Great guy, pretty helpful. Fun class to be in.
What a cutie! Hyper though, you won't fall asleep
Great teacher and incredibly intelligent. His intellect makes him hot.
great professor!! had him my freshman year, very close to students and responsive about their concerns!!

Easiest Professor in the Department. Never had a problem, always a gentleman, even opened the doors for me. The roses were nice too.
My loins are thirsty for the knowledge Hollis is so magnificently and deliciously endowed with. From the moment I first opened his textbook, I knew that I was in for a real lesson. Teach me for I hunger. What a beard!
Great class. you didn't even need to show up for the production of the newscast. He likes students with moutains of knowledge. I wish I could take him for every class - he's smokin'
Dan is the man
He is very helpful but he has his favorites...I wasn't one.
Way funny, a lot of energy (perhaps too much), understanding, and a lot of fun.
Dan genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. As a professor, he is fair and clear about his expectations. He's always very hyper & energetic which makes class interesting and fun.
Dan is very approachable and helpful. He really wants students to learn, not get easy As. He's always wired, so try to be enthusiastic. Talk a LOT. He likes that.
Dan is the best professor at Marshall. Without a doubt.
Dan gets the information across and you'll definitely learn if you have him for JMC 100. Doesn't mind repeating the information to make sure you get it right. Be careful though, sometimes he speaks fast and jumbles things. High caffeine level?
Great teacher! Need more like this one!
He's AWESOME!! I have him at 9am and he ALWAYS keeps me awake! Hes a little bit crazy but a great professor! There needs to be A LOT more professors like him!! He really gets all the information through your head! Always willing to help you! TAKE HIM!
EXTREMELY passionate about what he teaches. Makes you care about the material. I would so clone him.
I think that Hollis is a great teacher. I did give him the hot rating because i am for some odd reason attracted to him.
Fantastic teacher! Really gets into what he's teaching, but it can sometimes be hard to tell which points he's emphasizing for an upcoming test, since he's so enthusiastic about all of it. Very helpful and wants his students to succeed, though. Take him!
Dans the man in this class. He keeps you on the edge of your seat everyday. I swear theres more than soda in his drink each morning. God man.
Dan's the dynamo man. MU needs to plug him into a generator and save utility costs. One of the most dedicated and enthusiastic professors I ever had. Take him to experience what a good prof. should be. But, don't expect an A.
Dan is a wonderful man who really keeps you on the edge of your seat during class. His tests are really hard though. He asks very particular questions. He is telling us 75 of the questions for the exam, however so he does want his students to succeed!
he is very helpful. and he makes learning fun.
This guy runs around the theater that I took the class in and screams at us and gets in your face while he's teaching. He drinks a bottle of water and a bottle of Dr. Pepper every class. I'll take him again. Laugh at his jokes, even though they aren't...
Fun guy. Great prof...
Had Dan for 100 and 101...I only wish he was an advertising professor too bc all the ones from that department I've had so far suck! He is a great teacher who wants you to learn and is very fair in his classroom. The department could use a few more Dans
His class is very easy as long as you go every day! The test questions are right from the notes and there are 4 assignments. He also makes the class entertaining!! I don't know how someone can have so much energy so early in the morning!
Quite possibly the best professor I have ever had.
The most fun you can have at 9 in the morning is in this class.
Mr. Hollis is an extremely nice man and wonderful teacher. He is a bit cooky, but that makes it interesting. Take him when you can. You'll enjoy it.
One of the best professors I ever had. Tons of fun, always helpful and forever crazy.
i wanna hook dan up with my single mom...then he could be my stepdad and entertain me every day!
Dan Hollis is one of those people that can change the way you look at something with just a simple statement or question. I look forward to hearing more of his philosophical ideas over the next few years.
He does a great job making his subject seem more intresting than it actually is.
I'm IN LOVE with this man! He is my advisor & I had him for jmc101. He is FOR SURE one of the best at MU, no doubt about it! He's a perfect 10! Take him and you'll fall in love just like me ;) Hey, i loved him so much i'm taking him again!
What can I say about a man like Dan Hollis. Best professor I have ever had, although it seemed like he made me the butt of a lot of his jokes, but it is all in good fun. One time he refused to give me my test back, so I had to take it by force.Funny Stuff
Very hyper and funny.
DAN is the MAN! I <3 him VERY MUCH. He is my advisor and he's just so super..and he treats everyone like they are on his level and nothing less. Really a great guy.. some woman needs to snatch him up!
Hollis is awesome. Plain as that. He makes JMC 101 really fun and you actually look forward to going. Great jokes too.
Dan Hollis rox my sox!! His class is soo entertaining! Never a dull moment with him. My favorite part was his impersonation of a reporter in a hurricane, funny stuff right there! :)
Dan reads these. He told me so. He's very ego-centric. Haha, just kidding. Dan is not only the best professor I've ever had, but he's also the most caring. He loves what he does and loves it even more when his students love it, too. He goes above and beyond.I'll always be grateful for his guidance.
Dan is simply the man. I had him for JMC 100 and 101 and I wish I could have him for more classes. Too bad he is not an advertising professor. We could use him in that department. Definitely one of the best professors I have ever had. See you in JMC 402,436! Keep up the great work Professor Hollis!
Dan makes class a fun learning envioronment. There is never a day in his class that you will not get a good laugh. He's a great teacher and I can't wait to take him for other courses. I love his teaching style
he makes this subject a lot of fun to learn about. he gives absolutely everything you need to know. go to class and you will do fine.
Hollis is awesome. He makes you laugh and while you are laughing you don't realize how much you are truly learning. Too bad he can't teach every journalism class.
Professory Hollis is great! This has been my favorite class. He is so funny and everything is very clear. If you go to class and take notes the tests are very easy, all multiple choice.
Hollis will make you want to major in journalism. He is the absolute funniest professor at marshall. He screams, jokes, sings, everything. If you take notes and study the stuff he tells you, the tests are easy. Very lenient with papers. HIGHLY recommend. Hilarious guy.
Hollis, I know you read this everyday. Don't deny it! You're my favorite teacher this semester, and I didn't even take your class this semester. You rock, that's all I've got to say!
Take his class! He is the best Jschool teacher at Marshall. He wants you to succeed and will help you whenever you need it.
Very interesting approach to teaching; it works. He keeps the class interesting and he cares that his students learn.
If there's something about his class that you don't like, it's probably your fault.
Dan is the best teacher in the J-school. In fact, he is the best teacher I have come across in my college career, he is hard, but he is extremely fair to students. Thanks for everything Dan.
Hollis is the man. Very tough teacher. Very energetic. Very fair. Hollis is a great professor and the best in the J-School. If you don't like him then there is something wrong with you.
If you like being bombarded by useless trivia and then regurgitating it onto paper then take this guys class. Hes great at reciting notes and screaming to try to keep you awake. I'm just glad I took his class because it made me change my major
By far the best teacher I've had at MU! I enjoyed going to class and was interested in all the things he said. he made the class a lot of fun and i learned a lot. go to class, take notes, and you should have zero problems.i would recommend this class even to those not majoring in journalism!!!! GREAT CLASS. GREAT TEACHER.
Best teacher I've had at this school. Never a down day, always happy to be teaching and makes it fun even with a 400 level class. Best there is at MU and especially in the JMC department.
Dan is the best teacher ever.
Dan is hilarious. Don't sit up front in his class or he may hit you with the papers he carries constantly. He's the type of professor who you can stop by his class and just B.S. with him for a while about anything. However, behind the facade of the crazy professor, he really does care about students, which is great.
Prof. Hollis is the coolest teacher at Marshall. He loves what he does, and is always there for his students. I wish he could teach all the j-school classes.
dan's very enthusiastic...and sometimes funny. he thinks he's hilarious though. that also makes him funny. he knows no humility.
Dan Hollis is my hero! Dan is the professor that made me want to come to Marshall when he taught the journalism class I took at Governor's Honors Academy. Thanks for everything, Dan Hollis!!!
Holy crap. He is definitely my hero. He threw a pen in my general direction once and I felt like a celebrity.

Knowing a little bit about the business already, Dan Hollis really knows his stuff. Hell of a guy, and funny as hell. Can't wait for future classes with him.
What all college professors should be like.
I wish all the j professors were as caring and understanding as Dan.
He is the bomb. Dan is the man. He cares about his students and it shows. He is anal about the time, so dont be late if at all possible. He always says cute little phrases or hollisisms as i like to call them. The BEST JMC professor that there ever was. Hates to be talked over, so no talking while he is talking.
Hollis is an amazing professor!!
I am not going to lie, the class can tend to get a little boring because of all the lectures, but he tries to make them interresting. He is probably the most interresting teacher that I have. As long as you do your assignments and show up for class, then you'll get an A or B.
He's Awsome!!
Dan Hollis is an amazing professor. JMC 101 was the best class I had this semester. Very energetic and fun, gives freshmen breaks especially during the 1st semester. Tests not extremely difficult, assignments are easy. I recommend him to any journalism student. Excellent, fun guy! He will keep you laughing.
I love this man! He is absolutely amazing and I would reccomend taking any class he is teaching. He is hillarious!
Dr. Hollis rocks!! This man is awesome, and likely the greatest professor currently at Marshall, if not the best professor to have EVER taught at Marshall! His enthusiasm is contagious, he's funny, and he's so very helpful! I love this guy and encourage anyone to take him. Even if you're not a Journalism major, take one of his classes anyway!
I will marry this man one day. I love his class. Take him if you have to take this class. It's amazing. So much fun!
BY FAR HANDS DOWN the BEST professor at Marshall University. Though he gives tough tests, etc., he grades fairly and tells you EVERYTHING you need to know in notes. Hilarious, full of energy, LOUD and downright fun to have. You will NEVER want to miss class. Journalism major or not, take this guy at least once while you are here.
Do not go to sleep he will wake you up and scare you half to death
Dan's the Man!!!! Need I say more? Take the class or your a knucklehead!!!!
Best teacher I have EVER had. There is alot of info in this class so go to every class. He's the man, entertaining and his lectures involve you so be prepared! In all, a very fun class. He talks to you as a friend, he doesn't talk down to you.
I only had Hollis for one course during my time at Marshall, but he is one of the most memorable people I met there. He treats you like a friend and is very helpful. His tests will bust your butt if you don't study really hard for them, but he makes sure you know all of the info for them. He's a great teacher and person!
learned a lot in this class
Say to yourself, SELF... take this class! You'll have to work hard, but it doesn't seem like work with Hollis. Tests are hard, study everything, but only you can fail yourself.
i don't care if you're a journalism major or not, you need to take his class. he is hysterical. my favorite professor ever.
I had to retake this class because I really didnt attend class as often as I should have. READ the text book, and take plenty of notes. Very helpful, and will be the most entertaining professor you will ever have.
If you're trying to decide between Hollis and another prof, don't be stupid. I've had him for three classes and my only complaint is he has never once called me a knucklehead.
Great Class. Quite entertaining; fun.
I have had Hollis for 101, 201 and 402, and wish that he taught more of the classes I need to take!! His tests are difficult (lots of information), so take good notes and don't procrastinate on studying! If you take good notes, study, and go to class, you can get an A.
Hollis is awesome. You can't fall asleep in his classes if you wanted to. You learn a lot and have fun in almost every class. He has a unique personality and is quite humorous. I think he drinks a lot of caffeine...:)
What a great professor! He's the most amazing, memorable, unique, and slightly crazy professor you'll ever have. It's not exactly an easy class, but it's a fair one, and you'll really be missing out if you don't take him. Study, pay attention (he makes it hard not to), and you'll have one of your greatest experiences of college.
DAN IS THE MAN...plain and simple.
Great teacher, great looker
I don't know how Hollis isn't #1 on the entire RMP site.He is the best.He will do anything to help you out,and goes out of his way to be fair.I've had him for a few classes and my only complaint is he doesn't teach more classes because I would take every one.Don't slack off, do your work and tell him if you have a problem! You won't be disappointed.
hollis is the best!
Dan Hollis is the reason that I am in the school of journalism. After being iffy on choosing a major, taking Hollis' intro to journalism class solidified that I was where I wanted and needed to be for the career that I desire. He is encouraging and has a real desire to help students learn and lead them in their desire to be better journalists. A+
Dan Hollis is an awesome teacher and advisor. He gets along with his students very well and is willing to help if you ever need it. Definately worth your while to take him.
His class was so much fun, I actually miss it. He's entertaining as heck, so there may be times where you don't even realize how much you're learning. However, don't think you can slack off, because you HAVE to put in a good effort to pass the class. But if you attend class, pay attention, and study, you'll do great and have a great time, too.
Other professors need to take a cue from Dan Hollis. He is absolutely the best teacher/mentor a student could ask for. Caring, entertaining, knowledgeable--all describe Dan to a T. Do yourself a huge favor and take him if you can.
Great Professor. Incredibly enthusiastic and fun. This is in essence an intro to Journalism, and if you need reaffirmation about your choice to pursue a degree in Journalism, he'll be the one to give it to you. Top notch guy, it was a pleasure taking this course.
best professor ive had at marshall. he is passionate about journalism. may seem intimidating at first and might give you a hard time but its all to get you to loosen up and have fun. his class is very interesting. exams are all based on the notes so show up to class. i highly recommend taking his class.
Dan Hollis rocks my world!!
He is the best teacher I have had thus far.
Dan is, without a doubt, the best teacher in the world.
This class was hard, but if you at least do your part with the key facts test then you can pass. The midterm is killer, so plan to study your heart out because it will help your grade. Otherwise, if you just do the min. you will leave with your C. Great guy, and the class was interesting.
Professor Hollis keeps class interesting. You can tell how much he enjoys the subject that he teaches. He really brought attention to the women of Journalism that have been overlooked throughout the years.
dan is an extremly energetic and nice teacher. as long as you come to class and write down the key points that he makes clear while lecturing, you should do fine. as long as you come to class and look over your notes, you should get a B. if you actually study and do the assignments, you will get a A.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER THIS SEMESTER. IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE AN EARLY CLASS THERES NO BETTER WAY TO START YOUR DAY. HES HILARIOUS AND FUN. ALWAYS WILLING TO GIVE HELPFUL TIPS AND JUST AN ALL OUT GREAT PROFESSOR TO TAKE!!! READING THE BOOK IS REALLY IMPORTANT EVEN THOUGH HIS TESTS ARE 80% LECTURE. CANT MAKE AN A WITHOUT READING THE BOOK.
Dan Hollis is amazing. As long as you attend class, take notes, listen, and do the assignments you will do well in his class. I never read the text or studied for a single test and got A's on everything and an A in the class. He makes going to class fun. Wish I could take him again.
He did a very good job teaching!
By far my favorite prof so far. His class never gets boring. He makes you want to learn the material.
Dan is funny and REALLY loves teaching and cares about his students. Tests are easy if you follow the notes and the other assignments are easy as well. Unfortunately, I didn't gain any new knowledge out of his class except for a few pieces of facts. Overall, he is a good professor.
Dan Hollis is the best prof you will have at Marshall! I always leave the class happy, and I always learn something! Great way to start your day, he's so helpful outside of class also! DEFINITELY take any class he teaches, or you'll be missing out!!! :)
I had Dan as my uni professor as well. He's the best ever. Seriously. He makes class fun, but you still take in all that he's said. He's also wonderful outside the classroom. He's more helpful than almost any of my friends. I highly suggest him, for anyone. :D
If you've never had Hollis before don't waste your time reading every one of these. they all say the same thing. nobody hates Dan. It will be a great class and almost everyone finds a way to take him again.
Dan Hollis is a great professor, and you are lucky enough to have him as your professor then you are in for a treat. Dan has a lot of energy, and lets anyone comment, when it is relevant to the subject. He dislikes annoying people who talk to much, which is great. Overall, you should and need to take one of his classes.
Dan Hollis is by far the best professor at Marshall University. If you are unsure about a profession in journalism of any type take his class and talk to him. Take notes, study for the tests, do the assignments, it's impossible to fail if you do that. He's the BEST!
Best professor at Marshall, hands down. I've had Dan for three classes (101, 402, 480) and I'm legitimately sad that I won't have him as a professor again. He's a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person; I learned so much from him and I've never had a more supportive professor, both in and out of the classroom. You couldn't ask for anything more.
Dan Hollis is amazing!Take any class of his that Marshall offers. =)
He is the man! Such a great teacher. Wrote my letter of recomendation too!
He's always willing to help!!
If it isn't obvious enough already with 25 pages of good quality comments, Dan Hollis is a superb professor! I LOVE journalism and writing, and he made me love it even more! I despise monotone professors, but Dan is above & beyond that! He's passionate about what he does and that's what makes his class worth taking. Deff pumps you up in the AM! (:
so passionate about his job. so intresting too. he makes you never want to miss his class because you want him to like you because he is so nice and cool. i love him!!!
Best teacher you will ever have! He is so personal with his students! He really cares about you and tries to get to know you. He absolutely LOVES his job and students. It's so enjoyable to come to class everyday! He's really fun and a little bit crazy (: Not a lot of homework either! I definitely recommend taking him if you have the chance to!
Dan hollis is the man!!! i choose the school of jmc b/c of him! he loves his classes , u get candy from in his office. pick hollis for your jmc 101 class , u will love the class
Basically, Hollis is the man. If you don't have a chance to take him during your time at Marshall then you're missing out! By far the best professor I ever had (and probably will ever have). HOLLIS FOR PRESIDENT.
He's passionate, cares about his students, and cares just as much about media. He's fair, but he expects the best out of his students. He's one of the treasures of Marshall University.
definitely take Dan Hollis!!! he loves his job & makes class so interesting. just take notes & pay attention & you'll have no problem passing the class with an A or high B :)
He is by far the best professor I have had! You can tell he enjoys teaching. Easy class if you attend and pay attention. Least boring lecture class ever. I highly recommend him!
BEST PROFESSOR I HAD THIS SEMESTER!!! He's hilarious and engages the class when he lectures.
Genuinely cares about what you are doing. I can't stress how great his class is.
One of the greatest instructors I've have ever known. Get's into his lectures, gets others involved in asking questions, is very helpful and is almost always in his office when not teaching. :) <3
One of the best professors I've had since being at Marshall! Keeps you interested in the material and likes to have fun in class.
Dan is honestly the most caring and helpful professor I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He is also the most genuine person I know. His class is incredible. Do yourself a favor and choose him.
This is the professor you see in movies about college. You'll have him for 2 classes and talk to him about your whole life. He's honest with you when your friends won't be and he acts as not only a highly knowledgeable professor but a mentor to be admired and someone who truly cares about your success and well being. Everyone should know Dan.
One of the greatest professors I've ever had. Keeps you interested in the material and has tons of fun in the class. Tests long but easy. I took this course just as an elective and I'm really glad I did. I learned so much because I went to every class and his lectures were great. However, do not use your phone or pack up early!! He will get mad.
Professor Hollis was born to be a professor. His teaching style is so effective and you don't even know it because you are so engaged in the fun lecture. I can say with confidence that he will be the best professor that I will have in all my years. He truly wants you to learn and succeed in life. Highly reccomend! Dan is the man! :)
I've already rated Dan, but I took my first class with him since he became the assistant dean and after having taken his class, he hasn't changed at all. Still the same great professor.
Incredibly helpful and interesting. No book is necessary and although there isn't attendance, you have to go to pass the exams and the class.
Dan Hollis is amazing. It's going to be dificult for any professor to top him during my next four years at Marshall. You will learn so much in his class. Take good notes and come to class, and you'll do great! You won't have any problem wanting to come to class, though, because of how awesome and fun he is! Highly recommend!
Amazing!
Hands-down one of the best professors at MU, if not THE best. Hilarious, entertaining, and so interesting. He makes learning journalism so much fun. The class itself isn't easy, but it's not terribly difficult, either - just study and take good notes. You won't want to miss class because he's so much fun during lecture. An amazing asset to MU.
Hollis is the man.
Honestly the best teacher I have had so far at Marshall University. Class is easy if you come to all of the lectures. He's hilarious so you won't want to miss the lectures anyway. You don't use the book, but he will pull about 5 question an exam from the special sections in the book (pie charts, pull outs, etc.) Highly recommend.
Very entertaining and passionate about his job and the students
He is very energetic and entertaining. However, if you are a bad note taker or test taker, this class will be difficult. He talks 95 mph and expects you to get everything written down. Then, the things you miss, are probably going to be the things that are on the test. No worksheets, study guides, etc.
The only thing you need to worry about is taking good notes and keep and study them all until the final exam which is pretty easy and fair. He also is a very good speaker so most of the stuff will come to you very easy.
Professor Hollis is definitely the best. I highly recommend this class, even if you're not a journalism major. It's interesting and he's great at giving lectures. You also don't need the textbook. He goes over all the chapters in his lectures, so there's no point. Also make sure to go to class every day.
Dan Hollis is AMAZING. His tests aren't easy, but they're fair. Show up, pay attention to the lecture, take notes, study a bit. That's all there is to it. He's a great teacher, makes the lecture fun, really cares about teaching. 2 tests, 1 final, 4 (out of 8 assigned) 1-page essay-like assignments, and a 5-point short response every class.
Dan Hollis is awesome. He's funny, inspirational and had a huge knowledge about what he teach. You will never get bored during this 1.5 hours class. Dan also really helpful, so if you have any questions about his lectures, just stop by his office and he will answer it all
Dan is the man! Whenever I was confused about a topic we were discussing he was always willing to make sure I understood. Pushes his students to be the best they can be. Whenever his office door is open, I make sure to pop in and say hey.
By just taking Dan in 101 it made me want to switch my major to Journalism which is exactly what I did. His class is a constant reminder that I made the right choice. Fun times in class. Come to class and it'll be worth it. Dan is the man
If you ever have the chance to take Hollis, no matter what class it is, do it! He is great at lecturing without being boring and from my experience the lectures are easily remembered when taking the exam. He will push you to be the best because he cares about you and truly wants the best for his students.
Only 2 tests & a final, but they are kinda tough. There are 4 assignments & some readings throughout the course. The readings are short, but there are questions on the tests about them. Also you have a daily journal assignment worth 5 easy points. He's super funny & entertaining, so going to class isn't a chore. I would take him again if I could.
Class is extremely interesting and never boring. Come every day to receive 5 points from EASY daily journals. Take good notes, he'll always take time to repeat something you missed, so take part in class. Tests never contain anything not covered over and over again in class. As long as you take notes and study them, the class will be really fun.
Dan Hollis has been my absolute FAVORITE professor this semester! He has made my first journalism class at college so much fun and it is by far my all time most enjoyed class! I would recommend him to anyone and tell you nothing but good things!
Dan Hollis is wonderful! His lectures are extremely interesting and he takes the extra time to bond with students. He makes class fun and exciting and something you actually want to get up and come to. Best advice, participate and take notes for sure!
I believe he's one of, if not, the best professors I've had at Marshall. He truly cares about the students and will go over things multiple times to make sure you get it. He's also a hilarious guy and he is full of energy, so there's rarely a dull moment in his class. I'd definitely take him again.
Take this professor. He's a badass. He makes it extremely interesting and the class overall was pretty easy.
Dr. Hollis is humorous and lively and ensures student alertness. Be prepared to listen in class, as he discusses a lot in a rather quick pace. He does not post lectures online, they are all spoken. Although there is a lot of note-taking, homework is just a one page paper on a news story. He will randomly assign up to 8, but only 4 are mandatory.
Dan is amazing! If you show up to class and take notes you will easily get a B on the test if you study your notes. Lectures can sometimes be confusing but he's amazing and makes lectures fun/interesting.
Professor Hollis is one of the best professors Marshall has. As a journalism student I took his media literacy class and knew that staying in the journalism school was right for me. Dan is also my advisor and has given me lots of help with important decisions and classes. His lectures are really interesting and he deeply cares for his students.
Hollis for Prez
Everybody at Marshall loves Dan Hollis. He's charismatic, hilarious, and iconic on campus. He's fantastic at lecture and keeps students engaged in conversation. It's never boring in there. He's not very flexible with deadlines, but it's not a hard class to pass by any means.
Dan Hollis is known as, LITERALLY, the best professor at Marshall. This is a class that should be taken regardless of your major simply because he's so amazing. Lectures are unique, funny, and he tries to keep everyone involved. Very inspirational and highly respected man. If there's one class you should take at Marshall, its his.
Ok listen. Dan Hollis is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and he is absolutely my favorite professor in JMC. He is engaging, like the floor is his pulpit and all the words he's saying are the holy text of the media. I love this class, and I think everyone should take his 101 class regardless of their major. That's how important it is.
He is one of the most beloved professors you will find on campus. He gives everyone 5 free days to not show up but then afterward you essentially lose 5 points. He tests are not hard if you actually show up for class and engage yourself. Sit up front on the first day and you will get on his good side.
Every day Dan was energetic. You can tell he's passionate about what he's talking about. His class is pretty much all lectures, so be sure to take good notes because that's pretty much all you have to study. It's not an overly difficult class though, and the subject is interesting.
Dan is an amazing professors! There is no book nor power points. Lectures are very important the first test may be a little difficuly because you have to adjust to take proper notes solely on his lectures. The second exam and final should be know problem after getting the swing of taking good notes.
Dan is seriously the coolest guy. Hes hilarious and very enthusiastic. You must take notes in his class or you wont pass. He gives 3 tests with a cumulative final. He used to be a journalist so he has first hand experience. He wants everyone to learn and succeed. I would definitely take this class for a humanities credit.
The greatest teacher and mentor you'll ever have. 10/10
One of the best if not the best professor so far through my first year. JMC 101, Media Literacy, is probably one of the most enjoyable classes on campus you can take, and it isnt too hard either.
Dan Hollis is definitely the best professor I have ever had. I never want to skip class because his lectures keep you entertained and understanding the material the whole time, even at 9 am. Take good notes on what he's saying (he'll tell you what's important to know for tests) and you'll ace the class. I wish I could take this class again!
Dan Hollis is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. He was intriguing during lectures and if you show up to class you will pass. The class is easy and fun.
The most passionate and funniest teacher I have had to date at Marshall. Be warned, he does have a temper if nobody in the class wants to participate, he expects a lot of discussion. If you expect to do well on the tests, go to class.
Holliss class was truly fun, and when a class is fun the rating speaks for itself. I learned a great amount about very interesting subjects. Hollis is unique, there are no other words to describe him. He is an amazing professor, that I have recommended all my friends take. His hilarious lectures work, I highly recommend everyone take him.
He's hilarious, as long as you take notes on what he says, you'll pass.
Dan the Man Hollis, what can i say? Best, more hilarious, and attention drawing teacher at Marshall. You literally have to learn when he is lecturing. He makes each class almost like a performance. It is impossible to be bored in his class. Most importantly, you learn a lot of great material and you will be entertained.
Big personality and makes class easy to pay attention
Dan is possibly the coolest professor here. Hilarious, engaging, and super sharp. He desperately wants two things- for you to pay attention and for you to pass. Do NOT text during class. He hates that. He will literally give you the test questions if you show up and be mentally present. I made some awesome friends in this class and we all love him
Professor Hollis is great. Easy class. Show up and study for the tests and you will get an A.
Very funny guy and makes his lectures pretty interesting. As long as you show up to class and pay attention youll have no problem passing this class.
Dan Hollis is truly a gem. His lectures are definitely the most entertaining lectures I've ever seen. Take lots of notes! Participate! He gets furious when people are on their phone during lecture. Class content is very interesting but his lectures make it way more interesting. Definitely recommend taking Dan.
Dan hollis is an amazing man, and one of the best professors I have EVER had. He takes his lectures to a whole different level, and they are amazing. Sit in the front and participate, and he will love you.
Very good professor!!!!
Dan is truly an amazing professor. He keeps a rather large lecture entertaining and funny. Hollis can be loud but it keeps your attention. He doesn't like headphones or phones so watch out for that. But he makes the class time fly by. Easily one of my favorites.
The best professor I have ever taken. Hes very easy to like and is really funny. His class is just lectures but he makes it very entertaining. I have never dosed off in his class because he is always talking about interesting things. Time flys by in his class and I was actually excited to go to his class. Would DEFINITELY recommend!!
One of my favorite professors and also the most responsive to students-- seems to always be around and in a happy mood.
A genuinely amazing professor that cares about his students. The lectures were always extremely interesting and engaging. He is absolutely hilarious and easy to pay attention to. The tests can be a little difficult, but if you study everything from his lectures, you should be fine.
JMC 101 w/Hollis has been my favorite class at Marshall. It even inspired me to add a minor in media studies (after I wasn't allowed to change my MAJOR to JMC). You will never be bored in his class. He's not afraid to get crazy and hyper, and definitely not afraid to be himself. You will learn (and laugh) everyday that you're in his class.
The best Professor I had in 4 years. I got C for the class and I still think he is the best. I'm international student and I think I deserve this grade. He helped me a lot and he explains material so well. If i had opportunity I would take him again. I love that he accessible outside class and can help u understand material 1 on 1. Amazing person!
Taking JMC101 during the pandemic, all you had to do is watch the lectures online, take notes about them and do 3 discussion questions hidden within the videos. He gives you all the answers!!
Dan was such a king!! He gave us the option to attend the weekly lectures, or do a 200 word writing assignment each week. They were all super easy and opinion based. He graded pretty easy, and his tests went along directly with the videos he noted on YouTube. Literally love Dan, such a great guy <3
Hollis is a great professor and is very easy. You just have to attend class but theres also the option to write a 200 word engagement instead. You just have to watch the YouTube lectures and take really good notes in order to do well on the tests. If you take the notes and show up to class youll get an A/B.
Dan is the best professor. You don't really have to go to class because he posts videos of the lectures on blackboard, but he makes you WANT to go to class. He is so funny, and he really cares about his students, even stays in touch with them after graduating. He is the BEST, a certified summer boy, and his classes are the bomb
I had professor Hollis my freshman year, I am now a junior and still I am yet to get another professor like him. If I could tell every incoming freshman to take this class, I would. He dose not lecture while reading someone thing straight off the board; he memorizes it all and its a performance. You will never forget this man.
The man, the myth, the legend. I LOVE Dan Hollis. I highly recommend!
10/10
This is all coming from a Journalism major, but Dan Hollis is the gem of the program! His class is very fun to take and is pretty easy! No attendance policy except you will miss a 5 point journal entry each class you miss, so you lose the points. His lectures are fun and really keep the class engaged. If you need the credit definitely take this!!
My favorite professor! He has the most engaging class I have ever attended.
makes class fun and is a great guy
Awesome
I don't like Dr. Hollis teaching style. Lots of yelling and screaming, not because he's mad, but because he wants to exaggerate what he's talking about. 5 points a day for showing up to class and 4 tests throughout the semester for 100 points each, so you have to do well on those to pass. All questions come from lectures so you must pay attention.
This class was so much fun. It is more of a discussion based class, so instead of him lecturing the whole class time, you actually get to participate in the convo. Only grades are test and journals, however the tests are done outside of class and you can use your notes you have taken in class and almost every question comes from your notes!
Loved him! Literally the bomb!
Dan Hollis is one of the most influential professors at Marshall since 1999! I agree with that as I enjoyed his lectures. Likewise, he also puts videos of his lectures in case you miss a class or need to review for tests. At the end of the day, I recommend Prof. Hollis for those who need a humanities credit. (For CAM majors, it's a must.)
This was by far one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. Everything in the lectures is on the test, if you show up, engage yourself, and take notes, you will pass! Dan is great!!
Dan is one of Marshall's best professors. Attendance is worth 5 points every day and the rest of your grade is from tests. You are allowed to use notes on the tests and all the information from the tests is in the lectures. He is very good to get along with and cares for his students. This is a great class to take for a humanities credit.
His class is fun, but if you do not take good notes, you will not pass. Hollis is very engaging, and you will not be bored in his class.
Dan is honestly the best professor at Marshall. His lectures are nothing like you have heard before. Plus, America needs more media literacy. Take him any chance you get!
It's pretty clear everybody loves Dan Hollis! And for a good reason! He loves his job, makes lectures interesting and fun, and connects with students. My advice would be to take thorough notes and you'll ace the exams. There are daily writing prompts for 5 points--low stress. I took 101 for humanities credit and would highly recommend. Loved Dan!
By far the best professor I ever had. Always comes to class with 100% energy and makes class engaging and fun. Talks to every student and creates a connection. Delivers information in a way that feels less like work and more like conversation. I can't praise Dan enough! He knows what he's doing and obviously loves doing it. You won't find better!
Dan has been the best professor I have ever had. He was patient and understanding and overall just a great guy. I honestly feel like we became friends.
He basically gives the answers to every exam in class. Class is very engaging and fun. Love Dan, he's awesome.
If I could emphasize the "would you take this professor again?" button, I would. He is an amazing and caring professor if you can't tell from the other 200-some reviews. As a first-semester freshman, I couldn't of asked for a better class and professor to start my college years. He is probably one of few professors that has a 5/5 at Marshall Uni.
I like Dan but I don't like his Law and Ethics class. Make sure you take a lot of notes and even watch the videos to be successful on the exams, basically everything he says is important and could be on the test. Overall, would not take him again.
Be ready to take SO many notes. I used the video lectures as well to make sure I had good notes. But, all the exams are open note so it's so necessary. Dan is the most amazing guy, and he will help you and work with you if you need it. The content of Media Law is very hard, however Dan is not. You'll love this class if you work are and commit!!
Professor Hollis makes this class super engaging. While attendance is mandatory, the lectures feel more like conversations. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for exams. Highly recommend taking this class!
Professor Dan Hollis is the best! His energy, passion, and genuine care for his students make him truly one of a kind. He's engaging, approachable, and creates a fun, supportive environment where lectures feel like conversations. Patient and understanding, he connects with everyone and makes learning enjoyable. I love you Dan!!!
loved taking his class for a Humanities credit. It was engaging and professional. For this class attendance is taken but he does do a thing during the classes that are for a grade, and you can miss a few before it affects you. His exams are open note. If you miss a class he posts videos for you so you can get the notes for the exams.
Amazing professor and an amazing atmosphere. No nonsense assignments and actually educates his class on the course. If you want a great humanities experience and an avenue to an easy grade then take his class. He is also very understanding and will work with you. Probably one of the most enjoyable classes I have taken.
Really fun nice professor, you have three test open book and you have to make sure your notes are good because the test is heavy also he has a little activity every class that gives you points so that ca help you a little to boost your grade. I did not get a really good grade in any of the test even though I had notes but I pass the class 😭
