Excellent teacher. His linguistics textbooks are impossible to read, but if you take good notes, you should get an A out of the class. He's really funny, and he's the son of Elder Dallin H. Oaks. Really great guy - taught me a lot. Not the easiest tho
Entertaining, but that's it. Lacking substance, hostile and condescending to those who don't agree with his conservative religious views.
This class was the best organized class I had in collge. The assignments prepare you very well for the tests (which are not too difficult).
Good teacher. Nice guy. Tests fair. Listen in class.
great class, i loved the material and the tests were very doable. prof. oaks is funny and likable and he is very well versed in his field. i recommend oaks for linguistics
Excellent. Superb. Funny and very fair. Try going up to talk to him after class, he's nice and very smart. This was my favorite class so far at BYU.
Awesome teacher-he is funny, I never fell asleep in his class. The textbooks can be boring, but take good notes in class and you will do fine on tests. He is really helpful - go see him during office hours, he'll help you and he's awesome to talk to!
Oaks is the best. He's extremely helpful and has a love for the topics that is simply contagious. Take him!
He goes off talking about "unrelated stuff", and then we rush through the MAIN/IMPORTANT stuff:( His tests are pretty good.
Extremely good teacher. This was my favorite class at BYU. It wasn't a hard class at all but I still learned loads. He's also dang funny too.
Knows the subject matter, loves it, and gives lots of examples to help the students understand the different concepts. He is very good at applying everything he teaches to real life. I loved this class. It made me seriously consider majoring in linguistics. Oaks is a great professor.
Bro Oaks is pretty much the Elang guru. He is very knowledgeable about the material and has love for the subject and for his students that takes a dull subject and makes it exciting. Everyone I've talked to who has taken this class from anyone else hated it. But take from Bro Oaks and you'll love it
Very fun class, changed my minor so it is now pointless, but I still enjoy it. He's really nice and funny and makes sure we understand. Great guy.
I absolutely LOVED the class, particularly because of Dr. Oaks. He's a great teacher who makes learning fun and who inserts plenty of examples into his teaching to make concepts clear. He's always willing to talk out of class. I wish I could have taken more classes from him.
I loved him. I changed my major because of him. He loves what he is doing and makes you love it, too. Seriously, take this class from him.
since this class is required for english majors, many of you probably like grammar and spelling and things like that, and if so you will want to kill yourself during this class. sitting through it every day makes me want to die.
I loved this class. He teaches practical applications of abstract principles. Great teacher.
Professor Oaks is a decent teacher. The material isn't necessarily the most interesting, but he is passionate about it and thus it is easy to learn. His tests are ridiculously easy if you just show up to class and pay attention.
I loved this class. Professor Oaks was interesting and even funny at times. He made subjects that could have been dry very quite the opposite. He's the type of professor that you learn a lot from even though he's really easy. You'll do well on the tests if you study his worksheets and go to class
I'm not really interested in linguistics, but his lectures are really interesting. He makes it tolerable with all of his dorky (but funny) jokes. He makes it easy to do well on his tests if you just read his book and take good notes.
Dr. Oaks is a great professor! His class is incredibly entertaining and he's really passionate about the material. I hate the subject he teaches, but I enjoyed his class.
Dr. Oaks is a fabulous teacher! He makes the subject matter really interesting and entertaining. The class isn't too difficult, just study the lecture notes and keep up on the out-of-class readings and you're golden. Great teacher!
I really enjoyed this class. Dr Oaks is hilarious, and his passion for the subject makes his lectures really interesting. He is a character which makes the subject more fun. I'm not doing anything in Elang, but his class got me rethinking that.
Fabulous teacher. Everyone should take his class! I am a music major and enjoyed every lecture.
I took intro to linguistics from him and LOVED it! It is a really fascinating subject and Dr. Oaks is a great teacher because he's so enthusiastic. I thought about changing to a Linguistics major after taking it. Only thing that bugs is sometimes he gives too many examples and beats the concept to death, but at least you understand. Take good notes
I really enjoyed his lectures. They were entertaining but did cover the material well. There were 3 homework packets that were very time consuming. Tests required studying but were easy if you did. He tells you what you should memorize for the test. I didn't use the text a lot- but you'd be up the creek without access to it.
This class is so much fun! Prof. Oaks is an entertaining teacher and makes sure that all the students understand the concepts. He provides good examples for everything, and likes to tell jokes!
Oaks is very intelligent, but not great at teaching on an introductory level. I was consistently lost during the first half. He is often caught up in irrelevant material during lectures and kept us late 80% of our class periods.
He's a really fun teacher who's enthusiastic about his job and he does like to talk a lot. All the below comments are true. He assigns a lot of readings, but you can just skim them and be fine.
Taught everything very clearly with definitions and examples. Gave study guide for tests. Tests generally easy if you study well. Semantic collection and presentation are P/F and not difficult. There's a 3-4 page paper. Uses textbook in class extensively. If you pay attention in class you can skim when doing reading assignments.
Interesting
I really did not enjoy this class at all. He has NO structure whatsoever during his lessons and they are all over the place. No clear directions on the paper you have to write, but you always know where how your grade is becasue its on a strictly point basis
Rushed through lectures and would exceed time most classes. Grades are based on 7 assignments (paper, midterm, final, 4 packets) and midterm/final heavily weighted. Paper instructions are vague/poorly explained. Hard to make up and the class did not have a blackboard until more than halfway through the semester.
The first 4 weeks we didn't even do anything, and played catch up the rest of the semester. Everyday he gets off the subject, or gives 50 examples and beats the concept to death. Then for the last 15 mintues he talks so fast that you can't write it down fast enough. He holds you after class every day without fail. Use the TA's for assignments!
Best semantics class in the world! Dr. Oaks is hilarious, and I would take every class from him if I could. He is a little unorganized, but his lectures are hilarious!
excellent class, amazing professor. if you love the english language you will be inspired. VERY low textbook use--class lecture fascinating. highly recommend
Oaks is awesome. He loves the subject, which made class enjoyable. He really knows what he's talking about and is interesting to listen to. If you're going to take this class, take it from Oaks!
I love Oaks - he's crazy. Don't take him too seriously. The class is easy and he makes it interesting. Lots of chances for extra credit. He has the tendency to ramble, but he's funny. No need to read the book if you always attend class and pay attention. 2 tests, 4 homework assignments, & a paper. I highly recommend him.
This was my favorite professor at BYU. Very interesting class, interesting material, and fabulous teacher.
He's the best! Some may say that he gives too many examples, but that's just because he cares enough for everyone to understand what's going on. He's extraordinarily helpful, especially if you take the time to ask him. I recommend any class from him. He really cares about the topics he covers, and it shows in his teaching.
Very knowledgeable about the English Language, but tends to ramble. You never get through all the material, which might be frustrating, but if you're able to let go of that the class is quite enjoyable. He also grades quite leniently and is very willing to help and talk to you.
Excellent, very interesting
Professor Oaks has been my favorite professor I have ever had at BYU! He is extremely knowledgable and makes his subject exciting. I changed my major because I liked his class so much! It's not a hard class if you actually take the time to study the material, and Prof. Oaks is always willing to talk to his students.
He gives lots of examples, which makes class feel rushed on occasion. I would have found that annoying, but his stories are funny enough that I really didn't mind. He obviously cares about whether his students understand the material. I stopped reading the textbook; he covers the same material and is more entertaining anyway.
Great teacher. Gave plenty of examples, had funny stories, and graded fairly. Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures were pretty good. There's no busy work, just a packet every couple of weeks and the tests. I've switched to ELANG major because of this class.
I like Professor Oaks as a person, but as a teacher he rambles...a LOT. Another thing that bothers me is that he is condescending. He will begin sentences with "You wont understand this..." Well duh. Why do you think I'm taking the class? He treats you like a child, which, as a college student, annoys me.
I died of laughter every day in this class! He does ramble a bit and is kind of disorganized, but it didn't bother me. He is passionate about the subject and taught me to love the language. We only had four assignments and the TAs held sessions where we could ask questions. He tells you what are on the tests. Take this class!
Has passion for the subject! Was one of my favorite classes to attend. Super interesting, he gives TONS of examples, and is very willing to help. I hope to take another class from him.
I could have understood all the information no problem without lecture (and I usually don't think that). Besides that, it always sounded like he was yelling at us; he was always assuming that we wouldn't understand a concept (which was strange, because the concepts are so straightforward). He told us what "AKA" stands for, something everyone knows.
This class changed the way I look at language. Oaks is an engaging, clear, and funny lecturer. I thought the class was extremely easy and that he went a tad slow and rambled some (but his rambling was often just as funny, if not useful, as the rest of the discussion.) If you take notes and go to TA review sessions you'll get a good grade.
He really knows his stuff. Good, easy class, a great introduction to the major. Attendance is mandatory, though.
Interesting. You can tell he enjoys his subject.
I never did the reading for this class, but I learned a ton. Each day I took copious notes, and could not help but share everything I was learning with my friends and family. Dr. Oaks is great, and the subject matter is even better. Take the class just because it will change your world.
I took ELANG 223, 326, and 324 from Professor Oaks. He is the best professor I have had at BYU! He gives many examples and makes sure every student understands a concept before he moves on. He has a good sense of humor and loves to tell jokes, so class is always more enjoyable. Also, he usually has three big assignments and two or three tests.
You can tell that he really enjoys his field. He is willing to help
This was one of those rare classes where I found myself sad every time class ended. I loved going to this class. Even if the subject itself isn't incredibly interesting (I find it somewhat interesting), Dr. Oaks is very entertaining and enjoyable.
Wonderful teacher. Everything he taught was so absolutely clear. I think that he could make even somebody who hates linguistics enjoy his class. Assignments are all super useful, and tests aren't terribly hard at all. If you go to the lectures, you'll probably get an A, and enjoy the class, too.
Oaks is a great man. But he is a bad teacher. He's a bit goofy but condescending (i.e. thinks you don't know common sense kinds of things) and goes off on tangents way too much. He always runs out of time and then goes through the material really quickly in the last five minutes of class. The homework and tests were detailed and hard.
Dr. Oaks is a nice guy sometimes, but he is often condescending. He rambles a lot. The class was way too focused on his own research. I probably won't take another class from him after this class. I felt like he was always behind and didn't know how to make up for time. It was incredibly bizarre.
One of my absolute fav professors at BYU. If you come to class and take notes, you will ace every test. He does go on tangents but they're fun and he always gets back on track. I wish he taught more classes because I think he's absolutely stellar.
He teaches pretty much out of the textbook most of the time. He's really entertaining though, and has lots of funny stories to tell.
Dr. Oaks was a good professor, but he did get long winded sometimes, and very easily distracted. We did not review for tests in class. I always felt like the class was behind schedule. Another problem I had was that Dr. Oaks did not use LearningSuite (online system).
I think that with another professor I would have had a lot more fun. Yes, Professir Oaks knows his stuff. But since he just lectures from the textbook most of the time, I could still do pretty well and basically sleep through class. Because attendance is required at a high penalty for missing. Overall I did like the class though.
Barely any homework - there are assigned readings, but you can pass without doing them. Pay attention in lecture, take notes to study, and be interested in the material and you'll be fine. Never ever skip class without getting the notes from someone!! He tends to get off track and answer every single stupid person's question. Know the TA.
It is true that he sometimes goes on tangents, but he truly does love what he teaches. Learned a lot from this class, and about the English language and how great it really is. Only a few assignments during the whole semester and follows the idea of having one "Midterm" and not like three or four.
Dr. Oaks is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is crystal clear, funny, and really smart. He gave more out-of-text-book examples of class material than any professor I have taken from. If you attend all the classes, take good notes, and study, you will probably get an "A."
Dr. Oaks made me want to major in English Language! He's the best professor I have ever taken from. Those who don't take his class are missing out! I learned so much in his class, and his teaching is so clear, humorous, and engaging.
It was a thrill to take structure of Modern English from Dr. Oaks. He is incredibly knowledgeable , and he is a phenomenal teacher. For how much one learns in Dr. Oaks' class and how much one enjoys them, his classes are a must-take.
Dallin D. Oaks is an incredibly knowledgeable yet entertaining teacher. He knows his stuff and teaches it with great examples that make things easier to understand. I have taken 223, 326, and 324 from him, and have enjoyed every one. The content of 324 was a little harder, though. I would recommend him to anyone. He making learning enjoyable.
Prof. Oaks is great! This was his first semester teaching pragmatics, but it was pretty fun. He knows his stuff and if you need him out of class, he's willing to help. I would definitely take a class from him again.
Prof Oaks was a great teacher. He may say that he always runs out of time but at the end of the day, you learn all that he wants you to. Go to the TA for help, they'll be there. TAKE NOTES IN CLASS AND READ THE READINGS FROM BOTH TEXTBOOKS! Almost all the test questions are from either class or Oaks' own textbook. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper
He's a good guy, but not a good teacher. He fell so far behind on the curriculum that it was honestly stressful. He was pretty sarcastic, though knowledgeable. Big assignments that are worth most of the grade. Tests were fair though.
Every class is a lecture, with 4 assignment packets (easy) and one 3-page paper (also easy). Tests are mainly fill-in-the-blank (know your terms and concepts). Two textbooks: Fromkin covers theory and if you attend class you don't have to buy; Oaks is a fun read and its content WILL be on tests. Oaks illustrates his lectures with lots of examples.
Dr. Oaks is a fantastic professor. He makes his subject super interesting and, while lectures can be a lot of new information, he uses plenty of examples and makes the subject accessible. GO TO CLASS. If you do, you will be fine. He is always willing to help and the actual coursework was not difficult.
Dr. Oaks was a kind, if frazzled, professor. He got sidetracked a lot, giving examples and stories, but we did cover all of the material. The class itself is really interesting. Massive homework packets (8 pages) but if you go to the TA review you'll get all the answers you need. Tests were tough and the paper was brutally graded. Good class though
Professor Oaks knows what he is talking about, but is often side-tracked and gets really behind fast. He's also consistently late to class and late in releasing us. For tests, he gives them in class but they are long and hard to finish in the 50-minute time frame. There are very few other graded aspects to the course, which makes it difficult.
He's a solid professor. Very old school--if you want the notes, you have to be in class. Nothing is online. TONS of insights every lecture!!! Definitely not boring. He's also funny in a not-on-purpose way. I didn't really use the textbook much; being in class was enough, but there were a few questions of the test I would have missed without it.
Pretty dry. He has a detailed outline that he reads from in class, and you have to write it down verbatim - but he doesn't share his outline so sometimes you get a bit lost as he drones on. Tells a lot of anecdotes - tangentially related to the material. There are only a few assignments, so as long as you do them, you can get a good grade.
Awesome class! He tells the best stories and is just so kind. It's easy to find him outside of class if you need help. Such a good class and easy to do well if you attend class and put forth an effort.
I LOVE Professor Oaks. Any chance I can, I take a class with him. He's kind and easy to get help from outside of class. He loves what he teaches, and it makes it easy to follow along. He is a storyteller for sure.
Professor Oaks really is a good professor. The class is graded on 4 assignments, 1 paper, and 2 tests. If you do the reading and take good notes in class you will do great.
Oaks is a Linguist and has a lot of knowledge about this subject. He shares almost too much info and there is never enough time in class for him to finish. He is super old fashioned with structuring class and ever uses Learning Suite. I did not find his teaching way helpful. He doesn't like answering questions because he never has time.
Dr. Oaks can be a little intense when he lectures BUT it's not bad and he knows the material and does a fantastic job giving multiple examples and explaining the principles. I honestly felt like I learned and understood everything as he went through it in class. His assignments are not bad at all. Go to class and study with others for an easy A.
He gives interesting lectures with lots of examples, but he didn't plan out the semester well so it always felt like we were either rushing or spending way too long on certain parts of the course. He takes time to make sure that students understand the material though. Going to class is super important.
Old school, doesn't use learningsuite - don't expect your grades to be updated regularly. Fairly straight forward, but take notes during lectures (I took shorthand notes on most everything he said, and compared notes w/ classmates). There's only three hw assignments, they're long and are best done in groups. Tests were fair!
Dr. Oaks is an excellent professor! His lectures are very interesting, he gives a lot of good examples, his assignments are pretty easy and he's very fair about eveything. Defintiely going to take more classes from him in the future!
Professor Oaks is a really funny guy. He clearly loves linguistics, so much so that he has a hard time managing his time during lectures. He has a very clear grading system as well as clear study guides, and even a little bit of extra credit.
Professor Oaks is definitely one of my favorites. He lectures heavily but explains concepts very well. You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches because he is always wanting to say more than what he has time for. He's very funny too!
Looooved this class. Absolutely must attend in order to get a good grade, but it's way fun, so it wasn't a big deal.
He is a very good professor but get ready to have to rush to your next class. He look at the time and see that his time is up and continues on another concept. Other than that he is a good teacher who is really passionate and ready to help you learn.
Prof. Oaks is a very knowledgable man, and I learned a lot from him. However, you really need to come to class and pay attention. He doesn't use Learning Suite for hardly anything, and your grade is based on very few things. Go to the TA sessions, show up, and take really good notes. Class is really the only way to get the information you need.
Professor Oaks is a talker. While he is a professional and is very knowledgeable about linguistics, he tends to ramble, which made it difficult to stay awake sometimes to be completely honest. I highly recommend reading all the materials, asking questions, and teaming up with people to complete the assignments. Tests (2) are difficult so study!
If you pay attention in class and review your notes, you will be well prepared for tests. Classes are completely lecture based, with no visual aids and lots of examples. Test questions are taken directly from lecture material.
He spends most of the time telling stories that vaguely relate to the subject matter. Most of those stories are very uninteresting and it felt like a waste of time. He reads out of the textbook but attendance is mandatory so you can either do the reading or come to class. Overall, not a very good professor. Class isn't hard though.
lectures are pretty dry and boring. he doesnt use powerpoint, handouts, study guides, or any kind of visual aids when he lectures. it is entirely up to you to listen to him talk and take notes. he easily gets off on tangents and tells stories, which are funny, but our class was chronically behind schedule as a result. tests are very difficult/long.
The whole class felt like him just rambling on for a few hours each week. If you want to gain anything from the class, you need to take your own notes. Otherwise the material will be impossible to learn. Probably the most ineffective teacher I ever had and that was frustrating.
I really liked Prof Oaks' lectures! If you're interested in linguistics, I think you'll find his stories/examples to be engaging and interesting. The assignments and tests are not bad, but make sure you take notes on a computer because you will not have time to handwrite everything - I recommend taking notes on just about everything he says.
There aren't a lot of assignments to balance out the tests so doing well on them is important but they aren't hard if you listened in class and took good notes. The things he tests on he will always say multiple times, not hidden in the lecture. Always entertaining and engaging. I learned a lot.
He basically makes you memorize the textbook.
Brother Oaks is a great teacher. He does go off on tangents a lot but they are pretty interesting and usually pertinent to the material. There are two exams (both were online for this semester). Some of his assignments were pass/fail which helped my grade. A lot of the test questions were straight from the textbook. Very nice guy.
The course was mostly readings, writing a short report on the reading, then going to class and listening to him re-hash what was in the reading. If you understand the readings the first time through, class time is kind of a waste but still mandatory. Content really wasn't difficult at all. He goes off on long tangents *very* regularly.
I'm not a huge fan of Dr. Oak's teaching style because he's difficult to follow. He tends to go on long tangential storytelling sprees that end with you cramming 3 week's worth of test material into 2 days. The textbook is VERY helpful, especially for exams. You lose a lot of points for skipping class. No papers. Small presentations and assignments
I absolutely LOVE dr oaks. Ive had him for 3 classes now, and is by far my favorite professor. He cares about his students so much and he tells the BEST stories. You can also easily distract him from his lectures by asking about his dog (remember that). He makes linguistics interesting, and if you study youll do fine on tests. Take from him!!!
I loved taking this class from Professor Oaks! He makes the material really interesting. There are a lot of things to remember in this class, but it's so interesting that I want to know it anyways. If you listen in class you won't be surprised by anything on his assignments or tests.
Personally, I really liked it and the class really helped me fall in love with linguistics, but if you don't click with his teaching style, it's going to be rough.
Dr. Oaks is kind, and very accessible outside class. He only has 4 assignments per semester, so they count for a lot each. He's super scared of technology, no Zoom, barely got powerpoint, no online papers, hardcopy everything. He really loves his subject and you can tell.
Doesn't know how to use technology and refuses to learn. Told us upfront that he can never get through all his lecture material and made it our responsibility to learn almost 2 classes worth of material right before finals week. Never finished class on time. Nice guy, but easily one of the most frustrating classes I have ever taken.
Prof Oaks is a fantastic professor! He lectures a lot (& occasionally goes on off-topic tangents), so it's crucial to take notes. At first I was worried about having 4 assignments a semester, but he sets it up so you learn as you do the assignments. If you have questions, he will gladly answer them & provide you with resources. Would take again!
Dr. Oaks is amazing--his teaching style is a bit different from most professors, but he's fair. When grading, he is very generous and forgiving when you show that you tried. The midterm/final was a little challenging, but as long as you prepare, you'll do fine.
Professor Oaks likes to go on tangents a lot, I feel like we spent 15/50 minutes each day on something irrelevant. The course isn't hard, but it is hard to be motivated to go because it fedels like you don't learn a lot in the lectures.
Prof. Oaks is very passionate about his field and students. He is engaging in his lectures and tries to make the class easy while still being useful and informative. He holds study sessions for every assignment and exam. He adds extra credit if the class is lower in grade than he thinks it should be. He tries to remember every student's name.
This class is inherently a little hard, and he grades on very few things. This means that if you're struggling, it can be hard to pick up on the problem until it's too late. He's not a bad professor, but if he doesn't fit your personal learning style, that can be a real issue. His lectures are interesting though.
Dr. Oaks is a great professor. The class has 2 tests, 3 projects, and a final presentation. Attendance is heavily graded but with freebies and extra sick days. Dr. Oaks' lectures are great! He's engaging and knowledgeable. I think he's hilarious. Tests aren't bad - we had reviews before. He points out test questions in class, so no surprises.
His bark is worse than his bite. He'll warn about what you need to know for tests repeatedly, then the test isn't that bad. He constantly asks if you're following his lecture, which might seem insulting, but he likes his students to do well. Lectures are long, he puts notes online. Reading isn't necessary to do well, but knowing ctrl F is helpful.
Attendance is mandatory unless you're sick. Textbook is "required," but I never read it. He puts everything in the slides. Only 3 assignments and 3 tests, that's the full grade. But his tests are forgiving and his assignments are free 100s if you show effort and go to his review. He is all paper, no tech. He's not offensive at all, just intense.
I recommend Dr. Oaks. Other reviews say he goes on tangents and runs out of time to teach everything, which is technically true, but not gonna lie, the material is really easy to catch up on. He's a fair and forgiving grader, and I found his lectures to be engaging, even if sometimes he tended to shout when he lectured. He's just in his element.
I adore Professor Oaks! A professor that truly wants you to succeed and someone that really loves what he teaches. Accessible outside of class and is willing to help in any way possible. Does go on tangents fairly regularly, but he covers all the material and it makes the class more interesting (in my opinion). Loves what he does, and loves you!
Dr. Oaks is a good man who truly cares about his subject. The way he taught class was absolutely infuriating. We never ended on time, he often went on long tangents, and expected us to teach ourselves material when he couldn't cover it. We did not run on schedule well. I would not take a class from him again.
Dr. Oaks is passionate about linguistics, though his lectures can meander at times. The workload is manageable with 4 assignments per semester. Unstuck AI was a great study aid alongside the textbook.
Have to put on your conservative cap for this one. He's very "old white Christian man" coded, but that doesn't make him a bad person, just stuck in the past, like your grandpa you love even though he says cancelable things. LOTS OF TANGENTS but they were kinda fun and he's very caring. He wants you to do well and everything is pass/fail.
Professor Oaks is good at teaching and his lectures and projects are engaging and fun. He does a good job at bringing the Gospel into the lessons (though he can get opinionated at times). He ensures his students enjoy and understand the material and I'm glad I took from him. My one complaint is that sometimes his lectures go too fast.
Class isn't too hard as long as you pay attention, do the assignments, and study. Took so long to get through SO FEW slides because he would repeat himself in different ways and go on unrelated (but interesting) tangents. Had no problem with going 1-2 minutes over. Expected us to learn stuff on our own if there wasn't time. Good, kind guy, though!
