very carefully 2) you did not do your own homework 3) late in class. If you don't understand, ask.
Absolutely HATE his class. The Gateway exam is ridiculous! You buy the book for the code and when you wanna use the book, its of no help because he doesn't teach by the book. Its completely off of what he knows. He has a lab and a lecture which obviously means he doesn't teach well and needs TA's to teach for him. WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!
This class is a LOT of homework. There is recitation and lecture. If you miss class you will not know what you are doing. Problems in class are explained well, but "text book" (written by Myers) is extremely confusing. Practice exams are given but actual is much harder. There is a gateway you MUST pass mid semester to succeed in class.
Awful.
one of the worst professors i have ever had. he doesnt show any care for his students, & asking him for help only results in making you look stupid. for a precalculus class, i wasnt expecting it to be so hard or require so much work. he has this "gateway" exam that you HAVE to pass in order to pass the class, and its on material he doesnt teach.
This was the first math class I took at UH Manoa, and I got him in my discussion class. He goes over the things very fast, so there's no time to write down notes. Also, beware, he has a soft voice and I couldn't make out what he said most of the time. When I tried asking for help, he did not seem too happy. If you have the choice, choose another!
The TAs teach the class and Prof Myers just sets up the lectures and discussion periods so you better hope you get a good TA. Lots of homework but most of it is easy and straight forward
lecture problems much easier than hw problems, test problems harder than hw problems
This Professor is terrible! I am very good in Math, but I have never understood Math after trying to sit in his class. I hate this professor, and I hope you don't get this professor. Awful!
I hate this professor so much.
Dale has another professor (who is too smart to be teaching Math 140) teach the lectures and TAs to run the discussion. On a day that the other professor was absent, Dale taught the class, and nothing of what he said was getting through. The exams are harder than the homework and classwork combined. Take regular Calc instead.
His reviews for the midterm exams barely help at all with the exams and some of the material on the exam doesn't match with the things we learn in class and/or discussion. The rare times where he is in the discussions, he only helps some people with the classwork and the others are barely given help.
Dale is very irresponsible and doesn't meet up to his own expectations including others.
If you want to get a good grade in the class I suggest you go to the exam reviews before the test and go in to see help. The web hw is sometimes confusing and wants answers that we wont be using on the test. There is this gateway exam that you have to pass in order to pass the class, or else he will tell you to drop the class.
This class has so much homework that its hard to remember everything. Tons of webassign homework, in class work, homework, and iClicker quizzes. Grades are determined by a ranking system. Exams are often much harder than the practice exams or lectures. You also have to pass a gateway exam, if you don't the best you can get is a C- in the class.
This class was absolutely insane. You have homework due just about every day of the week. Homework is due both online and in the discussion periods. The tests are crazy hard compared to what you do in class and in homework. Gateway exam (which determines if you pass the class or not) is very tough too. Avoid this teacher if can.
MATH140 was a TERRIBLE class. AVOID IF CAN! Take anything else but this class! He is very old school about his teaching and grading. Kind and professional if you actually chat to him, and he taught decently during recitations (depending on your TA's qualifications...). Otherwise this class if difficult and his grading is not kind.
MATH140 was a TERRIBLE class. AVOID IF CAN! Take anything else but this class! His grading system is based on your lab classes so beware. Other students in other labs might get the same grade as you but when he curves the grade it will all be different. I had a B- in this class and when it was time to grade I dropped down to a D+.
I would avoid this class if you can. Tons of HW and stuff to do online which are all for a grade. Exam is harder than regular HW or practice problems. Final? it was the hardest exam I have ever taken. I couldn't even answer all of them. TA was really nice.
This professor makes the simplest math class a struggle to learn. The lectures are basically explaining how to solve one problem and doesn't lecture at all the details about a concept. Some online problems need to be exactly a certain answer or else you won't get credit. This class will unnecessarily leave you stressed and upset. Avoid at all cost.
Dale needs to relax
If you do well in the class, he may offer you to tutor, which give you extra cash if needed. Also, doing well in his class lets you skip his lectures as he usually just gives you the classwork to do on your own. Basically, if you're independent he lets you be independent
MATH140 with this professor is a struggle. Lots of homework and exams much harder than the practice. However, attending lectures and using resources like unstuckstudy can help manage the workload. Not the most enjoyable class, but doable with dedication.
Lazy and difficult professor to deal with
He's a nice a guy, however not a great professor. You're mostly teaching yourself in this class, and you always have to attend it for classwork. You watch videos that he records and posts to the website. I take his class online, and never have I been bad at math until I took his class.
