This guy is a HORRIBLE proffessor, he might be the worst teacher on the face of the earth. Confusing, difficult and arrogant. Keep away from this guy or as he likes to be called "the proffessor "
ain't so sure what the F is goin' on with him and his lecture...
WARNING: DON'T EVER TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!! Quiz every lecture which is 33% of overall grade. Lectures are not well-prepared and mostly confusing. It's apparent that he doesn't really understand the stuff well enough to be a professor.
Hell yes! Ain't so sure wtf is going on. He scare his students by making the assignments so freaking hard and tries to incourage them saying "Grades are curved. So don't worry..." wtf u kidding me! He explains even the easy concepts in a very difficult and confusing way. My nerves die every second I listen to his lecture.
oh my god what is wrong with this guy? yes his only words of encouragment are "dont worry grades are curved" does he not realize some of us want to LEARN something in econ?
<-- 'nuff said....
He has taken a class that shouldn't be too difficult and has managed to turn it into the HARDEST, MOST STRESSFUL class that I have ever encountered, and he keeps telling us that he doesnt want us to stress. I really cant express my feelings toward him right now
Absolutely THE worse econ professor I have taken at Cal and I'm trying to major in it. He makes little sense during lecture and always corrects himself through emails. Assigns hard problem sets that has NOTHING to do with the lecture. Mandatory iclicker quizzes that is only hurting my grade because the book he chose to use is horrible as well. BAD!
Horrible professor who is bad at lecturing because he doesn't prepare for it and often has to correct himself after the lecture. Chose a book solely because he knew the author and the book is almost as incomprehensible as Acland. Problems from the book also has nothing to do with the lecture or the reading. Bad professor, bad book, horrible decisio
Horrible professor who is horrible at lecturing who assigns problems out of a horrible book which don't relate to the readings or lecture at all. Overall, a horrible class to take if Acland is teaching.
Acland singlehandedly made me regret declaring as an Econ major. 100B was awesome with Wood. 100A with Acland, not so much.
SUCH A BAD TEACHER!! His lectures are terrible, you don't learn a single thing, and the book is chose is just as bad, and then he expects us to do problems that have obviously proven too difficult for the class. And his daily quizzes are just ridiculous... I just have one question, HOW DID THIS MAN BECOME A PROFESSOR!?!
I only gave him 2's on the ease, helpfulness, and clarity, becuz after reading the other posts, i feel a LITTLE bit sorry for him, (A lot of ppl rated him on 10/5, i wonder why?). Everything that everyone has said so far is absolutely true, he is horrid, TAKE ANY MEASURES NECESSARY TO AVOID A CLASS WITH THIS MAN AS THE "PROFESSOR"
Wow...just wow...Microeconomics has long been my favorite subject to study. Acland has destroyed my love for it. This class cuts your self-esteem down to a tenth of what it originally was. This class is honestly, so far, the biggest academic regret of my life. I can't even open the book anymore without getting upset.
A really pleasant man and brilliant Economist. However, he makes the class unreasonably hard to the point that the good students are pulling their hair out due to stress. I'd rather gauge my eyes out with a spoon than work on the problem sets. While the lectures, discussions, and readings are solid by themselves, together they form a mess.
I know he has a PhD in Economics and all, but I really think he should go back to school and get some sort of degree in Education. Horrible teacher, book, lectures, assignments. An abomination to the Economics Dept. of UC Berkeley. AVOID AVOID AVOID...learn from my mistake
Worst teacher ever, I hate the damn book the professor quiz you like you know the**** before he lectures on it. Lectures are just horrible, the biggest regret in my academic life in Berkeley. FML FML FML!!!!!
I agree with the person below, why the heck do we get quizzes on things BEFORE he lectures about them!?! If ever there was a definition for the worst professor of all time, Dan Acland would be it
I think the other ppl have said enough for me to just say: heed our warnings!
One of my worst classes ever. He's not a bad guy, hes just a bad professor. Take a warning from the other comments.
mid term is around the corner, yet have no friggin idea how to study for it. the most amazing part is that Problem Set, Text and Lecture are perfectly uncorrelated....fml
i really wonder why i am an econ major!!! fml!!!!! farming school here i come!!!!
i dont see what his fb page has to do with hi teaching, but yeah the dude is pretty crap stain teacher, i havent learned a single thing yet from him or the crappy text book, which sucks b/c his prob sets are very difficult and time consuming. The only hope for a student in his class is the curve.
...yeah...he's really THAT bad...
I dont understand what this man's deal is, he needs to chill out a bit more. As person Im sure he's a decent guy, but he really has no place teaching, as stated by someone else earlier, such a large and important class. I really do hope he reads these comments, itll open his eyes as to how his students feel, and maybe it will instigate change.
Acland is horrible!!!! It is really sad that Berkeley don't have much fund to bring competent professor to the campus, especially for the important core class like econ100a.
He is a nice guy but not can be qualified as a professor at all.He makes my life so tough and too stressful. If you want to challenge with the most scared things in the world..then read the book and do the PS he assigned..lectures are useless..quiz is ridiculous..no connection at all...why we have this kind of prof for the core class?
It's really sad, but all of the comments on here are entirely accurate. I've never been so stressed in my life about one class. Problem sets are ridiculously hard. Quizzes are unreasonable and stressful. I was so stoked at being an econ major. This class is seriously making me have second thoughts.
so micro econ agrues that people always make the best choice as rational behavior, but apparently taking his micro class COMPLETELY violates this fundamental micro assumption, as it's the worst decision I've ever made...
The problem with this man is that he is so smart. But he is not smart enough to realize that his fellow students are not as smart as him.
Dan if you read this we all think your a great guy! Please please just try to correlate better, we are all here to learn from you!
Everyone else pretty much describes this class accurately. His teaching is horrible and the textbook is horrible. Lectures are useless because he can't explain anything
Dan is smart, but at the same time he has been studying Econ for his whole life while we have been studying it for 2 years. Despite the difference, he treats us as his equal instead of passing along his knowledge as a professor should. The class would be much better if he didn't assign the hardest problems in the book and lectures made SOME sense.
I assume the one who rates Dan 4/5 is Dan HIMSELF.....
Dan is extremely bright, which is probably why as a first time lecturer, he doesn't understand how to teach students who are not as learned in economics as him. He would be a great teacher for a graduate micro class, but his expectations are too high for Econ100a. Everyone in the class feels this way. It is just too hard.
I agree with the other posts. Dan is an extremely intelligent person and he's a nice guy, but he really should not be teaching 100A. He expects FAR TOO MUCH from his students. His insight his nice at times, but this is easily the most stressful classes I have ever taken.
ughh...i really don't think he should fail anyone, I mean this is the hardest class Ive ever taken, and Im assuming many other students feel that way, from the looks of this page. The only people who should fail are the ones you get like under 30 or 40%
I agree with the person below, the only ones Dan should fail are the ones who obviously aren't trying (those who get under 40% raw) I think I have a B in the class but I put so much time in this class that i may fail my other classes. The class should be designed so that people in the 60%'s and maybe even 50%'s end up getting by with atleast a C-
eh...still finding his way a professor, but he is NOWHERE NEAR it yet. Very hard,b/c he expects too much from students taking an undergraduate intermediate microecon course. I think he would do much better as a graduate level professor; he seems very intelligent. This class will be the demise of my 4.0 GPA ><
I really dislike being a guinea pig for his teaching career. This is a CORE class that I MUST PASS, and it would be a lot more feasible with a teacher who knew what he/she was doing. I have nothing against the man, he's just not cut out for a class like this, they should've had him teach one of the elective courses...so unfair to the students
After having a professor like Acland, I now know that it can't get any worse. Sure he is a smart guy, but his class structure is an absolute mess. Book is decent (minus the occasional errors). Lectures are not based on the book and sometimes very hard to understand, and Acland often makes huge mistakes. He shouldn't teach 100a again.
Horrible. Least helpful, least interesting, least engaging, and most hated class ever. I dread reading the book. I dread going to lecture. And I hate that I have to go to office hours just so I can complete the problem sets - they are impossible without help from the professor! It's ridiculous. Acland is a nice enough guy in office hours, though.
Easily, easily, easily THE MOST STRESSFUL class I have ever taken. This guy is a terrible teacher. Book and lectures don't even go together, and it's like he has the incessant need to make life difficult for his students. HARD CLASS. DONT TAKE!!
...uh....yeah...
Dan infuses the lecture with his opinion too much so we get a biased view of Econ (he bashed Macro for 5 minutes before). He also puts the same amount of focus on unimportant topics that he likes compared to important topics like consumer or producer theory. This class is just sucks and I would never have taken him if I know her was this bad.
This is the hardest class I have taken at Cal so far, and it's not because of the material. This is Dan's first year teaching and it shows. First day of class, he gave a speech saying how he doesn't not want to be the cause of a student's stress leading to a suicide. Well guess what, everyone is stressed and almost @ the point. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS
The book he chose is awful and is riddled with typos, inconsistencies, and useless banter that makes it frustrating to read. His lectures have nothing to do with the reading or problem sets. He throws tantrums and goes on digressive tirades in front of the class. However, I do feel he is trying his best and hope future classes have it better.
Horrible professor teaching a class that should be relatively easy to teach. Chose to use a book because he personally knows the author and didn't consider how the material is presented (horribly). As many people have said already, the quizzes are bad and the homework does NOTHING to reinforce learning. I'm relying on what I learned in AP to pass.
A terribly unclear book with a teacher who doesnt explain anything from the book.
fresh out of grad school, he already has a beard and acts like he is the department chair. one of the worst, yet pretentious professor I have ever had. He cant teach, spends most of class going on rants about his opinions and making pretentious speeches. Disgrace to the department. Grading is inefficient and takes forever. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
He's a nice guy, personality wise. Horrible teaching methods though. Tried to force participation in a huge class. Quizzes at the start of class, without explaining the material.Impossibly hard midterms and problem sets. Confusing tangent lectures that sometimes have nothing to do with the readings. This is one of the worst classes I've taken.
Maybe my opinion won't be new among all these reviews, but I simply hate this class! It takes my whole time! I might even fail my other classes cause I have to spend way too much time trying to comprehend this stupid book! Neither lectures that only confuse u, nor the text help you with problem sets. and if u forget iclicker, u can't take the quiz!
Dan is a very nice and quirky (in a good way) professor that would not be that bad, if it wasn't for the fact that the textbook he uses is AWFUL. I don't think he is soo bad at teaching, cept he makes too many typos and mistakes. I love the stress his course puts on public policy, too. But, yeah, the textbook... painful.
I really have no idea what everyone else is talking about. Dan is one of the most helpful teachers I have had, especially if you go to his OH. If you think that this class is so hard, then the other classes you have taken must have been a joke. Try taking an engineering/science class, and then you can complain; those are difficult classes, not this
The professor is actually trying to show off his knowledge of this field instead of letting student achieve something from the course. His lecture jumps way too quickly, students like me just can't process fast enough to absorb what he says.
Professor is actually pretty helpful, material is just hard. Class is mostly reading quiz/problem set based, so if you go to his OH, GSI's OH, and do the reading each night, it's not bad.
He is extremely Helpful, But material is hard and he is not good at lecturing. However, I think he improves a lot throughout the semester
OK lecturer on his BEST days. Problem sets are pretty ridiculous. Idk, I just feel like he takes things that shouldn't be too difficult and makes them very hard. He also makes mistakes every lecture which really throws students off, and he "corrects" his mistakes with emails later during the day/week. I do NOT recommend taking him.
Legitimately the worst academic experience of my life. Dan Acland is not qualified to be teaching elementary school algebra, much less college level micro Economics. Acland threw out a tried and true textbook only to replace it with the single worst book of any kind ever written. Worst. Class. Ever.
terrible textbook. the material is hard enough as it is and the textbook just makes everything 20 times more confusing than it needs to be. a lot of people complained that the midterm was hard, and the curve was low, but i thought it was a fair test. dan is a new teacher and it shows but he is getting better.
Wow these comments are overly harsh. I am going to give the unvarnished perspective of dan's teaching. He is a good lecturer. The structure and method of advancing his lecture is bad. furthermore the alignment of his lectures with the material in the book is bad. this being said he tries very hard and should be a great teacher in5 orso years.
He TRIES to be a good lecturer, but FAILS. Lecture is him drawing random graphs and equations of 5+ variables (completely useless for understanding). Problem sets are long and nearly impossible. The book he choose is as confusing as he is. Exams are WAY too long and overestimate the student. Required quiz every lecture. AVOID AT ALL COST!
Quizzes: If your iClicker blinks green but the system doesn't register, there's nothing you can do. Prob Sets: Very long and comprehensive; there is a very fine line between plagiarism and collaboration. Exams/Lectures/Textbook: Poorly structured/written lectures/textbook and do not correspond w/ exams. [[[I no longer want to major in Economics.]]]
The book is hard to understand. The lecture is impossible to understand. The GSIs (PhD candidates) have trouble solving the problem sets. The final is cumulative. He will not give any sort of outline. The book has 1200 pages. The class is overtly math intensive. Concepts are not explained properly.
I feel bad for how terrible these ratings are, because Acland is a very nice guy. However, yea its no joke this is by far the hardest class ive taken at Cal. His lectures are completely unhelpful, and they barely correlate with the book.. Oh well the class is over now. So much for getting into the econ major..-__-
Ok so yeaaaaaaaaa this professor is definitely not good and this class is extremely hard in my opinion because he is an inexperience professor. The book goes on tangents and is just annoying, the lectures are pointless and he does not explain the material at all. Problem sets are hard and take long to do. Worst professor and class I've taken.
His exam and problem sets are extremely difficult and problem sets are so challenging even though they are not helpful to study for exam. He is the worst test maker on the earth! so unexperienced! His final is very difficult also. I will never ever!!! take any class with this professor.
first econ class in first semester at Cal. The difficulty of this class meets my expectation from berkeley. Yes, the class was pretty challenging but it wasn't impossible. Dan is too nice to be criticized like this. If you went to every class, listened carefully and read the text book well enough, you would not have struggled in the class.
Ridiculous Final Exam!!!I even don't know what he is looking for from his students!!! ridiculous!!!
A few things to keep in mind: I believe this semester was his first time being a professor, so he needs more trial and error to perfect his teaching strategies. To succeed in this class: read the assigned readings every week so you can ace the bi-weekly quizzes, get a good GSI, and go to office hours if you actually want to understand the material
He was bad at first but got so much better as the course went on, which indicates he'll be good in future classes. It was his first time teaching but by the end he was lecturing very well. Final was easy so I wouldn't worry about taking him in the future, so don't pay attention to all the negative reviews which were from the beginning of the course
The Final was Ok, but he rather test u on algebra than on Econ.
Like the others said, his teaching improved throughout the semester. i absolutely hate his choice of textbook though. it's dull and unnecessarily wordy. The final was fairly easy but it didn't test us on too many econ concepts that are important
Prof. Acland seems like a brilliant guy and an incredibly nice person. Will he go on to be a great economist and a brilliant professor? Sure. Should you take a class with him in the near future? Absolutely not.
I honestly feel that he has the potential to be a good instructor. As far as his first time teaching. Terrible. As is expected. If you take classes with him understand that he is inexperienced. As far as giving him a good review this semester though. Not happening.
by far the worst class and professor I've taken at Cal
I hated this class while I took it, but in retrospect it was my fault it was so hard, I didn't study at all. Tests are fair as are the daily lecture quizzes. Problem sets are very difficult. The book was a HORRIBLE choice hopefully he changes that. Not a good lecturer (1st time), but he will be in like 4-5 years. If you try it won't be bad at all.
This was the single worst class I've taken at Cal, and possibly in my entire schooling as a matter of fact. I had to end up teaching myself everything from the textbook because the lectures were absolutely useless and the professor was not at all clear about any of the concepts, and it seemed he himself struggled with the math during lecture.
What everyone else said is pretty accurate. Don't do it.
I can tell he has a good potential to be a great lecturer. But he is not now. His lecture, this semester, just made students get more confused. The textbook is horrible. Any professor at berkeley should not choose this book.
He wasn't the worst professor I have ever had, but was far from the best. Its his first semester so I see where he can improve and I really think he will. Also, I don't think this is the class he should be teaching.
His problem sets are challenging but do-able. The reading quizzes were quite irksome but not too difficult if you did the reading. The tests were the hardest part but they're curved. Overall, he's a nice guy with high expectations for his class. It's harder than you'd expect for Econ 100A, but he's a fair grader who cares about his students.
I think people are pretty harsh on him especially this is his first semester. He should have stuck to the original textbook because with the new textbook he assigned there was a lot of unnecessary confusion. He tried to make the grades fair with the class quizzes, problem sets and exams. I think it was more difficult than it should have been.
Honestly, the class is hard. But Dan is helpful and care about his students. Some of my friends get A.
Acland hasa person is a nice guy, but as a professor he just sucked. The book, his lectures, quiz's, and problem sets didn't go correlate with each other. You had to pretty much teach your self the material.
I have to say that Dan not a easy-follow professor; however, he did improve a lot at the end of the semester, and he did care about his students!
Though professor Acland is a nice person and attempts to be helpful, the textbook used is not clear at all, there are quizzes given daily that test beyond what has been covered in class, he is almost impossible to follow in lecture, and his descriptions of what is to be expected on exams are misleading. Avoid him at all costs.
Dan made numerous mistakes in lecture, but he steadily improved throughout the semester. He was an engaging lecturer, as well as a thoughtful and kind man. The final and some of the problem sets were difficult. In my opinion, he was not nearly as bad as all the previous comments suggest.
Dan really cares about his students. He improved noticeably throughout the semester. The problem sets were difficult but if you attended GSI and professor office hours they helped. Midterm and final were fair and the quizzes each lecture were not too hard if you did the reading. Stressful class but Dan was very welcoming of questions and concerns.
Dan is a good guy. A brilliant man. He really improved throughout the semester. Overall, it was pretty stressful and very difficult at times, but my efforts led me to a good result. If he were to bring the difficulty and courseload down a notch, this would be one of the best classes at Cal. It was a good experience. "Men can wear pink."
worst professor EVER
Too many people rated Dan too early in the semester. It was a little disorganized in the beginning of the semester, but he improved drastically throughout. He was extremely helpful and if you're willing to put in the work, you can definitely get an A and learn a lot in the process.
He's pretty bad as a professor. Pulls random equations out of nowhere and makes little or no attempt to explain it. However, good curve at the end which might explain all the "good" comments later on. But as a professor who ought to teach the material, don't take him (unless you plan to fail 140 later by not knowing your microeconomics)
He did get better over the semester. BUT, he's still really really bad compared to all the other econ professors. People say: Oh yeah! He was good because he started as really really really bad and by the end he was really really bad. So, that's good then? Right?
Don't take his class if you plan on learning any economics.
I thought I was going to be an Econ major. Apparently not after taking Dan's class. Calculus 2 is not a prerequisite, yet you will do this on day 1. Better brush up on those math skills. No, better be an EXPERT in math AND econ.
I'm almost certain any positive comments here were written by Dan himself.
Not a good professor at all. Psychology and economics is fairly new and there are no textbooks. Readings he assign are extremely difficult to understand. Not much calculus but will need to understand very new math concepts and apply them in problem sets and exams. His lectures are misleading because the exams are far more difficult than lecture
SO bad.
He is genuinely interested and himself a thoughtful economist. However, his teaching still needs to mature. His exam questions are somewhat more realistic than those of other professors, but it's because Dan believes in borrowing mathematics' logic to make solid economics. I've taken 100A with Dan and got an A-, and he's drastically improving.
Acland is a knowledgeable and energetic professor, but his lectures are too basic and simplified, making his problem sets and exams much more difficult. Also, he will not accept any work if you're literally 2 seconds late.
He somehow manages to make an interesting subject like psychology & econ unbearable. Avoid him at all cost! I ignored the bad ratings from Econ 100A thinking he'd be different with another subject. NOPE! Take him at your own risk! Exams were hard, problems set didn't help much and lectures don't help you that much. =/
This teacher is insanely hard for the average students because he makes simple concepts extremely complicated. Lectures are simple, but useless for doing homework.
Nice professor who truly wants you to learn and understand the material. However, tends to expect students to be at his level of understanding the content. Math heavy with concepts that are difficult to grasp!
Professor Acland was very helpful in teaching the course in psychology and economics. Problem sets were reasonable in length and exams were consistent with the practice exams and review sessions. Visiting his office hours, he was helpful in answering my questions, even the ones irrelevant to the coursework.
great instructor, kind man, difficult problem sets/midterms, INSANE final.
He has improved a lot. iClicker questions are there to check for attendance. Problem Sets are graded on effort. Mid terms are a lot easier than problem sets. If you put in the time (5-6 hours) and learn the problem sets on your own, then you will do well in the class. He structures the problem sets so that you learn how to think like an economist.
Got above 1sd for two midterms. prolly A~A+. expected similar level at final. and boom! i failed the final and got B. that was super surprising
The most confusing and frustrating class I've ever taken. Avoid this prof at all costs.
Lectures are clear and easy to understand, problem sets and office hours are extremely helpful in guiding me though the process of modeling bounded rationality.
Super dedicated to students, class well organized. I would highly recommend Dan as a professor!
Clear, helpful, and engaging, even at 8 in the morning. Dense material made clear. Willing to take questions, and constantly monitors class to measure understanding and solicits questions when he can tell we're not getting it. Glad I had him as a teacher.
He is super helpful and dedicated! Highly recommend him as a prof.
Really fun professor. Clear and interesting lectures. Problem sets and exams are reasonable (easy to me). Our GSI (Gavin) is also very helpful/ knows the material well. Enjoyed this class and highly recommend Prof. Acland!
Such a passionate professor, taught me a lot; econ 119 is an enlightening course.
Kind and helpful professor; would try to respond to as many questions as possible during class time. Materials could be hard to grasp at first but he uploads podcast for revisions. Reasonable workload but required time in thinking through. Fair and doable midterms. Covers interesting topics and anomalies in standard economics.
Highly underrated professor (his score for 100A does not reflect his ability in 119). Lecture organization is a bit different from usual econ classes but he gets his message across. Problem sets are rather short but very useful in understanding materials. Exams are doable though there is time crunch during midterms. Would definitely take it again!
Dan Acland is a great professor and incredibly underrated here. He hands out lecture notes, assigned reading is pretty much optional, and the class is interesting. Content is very intuitive (hence the psych component) but also mathematical, and feels very different from most other econ classes (in a refreshing way). iclickers so go to class.
Great and inspirational!!!
Pros: He's very smart. Cons: He has a ways to go and a lot to learn about actually teaching students rather than just lecturing to them.
This guy is the absolute worst professor I have ever encountered. His lecture material has nothing to do with the exam or problem sets. The GSI's practically teach this class and the 2 hours spent in discussion are nowhere near enough to help with the class. Textbook gives no in depth solutions. Horrible professor overall.
Dont do it. Try to take Macro 100b if he is teaching 100a. Test has nothing to do with what you put in hours studying. Practice exams help w maybe one problem on the exam, the rest is obscure facts and stuff you wouldn't even consider important from what you've learned. Questions are true/false about something briefly mentioned in a rushed lecture.
like no
Worst. Professor. Ever. The actual worst professor I have ever had in my life. Just. Dont. Do. It.
Makes lectures seem like the class is a joke, you look at the problems sets and you are like what?? On top of that if you don't get a good gsi, you are absolutely done for. He is a very nice person though and seems like he cares but I feel like I havent learnt anything besides what I taught myself from the book.
Worst professor I've ever encountered both here at Berkeley and throughout my entire life as a student. He gives you unnecessary stress for a class that I basically taught myself and confuses you even more by providing you with slides with typos, unexplained reasoning, wrong explanation, etc. JUST NO. NEVER. I would put a negative score if I could
He is the worse professor/ teacher in my life. Dont take his class if you want to major in Econ!
Professor Acland is one of the most confusing and unorganized professors I have ever had - lectures are super hard to follow and he is very unsure on topics past the first couple of lectures (frequently makes mistakes, says 'sorry, um, see me after class'. He teaches micro in a very unintuitive way. Also psets have nothing to do with lecture.
Possibly the worst professor I ever had. Too theoretical and minimal application. Tries too hard to be funny, but is not. His PSETs are ridiculously tough and notoriously irrelevant and exams are on some other tangent itself.
Just an awful experience.
He doesnt even teach you anything. You can go to every lecture but you will not learn a single thing that will help you for the exam. He doesnt go over any examples. Dan if you ever read these, people clearly dislike the way you teach. You need to go over examples, not ramble on about theoretical drivel that has nothing to do with what is tested.
He's top notch and deserves better. Every class he prints a stack of notes for us and covers them in lecture. The problem is the class is typically focused on using formulas properly, and he works hard to make it more than that. That would work out fine, but his homework is harsh and takes time. He'd get less critics if he guided us more with math.
Pros:- Seems like a nice guy with a great sense of humor -Cares a great deal about the students -Man definitely knows what he's talking about Cons: -Lecture notes are informative, but notes usually do not cover stuff that is on the problem sets - Not enough mathematical examples provided in handouts -GSIs are inconsistent with offering help
awful experience
One of my favorite professors. His lectures are clear and organized, he's always prepared and gives us lecture notes to follow along. You can tell he's passionate about the subject. Does his best at teaching a hard subject to grasp. Hw is really tough but he's willing to guide you. Once you can do the hw, the topics make much more sense so it helps
Prof. Acland is such a nice guy that cares about students, although he is not good at teaching, I still like his class.
Previously I rated Prof Acland badly, but he gets better through the semester. He just wants you to actually LEARN, critically think and apply what you've learnt in different situations and truly understand the material. This is a difficult class in general with a lot of content, but something you have to take as an econ major, just takes effort.
Acland is extremely well organized and prints out the lecture notes/slides for you! Lectures can be very dry and the textbook was not very helpful and did not get much use., but overall Acland teaches the material well
Very hard class, not too good of a professor. I can tell he is really smart, but what we go over in lecture, especially in the beginning of the course is not very applicable to the problem sets. As the class goes on you will become more accustomed to how to approach problems. Go to GSI office hours, they were a huge help.
Really hard class. Lectures are sometimes helpful but often confusing when looking at the problem sets (PS). PS are incredibly hard, going to GSI is a must. However, exams are easier than ps and the solutions to the ps were crucial to helping prepare for midterms/finals. Really study those and the past exams. Genuine guy that cares about students.
Professor Acland is a very caring person who wants you to succeed. Problem sets are very hard but go to your GSIs because they are very helpful! Exams are also very tough but if you prepare very well you will be fine. He teaches you all the concepts in detail so you will be prepared for your electives! He is also very accessible outside class.
Seems to care about the students, is a genuine person. However, was constantly confused by his own notes, and explained things in a roundabout, confusing manner. Lectures alternated b/w funny anecdotes & awkward pauses as he tried to understand what he put on the slides. Uses iclicker. Curve made it easy to pass! Study hard on your own!
Took this class as my first class at Cal as a transfer student, hardest class Ive ever taken. Lecture is nothing like the problem set or midterms which are very difficult. Also uses his own grading scheme which he doesnt share. He does curve midterms n final a lot which is good.
Acland gets a bad reputation, but it's just because the class is hard. He comes prepared with printed lecture notes for everyone and the exams are not harder than the problem sets so if you put in the work you'll do fine. He is also a nice person with a good sense of humor.
I'm surprised to see a 2.0 tbh. I think he's fairly good except that his exams are REALLY REALLY hard (but he has curves. i got 46/75 in my mt2 but it was still an A-level grade). Lectures are mandatory. He explains things clearly. Prof Acland is definitely worth more than 2.0
I think Acland is a great professor, and it is clear that he cares a lot about his students. His problem sets can be difficult and time-consuming, and his exams are challenging as well. However, he is very accessible outside of class, as he holds group and one-on-one office hours. Despite the negative reviews, I would definitely take Acland again!
I think his ratings are very skewed on here with people who probably didn't do well in the class (no offense) because he is fabulous. The material he wants you to know is clear with his lecture packets and study guides. The class is a lot of work but also very rewarding. I really enjoyed this class.
I am sure some comments he posted by himself. Dear Dan Acland, I am very surprised that you said you are good a teaching in the last lecture. But in reality, students don't find that true at all.
I looked at the recent comments. Surprisingly, they are pretty similar to each other. Wondering if he posted by himself. Dan Acland is not a good lecturer (very confusing). Yes hes accessible outside (still confuses you). Yes everything is on the study guide (literally everything). Yes exams are different then hw (very Different).
such an awful experience. always confused about his own lecture notes and always awkwardly pauses during lectures, which wasted a lot of time. iclicker required. exams are extremely difficult but he curves a lot. dude, study by yourselves cuz he is not that good at teaching stuffs.
Prof. Acland's tests are really hard, but he literally gives you what you need to know with his lecture handouts, study guides and practice tests. Furthermore his grading policy makes it so that doing bad on one test won't tank your grade. Don't think he is bad at all ... only problem I had is grading is very slow (final grades came a week late)
Heavy Test Grader
ECON 100A itself is not an easy topic for any professor to make the class very interesting and fun. However, professor Acland does a very good job in my opinion. Although problem sets and exams were challenging, his lecture notes include all the intuition and formulas you need to solve them. I don't think the rate here is really fair :(
Acland's lectures were a little disorganized and his problem sets/exams were quite challenging. Despite that, I really liked professor Acland, and I thought he did a really good job at teaching 100A. He definitely makes you work for a good grade in his class, but I really enjoyed his class, and I plan on taking Econ 119 with him in the Fall!
Acland is definitely not an "easy A" professor, but he does give you all of the resources to get an A. He was straight forward with what he expected from us on the tests and even gave a study guide. I don't think a lot of people used that. I filled it out and the test was very similar. Nothing was a curveball. I love Acland. Straightforward guy.
Acland is such a nice guy. Detailed lecture notes really help, especially if his teaching style doesn't work for you, and both the tests and the curve are reasonable. You can tell he has genuine interest in the intersection of psych and econ and tries to present the material in an intuitive manner
I really enjoyed this class. The exams, lectures, and problem sets all tie really well together, so the content is well organized and easy to follow along. Psets and exams are very fair. Super interesting class and would recommend
I really loved 119 and Professor Acland made lectures relevant and interesting. He is clearly passionate about the class and keeps it lively. Id also recommend his office hours, always good discussion and Acland was cool to talk to. Test are also straight-forward and easy to do well if you study. Overall an awesome class!
I loved this class. Professor Acland made the lectures very engaging, with a lot of anecdotes and real-life examples, and he strongly encourages participation. Acland is also super accessible outside of class, and seems genuinely interested in getting to know his students and helping them to succeed. Highly recommend!
Sometimes I feel like he does not know what he is talking about in lectures, and then students always get confused by his overcomplicated lecture (ex: on explaining a simple concept such as WTP). Not recommend taking this class. Wasted my time to learn something more meaningful.
I took Benefit-Cost Analysis - hard class but totally worth it.
Professor Acland's lectures are so interesting. Economics is actually really exciting and fun to learn in his class. He gives maybe 6 problem sets which I really enjoyed doing because through them I learned so much. The problem sets and lectures are all related to everything you will see in his exams which I so appreciated about this class.
Prof made lectures fairly interesting to listen to. Grade criteria and class format is very clear and straightforward. Some readings and quizzes on the readings, almost all material is from lectures which he gives paper copies of all the slides. Mandatory attendance with clickers, pass/fail format for assignments/tests.
one of the worst professors i have had at berk - he is so disorganized with content and then gets frustrated when you ask him simple questions. incredibly rude and demeaning, esp in OH/emails. his grading is incredibly unclear and confusing, the class is so much work and esp being taught by such a bad teacher worsens it. epitome of yt male
Prof Acland is very knowledgeable and his lectures interesting, however homework is extremely long and difficult and barely reflects what's discussed in lecture. You're expected to solve problems without any examples and overall I think his teaching methods are outdated. No electronics allowed, mandatory attendance, does not reward effort, etc.
This is the worst teacher I've ever had in an economics major at Berkeley. His policies are extremely strict, and the rigor this semester is completely different from the rigor of last semester. There is no clear standard for grading, and the right of interpretation belongs to the teacher. Class content is also a bit confusing.
The content taught by Daniel Acland was very difficult for the students, and many of the obstacles were artificially and intentionally set up, and the professor found ways to make it difficult for the students to get through. And the content of this class is confusing and it is hard for students to find a proper path to learn. Don't take
Acland made attendance mandatory even if you had COVID and during the GSI strike. Problem set material does not appear on exams, struggles to stay on topic during lectures, and exams are designed poorly. Final was 20 question worth 100 pts MC. No transparency about grading bins distributions. Unforgiving curve despite the strike.
absolutely bad, everythibg is hard, and he intentionally wants students to suffer
Professor Acland is special in how disorganized and uninspiring he is. After final grades were posted, I still had two very important assignments ungraded but who cares, right, the grades are out? The whole semester he was feeding us excuses why he was so uprepared for the course blaming ChatGPT, etc, but I would say he's just a lousy teacher.
The unfortunate thing about Dan is that he assumes of his students an inherent malintent. In his mind, students aim to ease through the class without care or effort. And this is evidenced by the punitive language and practices he maintains. What is sad is that many instructors with a precarious or unemployed job status would be better suited.
Professor Acland's lectures are engaging, with real-world examples that make the concepts interesting. The problem sets are challenging but rewarding, and Unstuck ai was a great study aid. Overall, a worthwhile and well-structured class.
Thoughtful professor, engaging and caring about his students. Gets a bad rep, but truly tries to push for understanding as much as possible. Lectures can be fun, and guest lecturers were great – could only recommend to my peers
Amazing professor. Lectures are clear, interactive and allow students to participate quite a lot. The content is really fascinating and thoroughly presented with good examples and case studies. Great class for anyone interested in public policy, psychology or econ. The teacher is really caring and nice.
mandatory attendance with clickers, but is very attentive to his students. I think his rigour and straightforwardness might surprise more than one, but the course isn't inherently hard. expectations were set early on, one just has to follow through
Professor Acland is a unique professor. The persona might surprise you at first, but you'll end up really liking his humour and insights. Would recommend to anyone.
Engaging most of the time and can be funny but really struggles with being on top of things. Did not show up to our first day of class and then made us take our final exam outdoors on the last day. Good lecturer but all over the place and super forgetful, + at least one mishap per class is a little crazy
Daniel is a hot mess... He's incredibly unclear about expectations for assignments and projects. He's all over the place and is constantly asking students to send him email reminders for things he should keep track of himself. He's not funny, and if he loves Stanford so much, he should just go teach there...
great guy, just a bit scatterbrained, but he does care about his students. short quizzes every few weeks, but no midterm and just three short projects, which is nice. concepts are really interesting if you're into behavioral econ or psych. definitely recommend this class as an elective for econ majors if you want a break from math-heavy classes lol
