He's a great professor. He will always let you know when he's available to help you with homework (there's a lot of it) which is typically on blackboard. He makes you work hard and everyday he's always extremely over excited about math. He comes in everyday with a "pump you up" message like your overbearing father or inspirational preacher would do
I am not a mathematician so the only reason I took this class was to get credit. Mr. A has good intentions, but I struggled so hard to understand him. We would never get full explanations and he bounced around so much that it made it impossible to concentrate. If you struggle in math already I would without a doubt take someone else.
Great Professor
He has 2 parts to his test no multiple choice so be prepared.
Mr. A really cares for his students and will go out of his way to help a student on his own time. Despite this, I found him very difficult to understand. HW nearly every night (which isn't bad). Tests are very stressfull due to the amount of problems vs the time given to do them. An extra 20 mins on every test would would have changed my grade.
this was a very hard class and if you don't study or show up you will not pass
Expect to waste the first ten minutes on a life lecture with a religious under tone. He enjoys making things a lot more difficult then they need to be.
Mr. A was a great professor! I had him over the summer during CatamountGAP, and even with the short time span he taught us what we needed. He cares about his students, more so than other professors. Definitely would recommend him! Everyone talks about his religious views, but he doesn't shove them down your throat; only mentions them while talking.
Good guy, terrible math teacher, he rambles a lot and drowns you in homework and pop quizzes. He knows his stuff but has a hard time explaining it to those who just don't get it. If you struggle with math don't take his class.
Mr. A is a good teacher, he thouroghly explains the material and quite well. But beyond that expect to study, alot, his tests take longer to complete than the time given and there will be some questions that dont make much sense. When you study for a work out every problem in that section of your notebook then do it again, then do that again.
If you are not good at math already I wouldn't recommend him. Can be very unreasonable and not understanding. Do not take this course if you have to miss some of his classes.
Will not work with you if needed. Inappropriate and unnecessaryily harsh response when you request for needed flexibility. Is not understanding.
Mr. Dan Atterholt is a very kind man but that does not make him a great teacher. He assigns homework every single day, which he does not go over in class. The overall grade is extremely weighed on if you perform well on the tests. His rubric is designed as if the students are all mathematics majors.
He is a very passionate teacher, which I like. However, I don't think I would be passing his Precalculus class if I had not had the class in high school. There are few questions on his tests that if you make a couple of little mistakes you make a B on the test. So many people dropped out of my class because of his teaching.
Don't take this class expecting to make an A but if you work hard in this class you will come out of it smarter than you were when you started. He's a harsh grader and his tests are things of nightmares. Almost nightly homework but it's normally quick and easy.
This class really should not have been this hard, I have never even made a B in a math class. Mr. A's test are killer and you would be lucky to finish one in the time given. If you are great at math go for it but if not I would stay away.
hes terrible. everyday he told the whole class that"if you dont understand this concept, you should withdrawl from my class"
Very tough teacher , makes class harder than it needs to be. If you dont understand topics he suggests you drop the course.
Mr. A is a really good professor. Many people have given him bad rating just because they werent willing to put in the time and effort needed to pass the class even though he made it very clear at the beginning of the semester that it will be a tough class. He makes time outside of class to help and is willing to answer any questions you may have.
Nothing but lectures. LEARN YOUR NOTES!! One minute he is loud the next he whispers is sometimes hard to follow. Take his class be prepared to put in lots of work.
Calls our class stupid for not understand a concept that he didnt teach. Says we shouldve learned it already. Lectures everyday and moves very quickly.
He is uptight and picky, but he knows his stuff.
Even if you are strong in math like me, this class still isn't easy. Dan is a good guy at heart but that doesn't make him a good professor. Moves very fast and often insult us by saying we should already know this material. Homework every single night! And his tests are ridiculous! If you have the option to choose a different prof then do it!!
Unbelievable hard, never had tests as hard as his before and halfway through the semester told our class that some of need to withdraw.
He's a cool dude, but his class is just ridiculously hard. His tests are stressful, homework every night, attendance policy is kind of strict, lectures are good though. If other professor's classes are available then take those guys and not Mr. A, because you can get the same material with a better grade and not be behind in the next class.
If you take good notes in class you will pass easily. Hes very clear about what hes looking for on tests. That being said, if you try and study any other way, his class is really hard. Tests are filled with examples from lecture, sometimes copy and paste.
I had Atterholt for 130, and he wasn't that bad- easy class. I got to 146 & was like what have you done with Dan. He assigns hw nearly every night, which I knew, but the hw he assigns has almost no correlation with the tests. He claims that all test questions come from notes, but as many questions as he gives, the time you have doesn't work. RIP
This was honestly one of the worst math experiences I have ever had in my life. His expectations for students is through the roof and his lectures are confusing. Please heed my warning if your in there LEAVE WHILE YOU STILL CAN the speech he does at the beginning of the semester is pure truth. He will make math unnecessarily hard for you. BE WARNED
Has a speech ha gives at the beginning of semester bragging about how this will be the hardest class we will ever take. It is true. Half of the class has withdrawn, and he expects students to know information that he never really goes over. Teachers shouldn't brag about hard classes with a 30% pass rate. DO NOT TAKE 146 WITH HIM
This without a doubt the worst professor on this campus. He preaches that this class will be the hardest class youve ever taken and hes correct. His backwards teaching methods and ridiculous tests make this class a waste of time. Even assigns homework that sometimes you havent even gone over yet and it can only be done once. DONT TAKE THIS GUY!!
This is by far the worst class with the worst professor I have ever taken in my life! I went to office hours for help once because I hadn't done well on a test and he just told me to study more rather than explaining why I missed the problem I had. He did not explain content in class, office hours, and spoke to you like you were stupid.
Omg !! Where do I start. For one, this is one of the hardest math classes I have ever taken. He gives off the impression that he likes having a class that has a reputation of being really hard (in which it is). He literally makes it hard for students to pass his class. keep up with the lecture because hes constantly moving to new concepts.
Brags about only teaching the top 1% of the class. Tries to make mathematicians out of students, not realizing some of us have different career paths and are just trying to pass with a decent grade. Is very condescending when his students are not passing. Will start class 5 minuets early and penalize anyone who comes in after he starts.
Just terrible! My gosh The way he belittles his students who do not understand what he is teaching. Just nasty attitude all around. If you struggle with math concepts DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE. He has no empathy for those struggling to learn, it will always be your fault.
This was one of the worst experience Ive ever had with any professor or teacher. I DO NOT recommend this teacher for any class at all! He teaches one thing & tests on another & also will give ridiculous pop quizzes that have to be done in ridiculous time constraints.
It's been one of my best experiences in a math class. On the first class day, Dr. A tells all of his students what's expected to pass the class. He explains things very well and many times. His class is not hard at all IF you study and prepare yourself. If you slack, you fail. If you prepare, you get an A. It's a fun class if your there to learn.
Treats all students like you are a mathematics major! If you are not an A student do NOT take with him! You will be sorry! I promise! He goes so fast that you cant write the problems! While he is lecturing while writing problems on board you cant hear him sometimes therefore, you are lost. Worst prof ever!
This man. Will not pass you even if you have a 59. You will def spend most of the semester focused on this class. So much stress and work for such a basic precalc class. You will though become a very strong math student after him. Before the final I studied for over eight hours and still didnt pass. Hardest class I have ever taken in my life.
the most confusing and hardest class i have ever taken. The professor teaches all his students as if they are mathematics graduate students. He doesn't teach in simple terms and expects all students to be extremely knowledgeable before enrolling in the course. This class is the definition of a nightmare for anyone who dares to enroll.
This was one of my first classes as a freshman and I instantly regretted it. One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Do not take unless you already know the material well.
Not the best professor, as a freshman I had to take a couple of his math courses. I would avoid taking his class. I wouldn't know where to begin when trying to describe him. I know he means well, but he just didn't inspire me as much as he could have.
As long as you pay attention, go to class, and do the work that he assigns, you will be fine and well-prepared for higher level math. Mr. A is a tough, but fair and caring person and really knows what He's talking about. Don't let all of the poor ratings discourage you from him just because he expects you to actually work for your grade.
Mr. A is a sweet and understanding person. He is very passionate about what he teaches and expects you to give your very best in the class. Video lectures are beneficial. Tests and homework are easy if you keep up with lectures, take detailed notes, do the assigned homework and practice problems, and attend class. If you study, you'll do fine.
Unempathetic, confusing, and overall just not a great teacher. While he is enthusiastic, and probably means well, Only 2 people per class will get an A or A-, and 1 person out of ALL of his classes will get an A+. His reasoning behind this is "nobody works hard enough" suggesting he is at no fault for his lack of teaching skills.
Mr. A shames those who do not understand the concepts immediately, if you dont do well, its because you "arent doing enough"
I don't even know where to start, simply one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Spent countless hours trying to learn concepts on my own because his teaching methods are way too confusing.
Seems like a nice guy and very enthusiastic but hes extremely unemphatic and his teaching methods are extremely difficult to understand and unfortunately he doesnt seem to understand that some people learn differently than others.
He is simply not a good teacher. If you ask him to explain how he got his answer he will just repeat the same words but louder. He refuses to acknowledge that he could be the reason no one is passing or understanding the material. You can study everyday for hours and if you dont test well he will say you havent worked hard enough.
Horrible experience in class
Brags about how hard his class is and gives only 2 A's
Said only 2 kids per class could get an A, and only one of those can be an A+. Claims its because people dont work hard enough but never gave us a chance to prove it.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Made me consider transferring schools.
His attendance policy is ridiculous and his teaching methods are less than effective so why should i come to class?
- He does throw material out fast and hard, but as long as you are willing to use resources (tutoring center) and ask questions, it gets easier. -Show up, every day. If you aren't a morning person, DON'T take his early classes. -He's incredibly passionate and gets excited about teaching. -Challenging but rewarding if you are determined to succeed
do not take any class with this man. he came into class one day after we had taken a test and gave us a ten minute speech on how we should be "ashamed of ourselves" because of our scores. he came into the final and said, "this will be the most difficult test you have taken in your lives." i strongly recommend you avoid this man at all cost.
I recommend to not take his class. If he does not like youhe will show it. He will call you out cause you cannot figure out a problem. He had handed my test back and proceeded to say You are stupid for this and then continued to give out rest of the test, patting other people on their backs. He flys through his material like there is no tomorrow.
Literally gives out only 2As per test I haven't seen more than 2, and he has stated to us over and over about how he's proud that his tests are so hard. Literally walked in to our final and said this is the hardest test you will ever take. I don't understand why you would be proud of so many students doing horribly.
In class if you didnt understand how to do a problem hed barely explain it but the next problem which is the same kind of problem that you just asked about and make you answer the next two. By doing this it made you not want to ask questions in class. This was my least favorite class.
very difficult class. if you are not already math savvy, don’t take this class. Mr A is enthusiastic but sometimes harsh. I have had a very hard time in his class because i am not naturally math oriented. his attendance policy is also very strict so if you are frequently late do not take his class, your grade will suffer.
Mr Atterholt was a good teacher. Despite what these reviews say, i took the class and he actually wanted us to learn the math that we were learning. Its hard to find a professor that will sit down with you and help you work on the work and try to understand it. He also give many different ways to solve a problem so you can choose what is the best.
I was scared to take him based on his reviews but he ended up being one of my favorites. He's definitely old school in his teaching and very passionate about math. He may be intimidating in class but outside of the classroom he is helpful and always down to answer questions. His tests are exactly like the notes and homework. Do the hw!!
Mr. A turned out to be a really good teacher. If you pay attention in his class and do the homework, you will be fine on the exams. Most of the exams are examples used in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he will help. I asked questions all the time and he was very helpful.
Overall I enjoyed Mr.A's class despite all the negative feedback if you pay attention to class and do the homework you will do just fine, he also uses a lot of the examples from homework or in class in the exams so thats not too bad and finally he is always willing to help out if you have any questions.
Mr.A seemed intimidating at first but after the first week you get used to his craziness. He actually cares for his students and wants us to learn the materials. ASK QUESTIONS! He honestly loves questions and will answer every detail he can. Do the HW and show up to class. I took his 130 and 146 classes because he is an amazing professor!
I think he was an amazing professor who genuinely cared about his students. The only thing I would complain about is that he sometimes would be very indecisive about when he would give homework. other than that I encourage you to take his class!
He is strict with his HW policy. No late work unless there is a very good reason. Be in class, come on. However, if you are not and have something from the Bird Building, or any other campus-excusable absence. It will be excused. He goes over a lot in class, but it is clear and you can ask as many questions as you want (in class). He actually cares
He is very all over the place and it is hard to follow him. When asked a question he repeats exactly what he said and doesn't explain any further. He is very encouraging and genuinely wants you to pass and you will if you show up and don't miss more than 3 unexcused and do the homework.
Mr A is a really good prof. If you go to class, do the homework, and participate in the support class you will do well! The workload is not a lot. He is also very kind and wants you to do well. Showing up and doing the work = drops lowest test grade.
I loved having Mr. A as a professor this year. He broke problems down so you truly understood. LOVES questions. Very sweet always thanking us for our time to be in class. Does call on you in class, but if you don't know just say that and he will move on. All his test are problems he does over and over again and always willing to explain again.
Mr. A had an interesting class. He was very involved with his students especially those who asked questions. The downside is he has a very old-school approach to teaching he did all his notes on the whiteboard, so if you didn't know anyone in class or are a slower note-taker good luck. Just put the work in and study/ask questions and you will pass.
Mr. A teaches by doing examples on the board, but he's a bit scatterbrained. He definitely does care about his students and is always willing to go back over problems and take questions. He gives a lot of homework, mainly from the textbook, for practice but he's always willing to take questions about the homework. Overall not a bad professor.
A great math teacher! He cares so much about his students.
Mr. A has been a fantastic instructor! He greatly cares about what he teaches and cares about his students. Everything is explained clearly and loves when students ask questions. It definitely makes the class easier if you're also into math as much as he is. 10/10 instructor for sure!
Mr. A was amazing! he truly cared about his students doing well and cared for each of them. not big w/ tech but in the long run it benefitted me! homework was big and really helped lock in the info and techniques. overall a sweet teacher and I a million percent would take his class again!
If you have sensory issues, do not take atterholt. If you like math teachers to have correct answers for the problems you have to solve, do not take atterholt. If you like knowing your grade, do not take atterholt. He is caring, but he is an unclear teacher and an even worse mathematician. Do not take Atterholt.
I was an honors student taking this my last semester of undergrad, making an A+ the whole time. The last week of classes, I missed a test because my professor (his COLLEAGUE), my close mentor, died horribly. He didn't let me retake it, said my "personal issues" weren't his problem, and took away my honors diploma 2 weeks before graduation. DON'T.
Mr. A was a good professor, but I can tell you right now, if you don't like doing much after class, don't take his class. He goes through slides way too quick, and you'll be reading the provided notes a lot. I still got a good grade, but it's stressful. Do not miss his class either, you will fail. Take notes and buckle up. It'll be a ride.
This guy... is not my guy. L professor honestly. Sweet guy, but can't teach my math. I wouldn't touch him with a 39 and a half foot pole. He hates my friends and it makes me sad. He did give me grace one assignment but then he lost his heart after that and it became 3 sizes to small. #Boomer #MaybeNextSeason
the only people who actually do good in his class are ones who are naturally math gifted, people like me who rant will have a extremely hard time in the class, I have not learned one single thing from his teaching method and its been over half the semester, he has not used any of the benefits of the new ages technology for his own teaching,HES BAD
Dan is interesting, I dislike his teaching style a lot, very "fire and brimstone" if you've seen those preachers. He also gives things called "Group Tests", you work on the test together, and at the end he takes one of the members papers and whatever grade that paper gets is what everyone in the group will get. Hard to find out current grade.
If you are not good at math, avoid taking at all costs. Smart and great professor, but works fast and is hard. Most of the time I would come into class and he would have a warm up problem on the board of something we didn't learn and it would personally set me back. If you get behind, you're probably screwed.
As you read through all of the reviews, keep in mind that classes are what YOU make it. Mr. A has been extremely helpful, kind, and I enjoy his style of teaching. It has been the first time in a long time that I understand math. Yes, he is old school but that makes it to where you have to work hard in life to learn the material. Use time wisely.
Do NOT miss a class or you will be left behind. Assigns homework daily and has a weekly test. Class has to correct him frequently on his mistakes during lectures and he will VERY BRIEFLY go over his work and move on while most of the class is still writing. Expects a high understanding of algebra before going into the class
Mr. A is a tough teacher. Assigns homework daily, gives weekly tests, and very fast lecturer. If you do not have a firm calc/precalc background take a different professor. Preached math instead of simply teaching and does not slow down. I attended class every day and was still lost. You also are only 'allowed' to use your calculator very rarely.
just a cruel and terrible person, does not care about those that actually need help, he's way to old for teaching and uses none of the benefits of the modern era, EXTREAMLY TEST HEAVY you literally don't even need to do the class work its all about the tests so if your not a great tester, GOOD LUCK please if you can never take his class.
He is a great professor. Mr. Atterholt may be a bit quirky sometimes but he makes sure you know the material. Honestly, as long as you do your work and actually devote time to the course, you will do well. At the beginning of the semester, I thought I would fail but then I devoted time practicing and doing all I could in class and BOOM! an A. Work.
Don't take this class with this professor. Class is taking notes on the topic of the day; you better be writing at the same pace.Thursday is a quiz day in another room. Random groups of 3; takes one of the papers, and that's the INDIVIDUAL grade. Very passionate about is work but at the same time expects you to make your own examples plus homework
