Dan is a brilliant man, who sometimes can go over students heads. While his classes are difficult, students will come away with a greater understanding of how the world really works.

He was a great teacher, i learned a lot, very easy to talk to
When I asked him how to improve my right up, he told me to try and please the entire field of oral interpretation, and that was it. Excuse me but what the hell does that mean? I could teach that class better blind and mute.
I think he is a few sandwiches short of a picnic! Didn't grade anything except the final exam after telling us attendance and our project were included in our grade. Thanks for wasting our time! Hard to learn ANYTHING!
Best teacher in the world

knows what he's talking about, you don't have to memorize things, but you do have to recite poems and things.
He was a good teacher, easy class...just go to class and make sure you do your work...and suck up!!!
Really odd guy.. very odd
Awesome professor, listen to him and he'll change how you learn and complete assingments and projects for the rest of your life.
talks in riddles.
I had this professor for Oral Interp. He spoke quite candidly about issues concerning students, and I found that the most apathetic students hated him most. An easy class with minimal effort, and students that hated him were those that hated everything.
He loves himself, and nobody else. He doesn't know how to fill classtime and fills it with stories about himself. If you took theater in HS you learned more there than you ever will with Eastman. WORTHLESS.
Very smart man but also lets you know it. Grades easy and can be a nice guy. I learned alot in his photo class. Huge on participation and makes every one talk every class numerous times. Not my style of class.
He's an ass. Doesnt care about students...class is easy, but if you want to take Oral Interp take it with Fucillo.
Very smart guy and very self-centered. He wants to help you out but I never understood what he was trying to say. As long as you try though you will get a good grade.
Jerk the first week or so (maybe to scary students away) and then nice the rest of the year. Rude, but nice. The guy cuts students off more than any professor I've had. He's an easy grader and somewhat interesting, but he knows he's intelligent.
he is the worst prof that i have ever had...very unclear...not helpful...rambles on...gets off topic ALL the time...bad teacher....never take is classes if it can be avoided!!
he is a very wise old man. i am the kind of person that likes it when a professor or coach cracks down on me because it shows they see you have some talent. trust what he says and just do it. you may look a little foolish but it's so helpful. really liste
one of the worst courses i have taken at WSU; makes class go to end of period even if he has nothing to say; grades horrible- tests worth 10 points and you write 3 pages to complete it. class has almost nothing to do with photography- DON'T TAKE IT!!!
Go into looking to learn, and put alot of time in, and you will be satisfied. He is brilliant, at times my brain was oversaturated, but I got alot from the class.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He makes the class run to the end of the period, talking about nonsense. Don't take this course if you are looking to learn about photography.
He is very confusing. If you ask a question his answer will make no sense and have nothing to do with your question. Not a fun class. I don't recomrnd this class.
This is one of those professors who really makes you think. As long as you put effort into it, you will do just fine. And to all of you who say that he isnt helpful, that's a load of BS! you just didnt try and probably shouldnt be in college. It's hard at first but when you get it, its awesome
This prof. makes no sense whatsoever! Even thought I recieved an A I really have no idea what I learned? If you want to look into photo this is NOT a class to take!
This class was easy! Just show up, pay attention and you can easily BS your way through the tests. He never really gave homework...except the photo projects which were fun...yes he is kinda boring..but he is a very nice guy, just be patient with him..you'll end up being happy that you took the class
this guy is the worst professor i have ever had! all we would ever do is go around the room and ask questions from the book, he doesn't lecture or teach you anything... you could read the book and never go to class which is good, but his grading is strict and he is justBORING!!!!!
Great Class, learned alot. Granted he does use big words...and I know its hard for some of you to understand...and he does give you a lot of info to digest. but overall, his classes are intersting...only half the time do we go to the end of the period...I will never look at a photo the same
This guy is on something...After this semester started I dreaded going to this class. You can not do the reading and be fine...however if you don't go to class he will hold that over you. He holds you to the very last min even tho he has nothing to say and doesn't answer ??s. Class sucked overall.
He's a nice guy, but not very helpful, accessible, or understanding. I had to drop the class because I missed a big test for a pretty valid reason and he wouldn't let me make it up. I was getting a 97% before that. It's too bad.
Uses language far beyond class' understanding. Not overly helpful; however, I failed his first test miserabley, did not understand a thing of what he wanted, but I still managed an A by the end of the course. He is interesting to listen to if you can understand him. It was a fun class that sparked my decision to enter the feild of graphic arts.
He talks with graduate level language that makes no sense and has a strong opinion about everything and will let you know it. His readings are rediculous and hard to understand. He yelled at my class for the entire hour and a half about how we were not cognitively or intellectually intelligent. I thought this class would be fun- it's not.
He's a good professor who can be unclear at times but he does make the student learn something new every day.
i don't know what to say... he takes my breath away
Nice Guy! Likes to talk
You can learn a lot if you can get passed his ego. He thinks he is the almighty knowledge god. He makes his students feel like unintelligent worthless beings. He has mocked a few of the students in the class. He likes to answer questions before the entire question has been asked, usually resulting in an insufficient answer. Two words "god complex."

hilarious
One of the smartest most intelligent professors I've ever had.He does have a bit of an ego, but you will learn a lot in his class. He talks a lot harder than he is.I was afraid that he was going to give me bad grades on everything by the way he talked, and I ended up with an A in the class. Just show up to class and do what he says, you'll do fine.
he is very intelligent and i have learned so much in his class. he likes students to ask questions, so be prepared to participate. also be prepared to think critically. hes an easy grader.
I dont' like this guy at all. Loser. All that comes out of his mouth is "make sense". He talks down his students and makes it clear that they will never be as good as him in photography and/or art. He actually makes you answer questions on the test that says he is smarter than you and that you are uneducated. I would skip taking this guy/class.
Take him if you want to fail. Book smart not common sense smart. Too bad nobody else teaches this class. Goes off course and isn't helpful at all. Doesn't like ramblers.
I was looking forward to taking this class and learning something about photography. This isn’t the class for that. Instead he rambles on about romanticism and world views, the link back to photography is extremely weak. I wouldn’t waste my time with this class if taught by this guy.
This class is VERY intimidating the first few weeks. He scares the crap out of his class to weed out the people that won't try as hard as he expects. He gives quizzes every tuesday and graded pretty hard at the beginning. The class got more relaxed towards the end. He was an awesome teacher and I enjoyed going once it became more relaxed.
He weeds out the people who aren't ready to try and learn in the class by being intimidating, but if you stay with him you'll learn to like him, he eases up on everyone. He has random ways of grading but most are completely easy, the photography aspect doesnt seem too big of a deal just as long you do it.
He's literally a bad professor. If you want to learn photography, you're better off on your own. Test are easy, I got a B because I was so lazy to go to his 8am class that I missed a couple of assignments, other than that, I should have gotten an easy A, but he's so bad that I didn't feel to get out of bed for that class.
Extremely arrogant, class might as well be called "Why Daniel Eastman is the best 101." He will always be better than you in everything. He doesn't explain anything clearly causing you to incorrectly complete assignments which he will then criticise you on.. That is, if he's even in the classroom. They must let anyone become a professor these days.
He seems brilliant, I really liked him in photography. Third week of class he told everyone that if you want a B in the class, to give him your name and you can leave and never come back... They all got B's! I stayed and class was a breeze.
He is very arrogant. We started class and went over material very quickly. Super confusing! We all failed the first exam, so he dropped it and for the rest of the semester we are working on projects in class. Attendance is mandatory!! He is helpful in his comments. Impossible to know what he wants or is expecting of you as a student.
This guy is by far the smartest guy I have talked to. He makes you realize so many new things that many people do not even know. He does want to teach people that want to learn and the class is not a drawing class, it is a humanity course of reading and learning what art is. Just stay in the class and try to listen you will do well.
He completely changed the syllabus halfway through the class and made attendance mandatory and we no longer needed the textbooks that we bought. We took a test that he didn't grade and he told us that we all did horrible on. He's really arrogant but he's also really smart. Extremely hard to understand sometimes, he talks in circles.
He is very confusing with what he wants you to do, but if you ask him questions he pretty much gives you the answer. At first attendance wasn't mandatory..then all of a sudden we only had 2 huge projects to do and we could only miss 3 classes. You can bs your way through the class..but he's a little arrogant.
This guy is literally the worst Professor at Winona State. He talks in circles so that you cannot understand what he is saying or means. He is rude and arrogant for no real reason at all. He should have been fired a long time ago and I would recommend NEVER taking any sort of class with him, he makes it sound way harder than it is.
Eastman is a masters quality prof, teaching undergrad classes. You get as much out of his class as YOU want, don't take him personally. He lectures a lot, and you will learn many things if you show up and listen. He teaches lots of theory kids, get over it and go to class. He'll help you as much as you ask quality questions. I'll take him again.
Dan Eastman is rude, arrogant, and thinks he is the best thing walking on this earth. He has you take this ridiculous midterm, and doesn't even grade it, if you make it that far in the class you automatically get a B. He says if you keep coming and do well on the final, you get an A. I got a B in the class because I couldn't handle it anymore.
Didn't like this class at all. I thought it would be fun because I like taking pictures. He doesn't explain anything, just expects you to know what to do. First test was super hard, everyone failed so he curved it. Had 2 projects which took a long time. He also gets off subject a lot
I love photography but this class was HORRIBLE! He rambles on and on, never directly answers questions, & treats everyone like they're worthless, stupid people. He says he assumes you know all the material if you don't ask q's but gets mad when you ask a q & never answers it. DO NOT take his class.
First test was brutal, everyone bombed it. The project instructions were a little unclear, but it wasn't too hard. He likes to talk a lot, mainly about himself. Nothing was explained clearly in class, definitions and concepts were different every time he gave them.
Just don't take this class...save yourself a headache. He rambles, expectations never clear, little structure for overall class. His ego is huge & you can tell in the way he treats other people. I went to him for some pointers on the final project & he was so condescending about the fact I didn't know exactly what to do already, no help. AVOID.
Do not take him! Dan is so full of himself. He's an arrogant, self centered person. He's very negative towards all students. Never gives a straight answer to any question. Talks very philosphical trying to make himself look better. I can't believe that he is still a professor. You get nothing out of his class. Avoid him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Dan is very self-centered. Thinks he is Buddha or something. Did not learn anything from the class relevant to photography. Worked very hard to understand the guy yet received a lower grade than some of the people that never showed up for class. Must just give out random grades. Waste of a college credits!!!!!!!!!
TERRIBLE!!!!Waste of college credits and money. Didn't learn anything.
Probably best to avoid taking Dan if you actually want to learn something. Take a different class to fufill the credit.
.....no
Please don't take! I was interested and actually liked photography before taking this class. He made the semester terrible. Our whole grade consisted of two things: half was a portfolio of photos/metaphors we put together during the semester, and the other half was the final. No study guide, and he didn't really go over any the chapters with us.
Do NOT take this class with Eastman. If you are interested in this, take it with Grier. Eastman talks on and on about basically nothing. Nothing makes sense and he can never answer anything clearly. He says one thing, then completely contradicts it. We are ONLY graded on TWO things: a portfolio of pictures he'll probably hate, and one test...
This professor is confusing, egotistical, and sometimes plain rude. He made multiple people cry or storm out of the classroom with his comments. I thought I was doing well in the class but then I get one of my two grades back and its lower than the people who did nothing at all. I put a lot of work into my projects and it was all a waste of time.
Prof. Eastman is hard to understand. His lectures seem clear during class, but when you look back on your notes, they're hard to understand. Class isn't manditory, but i highly recommend going. No assignments, just one project (48% of final grade) and a final (52% of final grade). Is very wise, but doesn't explain everything clearly.
Prof. Eastman is a nice guy with a huge brain. Sometimes it hard to follow where he is going. WHOLE grade based on a project and final exam. Got a B in the class and that was luck. DO NOT take if possible.
All this class is is reading the textbook and asking questions. You have to go to class. And he makes you ask questions. I didn't really like the teaching style, but looking back I feel like I learned a lot. No final test, we just had to write a paper basically on what we've learned.
I have had this class for 2 days now, and NONE of us know whats going on, when class was over we all walked out and looked at each other, and all asked "soooo what did he say/ talk about) He is very quiet, and hard to understand. He likes when you ask questions, even if they have nothing to do with the class. its going to be a long semester!
Eastman is complicated. He is pretty much too smart for his job here at WSU.He is confusing with his instructions on the tests but if you show him you work hard you'll do well. I got an A both first tests which were written outside of class. You are only graded on 4 tests. no participation points or attendance but can only miss 2 classes
Prof. Eastman likes you to engage. If you are willing to put in the effort that college classes require then you will do just fine!I have had many classes with him and wouldn`t keep taking them if he was as impossible as most of these reviews make him sound.
Eastman is the smartest professors at WSU. He keeps me engaged and interested every class. He likes to talk a lot but pay attention to everything and you will learn a lot more than just class content, he teaches you about life. His favorite phrase that will stick with me forever is, "YOU NEED TO KNOW ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW."
Started off hating this class, but the more I stuck with it, the more I learned about myself. Class is very hard if you don't read (textbook use is HIGH) but Eastman basically teaches you how to improve your study habits into your career. That said, all you do during class is ask him questions and he'll just tell you to read more. C was automatic.
I started out completely hating the class. However, once I participated more I ended up learning a lot. Prof. Eastman may seem rude to begin with, but once you get to know him he is actually a really nice person and wonderful teacher.
He IS brilliant. Did you know horses weight 2.5 tons and Babe Ruth struck out 500 times per season ?
Professor Eastman is very smart, but a terrible teacher! He spends the entire lesson talking about pointless stuff. He often repreats himself, and if you ask a question he talks over you. Graded on a BS paper and a final project. He comes across as very condessending and rude. My frined got a C and she put twice as much work as I did. DO NOT TAKE!!
The worst. Had to drop class because he will tear apart your character and tell you how you will never amount to anything if your paper isn't the best thing he's ever read. Rude and unnecessarily harsh. Do not take.
I had him twice in one semester and it was hell, but at least it's over. -Repeats himself a lot. -Laugh at his stupid "jokes." -NO ONE fails, even when he gives you the option to leave with a guaranteed C. -Get on his good side right away. If he likes your class as a whole, your grade will probably be better. -Just show up and have something to say
Took this as a general hoping for an easy class, IT WAS NOT. He Teaches in the stupidest way, never has any material prepared to teach, goes off of questions from the textbook, then rambles and talks about completely irrelevant things from the text. Then gets angry when nobody does well on the test. Doesn't provide materials to help you study.
Terrible. This guy is a joke. He doesn't actually teach you anything about the material in lecture, he just sits up front and makes everybody ask questions about the reading whether or not they have one and then tears you a new one if you ask a dumb question. Interrupt your questions and goes off on a tangent about something completely different.
You will not learn anything and your grade will be low
I withdrew from this class not because I hated it, but because I had to much on my plate. Yes Eastman can be mean. But if you don't have thick skin you shouldn't take a class with him. He is so freaking brilliant, I'm actually really bummed about not being in his class anymore. You WILL learn a lot, just be sure to participate.
Have you ever heard about the kind of people who are just too smart to teach? This is Eastman. He is BRILLIANT. But, his lectures go way over my head. Tests are hard. But go see him outside of class and just have a conversation with him. He's so smart, and is very interesting to talk to. You can find him wandering around campus. Cool guy.
As someone else said, this guy is so smart that he doesn't teach effectively. On top of that, he makes a lot of snarky, condescending comments about people right to their faces. He is also very rude. I have pretty thick skin so he didn't bother me much, but regardless, there is no reason for him to be so rude. Avoid him if at all possible.
Eastman isn't as bad as people make him out to be. He is very knowledgable and loves to talk. He can come off as a bit intimidating, but he means well. The first month of class will drive you crazy, because he is very specific on how he wants assignments done. But once you get it, you're good. People who didn't drop the class, got an A.
He has a very different teaching style. You have to ask questions, and if you don't have any, then you better come up with one cause he is going to force you. Every day. He doesn't believe is online grading, so you never really know what you're being graded on and how you are doing.
Eastman is one crazy dude but once you get over the fact that this man is a genius and you're not, the class will be fine. He makes you asks questions but once you get to know him, he's super cool and has lived an incredible life. P.S. ask about his goats.
Terrible. Never says anything of any importance or teaches anything in a straight up manner, just goes off on subjects that make no sense and expects you to understand. Also he acts very pretentious all the time and is very condescending.
Eastman is awful. He tries to be funny but he can be very rude. You will sit through pointless "lectures" that have nothing to do with the test. You are graded on TWO things. Your midterm and final. If you want to pass this class you will need to read the book religiously. Too much effort for a general class. TAKE A DIFFERENT COURSE.
Eastman is lowkey a bro. I'd say he's a better life coach than professor. He is easily the smartest guy I've ever met and makes it known (but it's funny to listen to Idrc). He gets you to think outside of the box, and really teaches you a lot (whether it's relevant or not). Study for the midterm and final, only two grades in the class.
Ive never been more frustrated with a teacher, lets clear that up. But if you desire a challenge, a new and insightful way of to learn, take his class. Hes quirky, maybe a little aggressive, some would say senile. But he demands you to rely on your own intuition, and what once felt entirely impossible begins to click. Hes truly a character.
Dr. Eastman can be super confusing sometimes, but if you trust in the "process" and try your hardest, you'll end up with an A. He teaches you how to critically think, and honestly I thought his class was going to be pointless, but took a lot away from it. Would take again.
Ive had many professors like him. Hes clearly a genius in his field, so take everything he says and apply it. Get on his good side and do your projects well. Always think about your next question as, youre only as good as your next question.
Eastman is a total frickin genius in his field, & he knows it. May come off harsh during class, but only because he takes zero BS from students and knows everything about what he's teaching. Attendance not mandatory, but only bc he's betting on you not coming - you will miss EVERYTHING you need to know for next class period, I promise lol
I personally liked Eastman, even though many people don't. He is very confusing as to what he wants in your photos but if you just talk to him and ask him for help then he will give you his honest opinions. Make friends in this class because then you can decipher what he wants better. He comes off as very intimidating and scary but it wears off.
He's very interesting, but I actually hate this class. I thought that it would be fun but it is not. He wants you to ask questions but the guy does not answer your question. I don't know if he's hearing it wrong or what, but I get irritated by this. He also has goats and that is the only plus to this class. He will make you participate!!
Show up to every class. Sometimes difficult to decipher what he wants for each photograph. Very willing to talk through things so make sure to ask questions when you are confused! He won't answer them directly because he wants you to think, but he definitely helps you find the answer yourself. In the end he cares most about the effort you put forth
Dan's gone senile. He rambles about things completely unrelated to the subject ten minutes into class, like his goats, and doesn't give constructive feedback. You don't have to take pictures if you don't want to, there's no tests, quizzes, or anything like that. Not a good class if you actually want to learn about photography, good for an easy A.
I'm not lying when I say that I'm pretty sure that Eastman is an actual intellectual. He really dives deep into concepts and wants students to really think. This class completely objects to the idea of "right answer" and goes more towards "how you can improve." I always enjoyed the class.
Dude is insane but, if you actually listen to what he says, it's usually pretty smart. There isn't a lot of work to do in this class (show up every class, you'll probably get an A). Key is listening, he will force you to ask questions, it's way easier if you actually know what you're talking about. Highly recommend taking 400 with him than others.
He is probably the most arrogant professor I have ever taken, that said I could tell he knew his field and I enjoyed his class. When I took it the class was 100% based on class attendance and nothing else. He was very confusing when giving directions for photo taking but it would all make sense at the next class. Would take him again
Professor Eastman is unlike any professor at Winona State University -- in the best way. He is a real-life intellectual. His goal is to spur creativity, he will be vague in his answers because he wants to challenge you to think. Some may be frustrated by his teaching style, but it helps, trust me. Do the work, and you will receive a good grade.
Eastman is not clear on grading criteria and not very helpful. Halfway through the semester he started to expect different things for the same types of assignments and didn't tell us until after we turned it in. I emailed him numerous times and never got a straight answer on what to do. Very irritating. I would not recommend him to another student.
