Dan is a great teacher and makes math enjoyable even when it shouldn't be
What a great professor! TAKE DAN IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE!!! This is my second time taking this course and Dan has been the first math teacher in a LONG time to make me understand! He is sooo funny, and so excited about teaching!
Dan rocks! Even though he needs a little ritalin, he makes math a kinda fun. His enthusiasm is off the charts, everyone should take his class.
Dr.Canada was able to show me how exciting math can really be. He has helped me in deciding to become a math minor.
Dan is overly excited, grading scale extrememly hard, too high. Avoid taking this professor.
HE'S THE BEST! He totally understands we have other classes and a life outside of math. Very enthusiastic and willing to help, even in the middle of his "lectures".
If you like a prof who is very excited about what they are doing than he is the one to take. He is so helpful even if you are not in his class. If you do the work in the class you will learn a lot.
If you don't mind a kindergarden teacher with the most annoying personality you've ever seen, this man is for you. Oh, and a 77% is a 2.0 in this class, too.
Ridiculous grading scale. He's very condensending. He won't answer homework questions, what he does is make up a "similar" question and get part way through that and basically says that should get us the rest of the way through. Absolutely ridiculous. I would not take him if at all possible.
Dan Canada is the by far the worst teacher that I have ever had. He is condiscending and sarcastic. I would not recomend him to any one. He makes it impossible to pass his class. I have never had a problem with math before, and I could not understand a thing he was teaching. He was very unclear in his teaching.
Dan Canada is a terrible teacher. He breaks all the rules of being an effective educator. He belittles students, grades unfairly, creates a tense, hostile environment, and couldn't directly answer a question if his life depended on it. I passed the class but only about 25% of us did. That pretty much paints the picture for you.
This man is terrible! He is happy about his subject but his instructions are unclear. He tests on information not always covered in class or the book. I strongly recommend that you do not take his class!
He is a bit strange at first, but once you get used to his class it becomes pretty easy as long as you do the work and come to class. had a few good laughs
He will tell you that he will help you anyway he can and then doesn't have time. He says that you don't need the book and to listen to the "canada" way and then marks it wrong on the test. He's very unclear and when the class gets frustrated he doesn't care or help them. He sucks as a teacher and treats you like a 1st grader.
totally goofy, but amusing.
I hated math before I took Canada. He is super enthusiastic about what he does. He loves teaching, he loves students, and he loves math! I enjoyed myself and did well in here.
Most annoying teacher ever. He is too overly excited about math.
dr canada is awesome, learn to be amused by his enthusiasm and you will love the class, he makes the class interesting and is very clear and fair. ive never had a math class that i learned so much in and enjoyed as much as this
If you like being treated like a 1st grader then take his class. There is a lot of busy work as homework...He feels that his class is the only class you are taking and just keeps adding the homework. RUN FAR FAR AWAY FROM HIS CLASS!!
Dan Canada is the worst professor I've ever had. He was rude to his students and was not helpful. I once raised my hand for a question, he pointed at me, nodded, and then ignored me. When I asked for his help he suggested "I figure it out". I dropped my minor because of him.
Dan's a great, energetic teacher - You might need to work hard outside of class, but at least in class he's very clear about "what to expect". Pay attention to what's happening in class, do the homework well ahead of time, and you should be fine.
Dr. Canada is a great prof. He is super excited and animated about math (to the point of being a little goofy,) but that means his classes are never dry or boring. He assigns a lot of HW, but he is very helpful! :-) If you have questions, make an appt. with him and he will really help you out. One of the best math teachers I've ever had.
Dan is well-meaning and his enthusiasm is very entertaining without a doubt. His interest in the subject is apparent and appreciated. However, it seems like behind this very elementary method of teaching college students is a hint of a condescending attitude. His tests are a bit too long, causing many students to make mistakes due to a time crunch
Dr. Canada made math way more interesting than other professors. He is really excited about "math action" and is very engaging. He assigns quite a bit of homework, but if you spend time practicing the problems you will do well on the exams. I was struggling a little, but I went to see Dr. Canada in his office and he really helped me out.
Don't take Dan Canada for Math 115. The course is for students in the arts, and he makes the course much more difficult than it needs to be. He gives a test two chapters after you cover the material. Tests are long, and he is not that helpful. He gives homework over stuff he doesn't cover.
Dan wasted my tuition money. If you want to take a simple class like 115 over again, take Dan first, then take someone else for sure.
The worst math teacher in the math dept. by far. If you can register for a Jane Lane do it for Math 212, she actually cares if the students learn or not. Here's a little math question for you...DR.DAN..Look at your pass/fail ratio and see if you are an effective teacher or not? How about them apples?
He has a very annoying personality and while asks for questions never really addresses what you asked. His grading scale goes down by a GPA point with every percentage you go down. I passed the class, but I didn't learn the concepts to the point that I'd be able to teach them.
He was great but not very helpful when I had a question. His enthusiasm drove me nuts but he's the best math teacher I've had at Eastern.
Dan seems like he's more interested in "Testing" his students, rather than helping them. He needs to grab the bull by the horns and be the quintessential Math teacher by showing excellent examples and actually helping his students.
Ironically, what a teacher SHOULD NOT DO in the classroom with students---DAN DOES. For example, he DOES NOT allow enough time for his tests. 2. He DOES NOT model excellent examples pertinent to tests he administers. If I did this with my elementary kids, they would flunk the class.
Dr. Dan is dope! look, everyone struggles with math including me. If you want to get math out of the way at eastern he's the guy to take. He's pretty crazy and random but tests are pretty easy, just have to study a little. Quite bit of homework but not as much as most 115 classes. Take him and get math out of the way!
Dr Dan was an interesting professor, but quite condescending. He would refer you to your "buddies" with any specific problem, as far as math goes, it was interesting but his grading scale is a bit skewwed. Ex 2.0 is 75%
I felt the book was a better teacher. He regularly did the examples presented in the book, rather than showing us how to do problems with his own ideas.
Dr. Dan has a very enthusiastic personality but is a horrible teacher. He is teaching us how to be teachers, yet he fails at it himself. He beats around the bush when you ask him a question in class and a peer could have answered your question within 30 seconds. I do not recommend him if you don't have to take the class. Otherwise, he grades easy!
Do not take a class with Dr. Dan unless you want your GPA ruined. He never answers the student's questions and he doesn't try to help you at all. He makes the tests too long to finish and he knows that ahead of time. He could care less about whether you pass or not.
Do NOT take a class with Dr. Dan. He is super nice but he is an AWFUL teacher.. He makes everything so much more confusing than it needs to be and talks to you like you're a dummy.. He is so unhelpful and doesn't seem to care about your concerns or questions.. He's a nice guy but a TERRIBLE teacher!!!! DONT DO IT!!!
Worst teacher I've had at EWU. He doesn't post grades, he doesn't answer questions, and he can't explain anything. The tests are so long that they are impossible to finish. I've never not gotten an A in a math class until I took math with him. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!!!
I've heard a lot of people complain about him but he is a really great professor. Just like with any course you can only learn so much in class but you also have to put effort outside of class e.g doing practice problems. His homeworks are easy A's if you do them. They are straight out of the book so nothing difficult. Test are long but easy enough
Dan is a nice guy. He has a quirky sense of humor. He's comes to class prepared and enthusiastic, even at 8am. EXCEPT, he moves through the material way too fast. I went to class everyday, did the homework, and just passed. Not an easy A class. You gotta work for the grade.
Dr. Dan is a quarky man. You can tell that he LOVES his job and LOVES teaching. He does move very quickly, but many college corses are like that. Tests and Quizes are tough but It helped me having a small study group. You do NEED to go to class!! If you miss a day you miss a lot of the material he teaches.
There is a lot of homework, but he gives you a week to do it. Even then I won't collect it until the end of the quarter. You have to calculate your own grade. The class is not easy. He tends tends to be hard to understand. So I would recommend tutoring outside of class or having an almost complete understanding of algebra before the course starts.
Take this class from any other teacher. I am typically an A-B student, and good at math, but I did awful in this class. I had a tutor and studied a lot and ended up with a 2.6 when I needed a 2.8 for it to count. He gives you a certain time for tests and no more. He is not very helpful and moves really fast. He knows his stuff, but can't teach.
Very knowledgeable, and understands that math is hard for people. Talks really fast. Although attendance is optional, it is extremely helpful. Kind, friendly guy who's very enthusiastic about statistics.
He constantly talks about the time remaining in class, the lights, and he'll call you "my friends" like 100 times every day. Very distracting. However, I suck at math and I passed my first time taking this class so if I can do it so can you!! He's overall a pretty good teacher. If you're taking this class make sure to attend every day!
Literally worst professor at Eastern. Doesnt teach well, refuses to answer questions inside and outside of class, talks to us like children, tells you the time every 5 minutes, says "Because I can see it" when explaining how he did something, and never finishes problems because he says "it doesn't matter what the answer is." His class frustrates me
Dan Canada is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't explain things and doesn't finish his problems. Don't bother asking him a question because he will divert the question. He knows what he is talking about, but doesn't know how to explain to his students how to do it. Don't take him unless you feel like learning nothing.
Dr. Canada is a joke. I dropped my major because I refuse to be "educated by someone like him any longer. He spends most of the class telling us what he is going teach and laughing at his own "jokes" and telling himself good job after not finishing a problem and moving on. Don't take his class if you want to actually learn
Dr. Canada was one of the worst teachers I have had in my experience at Eastern. He rarely was available outside of class, and didn't offer good feedback when he was. He made the material more confusing than it should have been and talked to us like children. He made me feel stupid by implying we wouldn't pass his class the first time.
The thing with Canada is, he dances around the answers. I'm not sure 1 question asked by students in class this quarter was answered-maybe that's his tactic, but it was hard for me to follow. Go to class. He does give a million examples of problems and the same types are on exams. He is accessible and willing to help outside of class.
Hardest math class Ive ever taken. Im usually an A or B student and I am not passing the class. He talks in a very monotone voice and the tests are more difficult than the practice we do and the homework. He expects you to read ahead so the class work is mostly examples of what you shouldve read
Each exam was taken 2 weeks after we learned the content. Homework is done from the textbook, meaning I had to look to youtube and other sources for explanations. No grades are posted online. Only 4 exams, 1 final, and a pile of HW count for your grade. Very unclear grading on tests. Doesn't answer questions clearly. Teaches way to quick.
Dr. Dan speaks the entirety of each class in a voice that is very soft, it is perfect to fall asleep to. I only appreciated one thing about his class which was that he posted all of the notes online and it was easily accessible.
All in all good teacher he's fun and enjoys his job and time with students. He is very willing to take time out of class to help as well. However, he moves pretty fast through his lecture and every day that isn't an exam is a full lecture from him. A portion of the grade is attendance but I got full points even though I missed like half of the days
He is a nice guy that knows a lot about math. Other than that, he is mediocre at best. He completed 2 problems on the board in class in the first 4 weeks and he expects you to literally retain all information you have learned in previous math classes. I took the class a second time just to boost my grade, and I almost did worse.
My favorite part about this class is watching my classmates who have been with me in my major for several quarters drop out because of a lousy professor. That professor is Dr. Canada who knows nothing about the learning process. Please avoid taking this professor at all costs. You will regret it if you do.
Dan Canada is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He does not know how to teach at all. The class structure is very unclear and confusing. He is also the worst grader ever. His grading is scribbles on paper, he does not use canvas or give you anyway of seeing your grades. Do not take this class unless you have another way of learning it.
He does not use canvas, gives no feedback on quizes, homework is due at the end of the quarter so you don't get feedback there either, he does not review for quizes or exams and he grades very harshly. He seems very scatter brained and his lectures make no sense half the time. Don't take his class unless you have to.
No clear grading criteria. Exams are not meant to be finished in the given time. Refers to the time remaining often. Doesn't ever explain problems that involve algebra or pre-calc even though this is a calc class. Makes random noises like "boo" "ahhh" "ehhhh". Does not use canvas and restates the questions a student asks.
He is crazy. Hes all over the place during lectures and very hard to follow.
Dan Canada is honesty the worst professor I have ever had. He goes off on odd rants that do not make sense, and after he does an annoying breathing thing. I think is a laugh. If you decide to ask a question prepare to be even more confused as he will interrupt you and then say what he already said. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
He doesn't use canvas. doesn't give you a running grade, only a grade at the end of the class. Expects you to calculate your own grade on homework that you don't turn in till the end of the course. Doesn't answer questions, only tells you to read the syllabus/memo even If you need clarification. Doesn't explain very well.
this guy sucks. His classes are confusing and make no sense. You don't use the book in class and he just pulls out random stuff. When you have a question he loops around in a million different ways and doesn't actually answer your question.
DR. DAN IS THE WORST MATH PROFESSOR AT EASTERN. He talks to fast, doesn't understand social interactions, and is scatterbrained. I went to his office to receive my grade and he had me do 12 math problems that had nothing to do with my grade, and still did not show me my grade. He should be avoided at all costs, he will fail you no matter what.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. After talking with the kids in my class, it is clear we all shared the same experience. Run from this man like he is COVID-19. You will fail.
This professor expects you to remember absolutely everything from previous courses. His exam questions may require you to use things from long ago that he didn't review. He also tends to answer certain questions with "that's in the syllabus" or "that's in your pre-calculus textbook" instead of just answering them. Notes are online at least.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Throughout the entire quarter, I did not see him or interact with him once. I never saw any reply to any questions that I sent to him, and I essentially taught myself for the entirety of the class. Aside from a few moments where our clunky online book came in barely useful. Avoid this teacher if possible.
All these reviews scared me, but I went through with the class anyway. It ended up not being nearly as bad as I thought it would be. He provided videos and example problems. There was either a quiz or a text each week, only 3 assignments, and a final. I really enjoy math, so the concepts weren't too difficult for me. Not that bad!
Before taking our first exam he emailed me and asked me if I wanted him to drop me from his class since he thought I wouldnt do as well as others. I never replied and soon after passed the first exam with an A+ to prove him wrong. He grades hard and makes you turn in a 20 page minimum written out paper end of quarter online. Hes old school.
This is the worst professor I have ever had, he does not teach us he just assumes you know what to do. He does not answer your question and refers you to the module.I was lost the entire quarter because he didnt do anything helpful
When I walked to class I would HOPE I got hit by a car by how much I hated his class. He is a nice guy, but his lectures were sooo boring and if I asked a question he would either tell me it's in the syllabus or the textbook, make me feel stupid, or wouldn't even answer my question. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES
Honestly I don't have anything nice to say sadly. I wanted to like him, but he does not give good lectures. He only lectures in the way he likes to be taught for instance he is a very visual learner he says so he only teaches in that way. When you ask questions he doesn't give an answer or explain how he got to a math answer.
By far the worst professor at Eastern. Doesnt answer your ?s, makes office hours during other class times, grades weird(unclear), makes weird noises. Refers you back to syllabus and modules. Puts random ?s on quizzes and exams we havent gone over/from other math classes. Talks over you. Refers to the clock ALOT. Take this class somewhere else.
Dr. Dan Canada is 100% the worst professor I've ever had. He does absolutely nothing for his students to succeed and he does not do his job. One of the laziest professors I've ever encountered. He does not teach, he assumes you know everything before he starts lecturing, and does not help one bit. I want my money back.
Honestly all of these reviews scared me. But what I realized after taking this class was that all of these reviews are made by people who aren't willing to put in the work to pass his class. He doesn't require attendance on "instructional" days, but you should go as much as possible. Study for quizzes and test, turn in homework and you'll be fine.
Prof. Canada's lectures were very difficult to follow, and I was forced to spend time every night re-learning the content he ha taught that day. It felt more like a review for high-level math (some of which I had never even learned) rather than an intro to elementary ed math. Would not have taken him then, certianly would not take again.
I really did want to like him, but his teaching style was very difficult to understand or enjoy. He assumes you already know the material and avoids questions by telling you it's on Canvas/in the syllabus. Very disheartening, even while receiving a good grade I did not feel my understanding of math or teaching was improved in any way. Do not recc.
This is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He never uses the gradebook and doesn't give you anything to study for the exams. Also, we take the exams 2 weeks after we have learned the material and after starting completely new material. Do not take this class
Don't take this class
He was awful and his class was by far the hardest class i have ever taken and it should not have been. I had to re-take it and passed no problem with a different professor. he never actual taught anything he would just kind of laugh to himself well writing things on the bored. He was a very nice person but he just was not a good teacher.
Would describe everything in class. When teaching makes students feel dumb for not knowing simple math off the top of their heads. Gets side tracked when teaching. Grading does not make sense. Unclear on how he grades test and quizzes. Never know what grade you have in the class unless you track it yourself.
While doing the homework I physically started crying out of anger, because the professor was so bad at teaching, everything looked like a foreign language. Grades are not posted ever, and you will have to do 150 at home homework assignments, plus Pearson HW, plus test/quiz corrections. RIP to your GPA. Do not take this class with him. I beg, DON'T!
The actual material was the easiest part of the class. The professor was horrible at explaining concepts constantly picked on students in class and do not waste your time in office hours. The only way I survived this course was hours spent on my own and working with a tutor. Best of luck!
Terrible. Never clearly explains things. Told class to work on something he put on the screen and told a couple people in my class to be quiet when they were trying to understand the material because it's distracting him during a time when he wasn't even teaching.
It was hard to follow along because he would jump around topics, lots of homework lots of the time you wouldn't know about. He laughs to himself sometimes, He sometimes expects you to know things without elaborating. If I had the choice I wouldn't take the class but he is the only professor who teaches 208
Do not recommend
His lectures are 20 minutes of subpar teaching, and the rest is him talking about random stuff he did over the weekend. You have to figure out your own grade, yet he gives no resources to actually figure out what your grade is. It really seems like he is trying to do the least amount of work while still keeping his job. Revoke his license.
This guy needs to get fired. The class is Elementary Mathmatics, yet he teaches algebra and college level math. Plus he doesn't even teach it well. This guy shouldn't be within 100 feet of a school. If EWU wants to be considered a serious university, fire him. For the love of God this guy is terrible.
This was BY FAR THE WORST teacher I have EVER had at Eastern. Extremely disappointed in his teaching(if there was any). I have never had to write one of these before but i'm warning you, WORST TEACHER EVER. don't do it, wait for the next available one.
The unfortunate 2 quarters I had with Dan were disappointing to say the least. Dan did not allow us to work with our peers. He would talk for the whole 50 minutes. No collaboration. Said things that made no sense. All of my peers were just as confused as me all quarter long. It got to the point where people would just start laughing at him. Strange
