I took him for a distant learning class and he and his evil little assistant had a bad attitude about the class even before all of the students arrived. He is hard and grades even harder but the tests are by the book.
Very imformative, very clear when he speaks and always likes to have a good attitude about things. It's not an easy instructor however, but if you study hard the class shouldnt be a problem. Do not get discouraged at your first grades.
I didn't like him the test were 100 questions and most of the stuff covered in the class wasn't even in the test. he made us study about 10 chapters for each test. he was a good speaker but nothing he said was on the test.
He makes history into a story, and he makes it not boring at all. But you really have to read the book...if you do that and are good at writing papers this class it great.
If you want a headache sign up for this class
Explains things well if you go to class every day. Willing to give extra credit, doesn't like when you don't read or show up.(deducts points) 90% of test comes from the book so just read. He is interesting and not hard as long as you study and show up.

I had distance learning. The quizzes were a piece of cake, even though he grades as if this was an english class. The tests were way too hard and nothing in his little study guide was on the tests. More of a headache than anything.
He teaches what is in the text and also has stories on the side. Good teacher and good educator. Not easy, but informative,
Must read the book and by the way stay out of his assistants way.
He is a hard grader on papers. His classes are long and feel it. He talks and talks and talks. He made me want to fall asleep!!
I dont think he was a bad teacher i just think he needs to make study guides or something for his tests. There is to much material to have to remember for one test. Other than that i dont think he is bad.
He is really passionate about history, but he is condescending, and always acted like he was talking to a roomful of idiots. The tests cover 8-10 chapters each and he grades his papers harder than any English teacher would. I tried really hard to like him
he is helpful and informative. just dont be late to class. he give alot of extra cretit for the test. most of the tests come from the book but he said next year he was changing his test to essay test. his multi guess test were hard.
very good teacher, great stories, but he's doing essay tests from now on, instead of multiple choice. all you have to do is read the book and follow lecture and you'll get an A. papers are hard but clear them through him first and youll get A's.
Mr Gilmartin is a great teacher. His class is challenging but set up in such a way as to make it easy for every student to be successful.
I thought he was jerk. I had him distance learning, and he acted like helping you was a waste of his time. Takes on more students than he can handle, then gets snotty with you when your papers not back to you on time. Wouldn't recomend him for online clas
Fabulous. I can't recommend him highly enough. The tests are essay, but straight from the class lectures. Online quizes are straight from the book. Pay attention, participate in class and you will learn a lot as well as get the A you've earned.
He is the most rude professor I've ever had. I cannot stand him, and I would certainly never take another one of his classes.
Excellent!!!!!!!!!!I have to say he is very straightfoward. He test only on lectures. His clases are very entertaining. I would highly recommend Mr. Gilmartin. Excellent professor!!!!!!!!

great teacher harder than most but this isn't supposed to be easy and to quote him "This isn't high school anymore."

He is one of the best teachers I've ever had. If you want to take this class prepare to learn-which is what he's there for. The only reason why you would think he is rude is if you ask a stupid question that he's already explained. He is very helpful if you have good questions and have read material
Wonderful teacher! I was never into History until I took this class. His lectures never failed to keep my attention. He can be a little "assertive," but I think it's pretty funny! Do your readings/note-taking and you will ace his class.
I agree with this comment, poor teacher! I thought he was jerk. I had him distance learning, and he acted as if helping you was a waste of his time. Takes on more students than he can handle, then gets snotty with you when your papers not back to you on time. Wouldn't recommend him for online class.
Excellent teacher!! Keeps his class interesting. Keep up with the reading, quizzes, take good notes, and really listen. It is amazing what you will learn about our country's history. I am so glad that I took his class...you should take it too!!!
It's hard work but he makes history into a story and easy to understand. I liked his teaching style. He teaches understanding of our country not just the events.
Excellent teacher. I have a whole new appreciation of history because of his class. He loves history and wants you to know the story. Don't be late to class, come to learn, and you'll do well. Great lectures and funny too. Fair.
Professor Gilmartin is one of the smartest people i have ever met. He loves to teach history and will teach you what really happened. if you like history take his class it is amazing. His class is not hard at all as long as you listen it is easy. He also takes history and makes it funny and easy.
Definitely a hard ass but that makes him hilarious. Probably not good to take DL, given that his emails may come off rude - very different in person and even more when spoken to after class. Extremely intelligent with a broad base of knowledge. Class is challenging but worth the $$$$.
Excellent instructor! Had him DL, his instructions were very clear and concise. One of the easiest DL classes I have taken. History is a boring subject (sorry), but it wasn't too bad with this instructor. I'd take him again for another course.
I took his video class and it was well worth it. All you need to do is read the materials and do the work. Always sent reminders when things were do. Great communication, great teacher. I would take him again, but I am done with my Histories. Thank goodness, PEACE AND BLESSINGS!
He's great. He is a real college professor. Super witty and funny. He makes you work but it's worth it.
He's a wonderful teacher.
His method of teaching doesn't match my way of learning. Those stupid quizes he makes us take online are difficult and his essay tests are too vague! He does try to making History into a story, which makes it interesting, but sometimes he forgets about a portion and confuses everyone.
He was just a jerk who didnt seem to care about anything. He would never answer a question and was so mean if you asked one. He should have just taught a class online bc he never did anything in class. He always through in his opinion which he shouldnt do and he acted like he was so cool which he was not. He was very boring and his grading was terrible. He never listened to anyone if they tried to explain anything to him.He is one of those teachers who are comfortable with their tenure. He should be fired.
Definitely a hard ass! Not forgiving at all! Requires a lot of work and time. Thinks that your life revolves around his class. You better know how to use webct. Would never recomend him to anyone!
Ok guy after you get into the class. HE IS HARD -and gets off track in discussions. WEB CT Tests are HARD! Would not recommend if you don't want to work hard.
I was not interested in history until this class. This guy is great. Funny, interesting stories, there is nothing boring about his class. People who think he is hard probably don't want to go to class anyway. He is totally passionate about history, and wants to share it. He assigns interesting articles. Great lectures, and he's up front and clear
This professor is great! HE knows his history and can teach it.
I loved this teacher. he knows history and lectures are very interesting and funny. Yes you do have to read a lot, write essays and two essay tests, but if you read the chapter all of it is easy. The people who say he's hard most not like to learn anyway. I would take this teacher again in a heart beat.
Took this class online - as long as you read the chapters it is extremely easy. I'm glad I took it online, the few comments from the professor via email and bulletin board made him seem sarcastic and rude.
Took Online. He is a jerk in his communications. He sets a due date and then takes off points for not turing in your work close to the due date. If you want an easy grade this is the class but you have to put up with a dimwitted teacher.
I took it online. Very clear, logical and not really that hard. The articles he chose for us to write on were very interesting. He is direct and to the point. Maybe some people don't like that. I thought he was very good, and I learned more than I thought I would.
He is the best professor I've had ever. Interesting, funny and loves history. You work but he works too. Great class.
great teachure, I got an A. I a first was worried, but realise that it was not that hard as long as you spend time doing what you sould be doing.
Really hard class but he can be very helpful. Kind of a smart ass though and has a habit of making you feel like crap right in front of the whole class!
He knows his history, but his classes are HARD, and I mean VERY HARD. Comes off as rude and a smart ass at first, he's not so bad as the semester goes.
Overall a good professor. He gave a lot of background info to explain history. There is a lot of work but if you do it, you can easily get an A. You had to be in class every day and check the website twice a week. There were up to 3 major papers and in-class tests, but also plenty of chances for extra credit. I plan to take him for AMH 2020.
Very, Very interesting and funny too. He is direct and to the point about assignments and all of that. I didn't much like history, but he shows you that it is just a great story. I was amazed.
There is a quite a bit of work for this class. However, his lectures are interesting, intelligent and animated. I really ejoyed the class.
He made me enjoy history when I hated it before. He knows his stuff and he can be a smart ass and opinionated but it livens up the class. He tells you what's opinion and whats history. His cloass is very structured and he pays close attention to detail but it's all in the syllabus. Pay attention and you won't have any problems, he's there to help.
This guy is the biggest A hole I have ever met. He is rude to almost everyone in his class and acts like it is our fault that he ended up a comunity college teacher. He needs to watch his mouth. Do not take him. He isn't helpfull at all, tells to many crappy stories about his life, and makes the class alot harder than it needs to be.
AWESOME PROF!!! Still my favorite prof. of all time. He does push you, but you learn so much. He prepares you for the "real world" of college with writing, tests, and his overall expectations. Take good lecture notes and study the text for optimal success. I got an A and tons of invaluable info. Worth your time and effort all the way!!!
He talks down to his class often. You must read a chapter a week and do an online quiz, you do get 3 attempts. You write 2 papers, but he grades worse than an English teacher! His tests are essay form and from his lectures (not reading), I worked hard and got a 'B'.
Absolutely the WORST teacher I have ever taken..He's a complete jerk and loves to make his students feel inferior to him. I highly recommend not to take him, unless you like getting belittled in front of your classmates. Most of the work is done by computer and is timed. The tests are long essays to be written in class.
I definitelly recommend not taking him. It is obvious that he doesn't like teaching. He hates it when you ask questions or when you get up to use the bathroom. His tests are hard, and he thinks hes this hot shot ex-orlando-sentinel journalists. He grades harshly and I'll never take him again!!
don't take this guy..very mean teacher. Always sarcastic and does nothing but goes on and on about how the world is horrible. Tests are hard and he is obsessed with his computer.
I hate this teacher..worst teacher of all time. Hes very condescending and grades his tests like an english class at yale. He treats his students as if they are a much of idiots and completely unprofessional. The only good thing about this teacher is that he's on time. Ill never take his class again. Completely insane!!
Excellent teacher! Lecture was engaging, and informative.Funny and keeps the dicussion moving along. NOT A BLOW OFF CLASS.Textbook is used to take quizes on line...you must read the chapters. 3 essay tests but he gives you the questions prior to taking test. 2 papers to write. Take him if you actually WANT TO LEARN about history. extra credit given
Mr. Gilmartin was a very interesting character. I enjoyed and learned very well within his class, but can see how others would have a hard time. There are quizzes on each chapter in the book due every week on WebCT. His tests are all essays. He can get off topic alot, but the way he explains the past by using present day events helps.
Mr.Gilmartin wasn't an easy teacher at ALL. His classes are sooo boring and he can be quite a smartass sometimes.
Apparently there are alot of people who like the teacher... but for some reason I and the professor did not click. He was very opinionated, and does not give any breaks... even if you have a serious issue. Even when Webt CT was down... it was not his fault but ours... in response he replies that I should have found a working computer!?!?!?
Terrible Professor
Took Gilmartin for History to 1865. LOVED IT!!! This man knows what he's teaching. And it was so much fun. If you want to get something out of this class, take it. I learned so much, I would take any of his classes. Go to class, it helps. If you're a slacker, you will earn your grade.
His tests tend to be essays, which I prefer but seems to be that others do not. Lectures were very interesting. Shows concern for students' learning.
Very very toguh teacher but also extremely fair. Tests are all essays but if you listen to his lectures you should do fine. Quiz once a week on web ct so i suggest you read the book. Take note in class and do not be afraid to ask questions b/c he is there to help his students.
One of the rudest people I have ever met!! He shouldnt even be teaching. His arrogance and demeaning tone has def made me never want to take him again. I absolutely hated his class. Tests were hard in class essays. Not helpful at all and insults his students. High recommend not take him unless you enjoy being ridiculed in front of classmates.
Excellent! He is informative and helpful. He is a worker, he shows up early every day and you'd better. But, his organization of the course and his lectures are grreat. Really good stories. He just LOVES history and wants you to. Its a lot of work, but if you want a real teacher he's the one. Great Class.
Mr. Gilmartin is a tough teacher. My first impression was that he would be helpful and understanding. Everything I said, he replied with some type of insulting comment. He does know History. "Very Much" If you're good in history, this is the class for you, if not, you better choose someone else.
STAY AWAY! I took this class online. BAD IDEA! The first quiz I took online was in the 30's. I never met the instructor and it seems as if he has a chip on his shoulder. He seems a little RUDE & ARROGANT when responding to emails or discussion boards. FIND ANOTHER INSTRUCTOR IF YOU VALUE YOUR GRADE!
very very difficult instructor, do not recomment taking class with this teacher. He thinks that this class is a three or four thousand level class, the quizzes are extremely difficult and the tests are more difficult. If you care about your gpa, do not sign up for this instructor!!
This is the hardest class that I have taken by far...if you need to take a history class for your AA do not take it with this professor.
This was an online class. Professor seemed to respond to emails promptly, did provide study guide but with no correct answers.
Mr. Gillmartin is absolutely a great teacher. He is tough- You just have to work for your grade. He is by no means rude; but he is definitely direct. He really is not as bad as some people on here say he is. He really is nice. Dedicate time for his class & you will be fine!
Took his online class-READ THE BOOK! Quiz on every chapter, final, midterm and one paper. As long as you read youre fine, but you HAVE to read!
I am taking the online class and I haven't had any issues. Just read the chapters and take the practice quizzes before the real one... VERY easy. BTW you can take the real quiz 3 times and he takes the best grade. I have a 95.
Taking this professor online. As long as you read the book the class is fairly easy however he is very rude and sarcastic. Asking him a question will always get you no where. He is not very personable.
Prof. Gilmartin is extremely helpful, regardless of what the person below me says. He is just fed up with students being lazy, having poor excuses for everything, and failing to try finding answers to common questions on their own. He is the best teacher I have had at SCC and REALLY knows history. This class is not for lazy students.
WORST prof ever!!! Avoid him at all costs. He is not helpful. He is rude ignorant and arrogant. He doesnt teach anything he expects you to know everything on your own. That is not a lazy student that is a lazy teacher!
Dan Gilmartin is one of the best teachers at SCC. At least, he is one of the best teachers I have encountered. He will really challenge you to work. He is a former journalist, and will grade your papers hard. Nonetheless, it will infinitely help you as a person. He showed me how cool, and absolutely important, American History is.
This teacher is rude and asks alot for the tests. The tests are 60% of your grade and are in essay form. He gave us 15 min to have a 5 para essay (over 500 words) with out prev reading the question. Very hard and a waste of money. this method doesnt teach anything.
NO organization, no order, no knowledge. If u hang out and smoke cigs with him, u will pass. If u don't, 2 bad for u. U won't learn, and he won't care.
Professor Gilmartin is something to avoid like you would a kid with a viral infection. Yes, he is a very educated man. However he is a pompous ass too! He is very demanding of his students, which is fine, but expects us to be patient with him when he gets a cold. VERY HARSH on grading. ESSAY EXAMS and you have 15-20 minutes to complete them.
Hard class indeed. Lots of work. The essays were timed 15-25 minutes long. It sometimes takes that long just to clear your mind and think about what you will right. In the end if you listen to his hints (which are helpful)you will do fine. He doe not tolerate plagiarism in any form. If you are looking for an easy A this is not the class!
Worst class ever, timed quiz after every chapter, chapters are about 40 pages long, and you will read the ENTIRE BOOK. Lectures are boring and useless, doesn't lecture with the book, makes you retake quizzes because people fail them too many times, even if you get a 100 you still have to retake it, do NOT take this professor, he is a rude man.
I don't understand why people are complaining about having to read the assigned chapters. I took the class online and the time I would have devoted to sitting in the classroom was used to read the chapters. He allowed the students to repeat quizzes for a higher grade and though the essay exams were timed, he told you what you needed to study.
Sure, this class is challenging. The people who complain about having to actually read aren't very reliable resources. His grading is fair. What do you propose history class to be like if reading and comprehending is too much to handle? Contrary to some comments, you do not have to take quizzes twice if you're satisfied with the grade you got.
Very time consuming, assigned chapters from the book it is only half-there is ginormous amount of extra articles and quizzes,You will be reading all the time, there is 15 minutes for each 20 questions quiz-it's hard-you need to know the material well. If you want to know history and don't mind to spend ALL you time on it-go for it,otherwise stay awa
I've taken his online courses for AMH2010 and 2020. I LOVE his class! All you have to do is read and take quizzes. He gives you 2 tries per quiz - even unit exams. If you're good at reading comprehension, take him. If not, try a campus class. Not much time for tests so you have to know your stuff well.
Excellent professor! He's tough. But, he forces you to think. You will not pass if you don't keep up with your reading. Gives quizes online. Make sure you use the textbook's online study guide. He has a passion for history that rubs off on some students. Seems gruff in the beginning, but, truly a nice guy once you get to know him.
Excellent teacher, really knows his subject and has a good sense of humor and easy-going attitude. Lectures are lucid and interesting. Essay tests are difficult, but determines one's knowledge of the material. Online quizzes are fairly easy if you read the material, and if there's an error, he will correct it. Highly recommended!
This professor makes the online class WAY too difficult. You are allowed less than 1 min per question, and he posts questions on tests that are not in the book. He does not post any study guides in Angel pertaining to his opinions. This is a freshman class and it is geared to a higher level student If you are a history buff, go for it.
He does not know how to be helpful at all. His quizzes have 20 questions and you only have 15 minutes to finish. you have two attempts, but that does not help because the quizzes are not easy and very different. I asked him if he could give us more time and he said it was not his problem so..Don't waist your time and money with this guy!
This teacher is a HP in Spanish and a SOB in English. I don't know how we are paying a salary to an individual like this one.
Professor Gilmartin is a great teacher. Read the book and keep up with the online quizzes. If your expecting an easy A, go back to high school-you are in college now!
Avoid! Avoid at all cost! He is a horrible professor and does not care if his students succeed.
History 2020 - Professor Gilmartin refuses to provide feedback on tests and quizes. He says you should know what you got wrong and what the correct answer should be. Providing feedback is nothing more than training robots.
Professor Gilmartin refuses to provide feedback on tests and quizes. He says you should know what you got wrong and what the correct answer should be. Providing feedback is nothing more than training robots.
This professor is rude. He's basically a ****. Especially if you are taking his class online. He won't listen to any problems and he won't help you with ANYTHING. I've had my share of good and bad teachers, but he has been the worse so far.
Terrible, terrible teacher. Heed to this warning. Avoid his class at all costs. The class subject itself isn't difficult. all you have to do is read the chapters and articles and take a quiz. the worse thing about this class is the teacher. He is very rude. he does not give feed back, and is very unapproachable.PlEASE do NOT take his class.
I don't understand why all the negative feedback. I actually got an A taking his AMH 2020 online last summer. I've emailed him before and he's very helpful. A lot of reading and studying but if you're on top of your reading you will do fine in the quizzes and tests. He's very fair if there are any errors and responds quickly to emails.
I took his class last semester online and got an A. As others have stated, there is a lot of reading involved with this class but the tests aren't too difficult. I only had to email the prof a couple of times and he was generally helpful and thorough. Personality wise, it's not difficult to notice that he seems to be a bit of pompous but harmless.
What a waste of time, energy and money. This online class is loaded with undirected reading and GUESSING at what questions will be on the test. And don't bother asking for any help for feedback. Also, if you like to discuss your course in forums with classmates...find another professor!
Prof Gilmartin is a very good teacher. If you read the material you will pass the quizzes and unit exams. He gives 2 chances to take quizzes but they are timed. If you keep up with your assignments and have an emergency he will work with you as long as you communicate with him. I took the class online and got an A without a whole lot of effort
Read the articles and the book and you will do fine on the quizes. Quizes and exams are timed so know your stuff before taking. Was a little hard on grading of the report, but I would take him again.
Homework demanded more hours than my job. Instead of teaching you and directing you in preparation of a quiz or test, he has you read the textbook cover to cover so that nothing specific sticks out in your mind. He will then have questions on his quiz or test about a minor event on a specific date. You will be set up for failure.
This class involves insane amount of reading. You will be required to read the book cover to cover as others have stated and then the most minute details will be choosen for the quizzes. If you are not an avid reader DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will have a quiz every 3 days plus additonal reading for articles.
do your work. READ the book & make an outline with notes before each quiz & you will be fine. This is NOT an easy A, just do the work & get the knowledge you are paying for & you will pass.
Professor Gilmartin truly cares about history and is very well-versed on the subject. Some of the comments written here are troubling, as I found him to such a nice and helpful professor. If you do the assignments and reading, you CAN easily acheive an A. If you fail his course, you can only blame yourself for not doing the work. A+ Instructor!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you can set aside at least 2 entire days a week for preparing for a quiz. I found this hard with having 3 other clases and a job. This class gave me an immense amount of stress and I will NEVER take him again. If you are taking it make sure you write down every single detail of the chapters or else you'll fail.
If you want to deal with a cynical, rude, jerk, who thinks he knows everything, take this class. OH and lest I forget, if you want to read a hell of a lot about history.
He expects you to do college level work for a college level class. He knows who puts in the effort and who doesn't. He's glad to help those who do, and won't waste his time on those who don't. Welcome to college folks where it takes a little more effort than just showing up a couple days a week.
Since I took this class online I cannot comment on his teaching method bu I did have to email him and his rplies were always prompt.
I do not understand some of the negative coments posted about prof. Gilmartin,he is very stright forward and explaurse.ins what is expected at the beginning of the semester. it sounds like some people were not paying attention to instructions on how to study for the co
I took Honors history with this professor. Gilmartin REALLY knows his history, and he recommends you understand it from his perspective. Take good notes, do well on the quizzes/tests and this class won't be a problem. However, make sure you are ready to go to work on the first day of class.
Tough class and be prepared to read a lot! That being said, if you read and do the quizzes, very straightforward class. Stop complaining about having to read, people! It's a COLLEGE LEVEL history class! What do you expect??? The class really should be called "Reconstruction" though, because that's what the majority of the class is about. Recommend
Does not provide any outline for what you will be quizzed on. Reading each chapter multiple times is the only way to make sure you can pass the test, its very difficult to do so. Midterms and Finals are combination of all the tests questions no matter what he says. If you have the time for the reading great, if not AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
Online class. Loves history. If you keep read the assigned chapter, you'll do well in tests. Extra credit, helpfull. He is a no non-sense professor. I could take his class anytime.
I took this class online. The assignments are spelled out in the begininng and he's upfront with the fact that the class require ALOT of reading. The test questions were on minute details of the chapters. He is good with answering questions. Be prepared to read the whole texbook in addition to the supplemental text provided in the modules.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! He is very rude and discouraging! Every time I asked a question he made me feel stupid. He's always ranting about irreleavant things. There are two to three quizzes a week with 25+ pgs each. Somehow I managed to get a B, but this class was just horrible & stressful. It took up at least 95% of my time. TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I personally liked this class a lot. for those who say he is rude, he admits to it at the beginning of class that he is so you have time to drop. In all honesty is is more sarcastic and likes to make sure you understand there is more to one side of the story, and will tell you what he really thinks of the people and events of history.
It's relatively easy. A LOT of reading, like the whole book. Quizzes 2/3 times a week. Most are online on a chapter, some answers are online. Some are in class on an article from Sakai. Answers all ?s. He's rude and sarcastic, but unintentionally. 2/3 essays with all the material needed. EC for attendance & a couple EC assignments that were easy.
HE WAS AWESOME. Honestly coming from the wrong side of his politics as a student, I had a hard time dealing with his humor, but once I understood that it was for learning purposes, I got a better understanding of the class and of the subject overall. Take him, he is worth learning history the right way.
Yes, you need the book. Yes, there is A LOT of reading. When writing a paper, just give facts and avoid metaphors. I'm just grateful that there were 2 extra credit quizzes and an extra credit post-test at the end. Oh and yes, he comes off a bit rude and no, he didn't warn us.
Read material and do the quizzes and you will pass. Do all the extra credit, you will need it and don't worry about anything but the who what where and how in papers. He knows his stuff but he is NOT an easy A.
Took this online. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class/professor for you. 1-3 quizzes a week, with less than a minute to answer per question. A lot of reading, but it's a college level history course so that's unavoidable. He's rough around the edges as well. I suggest taking this on campus if you can. But I don't recommend him.
He is TOUGH. This class calls for a lot of work. A LOT. Like others said, 2-3 quizzes a week (which are on an extensive reading assignment). LOTS of reading. You will read the entire book. pretty rude when you email him a question. I took this course online, and I will never take another class with him again.
Prof. Gilmartin isn't the best of the bunch. he is an History professor that is more strict on grammar usage than my english professors. he has changed due dates on multiple assignments because he posted the wrong ones at the beginning of the semester. very rough and not welcoming for questions. I don't mind the reading or assignments, its college
This is my last semester at Seminole State and I have never had a problem with a teacher before. Yes it is alot of reading..the whole textbook, I expected that. His quizzes were very hard. The questions were minor details you wouldn't think were important. Very rude and did not provide any help at all. Would not recommend at all
A lot of reading, 90% of the grade is based on tests, 10 % for 2 forum papers on movies, class requires lots prep for the test, vague questions on exams , he allows quizzes to be taken 2 times online, teacher was rude when answering questions, but I passed with a B , learned a lot would take again, but he is not an easy teacher
i love history. i've always been great in it until i met this professor. i took it online due to me being pregnant. and i only passed the first two quizes and failed every other one after it. i asked for help he basically told me to read and look at the syllabus. i did read even wrote down the questions the first time i took it still failed.
He is pretty egotistical. He argued with students on messages , which was a bit irrational. Sent a message to every student saying he was a teacher at UCF for 15 years. Gave 38 minutes to do the Midterm which was 50+ questions. He is annoying quite frankly. He basically teaches the class to feed his over inflated ego.
This is an extremely difficult class. I spend 15/20 hours a week on this class and it isn't enough. Tests are hard. Tons of reading. Gave a paper due day before midterm. 28 chapter tests. At least 10 article tests. Movie watching, Paper writing. Complete nightmare. Not for the anyone that has other classes and a life; family, job, etc.
The class is not difficult if you read the assigned textbook chapters and articles. Take notes, that is key in any course. The professor is extremely helpful if you are putting in the effort. It's college, not elementary school so the coursework is going to be more time consuming and actually make you think.
The class is not hard if you read and take notes while doing so. I had no interaction with the professor except via emails he would group send.Students should be prepared to speak/write in proper English. Good grades are not just handed out, you actually have to work for them. The professor was rude. Given what he deals with, I might be too.
This is the WORST history instructor I have ever had! I normally don't write reviews about any instructor god or bad, but I had to write this review to warn the students who plan on taking him. He is VERY rude and picky. 33 questions for a quiz but you only get 25 minutes and chapters are 40-45 pages long. I would NOT recommend taking him.
The teacher can be tough when it comes to certain things but if he sees you are not putting an effort than he won't try and help.
He is a difficult professor. If you ask him a question, he copies and pastes from the syllabus. Comes off rude, and doesn't offer much clarification. You need to be very self-sufficient in this class, but it is possible to pass. Study the study aids he posts with tests, they are almost identical to quizzes and finals and be prepared to READ!
Over 50 assignments and test, get ready to read for hours and take quizzes everyday. Exam is hard, 75 questions only an hour to take exam. Some extra credit but doesn't seem to help. Not friendly or helpful. Felt like I was talking to a robot. Don't take him.
Rude, Unhelpful, Does not teach, Avoid this Instructor, Introductory course is more like an Advanced class, Does not follow his own guidelines. If you do take this class, a word to the wise, Appease his political view to even consider getting anywhere with his assignments.
He is clear cut in his expectations, gives a detailed schedule, & provides timely feedback. He anticipates common misconceptions & prepares for it by supplementing the somewhat monotonous text with primary sources that give you the cold, hard facts of the history. Annotate, take notes, & take the practice quizzes at Norton website ace the class.
I took him online and he made me believe he was very helpful, however when it came to the essay he was very contradicting of his rubric, and didn't answer any of my emails about the essays requirements. His emails come off as condescending, so don't bother... Quizzes on chps are easy. Article quizzes require you to read. Tests are made from quizzes
This Professor gives lectures, and flash cards but, has no guides and or ways to pass major exams like the Mid-term, and probably won't have one for the final exam either. His midterm is worth 40% of my grade, and he has everything in essay format. Including the Identifications. You have a total of 114 words for the first half of the semester.
Also, He is absolutely rude towards students. Out of the 114 identification words, he only gives you 10. Not helpful at all, and nobody can remember all those words in that prior time. he gives 12 questions, and its at random. his exam is horrible, and he is not clear with his expectations and you'll find out on test day how the exam is set up.
He wants you to memorize 7 chapters of the book, word for word. Two exams only and they are based on essays. Midterm counts as 40% of your grade, The final counts as 40% also. I went from a straight A student to failing the midterm after studying for 3 hours a night for two weeks. He doesn't provide feedback or detailed instructions.
Tough tests that seem impossible to pass even after studying long hours. Expects you to read a ridiculous amount of pages, watch videos, etc. If you take this class--I suggest taking no other classes as you will have to dedicate all of your time just to this course. I barely passed this class. Professor wasn't very helpful and comes off very rude.
Ridiculous tests.
He is a very good teacher in my opinion. History is not my favorite subject but so far he has been very helpful with any questions I have and has been understanding (that I am not good with history) He gives you the option to email him and is quick to give feedback. You do have to read for all quizzes book and articles but hard work will pay off
This is by far the worst class I have taken in my 2 years being a college student. You have to read pages and pages of articles for the quizzes. The midterm is 40% of your final grade as well as the final. You have to know 53 terms but only 12 are chosen RANDOMLY for the exam and you have to explain what it is/its significance. DONT TAKE!!!
Lots of article quizzes, most due on the same day ( you have about a month to take maybe 5-7 article quizzes) lots of reading for the tests between papers and book. Very honest, but really good teacher.
I looked forward to taking this History class, but soon realized that the reading, assignments and proctored exams was too much for an undergraduate class. This was more like a graduate level History class. I DROPPED the class and do not recommend this class!!!
Extremely difficult. I was on Canvas every single day doing the chapter and article quizzes. Unless you want to dedicate your life to this class, I don't think you should take it. He is extremely rude and sarcastic with email replies. This is definitely NOT an easy A.
Do not and I repeat do not take this professor. The midterm is 30% of your grade and so is the final. You have to memorize about 50 terms and he randomly picks about 12. The chapter quizzes(get the answers from quizlet) only counts as 10% of your grade. Article quizzes are 30% of your grade and require you to read about 20 pages.
Midterm was all essay based with some super obscure items picked for the essays. My luck i got a person who only had 3 sentences listed to their name, and weren't even a key term.
I took Gilmartin online... TWICE. If you don't pass the midterm and final don't even think you're going to pass. Chapter quizzes (all on quizlet) is 10% of grade. Article quizzes (articles 17 pages long at times) 30% of grade. Final and mid exam are both 30%. Final and Mid are terms you have to define and explain impact AND a random essay question.
Article quizzes 30% of your grade, 15+ pages to read. Chapter quizzes, 10%, are easier. The final and midterm are 30% each and you will get 50 words and 12-15 will be chosen but you will need to be very specific to significance and 3-4 essays with 1-2 chosen on test and they are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT (he curved grades by 12 and 10 pts).
This class is extremely hard and time consuming for an undergraduate AA class, and I would avoid it at all costs. I have an A+ now and plan to finish that way. This class is harder than any pre-nursing class I've taken, it makes my microbiology, chemistry, and anatomy class look like jokes. I would say be ready to dedicate 15 hours a week MINIMUM.
I read entire chapters, and do the learning curve activities and still feel somewhat lost on his quizzes. He provides no feedback on the quizzes so if you get an answer to a question wrong, you'll never know which question/topic you need to study more to do better in the future. This professor certainly doesn't seem concerned with students passing.
The best teacher I've had in awhile. The class goes in-depth at the truth behind our history. It was fascinating to get his perspective. If all teachers were like this the world would be a better place. Learn a different perspective and challenge yourself. I will take him again
I've never had a professor not give any sort of feedback after a quiz or test. Long quizzes questions but not time to answers. If you email him, you will only get a smart ass remark. Good luck!
He gives assignments every week that are either quizzes that are either on the chapter you read or the article you had to read. Given two attempts on each of them and they are timed. He does offer extra credit which i HIGHLY recommend doing. His mid term was tough and you are given three separate topic for the paper that you have to prepare for.
Not only does he give extremely difficult tests, he gives absolutely no feedback and very little resources. After studying for hours and still doing poorly on tests I emailed asking for advice on how to do better, however his response was not helpful and flat out rude. Dont recommend if you want an enjoyable undergrad history class!
Get ready to read A LOT. Not just the textbook, but also a lot of articles. The quizzes and tests are hard. However, he offers a lot of extra credit so your grade won't plummet.
Terrible teacher. He doesnt teach at all and hes tests arent from the textbook or the lectures. He will make you read 20 pages for a 10 question quiz. Dont take this class unless you want to devote all your life just to this course and fail.
Very difficult class if your going full time. A lot of reading every week. Test are very difficult and not much time given to take them. The history is very interesting, but there is just to much information to retain. The teacher is good, the course is just hard. So, be careful with what other classes you are pairing this class with.
This teacher is just not good at what he does unfortunately. He has no real concept of "teaching" where it always feels like he is trying to act smarter than you and does not care if you do not understand the topic or have any questions. He gives no test feedback which is absolutely atrocious. I recommend any other teacher that actually teaches. :/
Doesn't allow you to see what you got wrong on tests, which makes it very difficult to correct your knowledge for mid-terms and finals. Does not announce irregular due dates or remind of big projects. Zero room for error in this class. Few assignments. Not much communication in class.
He expects that everyone is inadequate and not capable of completing or getting a good grade in his history classes. His language is aggressive, insulting and very unwelcoming. I have never felt more uncomfortable and insecure in contacting a professor in my academic career. No feedback will be given unless you meet with him during office hours.
Well all I can say is that you will not know what you do not understand because he will not tell you. His responses to questions were very rude and it feels like you are set up to fail. His content states that you are a cheater and that everything will be checked aggressively for online classes. Tests are on an extremely short time constraint.
I took this professor on-line and this was a very challenging class for me. Professor Gilmartin was very positive and caring. As soon as I emailed him he responded in a timely manner. He has great videos and power-points that are very fun to watch. He definitely motivated me to keep pushing through and not give up. Take him and do your part!!!!
this teacher makes the class so difficult to understand
He was the worst professor I've ever had. Period. He was rude in his emails, unhelpful, and chapter quizzes were insanely hard. Please do not take him. He makes history way harder than it should be.
He is one of the rudest and most condescending professors I'v ever had. For an online, gen-ed course, this is insanely hard. Save yourself and don't do it. I go to a different University and took it online as an easy credit but wow was I wrong. There's no way to know what you don't know, he thinks we're all cheaters but there's no chance to anyway
This class is fairly difficult if youre doing full time schooling, but its not impossible to pass. You really have to pay attention and take notes for the quizzes, otherwise the tests are impossible. His grading criteria is pretty clear so if you pay attention to that, you should be fine. Id take again
Condescending in emails and gives unfair test times. 15 minutes for a 20-question test, which all the questions are hard to understand and are difficult to remember, especially in articles. 15-20 page articles to read and the questions in the tests are based around logic and are stated nowhere in the article. Absolutely horrible. Don't take it.
I have had many challenges with professors before, but this professor is the most difficult one I have ever had. An absurd amount of tests and reading, he thinks that we are going to major in history! I have never been so stressed over a class before. At least two tests a week, with about 15-20 pages of reading. AWFUL TEACHER, DO NOT TAKE!
The previous ratings and comments are 100% correct. He was one of the worst professors I've ever had. DOES NOT CARE about his student's success. Very demeaning. Allowed only 19 minutes for a 25 question quiz. Fails to consider feedback and is very rude about it. He has a poor attitude towards his classes. I earned my A no thanks to him.
If you are not good at teaching yourself, dont take this class. He is not very helpful when it comes to the class and his powerpoints/review have nothing to do with the tests, I feel like he makes up hisbown questions and makes you waste your time reading.
Gives you all your quizzes at once. Makes you take your exams at the school, and if you have a disability you have to pay for ProctorU. Gives you little time to take your quizzes, and the questions he writes are very specific.
This professor can be brash. Even condescending. He expects you to earn your grade. You wont coast through this one. If he thinks youre really trying, hell work with you. But, he has little patience when its obvious you didnt do the reading. His passion for History is obvious. Do the reading, participate and he can be your best professor.
I had to withdraw myself from his course. He gives very little time on his quizzes, and it's as if the questions are designed to make you fail. LOTS OF READING. You can't even see what you got wrong so you know where your weak points are. He doesn't seem passionate, doesn't reach out to students who may not be doing well. Save yourself.
He's rude and has no manners. Don't take him because his test are stupid
This professor is extremely rude and does not give a damn about his students, ALL OF THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE QUIZZES?! His tests are extremely hard and you are destined to fail his class. Sends rude emails and is extremely unprofessional. Thinks he's all that while all he does is be rude. Avoid him at all costs, don't waste your time and money on him.
OH. MY. GOD. Do not take this professor. He gives you all your quizzes at once and he is extremely rude. You can't just coast through this class and expect a good grade, also I'm pretty sure he makes up random questions just to confuse students. Save yourself and get a prof who actually puts effort in to their class and offers online lectures.
Check it out. If you wanna fail a class, sign up with this man right here. I have never struggled with a class this hard, especially a history one. All the assignments are quizzes you read about two chapters a week, with articles thrown in between. The tests are extremely hard and specific, down to a T. Don't throw your money down the drain.
Worst professor at this school. When I took this class, me and 10 others withdrew because of how bad it was. 0/10.
worst professor ever, do not take him at all.
does not care about his students, quizzes and tests are way too hard.
I'm writing this in 2021 but I took the class in the fall of 2020. I don't remember the teacher ever being that bad, but the lectures were optional, weren't interactive, and kind of boring so at times I wouldn't go because I'm like it's not fun to attend his class online. He left in the middle of the semester haven't heard about him since.
