very funny, not very organized, cute in a bizarre way
really knows his stuff, good presentation
rather than memorize he taught me to derive all my formulas
take as many classes with Dan as possible
1 tip if your going to take one of dan's courses. DON'T GET BEHIND. If you do, u won't get anything from the lectures. I didn't know what was going on until I caught up 1 month in. Do your homework!
great sense of humour; accessible and helpful; fun. only way to succeed though is to keep up. the cumulative nature of the subject matter leaves no room for procrastinators! and yes, he is very hot!!
Excellent teacher learned alot. One of the smartest people know. Really funny. He makes the class really fun. Excellent lectures.
Dan always comes up with applications for even the most abstract concepts discussed in class. His lecturing style is clear and filled with humour. As mentioned by others, if you don't keep up you'll fall behind and struggle.

He knows the stuff
Very Clear
Really cares about his students understanding subjects
he is a really good teacher, clear lecture come with unclear humor! great!
One of the best math teachers at Camosun. He loves what he does and cares deeply about his students. Makes even the complex classes that he teaches accessable.
Dan is the best math instructor at Camosun. He's very clear and thorough with examples. I'm not great at math but with Dan's help I managed to pull off an A- in this course.
He is good, not too much homework or test.
So excited about math it's almost comical. I've never encountered a more inspiring math professor - always willing to help even his spare time, and more than happy to help in fields he isn't even teaching! Very approachable. Fun classes considering the subject matter (linear can be a bit dry)
Fabulous teacher! I never really liked math until I took this class, but his enthusiasm and passion for math inspired me (and I've gone on to enjoy math, now). He made linear algebra fascinating. None of the math classes I've taken since (with other teachers) have been quite as inspiring.
He teaches classes in great logic, you never get lost in his classes. He also have great knowledge in other subjects such as physics and chemistry, so he always tells you how you can apply the course material in real problems and higher level math. Moreover, he has a good sence of humorous, quite often you can hear him telling joke in the classs.
He is super nice guy!!! He makes classes so interesting, and you won't miss any class from him. And his assignments are so useful for the midterm and final
Dan is a fabulous instructor because he knows his stuff. He is also a happily married man with a lovely family and home in the country, and goats Lucy and Pepsi. His hobbies include inventing useful devices that can be used as teaching tools. Dan is clever and witty and keeps the class interested and alive with crazy examples of how math is used in
I really enjoyed taking both his Linear Algebra courses. He explains everything very nicely and his weekly assignment are absolute life savers when it comes to writing an exam: make sure you do them yourself! Tests are relatively easy as well. He also really knows his stuff! And loves it, too! Take his course, you won't regret it!
Very fair exams. Do his assignments and your mark will reflect in the midterm, and final.
Funny? Yes. Clear, inspiring, helpful, encouraging? NO. Be ready to work hard...on your own. You are expected to either a) understand it. or b) understand everything. He could use some work on his approach to handling students who don't get everything the first time he speeds through it.Aparently he's a lot easier then any of the other 109 teacher
I thought he was awesome, gave me a great background to not only get most of the other ares of math(further courses), but I showed me why some of the other math worked the way it did. Expectations were clear, and assignments and tests were fair.
Dan is a great teacher!
Dan is a very intelligent man, that being said he is not ideal for a student that struggles with math and needs a slower more thorough explanation. If you have good foundations and are a quick learner he is the right teacher for you. Assignments seem a little too difficult.
Great teacher. He is a little on the hard side, but it just means you relay have to know what is going on. If you are continuing with mathematics he is great to have.
He was a great teacher. His notes were very good with good examples.
if you like math take a course with this prof. He tells you all the stuff you want to know but will never find in the text, and isent that why we pay to take the course and not just buy the text and challenge it?
Dan is just great. A little on the hard side, but if you do all the homework and learn the proofs you'll be fine! He is incredibly creative and loves building things, you'll have to visit his office to see all his cool inventions. He knows his stuff! Don't miss any classes!
I have taken 8 math courses between UVic and camosun and Dan has, by far, the most lucid explanations of concepts. He genuinely enjoys solving problems and makes the material more engaging than any other prof has at either school.
Notes seemed clear until you take the test. Tests were surprisingly difficut. He doesnt seem to help you if you're struggling with assignments so plan on teaching yourself!
Laughed when half the class failed the midterm and suggested those that did leave the class. Ridiculous marker that spends no time looking at work and is quick to give a question 0/5 for a mistake as simple writing 'z' instead of 's'.
I enjoy his classes and he explains things clearly, He'll help you if you ask, but you have to ask specific questions. Read the book and do the chapter problems, it'll help a lot.
The course became harder but weekly assignments were very helpful because they made me review every week. 3 Quiz and final were fairly easy if you followed the course with the assignments. Class notes are quite useful for exams.
A dedicated teacher but doesnt explaing very well. His writing is horrible. I spent half the class trying to figure out what he wrote. He cant read it himself. He's in LOVE with maple. Expects you to know the material beforehand. Wouldnt recommend.
Great teacher, very helpful, knows what he is teaching very well, very lenient with late assignments :p , If you did well with your pre-requisites, you wont have much trouble understanding. If you understand his assignments, then you can easily get a B+/A- in his course.
I love dan, one of the best profs at camosun. Absolutely good at what he does and makes the class interesting. Also his making is fair :)
Although Dan is a great guy and all. But i wouldn't recommend him for math 125. Dan knows what he is teaching but cannot put it into action. When he writes on the board it is sometimes impossible to see what he is writing.
Dan is a good guy and a good teacher. Gets you ready for more math. Be prepared for tough assignments that take a long time to complete. If you go to every class and really pay attention you will be fine.
Very good Prof, marks assignment and tests very fast and unlike some profs, his assignments are always harder than his tests. So if you can learn the content on the assignments (without the help of wolfram alpha...) you will do just fine. It is still a hard course but I would definitely take his class again.
I would not recommend taking linear algebra with Dan. His notes are scattered and tests do not always reflect the assignments or what was taught in class. Try to avoid.
DON'T BUY THE TXTBK FROM THE CC BOOKSTORE! It's awful; there's hardly any Q's with answers in it. Dan says it's the best book he could find - obviously he didn't look very hard. Always complains & does things differently from the book. Go somewhere else (eg. Chapters) & find a linear algebra textbook w the chapters in a similar order & buy it.
Dan sure loves physics. Always goes off topic, cutting time out to go over assignments, which are tougher than txtbk Q's & tests are even harder. But the good news is that 4th year physics majors say this is the hardest course they've ever taken! So it's all smooth going from here on out, right? Get yourself a great study group & good luck!
Dan really is a great guy but his notes are messy and typically all over the place. He is quick to give a 05 on a question with a minor mistake. Not worth the effort.
Lectures & assignments were straight forward. MATH125 isn't a pre-requisite, but it's really helpful to have. DON'T FORGET ANYTHING FROM MATH101! You'll need it all - series, convergence, integrals of trigonometry functions, everything. I hear Dan's most helpful with the not-so-smart students. Don't stress over maple labs. Dan's the best. Enjoy
By far an amazing prof. Don't know what the others are ranting about, sure his handwriting is a little a unclear, but he is always delighted to clarify. DO NOT skip his class,be attentive and engaging in the lecture and you will be fine. book is not super important, just borrow it from the math help center. make use of his office hours!! Work HARD!
Fantastic prof. attend all classes and work hard! he does not like slackers. Dan makes a relatively tough course easy and intuitive by giving real life examples. USE his office hours! he ALWAYS helps, provided you have actually done your part of studying or trying, won't spoon feed you the assignment answers(DUH!). Always willing to clarify things.
Assignments are tough but great practice for the quizzes. I enjoyed his quick fire wit and he knows what he is talking about. He's not really skilled at teaching struggling students, I struggled tremendously in this course until I found the website of another math teacher from the same department. Can't say I recommend him but he was ok.
Dan is hands-down the best teacher I've ever had. He makes you work for marks, but you feel like you've deserved everything you get. Very sarcastic, but in a good way. Also one of the smartest guys ever. His lectures are clear and easy to follow, and he will help you if you are struggling.
His lectures are hard to follow. He likes to stand in front of what he is writing and then erase it and move on to the next thing before you have had a chance to see it! You have to be able to keep up, or try to teach yourself from the text.
I normally get straight A's in Uni/College... I got a C. If you don't understand what he is lecturing about he will not explain it to you. He skips TONS of steps in the few mediocre examples he tries to do. Assignments are vague and tests aren't much better. YOU WILL ONLY LEARN FROM THE TEXT BOOK... which he doesn't follow. FLY YOU FOOLS!
Doesn't provide any practice problems, or former exams for students. Insulted students, and did not seem open to helping. Had a very weak understanding of the course curriculum from his lectures, only savior was teaching myself from the textbook and khan academy for what turned out to be a relatively easy course.
Doesnt make an effort to present lecture material clearly, inlcass examples are often wrong, no practice questions or tests. Camosun calls this a 1st year course but it's not(BCtransferguide). Doesnt have a website. Lazy marker. Rushes material. Advice, take this class with someone else. Your GPA and understand will both be better off.
Avoid this prof at all costs. Not because I did poorly, but this prof needs to be retired.
Dan is one of few profs at camosun who actually forces his students to learn. If your math skills are not good you will fall behind quickly. You will not do well by just coming to class. You need to actually spend the time to read the textbook and solve problems. Students who do poorly with him will be the ones who don't take the time to study.
Had him this semester. I got an A. If you are good at math you will find his classes easy. All the bad reviews are most likely from terrible math students and or idiots.
Dan is a fun guy. Although, I must go against the previous comment. Dan does not explain things very well in class; He sometimes sound like he is confused about where to go next and this confusion is reflected on the weaker students. I got a B only because I had to work the graveyard shift before the final. Lazy marker. Take matrix at UVIC instead.
Dan has interesting lectures and is a fun person. The problem with Dan is that he does not give practice tests or even practice questions. The only study material is the assignments with one or two questions per unit?!?! Also very quick to take off marks on assignments and tests for the slightest mistake. Would never take one of Dans classes again
Dan is hands down one of the worst teachers Ive had. If you were stuck on something and asked for help in or out of class he would act like your an idiot who dosnt study. Would take off marks for the most ridiculous things on assignments and tests. Gave off a definitive me vs you vibe to his course. Avoid
Dan is a great teacher for serious math students. Exerienced, smart, always willing to answer questions and is very patient. Assignment grading is harsh but clear and easy to follow after the first one. Course is proof heavy, so do the practice proof questions in the textbook, it's a skill you'll need to get through the tests.
Great instructor, really knows what he is doing. The class was hard but Dan was always willing to help me when I needed him to. Highly recommended.
Dan was a great instructor, one of the best I have has so far. The class was not simple and requires a lot of homework but if you are a serious student this should not be a problem. He has a good sense of humor.
Dan is outstanding and extremely passionate about mathematics. He's hilarious and will help you see the applications of the material you are learning. I loved learning about bodies and the flow of water with differential calculus. He gives you enough material to learn the course but will not hold your hand. Learn by yourself outside of class.
Best Math Professor at Camosun. Need to be regular to class, otherwise won' t pass. Hilarious and inspirational. Adds practical essence to the class.
Dan grades by gut instinct (his words). Which is convenient to have no rubric to follow, because this guy invests the absolute minimum into teaching. His favourite words are dumb, stupid, and simple. God help you if you dont understand something because hes been doing it 30 years and can not conceive how someone might not find it simple.
Great guy. This was a hard class but he answered all my questions without making me feel stupid:)
Im currently taking Dans class online (because of covid-19, obviously). Unless you have no other option I strongly urge you not to take this class, he expects you to teach the class to yourself and his notes are impossible to read. He comes across as not caring about his students learning, but rather making his job easier for himself.
This guy sucks at teaching math. I am currently taking his math 100 course. Due to covid, all classes at comosun are online, and i dont know if thats the reason why this guy has sucked so hard, but he has. instead of using the d2l online program like most proffesors at comosun, he is conducting the entire class through email. he doesnt help at all
Dan is the worst professor Ive dealt with from Camosun College. Because of covid, this course is online. Dan refuses to use d2l or zoom. His lectures consist of poorly hand written notes that he scans and sends to you via email. You will be left to teach yourself this course through YouTube tutorials and textbooks. He simply does not teach.
Dan is simply choosing not to teach in the face of an online environment. His "lectures" are handwritten quickly jotted down notes. This class essentially keeps a record of your progress through the textbook, calling this a class at all is misleading. If he is your only option, I strongly suggest taking this course next semester.
COVID-19 meant I had to take this class online. Maybe Dan is better in person, I don't know, but online, I suggest you avoid his class. Sends you to the math help centre or the textbook if you need help. You will be your own teacher. Doesn't provide helpful class content. Unfortunately he's unapproachable with a poor attitude for an instructor.
Terrible prof, refuses to participate online.
Please Do not not not take his class, he is a horrible profes, he said he will give a chance to allo us to drop a quiz, but, he didn't. the most thing pissed me off is he said he has never said we can drop a quiz, but it is literally on the outline that he gave us. He is so hilarious. He told us "for the most of test you don't have to think" WT??
If you want to teach yourself Calc and have a prof who does nothing, Dan is your guy. Notes were not helpful. Zero feedback on exams/assignments. He didnt write the final. And he gave final exam information 3 days before the exam. All math courses require you to work hard outside of class but they also require someone to actually teach!
In his MATH 125, he always committees to prevent people to approach A; however, it is hard to fail this course with him.
Great teacher, always willing to help. Very knowledgeable. This course was not easy but Dan made it better.
Easily the best instructor I have had so far. Clear lectures and clear expectations. This class requires a lot of work but the instructor is approachable and always willing to help. Tests are hard so make sure you keep up with the lectures.
Dan is great! He knows what he's talking about and makes calculus interesting by providing lots of applications. Dan won't spoon-feed you, but he is always there to help. The course isn't easy but if you put in the effort you will do well.
if you already know calculus, he's a fine teacher (marks assignments/test quick), but otherwise, he's not a great teacher. I learned way more from khan academy/youtube. I also did not find him very approachable
I do not understand the bad reviews. He made the class interesting and I found him to be approachable. I think he would be good for harder math classes as well.
This is a late review . I had Dan for math 100 last Fall. He clearly knows what he is teaching and was willing to help me whenever I asked. He may come across as a bit indifferent at first but that is not the case. I think he is secretly nice, you just have to actually work for your grade. Good teacher, I would easily take a course with him again.
He's a great teacher. I only wish he was more accessible outside class. Also, we didn't get our studying material for the final until very late. And I wish there was a practice test for the final. Other than that, his homeworks are great, and his lectures are great. He is funny and charismatic.
Assignments and tests marked quickly but feedback on mistakes is minimal. Expect long tests with very low time. Lectures include excellent examples but are tough to follow due to a fast pace paired with messy chalkboard writing. Lectures are not posted online, and Dan can only be reached in person. You get little help, but that forces improvement.
