Great teacher. I took him as long as I could. Wish he taught some higher level classes.

He is a very good teacher, and his test and quizzes are very fair and only made to test what should be known from the course work. He is generally just a nice man.

I took Dr. Butcher for Online English. I ended up dropping his class halfway through the semester, but it was because I was lazy and didn't do the work, not because of him. He is very fair, very easy to work with, and the assignments are clear and easy to complete. Just be sure to meet ALL DUE DATES

Mr. Butcher is a WONDERFUL teacher...his quizzes and assignments are fair and not hard as long as you come to class. He is very understanding, very helpful, and loves what he does for a living. I would take him for any EH class!

I took Mr. Butcher's online EH 102 class. It was my first online class, so I was afraid that it wouldn't be as good as a regular class, but it ended up being better than the regular English class I had last semester. Don't take this class unless you know you'll do the work on your own.

Dr. Butcher is a wonderful teacher. He makes class interesting and makes assignments clear-cut and relevant, not busy work. He gardes fairly and papers/tests are not hard at all. You know what to expect. I would take him for ANY english class! One of the nicest teachers I know!

Oh my gosh I love Professor Butcher he is the best literature teacher ever!!I hate literature but his class is interesting.You don't want to fall asleep because he makes it fun,funny,and you just want to listen.He cares about what he does.The readings aren't boring you will want to read.I would take him for the second lit but he doesn't teach it.

Great Professor. gives the easiest quizzes (4 those that read) and grades really fairly. if u really think u wrote a C paper but hope 4 an A u got a C. lol but overall he's a great person as well as a great professor. And he doesnt get wierd with the african american poets/writers. Gotta Love That!

Mr.Buthcher is awesome I loved his classes, I took him for both onlin English and Lit. Quizzes were easy if you did the reading. He offers more than enough help when you dont understand nd he responds to your emails asap. He's the coolest english professor out there Thanks for EVERYTHING Mr.Butcher. When I or anyone didn't understand something he cleared it up for us and gave us plenty of time to get them done.I had a C in English 101 in the classroom(avoid Ebert) but I got an A in this class. There is no way that I could improve in that much during Christmas break. He is a good online teacher,but he may be different in the classroom.

Mr. Butcher is an awesome teacher. He explains everything thoroughly. His grading is fair and he is upfront about that. If you get an 89.9 in his class you will have a B not an A! But overall I enjoyed this class. I must admit it was a lot of reading but if you read the material you will pass the class!!

Butcher is cake! I didn't even read and I got an A...his quizzes are easy..and he grades easy if you write fairly well. Definitely take his class if you can!

Good instructor. Easy tests and quizzes. Reading is a little difficult to keep up with, but the writing is minimal.

He is very unorganized. Most of our assignments were given out only a few weeks before the final, so it was really crammed in at the end. He is a really easy grader as long as you make a good effort/argument. I ended with an A and my papers never were full length and I never did the readings; just went to class.

Very easy class. I thought his grading was more fair than any of my other english classes. I made B's and C's on all of my papers in other classes, but I made A's in Butcher's class. As long as you go to class, and do the work, don't be worried about if you are a good writer or not. When he gives tests or quizzes they are extremely easy.

Mr. Butcher is very helpful, but his classes are very boring. He is a great professor, but actually sitting through class was awful! As long as you go to class and study your notes though, you will be fine.

I took him for world lit I. He was really nice and quite helpful. He was really into the class and was very down to earth. I would reccommend him to others. Be prepared to write quite a few essays and ALOT of reading but hey duh it is a lit class.

Extremely unfair in grading. Although he is a nice guy, he is also very religious and tries to connect all of the reading back to religious symbolism. His method of grading papers is outrageous and I would recommend avoiding the class

Dan is awesome. He is helpful and very polite. As long as you show up to class, read the assignments, and be prepared to actually discuss the readings you will do fine. He is super easy to talk to and grades fairly. TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!

I just finihed his online class. He is very understanding. If I was confused about what he wanted, I could email him and I received a quick response. It took some time to get several grades back, because things happen. However, you know what type of paper you are turning in. My grades were never a surprise. I would take him again. Great experience.

Professor Butcher is extremely helpful & willing to go out his way to help. He only helps those who ask & the amount of help you get is proportionate to the effort you put into his class. A lot of reading (duh) but almost all of his choices were interesting. Do the work, give it a good effort & you will get an A. I would definately take him again

I took him online Spring 2008. Because its an online class clear communication was a must and he was. If I did not understand something or needed help, I would email him and he would respond immediately. My husband got sick and he gave me an extension. He was very understanding. I found that he graded just as he said he would. I loved his class!

very helpful but papers require alot of thought. grade fairly. did not give a crystaly clear syllabus for online students gave assignments randomly.

I took his online class, and it was fantastic. Whenever we were all confused by an assignment he would push back the due date and go into a thorough explanation accompanied by two example essays of work he considered to be an A. Very easy to contact if you need help. I would strongly recommend this class.

Love this prof. I wish I could take more literature classes from him. He makes it relatable and very easily understandable too. Very helpful. Journal posts are easy. Definitely take him!!

I liked Mr. Butcher alot! He was really nice and funny sometimes. As long as you come to class and do the journal posts (which aren't that bad) you should be fine! Great teacher!

I took Butcher over the summer. He tries to make the course fairly interesting by involving the class in discussions. He does not scale grades at all but that should not be an issue because he doesn't make the class too hard. Recommended.

You won't find a better teacher for American Lit 223 than Dan. Unlike some teachers, he is interested in students getting something out of his class. There are no boring, dull, useless assignments. I would highly recommend this class to anyone else. BTW, I did the online version of the class.

I cannot say enough good things about Dan! He was absolutely wonderful! He is open to suggestions and values the student's opinion. He is not stuck in his ways and will do anything to accomodate the students. The thing someone else said about him not giving any extra points (89.9 is a B not an A) is true, but that shouldn't be a problem!

I took it online, and it was SO easy. You do have to put forth some effort, but it's an easy A and Dan is a GREAT professor and will help you with anything! The whole class is just writing journals, and two short essays for the midterm (haven't taken final yet) I've made 100's on all assignments so far.

I dreaded taking a lit course after my bad experience with 102 but Dan is the man! Pat attention to the in class discussions and do the online journal posts. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Dan Butcher is a wonderful professor! He is one of my favorite professors in my 3 years at UAB. He is very open to talk about Christianity and making it the focal point of the class, which I didnt mind. Hes test are super easy and brought me back to highschool. a MUST TAKE!

Nice teacher. He gave boring topics to write about but always graded fairly. When anything was unclear he would explain it and push back the due date. Was hard to get in touch with sometimes.

Awesome teacher! I was required to take EH 218 as part of degree requirements. I hated literature prior to this class. But now I rather enjoy it thanks to this instructor. If you are required to take Literature, you should definitely take Mr. Butcher! I'm sure he's fantastic for his other classes as well.

Dan is the teacher you want for EH 223. He is SO easy! The class mainly consists of online journal entries. You read a short narrative and then write a short paragraph answering a question he provides. In class, he talks about the journal posts. You have a few Lit. terms tests and 2 papers the whole semester. TAKE HIS CLASS! EASY A!

His class is easy. However, he does not respond to emails in a timely manner. His website seemed cool at first but then came the issue of knowing how you were actually doing in class. And he does not provide adequate feedback on essays. I got a C on part of the midterm and he did not tell me why. I also hate using Google Drive.

Great teacher. If you turn the paper in early for advise, you will get an A.

The whole class consisted of 2 papers, a final, midterm, 2 literary terms tests, and journal entries. Send him your papers for him to look at. He gives great advice, and I made A's on the papers I did that with. He grades them tough and is confusing. But, he is a great teacher! He also cancelled class 5 times during the semester.

WAY TOO MUCH info. packed into 1 class (never finishes lecture). Outside assignments before EVERY SINGLE class. HUGE midterm & only 1 other exam (final) + separate paper. CANCELS class at last minute WAY TOO MUCH. But overall, I enjoyed his lectures, I'm not a lit person and I enjoyed learning from him, & as long as you work hard you'll get an A.

I took his a class a couple years ago and still think back to what I learned often. I don't like literature, especially older literature I can't understand, but Dan really helped clarify the readings and I learned so much in his class. The class is not hard, requires work, and is enjoyable. All of what should be expected in a required course.

Dan is an awesome teacher. likes for students to be engaged in class but if your a little shy don't worry, he will just continue to talk. He cancels class a lot and his assignments don't take long to complete. work load is definitely light! Don't be late to class on quiz or test day. great personality and very understanding. best English teacher!

Dan is one of my favorites. He loves to engage students and we have good conversations in class. He cancels class often. Although, there will almost always be an assignment due before the next class, but they aren't hard. Highly recommend.

Use a website to complete all work. Each week you have two journals you have to post, and sometimes you have a quiz on a journal topic. Have a Midterm and a Final where you must know worldview, quotes and titles of work by authors. Also have an essay with a minimum word count of 650, instructions was clear. I would take his online class again.

Great teacher who often invites class discussion. Just do your work and study for the midterm and final. While I did enjoy his class, he does cancel often at the last minute, which is great if you live on campus, but I didn't. Commuters may have an issue with this. Regardless, I still recommend this class. He's very inquisitive and laid back.

Professor Butcher is really nice and helpful. He understands if you dont feel comfortable speaking in front of the class. You only do one essay at the end, and the rubric is very clear. The class is basically all reading and discussion. You take a lot of easy quizzes on the readings. You have a simple journal due before every class on his website.

Approachable, and caring. Not afraid to let you know if an idea is out of your reach, but will give you all the help you need in growing into your own writing. Expect to be paired with other students in the class.

Dan is a good teacher and he makes class fun, but the class is all reading (duh, it's literature). There are weekly discussions worth 2 points which in my opinion it should be more since those carry the whole class. There is a midterm, one paper, and a final all worth 100 points and if you don't do well on those you'll regret it.

Dan is an outstanding professor. Like, he made one of the most boring subjects known to man actually interesting. Seriously, I was excited to do the assigned readings and questions because I knew an amazing discussion would follow. I learned a lot in this class. Dan is also very reasonable and is always there to help!

I really enjoyed taking this class with Professor Butcher, it was easy and I got what I needed out of it. His readings were good selections and his exams were easy. I would highly recommend taking his class.

I took his online class and it was the easiest class I have ever taken. No required zooms only due dates for work. Wrote 3 essays and he was an easy grader. He was also very understanding for late work. Grades were based on completion. Would recommend this online course to everyone.

Professor Butcher is extremely kind, he genuinely seems to care about his students. Unfortunately there's normally three assignments due a week, so you really have to keep up with your work. Since it's literature, you read multiple passages that he provides to the class; you don't have to go out and buy a bunch of books. He's a fantastic professor!

Super easy A. Contract grading so it was based on completion. Had to ask for a couple extensions but he was very lenient about it. Super nice guy.

Probably one of the best professors I have ever encountered. He is so kind and understanding and wants you to succeed. His grading is different but in a way makes it easier for you to get an A. Great Professor! The Literature you read, watch, or listen to really opens your eyes and gives you a new appreciation for Literature, and changes the definition for you if you think of Literature in a more traditional sense. I enjoyed the class and Professor Butcher has some good stories to share.

I enjoyed Professor Butcher for EH101 online! He's very understanding and kind. For essays, the feedback he gives is constructive and noncritical. The resources for essays he provides are helpful! He does contract grading based on assignment completion. He is honestly one of the best instructors I've ever had in my whole academic career.

Taking EH 101 online with Professor Butcher was amazing and I would take him again for every English course that I need. There are 3 major essays as well as weekly reflections. He is very understanding and helps whenever you need it. His assignments are very interesting and thought-provoking. Contacting him is easy and he responds in no time.

Easy class if you show up, do the work (according to the grading contract), and put in the effort. He is very understanding of extenuating circumstances but expects you to show up due to group activities (peer review). Simple and straightforward with lots of resources--he requires you to utilize the University Writing Center as part of your grade.

Prof. Butcher runs a chill EH101 class with a contract grading system. Just put in the effort and you'll get an easy A. The feedback is helpful, and resources like unstuck AI make essay prep a breeze. Definitely recommend for a smooth general ed credit.
