Dan is awesome. He's a funny guy, his classes are better than I'd suspect most other WTE classes are. He's a relatively easy grader (don't think he gives much below B-'s) Definitely recommend him for WTE
Dan is a great reasonable guy who is probably one of the best WTE teachers at NYU. He's young enough to still identify with students, but is very intelligent, and obviously has many ideas. His classes were mostly entertaining, and I'd definitely recommend taking WTE with Dan.
Dan is a nice guy who wants his students to do well. He makes the class as interesting as it probably can be. His grading seems fair and not too tough. Although, I think that he lacks good constructive criticism, he didn't offer much advice during the drafting process of the essays. Overall though, he made WTE a positive experience.
Daniel Kellum is by far the best teacher I've had so far at NYU. He is the most lax grader I've come across and he has one of the more interesting WTE classes around. If you ask anyone, they usually dread their WTE teacher/class, however, Dan was able to create a fun and amiable atmosphere for all of his students. Definitely take him!
Dan is probably one of the best WTE teachers. He's fun, makes jokes, not so strict about handing in exercises, and a relatively easy grader. Although he did miss my appointment with him and made it nearly impossible for me to reschedule, I still recommend him if you have to take WTE. The course sucks but his class was fun.
He is Awesome. If you can have a chance to take his class, then do it. He makes WTE interesting, as opposed to other professors who from what i hear are boring.
great teacher, so funny, and made the class interesting. not so helpful when you meet with him one on one but not such a hard grader either. take him if you can!
WTE is probably the most dreadful course I had this semester, but it was the class I most looked forward to attending. Dan is very funny and tries to make the atmosphere as comfortable as possible. Not the easiest class, but a lot of fun, and he is a very fair grader!
I am so glad I had WTE with Dan. He was really nice and very sarcastic about a lot of things, which made his class much more interesting. I definitely recommend him. If you have to take WTE with anybody, take it with him. Make sure you put hard work and effort into your papers and if you do..you'll get the grade that you deserve.
couldn't understand any of the assignments he gave out. he grades ridiculously hard too.
I 100% recommend Dan. The course intself is difficult but Dan is completely there for the students. He is reasonable, he's fun, he's the best WTE teacher ever. If you want a proff. who is going to teach and help you, then Dan is the guy.
Dan is very funny, and very understanding. Over time, however, it seems as if he has become a harder grader. On the first progression, nearly everyone got a B-, with a few B's and maybe one B+. Sometimes, his instructions are hard to understand--perhaps its best not to understand them (the kid who ALWAYS sleeps got the highest grade!)
I agree with the bottom rater. All the previous ratings just don't add up. Yes, Dan is funny. But it seems as if he grades much harder than I'd expect. He's really hard to get help from (he says he doesn't want to "hold our hands"). He ALWAYS negatively criticizes our papers--you'd have to be lucky to get at least one positive comment.
He's not exactly the easiest grader, but any advice he gives you is incredibly constructive. You only get one meeting with him per essay, so schedule them as late as possible (after you've finished draft 2.) Don't try to **** your way through the essays- he can see right through it. Very sarcastic, not too strict. Ended up with an A-
Lots of reading, and thinking, but he can really open your eyes, if you have a moderate interest in the subject. Has a lot of good stuff to teach you. Also he's a pretty cool guy. Don't miss class!
He is such a hard grader. Its ridiculous. He only gives negative comments and he does not like to help. He does not make you a better writer. Do not take him.
He is not an easy grader but if you listen to his lectures and attend class you'll improve. You might have to work really hard to get the grade you want, but he has a good sense of humor and his class is really enjoyable.
By far the best professor I've had at nyu so far. Very funny, interesting and makes this horrible class actually enjoyable. I definitely recommend him
He is not helpful at all. He has no office hour and refuses to provide extra help to anyone. That is still fair I guess but still I think I will learn better with a more helpful professor. His grading is harsh. I would not recommend him in general.
This class was by far the most useless and arbitrary thing I've taken at NYU. Unnecessarily hard and obscure grading. Ended the class with a B- which is the only non A/A- I've gotten in 4 years at NYU. Just speaks to how backward he is as a professor and WTE is as a course. COMPLETE WASTE OF MY TIME.
Took Int'l Writing with him. He didn't have meeting hours so I emailed him every time I have a question. If you want to get a good grade in his class, just know this: think in conceptual terms when writing the essays. Also, read every essay gone over in class carefully.
He did not take his students seriously at all. Class always started 10-15 minutes later, ended 30-45 minutes earlier. Since he never replies emails from students, it was extremely difficult for students to contact him. Overall, I didn't learn ANYTHING from his course and I regret choosing this course.
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!! I took international writing with him, and thought it was the hardest course of my life. Feedbacks he gave were useless, and I ended up getting the same grade after my re-write. Hard work does not necessarily mean a good grade in his class. I spent the most amount of work for this class, and ended up getting a B- AVOID!
I took both International Writing 1&2 with him. He is a caring, lovely man. His grading is fair, as long as you try your best to write every assignment. Talk to him, through email or in person, try to talk him through your topic whenever you don't know how to proceed it. He always inspires you to think deeper. I learned a lot with him. Recommend.
AVOID AT ANY COST!! He never replies emails and the feedbacks are useless for rewrites. Class usually ends half an hour early and we learn NOTHING in class. Grades are tough and, since he doesn't have office hour and never replies emails, there's no way to reach him at all. Please avoid!
First of all, this is definitely not an easy class. If you just want an easy A, go find someone else. However, I find myself quite similar to Dan in terms of our passion for discovering the world through navigating our minds and expressing them in words. This is a class about personal growth. If you realize this, you will have a good time with Dan.
Professor Kellum is amazing! He gives really great feedbacks and it has helped me so much in my other courses. He does not give easy As but as long as you work hard and focus in class you will do fine. He is very caring, humorous, and the overall experience in his class is excellent. Really miss his class and definitely would take him again!!!!
Not an easy A class. Takes much time and effort. The class generally received B- or B with very few people receiving A- at the beginning. The instructor teaches in a unstructured way and gives really vague feedback so in the end you are simply writing whatever you think is right. Definitely not the first choice.
I took another professor's writing before this one and now realize how good his class has been. Very nice professor and very inspiring. You definitely could learn something from his class. Go to classes prepared cuz he will let you speak A LOT. Let him see your hard work and you find it easy to get an A.
His writing class is hard. He assigns too many homework and they are not really helpful. But you may learn a lot about writing. And if you talk to him about assignments a lot you may do a good job. Just do what he wants.
Mr Kellum gives a lot of feedback, which are sometimes helpful but definitely require you to think. Homework every class but they help you to organize the final essay. Make sure you go to his conferences and maybe email him to ask what he wants to see in your essay. Write what he tells you to, and you'll be fine.
Heavy workload, two assignments every week. But he gives lots of feedback and push you to think. Just read sample essays and learn from that.
It is possible but not easy to get an A. You need to work very hard since there are many assignments before final drafts. If you have any questions just email him and he is willing to provide useful feedback.
You need to put in a lot of time and effort into this class because there are assignments due pretty much every class. Instructions and prompts are sometimes really vague which adds to the difficulty.
Do the work, go to every class, and apply the feedback he gives you. The class is only hard if you make it. Also, I love him he is a nice guy.
I was hesitant at first because of the reviews but I really loved this class and enjoy having Prof. Kellum! I think the reason why people give bad reviews for him is that NYU writing classes are brutal no matter who you're taking it. Prof. is very encouraging and understanding. As long as you put in the effort you'll do well in the class!
love him. challenging class but very worth it. love love love.
Really chill guy. Usually ends class ten to twenty minutes early but the lectures are solid and really informative. Homework due basically every class but not graded. He gives feedback on all the homeworks, which was really really helpful at keeping me on track. And I know not all professors put in time to do this, so definitely recommend!
Very chill guy. I love him.
Tough grader. TOTALLY don't know what he's doing on class.
I learned basically nothing this semester. This course brought me great psychological pressure and I couldn't focus on my other courses. Moreover, it had strange curve rules, which further hurt my confidence in this course. This course makes me feel extremely hopeless. All in all, he is a good teacher, but I am not good enough to take his class.
This professor isn't teaching anything useful in class. This professor is not teaching anything useful in class. And also asked us to complete his unknown requirements in the assignment with very little feedback. You give it your all, but you don't get much out of it. JUST AVOID.
Sometimes he would end class 10mins early and homework is based on completion. But attendance is mandatory, homework is a bit heavy(at least 1 page of writing between classes), and sometimes the instructions/feedbacks you get for homework/essay can be unclear. Talking to him after class can help you clarify things, and he's a pretty chill guy.
He is a really tough grader. He provides really hard materials and assignments. I don't know why he thinks everyone can handle that.
Avoid this professor at all costs. He lacks passion and doesn't provide clear feedback.
This class made me so stressed I imagined taking a trip to the Brooklyn Bridge. At least then I'll be free from his constant uncertainty and inability to find the strength to teach the students he signed up to teach.
This course turned out to be a major source of stress, and I regret taking it. Sure, Kellum can be funny and chill occasionally, but most of the time, he's just rude and unfriendly. In my experience at NYU, he stands out as one of the worst professors. I'm a journalism major and have taken four writing classes; he's the only one who gave me a B.
This professor was unfriendly and quite intimidating. He didn't provide clear feedback and instructions, so I naturally had to go and ask again. However, every time I asked, they responded rudely and dismissively, making me feel uncomfortable by questioning why I didn't understand the information.
He's pretty chill only to himself, harsh to others.
I would never take professor again even though someone will offer me a free annual Taylor swift concert ticket. I'll recommend that you just swiftly avoid him.
Run! I'm serious! He is the WORST PROFESSOR I have met so far. His feedback was two sentences at most, and never answered the questions seriously. I need to mentally prepare myself before I his class He is a very mean person, picky about finding fault with your essays. If you don't want to be mentally devastated plus a very low-grade run!Trust me!
Very chill professor, but his feedback are not substantial. He's class can be challenging if you don't put a lot of effort on writing. I wrote my essays very hard but I received B range grades.
While some might consider him 'chill,' I personally don't think so. He tends to end class early, but there's little actual learning or activity during his lectures. Additionally, he's a harsh grader, so I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
Mentally, this course could be more challenging than physics, honestly. If you're aiming to enjoy your college experience, steer clear of this class.
He doesn't provide any helpful feedback, yet he expects us to write essays at the level of a PhD.
very harsh class. He frequently calls out students who seems like aren't paying attention, asking them to read aloud and embarrass them.
His demeanor is incredibly unfriendly and intimidating, making it almost impossible to approach him for feedback. And even if I mustered the courage to ask, he still doesn't offer any constructive feedback.
Very bad
harsh grader
Class was very poorly structured
RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! In class, just an average level of writing teacher. Outside class, assign too much homework but rarely give us feedback
Please don't take him please please please
Idk are we talking about the same professor? He's really kind and nice. And his grading is not that tough. I don't think I wrote great essays but he still gave me A and encouraged me. He's the first professor that say "it's wonderful to have you in my class" in the essay feedback in nyu. Really chill. Attendance recorded.
inaccessible outside of class, unapproachable and zero feedback on essays. meanwhile he expects everyone writes like post doc
no feedback outside class, i mean completely inaccessible outside of classes, never replies emails. almost no feedback for all assignments, picky on your essays without a reason. harsh grader, just stay away from this guy
took his class last semester and gave him a 1/5, but I visited this page to see if he had made any improvements in terms of kindness or diligence. But it seems like nothing has changed, and I'm surprised that people are still taking his class
I'm a neuroscience major, and surprisingly, I devoted more time to this class than I did to any of my STEM courses. In those,I consistently earn grades in the A range. Despite my genuine effort and commitment, I received a B in this class. For context, I graduated from Fay School, so I have a solid foundation in writing. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Why is he still sitting at a 2.7? He honestly deserves somewhere like 1.3.
If you try to ask him reach him out and ask some questions, he'll hit you with a sigh.
If your English isn't perfect, don't take his class. He doesn't try to understand or give people time to express themselves. Instead, he'll say things like, “Oh, I'm confused,” or “Maybe I'll translate what you meant,” and brush you off like that. I found him to be very disrespectful honestly and I felt really bad
I know a friend who seriously considered taking an academic gap year because of how stressed this course made him. He even called me in tears, overwhelmed by how stressful this class was. And he was just a freshman, 18years old , taking a required writing class.
Apparently, this week was the last week of school, so people are writing their RMP reviews, and I agree with all of them. It was horrible
Avoid him if you want to actually learn. He's dismissive and doesn't give meaningful feedback.
Eh, don't take it unless you have no other options. I had to take him because all the classes were full, and it was horrible
I was afraid of having him at first because I saw he had a very low rating, but by the end, I realized it was undeserved. Are we rating the same professor? I had Professor Kellum last semester and really enjoyed his chill vibe. He graded lightly and even let us fix and resubmit essays at the end, if needed. Overall, a great professor.
Please don't take him
Professor Kellum is really nice, he offers a good grade, I don't know why he earns a so low grade in RMP, to be honest, he should be at least 4.
He is very nice and chill, you definitely get A as long as you follow him.
Professor Kellum's progression is very interesting and open-minded, take his class and you will learn a lot, and easy A
This is the kind of class where trying matters. If you don't show up to class or are constantly checking your phone, you'll miss a lot. If you keep up with the work, you should do well. I learned so much from Professor Kellum's class!
The professor's RMP was deliberately ruined by some students, he deserves at least 4, take his class and you will gain both knowledge and grade.
Very chill professor and nice person, you can get A as long as you follow him
Approachable and caring, very chill and nice professor
Very accessible and chill, you will have a chill class
Take him and you will succeed
Amazing professor!
You need to participate, and your effort deserve the score he gave! Easy A in general.
Definitely the most attentive and useful teacher for your writing course
Every lecture bring us to new place, learn a lot!
I am definitely the most attentive and useful teacher for your writing course. Office hours can solve all your doubts about writing courses, and the teacher is very kind. Believe me, I am definitely worth taking his class
His conference is very useful for revising essays, and then get a good grade
NYU can be such a big, daunting place. Professor Kellum's class was a very warm community in the big city. I looked forward to the classwork and discussions. Really interesting!
I didn't know what to think when I signed up for this class. I can honestly say that it was an eye-opening experience. I am definitely a much better reader and writer. Prof. Kellum really breaks things down in a way that makes it easy to understand what we can do to improve. I would recommend for sure.
Honestly, I learned a lot. It kind of surprised me. There is work in this class, but it's manageable if you keep up. I liked a lot of the readings, and I liked his style of teaching.
