He's smart, witty, funny, and he'll tell you the grand secret of chemisty. However, this isn't a class to take lightly; there is tons of information, and a great preparatory course for other chemistry courses.
Likes lasers
Don't ask him to explain stuff, just read the book. When he tries to explain stuff he just confuses himself.
He barely knew how to do anything. Everyone had to correct him and he was an extremely unfair grader...unless you were Mormon.
He is the worst teacher ever!! He expects his students to know as much as him after one of his unclear lectures. He constantly makes mistakes & expects understanding, but if you make a mistake then "that's your problem." Absolutly the wrost, most unfair teacher on the BC campus. He also talks a lot of sh!t about Nursing majors-I think he hates them.
Dr. Kimball was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is extremely fair and approachable. (Even during his lunch) I can only speculate that the people who wrote their comments prior to mine, just weren't prepared for class. That's their fault, not his. I'm not Mormen and I am a nursing major.
Mr. Kimball could not have done more to help us learn. His lectures are downloadable, he is always available, even eats lunch in the cafeteria and says "ask me anything."After taking Daniel last semester and missing a C by 1.5 points, Mr. Kimball has made sense of so much that was a mystery. He treats everyone fairly Mormon or not. I'm an RN major.
THIS INSTRUCTOR DOES NOT EXHIBIT THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO BE A GREAT PROFESSOR. HE REQUIRED A PAPER IN THE MLA STYLE AND THAT'S ALL THAT HE STATED. HOWEVER,AFTER RECEIVING MY PAPER, HE TOOK OFF POINTS FOR HAVING IT IN THE STYLE THAT HE REQUESTED. ALSO, HE STATES THAT HE HAS TIME FOR STUDENTS, BUT HE ACTS VERY IMPATIENT(IN A HURRY)WHEN ASKED QUESTION.
Dan Kimball is one of BC's best chemistry professors. This was the hardest class I've taken, and I had to take it twice. He'll admit he made a mistake, and is very fair to all students. He never gave less time for tests than what was expected. He went the extra mile and always reminded us to have confidence. I learned a lot from him and got a B.
hard teacher. pretty good though. if i stick it out i can tell the next chem class will be easier and pay off. he says he will help you at any cost but then acts kinda grumpy or short with you. all in all i don't recommend cuz his test contain some strangely worded multiple choice questions. he does give practice tests though.
Dr. Kimball was one of the best teachers I've had yet. In fact, he is far better than any one of the professors at the university. He just makes a difficult subject make sense. He drove quite a ways away to make himself available in the morning to go over homework or get extra help. I recommend taking this class in the summer alone.
This man is funny and loves talking about orange juice, he is obsessed. He gives practical easy ways to do difficult problems, he is fun to be around, although he has no ability to smile whatsoever. It actualy makes him more funny, he tries so hard to smile but dosen't quite turn up his face. I am taking him again next semester.
best teacher i ever had. he goes the extra step to make sure you understand the subject. he is always in his office before class to help you with anything ( and i bugged him nearly everyday). he has a web site that has his lecture notes, lectures recorded, and practice tests posted. and yes you will learn about orange juice. great teacher
He was pretty hard, his tests are confusing and there is a lot of busy work. He cannot work out all of the problems on his own practice tests(and probably not the real test either). Other then that he was a pretty good teacher and if you do everything, including the extra credit, and study quite a bit you can get an A(although not too many do)
Difficult. Studying hard and putting up with his orange juice is going to get you through the klass =P
Mr. Kimball is a really nice guy. The material is some what are but is the exams that are the hardest part of the class. If you take his class make sure that you do all the labs, lecture quizzies and homework because that may save you in the end.
mr kimball is a very good teacher. he really knows his stuff, has patience, and will make time to help you...but you have to ask for it before you get behind. he is generous with extra credit, and me knowing absolutely nothing about chem managed a C during summer school.
Professor was great but class was extremely hard. Loves laser and orange juice. Can be helpful but sometimes impatient with students who just want the answer. DO EVERYTHING all homework, Labs, and lecture quizes and you'll be ok. This class is not for lazy people who slack off in the middle of the semester!
omg, the MOST HELPFUL TEACHER EVER!!! He isnt afraid to make mistakes and he tries to make silly jokes which tend not to be funny but keep the mood of the class light. i failed high school chemistry but got an A in his class. BEST AND MOST HELPFUL PROFESSOR EVER!
Dan Kimball is a good instructor that does a good job of bringing in a little bit of humor with his lectures and makes them available as powerpoint presentations as well as podcasts.
KIMBALL was the best!! has an obsession w/ Orange Juice but was very helpful. be sure to not procrastinate because it will get you at the end. Has powerpoints for every ch. and has podcasts. great class very entertaining professor. :)
This teacher is ridiculous he wants you to know the material before he teaches it to the class like a pro. Then when the class is not doing work ahead of time he calls the whole class lazy. How good a teacher can he really be if he calls his class lazy for not knowing the material before he teaches it, he is the real lazy one.
He's an O.K. chemistry teacher. Very hard though. If you want to do good in his class, you have to turn in everything you are told to. also, the hardest part of his class are the exams because they can be very tricky and hard to understand, and they are worth alot of points.
This teacher is ridiculous. The point of "Introductory Chemistry" is to basically to create a foundation for toher science courses. Although, this professor expects you to already know the material, the lectures are not very informative. Labs are a waste of time. Also, half of the class is taking the course again. Don't fall for the trick.
Kimball is a really bad professor, who is obviously not into teaching. He expects PERFECTION. I worked very hard on his class, did all homework and studied for hours for his tests and did all practice tests...And got a 79%. His tests are very lame. Don't expect to see much of what he tells you to study for or memorize, on the tests.
Not a good teacher. The only way to be sucessful in his class is to already know chemistry well.He doesn't teach very well,But he does Expect you to know everything, some things that he doesn't even teach.A very unfair professor.
The only thing that I have learned from Dr. Kimball, is how NOT to be a teacher. He has a hard way of explaining sections and making himself clear. Yet, at the same time expects you to already know everything to an introductory course. I recommend everyone to keep a grading log of their own. He tends to lose graded papers all the time.
He expects you to know the material prior to lectures. Exams are tough, especially the second and third exam.
STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! Very hard class, he does expect you to know the material before lecture. As long as you attend EVERY class and lab, you can pass with a hard earned "B". He is available to help, sometimes seems like he is annoyed by you, but he will help you.
His tests don't make sense. It's like you study for a total different thing. Don' t bother doing the practice tests either, the real tests will ask something totally different.
He is CRAZY!! His tests are out of this world and he marks you off on everything that you can possibly do wrong. He does not have social skills and I think his whole office hour thing is a joke. He gets pissed when you ask him a question and acts like you have been taking chem for years.
Great teacher!!! Hes funny and willing to help you till you get it. Really easy going, just do your work and be there. Mr. Kimball makes science fun and interesting.
good professor. dances and jumps around in lecture. he seems so serious but is very fun. he expects a lot of effort but i still pulled off an A. study the lecture notes, practice tests, and webassign. study everything and the test will be alright. he is an easier professor COMPARED to Cooper and Vaughn!! KIMBALL ROCKS!!! :D
response to this teacher is that he is hard. the only reason why was hard was because i did not study as much. i got a b in the class because his class was an eye opener. it made me realize that without any effort i would not pass the class or any other COLLEGE class that comes my way. COllEGE is not suppose to be a walk in the park. The reason why
The reason why we go to college is to learn, not to judge the teacher or complai that he is TOO hard. I was honestly failing the class at one point, rest assured a life lesson learned and applied. Remember this "The ends Justify the Means" meaning an F grade is the product of a bad effort. remember. instructors are tough friends trying 2 prepare u
loves his orange juice. not an easy a class but he is easier than the other chem profs. very dedicated to his students. he gives you his cell phone number and LITERALLY you can call him anytime and he will help!!! ive never seen such a helpful and dedicated prof. if the student is willing to put in effort then he is willing to help.AWESOME PROF!!!
Talks to students as if they are stupid when asked questions and expects a knowledge possessed only after having taken the course before. Unhelpful and arrogant would best describe this teacher.
Mr Kimball is insanely hard! his tests are killer and he's very hard to follow in class. He does make time to help you, but makes you feel like you're bothering him. You have to study like crazy to even have a prayer of passing. He expects you to already know chemistry even though the class is INTRO to chem.
this guy is pretty cool once he gets to know you. at first he might seem a little hard. but just study the lecture notes and this class should be an easy easy A. by the way his exams are multiple choice so you don't need to study that much.
His lecture quizes are hard but his test are easy. He seems a bit harsh at first but he only wants people there who want to be there. He gives extra credit options too. If you study his study guide and read through each chapter then you will be okay. Don't fall behind. You must stay ahead and you will be okay.
THis teacher is totally unfair, i paid over 200 in books for his class and then droped me because I apparently either sighned the wrong roll sheet or missed it. I even showed him my class notes. He cares nothing for his students least of all their academic sucess. One of those teachers WHO enjoys screwin students. Would NEVER reccomend!!!!
Didnt think chemistry was going to be fun until I took his class actually, he is really a good teacher and knows what hes doing. His class is "more fun then Disneyland" as he says ;P. okay, maybe not that fun but still the labs are awesome. You do actually have to pay attention though D=, lol. Unlike some of the other commentors did ;P.
Professor Kimball goes out of his way to give his students a hard time. He is rude and does not respect women, he believes we are all nursing students! He test's you on math problems that he has never covered, expects to fail them unless you have taken a stat's class. He is the worst professor I have ever had at Bakersfield college.I say RUN!
Wasn't really sure I would like chemistry but I thouroghly enjoyed this class and found it to be easy! He lecture off of power points which can be found online. He does give a lot of quizzes but that helps you to understand the material better! He is very helpful and easy to understand! I would definitely recommend him!
The KEY to do well in this class is to not fall behind. If you try to stay one step ahead of Mr. Kimball you will find the class very easy. I recommend staying a full week ahead on the online homework, and reviewing the powerpoints before the lecture is a must! Mr. Kimball comes off a bit militant at first, but he is also quick to recognize hard wr
Professor Kimball is pretty straight forward. He tells you exactly what he expects out you right away, so be ready.
He is rude and gives no one a chance to speak. He assigns too much work and does help you when you have a question. He is confused with his online homework assignments.
Correction to the previous entry. He DOES NOT answer your questions. I have never had an instructor this bad at this wonderful school.
Yes, as previously mentioned, he has somewhat of an antisocial personality. He's really not what I would consider a "natural good professor," with him, I seems like it's forced. Generally, his lectures are boring, and if your study enough, his exams are easy as pie. If you have the option, I would seriously consider choosing another professor.
The most HORRIBLE Teacher at B.C!! Do NOT take his class if you want to be taught anything about chemistry. He is completely useless as an instructor!
Hard class. Took during the summer w/ Pols B1 (easy). IMO, during FS/SS, take easy classes to fill in your sched, b/c you'll need to dedicate time to his class. Expects you to read ch. before lec. Quizzes after ea. lec. 1st exam is easy, 2nd/3rd are hard. He drops 1 of ea. assnment. Very helpful; can call him on cell ANY TIME. Rec for sci majors.
Is heartless. Does not care for students, or their personal dilemmas. Views them as expendable. Dropped me for being less than 5 min late because I was kept by another teacher. Did not get into the class after spending $230 on books and being 3 weeks ahead in homework/classwork. If you decide to take a class with him, be warned.
Very good Teacher. Expects a lot, or for you to be a responsible College Student. Tests are what the notes are. Follow along and pay attention and you'll do fine. Great Guy!
I took this class summer 2011 with another class, and it was a piece of cake! I got an A. All you have to do is follow the directions and do your homework ahead of time. LISTEN TO THE PODCASTS it makes class SOOOOOOO easy. Also, he's pretty funny and adorable. He also really likes orange juice...
I've learned so much in this class. He is an amazing teacher. He gives all the resources for you to learn ,you just have to use them like podcasts, printed out powerpoints , practice tests, and practice worksheets. Study, read, and don't fall behind. It is possible to get an A in his class! :) advice: when he tells you to be on time ,listen!
Very good instructor-- while very thorough, you will be working VERY hard to earn a good grade, or to even pass in general. I did rather well. Took it over the summer, got it over with, but it was an overwhelming amount of info at one time; take during the regular semester. To summarise this: good teacher, hard work, NOT an easy A!
I took PHSC B12 class in FALL 2011 with Prof. Kimball and I gotta say he's an awesome professor! He truly does know what he's doing and loves it! He's extremely passionate about his work and he's very encouraging! I really did enjoy his class; thus, I found it very interesting that I almost switched majors. Mr. Kimball is truly an awesome professor and he knows it. Just do his work, attend to class, and study and you will pass with an A! I did and I'm proud of it too
I am in the National Guard and had drill the week that we had finals for summer 2012 for Intro to chem. I told Mr. Kimball my situation,he said go ahead and I will let you take home the test. Long story short he sent me the test with answers and then replied to me you cheated and he gave and F.BEWARE- MR.KIMBALL SETS STUDENTS UP FOR FAILURE.
I have been going to college for 3 years straight. This is by far the worst Chemistry teacher EVER! he does not grade fairly. I got A's on most of my test and he still gave me a C grade. I tried talking with him about this situation and he said "Deal with it. Your in college. I dont care." Very, Very, unsympathetic professor!
This class is challeging but Kimball gives you the resorces you'll need to learn the material.I enoyed this class thanks to Mr.Kimball, he motives students to actually try hard, I love him!! I received a B. Btw the practice tests are very helpful use them!read textbook and do your hw every day, don't fall behind, it's hard to get back on track.
Kimball is a great professor. However, he does not simply just give the grade away you need the book and you need to study. He says all of this at the very beginning. Work hard and you will get the grade that you deserve, be lazy and get an F hands down.
WORST PROFESSOR I EVER HAD. Dropped me for being one minute late and I had already bought $300 worth of his books. He's rude and extremely condescending. Taking a summer class with another professor just to avoid this one.
Dan Kimball is an awful professor. He tries to trick students on his tests and lecture quizzes. He uses WebAssign which is awful (google it). Mr Kimball is VERY unreasonable. He is the worst professor I have had at Bakersfield College. He is very impatient with students. His grading method is EXTREMELY ridiculous. Take someone else if possib
Wonderful professor. My favorite here at BC. He often over exaggerates the difficulty of his tests, because they are extremely easy as long as you read the book. Attendance is mandatory for the first 2 weeks or he will drop you. I was never late & missed a few lectures but the textbook is extremely helpful. He's funny and makes a hard subject easy.
Mr. Kimball knows chemistry, but his lectures are hard to follow. Read the text book. If you're one minute late the first 2 weeks, he'll drop you. Quiz at end of every lecture, HW online, 3 exams, and a final. He's willing to help during office hours. This class is way more intense than high school chem. But I learned so much. Got a high B.
This class is very hard, if you dont have to take him then dont. He has no sympathy towards students whats so ever. He is very hard and wont answer any questions students have about the class, all he says is look on the website. The labs were fun but his lectures are very hard and if you dont buy his note packets then prepare to write really fast!!
I took b12 this summer and it was a five week course. His class is pretty easy as long as you are paying close attention to his lecture because there is a quiz in every lecture. The midterms and final was not hard as long you studied and knew the material. people who says that the class is hard is because they are lazy.
He lectures fast! Not an easy course, have to study. Do the homework, labs, and there are lecture quizzes. The exams are okay as long as you study.
One of the worst professors at BC, imo. Comes across as professor that forgets what it is like to learn something for the first time. Multiple times I have asked him a question and he acted like I was stupid for asking. You will lose points for clerical bs. Lost points for not writing CRN and not facing a paper the right direction.
Professional Kimball is a great! He is fun, humorous and really has passion for teaching. I have never liked chemistry, but Mr. Kimball makes it easy to understand. I would recommend his class to people who wants to have a good foundation in chemistry. He is very particular, remember to follow his rules and you will be fine!
His class is great. He shows his passion for teaching very well. He lets you use open book and powerpoints during the test. Lecture quizzes after every lecture, open notes as well. Don't depend on the open book option, must study anyways. He's very helpful and labs are easy and entertaining. I recommend him.
Mr. Kimball is an excellent teacher. If you need to take PHSC B12 or any other science class take it with him! He's super helpful! ALL of his lectures are pre recorded on his wedsite as well as his powerpoints. online homework sucks and there is quizes after every lecture. Overall he's a great professor!
Passing his class is a challenge, but it is doable. He's really tough. It's helpful to work ahead so you'll know what to expect before every lecture. He always tells you to master it before it's taught. His exams are challenging and require a lot of studying with nothing given to prepare. You can use a note card on exams and notes on quizzes.
Took him for Physical Science spring semester. He's not hard, it's just that you must do the homework and show up to pass. There is online homework due before most class sessions. You can't skip this because much of what he lectures on, you should have already worked on. You also can't skip class. Quiz after every lecture.
Mr. Kimball is a nice professor with a sense of humor, and he's there to help if you need it. There's a lot of online homework, but it'll be easy if you don't procrastinate. You can use the book and your notes on tests, but studying beforehand is recommended. Don't ditch class because you'll have a hard time catching up and passing.
Dan kimballs class is not easy, but it's definitely doable with adequate time and effort. His class does a phenomenal job at preparing you for the gen chem series. B1a is pretty easy after Dan kimballs b2a class. Work hard, learn the material well and you'll be grateful for b1a and b1b.
Kimball is like an old hound dog. His bark is way worse than his bite. You can't be intimidated by him if you want help. Went to almost every office hour and it helped me pass this class. Hard work is req'd before the semester even begins. Get behind on the hw or labs and you're not going to even pass. Had to study for tests to pass w/decent grade.
Mr. Kimball was a great professor. he does have quizzes after every lecture. He makes his lectures funny and somewhat easy to understand. Hes always willing to help so don't be afraid to ask for it. I passed his class with an okay grade. Be prepared to work!Overall a fun class to take. He is very passionate about his profession.
Get ahead of the game and you will pass. Study if you can get a group study and help each other get ahead. You have a lecture quiz at the end of the class and you can use your notes. If you need additional help, just go to his office.
I freaked love Professor Kimball, he forced me to change my study habits and I am a better student because of him. He's so funny and super sweet! His class isn't easy, but it can be if you stay on track. He can be a hard grader sometimes, but not that bad. I honestly wish all my professors were him.
Professor kimball is seriously the best! He is funny and he tries to make chemistry as easy as possible! I wish he taught chem B1A! He is a fantastic professor, patient, explains things, his class is hard but you learn a lot and I am very happy to have been able to take his class! It was super hard but well worth it.
Professor Kimball is the most amazing professor I have ever had. He was born to teach Intro Chem. He is so incredibly patient and kind; willing to answer endless questions. If you don't care about school, why are you here? To pass with a great grade takes a lot of work (of course) but you learn so much and leave with a great foundation. Get ahead!
He welcomes questions and has humor. The lectures are easy to grasp since he breaks it down; many examples incl. real life applications. Attend class and do online hw before lecture and you're good. Grp text with lab grp helps. Not too many requirements. Online hw may get long but makes sense since it's practice; labs aren't hard; open note quizzes
He is nothing more than a person reading a power point presentation. He does not actually teach anything. Learn on your own. Class is expensive and he makes you buy more material besides textbook. Power Points are online and you are expected to know the material before he teaches it (LITERALLY !!!). Don't expect to learn anything from him.
Mr Kimball is a good professor, he is accessible. Don't expect to pass just by going to class. The book is a huge help. Do all your labs and homework and you should be fine. Take all the extra credit he offers.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken! I spent about 8 hours studying outside of class every week. Follow his directions exactly! He is very picky & will mark you down points any chance he gets. Working with tutors/stem assistants is most helpful. There's a quiz after every lecture. He emails you before class starts so that you can start early.
EMAIL AHEAD IF YOU WANT TO SEE HIM IN HIS OFFICE. He literally wont follow through with his office hours unless you do so & the moment you leave hes already halfway home. I know this because I went to stop by, he saw me sitting by his office waiting, I called to him and he just left! I tried chasing him down but was no where to be seen!!!
If you want to learn anything during the actual class time take another chemistry class. You will learn next to nothing from this professor. he reads 10 a year old slideshow, cracks jokes and dwells on useless stories about orange juice. Teaching nothing while grading extremely tough. Avoid at all costs. Passable but not worth the headache.
Great chemistry professor for B2A. Cares about his students and is a great guy. Wish I could take him for b1a and b1b.
You MUST come prepared to class in order to understand the material from the day, you must go through his lectures at home before class. He has all his powerpoints up on his website. It is a hard class but SI and tutoring will definitely help. Once you start to understand it, it gets so easy. Plus he lets you use a notecard for the tests.
You'll definitely have to make friends and study outside of class. His lectures are good but you'll need a lot of practice and he's not always available. He has a great sense of humor and gets excited when talking about the material. He may seem a little harsh at first but he's a very kind person! He makes you take responsibility for your education
Mr. Kimball is a really good and caring professor! As long as you ask questions and show that you care he will help you as much as he possibly can! SO ASK QUESTIONS! lectures quizzes are easy and can be found in the slides./online. Exams are based off homework AND the textbook! Make sure to study both of these things and you will pass.
Class is very straight forward and so is he. His lectures can go a bit fast and he could spend more time going into detail. Besides that he is helpful when I asked questions. I have to point out that our hw was online and I only took him for lecture not lab. So other students might have a better insight on what type of professor he is.
Good professor. He goes quickly through lecture and the class does move quickly. So be ready in the class, you will have a lot to do.
Professor Kimball just reads off the board for lectures. You have teach yourself BEFORE he lectures about it because there are quizzes after EVERY lecture. GO TO SI!!!! SI helps out tremendously and DO NOT slack on the homework!!!! DO NOT SLACK ON THE HOMEWORK. The tests are difficult but do the practice test and you should be okay. Good luck :)
Kimball is knowledgeable, but does not teach. Like everyone already explained, he simply clicks through outdated PowerPoint slides that dont work. He spends crucial class time showing cool videos instead of working through problems. When asked a question, he stares back with a blank expression. Take this class if you already know Chemistry.
Professor Kimball does an effective job teaching chemistry. Chemistry requires lots of practice and studying to master, and he did well directing students at what they needed to do to be successful in the class. His tests were challenging, but not unfair. Finally, he taught students to develop work habits they could use throughout chem. and life.
Dan is a cool guy and had interesting things to say, but lectures didn't help with the tests. I taught myself by reading the book and I really enjoyed it for it was interesting and labs are super fun. If you can teach yourself, form study groups and GO TO SI you will pass and learn a lot.
His lectures can be boring. He mostly reads off of his slides so he doesnt really teach. I mostly learned through the web assign homework and tutoring. As long as you understand the homework and study outside of class you should be fine.
During the COVID pandemic, I was not able to focus on this class very well. He taught from outdated power points, expect you to learn everything from the book, and responded late to my emails(not saying he does to everyone). His online quizzes were a bit confusing since they needed a certain format. Overall, be prepared to learn mainly from thebook
Don't take him if you struggle in chem already. I worked hard to understand the material and couldn't learn anything unless it was from Khan Academy. The tests are hard because the answer has to be very specific. I liked that he had everything up before the start date, but that was the only good thing about his class. NOT GOOD ONLINE
Get ready to work. He is not meant for online teaching. This class was harder than it needed to be. I worked really hard to keep my A up but it was difficult. I hardly learned anything from his prerecorded lectures & had to teach myself. I never got feedback on my work. He is willing to help if you ask but he is very short & straight to the point.
if there is another professor option, take it. the PowerPoints are not helpful, the lectures are boring, you will be teaching yourself. The exams are easy and the homework is easy, but if you struggle in chemistry, do NOT take Kimball's class. he is not helpful in office hours, and doesn't seem to like what he's "teaching"
I took him for summer and honestly I would not recommend him to anyone. He gives a lot of quizzes and you get marked down for the most ridiculous reasons. Also, I didn't have access to his labs or powerpoints online but many other people did. Overall, I would say he is a tough grader and not very understanding nor willing to help as much as he says
