Dr.Elys is a great professor. He is very interactive and posts everything on angel to study from. His tests are hard but it is a biology class so i guess its what you should expect. Study his power points and you will do great. Dr.Ely also gives you easy credit for assigments which boost your grade up. It doesnt hurt that hes a hottie either!!!
Elys classes are interesting and he explains to material well. He also has a very cute smile. If you want bio to be interesting you'll look foward to seeing him :)
good informative and clear on what is expected of his students approachable the way a professor should be
Awesome...That's all i can say! Extremely helpful =)
Really organized, always willing to help. Cool as hell.
The best professor u can ever have :)
Great teacher! takes time to help you understand material, personable and expects the best from you and utilizes all the tools at his disposal to help you be successful. Highly recommended!
My favorite! Really wants all his students to get an A.
he's the best biology teacher i have ever had. he was born to be a professor; most bio professors are just retired researchers. he has a passion for teaching and it clearly shows. if you know the powerpoints, you will get an A in his class. watch out for his lap paper
One of the best professors I have ever had. He can be challenging at times, but he is very fair with many extra credit opportunities. -BIO 102 tutor and past student
FANTASTIC TEACHER! TOOK HIS 6 WEEK BIO COURSE. EVERYTHING ON THE EXAMS, WHICH THERE WERE THREE IN LAB AND 3 IN LECTURE, WAS COVERED EXTENSIVELY AND THOROUGHLY DURING LECTURE AND LAB. THERE WERE ALSO MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXTRA CREDIT SO NO EXCUSE NOT TO DO WELL. READ THE CHAPTER, PAY ATTTENTION IN LECTURE, ASK QUESTIONS IF NEEDED AND GET AN A.
Dr. Ely is an incredibly helpful professor. His lectures are clearly organized and makes (perhaps) difficult material easier to learn. If you're afraid of having trouble with a biology class, try to take a class with him!
I took his class after not having taken a bio class in 11 years and I got an A. I'm not going to say he's easy, because it really depends on you. You have to log on to angel to get all your notes/assignments. Note: the BATCAVERN assignments must be done, they're not extra credit. A lot of the BATCAVERN assignments end up being on the test. Very down to earth and willing to help of you need it. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that needs a bio class!!
He was a great teacher and really explained things well. Hes one of those people who you can tell loves his job. Not only a great teacher, but a great person.
Dr. Ely is a great professor, he really loves biology. Pay attention and study and you'll do great
Dr. Ely is a wonderful professor. He is very enthusiastic and gives his students every opportunity to succeed. He recommends that you watch his vidoes before each lecture and if you do, nothing will be beyond your comprehension. I learned a great deal from him and so will you. Finally, a professor who knows how to make science enjoyable.
Dr. Ely was by far the best professor I have ever had. He was very down to earth and took the time to break things down and explain when something was difficult. He gave so many helpful papers out and his videos were amazing. Absolutely loved his class. I wish he taught more classes because I would go out of my way to take them!
Would recommend him to anyone. Very helpful and friendly and always tries to help. He tries to trick you and get you to participate in class. I was always the quiet one that never spoke out during class but he was always very talkative. His class is very easy and has great notes that I will be saving for future BIO classes
Dr. Ely is a great professor, especially if it has been a while since you've taken a biology class. Aside from good lectures ( not super boring) he provides notes and videos. The videos are short and to the point. Most of the time I was able to complete the homework assignments just by watching the videos.
Dr. Ely is an amazing professor. His lectures are always interesting to hear, you can truly see his passion in his work. I enjoyed his class very much. Dr. Ely is very supportive to all his students and motivates them. I recommend him to anyone who needs to take Bio.
Dr Ely gives more than enough resources for students to understand and learn what he is teaching. Loved his class and would recommend his class to anyone.
I took him over a summer course and what i expected to be a really stressful experience actually turned into a breeze. He is an amazing professor, gives clear notes and explanations. Offers extra credit with every quiz or exam we had and genuinely wants all of his students to pass. Pay attention in lab and lecture and you wont even need to read.
Took in 2014. Gives alot of resources to help you; especially his youtube videos that give you the answers to your hw. Alot of times I wouldn't understand the lecture in class & would watch the videos & understand. We sit & work in groups he wasn't very patient if you're a slower learner/group which was a disappointment but it was a night class...
Dr Ely is a good professor and he likes what he is doing; however, he is a tough grader and he gives hard tests. If you are fine with studying 8 chapters of Bio for one test, then go ahead and take him. He gives numerous lab quizzes and 2 research papers. He loves his students and he is ready to help them if they go and ask for it.
I will never take Dr. Ely again! I took him for BIO110 and I thought it would be nice to give him another try for the horrible experience in that class. However, that was the worst mistake ever. If you take his class be prepared for not having study guides for his tests, unclear writing prompt for the first research paper, and how unhelpful he is.
Great professor! Very helpful. Motivates and is very detailed. Obvious he loves his work. Would recommend to anyone. Gives you all the resources you need to get grade. Would take his class again.
Had him only for Bio Lab. Didn't really use the lab book enough to warrant spending over 100 dollars on it. good teacher, knows his stuff. Copy the notes he writes on the board and study it, if you do, quizzes are easy. The exams were pretty straight forward. There are extra credit questions on most quizzes and on all exams. Would recommend for lab
He's an alright guy. Ely doesn't give clear questions on assignments and wants you 'think' about your answer completely unaware that biology is objective and therefore everyone should have the same answer. He's also light on lecture so be prepared to read the notes and watch the videos. If you want a simple BIO course look elsewhere
Enthusiastic Professor who he really cares about his students. Be prepared to think for yourself and study hard for tests that cover many chapters. Don't let the research assignment wait, he expects a clear paper written at college level.
Dr. Ely is a very pleasant and respectable man with an immense interest for and knowledge of Biology. I enjoy how enthusiastic he is when teaching and with reviewing our assignements. I appreciate that he allows us to ask a lot of questions and sometimes, rather than give us answers, he directs us them. He helps you to reach you full potential!
Dr. Ely is a great professor. Very helpful and does the best to make sure you learn what you're studying. His grading is pretty fair.
LOVED Ely!!! He makes the material very easy to understand and I never seemed to get bored in his lecture or lab. He is open to helping you out outside of class during his office hours before exams, which is very helpful! Would def recommend him to everyone! he rocks!
Professor Ely is a beautiful man in every sense of the word. His lectures are interesting, his assignments clear and concise, and his labs are absolutely a blast. During my time in his class, I always felt like he viewed my not just as a student, but as a college or even a friend. Just be aware, his tests aren't bad, but you need to study.
If you want to be an RN this is the guy to take-Dr. Ely is absolutely phenomenal! If you're looking for an easy class take a different professor. But if you really want to learn the material and have an amazing professor-he's your guy! If you are willing to put the work into his class you will learn so much. I wish I could take him for more courses
Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Ely. Gives extra credit on test and quizzes, which are a lot of help. Gives notes and his own videos that he made. Cares about the students in learning the material. Informs students on what is due or when will tests or quizzes come. Gives two take home test, but you still need to pass lecture/lab test. I Recommend!
Dr. Ely is a great professor. He really cares that his students understand the material. He gives homework assignments every week and he has notes available on his website. He has videos online which are very helpful. His tests aren't too bad, but you need to study to get a good grade.
Out of all my classes this semester, taking Bio110 lectures with Dr. Ely was my favorite. He shows things really clearly and really gets one interested in biology. The homework is sometimes a little hard, but if you work on it, it's okay. Don't bother with a textbook though. I only opened mine twice, since he gives notes and links to his videos.
He's a nice guy but a terrible teacher. I got a 100 on all the test and lab practices but got a B in the class.
I took Ely's class for BIO 110 and ALL of his notes were given online and he teaches through his youtube videos. Which is good sometimes, but not for all the material because if you asked him a question his response would be "did you watch the videos?" Take this class if you like to teach yourself!!
Nice guy but the way he teaches wasn't the best for me. I had to adapt to his videos (which was difficult because I am a very distracted person) and he gives homework before reviewing the material on class. I just don't like the way he teaches.
Honestly one of the best professors at OCCC. Knows his material inside and out and is very good at explaining it. Assignments are a little challenging but they help out so much. Would definitely recommend to anybody taking BIO 102.
I took this course during the fall semester in 2016. Still the hardest class I've taken so far- but it could be because memorization is key to succeeding. Group work is required. He respects you when you're noticeably trying. My advice? Don't become too friendly with your group or you'll lean on them as a crutch. Study independently.
Fun teacher but tough. His lab tests are all memorization, but he does give some extra credit. He really knows his stuff and enjoys what he does. He also has YouTube videos he recorded of different lab sections which are really helpful. Fun guy and would take again.
Ely is the man.
Great teacher, and very passionate about biology . I learned a lot from him. Hes very helpful with study materials in lecture, but sort of lacking when it comes to his (very) extensive lab practicals. Lots of memorizing terms. Homework and lab notebook combines for 35% of your grade, which is great. Hard work pays off. Really enjoyed his class.
I thoroughly enjoyed having Dr. Ely as my Biology professor!! He gives you all the tools you need to pass his class, from lecture notes, videos, and slides to study guides that address all that will be on the tests. You can tell he really cares about his students and truly loves biology and teaching it. I highly recommend this professor.
you won't regret it
Dr. Ely Is so engaging and he is very enthusiastic about Biology. He puts a lot of effort into the class and he takes the time out to make sure that you get the material. He provides all the materials you need to pass including self made animations that he posted onto his youtube channel, handouts via Blackboard, and Notes from his Square Space.
I had him for a Summer Class. This professor is one of my favorite professors I have ever had He gives so many resources for you to use! Online Videos, Typed up Lecture Notes, PowerPoint Slides, Learning Objectives, Study Guide. And he makes BIO Very easy to understand. *His tests are on the harder side the questions are very open ended*
Amazing professor. Knows what hes teaching and does it well. Explains in such great detail and depth in such little time.
Professor Ely is by far one of the best professors Ive ever had. He is funny and very clear about the information he is teaching. He truly reinforces all of the information through homework, his youtube videos and power points. I wish he taught more classes that I needed for my degree because I would with out a doubt sign up for his course.
great professor for someone who struggles with science. He is clear, organized, and truly wants students in his class to succeed. Tests and homework were a bit challenging but resources were given to help. Truly a great professor who cares about his students and is not lazy.
A very nice teacher but a little bit intimidating to ask for help. Gives a lot of resources to look at depending on your style of studying. Definitely makes you work for a good grade, but he tries to help boast your grade towards the end with the final. Make sure to study EVERYTHING before the exams.
I LOVED my BIO 110 class with Dr. Ely. He had so many resources to learn from aside from just the textbook including videos on his website and a very thorough study guide that outlined all of the materiel we would need to know for exams. He also made the lectures very interesting. I aced this class and left with a better understandingof bio.
Dr. Ely is wonderfully organized, and loves Biology! He really gives you every thing you need to get an A in the class. To get an A is really up to how much you commit to the course and then really understand it by paying attention in lectures and using homework and all the resources he gives you. Also, class isnt mandatory but I suggest going!
Gives so many outlets to learn material. Class lectures, textbook, online animated videos, as well as textbook shortcut notes.
The best professor at OCCC for sure. He was amazing and I really appreciate him. He literally give you everything you need to pass the class. My best advice, start homework assignments asap and when you do youll be very prepared for the lecture material.
While he cared if u pass, his layout is what it is. He gives lots of resources which can be overwhelming almost all his students found his videos to be most helpful, which they are. He does give extra credit which helps but u will work for ur grade, and if u work for it u will get an A.
I had Ely for bio lab. I had him once a week 3hrs. For 3hrs we were all expected to sit down, read and teach ourselves. I paid lots of money for him to sit and grade my quiz that we got every week which was a ridiculous 30% of my grade. The only way to learn from him is his online notes and videos. Save $ and time by doing an online course.
Great professor and great guy 11/10
Had Professor Ely and thought he was organized and lectured well. However, the study guides do not fully prepare you for the tests which isnt fair. In fact, it says on the bottom not all info in this study guide will be on the test. If you watch his videos you should be fine.
Dr. Ely was my favorite professor this semester! He was very organized and gave so many resources. Im usually really bad at bio but he was really understanding and helped me outside of class. Great guy.
Very good, just a lot of work. He demands a lot but you will be prepared for every test if you pay attention and reach out to him during office hours.
I think he was by far the worst teacher I had at OCCC he was very rude and didnt try to work with me at all. I wasnt the only person who thought this way there was at least 10 people in my class who thought the same. Please yield my warning and do not take this class. It truly is awful. Ive even talked to profs that say how bad he is.
Dr. Ely is an amazing biology teacher. Although this class was tough plus Covid making it extra difficult I still manage to do okay. He does give out a lot of assignments and quizzes so be prepared good luck! this course is tough
Mid semester and I desperately felt the need to come here because I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS PROFESSOR WITH EVERY BONE IN MY BODY... he doesn't know how to teach! You literally sit on zoom the whole 2 hrs while he talks and talks and talks.... He doesn't ask you questions, he doesn't ask if you understand or NOTHING... don't take!!!!! I'm warning you!
The format of his virtual class is extremely easy to follow and stay on top of. His feedback is clear and he goes over every assignment. He lays out exactly what he expects so theres no guess work. As long as you listen to lecture you can get through any assignment he gives as he pulls from that.
Had him for online Bio 110 lab due to COVID. The way he designed the weekly lab assignments online actually wasn't bad. He's a fair grader and gives opportunity for extra credit. He also provides a ton of very helpful resources that helped me not only for lab but also for my Bio 110 lecture class. This lab course helped me understand things better
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! not helpful whatsoever, no extra credit. worst professor. just talks and talks 50 minute class and did not teach a lab. had to teach ourselves
Professor Ely is an awesome professor. I had him for lecture and lab. Due to Covid-19 I took both classes online, and he put so much effort to provide the tools and materials needed to exceed in these classes. If you study for an hour each day, submit your exams/assignments on time and pay attention to his lectures, surely you'll get an A.
Very difficult to stay attentive for 75 minutes as he lectures at you for the entirety of classes. Pushes evolution heavily. Nice person but tough grader, be VERY detailed in short answer questions.
He wasnt too bad, but he would get kind of passive aggressive when you would answer a question wrong in class, with everyone. He also wouldnt go into much detail about why things are, just that they are. Very tough grader, be as specific as possible with answers.
Dr. Ely is a nice man and has very high expectations of his students. His exams were 50% of our grade which were open book but still extremely difficult since they were heavily based on lectures. His lectures are long and when grading exams he's very big on the details mentioned in class.
I took Bio 110 with professor Ely as a prerequisite for a program. You'll get the most out of your class experience if you participate in the lectures, ask questions, and take really good notes. This won't be an easy A but he structures and prioritizes the content well. Be as specific as possible when you're answering questions on assignments.
Dr. Ely is a great professor, you can tell he is genuinely a good guy, and wants his students to do well. Although he assigns a lot of work, it isn't difficult and you are provided with multiple resources to help you. He's a tough grader but makes it very fair for students to do good. He responds to emails, and is very helpful when you need it.
One of the best professors I ever had! Highly recommend! He wanted his students to do well and is a good guy. He presents the material very clearly. Although there is a lot of assignments/homework they do help for the exam. He is a tough grader but if you pay attention during his class you will pass for sure.
If youre looking for someone to gaslight you with every question you ask or every answer you give in class, this is the professor for you. He single handedly is the reason I dont participate in lectures.
AMAZING teacher. Very involved , makes science easy and fun . His notes during class are super detailed. There is a 10 question quiz every time you have lab. Be sure to Thoroughly study ALL parts of a chapter before the test. Be sure to refer to syllabus for any question about the schedule.
Goes into too much detail without explaning the basic
Amazing teacher a lot of work but it is to your own advantage if you want to succeed.
Ely was great. If you regularly participate in lecture, you will have a better chance at developing a relationship with him
Dr. Ely cares about his students inside and outside of the classroom. His notes in the lecture and lab are excellent, making it easier to understand the material. He has clear grading criteria. He offered extra credit on the final.
Good teacher who gives lots of resources and clear explanations. Interesting material, as well as challenging. However, he's passive-aggressive and oddly, darkly ironic. Seems almost personally offended by questions. Gave up asking clarifying questions after a while, and looked for help elsewhere. Looked less forward to class over time.
Was a great professor definitely cares a lot about what he teaches and the course is cut and paste and it is great. I would take this professor again no matter the course
I didn't really like his classes tbh, lectures were extremely long and kinda boring. The exams/labs are worth 50-60% of your grade along with attendance. If you have a difficult time staying focused and doing your work last minute, don't join this class. The teacher wasn't bad but did get offended if you asked for help or a simple question.
He's a nice guy, but extremely passive aggressive when you ask a question. He assumes you should know all the answers. Very unapproachable. He pushes his political beliefs onto the class, which is highly unprofessional. Don't take his class unless you want to be annoyed every class.
really good grader makes sure you understand the material before moving on, labs are simple enough and straightforward with clear direction. isn't homework heavy. take him if you can
Professor Ely's class is one of my favorite classes this semester, he is such an attentive professor and makes it so easy to succeed. He makes sure everyone is included in group discussions and does a good job at getting everyone involved. I would definitely take a class with him again!
This professor was one of my favorites. My friend recommended him for me and I would recommend him for others as well. He wants everyone to learn and is very passionate about biology. During lab we are always doing something which I really enjoy. He includes everyone in his lecture topics and is always asking you questions to get you to learn.
Professor Ely was one of my favorite teachers. There was a medium amount of work that sometimes got confusing, but he was always happy to help. He cares about his students and is such a genuine guy. Would 100% recommend.
The work required is very clearly outlined. Just do the work and you will do well. Make sure to participate in lectures.
This class isn't easy, but it was a great experience overall. The professor is clearly passionate about biology, and it really shows. He does a great job connecting the material to real-world events and keeps the class engaged 100% would join one of his courses in the future.
