You'll never be able to make heads or tails of his diagrams.
Guy does not teach and reads straight from the book. Easily distracted with other topics instead of teaching CS. Unprepare for class, and ends up getting help from students when question arrises. Highly unrecommended for said class.
This guy teaches right out of the book. The tests are all out of the book and his grading scheme sucks (the final is 65% of your grade) He is mostly unhelpful and since he teaches straight out of the book you might as well self-teach yourself.
He is a really great person, but he SUCKS at teaching math. Many in the class are teaching themselves, and that isn't working for me, since I'm already a struggler when it comes to math. If you can teach yourself, you may survive. But otherwise, stay away
nice guy! not the best teacher though...
Hurley is a horrible professor. The only good thing about the course is the main textbook, which was extremely helpful. He also assigns a book by Kurzweil that is so lengthy and boring, it's torture. The homework is tedious, and the class is unhelpful.
Unhelpful, NEVER serious, this guy rades on a curve he invented, he doesnt care if no one gets an A. Makes an easy A couse so much work, assigns a boring book, never discusses anything, hes all over the place, its a wonder he's still teaching
Nice guy. Really helpful in reviewing homework problems. But from my experience you learn about 80% on your own and 20% from his lectures. He's not the easiest person to follow. If you are motivated you can do well in his class.
If you have any questions from the HW, he will go through it thoroughly. He is a bit unorganized, but very nice. He gives 3 multiple-choice test s (drops the lowest score) and a final - he also allows you to have a cheat-sheet. VERY helpful for the exams.
when he lectures it seems as though he reads strait from the book. unorganized, you will have to teach yourself about 70% of the time. he is a nice guy and a big sports fan. if you have trouble in math like me, dont take him....
Good teacher, teaches well. First half of class goes through homework. Lets students use notes on all tests and final exam. No quizes :)
I hate this professor...he took all my excitement to pursue computer science as a major...he himself told me to not even consider taking CS because he believed "it wasn't in my best interest" he is a horrible teacher don't take him
Class is rather boring. Not very explanatory, and dosen't have a lot of patience.Just reading the textbook by myself is a lot more helpful than this class.
mr hurley is not afraid of getting dirty (with chalk)
best math teacher I have ever had
Hurley not a very good teacher. FInal's EXTERIMLY HARD!! half of the class failed. and you have to read a pathetic book that doesn't even go with the lesson.. did not like him...don't take this teacher if your a beginner in computers or whatever you are!
He doesn't seem to be helpful on online class.Sometimes you needed to wait few days to get reply, which usually was really short. Tests while easy, had really confusing questions. I also didn't like the fact that we needed to read book The Age of Spiritual Machines thatWasNotReally relatedToTheClass
Talks and explains riduculously fast, can be clear when he wants which isn't often. Notes won't help, he talks to fast for them to make sense. Chooses test ? from bank so doesn't know what's on test so can't tell you what to focus on. Doesn't go over tests afterward so you don't know what you missed or why.
Professer Hurley has created a dynamic, introductory course in CS. Online, there were numerous ways in which to receive help as well as enrichment. There was an excellent balance between topical, social issues in CS (AI in particular) and "nuts and bolts" CI theory and principles. A COURSE WELL DONE!
He's a nice professor but he really shouldn't be teaching math. He was a spaz. Didn't explain things, made a lot of mistakes, which made my notes confusing. Tells you to skip something then puts it on the test. Attempts to cram way to much into one class session as a challenge to himself, but it's the students that really lose.
The people who said bad things about him are probably the same idiots who asked the same questions over and over in class. If you listen carefully, copy what he writes on the board, and go to every class, you'll get an A. It's open note and open book on the exams. I didn't study at all or do any of the homework, and I got an A.
After doing the homework,I made a "cheat sheet", like what to do with the calculator and what means what for each section of the book. Helped out alot during the tests, cause you will run out of time if you have to rummage through messy notes and the text for each question. Don't get too lazy just cause it's open book!
Ditto to the last review. Be sure to show up to class for notes on calculator use, but because the subject matter is pretty yucky, following in class is a challenge, but do a few homework problems for each section of the well written book and then using them for the open book tests should yield success.
GREAT Teacher!Always available for help during office hours or by email.Extremely fair and sincere about wanting students to do well.Definitely recommend him, especialy if you haven't taken a math course for a long time - he will help you through it.He has a great sense of humor too - which made the class fun!
Class is only for the self motivated. Not too hard if you know something about computers.
The course was well organized and I learned alot.
Good class overall. Hw assignments are relatively easy and exams are open note. The only real challenge was the programming final (which is very, very hard) but it only counts for 10% of your grade. Recommended for students who are already somewhat comfortable with computers.
really good teacher, i wish there were more people like him, unlike some idiots that think they can teach....
Professor Hurley is one of the best CS teachers I've had. Lectures were clear, he used plenty of examples to illustrate the point, compiled students' code in class, and his homework and tests reflected ideas taught in class. Open note exams. His only fault is that he might be *too* easy.
He is a really good professor. Programming is very tedious, but with the book it makes it easy. Open-Book tests make it doable also. Clear explanations - (as much as you can make a programming class)- Overall, he is a really good teacher, and even if he weren't, the book alone is enough!
I thought the outline of the class was great. Enjoyed the book and the Writing assignments for Ray Kurzweil.
You are a very good teacher, thanks
Thanks for being such an awesome professor. I look forward to more of your courses!
Very online class, I really enjoyed the class assignments
The whole class was taken online, we never even met. The Age of Spiritual Machines book got a bit off topic with future perdictions. The assignments were very specific and clear. When I was in need of help, he took quite a while to reply to my email -- one or two still remain unreplied.
I thought Prof. Hurley was an overall good teacher. I would definitely recommend taking his class. Easy A class if you know how to use a computer.
Well organized course and insightful material. Only minor complaint was that our grades and test scores were not posted in one place.
Great class, well organized, and he made the concepts very clear during lecture. I highly recommend his class, but make sure you know C language since that is used in most examples.
Good teacher, Great guy. Class was taught mostly from power-point. Assignments and exams were easy. Final a bit challenging. Would definitly recommend this prof.
cs3 on campus is a wonderful class and opens up avenues to different careers
very reasonable
He's a great guy, great teacher. Overall the class was easy, but the final was hard. He'll always help you out, and he's not pick as far as grading.
This professor seemed to really try hard to make statistics easy to understand. He used the TI 84 which helped a lot.
Tests are multiple choice, open book/notes, TI 83 etc. but unless you have time (ALOT of it) to teach yourself the material try someone else. Tests were way too long/complicated & if you can't keep up w/how to plug the equations into the TI 83 - becomes very painful very fast. Got an A on the 1st test then a 48 on the 2nd, lost hope & withdrew.
The TI 84 saved hours of time - thanks Prof Hurley
I thought it was a great way to do the course with the TI calculator. I got an A in the class and worked hard to get it.
This professor only teaches. if you don't bother him with any kind of personal stuff you be better off. he lets you use the T1 calculator on his multiple choice tests. but, he will not help you outside class.
The website at dhurley.com had everything that you needed to do spelled out. This was the best online class I took at SMC.
Dan was there for us at the end and studied outside his office with 3 or 4 of us. He also let me take the final at an odd time due to my schedule.
You have to be able to work on your own to take an online class, but this one was the best of the 4 online classes that I have taken at SMC.
Good teacher.
I thought the course was great. Very imformative and learned alot.
The class was what I expected and well-organized. The only feedback I have is that I wish there was a little feedback on homework assignments.
The class was a bit dificult. However, I still learned a lot from the class. What I did not like about the class was the PLD final. All of the exercises from the book where flowcharts. The final was mutiple choice. I would have done better if the final was a flowchart or the weekly assigmenmts from the book were multiple choice questions.
The course web site made everything clear. I took 2 other online classes at SMC and neither one was as clear as this.
Didn't like having to purchase 3 books. Didn't like the book Age of Spiritual Machines. Overall the class was cool. Easy to access exams. The Prof was helpful and easy to communicate with.
Professor Hurley was very helpful and responsive. Although the class was online I felt like I knew him.
GREAT ONLINE CLASS. I WOULD TAKE ANOTHER ONE FROM THIS PROFESSOR.
I am glad I took the class. I worked hard and got an A, but I saved lots of time because I did not hhave to drive to school.
Completely unqualified to teach a class that involves programming logic, and lazy to the point of incompetence. Over 10% of the questions on the final where flawed or definitely incorrect, but he couldn't care less, nor did he have anything to say in defence. He posted a grand total of zero times on the forum, and no hw feedback. Should be fired!!
I was happy with cs3 online. The PLD final was difficult, but Professor Hurley gave us extra credit on the exam that made up for it. I got an A in the class.
The course was clear from his web site and he graded the homework on time. The exams were at webct and the homework was through his email. He had his own gradebook at his web site.
I am glad I took the class with Professor Hurley. The calculator helps A LOT.
On line course. Gives extra credit. Home works get full grade if arrived on time. He communicates through e-mail only but responds very quick. Overall class is easy to understand and follow. Even if you not a computer person, this class will get you an A with sufficient amount of studying. Take this course.
This was a great class. Had a bunch of people to talk to online, always had help available...tests were hard though. But if you did the work like he said to (and not like you normally would, aka the bare minimum) it should get you the A.
I liked this class, far more than I thought! Hurley picks an interesting mix of assignments. I will never think about computers in the same way. Organized, fair grading, accessible. Recommend!
Do not take this teacher! He is not good! He is nice and funny, very personable...but simply not a good math teacher. Multiple Choice tests!!!
I enjoyed the class and got an A. The Alice programming was interesting.
I took an eight week hybrid class with Dan and came to know one thing. This guy wants you to get a good grade without you working your butt off. The homework is online and is marked quantitatively. Loads of opportunity to increase your grade and the exams were pieces of cake. EASY A!! Take him, man. He is cool and keeps you interested in the class.
excellent class
It was a great class. Since i didn't have alot of time and 2 jobs, having the class that required alot of reading but whatever time i wanted was great. Hurley was awesome, and the class was easy if you did your reading. A little effort will get an A.
Professor Hurley is GREAT! I highly recommend him. Everything is laid out for you and is easy to understand. Do your assignments on time and you'll get an A.
Quick to respond to emailed questions, clear instructions and expectations for the class.
The on-line version is very good. Clear instructions for HW are posted on the web. Lots of reading, each week would cover 3/4 chapters from the book-Discovering computers. Midterms are multiple choice and straight from the book. Be sure to purchase a "COMPLETE" version of the book, "intoductory" doesn't have the last four chapters.
EASY A! JUST DO YOUR READING, HW, AND TURN EM IN ON TIME..AND YOU'LL AUTOMATICALLY GET AN A ;D AWESOME PROF. MIDTERM AND FINAL ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE AND OPEN-BOOK. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.
pretty easy class. could have been more responsive.
This class is easy and only requires a couple hours of work each week. The midterm and final are taken directly from your textbook (which you can use during the tests). Weekly assignments require a couple chapters of reading and then a 1 page response. The hardest part is the solutions for ALICE (a program to teach you programming).
Excellent class for either a beginner, or as a refresher and update for an advanced computer user. The syllabus and course material were well excecuted, and stayed the course. The online portion was user friendly once you found everything. However, I think a more detailed description for getting started may improve the experience. Excellent class!
great teacher..you should take him..funny guy..easy A..open book on test..but better read cause it helps..GREAT !!!
Intelligent, Fun, Personable, Cool guy. Incompetent, unfair, horrible teacher. He couldn't teach a rock to sit still for the life of him. But, the other CS teachers at SMC aren't much better, with the exception of Stahl.
I learned alot from the online class and enjoyed it alot.
Great online class. I got an A.
I really enjoyed the online class. His website has everything clear.
The online class was interesting. I got an A. hw every week and 2 multiple choice exams online. I will probably take more online classes from Hurley.
Had to be the worst online calls I have ever taken, No instructions on what needed to be done for homework. Did not respond to any emails. Changed book in middle of semester. Was a big waste of time basically paid to read a book. Would not recommend taking any class with this lame instructor
Hurley is the BEST he makes programming fun. He understand students so he is always trying to help out them out. The test can be challenging if you do not study. There is alot of homework so you have to keep up.
Online class is ridiculously easy. First you read 200 page novel, then you use a sims like program to help you learn the basic methods of programming, plus tests are open book. I didn't learn all that much, but it was an extremely easy A.
He is one of the best Computer teacher at SMC. His step-by-step method is a real learning tool to understand all his materials.
He's really nice and funny guy. I did enjoy his vb class. His humorous lecture and clear concepts were really helpful.
Hurley is a very nice/clever/understandable/clear and enjoyable teacher. He really cares about you and is definitely a very good professor.
Horrible. Changes textbooks midway, provides no help at all.
He does cover a lot of topics and subjects, but all of these are easy to understand. He is very friendly and an easy grader and you can have a cheat sheet for your tests. I highly recommend him.
Online class. It's a bunch of reading. You read this very dry text book and then read this very interesting novel and write reflections on each chapter you read. The midterm and final are easy word for word out of the text book. The Learning to Program w Alice is pretty cool. It's easy to do and as long as you read, you';; do very well.
Prof. Hurley is a very lazy teacher. He does not seem to care much about his students. He may be the worst professor I've ever had. However, his classes are very easy, so I guess it all evens out.
Tells us what we need to know. Very helpful in understanding the overall picture. He's a good teacher and doesn't make it tough. I highly recommend him.
very good teacher
Professor Hurley is a great teacher. He makes the class intersting by having the whole class participate in discussions.
He is a GREAT teacher, and I'd recommend him to everyone. Take him, do his hw, follow his examples in class and u'll be almost guaranteed a C, study hard and u get an A.
Great teacher, very helpful and easy going. Assignments are not difficult, if you take good notes and attend class regularly you will do great. He is one of the coolest teachers you will ever have in this campus.
Great teacher. Interesting class.
I highly enjoyed my class a lot. Professor Hurley is a clear, concise teacher who thoroughly explains things. There's a lot of work to do, but if you stick by it and work hard you can get an A. I particularly enjoyed that the syllabus was laid out for us when we started so that we could plan in advance. Would definitely take a class with him again!
Great teacher. Gives syllabus that very clearly outlines the semester. Offers practice exams before real ones.
Even though I did fairly well, Mr. Hurley needs to get involved in online class discussions. I admit there was extensive reading, however, Mr. Hurley can help increase student interest in the subject by participating in the discussions. This will enrich student participation as well as their interests. One thing students hate is feeling ignored.
This teacher is really helpful. it's a fun class and very laid back. but he teaches in an interesting way. i would def. take him again. he loves what he does.
Nice guy with an easy class. Only problem is this guy is too laid back. His syallabus was outdated and he doesn't respond to e-mails quickly, so be ready to wait a couple days and send numerous messages before you get a response. However, he did fix all problems and reply to messages eventually, and the work was easy and sometimes fun. Recommended!
Very detailed delivery and emphasizes hands on. Upon completion, if you fail his class then you just went on for the joy ride. RATING: A
Very good teacher. In the event I have to take online classes I learned more than ever.
I loved this teacher. he goes over EVERYTHING for the test. You have to work hard for your own grade, but you can ask him ANY question and he will help you out. he wants his students to succeed, you can get an A
THIS CLASS IS SUPER DOOPER EASY A.
Great teacher...always there when you need him!
I took an online course and it was great! I enjoyed the challenges and the discussion were fun.
Online Class: Super easy A. Expect no help or feedback. Students had fights and used profanity and he never noticed or said anything. Main text “Age of Spiritual Machines” has nothing to do with CS. Take only if you want the A and do not want to know about CS.
Awesome professor. You must take him if you are required to take CS. He is very flexible, just don't talk in class while he is lecturing or he will get upset at you. Very laid back, willing to help others who do not understand what he's teaching during class.
online class Great professor! Helpful and comprehensive with students. The best professor on CS department.
Online class...easy A. just follow the directions and you should be fine. he doesn't really respond to questions though, but this class is so self-explanatory you shouldn't need to ask him questions.
I absolutely loved him. If I had a question, emails were prompt and helpful. I would recommend to all who want to expand their computer skills.
The online class is very straight fwd.You read the textbook and take a mid term for the 1st half then the other half is on the final. There's really not much Involvement by the Prof. but if you have questions he is always there to answer emails. You are also required to read "Age of Spiritual Machines" Class is easy if you keep up with the weekly HW.
one of the best teachers! just do all the assignments and exams and I'm pretty sure you'll get an A
online class, prof very quick to respond to questions. not much interaction with him, though. syllabus very helpful, clear, and straightforward.
Great Teacher!!! Have had other classes with him and did excellent job there too! Only take this class online if you are self-disciplined and motivated in this field.
The class is very straight forward and very easy to understand. The teacher is always there to answer any of your questions. It is wonderful being able to learn more and more about our machines
Hurley is one of the top 5 best teachers I had at SMC. he is great. recommended.
Dan Hurley is a cool guy! a little on the hyper side, but that means the class is always fun. CS3 is an easy class. Some essay-type writing is required (easy grading, though), and some simple programming (in Alice). The tests are straight from the publisher bank--practice at the books website for an easy A. I recommend this professor to anyone!
Took this class online during summer. The material was interesting - there was a LOT of it but mostly pretty easy, just time-consuming. We got NO feedback from the prof at any time, unless we asked for it via email. Still it was fun to interact with other classmates online and we got help that way. Got an A even tho I skipped the last 2 HW's.
The best professor Ive ever had, hands down. I never met a professor who loved teaching so much-- He is able to explain, to less brilliant people than himself and to me that's truly amazing. I used to hate the subject and now it's on
A great teacher. He's clear and doesn't try to fool you with the tests. He wants to see you do well.
Awesome teacher. Really into the subject matter. Makes programming really interesting and fun to learn (I was skeptical before I took this class).
Instructions are clear. Homework is interesting. Great class format. Take him, you won't regret.
take him, please! One of those classes that are extremely easy without sacrificing good education. You will get an A, yet learn a LOT from this class. His tests are easy yet very educational. His class is VERY well structured and organized. Just do the hw and reading every week and take 2 exams total. I recommend this class, definitely.Great teachr
What a breeze for an online class. Just do the assigned hw (first half of course consists of reading and submitting your response) then the other half is making small animations (even if you don't do it perfectly, you will most likely get all the points). There are 2 tests (midterm and final)from the textbook. (you can find answers on wikipedia!)
Great Teacher Easy A! Fair grader, no tricks!
Great Teacher Easy A! Fair grader, no tricks! Interesting class as well.
Easy A, recommended professor
Horrible teacher, should not be teaching an computer class. Half the the time he loses himself and a student is the one who has to explain to him what to do. Refuses to answer emails no matter how important they are. Does the least amount of work possible
an excellent teacher, knows how to teach the material clearly, no confusion, tests are fair, great sense of humor and personality in and outside of class...no worries
Not easy A, more like an easy B, but maybe that's because I'm not a CS major. Took this class for extra units and was recommended for a BSN program I'm trying to get into. Everything except mid-term and final were easy. Thought it was a good online class though, very clear and organized.
TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS IF YOUR MOTIVATED, YOU WILL GET AN A
Take him whenever you get a chance. He's the best here.
Great class! I increased my knowledge about computers systems and emerging technologies in eight quick weeks. I highly recommend taking this class from Professor Hurley because his lesson plan is manageable and his course assignments and materials are interesting and thought provoking.
if you want an excellent and thorough teacher, take this guy. I found him to be the best teacher on campus. He knows what he's talking about, he teaches with clarity, and there are no surprises on his tests. He is challenging.
Wrote everything in detail on the board and was not lazy at explaining things. Regular guy who keeps it like a regular atmosphere in the class. Shoots straight from the hip and is not extremely formal about class atmosphere.
The class was challenging and very informative. I feel it broadened my understanding of computers and filled in all those gaps of knowledge that had developed over the years. Prof. Hurley was available and fair. I'm looking forward to his class next fall.
had a good experience in his online section. interesting material, professor available, organized. Recommended!!!
Great teacher! Took his online class in the Spring 2010 semester....and simply amazing! Very helpful and easy! Highly recommended!
I liked that the Prof got in the discussion only when we could not help each other. I loved his choice of videos, which provided food for thought along with the technological lessons. I love that the books he chose will serve as reference for problems to come. He worked us hard and we learned a lot. He ranks tops of all my college instructors.
Stimulating class .. eye opener regarding the advancements made using technology. Professor Hurley brought the real world into our online class with TED discussions. Good Job Professor Hurley.
Class was fairly easy. I would recommend it to anyone. Just turn in homework on time, write comments in the online discussion at least once per week and do all the assignments. Mid-term and final were easy because you were allowed to use the internet and most of the questions were posted online anyways. Easy A if you try.
Took CS3 online and got an A!!! I wish all my classes were online with CS!! The class is very clear on what you need to do and it was my first online class. If I can do it you can too :)
The class is essential for those getting really into the I.T. field, it has lots or terminology and solid background. I recommend this class, and I'm a Desktop Support Engineer.
Professor Hurley is easy if you work hard in the class. He cares about what the students get out of the class.
Took his course online.Used several different work books for the course, which kept it interesting. Exams were a little tough but very fair grader. If you keep up with the homework, will not affect overall grade. Great professor! :)
online class. easy assignments that are mainly to show him youve watched/read the HW. Alice work is tricky. DO THE HW and ON TIME and youll get an A. terrible midterm/final. looks easy but takes multiple choice and open book to a new extreme. fast grader, but doesnt really give feedback. id definitely take him!
This was my first online class and I was very impressed at how we were led through the semester. The professor was organized and expectations were clear. The mid-term and final were tough. I enjoyed the class and learned, too.
Great class! The information which the professor choose to lecture on was very informative as well as motivating. I enjoyed his class and would take any computer class with professor Hurley because of his love for information and computers.
This online class was a lot of fun. The professor was always there when help was needed. He even introduced me to Zorin OS, which is a great operating system. Participating in the Threaded Discussion was very helpful. The books were easy to read and working with Alice was entertaining. Imagination is required. Overall A++ class.
Highly recommended. I am a better person for taking it.
Excellent professor, engaging and offers excellent material that educates and inspires.
(online) class was good. I use computers every day but I still learned quite a bit. Felt the teacher was fair. If you do the work, the grade will reflect it.
For someone who was "told" she would never be able to master basic computer programming I did it! With material presented in a very disarming way I learned quite a bit and thought not perfect I learned enough to begin to understand the logic involved in programming thought. Material presented is very confidence building.
Online class; question's were answered promptly; Exams were clear and used the text book terms; projects/homework were from book projects and lectures - clear enough to not have any problems. OVERALL Awesome teacher!
Great starter class for computer science.
Really, really, ridiculously, stupidly easy online 8 week class. Great class for introductory programming. VERY attentive professor, EASY assignments, EASY projects. Just do the work, read whatever he assigns you, and participate in the forum. Take the online 8 week class, otherwise you're going to be agonizingly bored in a full semester.
Online 8 week class. Very well organized. Very attentive teacher. Fair work and assignments. Easy A if you do the work. Reccomended.
Very well organized and very attentive teacher.(Online 8 week class)
Very easy class! Guaranteed A if you do all the work. Books frequently used get them all because the homework is from the book. Tests are very straight forward no tricky ones. He is very organized and quick at grading so no agonizing waiting period for your grades and you know where your at. Online class very enjoyable.
The class is easy although, it's wise to keep up with the reading when taking the exams. The professor grades the homework quickly. I like the fact that he doesn't micromanage your homework. So if he requests 300 words in a report, you can actually write it in 250 as long as you get the point through. He grades on quality rather than quantity.
This was the best class I have taken so far at SMC (CS3) and Professor Hurley is an amazing instructor who actually cares about what he's teaching. I love computers and technology and I actually learned a lot more than I thought I would. I look forward to taking another class he teaches in the future, he's great.
Extremely organized and helpful. Syllabus was very clear and well constructed, anticipating every possible opportunity for student confusion and addressing it up front. Graded work within time frame stated and responded to individual inquiries quickly. Great experience! (12 week online)
Online CS3 I got an A easily. Weekly required writings. Second half focuses on Animation programming, Open book tests. Text is dry, but thorough. There is an electronic version which makes pdf searching easy for the test. Very interesting and quite enlightening videos. Prof. is well organized, Not very involved but there if you need help
Took this class online for 12 week. 5 exams total, 1 midterm which is 50 questions and final which is 75 questions and the other 3 is 50 questions. class is very straight forward. professor Hurley is very organized and he knows what he wants. writes are 300 words which is mot bad. I recommend this class!!!!!!
Take this class if you need intro to Computer Systems (CS:3) at SMC. The professor will help you achieve the best grade possible! I turned in all the work and got an A. Honestly, he has to be the most insightful computers professor at SMC!
Easy online class, just read the syllabus and do what the professor asks and you'll get your A. I just wish there was less videos of TED, and more emphasize on reading the book. The videos are mostly about Robots, which is not my field of interest. Overall it's a fun class, considering that it's online; and he is so quick in grading the assignments.
Professor Hurley is great!!! Took him online and he was always available for dicussions did not understand something. He also encouraged to visit him during office hours if we needed additional help. GREAT CLASS although ALICE was a bit confusing at times, DEF. REC. this Professor and class to anyone looking into this field!
if you want an easy A along with learning some valuable information then you MUST take this class! I highly recommend this professor, i took cs3 online with him and its guarantee you will get an A or B if you do all your work. You can also use the internet during exams. easy peasy.
I took CS3 online with him. The class is very easy. If you know anything about computers you'll get an A. Alice is tricky if you don't read the book but once you get it, then you get it. I met the Prof once too and he's a very intelligent guy that is willing to help. Midterm and Final are online with internet access= A in class.
You need get the books one for the tests and one for alice. if you put in the work and do all of the homework exactly like he says, you will get the grade equal to what you put into it. IT WAS very time consuming but a lot of fun, because Alice is not offered offline.
There are no lectures for online classes. None what so ever. You need to learn everything on your own. If you are new to programming do NOT take this teacher. He offers very little help, and when he does its very brief.
Easy class if you do all the work assigned on time.
Great Professor! He does not overload you with work even though I took the 8-week online course. Everything is explained pretty clear and if you have questions he will definitely answer :)
He's not the best at explaining things and gets very sidetracked, but he doesn't give hard assignments either. If you want to learn a lot, this is not the teacher for you, but he's an easy A and a fun professor.
Pretty easy class.Even though the two tests are open book, they were still very time consuming because you had to search for every answer. The alice program was pretty lame too to say the least.Overall,i think if you're interested in the subject of computers, you should take this class. This was an extremely boring class to take!
There are no lectures at all. For the first 7 weeks of class you watch videos and write your thoughts for hw pts. One midterm and one final only. You teach yourself. Easy A. Highly recommend his online course.
Amazing class! Deff recomended
The most easiest and nicest professor I ever took in my academic life... Close your eye and just take him. He is super chill and very easy for A's
Great class especially for beginners like me! Very happy I did not take online as I would have been lost. Now pursuing future programming classes which is a nice surprise to me. Class discussions were funny and HW was easy(always thoroughly explained prior to doing the assignment). Midterm and final are open book. Easy A if you do HW & participate!
Course was straightforward. Read the whole text book but the midterm and final are based on a few chapters; tests were modeled after book so relatively easy. Hours of TED videos every week that became a little exhausting but most were interesting.
Got full credit on all assignments even though they weren't anything good. As long as you do the assignments you're good. Never read the text book. Googled every single question on the exam and got A's on all them. Great class if you're dedicated but also don't want to try hard! I recommend taking him for sure
Hurley is a very straight forward professor. His class is very easy but as the student, I felt like the course work, i.e. the video lectures were kind of tedious at times. I was slightly disappointed that we did not do more programming. I would recommend taking this class in the summer.
Very Informative Class if you want to learn about the evolution of the technology over the past 60 years or so. Definitely gives you the pulse beat of current state of Information Technology(IT). Definitely recommended. The TED Talks are GREAT!
Easy A class if you study and do all the homework and use internet during tests. TEST WERE HORRIBLE. For example, one test asked what was the most recent Windows. I said Windows 8 and got a point taken off. When i asked for credit, Teacher said it would be considered if it would make a difference in my grade. BEWARE
He is one of the best Prof. at SMC. open book midterm and final. I love this professor and really helpful. do all you HW and Do your best on exams. you will get an A. His is very knowledgeable must attend his class. Best of luck
I admire this professor because he grades tough. If you are a person who needs someone to motivate you to doing well in a class or if you want to get an easy A, this class is not for you. But if you are willing to work hard, you should get at least an A or a B.
Very helpful teacher emailed him with every problem i had and would always email me back immediately. Overall AMAZING TEACHER and CLASS!
Weekly homework is on Ted Talks and a couple basic programming tasks. EASY. Never read a chapter of the book; just used it to complete midterm and final. Didn't really learn anything new about computers, but it was easy A.
Prof. Hurley is very laid back and relaxed. He has been at SMC for a while now and really knows the course material backwards and forwards. Lectures tend to diverge sometimes, but always back on point quickly. Show up to class for the coding sections and you'll be writing code faster than you think. Great Professor!
Took his class over the summer. Tests and lectures are right out of his books. He's although he does give off the mad scientist feel when he gets excited about the subject. If you care about your grade, then he cares. Be present and work hard, he will always try to help. Important class if you're new to comps, a bit redundant if you're proficient.
I took CS 3 online and it was very easy. The class is laid out week by week and the assignments are very easy. You can work weeks ahead if you felt like it. most of the exam answers can easily be found online and you are allowed to use the internet for exams. Very easy course.
Basically a self-taught class, all online. Pretty easy grader and is generous with extra credit for well done homework assignments. Only issue I had with the class is the Midterm and Final are Pearson tests. If you don't agree with the book or have experience in the field, you may not do well on the tests. The book is an absolute must have.
Yeah there's a lot of Ted Talks that are time consuming, but there's nothing really to complain about. It's way better than a lecture. Just do the work and take the exams and you'll get an A. The material is simple if you're part of the tech generation, and if not, most answers for the exam are found online. Take him, I don't regret it
Easiest class you can take. There is no way you can fail this class unless you don't do the work assignments (I failed to do some). I received a B for his class. Took his class for Fall 2014.
I'm not a coding person. Actually I scared to writ codes until I took CS3 with him. Although, I'm not a coding person yet I never scare about that. I had a great experience in Threaded Discussion. He is a wonderful professor; he never lets you down. He is ready to help when you need it. Because of him, I like online courses now. Thank you Professor
I recommend ! He was very easy with grading assignments. He even said to relax and just try your best. That's honestly all you have to do.
Sometimes it could be confusing to understand instructions but he actually is a pretty fair grader when it comes to the assignments. There are a good amount of assignments but never really hard. Test are a bit long (150 questions) but there are only a few tests in general, all in all a pretty good online experience.
GREAT and SUPER NICE professor!! He provided me lots of extra credits and got an A although I skipped 1 assignment!! His lecturer was straightforward and all class materials were so fun to do!! Highly recommend him!!!!!!!!!!
Great teacher! Always on top of every thing. Very professional and respects his students. Easy to talk too, and gives great feedback!
This is a good class to get an idea about the possibilities of computing. The assignments consist of writing a response to 10 TED videos a week, 2 large exams mostly from the book, watching the movie classic 2001 and do some super basic programming with ALICE. I had a lot of fun in this class. It convinced me to study Computer Science.
I took Professor Hurley's class in the semester and let me just say I do not regret it! The Ted talks were interesting and he is a clear and very easy going teacher! Would definitely take another one of his classes!!
Amazing class. Instructions are very clear and video lectures are very engaging (Ted talks). This class is a very pleasant introduction to computer science. Would recommend.
Wish there had been more time for the final exam. Other than that, I loved this class and learned a lot. Can't wait to take more computer classes in the future!
Really easy A, took it on ground. He shows you exactly how to do the homework in class. one midterm and final both OPEN BOOK! really fun class doing some basic Alice programming. always there at office hours willing to help you with anything from helping with your homework to helping fix your computer. Best teacher in SMC period.
He's a really nice professor. He makes the class as easy as you want to make it. If you give enough effort you will get an A. Definitely engaging.
He is always kind and helpful. If you have problems doing the assignments, he will take time explaining after class without getting annoyed. He is so patient in class as well. He makes the lessons fun and inspiring. He gives good grades.
He is kind, he is cool, and he is genius! Take his class. P.s. better use pdf-version textbook on midterm and final.
Took his online Computer Science Intro. I've never been very technologically inclined, but I ended up getting an A. I found the ALICE programming to be rather challenging but he was always available for questions in the group discussions. I'm looking forward to taking more CS classes in the future.
Honestly expected this class to be hard but it was one of the easiest A's this semester. Recommend this class to everyone with any major.
This class is straight forward, clear guideline on how to do your stuff and how many grades you will get for each. Therefore each week you study a chapter and do a programming assignment. you have a forum each week to participate which you can ask questions from your peers and that's it. Honestly I expected more interactions but it was self study!
Taking the class online over summer along with an online English 2 class, very easy in comparison, can do weekly assignments in a day, ALICE is fun, TED talks are a mixed bag, if you know how to use the internet the midterm is easy. Can find the book in PDF form free easily via Google (title+.pdf). Wish I could take him for CS50.
He's a serviceable and competent professor, but that's about it. CS3 is easy except for the tests which ask questions based on a book that is so dry, dense, and boring that it's hard to absorb the details of the material to really feel prepared for the tests (which are open book basically because all the questions are overly specific)
Hurley is a great teacher who makes it easy for students to succeed. It's on you to do your work and try, but he does a great job explaining and being available for extra help.
Dan has a very structured online course. Ten videos with reactions per week, midterm and final both had 150 questions which he allows you to use Google. One Alice assignment per week. Easy A. However, the TED videos get quite lengthy so turn on the transcript and read through it! I am taking him for CS50
Super smart and super funny.
Professor Hurley is very straightforward with his reasonable expectations (ie. the program works). The challenge is learning how to program and getting the assignments done in time each week. If you're new to programming, give yourself time to read, watch the videos and understand what is going on. If you wait until last minute, it won't work.
It actually is my first time reviewing such thing and I don't do so because i'm lazy. Just wanted to write a review that his lecture was clear and good. Was a nice class to review my stuff and learn some new concepts.
Answers all your questions during lecture. Sometimes might deviate from the topic but everything you need to learn is usually covered in lecture. Pretty funny too!
He's a nice guy but offers 0 extra-credit. The assignments are pretty easy but can get lengthy if you take him in the summer/winter. he gives you these ted talk videos to watch, which do get kinda boring. they're two exams and all the answers could be found online (he says in the syllabus you can use the internet for help.)
I took him online and I regret it. I love online courses and overall, it seems like a straightforward class but beware his late assignment policy. Miss 2 or more in a row, you will be dropped without a warning. Nowhere does it say this on the syllabus. It even says you can hand in assignments 2 weeks late yet I was dropped without any courtesy.....
Best professor I've had this semester! He actually cares and is respectful to all his students. If you're falling behind and ask him for help, he helps you get back on track. There's no reason why you shouldn't pass his class.
He is the best professor I have had in SMC. I cant even explain what a great person he is! he hates to be the center of attention, but deserves too! hes the best! class is great do the work and you will do great! very fair when it comes to grading! take him!!
Great Teacher. Easy and fun. Really cares about you learning. Definitely take him if you can. Nice guy. I would take him again.
Very well organized on-line class! You won't miss anything because the structure of the class is so smooth and it is so easy to understand! Very interesting topics and cool stuff for computer intro!! I enjoyed the class very much!! I higly recommend the class!
Too easy
Professor Hurley was a delight to take. The brief introduction to computer programming and computer concepts was easy to digest in a short summer session. The class consists of very light/basic programming, responses to TED presentations, discussions and two exams. Great professor, clear and concise. Would definitely take him again.
He has a fun class. Homework assigned once a week (If you can do them you are set for the tests). First test is OPEN BOOK. He is smart, caring, accessible out of class, and teaches well. Will be an easy A if you have any programming experience.
He is one of the best teachers that you could ever have. He is so clear. He can help you if you have any trouble in your work.
Took his online class for 2018 Fall and gotta say that all the assignments and quizzes are straight forward. You have to utilize all the power points and readings he assigns but he allows you to use the Internet to search for answers. A lot of reading and assignments but they are easy to complete. You can use online thread and email him questions.
Amazing!! This was my first CS class, and the material is entertaining and thought provoking. The structure-- 9 ted talk videos/write a short response, a quiz, and a short assignment every week. His grading system is extremely fair--you do the work, you get rewarded for it! It's not an easy A, but a doable A. Highly recommend!!
I really felt that this course was well structured. I have had other online classes before and this was certainly the best so far. The exams were on line open book and using the Internet was permitted during the exam. I really felt I learned a lot about programming. Thank you Professor Hurley.
Test and quiz material are not covered in the lecture material. Be ready for surprises.
Tough class but great professor. His teaching style is easy to understand. Highly recommended. He is a genius!!
Made my second time taking C make sense. Definitely the best professor I'll have.
Best professor. Take him without thinking. He cares for his student.
I took him for C programming after haven taken Java programming and AP Comp Sci years ago. It was easy to get back into programming, this time in the context of C instead of Java. Recommended for both beginner and experienced programmers alike.
Took online course for CS 50. Pretty good course, only complaint is that he uses CarlH videos as a teaching supplement which is kind of creepy.
Professor Dan Hurley is a joke of an educator. Someone could literally program a bot to take his place. He would respond to student's inquires for guidance with the exact text he put in the original assignment page. I will, with confidence, never employ this professor again. I would go to another school for the same course just to avoid him.
He is super nice, so helpful always. If you don't understand, he will help you without making you feel like you shouldn't have asked at all. Love his class. Would definitely take again.
I've never felt less supported by a professor. Responses to emails or class discussions are short and unhelpful, bordering on rude. Prof Hurley does not want to be bothered by students. Prepare to self teach everything. Textbook is awful. You wont learn much. Avoid if possible bc you will regret it once you move onto higher level cs courses.
Dan is the best professor I've had so far! He is passionate and really cares about students. His exams are extremely fair and the curve is very generous.
This guy is so annoying. He doesnt respond to emails very well. Its just the same copy paste message. If you ask him for help hell just send a copy pasted message that helps nothing. He changed the way he graded programming assignments right towards the end of the course for no reason without warning. You basically are in your own.
I am currently in this class. He is the best and clearest prof I ever had in a computer related class. He makes the subject understandable and clear.
I have taken numerous online classes and this was the most well organized so far. It is really well structured and Professor Hurley responds to emails amazingly quickly. It seems like he is online all the time. I give him an A+. Best online class ever. Professor Hurley even helped me get a loaner Chromebook from SMC.
Professor Hurley's CS3 class was wonderful. As a student beginning a path in Computer Science, I am unbelievably thankful to have had such a broad, supportive and interactive introduction to the subject. He was also very attentive and available. The exams given were extensive, but if you study, you'll be fine. Thankful for a great semester!
It's clear with the way assignments are worded that Professor Hurley understands not every student taking the course will continue in this field, and are merely taking it for credits. There's optional, more difficult assignments for those who plan on going further in the subject. Remember, it's just an intro class. Don't take it for granted!
If this is a required course, and you don't care about CS, go ahead take him, it's a good option. His problem is he doesn't focus on CS, he literally says you can just skip every CS assignment by copying the textbook and getting 7/9. You'll have 9 tedtalks a week to watch and react, a discussion with so many rules and a programing assignment.
Dr. Hurley is a great instructor. The lectures were great, and informative. Passionate about topics, and genuinely cares for you to understand CS theories.
As others have mentioned, he's very bot-like. By which I mean his responses are short, repetitive, and unhelpful. Pretty easy class luckily, so I can't really complain, however, if Ted talks aren't your thing, pick another professor.
Highly recommend. His assignments were a mix of TED Talk responses, a couple papers giving your opinion on a video, and some C language Programming. If you at least try to prepare for the quizzes and final exam, you WILL get an A. If you don't try, then I don't know.
I have taken numerous online classes and this is easily the most well organized. If you have any questions, Professor Hurley will get back to you really quickly; well under 24 hours. You need to watch interesting Ted talks each week, write a number of C programs, , and take a midterm and a final. Definitely the best online class I have ever taken.
If you're a student that really needs professor support this is not your pal, he is very short when it comes to his responses. Furthermore, he assigns homework in little regards to computer science and mostly towards the technology industry. Don't waste your time and hurt your transcript .
This professor is one of the best professors you could ever have. He is willing to help his students to the full max! Enjoyed his class and am looking forward to taking another class.
I have taken many online courses, but this one was not it. Gave zeros for absolutely no reason and wouldn't really have an explanation. The assignments are pretty difficult since he doesn't teach it and only gave a model where it would still be unclear. ITS CODING! Was really time consuming and pointless. Mainly, you don't learn anything!
This professor is such a great one, he is always there for you, if you have questions , he will reply almost immediately , he will guide you through very clear during the course , simply amazing professor. I am looking for to take another class with him.
One of the best Professors I have ever had. If you have the chance, don't think twice and take him! :)
Professor Hurley is very understanding and if you email him with any problems you have he'll help generously. But his class is pretty tough, you have to learn a lot on your own and the class work starts off easy and becomes really difficult. This is a good class but be prepared to learn a lot on your own.
This was the best online course I have ever taken. The structure of the class was really clear. Any questions I had the Professor got back to me within a couple of hours by email. Also, the homework was graded quite quickly. I wish all online courses were so well structured.
Great professor always grade within the same day which is rarely seen. He is always gonna respond to your emails. he makes us write a lot of assignments on paper. The only annoying thing is u can only reply to a discussion from mon-wedn and then Thur-sat to receive full 2 points . I always forget since the due date is Saturday.
Be prepared to handwrite essentially everything. Assignments take much longer to complete because typing is not allowed.
Not the class to take if you want be taught anything by an actual professor. You're going to hand writing everything, usually 900 hand written reaction notes, a 300 word overview of your home assignment, plus the actual homework assignment ( c programing), and he sometimes throws a test in there too. A LOT OF BUSY WORK!
Dr Hurley wants everyone to succeed. He will help you as far as is reasonable, and as far as you let him. You'll have to put in some work, but it's a good time.
I work in tech for years with many certifications, just looking to finish a degree. I regret choosing this professor, as he seems to be paranoid of AI instead of making it a skill to learn, and counters this by making every assignment handwritten. Expect endless busy work, outdated material, and 9 weekly YouTube/TED talks for 25% of your grade.
Great class that encouraged students to think morally and ethically about technology.
First of all, Professor Hurley, usually grades homework with them a couple of hours. I have never seen anyone else do this and an online class. There are a lot of TED talks to watch and many of them deal with artificial intelligence. Professor Hurley seems to think that this is the most important thing that is happening in technology.
