A very "student friendly" professor - he seems to have our best interests at heart. Good reading materials and class assignments, although he says he is a tough grader at grammer on written assignments. The way he has structured many of the assignments, we can do them early to get them out of the way and thus have a better second half of the semest
Talk about not helpful at all. He is anal and his lectures suck. He makes his students sleep during class because he is extremely boring! He tries to engage the class in participating but he just sucks at it. Dont take him. Taking this professor is not worth your time.
Really nice guy, lectures are boring but very simple. Tests are mc and usually common sense. Make sure you know the review ?'s at the back of each chp. He shows video clips every class and usually always lets you out early. 2-3 pg. paper in your own opinion, research participation is so easy & 5 activities (answers given). Take him.
An excellent instructor. He demands participation and wants you to be involved in your own learning. Lots of great videos & activities. Very helpful & student oriented. I would recommend him!
This was a fun class because he involved us by answering our secret questions each week. No topic was out of bounds & he pulled us into the discussions. Good powerpoints, just maybe too many. Great video clips shown in every class - they are on the tests so you need to attend. Papers & other assignments were not too hard. A nice guy.
This was the most amazing class for me. He made us get involved & speask up in EVERY class. He asked us questions and answered with real life experiences. He uses role play in class ALOT. Tough grader on papers & he expects you to do the reading. I learned so much from him & had fun doing it. I would totally take another class from him!
Uses a very cheap text to save students money. Powerpoints follow the book well. Tests are tough but other assignments are fairly easy. He's very nice & seems to care alot about students.
He is very real, he took the time in our first class to introduce himself so that we would know why he is teaching this class. Easy book to read. He's very interactive though. He wants us talking & interacting about the material in each class. Very clear about assignments - hands out written assignments & then posts on Blackboard.
Dr. Stout is an awsome Professor. His powerpoints, videos, books and exercises are totally about you becoming a better counselor. He is very active in class in terms of calling on people and doing exercises. Three required books but all short & easy to read. Uses Blackboard alot. Assigns papers & a presentation is most of his classes.
He does his best to keep an 8:30AM class interesting. Plays cool music before class to get us going I guess. Tries to have an activity in each class to break up the powerpoints. Does discussions alot that focus on real situations with kids. Recomended!
The school has started this new computer system for practi****sites which really sucks. He had a guest speaker come in & explain it all to us. He is also helping some of us actually get interviews which is cool. He is very focused on working with troubled kids. He also focuses alot on jobs & careers which is interesting.
He seems nice however he talks too much about himself and how wonderful he is. I don't trust goverment employees, unfortunatelly most of them are a bunch of burocrats.
Good teacher, too bad he's team teaching with Debra as she pulls the class down. When he is lecturing class is interesting, relevant to the topic at hand and he is engaging. I would recommend this teacher. He is real and funny and I would not hesitate to ask him for any extra help as he seems very smart.
He is a nice guy, seems pretty laid back actually. He has shown 2 videos so far in class that were both very interesting. He uses the book about half the time & does exercises and things the other half of the time. Uses powerpoint some but not every class. Uses blackboadr alot though.
I took his Leadership class last year & I didn't always like Dr. Stout. He "demands" attendance, attention & participation in class & really challenges those that like to sit back & "ride". Looking back though, I can honestly say I learned ALOT from him. It has helped me at home, at work and at school. His activities are challenging, but help.
He's clearly an expert in addictions & teens. He uses his many years in the field to enhance his lectures. He speaks of past clients, their families & situations to really enhance the class. He gets into his powerpoints & can go fast but likes to answer questions too. Big on role play, he's now practicing groups with us at the end of each class
Dr. Stout is a really good teacher. He breaks up his powerpoints with class discussions & activities. He asks for volunteers alot & people are reluctant to get involved but he moves ahead anyway. He uses interesting guest speakers & videos too. Overall, I would say take him if you can.
Dr. Stout is a great Professor. He likes adolescents and has done alot of work with them. He teaches you to know how to work with them instead of just whats in the book. He uses good videos and has alot of class discussions. Requires a presentation too. Very helpful. Most of the class seems to like him.
Dr. Stout is a good professor. His class is a bit boring, though. He likes to talk - A LOT!! - and the material used in class is not all that interesting. One of the books (a biography) is horrid - some of the worst writing I have ever come across in my life. If you can get through that, you'll be fine.
This class was a life changing experience for me! Great books without costing alot. 3 guest speakers so far & a teen panel next week. He is more interested in you being able to use the info as opposed to just knowing it. He likes role play & small group discussion. We had to give up something for 10 weeks in order to experience addiction & relapse.
I have to agree with the last person. Yes he gave a very tough final but it was open book. He posted an announcement that our class got 7 A's & 17 B's & we only had about 30 students so I would say he's a liberal grader. Very informative & caring style. Highly recommended!
Very straightforward & relaxed style in class. Lectures pretty much follow reading material but he does bring in outside stuff. Very applied teaching style - trys to connect everything to counseling or teaching jobs down the road. Brings in lots of tests that we can take to learn more about ourselves while learning the tests so thats cool.
I love Dr. Stout - he rocks! He is totally interested in us understanding the material in a real life way. He tries to keep things very current. His tests tend to be challenging but if you do the reading & study you won't have a problem.
I have learned alot about myself & others thru all the psych tests he has had us do in class. He likes class discussions, role plays & group projects so don't be shy. Uses interactive style notes that we have to fill in. He takes role almost every week. He seems to love what he does. I would take a class from him again & highly recommend him.
This dude is one cool prof. Dr.Stout is friendly, down to Earth & caring. He tries to uplift & encourage us too.Lots of discussion & pairing up activities. Excellent guest speakers. Crazy (good) videos. A fair amount of writing (short reaction papers) which he READS. Lots of feedback given on papers - tough grader though. Final was optional.
Overall he is a great teacher. He requires attendance & reading the texts (2 books for this class). Likes to bring in lots of tests for us to do so you will learn alot about yourself. His class tests are pretty hard so plan on studying. He is very friendly & easygoing. He wants us to apply the material to our classrooms & life outside college.
Two books are required for class. All lectures cover material that isn't easy to get from the readings. Paper, presentation, 4 tests, participation and attendance contribute to grade. Tests are m/c and essay. You HAVE TO study for the tests and pay attention to the study guides to do well. Pretty fun overall.
Dr. Stout is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is interesting, funny & uplifting. He actually reads our papers & gives real feedback. He requires attendance & expects you to do the reading in the text before class. He does alot of hands on stuff in class & discussion too. His 1st test was tough but fair. Highly recommended!
A very nice guy. Easygoing style but tough on attendance & his tests are very challenging. You HAVE to do the reading & prepare well to do good on his tests. Focuses on applying what we learn in the classroom or program. Likes small group discussion & lots of practice activities. Shows good videos & has guest speakers who are interesting.
Dr. Stout is a great teacher who really genuinely cares about his students. Make sure you attend every class though becasue attendance and participation are weighted heavily in your grade. Do all the papers (which are 2 pg opinion paper) to get easy points. Tests are tough, but fair. One presentation, make sure to be very creative though and to no
Tough on attendance & tests but otherwise an excellent teacher. Tries to learn everyone's names & is very relaxed & friendly in class. Wants his classroom to be a comfortable learning environment & shares alot about himself to get that started. He is definately one of my best Profs ever & I would love to take a class from him again if I could.
i should have recieved a B+, but, tardies brought me down to a C-. if youre not in class ON THE DOT, he wont let you take the quiz (worth 20pts) and you get 25 points off of your grade. even if you make it 10 seconds late he refuses to let you take the quiz and marks you tardy. being on time and IN CLASS everytime is CRUCIAL!
Dr. Stout is the best professor i've ever had! He made class so interesting and applied a lot of everyday situations to working with teens. Attendance is mandatory and he has a strict policy, but you'll look forward to going to his class! Unless you're one of those students who just is too lazy to go, you'll definitely enjoy it and learn ALOT!!
He is a great Prof! Good use of powerpoint, well prepared for class & organized. Tries to add more info than just rehashing the book. Lots of interesting outside experience to share. Good small group activities. Seems very flexible on assignments too - very openminded. I would take more classes from him!
Highly Recomended by previous students! Some topics more intersting than others but he definately makes you want to come to class each week. He uses powerpoint but alot of class involvement too. Videos are incredible. Papers are somewhat easy but thought provoking. Tests are tough but if you do what he asks you will do fine. Nice guy, he cares!
He has alot of experience in the field of addictions. Very straight edged when it comes to drug use. Talks more about teens than adults. Very flexible with assignments. Motivational. I would take another class from him.
He is a great professor, I took him two years ago and I have to say I am those kind of people that remember the good effective professors. He is fair, he is for his students, if you need recommendation letters he will be the best one to go and ask for one, just be sure to be doing good in his class.
Very unique, he comes to class happy & is enthusiastic about what he teaches. His good sense of humor & passion for what he teaches tend to draw us in which makes time fly. Tough grader on papers. He is the only Professor I have ever had that asks his students to evaluate him halfway through class & shares the results with the class! Recommended!!
This guy is a hard grader but he will be your favorite class probably. Very inspirational.
took online class. worst class ever. subject seems easy to learn but on tests he asks dumb questions that dont pertain to the whole picture but specific details. lots of online discussions. not recommended
Focuses on teens. Hardest class I ever loved! Challenges ur comfort zone every week. "Chg urself to be a better teacher." Uses 4 books and u WILL read them all. U have to discuss the reading each week in class. Requires participation in "hot seats", a presentation, a big paper & weekly blogs. Best class I had in 4 yrs of college. Recommended!!
By far the best one teaching this class. Very applied style, kind of different? Brings interesting psych tests and stuff to almost every class to make it fun. Sometimes talks too fast for powerpoints but other than that, he is really a cool Professor. Requires attendance, a couple big projects with papers. I would take him again if I can.
This was the best class I ever had in college! I learned so much about myself and about good teaching. He is very friendly, personable, and inspirational! I wish all college teachers felt the way he does about standards for education. He will push you to take risks which will cause you to grow as a person so get ready!
I truly enjoyed this class. I learned a lot about addiction and mainly about myself. His honestly and kindness truly inspire me. I hope to have him again in another class in the future.
Such a cool class! He teaches from a Psychologist point of view but understands we're future teachers. He brings in all kinds of psych tests, checklists & rating scales that u can take urself or give to ur boyfriend. Not only did I learn about psych testing & observation but I learned about myself, my family & my relationships. Taking him next sem!
This guy is very laid back, friendly and actually kinda funny but he's also very professional and challenging too. Takes roll in every class. Requires good writing skills and tests are hard. If you do the reading and come to class you will learn alot. I am looking forward to taking his 325b class next semester. He is one of the best I have taken!
Looooove this professor. I took him for CAS310 too- that class was more difficult than this one. He is very knowledgeable about adolescence and very personable. Do not miss deadlines or class though. He does not accept late work under any condition. He is very strict about his rules. Super nice guy though and makes classes fun!!
This guy is very unique - hard to describe. He requires prompt attendance and does not accept late work. He is also one of the friendliest, kindest, most motivating and uplifting professors I have ever had in college! He really makes you think about yourself. This class was definitely the highlight of my semester and my college career!
Great Prof!good lectures and explains with clarity. fun class!:)1 of the best classes i took at CSUF.BEWARE:attendance is mandatory and he HEAVILY empahsizes participation(i participated in most clases& he gave me a D,which brought my A down)2 get an A in participation u literally have to raiseUrHAND/talk in EVERY CLASS!bcITaffectsUbigTime
Not the best class required for this degree but he tries to make it fun by bringing in psych tests for us to try out. I have learned some new things about myself as a result. Got to check out a psych test at the library from a secret file & play with it for a couple hours - that was fun. Overall, he's a nice guy. I would take him again.
I have learned more about myself & helping/teaching others in the last 14 weeks of school than in ANY coure I have ever taken in 4 years of college. Dr. Stout is one of the hardest teachers I have ever had & I love him. He demands a lot and I have worked my butt off to perform for him. I wish I could take more courses with him!
Dr. S is crazy (good way). He seems happy every day & motivated me to get more involved than in any class ever. His classes are thoughtful, challenging and fun. He is strict about due dates & takes roll EVERY day. He pretty much requires participation too. Tests are tough but if you take him your gonna like him. This will be your fav class!
GREATEST TEACHER EVER!!! I go out of my way to get into his classes because he is the only professor I have ever taken who actually cares about his students and their success. Tests are so-so but he gives you all the info necessary, including study guides.
He is an amazing teacher and really cares. I would take any class he teaches!
Interesting course. His attendance policy is horrible, but the class is fairly easy. Tests are not very hard and assignments were pretty easy too. He talks a lot about himself and his class was a bit dreadful to attend at times, but just do your reading and attend class (even if you fall asleep bc of how boring it is) and you should do well. :)
Based on feedback from others, he seems to be the best teacher of this class in the department. He tries to make it fun and interesting by applying the material to our lives and working with kids. I have many friends who are bummed he is not teaching this class next semester. I will definitely take him again!
Dr. Stout is an amazing Professor. He is inspirational & he cares about his students. He is a tough grader & requires attendance so not an easy class but WELL worth it. His lectures are VERY interactive with lots of peer and class discussions so don't be shy. His papers are fun to write too, they get you thinking. Highly recommended!!!
This class is pretty difficult. Dr. Stout finds a way to make it bearable. Attendance is MANDATORY, points deducted for missing class. Even though he has detailed power points (he posts them all at the beginning of the semester), the textbook is very helpful. So READ! Only thing I can complain about is his paper-grading. Apperantly length>content.
Great teacher, makes the class interesting. You take a lot of psych tests for personal enjoyment. 2 papers, grades really easy; don't turn them in late! 10 quizzes on the reading; READ and review the ppts. Lowest quiz is dropped. Read, it'll really supplement your learning. 3 tests (including final). Final isn't cumulative.
Dr. Stout is an awesome person. He's super laid back and wants you to do well. Quizzes are what killed me. Read the book if you want to get all the points for those. Tests are reasonable. He covers everything you would need to know in lecture. The subject is horrible, but taking psych tests and having a knowledgeable prof will help you survive it.
My fav prof in 4 yrs of college! His teaching was the most incredible I’ve ever received. His passion for the work, & for teaching us about the work had a huge impact on me. It was evident that he truly cared about each of us students, as well as the people & topics we discussed. He had a lasting impact on my life, and I am so grateful.
I took him after realizing that teaching was not for me. I felt extremely lost about as my future. Because of that, I didn't understand why I felt so moved by the topics we covered, but they resonated. The books & discussions have stayed with me. My weekly blog is filled with quotes & lessons that I’ve carried with me since graduating. Amazing!
Took him because I heard everyone else talking about him. WOW, he's amazing! I've never felt so comfortable in a college class. I've never joined in the discussion so much. Amazing lectures - he makes the subject interesting & always has time for questions. Tough tests & required attendance but totally worth it in my book. So glad I listened!
He was the only 1 teaching this class but I took him because his former students said he was cool. They were right! He's not easy, but you'll feel good in his class, in fact, you'll look forward to his class. He has a great sense of humor while remaining professional at the same time. I registered for another class of his next semester!
To use his term, this was the hardest class I ever loved. I learned SO MUCH about working with at-risk kids while learning about myself too. No powerpoint, everything is experiential. You must do the reading & come prepared to discuss it weekly. He is passionate, caring, supportive, funny, helpful & has an amazing life story. Thank you Dr. Stout!
He is clearly very passionate about working with teens. Teaches from a psychological angle which is interesting. Requires 6 short papers but you have a lot of choice in terms of what to write about because they are about you (mostly). tests are hard but fair. You will like going to his class. Make sure to raise your hand & participate!
Without a doubt, my favorite professor and class of the entire CAS major. Would take him again in a heartbeat if I wasn't graduating in a week! He really cares about his students and the kids he helps. He's fair, understanding, and really inspires you to make a change in the world.
Dr. Stout's approach to everything is so down to Earth that he makes everyone feel comfortable. We had some really great class discussions that he facilitated almost every week. It was fun to be in his class, I actually looked forward to it! He is a tough grader & does take roll most of the time. i hope I can take him again in the future!
He introduced himself on the first day & I could relate to him. He has had an interesting career & is crazy inspirational. I learned SOOO much from him in this class. Not just about the topic but about life in general. Professional stuff. Dress code & personal safety. He also does lots of class discussion but people interact alot in his class
He is not willing to work with you, and is not flexible. Most of your grade comes from homework he does not read. So, in a way its a very easy class, because you could write and say anything on your workbook and get full credit. test are harder but since your grade is 60% homework it really doesn't matter.
He was a mess. He obviously has experience, but he does not know how to teach the class. Nothing he said in class was on the test (the test is by the book). The one thing I did appreciate was that he brought in a lot of testing material for us to go over and experiment with. It was at least interesting. Read the book if you want to pass.
Everyone told me for many semesters that I HAD to take Dr. Stout & that the class didn't matter. So I took him for parenting and could see why everyone was talking. He is kind but tough. He is serious but playful. He seemed concerned with our wellbeing, in addition to what we were learning in class. Real. Definitely inspirational. I LOVED him!
I loved this class, we go over so many things, and Dr. Stout is an awsome person overall, You have to read since we discuss the reading each class meeting. I don't know why nobody on here mentioned the BIG paper we have to write? 12-15 pages, 10-12 journal articles, plus the 2 books. This is NOT something to leave for the night before!
He is clearly passionate about teens. He really seems to care about his students as well. He is very good at getting everyone involved in class discussions. He has a good sense of humor but doesn't cross any lines. Lectures tend to follow the reading closely which makes studying easier. Test are challenging but straightforward & fair. Recommended!
Dr. S is one of the nicest Profs I have ever met. He cares about his students and goes above and beyond. He's big on participation so don't be shy in his classes. You have to attend in order to write a weekly blog so you won't pass if you don't go. He will definitely expand your thinking about non profits & community service. Highly recommended!
Wow this class was interesting! He has a way of making everyone comfortable enough to get involved which makes class discussions excellent. He always had time in class for any question or comment yet still made it through his slides. Intelligent, honest, down to Earth, truthful, funny, challenging, demanding. Takes attendance. Highly recommended!!
Professor Stout was by the far the best professor I have had in my four years at CSUF. He truly cares about what he is teaching, he is personable, friendly and very understanding. He doesn't grade too harshly, but he does expect high quality work from all of his students. Don't be afraid of the presentation and long paper, he walks with you.
This class teaches you on teens and how to communicate with them. Unlike, most of the CAS courses, this is not about theory. Dr. Stout teaches you techniques on how to help and create a bond with teens. I definitely recommend this class, even if you want to be an elementary school teacher. It will open your eyes.
It's definitely a good idea to read the textbook for this class. Attendance is very important! Also, there are weekly blog posts that you must stay on top of. Tests are pretty tough but he is usually fair, such as throwing out certain questions
Dr. Stout is one of the best professors in the department. You have to work hard to earn your grade, but you usually know exactly why you got the grade you got. There were 5 papers in the class, but they were only 2 pages long. That being said, if you make the tiniest mistake on the paper, especially APA format, then your grade suffers!
Such a great professor. I took him twice in the same semester. His tests are kind of hard, but gives you a study guide, fill it out and you'll pass. There are several papers, but only 2 pigs double spaced. He gives super specific rubrics, follow them and you'll get good grades. I recommend taking him over his wife. Make sure you participate.
It's pretty well known that whatever you take him for is gonna be your favorite class that semester. He is genuine, humble, and caring yet professional and assertive while also being funny. His lectures will draw you in and make you want to participate. He loves class discussion & works to keep it real. He is very applied in his approach to class.
He is very unique. He actually asked us for input on our individual participation grades. He also asked us for input on our final exam questions - never had a Prof do that before! He's a tough prof but also kind, funny, inspiring, engaging, intriguing & caring. He has a powerful life story & isn't afraid to share parts of it in class. Recommended!!
His lectures are interesting, plus attendance matters and participation as well. He WILL knock off points if you're not there, or you don't speak up. Tests are not really easy, read the chapters and absorb the material. Make sure you know APA style, it is silly to lose points when you can just do it right.
I look forward to his classes every week. He is a hard Prof but worth the effort. He is inspiring to keep going. He really seems to care about his students. He makes class discussions fun and interactive. He is known among students in the program as one of the best in the Dept. I highly recommend him for any class!
This is one of the most organized online classes I have ever taken. He clearly did his work to put it all together before class. I appreciate that as some online courses are just minimal at best. I hear so many great things about him, I hope to take him in person someday. He responds to emails very quickly. he grades faster than others too.
This is the most amazing class I have ever taken. I have learned so much about myself while learning how to work with troubled kids. His class is VERY experiential. Every week we are interacting with each other and Dr. Stout. I don't really fear teens anymore & I can even see myself working with them in some capacity someday. That's a big deal 4 me
The best online prof I have ever had. In fact, I got more communication from him than I do my in person Profs. Easy weekly online platform for text reading & quizzes. They prepare you well for exams. Papers are about really cool topics. I seriously hope to get in another of his classes next semester or the one after. Students seem to love him alot.
This dude is different. I learned so much from him this semester. He is honest & open with his life. Shares great stories in fun lectures. Wants everyone involved in class discussion. He's a tough grader no doubt but also totally fair. The Virtual Child assignment was one of the funnest things I have done in college. Take him if you can! No regrets
He is one of the most amazing professors I have ever met. He is caring, committed n involved with class. He is funny too. Probably why his classes all fill up first. He is a tough Prof, he has high standards but everyone seems to work hard for him and really love him. I had him 3 times ( 325, 394 & 490) those were my favorite classes in college!
He does't care about his students & the workload. He has so many assignments thats its hard to keep up. Every Sat 1-2 assignments due, every Mon online homework assignment due, and then weekends where we should study for the exam it still keeps all the assignments, so there isn't much time to study for his exams. UGH!! I WILL NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN!
This class is amazing. His lectures are interactive and fun. He makes you want to go to class. In fact, his class will be your favorite in any semester you have him. I just wish his classes weren't the first to fill up every semester so I could take more of his classes. He seems to be HIGHLY recommended by just about anyone you ask. A nice guy too
This was my favorite class this semester. So much life experience to share! Most lectures were more like group discussions. He likes to look for applicability of the material in our lives. Has a good sense of humor. He is a tough grader & tests are not easy but his class is worth it. I would recommend him to anyone who asked.
I am so glad I took his class. I am even reconsidering which age group I want to work with now. His class is not easy but quickly became my favorite this semester. Do the reading & come to class & you'll be fine. The class was very interactive. He has a great sense of humor. You will learn a lot from him. I would take him again without a doubt.
This was by far my favorite class I have taken at CSUF. He is an AMAZING professor and his lectures are very interesting. I was always excited to go to his class because I would learn a lot. Participation does matter but it's not too hard because the lectures can get pretty engaging. There are 3 tests total and weekly quizzes due.
There are quite a few two page papers in this course to help you practice APA style writing. The textbook is a requirement for this class. His lectures are fun and he is a very caring professor. One final group project on a topic of your choice at the end of the semester.
Dr. Stout is really passionate about the subject. I really enjoyed his lecture style he often incorporates his own experiences. There is one group project and the exams are more difficult than you would originally think but they are still manageable; study guides given. He's also really approachable. Had to buy online access for text.
This is the best online class I have taken. He has everything organized and even has a weekly to do list! He communicates with us a lot via announcements and emails. Gives great feedback on APA Style. In fact, I got an A on our 2nd exam this weekend and he sent me a personal email to congratulate me. How cool is that! Dr. Stout is a real gem!!
Favorite class this semester. 2nd time taking Dr Stout. His lectures pretty much stick with the text. He facilitates lots of class discussions which makes the time fly by. He has a great sense of humor and is very open about his life. You get to raise a virtual child. Tests are hard but fair. I learned so much in this class. Peer Mentors were great
Absolutely amazing teacher ! Very passionate about the subject . Just finished his class this week and would take him again if I can:) one thing that did mess me up in his class are his due dates the homework is assigned in fandoms days so you have to be on top of that ! Other than that super amazing !!
Great Professor! His lectures are always entertaining and he shows lots of passion for this course which makes the class even great. There are 3 exams and 2 online assignments that are easy. Blogs are due every week which is pretty much relating lectures to your life. Would like to take another course with this professor again!
Just finished probably the best online summer class I've had in 4 years. He's not easy but he's worth your effort. So caring and supportive of his students. He's very organized and his online class was excellent. He's strict on due dates so plan ahead and get things done on time and you won;t have any issues with him. He's very inspirational too.
Dr. Stout is easily one of my favorite professors that I have taken over my 4 years at CSUF. CAS 325b has been the most organized online class I have ever taken. With weekly emails on what to complete, to feedback on all assignments, Dr. Stout wants to make your learning experience as smooth as possible. I would highly recommend Dr. Stout!!
This is a fun class! He has so much experience to share and he's very engaging. Each class starts with small groups discussing the reading. There are weekly blog posts you have to do (you have to be in class each week to write one though). He helped me get a placement site. I can't wait to take 490 with him next semester!
He is a serious, yet funny Prof. Clearly he cares about his teaching and his students. He is very supportive of our learning and this whole fieldwork experience. Lot's of small group work and class discussion but it's all relative to our reading, volunteer sites and future jobs. Time flies in his class - he makes it all fun and easy. Take him!
This is not an easy class but he is an excellent Professor. It seems anyone who takes him is glad they did. You will work in his class and you will learn. His lectures are fun and engaging.
Amazing Prof that makes hard class fun. He always looks like he is having fun up in the front of class. Never felt so cared for by a Prof in all my years of college. He likes his classes to be interactive so you will be talking in class or chatting with neighbors more than most classes. Tests are challenging but study guides are available.
Dr. Stout is a great professor. He teaches so well, and I have learned a lot about teaching and about myself from him. Every week I come home blown away by what he taught us. His class is fairly easy. If anything, the homework assignments are almost busy work, so do not fret about the amount of assignments.
Dr. Stout is one of the best professors in campus today. He cares so much about his students and always make the class super exciting. Im sad that I only took his class in my last semester, because he really changed my mind about at-risk adolescents. If youre taking 490T, try to enroll in his class!
I had him for 325B as well and loved him, so much that I took his 8am class, I NEVER TAKE MORNING CLASSES! He made class so much fun! Time flys by so quickly and he constantly keeps you engaged. Homework assignments are easy, a term paper, group presentation, no exams except a final, but final is optional if you are content with your grade! NO +/-
Papers, tests and discussion boards. Online text with weekly reading quizzes. He taught me to write better too. Really fun, engaging lectures. His style is very uplifting and student focused. It's no wonder why his scores here are so high. I will take him again if I can!
He's great. Papers due w exams, but it's not hard or long. Discussion boards + weekly hw using Mcgraw. You'll love him
He is not easy but he is worth it. After taking his online class its no wonder everyone says he's the best. He's very organized and has his act together. He does not accept late work so I lost some points there (but it was my fault for not checking the calendar). Tough grader on papers but at least he reads them. I hope to be able to take him more.
2 exams you have to read the book to pass. Discusses reading each week but goes where class wants to go. Circles up into group to discuss practicum experiences. He is the most unique Prof I have ever had. He really cares about his students and it shows. He had Course Assistants that were great too. Highly recommended for sure! Take him if you can!!
I wish I had taken him sooner. He is amazing. Probably one of my best Professors ever. Not the easiest but really amazing. Clearly he cares about his students as people and not just in his class. He's also pretty funny in class. His life story is an inspiration to me and others in the class. I wish he taught 494!!
Easily the best Professor I have ever had. He is challenging yet caring and compassionate. You will learn about working with troubled kids but also learn about yourself. He is funny but very professional too. A great role model for being a healthy human being. You do have a big paper but he helps you through the process in steps. It's not so bad.
Hands down my favorite college professor. I wish he could train other professors on how to be caring, inspiring, motivational, and reasonable with their students. He made our 394 class more personal and worthwhile than I thought it could be. Very encouraging and teaches many amazing life lessons. A true humbled and caring man. Best prof!
Although his course was easy, Dr. Stout was not a professor that I would ever take again. His grading ways need to be improved.
This class was nothing short of amazing. Well organized with weekly to do lists. Inspirational content. Incredible videos. Meaningful assignments and opportunity for self reflection. Probably the best online class I have ever taken by the best professor I have ever had. I hope to be able to take him in person sometime!
This was such a positive class. Both the content & Dr Stout. He really cares about what he teaches. It is clearly evident that he cares a lot about his students too. There is a good deal of work in this course but none of it too hard. It is very organized in weeks and clear what to do. I recommend Dr. Stout to anyone that can get into his class!
Without a doubt, probably the best Prof in the entire CAS Dept. Amazing life story. Inspirational, caring, humble. That's not to say he is easy but if you want to really learn, take him. He is probably the most recommended Prof in the Dept too. His classes fill up fast so you'll be lucky to take him!
Professor Dallas Stout is truly a legend. He is one of a kind and I do NOT regret taking his class at all. He CARES about what he teaches and cares about his students. He is super understanding. You will not regret taking this class. The course requires 3 books, annotated bibliography, reaction blogs, and a paper. He is not a tough grader at all!
Unless you want to drop your GPA, avoid him at all costs. He only finishes grading our papers AFTER the SOQs are filled out. Coincidence? I think not. Very harsh grader with the paper. Docks 28 points for incorrect APA style and doesn't even read the paper properly when grading it. He deducted points off sections that I had included in the paper.
Overall, good class. You have to attend and actively participate every class to get a good grade. The class was interesting and fun, but beware of the paper. You will get 100% on the first 2 steps and then receive a 65-70% on the final, even though previous portions were not initially corrected. Very disappointed in that regard.
Dallas takes points off like they are nothing. Take care to not miss a single class because he will take off FIFTY points for two missed attendances. He also grades papers absurdly. This class might appear to be easy but you will lose a lot of points easily.
My friend and I took this class for our majors. At first he seemed like someone who is caring towards his students but ended up being someone who has no empathy and takes out his bitterness on our grades. Even if you are sick, he won't care about you. Just take someone else.
He is probably the best Professor I have ever had. This class was nothing short of amazing too. He taught me a lot about working with troubled teens and I believe I grew in the process as well. Most students say he is the best in the Department. If you are lucky enough to get into one of his classes, you will know why. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed this class so much, I came back to be his Course Assistant the following semester. He is incredible, one of the best. Only 1 small book in this class. Everything else is provided in class. There are a couple papers but manageable for sure. A very positive class, everything is uplifting! I would recommend him for any class.
Not an easy Professor but oh so worth any class of his you can get into. His usually fill up first. That should speak loudly of how good he is. His classes are organized. Every assignment is posted on day 1 & grading criteria are clear. He is firm with his rules and fair with everyone. Down to Earth, straightforward style of teaching. Engaging!
This was the best class I ever took. He has a way of putting everyone at ease which made our class discussions incredible. I wanted to do the weekly reading just for the class discussions! 3 books. All small but powerful, amazing reads. Incredible guest speakers and videos. This was the class I never wanted to miss. He made it worthwhile!
WORST professor I ever took! He preaches positivity and being kind to each other during class lectures and in his announcements, but his grading is exceptionally unfair. You will lose your straight As because of this class! DO NOT take!
Definitely one of the better Profs in the Dept. Everything was posted & available on day 1 (if you like to work ahead). Every assignment was posted with clear instructions and grading criteria or rubrics. I really appreciated his preparation & presentation of class. Not easy but very straightforward and fair. I followed directions and got an A!
I was one of the highly fortunate ones to be able to take him 3 times. All 3 classes were the best I ever took in college & he is the best Prof. He is tough but kind, caring & real. You will learn from him if you put in the effort. Weekly blogs, 1 presentation & 1 big term paper. Lot's of class interaction. Take him if you can, you won't be sorry!
When it comes to teens, Dr. S knows his stuff. He teaches it with passion too. Very engaging style. Tough grader but assignments are relevant and applied. He is motivating, friendly and down to Earth. I would very highly recommend him for any class he teaches. He is a popular Prof in the Dept so his classes tend to fill quickly. You will see why!
He begins most classes by sending us to breakout rooms to discuss the reading. It really helps me to understand the material better this way. Those discussions become a springboard to whole class discussions. His style is laid back, yet engaging. Sucks we cannot do internships but he is doing his best to help us learn. Shares lots of opportunities!
Very positive class from a very positive Prof. Everything was clearly laid out including weekly to do lists. Weekly discussion boards & a blog that he or a TA regularly respond to. A few written assignments with good instructions. I wish I had found him sooner, I would have taken more of his classes for sure.
This was absolutely the best class I have ever taken. Incredible text & books which I read all of. Incredible guest speakers. Incredible videos. Incredible Professor. Wish I could take him again but I am graduating.
This has been my favorite class this semester. Even though it's online, it felt like really attending every week. Just about every student had their camera on the whole time. Very interactive with frequent small group breakouts & in class role plays. All course material was timely and relevant. Clearly one of the best around. Highly recommended!
I did not really care for this professor or class, the videos and books we read I did not find them interesting and I feel like I could have learned a lot more information about youth at risk. Class was weekly blogs, Annotated bibliography, term paper, participation (100pts), final. if you do not have the same opinion as him, don't share it lol
It sucked that we could not do community internships but that was not his fault. He made the best of it, and did a great job of teaching us relevant, meaningful information we can actually use out in the real world. All assignments were applied and he even responds to the weekly blogs. I wish I could have met him in person. I would take him again!
He was my only Prof this semester that met with us on camera every week. It felt like a real class! I've never participated so much but he just makes it easy & comfortable. Everything about this class was amazing from the books to videos & guest speakers, activities. He's really good at facilitating class conversations. No PowerPoint in this class
Excellent Summer School Class. He had all 5 weeks up by end of 1st week. That was great to work ahead. Very organized. Clear rubric for all major assignments. Weekly to do lists were helpful. Very responsive to emails. Fast turnaround on grading. He is an excellent Professor. I wish I could have taken him earlier for another class. Recommended!
This was an asynchronous hybrid class but we met on Zoom 8 times. He always had a topic & taught us interesting stuff. When he was done, we were done (he didn't keep us to fill time). I wish I had taken him sooner. Now I know why everyone rates him so highly!
This was the best class I have ever taken. He is so knowledgeable yet down to Earth. I have never seen a class so interactive & he did that with his style. Interesting & fun lectures, fair assignments & grading, his tests are hard but also very fair. I hope to be able to take him again sometime. I couldn't get into his class next semester :(
Few classes actually changed the way I look at something, but this was one of them. I have a whole new respect for teens & I want to lift them up now. Text is very cheap. All assignments are reelevant & thought provoking. He gave audio feedback on the papers & quick responses to emails. Lots of fun peer interaction on Boards. Dr. Stout is great!
Such a fun and easy class. You only read one book for the whole semester and some handouts. This class is an easy A, but you have to do all your work. Make sure you read the directions for everything and make the word count for the assignments. He does NOT accept late work. Two projects and the final is one essay question.
Dr. Stout is the best, most inspirational Prof I have ever had. He doesn't read off PowerPoints in this class. He teaches experientially so get ready to speak up and be involved in the process. You will learn a LOT about yourself as you learn how to help troubled kids. Everyone talks about this class & I'm so glad I got in!
This was a fund class. Lots of discussion. He really makes you think about new things. He's also funny and inspirational. I wish I had been able to take him sooner!
Take Dr. Stout!! He is passionate about this field, students, & family. No practicum hours. The class is revolved around discussions. DO THE BLOGS every week! BIG group project. 10 page paper don't be scared lol (GO TO THE WRITING CENTER FOR APA FORMATTING & CONTENT). Hot seats activities. 3 books to read that will make you cry BUT worth it.
This was a summer fieldwork practicum course. Stressful to get a placement but otherwise a good class. Lot to do in 5 weeks but he's very organized & had everything set up before the class even began. Easy to work ahead. Responds quickly to email and texts. He comes very highly recommended and I can see why. I would love to take him again for sure!
By far the best Prof in the entire Dept. If you can get into one of his classes, you will see why everyone says to take him. Great lectures that draw everyone in. Meaningful assignments. Life changing!
Dr. Stout is so incredible. He brings the reading to life in his lectures with the most interesting stories. All his assignments are very applied and nothing felt like a waste of time in this class. It's no wonder that everyone says to take him. His classes are hard to get into because he is so popular or I would take him more. he is very friendly!
Awesome prof! Weekly textbook assignments (says 1.5 hours but just look up answers in book, it takes 20min each wk). 2 short & easy essays. 1 big group project/presentation. 4 exams (all on quizlet). Bit of work at the beginning of semester, but eases up. He responds to emails so fast & is very kind and interesting.
One spark interview paper with a teen and a research paper as well as a class presentation. Clear with deadlines and late work is not accepted. While this class is an easy A, you cannot slack off and breeze through the material. Make sure to put in actual effort. This class gave me a new perspective on how to work with adolescents.
I love Professor Stout. Please take him if you get the chance. He will have you laughing out loud while providing a fine education.
Dr Stout is so much better than any other Professor in the Department. He is competent & confident but also caring and human. His down to Earth approach to teaching & straightforward class set up is wonderful. Very clear assignments with everything posted before the 1st day of class. There is a reason everyone says to take him. You won't be sorry!
This was a great class other than the stress of finding a placement. He helped me quickly every time I reached out to him. The course is set up & ready to go at the start. All assignments are very clear & applied. He's a very fair grader but generally does not take late work. Everyone says to take him. If you do, you learn why. He's among the best
This is the most amazing class I have ever taken. Dr. Stout is the best Professor I have ever had by far. Probably one of the top at CSUF. His scores here do not lie! He is so open about his life experience and pushes you to connect yours to your future work. He wants high participation & makes his class safe to get involved. Highly recommended!
Dr. Stout has made such a huge impact on my life. I highly recommend this professor if you want to change your perspective about teens and yourself. This class discusses real-life issues that gets you emotional. This class has changed my life forever.
Everyone has something nice to say about him and they are right. The Canvas class was straightforward and easy to use. Assignments were clear and included rubrics. He is tough but also very fair. Lectures were fun and informative. He really cares about his students and it shows. Definitely one of the best profs I have ever had!
I took 494 as a summer class. He communicated with us a lot, even before the start of the semester. I followed his advice and had my placement set up before the 1st day of class. You still need 60 hours which is challenging in 5 weeks. There are weekly assignments but everything is up in the class on day 1 so I was able to work ahead a little!
This is a good class to take in summer but have your practicum set up before the 1st day of class! It's hard to get 60 hours in under 5 weeks. There is also weekly reading and a good deal of work due a couple times each week. If you are motivated & focus on timelines, instructions & rubrics you will do fine. You can work ahead in his class to.
You use Connect for assignments and exams (exams taken in class on your laptop). His directions are kind of vague, so you might need to email him sometimes. He is quick at responding. Lecture in class is mandatory, he tries to make it fun with his personal stories, and he takes attendance. There are about 3 papers in total, he grades easily.
Dr. Stout is probably the nicest Professor I have ever had. He is kind but firm. He is not easy, but clearly cares very much about all his students beyond the class topic, learning & assignments. Very open to questions during interesting lectures & class discussions. Everyone said to take him, now I know why. I'm going to try to take him for 2 more
Dr. Stout is amazing. He responds to email faster than any Prof I have ever met. He also allows texts! He helped me find a site & also helped me with a sad breakup this semester. He really cares about his students. This class was so fun because we interacted with each other a lot. It was so cool to hear about what everyone else was doing!
Summer classes are insane but Dr. Stout did his best to make it survivable. In fact, he had everything open the 1st day for all 5 weeks. This helped me to work ahead a little. He grades fast, gives good feedback and is very available to meet on zoom if that's your thing. He's also amazingly fast to reply to emails. I can see why he is so well liked
Stout makes the summer workload manageable. Everything's posted upfront so you can work ahead. unstuck study and the provided textbook were great study aids. Highly recommend this organized prof!
This class was so good. Dr. Stout is one of the most positive people I have ever met. This class is all about positivity & how to use it to help teens. It's thought provoking. He will challenge you to look beyond yourself to see teens as people too. I think everyone could benefit from taking this course. I want to take him again if I can.
He has high standards for assignments but is a very positive guy. He uses a very old text for this class but it's cheap. It is also full of great info and life lessons. I wish he would have taught this class in person this semester. I want to take an in person class with him now. Everyone says he is one of the best. I can see why now.
This was such a fun class. Every week his lectures were interesting and interactive. He clearly cares about his students and has a good sense of humor. Have someone proof read any paper you write for him & you will get a better grade. I would recommend him.
I could have done so much better in this class if I would have just tried. His expectations are so clear. Everything is graded exactly by the rubric. He genuinely cares about the well being of his students. Lectures are mellow and easy to follow. Some of the material is challenging but I think that is just the curriculum, not him. Best prof at CSUF
Professor Stout required a lot of assignments and does not accept late work. His grading criteria is not very clear. However, he is not a tough grader. As long as you complete an assignment, he will give you credit.
I learned so much from this class. He is a very student centered Professor who really cares. Exams are hard but he gives study guides. Uses an online text with weekly reading quizzes. 2 short papers & a letter. Easy to see why everyone says to take him! I hope to be able to take him again in the future.
Absolutely the best Professor I had in 4+ years at CSUF. He responds to email faster than anyone else. I had an issue at my site one day & had to call him. He actually answered the phone & helped me out! His lectures transcend class content and focus on life/professional skills. He's a tough prof but also kind, down to Earth, funny, & approachable
Although he has rubrics for his writing assignments it felt more like his mood. He also graded the final which was an essay on a "modified curve" where he compared it to other classmates' essays and decided which one was an A. Study guides weren't helpful, assigned readings every week.
He told us on the 1st day of class that if we did well enough in his class that we would not have to take the final & he kept his word. Many of us worked hard & did not need to take the final! That alone was just cool. Good lectures. Interacts with class. Answers emails & texts quickly. Clearly cares about his students. Very fair. Recommended!
