Take him, he is the best at teaching American history
No Comments
good teacher..very thourogh..helpful but review for essays
i just wish he wasnt so picky on his test. make sure to remember ALL dates in history.
It is hard to understand what he wants from you sometimes on his test. The notes given in class aren't very specific. So to do well you must read the material and really pay close attention in class.
MUST BE ABLE TO TAKE GOOD NOTES! Not just regular good notes, REALLY good notes. I made a B in the class, and I could've tried harder,so he's not really hard. Go to every class, take extremely good notes, work on your page of notes carefully, and do fine.
ok. somewhat boring, but knowledgeable, and good encouraging classroom discussion.
very good professor, worth taking the class. He is very helpful and is always willing to listen and has an open door policy, which is really good. Take notes, show up to class and be ready to be entertained cause he likes to smile alot.
well, he's a good lecturer and you must be able to take good notes..the only thing i hated was that you have so much to do on your tests and you only have an hour to write like 3 essays and ids. but overall, hes okay.
Great teacher. Definitely knows Southern history well. Very detailed when it comes to essays on tests. Lots of books to read though (5 this semester plus a book report on a different book!) But I still enjoyed the class.
Poor communication/teaching skills. Strongly do not recommend taking his classes.
I agree with the ones above me. Take GOOD notes and show up to clase and you will get at the very least a B.
A worthwhile class. Very interesting coursework, excellent teacher.
Teacher was very unhelpful. Does not answer questions in class, only out of class. This teacher is very difficult to deal with. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
The class is interesting, clear professor, I took good notes but we had to write to essays on the exam and I found it hard to get an A on the exam even though I knew what i was doing. I still recommend him.
I like history so I did okay in the class. Teacher knows a lot of things and he likes to talk about history so I know he is a good teacher.
Some of the readings are pointless and don't really help me in writing my big final paper, but Dupre isn't a bad teacher. Definitely knows his stuff and is very helpful. Understanding if you have any problems. Good guy.
a good professor, there's a fair amount of reading, but a lot of the tests and quizes are from lectures, and his lectures are clear
The man is insane. He acts like he gives you all the information you need to make a good grade on his essay exams but the material he teaches is difficult to relate to the questions he asks. The TA's don't know what they are doing and write random comments on tests. It's a joke.
Great, enthusiastic teacher. All classes invovled long, class-participating lectures, and a few pages of over head notes. T.A.'s Paul and Keith are very tough graders. Highly recommended professor.
Do not take professor Dupre. His tests are very hard. All tests are essay questions. Also, you need to read 4 book for this class. This is insane.
DO NOT TAKE DUPRE is my next tattoo! Extremely unclear and boring, and I'm a HIST major and Southern history at that. I went to class, took notes, read the material, and still made a C. If the clutter in his office is any indication of his teaching, you'll see what I mean. Don't say I didn't warn u
Dupre is tough, but he really knows his history, and you can really learn a lot in his class. He teaches you how to think about, write, and understand history.
Very passionate about history and America, loves to teach. He does assign a lot of reading though. But if you come to class and take really good notes, you have a feel for what is important to read, and you can skim through the rest. Overall a really good teacher.
Professor Dupre ROCKS! This is the best professor I have had at UNCC. His class is easy as long as you're always there and take VERY GOOD notes. The tests are easy, but time crunched. Overall, you have to take this guy. He's GREAT!
Very good teacher loves his subject. Overall the class is easy and quizzes are too. Test can be a little hard but nothing extreme. Only gets mad when you dont do assigned reading. I would take him again easy grade.
He is a great teacher, a lot of cool reading, the test are fairly hard but he is fair, no quizzes, one paper...and he is always available to talk to about grades

GREAT class and a great teacher. Recommended.
After 75 credit hours Dr. Dupre is only the second instructor I've encountered who is both an expert in his field and a great teacher. Extremely knowledgeable in American History, especially slavery. His exams are all short answer and short essay. Papers are fairly easy. GREAT INSTRUCTOR IF YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING.
Dupre knows his stuff well.....but he is a hard professor, tests are difficult and a lot of readings
Great teacher, very informative and brought history back to life. I found all of his lectures very stimulating and interested. Lecture required alot of note taking and attendence was a must. The tests were short answer/essay. Not that difficult if you attended class and did the readings.
Amazing professor. This man knows his stuff! His lectures are interesting and the tests are pretty easy if you do the readings and take good notes. Three exams and a short paper. For a history lover, its a really easy A.
Studied for hours. Took lots of notes. Attended all classes. Did all readings. The man grades too hard, and is too picky on what he wants. You can write your heart out on exams, and he'll find a way to make what you said "a little bit wrong." Should have an A, probably getting a B.
Dupre is an awesome teacher. Lectures are very interesting, a lot less reading than other history classes. Write down as much as you can from class for studying. Although time is a problem for tests, he gives the essay question before hand so you can prepare. I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot. I would definitely take him again.
Go to class, pay attention, take notes, read, study and you'll be fine. Sometimes lectures can get a bit boring, but hey, it's history. I highly recommend Dupre!
This is my second semester taking Dupre. He is a great professor. Sometimes the lectures and discussions can get a bit boring though. Make sure you take detailed notes and DO THE READINGS! He is definetly a professor you want to take.
Not a big fan of Dupre's but I'll admit he knows his stuff. Very critical on the papers and can come off as kind of prickish at times. Definitely do the readings or you will be doomed! All in all, it wasn't the most fun class I've had, but it was okay.
this man is hte hardest grader I have ever had!! Attend class..don't take the 8am like I did!
Dupre has not been my favorite professor at UNCC, but he's not the worst. Very strict grader! VERY!! Lots of detail needed to get a good grade. Expect to do very poorly on your first exam. Class is all lecture. Boring at times but intresting if you like history. Not too much reading. Avoid 8am if you can. Do not miss a class or you will be screwed.
My favorite prof at UNCC. I've taken him 3 times and have signed up for a class of his next semester is well. He's super intelligent, really nice guy, and he's not as hard of a grader as the Hist 1160 people want you to believe. Come to class and do the readings and its a pretty easy A or B.
I had him for his American Lives class. Interesting class, but lectures can be awful. Very hard not to fall asleep. Expects you to particpate. A lot to read, but not too difficult. Hard grader too. Best to take if you are actually interested in History or have to take this course, otherwise you might want to look elsewhere.
He is the department head of the history department so obviously he is really smart. He is very interested in the topics that he teaches and he is very fair in grading. He will help you if you have trouble (I even cried in his class once and he let me redo my paper!)
Dr. Dupre is one of the best professors this university has to offer. His classes are interesting and he's very personable and helpful. There is a lot of reading, and he does take attendance seriously, but why pay the tuition if you're not going to go to class.
He is a very good professor, likes to answer questions. he does give a lot of reading, this semester i had to read two books and a lot of articals. make sure your read those and you are fine. and you must attend class.
Dupre is an awesome professor. He knows how to teach the material in a very interesting way. If you go to class and take notes, you'll be absolutely fine.
He is a real good teacher. You must read the booke b/c he gives quizes on the readings. Test are reasonable. He loves to talk. Gives great detail on events.
He is a very nice guy but a very hard grader. Expect to do AWFUL on your first exam. He tries to prove a point by giving everyone bad grades. Not an easy class. He tries to help you all he can if you make and effort to go and see him.
All the exams are essay based and he grades very strictly. I don't' know how he got all these good reviews, worst professor I have had to date. Conferences with him are useless, he only tells you what you already know. Do not take this teacher.
This professor expects students to act like adults. If you want to learn and participate AND develop your academic skills/potential then he is just great. If you want to idle, check your FB, text, and want him to entertain you in class then you should still be in High School. If you seriously want to be at college and benefit then he is awesome.
GREAT teacher. Not necessarly easy, but he's awesome. Had him for Am His I. Exams are all essay. Makes taking notes easy but you HAVE TO GO to class and PAY ATTENTION. Uses class discussions a lot, which I liked. Pop quizes based on readings. Go to class, pay attention, and get an A. Don't text in class or he'll call you out. Really nice guy though
When I registered for this class, well it was my favorite period in American History. Now, after taking that class, I have lost a bit of love for it. I went to class everyday, read everything, and participated in discussions. I got a C, I couldn't believe that my high B got reduced to a C. He is an incredibly hard grader.
Mr. Dupre is one of the best professors I have had to date. His classes are easy, as long as you show up, take thorough notes, and do the assigned readings. He is very friendly and encouraging towards his students.
Dr Dupre is a great teacher for the first US history class. He grades very tough, BUT he gives study guides for his exam questions and tells you what to study (minus IDs). He is very nice, and he put the book we read in the library so you could read it without buying it! Loved his class! Attendance is mandatory, but you can miss 5 classes.
He wants his students to do well, and always asks if we have any questions. He givs study guides for exams.
Dr.Dupre is one of a few professors not participating in EXCESSIVE GRADE INFLATION at UNCC.For that I give the man a COMMENDATION.You have to EARN an "A" here. Really brought out good topics, thought provoking, maybe as an older student I appreciated it more and not the "everyone gets an A, no matter what they hand in." Solid professor. US HISTORY
He is very mono-toned so if you take his class in the morning you will probably fall asleep, he teaches really good topics, however he expects you to know more than what he tought for his tests. He grades really tough, this class was harder than most 3000 level courses I have taken.
Very difficult course for a 1000 level class... However, Dr. Dupre was interesting and helpful when needed. His grading is very tough, but with extra credit offered, it's possible to have a high grade.
He is very specific on what's expected of you and you do have to take very detailed notes to do well on the test. However, if you read the required books and study enough it's an easy pass of a B or higher. Note: don't just write down names and dates - write down why stuff was important (that's what he tests on)
He is the best history teacher at UNCC, hands down. If you like history, you will love this class!!! Take good, detailed notes on what he is lecturing. Tests are essay based - no multiple choice but he is not a hard grader.
Great guy, lectures aren't too boring. He likes the class to be involved and makes it comfortable to do so. I would DEFINITELY recommend him. One of the better History Professors I've had in my 3 years here.
Great professor and a great guy. Literally have nothing bad to say about him or his class. If you put in the effort you should have no problem with him.
Much tougher grader than most I've encountered as a history major. Offers free points with things like reading journals, but makes you earn every point on tests. Didn't read? No chance of a good test grade without details from readings. Great lecturer and highly knowledgeable. Take if the subject matter will interest you enough to do the readings.
Dupre is a great professor and very willing to help. He does not give many A's when grading tests, but if you make an effort to attend class, meet with him and do extra credit he will hep you out.
If youre a history major, take him. I loved his class. His lectures were always interesting and he likes class participation. Gives pop quizzes on readings so make sure you read what he assigns. He also gives study guides for exams. Exams are written response, not multiple choice so study well. Overall, awesome teacher.
This class was kind of boring, all he did was lecture. He doesn't allow technology at all in his class and all his notes are on paper not online. The test are essay test and they can be hard, but he gives a study guide.
Professor Dupre actually wants students to learn and does his best to make sure students have a good understanding of the lessons. Meet with him during office hours for help. Had 5 pop quizzes throughout the semester but they were easy as long as you read the assigned readings. Allows 5 absences. One of my favorite teachers at Charlotte
You read the book, take notes in the discussion and write a paper 3-5 times. As long as you take good notes and write down his answers to questions and use them to boost your own writing you will be fine. I got 3 A's 2 C's and averaged out to an overall B. He's understanding with attendance if something happens to you or you need an exception.
You can know all of your material on a test and show it, and still make a C. His lectures are boring, all over the place, and he tends to go on tangents about the smallest of details for 30 minutes. He's nice enough, but a professor I would absolutely never recommend.
One of the only real professors at uncc who actually know how to teach a subject. Everything he says you should write down and use to your advantage for an A. 5 pop quizzes on easy readings 1-20 pages that are actually interesting and relevant.
I took American Lives with Dupre. He is a great professor. The lectures are interesting and have everything you need to know for tests. Amount of reading was not horrible. Participate and go to class!
Absolutely do NOT take this class. All lectures are mono toned and boring as can be, gets off on rants about specific topics for 30 minutes. Terrible hearing so expect to frequently be asked to repeat yourself and speak up. Had to buy 6 textbooks for 1 semester. Impossible to please on paper or written exams.
Due to the virus, things weren't as smooth as they have been in years past I'm sure. However, Dr. Dupre did his best to ensure student success and made sure to take the fact that we are now in an online class rather than in person. 4000 historiography is tough so make sure you pick a topic you care about!!!
I loved this class. Dr. Dupre assigned very interesting readings, gave great feedback on assignments, and quickly responded to emails. Class discussions on the readings were also interesting and thought-provoking. I highly recommend this class. If you participate in discussions and apply his feedback to improve your writing, youll do well.
Horrible teacher please don't take this class unless you want to read like 5 articles a night and do essay tests that he randomly gives you a horrible grade.
Such a nice prof, ready your weekly reading he gives pop quiz on them. on thanksgiving, he gave everyone 100 for the quiz. simple and easy prof.
I quite like Dr. Dupre, he has interesting lectures and readings. However, he got really angry with us for not reading a book in a week during a heavy exam period. Beyond that, I like him.
The class is lecture heavy, these lectures are kinda boring and it feels like youre shamed for not alreading knowing historical topics weve never learned. Class participation is really big. Weekly readings that he will assign sometimes at 5pm and its due the next day at 10am. Essay tests that are graded more citical then most english teachers.
super critical, dont take his class
Don't do it. Takes participation seriously, understanding the readings are important, in-class pop quizzes are considered "quick and short (lies)." Definitely contradicts himself when grading. Says he wants a short essay that is straight to the point (of course) but you get your paper back and says you don't have enough information?? Yeah, no.
This is the first time I have written one of these for a professor. And I highly recommend him for HIST-4000. He gives clear and concise feedback. He will also work with you in order for you to pass or succeed in your field of study. Just communicate with him, because he will communicate with you :)
Dr. Dupre is a good professor, and I enjoyed this class. He is a tough grader but is very clear with his feedback and offers a lot of office hours and opportunities to get help. I also appreciated his meetings throughout the semester to make sure nobody fell behind. A difficult grader but a great professor and a nice person.
He was hard to pay attention to, very boring. almost everyone I know had a d.
Professor Dupre was one of my favorites! Great lectures, make sure to take lots of notes. Pop quizzes are usually on documents that he assigned to read before. He let us bring a flashcard with notes for the exams, which was really helpful. Be ready to write papers and read long documents. Overall, great professor and course.
Dr. Dupre gave me hope in history again after having a terrible and harsh professor the semester before. He's extremely smart, he's super friendly, and makes an effort to get to know his students. He's easy to talk to and never makes you feel embarrassed for asking even the most simple questions in meetings with him. Attendance is key though!
Professor Dupre was very nice and knowledgeable. He only teaches through lectures and class discussions, so taking notes and participating will help you do good. Grades on 6 pop quizzes that he bases off readings he gives you, 3 exams, and a final paper. Attendance is required but overall great class and great professor.
Dr. Dupre is super respectful and always willing to help his students when they are stuck and confused about something. He does require a bit of writing but it should not be an issue if you get it done on time. Other than that, he's a good professor.
His class was honestly pretty easy. There is a lot of reading, but that's expected in a history course. Make sure you pay attention and take good notes because the only assignments are exams, but they're relatively easy.
Dr. Dupre is a very kind professor; he is approachable and is willing to explain things from the lecture. Lectures are not the most interesting, but he does make an effort for students to participate. The assignments in this class are all writing, and he is a tough grader. If you are like me and aren't the best at writing, good luck in this course.
