I loved his class! He is very into his career. His goal is to help you understand bio the best you can. I would recomend him to ANYBODY that is taking bio either for a major or not. I took him this past summer and got an A. He keeps his word. What he tells you to study is wat you will find on the test.

He's is a good professor but he doesn't teach anything i took his class in the fall08 in central campus i got a "c" He's always in a hurry to complete the syllabus.very fast,but you can pass his class you should prepare the syllabus in advance to get an "A"

Dr. McWhinney was a good teacher! If you go to all the lectures and labs you will make an A. He makes it clear in class by telling you the "big ticket items" that will be on the test. You must study, and a lot of the test material comes from diagrams in the book.

hE IS A GREAT TEACHER. AS LONG AS YOU COME TO CLASS EVERYDAY AND BRING HIM COFFEE YOU WILL PASS.

Knowledgeable, helpful, friendly 95% of the time, and tells lots of stories. Although he makes struggling students come up to the board and explain lesson items, he does it to encourage students to study and take the class seriously. He uses ppt and provides e-notes, but make sure to study the textbook if you want to ace his exams. Recommended !!

Good teacher - Very knowledgeable and pasionate about microbiology. Tests were mostly from his powerpoints and sometimes from the review questions at the end of the chapter. He tells you what "big ticket" items you need to know for the test. He does go off topic talking about his life sometimes, but that didn't bother me too much.

Mcwhinney has been one of my favorite professors so far. He's very knowledgeable about the information and although his class is heavily based on powerpoints he makes it a point to keep the class interested. Does like to talk about his life but it helped make him more approachable. He's helpful when you ask for it.

He is very nice and funny guy. he is always making sure that everyone understands very well, and he tells personals stories that helps you picture the material better. His test are really hard and tricky, but everything he lecture is there. Always be aware of big ticket items and you are almost done. I learned alot and I had a blast on his class.

I was intimidated taking this class, but from the beginning he took the time to explain difficult concepts, especially vital "big ticket items". Quizzes prepare you for the exam. If I didn't understand something he would explain in various ways. I like how he applied concepts and theories to real life situations.

Dr. McWhinney definitely motivates students to excel, not only in class but in life. He gives everyone an opportunity to pass, but the class is not easy...you have to STUDY. Go to class and complete your lab book. He sometimes takes long to get grades back, but the longer it takes, easier he grades. GREAT Teacher! Take this class.

Memorization is the key...lots of open ended questions on exams but he goes over each in detail, tells you exatly what the test will be over. He also grades on a curve. Study and you will be fine. EASY A

His quizes are just as hard as his exams. Lots and lots of memorization. He is disorganized especially in lab, so its up to you to keep this organized. He is late to cless more than halth the time. He will curve but not everything. Made an A but it was stressfull

AWESOME!! He gave every student all the right tools to succeed in his class. If you didn't pass, YOU didn't want to. You have to study; not a free ride. He thoroughly explains everything. He relates difficult topics to life which makes it easier to understand. He has a "father-like" attitude; be prepared to be challenged in class. Must take!!!!

He scared us with every quiz, but it prepared us for each test. Don't rely only on his lectures though, you HAVE to read the chapters. You'll do lots of drawings on the quizzes and they'll reappear on the test. Stressful? Yes. Payoff? Excellent. He curves! It's the hardest A I ever made, but I know like biology because of him.

took his bio 1401 class. lessons are hard to follow but if you read textbook with his lectures, it will help. NICE TEACHER he's very personable. tests are text and lecture based. just GO TO CLASS and you will be on his good side! overall, good class better teacher!

Well vexed on the subject. Gives quizzes that prepare you for the exam. Establishes a cordial atmosphere for interactions between students and professor. I highly recommend taking a class with him.

Prof. McWhinney is very friendly and does his best to help his students, but I find his exams and quizzes to be impossibly difficult. He does curve, but even so the class is struggling. Great teacher, would recommend for anyone! Typically very helpful, but he is extremely scatterbrained, so make sure that you keep up with your grades, mastering bio, and especially your turned in assignments!!!!

The professor is great and very funny he always trys to make you laught you do have to do the labs and lab book but he goes over it with you and he does give quizzes online you do have to keep up with it because the syllubus will change but overall a good class first test is in class then the rest on line take himm i got an A

Took Prof. In the fall. i got a B. As long as you do your work and he will help you. he tells a bunch of funny stories about his life and the class always had a good laugh. Make sure you do your biolab assignments and HW. attend class and read the book and pay attention to the PP.Last thing, this class involves a lot of memory and study

He is probably the best teacher to take for your first biology class. Extremely helpful and will drop the lowest exam. ALWAYS gives extra credit on tests and goes over all the quiz's to make sure you got it. Also tells you exactly whats going to be on the test. I would definitely take him again if I could.

Professor Dalton is an excellent educator. microbiology is not an easy subject but professor Dalton knows how to teach, what you learned in class you will not forget. if you complete the assignments and pay attention to every detail in lab you can have and A in this class.

Dr. McWhinney was great. Start of class was intimidating but after awhile, he assures that Microbio would be a piece of cake if you came to class, and did all labs, homeworks, and reading. He cares for his students and works with you as well. 2 lab exams, 3 exams, and the final. Attend class, and do labs, as well the lab manual and you'll do fine.

He is an awesome teacher and really funny. Read the chapters before the lecture and see what he talks about in the power points he uses to teach with... that will help on tests. Sometimes gets off topic and talks about his farm and family members but its always hilarious. He prepares you well for exams. I am taking him for micro next semester!

Prof McWhinney was super dope. He's very personable; his care for his students to succeed is genuine. His lectures are informative. There is a lot to remember so be prepared. The book is a must have; you'll want to review with the online option. Only criticism: He can be unorganized at times.

Dr. McWhinney is a Tier 1 quality professor. He engages the class and explains the material in ways that could make even the dullest student understand. I went in nervous that I was going to not understand anything, but that feeling quickly subsided. If anyone fails it's because they chose not to study. He also has a very charming accent.

Must pay attention and look up you tube videos because he does fly by the lectures as if we already knew what he is talking about ! prepares you for the test but does have a habit of not opening the mastering pearson assignments on time. Gives a lot of life lessons, sometimes it feels like having a heart-to-heart with your parent. He's a good professor and will make you work to learn the material - the test reviews were vague, making me study everything and study well. I made an A but I spent a lot of time on his class. He wants to see you do well - I recommend him.

Dr. McWhinney is super funny! He was suggested to me because he gives thorough test reviews, which is true! But the way he reviews for the tests is by giving a graded quiz. So, beware. But his tests ARE his quizzes. The way he grades is up for question. I would for sure take him again. I don't mind going to class at 6pm for him.

He talks a lot and uses family experiences as an analogy; however, he still gets through the material. We had some open book quizzes as a last minute resort. If you try hard he will attempt to accommodate you and help you pass. Very funny and helpful when you do not understand.

McWhinney is an awesome instructor!!! He lectures in a way to make you really understand what he's teaching. His tests are hard, but if you study, you shouldn't have a problem. He will NOT let you fail if you put the effort into his class.

I took him for both micro lecture/lab and it was the first stress-free semester I've had. he's sometimes late to class, especially for test days. He gives plenty extra credit opportunities and he cares about his students.

Dr. Mcwhinny is an amazing professor. do not expect the class to be easy ( i mean its Microbiology) but he is ready to explain over and over just to ensure everyone gets the subject, he also creates an avenue to improve your grade by making you do some extra credits. 2 tests and graded lab manual The class is easy and he makes it even easier. all you have to do is participate and when the tests roll around they're super easy and just shows pics of things we did in class and asks what it is.. he is AMAZING and i would take him again 100 times over. I got an A on everything and science is hard for me

Quiz sometimes shows on test not always. Materials arent bad. Hes a good, intelligence professor and its fun BUT ITS FAIR FOR HIM TO BE LATE 30 mins on test day and then end the test another 20 mins early NOT FAIR at least give us the time he took away or show up on time on test day. Its not fair that his tardiness effect Our time.

Professor Mchwinney is the best micro professor!! He makes class very understandable and easy. You will be hands on most of the time with labs its pretty easy once he explains. My class loved him! Never gave us a hard time and he asks us how we are and he wants to connect with his students. Take him if you want to get a good grade & put in work.

Amazing professor. This was the best lab I've taken. He demonstrates everything before we do things on our own, and he is very funny and caring. His lab practical's were very easy, and he does a mock exam the week before the test. He tells you everything you need to know, and doesn't worry about the content on lab reports too much. I took this course online on a schedule. He is prompt and obviously loves what he does. Expect an existential crisis every class lol. He is just trying to prepare you for your future. He loves when you participate in his questions, sometimes picking on the same people because of their willingness to answer. Easy A. 5 exams and a dept final.

He is good at making students understand the classes better as he explains them slowly. Great professor, great lectures however he is not very tech savvy. He also does not really reply to emails so if you have a question ask it in the class! If there is assignment or test due date changes remind him in the class or he ain't gonna change it.

Amazing professor, very easy A as long as you do the work and pay attention. His class is the easiest class I have taken in a while. He loves to joke around please don't take anything to heart. There were 3 tests total 1 final & 2 practicals there was also a group project (super easy). There was barely hw but it was due at the end of the semester.

I took the Microbiology lab for Summer 2023. Dr. Dalton McWhinney is en exceptional lecturer. When joining his class get ready to be hands on. He ensures that all of the students leave his class knowing the material. He is very approachable, and very patient. Refrain from burning bacteria! I recommend him for any course you will be taking!

A lab class that doesn't have lab reports until the last 3 weeks and my class was expected to print the whole lab book for the reports. He only glances at the report for completion. He is talkative and the labs are easy and he doesn't care if you mess up as long as you try again. We had a group project that was manageable.

I took him for an online class during the summer and he was super easy, friendly, and understanding. His lectures are not heavy they are smooth running, don't think about it and take him.

Professor McWhinney is a very good professor! He does talk after the class time tough but not that much. The only assignments given were on Pearson (21 chapters). Each would take about 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on how fast you are. Quizlet definitely helped through a lot! Also get graded on roll-call attendance, 4 exams, 1 final exam.

Great professor. Can be talkative, but he relates lecture to real life. Offers extra credit, very patient, and allows students to make mistakes. I took him for micro lab and lecture....he aligns the material for lab lecture.

Ask questions and gives extra credit in class. Had print out 15 lab reports put in binder checking for completion. Overall caring professor who want to see his students succeed and actually learn and remember information. Cons: Does not respond back to emails. Professor McWhinney makes this lab class a breeze. He's quite talkative but really cares about student learning. Attendance is mandatory, but he's lenient and gives plenty of extra credit. I found Unstuckstudy a great tool for study prep alongside the free textbook.

He cares about his students a lot, and if you ask him for help over a subject, he'll help you out. Funny professors but hard exams.

4 exams at school comp lab, no lock down browser, 1 final. online HW in pearson. not computer savvy. he cares about you. full of life stories, funny, silly. passing with 99% just by completing assignments. give you extra credit, give answer to extra credit the class before the exam.

10/10 recommend! His lectures focus on exactly what will be on exams. I highly recommend keeping up with the online homework assignments as they will help you pass exams, and they are pretty lengthy so don't wait until the last week of the semester.

Great lab, there weren't many tests, so it is important to do well on the few we had. He was nice liked telling stories and was an overall fun class.

I took this professor for summer microbiology lab and he was AMAZING!!! By far one of the most hilarious and intelligent professors I have met. He's over qualified for the job, so he explains things extremely well. He makes lab so so fun, and I honestly am so glad I took him. He's very understanding and personable as well.

He's very nice, but the lectures felt slow. Exams (4 exams = 40%) are okay and not a lockdown, with extra credit available. Assignments (40%) are due at the end of the semester. If you want to really learn, I don't recommend, but if you just want an A, take him. very nice and caring :)

Very nice, engaging, not demanding, gives extra credit. Not tech savvy AT ALL and always late. Canvas had assignments and announcements from a prior class/different prof that were never cleared out making it hard to tell which assignments were actually due. 15 chapters each w/ pre-lab, reading quiz, and a lab all due at end. 2 exams plus dpt final.
