His lecturing is horribly boring and half the time it seems like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Tests are really tricky. I would avoid his classes.
this class(medical mycology) was hard, but he is willing to help whenever. It helps with other classes, and i would definetly take another class from him.
Microbiology will suck no matter what. I though Dan did a very good job explaining the material and loves to help you. Go to the study sessions and do NOT skip class! It's not an easy class, but doable. I liked him a lot!
I don't know what is wrong with the other people who rated him. He is the worst professor I have had at the University so far. It's questionable at times whether he even knows the material. His class should be avoided if at all possible. He's a smart man. . .he just belongs behind a microschope rather than in front of a class.
I had heard terrible things about herman before I took the class and was terrified. It turned out to be one of the easiest sciences I've had. Yeah, you have to do ACTUALLY do work, and study, but it is MICROBIO. Plus,he is really funny and really wants you to tell me how he is doing and ask questions. If you take this class, just study for test!

He knows his stuff and tries to present the material as best as he can. His homework and exams are fairly hard, so be prepared to put in the extra effort.
NOT GOOD! Try to avoid taking him. His lectures are all over the place, and his tests are not fun at all. Goes much to quickly and expects everyone to have a background in this already. I highly suggest taking this with a different professor even if it means rearranging your whole semester.
Nice man...a bit awkward/nerdy. Horrible teacher. Hard to follow and there are far too many gaps in his lecture guides to keep up with. Plus, what he wants you to know does not correspond well with the text book. He just doesn't seem to grasp how difficult it is for students who are not familiar with the material. I advise against taking his class.
Horrible teacher!!!Avoid taking him, even if you have to wait for the next semester with the other teacher. Obviously a smart man, likes to use big words no one knows to put himself above us. He doesn't know how to explain things to us AT ALL. Not helpful either, a d*ck...deciding to add things to the final at the end since we "had time". TOO FAST!
Dr. Herman was always prepared. He gives notes and study guides for lecture(not a ton of bio profs do this!). Tests were extremely fair, study your notes and review book diagrams he uses in class. He is helpful and willing to answer questions after class or during his office hours. He's tough, but I respect his high standards. This info is impt.
He is a very organized professor unlike most. The notes he provides and the study guides are extremely helpful. The class was actually interesting and not as bad as most people describe it to be. Just study and put the effort in.
TERRIBLE! doesn't go by textbook and his "notes" aren't helpful and are hard to fill in. His lectures are boring, he likes putting himself above students and assumes students have a microbiology background. He goes way to in-depth for a general microbiology class. Worst teacher ever!!!!!!!
Nice guy but HORRIBLE class and HORRIBLE teacher! He is far too smart for the level he teaches. Do not take him, his notes are all over the place and does not have viewer-friendly pictures on the chalk board.
Nice guy but this is definitely a tough class. Attendance is not mandatory, but all points are tests and quizzes so it helps to go to class. Expect to study hard for exams it is a bio class! Overall interesting material, but a lot of studying and organization is needed outside of class.
Herman is a great professor. He is very well organized, he gives clear and simple explanations, he is passionate about medical mycology, and he is even-tempered, level-headed, and helpful. He is a very smart person and is an ideal biology professor. Go Herman!
Medical Mycology is a GREAT class. Dr. Herman is very excited about teaching this stuff and you don't learn about these things anywhere else. make sure you ask questions if you don't understand something, or he will breeze right through it.
Herman is a great professor. He is very passionate about mycology. Learned a lot in this class and not just about fungi. Learn about host immune response and also a lot about lab techniques and some genetics. 5 exams worth 20% each. Overall a great class and not overly difficult.
He is an awesome prof! He is very organized and only tests you on material he lectures about. The MATERIAL is hard, so I think students get frustrated and blame their performance on him. The class has a decent amount of points, your textbook is not needed, he gives you STUDY GUIDES, and holds review sessions. Take him if you can.
Herman is a great professor that loves teaching microbiology. His tests are somewhat hard but you have study guides for each of the chapters being tested on. His tests are mostly multiple choice with true and false along with easy matching sections. His quizzes are hard questions since you need to recall things about a specific chapter. STUDY!
Dr. Herman is a really nice guy, however does not know how to teach! He goes all over the place during lecture, and if you don't read the book before going to class you will have no idea what he is talking about. If you read the book you should be okay because all the information he puts on slides is from the book.
Herman's lectures are just too boring. Its just never clear. He never explain the processes. He just talks and talks and talks. the class would be better if he explain things up a little. I think his lectures are too monotonous. His study guides didn't help much. some of the things we didn't learn were tested in class.
Great professor! Truly passionate about mycology. Course is based off of four exams. It's important to be a good note taker, as he tends to move pretty fast.
Doesn't know how to teach! Goes out of order, takes about one topic then skips to something else. Is super boring and makes you want to fall asleep. reading the chapter is your best bet otherwise you will be lost! Never taking any class with him!
He's very kind and hilarious and helpful if you ask him questions. However, his powerpoints are just not smooth. It would be helpful if he made note slides that included everything, instead of having slides that seem they were just made by the book. His tests are very difficult and there is a quiz every week, but it's usually not too terrible.
Dr. Herman is a microbiologist who really knows his stuff. He's really into the information he presents to the class. But, he delivers the lectures in a way that will boar you out of your mind. You really need to force yourself to focus to understand the material. He makes very detailed study guides, & if you know those you'll do well.
Dr. Herman lectures are pretty boring, study guides about 11 pages long and the class is basically impossible to pass. It is the most failed class on campus. He does not want to see his students succeed. His test are a and b, a,b and c, everything but e. The class average on every exam was around a 62%. Take this class with precaution
Dr. Herman is my favorite. He genuinely cares about his students and their success in his classes. If you go into office hours he'll spend the time to make sure you really understand the concept. Anyone who says he's "mean" or "wants you to fail" or "his exams are too hard" shouldn't be in the major or should just pull it together and try harder.
Herman is a really nice guy, who genuinely cares about his students understanding the material and doing well. However, his exams and quizzes are brutal! If you don't put the time in and you don't know the details, you're screwed. But he is always willing and happy to help you out when you need it.
Dr. Herman is extremely well versed in the subject material in any class that he teaches. He claims to read over everything he is presenting the night before. His teaching style is up front and methodical- explain a topic and then go in depth on that topic. His tests are extremely challenging. Expect to read a lot. Great teacher.
Everything on the exams are right from the lectures. Use the textbook as a resource if you get confused.
TOUGH but INTERESTING if you love biology. This is a weed out class so if you aren't willing to put in the effort, you wont get the grade, and you will not pass. Herman speaks very clearly and will be able to answer ANY question you ask with ease. Grades are curved slightly. Never read a single chapter, LECTURES ARE KEY. lectures printable
He is a good professor overall. The class itself is hard because there is a lot of content that needs to be covered. He is more than willing to help if you go and talk to him during office hours. The S.I sessions help a lot and the study guides really help prepare you for the exams.
Herman is the only one who teaches the (should be illegal) BIOL 221. Horrible professor, makes tests impossible to pass! Has to curve the grade at least 15 percent, or you know, he could just be a better professor. Even if you read the chapters and his lecture slides, the tests expect you to be a graduate bio student! You will not get a good grade!
Herman is a great guy, but a horrible professor. I understand that Biology 221 is suppose to be tough, but not impossible - and Herman definitely makes it impossible! His lectures are interesting, understandable - but the content is extremely hard!! Be prepared!
I had Dan Herman for Bio 221 which is arguably one of the hardest classes on campus, but he provides you with options outside of class to really be successful. This class wasn't a cake-walk in the slightest, but if you take the opportunities he gives you, your life won't be too stressful. Btw his nerdy vibe to him is just down-right hilarious.
Herman is a really nice guy; but really struggles on effectively teaching the materials. Tests are VERY difficult; be ready for some all nighters.
Awesome professor. His lectures are clear and he makes tough topics easy to understand. He is always wanting to help. It is a tough class but he does not want any of his students to fail and he makes it perfectly clear. Good professor.
Herman is a really nice professor, and he genuinely wants to see his students pass. He is always available to help you when you start struggling. Tests are very specific and ask lots of "what if" questions; make sure you study.
Dr. Daniel P. Herman is a tank. He will help your knowledge move (like flagella) to places you never thought it would go, but he can make you "humble the average" with his exams. Don't be fooled though! The class is passable with a little lecture, a little study, a lot of office hours, and a little prayer to your maker. Study hard and you get A!
Don't take this class for an elective, way too hard and competitive. Expect to study 40+ hours a week. If your going to take this class, make sure other classes are easy/light load. Way too difficult for a 200 level class.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken. Dr. Herman is a great professor. First exam of the semester, I overslept and woke up half an hour into when the exam was supposed to start. He understood and was very nice about it. He's crazy nice and he really knows his stuff but this class was the actual death of me
If you love biology, you'll love this guy. He's passionate and gets so excited about the content. The class moves at the speed of light and the content is tough. He posts study guides, it helps to do them while listening to recording of the lecture. GO TO SI. He is a great teacher, but you have to work your butt off for an A. there's a lot of E.C.
Dr. Herman is a great prof. He is available outside of class or lab and will answer questions and talk things through with you. He is a cool dude.
He is a good professor, but Bio221 is harder than anything anyone will tell you. His Exams are so incredibly in-depth, you have to study for weeks if you want any chance of getting an A.
THE HARDEST CLASS AT EAU CLAIRE. If you don't put in the work, you will not pass. Herman is a great professor, but the class is way too difficult
Had Dr. Herman for 221 lab. Quizzes are hard with tough grading, but if you truly care you'll find the time to study and do fine. Shows passion for what he does. Very accessible outside of class, and if you have questions he is a great person to come to. Pointed me in the right direction to start undergrad research. Great connection to make.
I'm not going to repeat what everyone else has said in this class. BIO 221 is obviously a challenging class. However, the best way to pass this class is to voice record each lecture with your phone, fill out the study guides using those lecture recordings, and study the filled out guides. Do that, and you'll destroy the tests; I promise.
I took this class during COVID online and it was hands down the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. Even if it was in person it still would be hard, so many people withdrew from the class because the teaching methods were awful and there is way too much to learn in a short amount of time. Unless you like studying 40 hours that is..
BIOL 371 was the hardest class I've ever taken in my four years at UWEC. I would've picked another BIO course if I had a second chance. I recommend you do the same while you still can. His tests are fair but challenging. Prepare to devout 10-20 hours A WEEK to this course to get an A. Stay away unless you want to take a PhD level course on fungi...
Honestly it was a harder class but its a high 300 level class for a reason! Hes a really nice guy and yes, he is lecture heavy, but it isnt a beginner class. You all are giving him a low rating because you arent getting an A in the class and thats on you because his exams reflect what is lectured on. Not sorry! Herman you rock!
Took his class during COVID Fall 2020. Spent at least 14 hours each week watching videos and additional hours for studying. Tests were DIFFICULT... at least there was 5 points of extra credit on it. I studied so hard and still didn't end up with the grade I wanted. Only grades in the grade book were 5 quizzes, 4 tests, and 1 final. SO MUCH WORK!!!!
BIOL 371 was very content heavy but the exams were a good representation of the material - its just very challenging because there is so much content to cover. But Dr. Herman is a really good prof and wants to help, the only issue is this class has a ton of content (including lots of current research which makes it seem like a grad level class).
As others have said, super nice guy. He lays his class out in a easy to follow way. However, the only thing you are graded on is exams and quizzes. He provides study guides for you, which are pages long and the exam questions do not relate to the study guide in the least bit. When I reached out for help, his advice was simply to study more.
Dr. Herman is the best lecturer for BIO221, hes very clear and does a great job at explaining content. He is also very helpful during office hours. To succeed in this class, its important to begin studying early, talk out each slide and write out the content on a whiteboard, and attend SA tutor sessions and office hours!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Though I studied for days prior to exams and thought that I had a grasp on the material, Herman asks questions that are beyond the scope of an undergrad level while expecting you to memorize unreasonable amounts of information and detail. He is nice but has too high of expectations and doesn't curve.
Dr. Herman is a great lecturer. The only problem is that if you are inattentive for just a couple minutes, you could have missed something very important. I found myself studying for this class at least two hours a day to earn a B. You choose the grade you earn based on how much you work for it. It's not the professor in this case, it's you.
This class was rough, no sugar coating that. There is just simply so much material to memorize. Dr. Herman's quizzes and exams will ask about the smallest detail that he mentioned in class (not even on the slides). You have to transcribe every word he says in lecture and memorize everything. It's a lot of work but a decent grade is possible.
The worst class I have ever taken at UWEC. You have 5 quizzes that are supposed to benefit you to let you know how well you are understanding the material, but you only have one attempt. However, does not benefit you at all. The only other grades in the gradebook are the 4 exams and final. Seems like nice guys but horrible class structure. AVOID
This class is extremely difficult. Dr. Herman's lectures are incredibly boring and hard to grasp the main points. He doesn't seem to care what students learn, instead, he just loves to hear himself talk. Your grade is made up of 5 quizzes (which are off the notes, online, and easy) and 4 exams that are very hard. There is no homework or anything.
Attendance isn't require, but it would be hard to pass without attending lecture. The final grade is based on 5 quizzes, 4 exams, and a cumulative final. The tests are based on what he says in class along with his slides. When taking notes focus less on the slides and more on what he is saying. He posts study guides that are helpful for exams.
Going to lecture is very beneficial, and the textbook summarizes ideas from class nicely. This class is hard, but Herman makes difficult ideas easier to understand. His tests are manageable with studying. If you pay attention in class and study, this class is really not that hard. The bad reviews are from people not trying that hard IMO.
Professor Herman is a nice guy, but holy crap his class is hard. I was a straight-A student all throughout high school and my freshman year of college. I barely passed the class with a C-. There are no papers, homework, or practice material. All you are graded on is 5 exams and 6 quizzes.
Dr. Herman is a really great, caring professor. His lectures are definitely long and can feel dull, but all the material is relevant. Caffeinate and come ready to take detailed notes--any detail discussed in class might appear on an exam. The quizzes are a good way to prepare for the exams; they have a similar format and relevant content.
Dr. Herman seems like a nice person but I often found his lectures to be bland and hard to follow. I often felt like he would move through info too fast and I wouldn't be able to get everything of value that I needed in order to understand the content. I struggled greatly on his exams. And these exams covered approximately 85% of our grade.
It's tough, but you can do it. Dr. Herman speaks clearly and wants you to learn. To best succeed in this class, I recommend audio recording lectures and adding to your notes later. If you have questions go to office hours. Even though this is a big class, very few students take advantage of office hours so you will get the help you need.
I liked him for 221. Not my favorite lecture style, but he gets the info across and wants to help people understand.
Microbiology is a very difficult subject to understand, but Dr. Herman presented information to me in a way that made sense. In this class you will have 4 regular exams, 1 final exam, and 5 quizzes, totaling 550 points.
He is very passionate and a good lecturer. I takes pauses so you have time to jot things down. I took him for bio 221 and I think he is the best professor for that class.
Passionate and very knowledgeable. Lectures provide a lot of information, but if you study the lectures well you will do well on the test. No surprise questions. Just a lot of information to know.
Daniel Herman is incredibly passionate about biology! However, this class is very lecture heavy. I recommend that you record the lectures and listen back... the tests are ONLY based on the lecture. As long as you're committed, you will be just fine!
This lecture went up until the exact end time or ended late nearly every day. Professor Herman was often apathetic to students' questions or requests in lecture, usually citing the slideshow and giving little further explanation. The exams are all you will be graded on and they are extremely tough, even if you study. Plan on going to SI to pass
He seems like a great guy, he just made the class very hard. He dives too deep into the topics, so it becomes a lot to process. So much is talked about in the 50 minute classes. He tests you on the most specific things ever. I think I would've done so much better in the class if he would've just tested us on the most important concepts.
Daniel Herman is both one of the best professors I have had, while also being the most difficult class I have taken. Bio221 is A LOT of content to learn and the exams are difficult, relying on fully understanding the material rather than memorization. He clearly cares about actually teaching and not just presenting material to memorize briefly.
Dr. Herman is an incredible professor. He is passionate and takes the time to explain things that are complicated. IF YOU seek his help, he WILL help you. He wants his students to succeed, but you have to want that for yourself too. He has the difficult job of teaching a really challenging course and does a fantastic job.
Dr Herman has a lot of passion for what he reached but the course was not paced in a followable way as well as it did not follow the syllabus at all. Be prepared to take notes and memorize after every class. That is the only way to know all the information that is presented.
Extremely rude to students who struggle with testing anxiety and clearly does not understand how hard the class is as he teaches it as though you should learn it immediately and that it's your only class you have to worry about.
Dr Herman is a nice professor and is very passionate about microbio but be prepared to write down everything he says because that will be the content on the exams. One bad thing is that the only thing in the grade book are exams and quizzes which is annoying.
Dr Herman is genuinely a very kind professor. He offers lots of SI sessions and office hours to help students with such a hard class. Only issue is that his lectures can be overwhelming because he dives super deep, so it's a lot of material to study and the exams are HARD. But if you use your resources and study a lot, you can do okay.
BIOL221 is a very content heavy course but Dr. Herman tried to make it more bearable. There were lecture recordings and extra credit on exams this semester. He admits that the real learning happens outside of class, which is true. Spend some time with the material every day and be prepared for the packed 51-minute lectures.
Herman has the job of teaching very difficult classes. With with being said, he is clear in his lecturing and speaks at a pace that you can keep up with. He records his lectures but I found it most helpful to take notes during lecture and then read over the textbook afterwards. You WILL be expected to put time and effort into the class.
If you can avoid taking him as a professor do. Everyone I know who's taken any of his classes had to dedicate their entire lives just to pass. Or dropped the course to take at CVTC.
I've had him for a couple classes and he is a great professor. People like to blame their struggle with heavy and hard lecture material on him and his teaching, but he does an amazing job. For exams, all I do to study is fill out the study guides and ask chat gpt for practice questions. The study guides are beyond helpful for the tests!!
only graded and 10 things the whole semester. if you slip up on one of your tests your grade will tank.
I think if we were graded on more than just exams and quizzes it would be nicer. I'm not the greatest exam taker even when using his helpful study guides and to have nothing to buffer that sucks. Class would be better if I think he were to restructure things. Not everything is on the slides & he talks way to fast to keep up if ur on the slower side
If you've seen scrubs he kind of looks like Dr.Kelso, but know that everything in this class is only exams and quizzes so be prepared to either retake the course or dedicate a lot of time to studying
Hard to follow during lectures as he simply just reads off slides.
5 quizzes, 5 exams. That's all there is in the gradebook. Attending class is "mandatory" in the sense that he cuts/won't talk about material from the slides if he gets behind but won't update the slides to reflect that. Difficult to recover from a bad exam grade, although not impossible.
