She is very nice and tries to help but she has really difficult time communicating. Very thick Romanian Accent
Very thick Romanian accent so sometimes you have to think about the word she is trying to say. I've never not been able to figure out a word she's said. She's not bad for as hard of a class as it is.
This is a difficult class--you will have to spend a lot of time studying. Prof. Kovacs is extremely nice, very funny, and enthusiastic about the class. She works very hard to help, but the class is just hard.
Very nice teacher. She knows her material, and wants youto know it too. She is willing to help at almost any time (even outside of office hours). What a great teacher. Be ready to study, though. Orgo is a tough class.
Orgo is hard, there is no way around it, but Prof. Kovacs is very helpful. This is the first prof i have had that has an accent, and i had no problem understanding her. Be prepared to put in long hours form the beginning, everything is bulit uponit.
Very very nice, smart lady. She wants her students to succeed and really tries to help you do so! But, the material is hard no matter who you take. Her lectures go very fast...plan on reading the book. she is awesome if. you ask questions.
Bad score test #2. Asked for structure printouts I could use to review-3 p.m. Fri before Spring Break! Campus was deserted, but she helped til I'd to excuse myself for class. Difficulty is in material, not her. She's the BEST choice for Orgo!
She is a very smart professor who knows what she is teaching. The class goes very fast and she is always willing to help if you don't understand everything.
she does a good job. organic is a tough subject plus she has the language barrier and she does well with that. she is very helpful especially when it came to the final and she had a review seesion late at night to accomodate everyone. she is funny too
funny and nice; explains everything clearly. she even asks if everyone understood when she's done teaching something because she has a strong accent. my advise: take her if possible
The class is tough but she definately is willing to work with you to help you understand. The material is tougher than 241 but she did an excellent job teaching it. Her accent is much easier to understand than last semester. Must be the exposure! :)
Had last year and have again this fall for second sem, very nice, extreemly helpful, wants students to learn, if all teachers were this dedicated students would excell, take her if you can
Organic was tough. Personally, didn't like her. Enjoyed making you feel stupid if you asked a question or were confused in lab. Expects you to study like it's your only class. Lectures were unorganized and confusing. Extremely moody.
i have no idea how she has so many smileys on here. in my opinion she is not a good prof. she is very moody and doesnt really seem to care if you understand or not. she goes really fast in her lectures and when you ask a question she acts like its a pain to explain it again... dont take her!
Not a good prof at all. Doesn't care if you don't understand and does not seem to realize that chemistry is not your whole life. Goes really fast and expects you to know things that she never went over too. Definately do not take her class :(
if you don't like profs with accents, don't take her. she tends to come off extremely rude, but she can be a very nice person. she wants her students to understand, but seems to get frustrated when we don't. she drops the lowest test score and has review sessions the day before exams. not a bad prof
She is a really bad teacher! DO NOT TAKE HER! she is all over the place during lectures, you know its bad when class average on an exam is 58%. She can be VERY rude at times and doesn't respect her students.
Her lectures are very unstructured, and she's not very clear about what she is teaching you. She's a nice person, but she has no concept of how hard it is to teach yourself chemistry, since that is how you have to learn in the class. Questions are worded weird on tests and quizzes.
Attention all nursing students taking her for 231: She is Romanian (that means she's a vampire) and if you get less than an 80% in the course she will suck your blood.
Not an easy class! Professor Kovacs does her best to teach too much material in too little time. The chem departent needs to adjust credit hrs to make allowances for the work load. Do NOT get behind-this class should be 5or6 credit hours-take with blow off gen eds and prepare to study like never B4!
Prof Kovacs was a great teacher. It was a very tough class but if you study then you will be able to pull off a good grade. She is Romanian but her accent is not hard to follow. I think her lectures are VERY understandable and she ALWAYS answers questions. One of the best profs here. TAKE HER!
what a hard teacher. Not good at explainations, unfair, and hard.
horrible horrible horrible prof! you couldn't understand a word from her mouth due to her strong accent. this is a difficult class to begin with and she doesn't try to make it understandable. i would not recommend taking her for this class unless you plan on retaking it the next semester.
i would not take her again if you paid me. i am a very good student, i studied more than ever and i am not doing well in the class. she asks ?'s on test from diffrent chapters. she is rude hard and does not seem to want students to do well. very unstructured. prepare to fail. class averages are 57
Prof. is VERY hard! Quizzes every week AND in discussion. Exams were VERY hard, and her being Romanian made it even harder to understand. At times could be nice and helpful, but seemed to have more bad days when didn't feel like answering questions and made you feel dumb. Take another Prof. if can!
Take different Prof if possible! She was very nice in lab but very unstructured and hard to understand in lecture!! Exams were HORRIBLY hard and her grammar stinks!!
Class is VERY difficult; prof. Kovacs tends to be very short with ppl at times and can be unapproachable; other times she was helpful. It just depended on the day. She may have been struggling with outside issues during our semest. don't know. study hard. ASK QUESTIONS! Go to office hours!
VERY difficult. Hard to understand and was extremely moody. Made comments to and about her students that make them feel stupid and her unapproachable. Went from A student to getting first D in my life! No matter how hard you try, she seems to enjoy making your life difficult.
Excellent professor for Organic! She seems difficult at first but if you keep up on the reading and actually come to class! you can make it out of it with a B or better. She makes the ACS EASY.
I found her to be very helpful in and out of class. She seemed to have a very easy-going nature and was very approachable. She did not like seeing people fall behind and was willing to compromise and help them out however she could. Do the work, and you'll be fine!
Taking Organic in 6 weeks was a nightmare; however, Prof. Kovacs helped us and did everything she could to help us succeed. Pay attention to any previous exams she may post, they will DEFINATELY help on exams. DOn't expect you're grade to be handed to you, but if you spend the necessary time studying for this class, you will be fine. Take Kovacs!
Six weeks to learn Organic is just too short! She is great, take her, but take it in the Fall or Winter, not in a summer half session. Also, do not expect an easy A or even an easy B. Come to class, do the work, do the readings, and check Blackboard frequently. Pay attention to examples she gives in class and to old exams she may post. Helpful!
She isn't clear or organized in thoughts!
CHANGE PROFESSORS. She is very hard to understand due to her accent. She is rude, unapproachable, and unorganized. Test have ?s from chapters not discussed. Felt like i had to teach myself the material from the book.
It is very dificult to understand her but if you actually go talk to her, she is honestly the nicest lady ever. This class is not easy and everyone should know that already. She knows her stuff and if you're more proactive in learning, she is a really good teacher to have!!!
Don't take this class with her unless you want to spend all of your time outside of class trying to teach yourself the material.
This was my second time taking organic. I went from a D+ with Herrington and got an A with Kovacs. Yes she has an accent but it's not that bad. Do the book work! This semester she gave A LOT of extra credit and raised me from a B to an A. Also do the old exams she has on BB. I found a lot of questions she repeats. Def not an easy A but is possible.
Horrible....****
One word...........terrible!!!
She gets a bad rap because her class is really hard, but if you go to her office and work through all the material you will be fine. You have to want to succeed in this class, it is a tough class. Orgo is hard, but Dr. Kovacs tries to make it relevant and fun.
Took her for Chm 245, 246, 247,and 248; I did not like the class at all. She was very intimidating when you went to her office hours or to talk to her after class. Overall, I think she didn't like me and I tried my hardest. I spent like twelve hours a week in MS3 doing homework (which there is alot!) Watch out!!
took class in 2007... second time around. Difficult class, but got an A after a previous D+. Given I had a group who studied together as much as possible and asked her questions a lot. She was helpful, and sometimes her Romanian accent is hard to understand. ASK for CLARIFICATION!! Her lab quizzes help your overall understanding so be thankful
Great professor - makes organic chemistry "doable". Uses discussion and office hours for extra help on difficult subjects. She interprets your approach and caters teaching to how you learn. Organic can be a tough subject - so no doubt you have to be willing to put in the time; class developed my creative thinking and reduced my test anxiety :)
Organic Chemistry is tough. I struggled a lot first semester as my prof was awful. Dr. Kovacs tried her best to explain all the topics. She does a great job even with her accent. She is super nice, and always willing to give help if you ask! Good professor! I would've gotten an A in the class if it wasn't for the ACS exam.
She will walk you through the material but doesn't give very deep explanations. You will be fine if you make an honest effort to prepare for class.
The class itself was really hard but i feel like having this professor made things a bit easier. Really nice professor, interesting class.
Yes, this class is extremely difficult, but it will be with any professor. Kovacs is extremely helpful. If you go to her office hours, she will do whatever it takes to get you the grade you want. She has a fantastic spirit and I know that I would have failed if I had another professor. Highly recommend her.
No matter which professor you have, you will have to learn most of Ochem on your own (sorry). However, Dr. Kovacs will always be there to help you with the most difficult topics when you need the extra help. On the upside she's hilarious, which can help when you're frustrated. Ask her about Game of Thrones!
For Organic Chemistry you can't expect the professor to spoon feed you all of the information. Having Prof. Kovacs will force force you to read the book which if you want a good grade should do anyways. She is always available outside class and will be patient then, but don't wait till the last minute.
I would definitely recommend Kovacs! She is intimidating, and can get frustrated with her students at times, but she is great at explaining orgo chem. She makes everything clear, but you NEED to practice A LOT outside of class. Studied constantly, did very poorly on exams, still got a B. She uses a curve so do your best and try not to stress!
She gives waaaay too much work for an organic chemistry lecture. Online homework, worksheets in and out of class, videos to watch online, performance task (semester long on your own time), along with discussion boards for every chapter. Too much going on, does not actually teach information, just fills in worksheets. Relies entirely on the book.
Difficult class in general. Use the practice material and test provided to study, those are what she bases the tests from.
I really try not to be too harsh on Kovacs as I know organic chemistry is just a tough subject, but honestly I found her so difficult to understand as well as extremely unapproachable. Lecture doesn't explain how to do things unless you specifically ask which gets you some sass, otherwise it's just working through problems. Fall behind failure.
Awesome professor! Orgo is a really tough subject but she makes it alright. She is always available to help and is always setting up activities outside of lecture to help the learning process that much more. Totally approachable and I will for sure try to get into her 242 class. She is one of the few bright spots of the chemistry department.
Kovacs is very smart and knows a ton about orgo. As a result she often skips over crucial information for those of us without a chemistry degree. Overall she is super nice and willing to help you personally IF you go to office hours. Lecture notes are a bit scatter-brain style so you have to read the chapter.
This professor is hard to understand. Everything I learned from organic chemistry I read/taught myself. She is very intimidating and is not good at explaining/ answering questions. Exams feel like they're impossible because she puts questions on there that have never been covered in class. She also doesn't give answer keys for exams.
She is a great professor, very intimidating and cranky at times. She goes through material very quickly and expects you to learn it quickly and easily. She is always there if you need extra help though. She has in person office hours and online office hours. You may want to get a tutor to help you out though.
I loved having Kovacs as a professor. I was worried about being able to succeed in this class, but she helped me get a good grade. She gives out multiple extra credit opportunities/questions on exams. Sometimes she can be a bit scattered, but I easily got used to her teaching style, and she definitely wants you to succeed! Just go to office hours!!
Do not take her for 242 lab, she is an incredibly hard grader, very picky. And she spends at least the first hour talking leaving you without time to complete the lab.
do NOT take her for lab. I have an A in lecture but almost failing lab because her directions are unclear. Never have time to finish the lab because she talks too much, meaning you dont get to finish the lab and you are marked down for everything you dont get too. Talks to students like they are stupid if you ask a question. DONT take her
She is usually available outside of class but her lectures are VERY unorganized and her tests questions are very difficult and you will learn best by reading the book yourself. However, she gives a lot of extra credit and even gave tests corrections when our class did bad.
Overall, if you don't mind teaching yourself the material then take her. She gives a lot of extra credit. However, she does not give notes, just example problems. Her tests are also very difficult. You definitely have to put in a lot of effort for her class. She is always available though for questions and clarification.
Do not take her!!! All of the work is on you when it could be such an easier class with another prof who will actually teach you how to understand problems. She always gets off topic, and lectures are basically pointless to attend as she will go through one example problem (never takes any notes...) in a 50 minute class. 0/10 would not recommend.
The first day of class she asked all of us what our major was and then proceeded to teach as if we were all Chemistry majors and already knew exactly what she was talking about. I am usually an average student in Chemistry but I had to withdraw from her class because I felt like I could never get a clear explanation from her teaching methods.
She can't stay on topic during lectures, so we never get through all of the material before exam day. You HAVE TO read the book and teach yourself mechanisms, new information, and basically anything she could throw on the exam. Most people in the class don't finish the exams or receive decent grades. Also, her personality is unapproachable.
Her lectures are difficult to follow. She teaches the class like we are all chemistry majors and remember everything from Orgo 1. I learned a lot of material from the book. The online homework is difficult. Her office hours are very useful, and the blackboard collaborator review sessions are great
I had professor Kovacs for 241 lab during the 2020 fall semester and I hated it. She was always so mean and made us do so much unnecessary work for labs that other classes did not. I would get really bad anxiety going to lab because she would yell at us for making small mistakes and was super unapproachable. Take anyone else for lab that you can.
Kovacs has been my least favorite lab prof at GVSU. She is such a tough grader for no reason and would mark down points if our lab books didn't look exactly how SHE wanted it, even though everyone was told to do the same thing - no matter your lab prof. She would yell at us and would get mad if we looked at our procedure too much or ask questions.
Her online class was the hardest class I"ve ever taken. She assigned a lot work that I never had time to learn the material and had to scramble to get it done. The class is unorganized and she explains things kind of randomly. She is funny but that doesn't help when I can't even learn the material. I wouldn't recommend her for your first Orgo prof.
Prof Kovacs was ok for Orgo lab. Hard to understand her when she speaks, tough grader, not flexible. She can be caring. We weren't allowed to speak or help each in lab, if you didn't have your lab book prepared she would kick you out. If you have an incident with her and ask for support from the staff you aren't going to get it. Pick someone else
I am a chemistry major and this class made me hate organic chemistry. You WILL have to teach yourself organic chemistry. You will have to learn how to teach yourself complicated material while juggling many assignments. She gives an absolutely ridiculous amount of homework that not even a 400 level class, and I know because I'm a senior.
It was a very hard class that took some time to get used too, but after a while it became a lot of fun once I figured out what was going on and got to know Dalila. She is very caring and even though there is so much homework it all has a purpose. I really liked her for lab too! Taking again for CHM 247/248!
She's really grown on me! At first her style of throwing tons and tons of homework at me hit pretty hard, but once you get in a groove it becomes a lot easier. She provides a pretty good amount of review for her exams, which are quite difficult. I'd definitely recommend!
She 'lost' a report of mine. It was all stapled together, and she only handed me back the notebook portion. I tried to email her about it, I tried meeting with her in person about it- she did not respond to any of my attempts. Do not recommend.
Her personality takes a while to get used to, but in the end you will find it really is just tough love - she wants everyone to succeed, she is just harsher than she realizes sometimes. She gives way too much homework but usually doesn't grade for correctness. Exams are pretty difficult. She's okay in lecture but I had an awful time in her lab.
Most unorganized class I've ever taken. Expect to do a ridiculous amount of work.
She was very caring, but she her blackboard is a mess and you have to spend like 20 hours a week on HW for this class.
Dalila can be intimidating, but she's been by far one of my favorite teachers so far at Grand Valley. If you can get past the tough grading and slightly disorganized blackboard you'll be fine (orgo is just a hard class). She's been one of the most caring and understanding professors I've had and is always available to talk and bounce ideas off of.
She was a great professor and knew the Organic Chem content. That being said, she was super unorganized and it was hard to keep up with what to do for that week. Organic Chemistry is a hard subject in general, but it becomes more understandable if you use other resources to help. Grades were put in so late that we were told to calculate our own.
Kovacs can be intimidating at first but she just wants the best for you. Accessible outside of class and answers questions thoroughly, wants to see your thinking too. Exams are tough but doable if you study and do the practice problems. Lots of homework but it all served a purpose. Very knowledgeable and funny!
The disorganization is NOT a joke and makes this class extremely difficult. Expect to see content on exams and quizzes you will never learn, you'll spend more time in lecture trying to read her hand writing than taking actual notes, and she skips around so much between content that literally it makes no sense. Class average for the first quiz 22%.
Professor Kovacs is a pretty good teacher in teaching organic chemistry. Some quizzes were take-home and homework assignments that we would upload to bb. She did offer a lot of extra credit and opportunities to make up points and does not look down on you if you ask questions. She understands the material is rough but she wants you to succeed truly
She is the most unorganized professor ever. If you ask her a question, you will get a question in return. Her blackboard is a complete mess. She does give extra credit opportunities but her tests are extremely hard.
She has a very passive-aggressive attitude and, at times, can be rude and calls out students for no reason. I've also noticed she is unfair with grading; me and a friend looked over scores for many quizzes/exams and had instances where we had the same answers and one of us would get fewer points or get marked off; her grading is unfair. Gives EC.
Umm, don't recommend. She plays favorites. The content is hard, but if you're not on her good side, she grades you more harshly. You do reading and pre lecture assignments, and she doesn't explain in class work. She assumes you know everything and her test questions are formatted horribly. If you can avoid it, don't take
Organic Chm is a hard class; it's difficult regardless of the prof, but Dalila is solid. Expect lots of pre-lecture hw and to teach yourself from the textbook. She reviews hw mistakes in class but doesn't fully cover everything. Tests can be tricky. Go to office hours—she's helpful and kind. Her jokes and sassy grandma vibes make class more fun.
Professor Kovacs can be intimidating but clearly cares about her students. The class is very tough, but she offers many chances to improve your grade, which eases the pressure. She's very unorganized, so even though attendance isn't mandatory, you won't pass without going and participating. She doesn't tolerate disrespect, but she's never rude.
Very unorganized, for me I couldn't learn because her notes were all over the place which was very confusing for me. She never really labeled what we were doing so all of the rules became confusing on what specifically they were for. Contradicts herself in lectures and sometimes rude
All her quiz questions are worded in a very confusing way, trying to trick you. Even chemistry tutors in the CSC didn't know the answers. Can be rude, if she doesn't like you then she's gonna be mean to you. Contradicts herself all the time in lectures. Save yourself and don't take Kovacs
She is very nice and clearly cares about her students, and she's helpful when you ask questions. But she was extremely unorganized, and her lectures were hard to follow, so I ended up teaching myself most of the material from the textbook. Once she focuses on a topic, she explains it well, but getting there can be confusing. Overall she's SO sweet.
