great teacher...cares about his students and easy to understand
Great professor. Long tenure at Citrus and is the BEST teacher there. Loves his job and it shows in his outstanding classroom environment. Highly recommended for any English class.
Salwak has brought Shakespeare alive for me in a way that no other teacher could or did. His passion for the subject is obvious. His mastery of the material is inspiring. I've had Salwak for other classes. If he's teaching it, take it! He could be teaching at any university he chose. How fortunate all of us are to have him teaching at Citrus.
Dr. Salwak has made me love English more than before. This is a teacher that knows what he's teaching. Always come prepared to class and I always looked forward to listening to his lectures on Shakesp. Even though I've been in his other English classes, every semester is different and just being there gives me great pleasure. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Salwak is one of the best teachers i have ever had. He relates literature to people's lives. His discussions are deep not empty headed. He portrays great wisdom and knowledge and yet is still humble. One can tell that Dr. Salwak teaches to the best of his ability and shows great care for his students.
Dr. Salwak's class is the most stimulating, most comprehensive, most challenging and therefore most worthwhile of any class I have taken in my 3 years in college -- and I'm not even an English major! What separates him from others is that he is a natural-born teacher whose great gifts he uses to benefit all of his students without any hint of ego.
He is a great professer. He is very helpful and guides you through the class. Overall a wondeful class
Dr. Salwak is one of my all-time favorite professors!
The most amazing teacher I have ever had. Never criticized anyones work no matter how bad it was. Made you look at life and realize , when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.
Awesome professor, you will A's this class if you listen to all his lectures.
Favorite Professor. Helped Make Children's Literature Come Alive. Highly Recommend. Be Alert! In Class Notes Are Super Important. Worth Every Minute Of Your Time Though.
Never have I attended a more stimulating class that makes such good use of every period. This is a demanding class and therefore worth every second of effort I put into it. I came away knowing so much about Shakespeare and his world and myself. i rate Salwak very highly. He knows what he is talking about and teaches with university expectations.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. Salwak. He is professional, always fully prepared, and a brilliant speaker. The hour flies by. Amazing! He expects the most of his students and he gets it. Everyone is involved in the material and discussions. We do our best because Dr. Salwak expects us to and because he always does his best. Brilliant.
My entire family recommends this guy. Myself, my dad, mom, and my mom's parents took him and loved him. Great speaker and incredibly devoted to his students. While I personally dont like the subject, I loved the way he taught it.
I have taken 3 classes with Prof. Salwak. He could be teaching anywhere in the world. He's that good. Always fresh with the material, challenging, up=to-date and on top of the research. We read and discussed 7 Shakespeare plays, 40 sonnets, and 3 biographies on the playwright. Everybody was on fire for the subject-- because of Salwak's example.
Salwak is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He is incredibly interesting, full of life lessons, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minutes of his class. I highly recommend him for any class. Take him just to have him as your teacher!! then google him...
Excellent teaching abilities.
Dr.Salwak is a great teacher. He is passionate about his work, and it is obvious that he dedicates a lot of time in preparing his lessons. There is a lot of reading involved, but you will definitely learn a lot! Take him

It's been a joy having Dr. Salwak as my professor. Anyone would be lucky to taught by him.
I just saw on Amazon that Salwak's new book, TEACHING LIFE: LETTERS FROM A LIFE IN LITERATURE, will be published in April. I have taken every class he teaches, and if his book is as good as his classes - it will be great. Whether or not you've had him for a teacher, order his book and you'll see what I mean when I say he is brilliant in class.
I have learned more about literature and writing essays during this one semester from Salwak than I learned from 4 yrs. in high school. Every hour of class was worth attending. Great class - great discussions! Oh, I looked up his new book - TEACHING LIFE - and ordered a copy! (Amazon.com)
Have you read the description of TEACHING LIFE on Amazon.com and reviews? WOW! But I'm not surprised. It sounds consistent with the gentleman I've studied under in three different classes.
I have had Prof. Salwak for 3 classes and have to say each one was top of the line. Every day when he walked into class I got the feeling that something important was going to happen. And it did! You can't go wrong taking him. He is incredibly well-read and well-prepared, knows how to connect with his students, and cares about his art. Take him!
Brilliant teacher in every aspect. Respects every student as an individual, is always exceptionally well-prepared, and is refreshingly objective in this potentially minefield of a course (Lit. of the Bible). I've learned an extraordinary amount about the Bible. Maintains university expectations in the classroom and assignments and GETS RESULTS!
I am attending the 2008 summer session of his Literature of the Bible (English 298). It is intense, focused, organized, and full of enriching insights every single day. Stay on top of the reading, take good notes, ask questions, and you'll get more from the experience than you can imagine. Highly recommended in every respect!
I took Salwak's summer '08 Children's Literature class and I must say I learned A LOT in 6 weeks. He gave an insightful look to stories I once & never got a chance to read as a child from an adult's perspective. He's always there to answer questions in person or via e-mail. I highly recommend for anyone to take his class! Just be prepared to read!
Good Teacher. Keep up with your notes. Ask questions when you don't understand and you'll be ok.
Superb in clarity, organization, and connecting with the students. In terms of depth and mastery of the material, I felt as if I were sitting in a university class. Highly recommended. Be prepared to read a lot, take good notes, and ask questions. You'll not be disappointed. Best teacher I've ever had.
Honeslty, this is DEFINITLY one of THEE best teachers at Citrus College! not only did you learn something new about english but something new about life. He's is so great and I 110% recommend him to ANYONE and EVERYONE! He doesn't believe in scantrons...he is not intrested in an a b or c answers, but in what you have to say not alot of profs do tha
From the first day in class I knew this was the prof. for me. He's respectful, very well-prepared, organized, and focused. He wants us to understand and goes out of his way to make sure we do. He has a very clear vision for the class and we feel a profound part of that vision. I feel SO fortunate to be in this class!
I am enrolled in Lit. of the Bible and must say this is the best class on the subject I've ever attended. Salwak is so thorough, so well-organized, and so passionate about his subject that one would have to be a dunce not to do well in this class. He gives us every reason and motivation to succeed. This is my first time reading the Bible.
One of the best professors ever! the text has absolute authority in his class and he doesnt try to pass personal opinions as truth. showing up to class is a delight which is good because as long as you show up everyday and listen youre set. reading the material is essential but you actually want to because youre only cheating yourself if you dont
Salwak is one of the most brilliant, wisest, caring professors I've had. His whole policy is, "You are not in competition with the class: only with yourself." He will grade you based on what your capabilities are, and you will grow intellectually. You will not be disappointed in ANY of Salwak's classes (I've had him for 2).
Dr.Salwak is an amazing teacher. I am sad the class is over. He give 100 percent to the class and he has been teaching it for decades. I recommend this class even if you've never picked up a bible. Keep up with your journal entries and take good notes! Tests are open book and you can use your notes.
Very nice teacher, he focuses on the understanding of the subject matters. This class is for those who wish to expand their minds, and cover the hidden subtexts are of each of the books talked about. Also I would say that you should bring up something to discuss each day, it will help you in your growth.
A wonderful teacher! Besides being brilliant his class is very straight forward. He doesn't give you lots of busy work; just expects you to read and discuss. One of the greatest professors I have ever had
Great teacher! Has lots of insight. Lets the students do a lot of discussion but makes sure to cover important aspects of the text. Was rarely ever late and always let you know before hand that there wasn't going to be class.
Each day Prof. Salwak overwhelms us with his vast love and understanding of beautifully written literature - from Jane Austen through the Romantics to T.S.Eliot. Each day I come away inspired by how he approaches each book. For this and much more, I am immensely grateful to be in his class.
Superb in presentation, connection with students, clarity, organization, fairness. Keep up with the reading, take good notes, participate in discussion. Salwak has earned the respect of everyone, and he receivesd it. He is one of the most respected men in education. If you are serious aout your education, take him.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! He definitly knows what he's talking about- He's written a few books and offers great insight into everything we read about. His knowledge of English is immense and astounding. If you love english, you will love his vast knowledge of the subject, as well as his great experiences. Take him- You won't regret it!
I'm currently taking his 251 - English Lit. from Beowulf through Samuel Johnson. I once thought these old texts and writers were brittle and forgettable, but Salwak has a unique way of bringing them alive no matter how far back they go. Vibrant, relevant, astonishing perception - that's what this professor and his class mean to me.
I took him for Shakespeare and Intro to Eng. Lit. He's one of my favorite professors so far, because he respects the students' time, and assumes the best of them. However, the last poster is somewhat correct. While he tries to mask his own bias, they are sometimes translucent in many of his lectures. But he's teaching lit that is just as biased.
The previous commentators on bias say a lot more about themselves than the class. I attended the same class - and not once did I perceive any bias except his bias in favor of the study of literature, the importance of education, and his respect for students. Christian? Republican? How someone could get this from what he says is beyond me.
Salwak's teachings have completely transformed the way I percieve life and it's infinite wonders and I know that there is so much more that I can learn from him. I am grateful so much for his time and the dedication he gives to each of his students.
I thought English was boring but Prof. Salwak made it come to life. He is extremely reasonable on what expects on his 3 essays and 1 research paper and will help you even if you need help in developing your essay. My attention was captured for the whole 1.5 hour class which has never been done. Amazing to listen to because of his insights.
The student's comments from 4/21 are inaccurate. I find Salwak to be totally focused on text. Only time he pulls from personal experience is to clarify a point. I too am an Engl major, and I have learned more about the subject than I could have imagined. His knowledge of the subject is voluminous. Take him if you want to learn!
Salwak is one of the most intelligent and useful critics teaching and writing today (just read any of his 24 published books). How refreshing that Salwak is biased in favor of literature. He has strong convictions, knows what he's talking about, and he is always open to class discussions. Read, review your class notes daily, participate!
I know it's silly season, but these arguments about Salwak's bias are pretty weak. Of course he's biased; if he weren't, why would he be teaching? He is strongly biased in favor of literature and the authors we study; he is strongly biased in favor of living fully, of making one's education a lifetime journey. Take him. You won't regret it.
Some students need to pull themselves away from the safety of ipods and texting - and test in the classroom what they do know and consider what they don't. Salwak engages his students at a very deep level. He has time only for the best books and best minds. That's why his classes are always packed - and why no one drops.
Hey, what's with all this prattle about bias? Show me a teacher unbiased about the subject and I'll show you a dull class. Salwsk has strong convictions. You don't have to accept everything. He makes that point first day. He's testing what we know. The class is not about him but the text. Some students forget that or never hear it.
Salwak brings Shakespeare alive for me. We learn about the man, the times, and his art. I've never been in a class where the discussions are more vibrant and alive. Everyone participates. Probing, thoughtful, articulate, Salwak always comes exceptionally well-prepared. He knows the material inside and out. Great experience.
Salwak is refreshingly candid. He sprinkles every discussion with an amazing variety of quotes from an amazing variety of sources - writers, musicians, philosophers, etc. All of this brings the subject alive for his students. Every day I leave feeling as if he is talkjing just to me. I think all of the students feel this.
Salwak is extremely knowledgeable. Even though he repeats some of the stories that he tells to his students, he is still sincere. Most of all, he is a magician. How cool is that?
I enjoyed this class. I am a transferring english major and was really exposed to material that I havent read. There is a lot of poetry and we read 2 novels. His tests and quizzes are very straight forward and he has a wonderful passion for what hes teaching.
Salwak electrifies your mind. His mind is gentle and fierce all at once. He brings literature alive in a way I've never experienced before. He doesn't just know it, he knows it (and the authors) from the inside. His students are riveted to the text and and invited to discuss, disagree, explore. His class is text driven. How refreshing!
Children Literature is a very fun class with dr. salwak as the professor. You should take him because hew is extremmely helpful with everything. Therew is never a dull moment in this class.
He is not only the professor of English, he is also the greatest professor of life.Take his class, and try it. you will gain a lot..
Prof. Salwak's elegant speech and provocative mind always surprises and inspires. Every class is a celebration of maturity and wisdom. I can't imagine being anywhere during my college years, and I am kinda sad the semester is over and I have to wait until the fall to take him again. His clarity of vision marks everything he says and does. Take him!
Salwak is a teacher of extraordinary passion, distinctiveness and creativity who speaks with compelling force. Nothing more need be said.
Salwak is extremely wise and helpful. He definitely knows how to enlighten minds. You'll do great if you attend class and do all the work. His class and ways of teaching made me decide on my major.
If a student complains, it's probably because he/she didn't do the reading (of which there is a lot) and expected the professor to summarize it. The best students in Salwak's classes do all of the reading, take detailed notes, ask questions, and stay involved - and STUDY! Anything less and you probably don't deserve this wonderful professor.
I've had Salwak for four classes. Reading some of the reviews on this page, I'm amazed at some of the complaints students make. Obviously they don't realize how lucky they are to be in his classes. My guess is that students who complain just aren't doing the work. His classes are not easy; they test your self-discipline. Worth every minute!
he's a great teacher! loves to get students involved!! he makes you think for yourself--in other words, he wants to know your opinions rather then just hear your own. it was a great class over all!
Salwak is a great and a good man, and above all a man of common sense. He is kind and refined, never self-important or pompous. One of a kind.
If the first three weeks of this semester are any indication of what's to come,I can't wait. I've learned more in these 3 weeks than I learn in a semester in most classes. Salwak's lectures are phenomenally powerful, and he involves everyone in discussions. He has an uncanny gift for bringing the literature alive.
An amazing instructor with so much to offer a students learning experience if you are willing to fall in love with the text. I had him for 2 classes and it was the best experience I have ever had with an instructor. Do the reading, do the work and you will be rewarded for good work.
great guy great teacher! im going to take him again for critical thinkimg.
This class is easy. He is such a humble guy. He really makes you want to learn the material. He's very organized & straight forward. i respect the guy and recommend taking his class.
Salwak's is the most exhilarating classroom you'll ever enter. How nice to return to a time when the teacher's main role was as an enthusiasdt, opening up the glories of the written word for the reader. Every one of his lectures is polished and useful; his comments on papers are elegant and insightful. An absolute joy.
More of a spiritual/philosophical counselor than a professor. Salwak is the epitome of what a professor should be. He grabs your attention and logs into your passion. He will blow your mind and build new perspectives on life, religion, love, and philosophy no matter what course of his you take. I STRONGLY recommend any one of his courses.
What a remarkable professor! I am not an English major but I am blown away by the breadth and depth of Salwak's teaching. I dare anyone to take any of his classes and see the subject, or themselves, the same way. His discussion of literature and the craft of writing is lucid and deeply compelling.
This professor is awesome! He has such a passion for Literature, it's incredible. His stories are very entertaining. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Read your material, show up, and take notes and you will do awesome. Most of his tests are open note anyway. Take him! You won't regret it!
i was never good in english but this class was very intresting
Salwak's observations about literature are among the best I have ever heard: deeply knowledgeable, appreciative, and expressed clearly and passionately. The beauty of this class is the maturity of thinking that he expects - and receives! - of all his students. A brilliant and humane class.
Take this class in the summer or winter, it's not hard at all. If you cannot write well then take it in fall/spring. He's such an intelligent man. Such a sweetheart and cares about every student!! This class is cool if you really like literature, if not, then suck it up and just read.
If you are fortunate enough to get a seat in this class, keep it and do the work! Salwak's class is distinguished by moral & intellectual passions that make it entirely absorbing. There is not a superficial sentence in anything he says. What a enjoyable alternative to the increasingly crude, frivolous and slogan-loving culture we inhabit.
He is a very smart man. The first few weeks you will be amazed. However about halfway through you will dread having to show up for class. The work is easy but he is EXCRUCIATINGLY BORING!!!
If the student from November dreads coming to class one wonders why she comes. Her comment reveals much about herself and nothing about the class - which to the open-minded is stimulating, provocative, and challenging. She should realize how fortunate she is to have Salwak as a teacher.
Salwak is never boring. Only a student who can't or won't keep up with the work would say that. His lectures sparkling for their freshness and insights. I look forward to coming to class every day and will profoundly miss coming when the semester ends.
He is the best and easiest teacher i have taken. Ive never looked forward to a class but his. Such an insightful man, interesting, helpful. No hw ever, just three exams and final research paper. Best teacher i have taken yet!
Illuminating discussions, penetrating lectures, fascinating analyses. What more can I say? Anybody who says this is boring doesn't know what he's talking about. Salwak is exceptionally well-prepared and knowledgeable and I look forward to more classes with him.
The most amazing Professor I've had at Citrus. Highly intelligent. Goes out of his way to help students.
I took two classes with Dr Salwak this past semester. I recommend taking him for any and every class that you can. He will change the way that you veiw English and the world as a whole.
Salwak has more to say about how literature is used, and why, and by whom, then any teacher I have ever had. And his lectures on style, on the art of writing and listening, go to the heart of the subject.
take both 101 and 103, and get A, the class is easy. As long as you put effort, you will do well. Salwak is really helpful, and easygoing!
I also took Salwak's 101 and 103 and found them to be the most challenging but at the same time rewarding classes I've taken while here at the college. I didn't find it to be an easy A at all. I worked very hard, every day, to live up to his expectations. Thew class turned me inside out intellectually - and was worth every moment.
I have been a student at the Pennsylvania State University as well as UCLA, and Professor Salwak (A COMMUNITY COLLEGE Professor) is one of, if not THE best Professors I have ever encountered. His genius is in how his classes reach, accommodate, and inspire students of ALL levels; from the most advanced, to the just beginning. Prepare to be amazed.
Salwak is an all around awesome human being, as well as a professor. He's very knowledgeable, and he uses that to further clarify the stories and give more insight to them. He's also very understanding. Make sure to actually read, because he focuses on discussion. As long as you give an honest effort, he'll help you out.
Salwak has accomplished his dreams in life, and yet remains so humble. I aspire to be like him. He is a teacher and writer of the highest order. I don't want to let him go!
My life and my outlook this semester has been dramatically changed for the better because of the stories and novels we have discussed, the essays we have had to write, and the incredibly deep discussions Prof. Salwak has led us through in class. I am so grateful - as I know many of the students are even though they might not speak up.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Shakespeare is not easy, even if you have studied his work for years. Dr. Salwak makes class so much fun, and he applies the material to our lives. I didn't think Shakespeare applied to me; totally does. TAKE IT! Do the work, and listen. Difficult class, but you WILL enjoy it. I guarantee it.
Best Teacher I have EVER had. He makes everything interesting and actually makes you want to go to class. So helpful with absolutely everything. He is the sweetest little man!
Most interesting man on campus. Interested in teaching, learning, living, and having passion for words.
Few can match Salwak in the breadth, depth, and passion for his literary experiences and expertise. He is commanding in his knowledge, deeply moving in his devotion to his students, and the best teacher I have ever - and I mean ever - had.
Salwak is the best prof i've ever had. This class was more of a philosophy class than an Engli one. There are 2 out of class essays, 2 exams, the RS paper + final. Make sure you READ the stories. My only criticism are the 2 plays we read. They were dull and not as interesting as the Robert Frost poems. I wish we could have had more time with Frost.
This class was a challenge, but I was happy getting a B. We had 3 in-class essays, 2 out-class essay, quizzes, and the final research paper. The class was really fun and interesting. His vehement teaching still really made the class enjoyable. You're going to have to take this class to transfer, so might as well get some enjoyment out of it.
Salwak's class in Shakespeare gave me something I've missed in my life - the compassionate guidance of an extraordinarily wise teacher.Every day he drew the profound out of the text in a way that challenged people's lives. Wise, lucid, important, clear, concise - I think of these words when I think of Salwak as my professor.
How one man can know so much about the world? Dr. Salwak often says this of some of his featured writers in many of his classes. Literally, after four classes with him I believe he was unknowingly speaking of himself. A phenominal instructor who will not only enhance your knowledge of literature but he will teach you how to discover your inner best
Probably one of the most inspiring teachers i've ever had. I already love english but he takes it to a whole new level. Take him!! It will be something you will never forget. and if you don't like english, i'm sure you will love it after taking his class.
Absolutely amazing. I've never had an English teacher like him before who's opened up my eyes quite like he did. Make sure to attend his lectures because they're actually quite interesting..he doesn't give out too much work but he is a bit strict on the essays but loves to get his audience involved.
Dr. Salwak is the best English teacher I have ever had. Actually, he is, by far, the best teach that I have ever had. I truly looked forward to sitting in his class because I knew that I was going to learn so much, not only about literature, but also, myself. I am taking more of his classes in the Spring
Truly a mind changing class and a life changing man as your professor. I would recommend this class/professor to anyone, regardless of major. Just keep up with the reading, its worth it!
Professor Salwak is a representative man whom each of us might emulate. In the classroom he is relaxed and spirited in style. In a country that seems to have lost touch with itself, Salwak re-connects us with our past, with our literature, and with our place in the world. To attend his lectures is pure joy.
Great teacher
Salwak is by far one of the best professors I have had. He truly enjoys teaching and will help no matter how stupid you think the question is. He truly wants all of his students to understand the readings. He is always open to discuss and no answer is a wrong answer as long as you can use the text to prove it. TAKE HIM! No one regrets it!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Made Shakespeare so much easier to understand. Very understanding person as well.
Dr. Salwak completely changed my outlook on literature. I didn't realize how much poetries&plays can relate to me and society. You do 2 in-class essays and 2 take home essays, a research paper, & final. If you need help you have to ask him because he will already think you know. it's good though bc it'll prepare you a bit more when going to a univ.
I have taken three classes with Prof Salwak and found each one to be rewarding and challenging. He is extremely well prepared and knows his subjects through and through. He is an extraordinarily intelligent man who easily could teach at any university here or abroad. We are fortunate to have him.
He's by far the best english professor I've had at Citrus College. He's extremely intelligent, helpful and genuinely cares about his students and their well being. I highly recommend him. You'll learn a lot in his classes.
Great instructor. Took online for both English 101 & 103. Very helpful and answers emails fast. I recommend him.
had him for three english classes. by far the best teacher ive had in my enitre school career. his class is easy BECAUSE he is an amazing teacher. never looks down on anyone. has a good heart and really wants everyone to succeed. he will never think your questions are silly and he can always bring a smile to your face.
I have taken three classes with Prof Salwak. His lectures are lucid, stirring, enthusiastic and enlightening. A semester with him will convince you that he has taken his place among the finest teachers of our generation.
If you ever have the chance to enroll in Professor Salwak's class--DO IT! His class discussions help you understand the material and to connect it back to your own life. His classes allowed me to explore my own self, and encouraged me to THINK for myself. Looking back at my time at Citrus, Professor Salwak's classes were my favorite experiences.
One of the best teachers to exist. I looked forward to attending his classes every week and was actually excited to go to school. He is such an intelligent man and so kind hearted. He brings his heart into every discussion. He will enlighten your mind like no one else. Very easy if you take notes and do the reading.
This professor opened my eyes to poetry. if you don't miss his lectures a great grade should be easy. His passion for English is apparent. I thoroughly enjoyed his class
Incredible Professor. There aren't the words to describe how wonderful Dr. Salwak is. He will challenge you to be a better student, & a better person. Take him if u love or hate english. Take him if u feel lost about life in general. He is honest & helpful...and just as I was, you will be sad to have the semester come to an end.
GREAT PROFESSOR! I took Salwaks night class we met one day week from 7-10 pm and I enjoyed each and every lecture, the exams are take home and he expects min. of one page response to each question which isn't bad because you have a week to do the exam. I also very much enjoyed the stories he shared with the class,I have nothing but respect for him
Just took his class online. I thought it would be easy, but it was challenging in a good way! He really challenged me to think critically and I had to work for the grade that I got. He is understanding as I turned in my final late and still did well. There were three essays, one research paper, a midterm exam, and a final exam.
Dr. Slawak HANDS DOWN is the BEST teacher I have ever encountered in all my years of school. He is extremely brilliant and full of vital information you can use in your daily life. I learned a lot about the material and myself! He relates the literary contents to your life. He challenges you to think! I am honored to be in Salwaks class.
Salwak is an inspired teacher. Each day in English 252 he holds his students enthralled by making the literature seem real and important and human. From our discussions and the reading (there's a lot of it!) I have learned more about the development of English literature than in any prior class on the subject. He inspires me to go beyond 100%!
There is an intelligent, deeply felt humanism running through all of Prof. Salwak's lectures and discussions. As his students we want to do our best for him because we trust him.
I LOVE this class because it is surprisingly, wonderfully fresh. Each day I can't wait to see what Salwak does with the readings, what questions he asks, and what answers he suggests. He is a seasoned pro - utterly charming, thoughtful, and never predictable.
May I just say that Professor Salwak is truly an extraordinary teacher. He has a real passion for what he teaches and that passion becomes clear in every one of his lectures. The sheer power of his spoken words is amazing.
Salwak is a wonderful professor. There are resonances in everything he says. His classes are so intellectually alive as he re-evaluates the classics of literature. He respects his students and expects the most from them. He could be teaching at any university.
Salwak is the most professional instructor I had at Citrus. The class discussions are very thought provoking and he is a very intelligent man. I loved that there is no group work. I feel very privileged to have been Dr. Salwak's student and cannot recommend taking his class enough!
Have had Salwak for english 103 and this past semester for literature of the bible. The bible class was the best class I've ever taken. I learned so much about the old testament. I highly recommend taking Salwak for at least one class. You won't regret it. Planning to take him for Into to Shakespheare before I transfer
Great class, great and professional instructor. Does not put up with talking or fooling around in class, which at Citrus I found to be a rarity among the instructors. Had complete control of the classroom and in a nice way. Some questions were unclear on test, but he challenges you to be specific in your answers as well.Take his classes if you can!
He is a well rounded professor and extremely intelligent. English can be a little boring. I felt like I learned so much from him though.
Dr. Salwak is brilliant. He challenges you in a way that other professors at Citrus don't. He makes you question everything and want to learn more. I would have taken his class for fun! If you have the choice to have Salwak as a professor I would not hesitate.
Mr. Salwak is by far the BEST teacher at Citrus. He doesn't give out homework, if you need help, he will definitely take time to help you. The exams are open book and notes. However, the exams can be quite tricky. All you have to do is just go to class, take notes and become inspired.
I love him!! I hope tht in the future I will b able 2 take his Bible Lit. class! I rlly loved&enjoyed his eng. 101 class! I found him so inspiring&I was 1 who didn't care much for eng. but he made it fun&interesting ! He makes u think outside the box&is very helpful w the ideas u originally come up w.. He is such an intelligent man! Smart &witty :)
Extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He really cares about individual students and will gladly answer questions and give feedback and suggestions. I normally hate writing, but he actually enhanced my appreciation for it a bit. Lectures are always interesting, and he gives a clear idea of what to do for the writing assignments.
Easily best teacher I've ever had. He offered so much useful insight & advice that would be applicable to anyone's life. He is very thorough with his lectures. I never got under an A on anything. There are three essays and a research paper, all super easy. Two tests as well but no homework besides reading. He changed my life honestly.
Dr. Salwak is a highly-respected and incredibly inspirational professor. His classes were never easy but I learned more in his classes than I ever did in any other English course. Salwak inspired me to major in English and become an educator.
My third class with him. It was a pleasure having him for the English classes. He is highly respected among faculty and students. For the Shakespeare class we read 6 plays and had 6 packets to answer questions from the play. There was a midterm, a take home exam, final, and research paper. The exams are all written. Amazing professor. Will miss him
Took his English 101 class over the summer. It was a bit tricky to get my essays just right, but he gave great feedback on what I was doing wrong. I passed with an A and worked hard for it. He treats his students with respect and wants you to do your best. He's the kind of professor that pushes you to become a better writer and think critically.
His lectures were philosophical and amazing to hear. I loved every moment in his class. He assigns little work and gives you the tools you need to succeed, but you need to read and attend class to get the information you need for the exams. I'd recommend him to everyone that wants a truly amazing professor during their journey through college.
His summer DE class more than lived up to my expectations. For each essay (there were three) he gave detailed feedback on my style, mechanics, content and organization. He guided us through every step of the research paper. He respects his students, keeps the class assignment lively and challenging, and never lowers standards. Highly recommended!
TAKE HIM! Salwak is absolutely amazing - the best teacher i've ever had at Citrus. Do your work, listen to the lectures (which are so enthralling it's not hard to do), and take good notes for the tests (which are open note). He's brilliant and wonderful. About 6 hours of homework a week. He's extremely knowledgable but he's so humble about it.
Never, in all my years of education, have I had a professor like Salwak. He is professional to his fingertips - always well-prepared, always inspirational, always connected with his students. His helpful, constructive comments on my papers offer the most detail I have ever received from a teacher. His lectures are filled with wisdom and insights.
Professor Salwak's wide-ranging sensibility, cultural breadth, and gracious style brings me back class after class. I am an English major, because of his example, and focusing on the Renaissance, again because of his example. He teaches Shakespeare from the inside, out - and leaves my classmates and me amazed by his intelligence and clarity.
Professor Salwak is one of those standout professors a student gets two or three times in an academic career, if they're lucky. He is passionate about learning and literature, and his lectures are inspiring and thought-provoking. Truly a pleasure to be in his class. 100% would recommend. Class is discussion based, so make sure you keep up.
This professor helps me to write well on my essays and such an amazing professor. Thank you Dr. Salwak!
I took Professor Salwak for Eng 101 and 103. He is the best professor Ive ever had. His lectures are so deep, motivating and it really seems like he fully cares about his students. I started to like reading literature and writing papers by taking his class. How does a man know so much?
Dr. Salwak is such an amazing professor. He is truly inspirational. His lectures are amazing and can get pretty deep. He teaches the material with a life lesson embedded in it. Gives great feed back and the essays are given back to you in short amount of time. Truly cares about students. If you have a chance to take him, take him!
He's nice and always there for you. NO homework and quizzes will be giving.
taking him online for spring. 3 essays and 1 research paper (min 7 pgs) w/ weekly discussion boards. Read the material and there is no reason you should not pass ( 4 weeks left in the semester and I have an A). Always easy to get a hold of, he replies quickly to email, gives great feedback.
What can I say about Prof. Salwak that hasn't already been said? Incisive, provocative, eloquent: his classes are treasured by repeat students and by those who are encountering him for the first time. Everything he teaches - from Shakespeare to English literature to Lit. of the Bible to advanced rhetoric - comes alive in new, fresh ways. Take him!
Professor Salwak is poised, passionate, and sure-voiced. Here is someone who teaches from inside the material - something he talks about in class - and does so with great believability. His classes are the most exhilarating you'll ever enter. Technology never interferes as a crutch. It's the professor, the text, the students and a white board!
Without any question... the best!
Wonderfully engaging, illuminating, surprising in his insights into literature, and solid in the best of scholarship. I would take any class he teaches. His courses are life-transforming; his mastery of the subjects he teaches is inspiring and genuine. Among the best I have ever had in my academic career. Truly a master teacher.
Professor Salwak has given me an appreciation for 19th and 20th century English poetry and explained it with stunning detail and clarity from Blake, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth, Coleridge to Eliot, Pound, Auden, Yeats, Larkin, Hopkins and so many more. Each day I came away filled with gratitude for his generous spirit and wisdom.
I have never had a professor who captures, so succinctly and professionally, the essentials in Shakespeare better than does Dr. Salwak. He shows us convincingly why the bard's work is as right for us today as it was when it was first performed in the l7th century. He is a classic professor teaching a classic writer without compromise. The best.
Really great professor. He cares about students and gives good feedback on how to improve a paper. Expect a lot of reading every week.
Professor Salwak could be teaching at any university in the world. We are so fortunate to have him here. He exemplifies everything that one could hope for from a master teacher. He is not tied down by the albatross of technology. He establishes a connection with each student early-on, focuses on the text, and always, always is well prepared.
Professor Salwak's is the most exhilarating classroom you'll ever enter. He speaks elegantly, insightfully, and clearly about very complex literary matters. His insights into the process of writing are stimulating and informative, always illuminating and witty. He teaches as one on the inside of the material as a literary scholar and a writer.
What a nice professor! I was so scared for Eng class because I just learned english about 4 years ago, so I have a lot of problem about grammar and spelling. However, Professor Salwak is not a tough grader. he was tolerant to ESL student. Try your best and hardworking, you can get A ! I learned a lot from his class, he is my favorite professor!
All the buzz of Dr. Salwak is true. His passion transcends even through his DE course. He gives GREAT feedback on papers, clear instructions, good topics, and is fair with his grading criteria. 3 essays, 1 research paper, weekly discussion board posts. Expect to read a bit too, however, nothing overwhelming. I will def take him for ENG103!
Dr. Salwak is such an amazing professor. 3 essays and 1 research paper. I took his Monday class from 7-10 and he ALWAYS made class so interesting. I would stay mid class and usually leave for the other half. All of his assignments were clear. He really cares about his students and is the sweetest man ever and also funny!
Professor Salwak's lectures are wonderfully conceived and executed, drawing upon a lifetime of reading and writing and 43 years of teaching. Original and enlightening. Casts fresh light on the many subjects he teaches.
Took DE Summer, assigned 5 discussion boards, 3 exams and 1 research paper with plenty of time to complete research paper in a 6 week course. The assigned reading material was interesting (drama material is on youtube). I wish I had taken his traditional class I can imagine the lectures being outstanding. His response time to all emails was quick.
Excellent professor with extremely fast responses to emails. I took online over the summer 2016 semester and it was really easy. Only two papers and a research paper with a weekly discussion board post. I'm planning on taking him for English 103 as well. Wonderful professor and I highly recommend.
Professor Salwak's lectures are enthralling, lucid, and honest. His assignments are challenging but fair. He expects the best from his students - and gets it. I worked very hard to prepare for class and complete the assignments and it was all worthwhile. Salwak is in every respect a living example of greatness: humble and wise and engaging.
Everyday Prof. Salwak challenges us with profound insights as he covers amazingly broad sweeps of literary history while focusing on specific gems of literature. Everything about his class - his demeanor, his rigor, his expectations - suggests the best of university experiences. You will come away richer for the experience. Highly recommended.
Salwak belongs in the line of great professors. Any serious student of literature and critical understanding should take him. There isn't a dull thought in anything he says, nor a pointless observation or judgment. His lectures are brilliant. He demonstrates a shrewd understanding of human relationships in works of literature.
He has a certain expectation of your writing. 3 essays, 1 midterm, and 1 final. He's really helpful and understanding. Very inspirational guy.
This guy never have enough !! like you can go to the writing center, check with my old professors my essays and hes never happy !! Hes a good teacher that gives you feedback in each essay, if you took an easy class before him its going to be hard this class for you , also he reply the emails back in a way that make you feel stupid .
This was my first DE class and I enjoyed every minute of it. There was a lot of reading, of course, but his writing assignments were reasonable (two analytical essays, research paper, and six discussion posts). He responds immediately to messages and gives detailed and very helpful advice. Highly recommended. Brilliant in every respect.
I am currently enrolled in Prof Salwak's Critical Thinking class, 103, and feel inspired from the first day. He teaches with the highest of standards and expectations, shows extraordinary respect for and interest in his students as individuals, and displays a mastery of his material. I look forward to coming to class every day!
I have learned so much from Prof. Salwak that wasnt on his syllabus, and that Ive come to appreciate more powerfully with each passing week. Salwak teaches as one who is inside the material; he has lived it, as if he knows each author from Shakespeare through Milton through Eliot personally. He is a font of wisdom. I can't wait for each class.
I have personally admired Professor Salwak and his skills and wisdom for many years. His deep love for the subjects he teaches shows in everything he does. No matter your major, take him. He will change your life for the better.
I would take any class that Prof. Salwak teaches. Everything he speaks of is imbued with sensitivity, extraordinary imaginative power, and an eloquence that keeps his students enthralled. As a published author himself, he teaches from experience, not just theory. His advice is right on target. He inspires all of us to do our very best - always.
I look forward to coming to class each day. This is a master teacher - fully in command of his material, up-to-date, able to bring to life any writer and his/her work under discussion. He connects with each student regardless of their academic level. Everyone leaves his class changed for the better. The best.
My high school experience was abysmal. Prof. Salwak inspired me academically. The first day he said to everyone, "Show me how smart you are." Nobody, ever, had said that to me; those were magic and opened my mind and belief in myself. He challenged us intellectually every day with amazing lectures and discussions. No technology: how refreshing!
Salwak is Yoda. What a brilliant man Salwak is. I loved his class. I learned so much about life, literature, and myself. Please take him while your at Citrus, you will go in a boy and leave a man!
I took Salwak for 101 and just finished his 103 class and he is the most inspirational teacher I've ever had by far. His lectures are entertaining and thought provoking. He takes old literature and makes applicable to every day life. He's brilliant and highly charismatic. Take him, you will love the class from the first day to the last day.
Prof. Salwak's voice is powerful and necessary in this era of declining civility, literary values, and angst. Every class is an event. I've given much thought to the three courses I've taken with him. They were life-changing, soulful, and everything and more that one would hope for in a higher education. Expect to work hard - and enjoy every minute
Professor Salwak is so down to earth and really one of the sweetest professors out there. He's so passionate about everything he teaches in English and is really helpful. He's also funny and inspirational. If English isn't your best subject I'd take him because he really helps and guides you. I recommend 100%
Prof. Salwak's illuminating close readings of the plays of Shakespeare are compelling and thought-provoking. Salwak's gifts all come together here: wisdom, sheer intelligence, immense learning. He is my hero!
I enjoyed each class because Professor Salwak had the most amazing lectures! It made it more interesting when I had a different perspective on his way of looking at the world with his own knowledge to teach. It makes you think about the impact on each situation and how there is a greater cause and effect. He is such a nice man and very sweet!!
How personally rewarding it is to finally sit in a class where we as students are not under the albatross of technology! It's just us, the text, the board, and Salwak. How personal. How refreshing. How illuminating. Salwak gives 110% of himself into everything he tackles. His lectures and discussions push the boundaries of intellectual growth. Wow!
I took his summer online class and it was easier than I thought. There is a lot of readings, but if you spread your time wisely you should be fine. There are weekly discussion posts, two exams(based on readings from the book) and a research paper. He gives good feedback and will answer any questions you have.
I have had Dr. Salwak for four classes - three traditional and one DE. I would take him for anything. Superior in every respect. If you get into one of his classes, make the most of the opportunity. Work hard, give 100%, and he'll do the same for you. You'll come away steeped in the classics of literature and confident.
I will never forget Prof. Salwak's compassion and help. At an extremely difficult time in my life, when I was considering dropping out of college, he encouraged me to continue and believed in my potential for graduate studies. He never gave upon me and therefore I never gave up on myself.
Prof salwak teach lots of things in his english class, amazing prof and give good feedback
The best ENGL professor I've ever meet, also a fantastic gentleman.
This is a great class along with a great professor. Get really in depth with literature and class participation through Canvas. He gives great feedback and gives great guidance. English is one of my favorite subjects so it helped to have a supportive professor. Three 2 to 3 paper exams with the final exam being 5 to 7 pages. Overall easy.
In one word: superb. In six words: the best professor I've ever had. In two words: take him. He could be teaching at any university in the world. How fortunate we are to have him here.
If you struggle with writing essays then don't take this class if it's a half semester class, all you do is essays back to back, discussions, and reading.
An exceptional class, though online. The professor is engaged, clear, and very helpful.
I have had this professor for both traditional and DE classes. There aren't enough superlatives to describe him. He is simply the best - and my experience with him was 100% all and more I could hope for. if you are serious about your education, take him. Your life will be changed for the better.
Salwak treats his students with the utmost respect. He comes with high expectations and all of his students rise to them. His lectures on Shakespeare are wonderfully conceived and executed. Anyone coming to this class will leave loving the playwright - and the professor who has led them through the plays. High recommended!
He is a great teacher and is very willing to help the student (IF THEY ASK FOR IT) he won't force anyone to make a rough draft but will happily give feedback to whoever is willing to write one. Amazing teacher!
Salwak is a tirelessly eloquent advocate for the humanities and deep thought in an era when we are seeing a universal contempt for the life of the mind. His approach to literature avoids the follies of political correctness. He restores for all of us a reverence for literature at a time when we are besieged culturally by irreverence. The best.
Fantastic teacher! He really cares about his students and wants to help them grow into strong writers. He responds quickly to emails and answers every question in them! Only downside is, he never did any magic tricks in class.
Best English Professor -- EVER! Incredibly intelligent, super nice, very supportive, answers all your questions no matter how basic. Gives great feeedback and is always available. Lots of reading as expected in an English class. A real and caring Professor you can learn a lot from. The takeaway from this class really prepares you to write well.
This was one of the best professors Ive ever had. I was probably one of these worst students, I came in late (had an 8 am class- not a morning person) but it's worth the early morning. I never read the bible before but he had a very smart way of teaching such a dense "book". Very wise man oh and has funny "dad jokes". Get ready to read a lot though
In my years in school, few professors that I have taken can match Salwak in the depth and passion for his literary experiences and expertise. If the title "professor of the decade" existed, Salwak would be in this country entitled to it. The respect he shows his students is returned to him by his students a hundred times over. Take him.
I took Salwak for English 101 over the summer and he was great! He isn't nit picky or strict. He wants to help you and see you succeed. I'm already signed up to take him for English 103! I really recommend him
Prof. Salwak is not only one of the greatest teachers of his generation but also the kindest of men.
He is a great professor. All you do in class is talk about the small readings you have to read before each class. Sometimes you don't have to read. Only had 3 essays and one research paper at the end. Thats all you are graded in. He is also such a lenient grader. Easy A if you can write okay and organize well.
This was a very rewarding class. Each week we read, discussed and deeply analyzed powerful works of fiction and short fiction, culminating with two short novels. The essays required (three) challenged me greatly but we were able to receive feedback on our rough drafts. Each day I left class turned inside out intellectually. It was brilliant.
Prof. Salwak guides you through the challenges of reading and understanding poetry, fiction and drama. He inspires each student to better understand literature and to produce clear and concise essays. There are three essay exams and one research paper. Very fair prof. Would highly recommend.
Prof. Salwak's journeys through literature are genuinely exhilarating. He is wise, and his wisdom is delivered with extraordinary lucidity and charm. He will answer your questions in a variety of surprising ways, many of them with wit, all of them provocatively. His classes are gems, finely polished. Take him.
Great class. Took it online and grading is mostly made up of discussion points and exams (which are short essays). Responds quickly to emails if you have a question. Very interesting material to read throughout the course. Final essay was only minimum 5 pages and you got to choose from one of the readings. Highly recommend.
Prof. Salwak brings to the classroom 45 years of experience and an international reputation as an educator of high repute earned with over 25 published books and numerous speaking engagements. Students can't do better than enroll in his classes on Shakespeare, Literature of the Bible, English Literature, and composition and critical thinking.
Every one of Salwak's classes - Shakespeare, English Literature, Literature of the Bible, Composition and Critical Thinking - showcases this brilliant professor teaching at the height of his craft. Regardless of your major, take him. You'll come away changed for the better with an expanded mind and spirit. He could teach at any university.
THE BEST English professor I've ever had. It was my first honors class ever and my first English class in 7 years and I have an A (not because he's easy but because he teaches extremely well). My only critique is that all of his lectures and most chosen short stories centre around western religion, but still very worth taking!
Never have I ever met such an incredibly intelligent and articulate professor before! I am in his hybrid English 101 class that started this past February and I can already see my improvement! I adore English, and Professor Salwak encourages and fuels my thirst for the knowledge! Taking him, you will never regret it - regardless of which class !
Absolutely adore Dr. Salwak So Blessed I was given the opportunity to be apart of his literature of the Bible class. Highly recommend him he's by far my FAVORITE professor. He really cares about his students and their understanding of the material.
Professor Salwak is to date the most phenomenal professor I have ever had. He takes the material that we must read and goes in depth about the meaning of the texts. The tests are easy and open notes. His class is interesting. On top of all of these things, he is a genuinely kind person.
This was a heavy course but Professor Salwak made it easier by being available to his students, if you ask him any question he will answer it, plus he is constantly checking his email to get back to students in a timely matter, his lectures are a bit long but there is a lot of solid information to use at a future time by simply taking notes.
He's an amazing professor that makes you work for your grade. Hes very caring and every time you reach out to him he will help you out and make sure you understand what he's asking for.
Salwak is absolutely incredible. The work load in the class is simple and spread out. He is very flexible on attendance and due dates as long as you speak with him. He lectures the entire class, but I always left his class questioning myself and life choices in a more profound way. He is so inspiring and all around, my favorite professor!
Salwak is so genuinely intelligent. His work is very manageable if you take it little by little. His Shakespeare class is my favorite class that I have taken at Citrus and honestly wish i could take it again. He teaches with so much passion and love for his job, which transfers onto the student's attitude about the class. Would recommend.
He seems boring at first but his lectures and corny jokes actually make the class entertaining. The main part of this class is reading, reading, and more reading. Exams are based around content talked about during the lectures. He gives long period assignments to complete on your own over 2 or so months so don't procrastinate with those!
I have taken Prof. Salwak for four classes. From the first day I've found his lectures and discussions to be extraordinarily stimulating, insightful, and wise. Regardless of your major, take his classes.
From the first day of class, Salwak is passionately and intellectually engaged with the material under discussion - and so are his students. I have never, ever experienced such a high energy, stimulating and rewarding class like this. Highly recommended to every student.
he was a fine professor, but the entire class revolves around the topic of God and Christianity. If you believe in that then this is the class for you, but if not it gets annoying and boring fast. Attendance isnt mandatory but if u skip youll miss a lecture that will be on the exam.
Pr. Salwak is respects his students very well. He entitles everyone to their own opinion and is not out to tell his own agenda in anyway. His papers are easy and the reading is short. However, his lectures are unbelievably boring, nothing he says in the lecture will help you with anything. It is like sitting down for two hours and hearing his life.
Each day I come to class on Shakespeare with high expectations. Prof. Salwak's lectures are so insightful and informative. The only time he references himself is when he uses a personal example to illustrate a point he is making. He could be teaching at any university. How fortunate we are to have him. Highly recommended.
Prof. Salwak is the best teacher I have ever had. His lectures on Shakespeare are witty, deeply informed, and relevant to our studies. Each day I come away from class knowing more than I could ever have imagined about the subject and about life in general. Students get out of the class what they put into it. This is a challenging rewarding course.
What I appreciate about this course in Shakespeare is that the prof. stays objective, rarely referencing himself or his life except when it is relevant to the studies. He stays on target and is so well-prepared each day. If someone has a complaint, probably he/she came with an attitude, unprepared. How could anyone not love this class? Great!!!
I have only good things to say about Prof. Salwak's class on Shakespeare. Each lecture is like a finely polished gem - so interesting and helpful as he takes us deep into the subject. This is without a doubt one of the most rewarding class, personally and academically, that I have ever taken - and I look forward every day to it.
Prof. Salwak is so genuine and informed. My favorite of his classes is Shakespeare because he fills each lecture with passion and obvious love for his subject. This affects the students: "one loving spirit sets another on fire." The students come away on fire, too!
Salwak honestly is one of a kind and a true gentleman. His methodology is nothing like anything I had come across. He manages to teach me things that I didnt know he was teaching me at the time and introduces me to so many new insights into Shakespeare, literature, the world and life in general. I continue to come away from each class enriched.
The best professor I have ever had for a class.
I will be forever grateful beyond words for what Prof. Salwak has shared of his immense knowledge on English literature. At the end of each class, I wish I could stay longer.
Intelligent professor, has a ton to share, and encourages participation. Lectures are FANTASTIC since they relate to every individual in some way. Your input enhances discussion, helps you to become a better test taker, and allows him to give you appropriate feedback. Very organized in his lectures, and good conversations make time fly memorably :)
I took Professor Salwaks ENGL103 online class. The class consists of weekly discussion boards, 2 papers (five-paragraph essay), a final exam, and a research paper (5-7 pages). He is straightforward on what he expects for each assignment and gives good feedback for each paper.
Professor Salwak is wonderful! Took his honors class. He is inspirational and engaging. He won't do any magic for you, but encourages students to go to a show. There's 3 essays and 1 research paper. Tough grader, but gives good feedback. First time I've ever gotten so many B's on papers. He'll definitely make you work for it!
My Literature of the Bible class was absolutely AMAZING!!!! If I could spend every day, all day, in this class, I would. Professor Salwak always insists that you "trust the text" and does not impose any one belief or religion over another. He simply teaches right from the Bible and provides an array of knowledge to his students.
Prof. Salwak is the most remarkable person I have ever met. I have rarely come across anyone who shares the depth and detail of his thinking and feeling. He is deeply serious about the subjects he teaches but delivers his lectures with a wonderful sense of humor. He is immensely learned, up to date, very approachable. Take him!
There isn't much to do, so at least that's nice. 5 weeks into the semester and we've only had 4 discussion questions & 2 exams. Even if you do well on the discussions though, it won't matter. You need a near perfect grade on exams in order to just keep an A. Idk I just feel like I'm teaching myself. Not a teaching style that works for me I guess.
A very demanding course but worth every second. 3 essay exams, discussion posts with replies, 20-30 hours of reading from the text every week (poetry, short fiction, drama and supplementary readings), and research paper. I've appreciated the professor's excellent feedback. Students will do as well as they want to by working hard and staying focused
I loved Prof Salwak! His lectures are so interesting and in depth, even if you don't like English. He also requires an affordable textbook which is awesome! He will do everything he can to help you succeed and is truly interested in you and your goals. He is such an inspirational person and is super welcoming. Four essays and in class discussions.
I took it as an online class over the summer and we had no zoom meetings or barely any homework just essays assigned. He was very open to answering questions and helping, he makes you try hard but will help you along the way. Rounds students high Bs to As if he noticed them trying to work for it. def would recommend
I personally really liked Professor Salwak's class. You can tell that he has a lot of knowledge that he is ready to share for others to learn from. He is very methodical in the online "lectures". There isn't a lot of homework, but be prepared to read a lot and for his essay-based exams. All of which, he gives thorough feedback on at the end.
I do not recommend This Professor if you want to take take this class online, like you I read about him and everyone was saying how good the class was, its September 21, 5th week into the fall semester of 2020 and we haven't even heard the professors voice of seen his face, he just posts discussions and thats pretty much it, he doesn't even record.
This is my first experience with an online class. Prof. Salwak brilliantly brings the material to life every week with video lectures, posted lecture texts, discussion posts, and exams. I am thoroughly enjoying the work. It is a difficult class, but you will do well so long as you stay engaged every day and keep up with the work. Highly recommended
From the first day of this online class, I knew that I was in good hands with Prof. Salwak. He is so well-prepared, so engaged, and so thorough. There is a lot of reading but it's all valuable and as long as you stay up with it you'll be ready for discussions and exams. During these difficult times he is exceptionally helpful.
Everyday Prof. Salwak draws upon his rich literary learning and an extraordinary sensibility that enables him to illuminate brilliantly the classics we are studying. Above all, he draws upon intelligence, compassion, and human decency -- qualities that I find are sorely needed in higher education. How refreshing to have a professor who cares.
I am really enjoying this class and I so appreciate all the hard work Prof. Salwak is doing on behalf of all his students. He answers every e-mail right away, participates fully in the discussions, returns exams and discussion posts quickly, and supplies wonderful lectures, reading assignments, and helpful links. I highly recommend him!
Put in the effort and do your work, Highly recommend !!
Professor Salwak is a great professor and gets back to his students via email quickly. His assignments and discussions are very interesting and tend to encourage profound thoughts and answers. He gives students plenty of time for assignments, although some can be really challenging. I had 100% on discussions, but could never get an A on a essay.
I don't know when I have taken a class as satisfying as Professor Salwak's. The breadth and depth of his lectures is stunning. Of all the professors I have had, he is the most detailed and comprehensive, the sharpest in understanding, the deepest in empathy for his students. Highly recommended.
Professor Salwak is amazing. He requires a good amount of readings but you can tell he truly cares about his students. I had some issues on my end with submitting assignments online & he was very helpful & communicates. He is very patient & kind. He is a professor who leaves an impact on his students. Just read & do the weekly posts.
One of my favorite proffers. The class was difficult, but a great experience where I learned so much about English and life.
I took Professor Salwak for English 103 and literature of the bible his class was great! I would take his class for all my classes if I could. In these courses, you are required to read and textbooks and required. Professor Salwak communicates well with you and he is not slow at responding. I took both of his classes online due to the pandemic
What can I say about this professor that hasn't already been said? This is my third class with him, the first two in the classroom but this one, because of the pandemic, online. To this class he brings the same passion, energy, and brilliance that I enjoyed in the classroom. Whatever he teaches, take it! You will not be disappointed.
Hes okay. Assigns a lot of reading, so be ready for that. Discussion post every week, along with the reply. 3 written exams throughout the course and one 5-7 page paper on a class reading of your choice.
Henry Adams once wrote, "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." Professor Salwak is an inspired teacher who holds his students enthralled by making the reading so real and important. His lectures are amazingly clear and informative. Highly recommended.
The class consisted of discussion posts on readings, three midterm essays, and a final extensive paper on one of the class readings. The work is simple, but it's virtually impossible to get an A in his online classes. Please don't come into his class thinking you're going to get an A because you won't.
This is a valuable class worth every second you invest in it. The readings and assignments are a challenge. Prof. Salwak has high expectations just as if we were in a university class, and I welcome that. His lectures are searching and deeply informed. He brilliantly and fairly assesses each student's work with wonderfully detailed responses!
Prof. Salwak is exceptionally fair in his grading policies and he gives his students every opportunity to submit rough drafts of essays before the final draft is evaluated. He treats his students with respect and courtesy. They respond to his high expectations. He always wants his students to do their best. Highly recommended.
Where do I even begin? Through his many inspiring lectures (both written and video), Prof. Salwak takes us into a deeper understanding of the subject. He returns assignments promptly with detailed comments to help us improve. He epitomizes great scholarship and great teaching whether online or in the classroom.
Every class with Professor Salwak, either in-person or online, is a virtuoso performance in the art of teaching. Over the past three years I have taken everything he teaches. Expect to read a lot (he venerates books, thank heaven!), to write a lot, and to receive on each assignment detailed, extremely helpful comments delivered promptly. Brilliant
Professor Salwak made the class feel very easy for me. He always responded as soon as he could and always gave good feedback, and personally I felt he was an easy grader. There were weekly discussion posts and around 3 exams with a research paper, but it was an easy workload! It was a wonderful course.
Professor Salwak is an amazing English teacher, but will really make you work for that A. He doesn't waste a word when it comes to providing feedback and is more than willing to look over drafts before you submit the final paper. I put all I had into the essays I wrote for this class and it was hard, but my writing has never improved so quickly!
Professor Salwak, offers his students a comprehensive Shakespeare introductory course. Salwak, charges the students to go and learn for themselves. As one who had little previous exposure to Shakespeare, I was highly impressed with the class format. Also, the professor provides each student with amazingly helpful personalized commentary.
He has a lot of reading. He is kinda a tough grader when it comes to essays, so make sure you follow the prompt. Make sure you explain what symbolizes this and that. He has three essay exams, and one research paper. Ask him for feedback and put your all into it. You will end up fine if you follow what he suggests you to do. He rounds high Bs to As
Amazingly, Prof. Salwak's transition to online instruction while we're coping with the pandemic is focused, inspiring, with brilliant lectures and feedback. He teaches as if we are a the university - same expectations, same thoroughness - and I deeply appreciate that. His insights into the literature are stunning. Highly recommended. Take him!
Professor Salwak is the most remarkable person I have ever met. I have rarely come across anyone who shares the depth and detail of his thinking and feeling. He is deeply serious about the subjects he teaches but delivers his lectures with a wonderful sense of humor. He is immensely learned, up to date, very approachable. Take him!
There is nobody like Prof. Salwak. He is simply a wonderful teacher, first-class in everything he presents. He treats every student with the utmost respect and challenges us to do our best each day. Superior in intellect and mastery of his material, how fortunate e all are to have him as our guide in the classroom.
This class is indeed an easy class to pass, just make sure you do not have any unexpected emergencies that will affect you from doing well on your tests. If you have an unpredictable lifestyle where things occur unexpected, such as family emergencies or your life being threatened, do not take this instructor. He grading system is not for this.
Along with extremely fascinating lectures and reading assignments, Prof. Salwak is compassionate and empathetic, ready to help his students to succeed in spite of any challenges they may be facing. I appreciate his flexibility when I faced family problems. I reached out to him and he responded immediately. I will be always thankful for that.
It's amazing how Prof. Salwak can bring the subject to life while we're still online during this pandemic. He reaches out to each student individually and to the class as a whole, encourages participation and motivates all of us to do our best. His love of Shakespeare is obvious with great insight and sensitivity. He cares for his students.
Taking one of Prof. Salwak's classes is an unforgettable experience rich in literary discoveries and innovative approaches to the art of writing. It's clear that he is teaching from experience, not theory. He is authentic, passionate about his subjects, and incredibly committed to and patient with his students. Highly recommended!
From the first day Prof. Salwak is passionately and intellectually engaged with the material under discussion, and so are his students. His classes are like gens, finely polished. Take him. He will change your life for the better.
Dr Salwak is a brilliant, gifted, professor of English. He Knows how to convey abstract literary concepts Into thought provoking thoughts, Challenging at the same time accessible. Being a student in his class was an honor and a gift.
Never will forget my experience w/ Salwak. He was intriguing and extremely passionate about his career and about the success of his students. I had never been very good at writing, but he gave me great feedback on how to improve and was always attentive to and engaging his students. Would take him again if he taught at the Uni I transferred to
I would take Prof. Salwak for any class he teaches. I will always be grateful for his wisdom and encouragement. His classes are a rare pleasure for students. He is exceptionally learned, shrewd, caring, always humble. He puts his students first. He is the best!
Prof. Salwak's class is interesting and enjoyable. There's a lot of reading but the assigned reading is interesting. He gives good feedback and is very responsive. I suggest taking advantage of the writing center if you're struggling. The T.A. is super helpful.
I had this professor for Winter 2023 and he is beyond ridiculous, he has you read a number of stories an from this he expects you to be able to write graduate level papers no one scored above a 90 graded by like 6 items 2 essays a research paper, a written final and 3 discussion question, I'd avoid his classes and take my word for it, ignore above.
Very chill on all fronts. Good lectures. Would take again
Dr. Salwak is a very tough grader, had me reading a number of stories, didn't really provide a reference paper on how the finished paper should be in order to receive an A for that. I really should have listened to a friends previous warning on the difficulty of his class. You have to write at a masters level of English to score above a 90/100.
I appreciate everything about this professor. He is passionate about his subject with clear grading criteria. Ask for help and he is always available. He has expectations for and believes in his students. How well they do is up to them. He is fair and wise. Highly recommended.
Brilliant in every respect. This was a six-week online class which is a challenge because of the short time, but Prof Salwak is very supportive and encouraging every step of the way. I recommend him highly. You will not be disappointed. One of the finest teachers I have ever had.
Wonderful class. Prof. Salwak carried us through every step of the essays and research paper thoroughly and with great care. I appreciate all of his help. His grading criteria are clear and fair. I recommend his classes to anyone who truly wants to learn and who takes their education seriously. The best!
Literature of the Bible is a fantastic class that I recommend to everyone. Regardless of your perspective you will feel comfortable as you engage this key text. Stunning insights delivered by a caring professor and his electrifying lectures and discussions. I savor every class session.
The sweetest professor ever. I knew nothing about Shakespeare but he never made me feel bad about it. You get packets to work on throughout each reading, if you dont understand a question he will help you with it. Only two exams, one midterm and one final. You get a study guide with every question on it. Research paper on anything Shakespeare.
took this class online. although i got an A, i do think that this is because of my great high school teachers. class was definitely challenging, grading is confusing, there were no rubrics, so no one really knew what he expected. if you want a good grade, get help from the embedded tutor, email him a lot, and ask questions.
Terrific class. Each assignment has clear grading criteria with an attached rubric: two essays, one final exam, research paper, discussion posts. Highly recommended. The best!
From the first day his expectations for all assignments are clear and fair. Excellent feedback on all work. Great insights. A pleasure to take!
Take in person if you can and talk to him for help when needed! He is always there and willing to give feedback. This class is HARD, but rewarding if you put in the effort. All texts used can be found online as well as the textbook. With 10 or so weekly discussions and only 3 essays, you gotta really want the grade
Prof. Salwak's class is engaging and rewarding. Clear expectations, great feedback, and a helpful TA. For study prep, I found unstuckstudy ai and the writing center super useful alongside the textbook.
Super smart, kind man. however, his class is essentially a glorified book club with papers and exams. all you do is read and discuss in class, theres no collaborative activities or any interesting assignments to facilitate higher understanding. with little assignments, your grade drastically changes if you dont do well on a paper/exam.great guy tho
A brilliant class taught by a brilliant professor. He leads us through the complexities of classics from the Middle Ages through the 18th century. Maintains high expectations for himself and his students, and they respond positively. As an English major this course will prepare me well for advanced work and, later, grad. school. Highly recommended.
Amazing, highly intelligent professor. Detailed lectures transport you into the material. I am so lucky to have taken several of his courses! The best!
Professor Salwak is one of the BEST professors I have ever had. He has been very understanding to my personal situation and has helped me not only in succeeding but to make sure I am okay. I highly recommend professor Salwak and I hope you get the same experience I did!!
It doesn't matter how long or how hard you work on the written exams or research paper.. including reviewing your research paper back and forth with HIS tutor.. he will continuously only give a B. I worked so hard on my written assignments to adhere to the way he prefers them to be, and still, a B. I have A's in every other class but his.
A wonderful teacher! He is really passionate about the course material. He also cares about his students, and is happy to help outside of class. As long as you attend class, pay attention to his lectures, and take good notes, the class is manageable. There is a lot of reading but he explains it all well so its easy to understand. would take again!
Brilliant class. We wrote two essays (on poetry and short fiction), one exam (on drama), and a research paper. The professor was very accessible. With each assignment I showed him a rough draft first to get his feedback. His lectures are inspirational and memorable. One of the best teachers I have ever had.
I am convinced half of these good reviews are just him writing them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT AN A. Impossible... Our class average was a B, another reason I'm sure these "great" reviews are fake, nobody gets an A.
I am convinced that the June 18th review is a fake. He said getting an "A" was impossible but I earned an "A". He said that attendance is not mandatory but the syllabus clearly communicates that it is mandatory. His tone convinces me that this disgruntled student never reached out to the professor for help even though he encourages hat.
I'm a female and the June 18th rating is not fake.
Brilliant lectures and discussions, respectful of others, exceptionally well-prepared. I would take anything he teaches.
Amazing and well-spoken. Gave great feedback on exams and papers. I'd say he's a tough grader.. or maybe I'm just not that great at writing. Kinda sad I got a B, but he was a great professor.
