If you need to take a Speech Class, take Leyes. Very informative, has a great sense of humor, and wants to make the class fun.

The greatest professor I have ever had in my life. Knows what he's talking about. Just do the work and you'll be fine. He's so fricken awesome.

Dan was a great teacher. I didn't want to take this class because i hate talking in front of lots of people, but he made the class very easy and fun. The tests were easy. If you are like me and not wanting to take this required course take this professor and you'll be happy you did. I got an A+.

You couldn't ask for a better teacher. I get sick at the thought of being up there in front of people, but he made that class so fun, that it didn't even matter. He's an extremely fair teacher. I wouldn't recommend anyone else.

Dan was a very good teacher. Made talking in front of a group easy. I would definatly take this teacher again! The only thing is he is a little ditzy and may mess up your grade but he is cool about fixing it and that shouldnt stop you from taking his class!!

Dan was the kind of professor who got all of his students involved in the lecture and made the class fun. This was the model environment for successful education and allowed the students to prosper and be free to express themselves fully. This ultimately led to a more stress free environment and better speeches.

Speech to begin with is a scary thing, but if you have to take it, take it with him! He makes you feel extremely comfortable talking in front of everyone. Follow his rules, make a good effort on your speech. The trick is to just look at him most of the time while your speaking! I got over my fear of public speaking b/c of his class! TAKE HIM!

He is hilarious and a really nice guy...grades you honestly and fairly, but follow his guidelines for giving each speech and you should do alright. He gives you a few opportunities for extra credit as well.

I would definately recommend him to anyone taking speech. The class itself is just awful but he makes it fun and tries to keep it as intresting as possible. He understands that getting up infront of people & giving a speech is hard and tries to help you overcome it.

Im currently in professor Leyes class and it is one that I actually like attending! He makes public speakin fun and really layed back. So far I'm doing well, and I'm actually learning something! It is apparent that he loves the subject too.

professor leyes is dope, take him for speech! he's tough on attendance, but ya really dont mind goin to his class everyweek so it shouldnt be an issue. do your work and do it how he wants ya to, and you'll pass easily.

Professor leyes brings a subject that most people are afraid of and helps you overcome your fear of public speaking.He makes the class interesting and you hate to miss a class because they are enjoyable.He knowledge of the subject is very good and conveys it to you in a way that is easy to understand. He is by far my favorite professor as of yet.

prof is amazing. the class material itself is pretty boring, but he does his best to keep it upbeat. attn is mandatory and you do speak briefly each class which makes it easier on spch days. this is not an easy class but its required so you might as well have it w the best prof poss.

Prof Leyes is the ONLY one you should take for this class. His humor puts you at ease. You will speak in each class aside from the 3 graded speeches. He is amazing. I was afraid to take this class. But so glad I had him. He is helpful if you want it. Attendance is mandatory. Turn off your cellphone or you will lose points. Take him!!!!!!

Dan Leyes is a great teacher. He is approachable and kind, in an awkward class that no one has an easy time with. My public speaking has greatly improved and I'm glad I took speech with him. He also has a great sense of humor and will give you constructive criticism.

Dan is a real good teacher. He is funny and tries to make you comfortable speaking. If you are unsure of what to do, just talk to him and has no problem helping you. If you are taking speech, take this teacher.

Great prof, was nervous about being in front of strangers but he has a way of making speeches almost fun. Not much reading, but quizzes based on reading. Take his class and you will be glad you did!

Dan was a great Prof and made the class fun. He really hates it when you used your cell phone (I think he threw his pen at someone who was caught texting) but other than that he's pretty laid back. The subject is pretty awful but Dan makes it enjoyable. Easy A if you show up.

What everyone else commented about is true - great teacher. Just DON'T miss class. He does NOT excuse classes and I forgot about that. I missed 3 or 4 classes and any other teacher would have excused them, but he doesn't. He does give fair warning in the beginning of the semester, so don't skip class, even if you have a real reason.

He is the best teacher and very chill, he helps you out. I was afraid to make speechs infront of the class but, now after taking his class i feel so much better and got a great grade, do yourself a favor and take him

Dan Leyes is awesome. He is nice, hilarious, energetic, masterful and passionate about his subject. He is very clear in delineating his expectations. If you follow the instructions, get to class and complete your assignments on time you will do well in this class...love him :)

took him for public speaking. very funny sometimes annoying but knows what hes talking about. jokes alot wit the class and is sarcastic so if you dont like that dont take him. does not like people missing class or coming late. overall good just stick to the miller speech outlines he gives you and you will be fine

i don't know why you would take any other speech teacher. he is really funny and makes the class really interesting. there were those who were petrified in my class to get up and speak, but he made you feel really comfortable. his grading is a little tough though

public speaking was my biggest fear before taking this class.. He puts the class at ease because he is hysterical! Very laid back.. I actually enjoyed going to class in the summer..As long as you do what he says (rehearse speech night before in front of someone..you could def tell who did and who didn't) and show up for class and its cake

This professor is a must take if u take speech 115. He makes the class so much fun and should be a stand up comdedian becuase he is hilarious. I loved everyday of his class.

A commical professor. He makes a semi-interesting class all the more enjoyable. Along with keeping you awake, he's also good at helping students with their speeches in a caring and understanding manner. Aside from the silliness, I would recommend this professor for the class.

being a public speaking class i thought i would always be nervous, but actually i didnt mind going to class at all, it was more of a comedy show. extremely easy just talk about past expierences or encounters nothing to hide in the class, have a good laugh and relax. highly recommend

Dan Leyes was the best professor I had at Brookdale. He is a teacher so he doesn't take any crap, but he is very understanding and will work with his students, he keeps class fun, but you do learn, I wish he taught other subjects.Take this class as an elective, even if its mandatory.. DAN LEYES is def. the way to go!!!

I loved him! So nice, and very clear. Just make sure you DO WHAT HE SAYS. Kids would wonder why they didn't get a good grade, but wouldn't follow the outline at all. Keep in mind, nothing is subtle about this class. You must be clear in your speech, such as "Now that we've looked at X, let's look at Y and Z." Sounds straightforward, but that's it.

I took this class during summer along with one of my nursing classes. Pretty good class, great professor. Don't be afraid of taking this class if you don't feel comfortable in front of an audience (i felt the same way before going into the class) but it's really not that bad. I took the class this fall , yes is a good teacher and the class is very enjoyable . But as far as he staying on top of grade he sucks .. (Typical man behavior ) he never returned my emails , waited the last minute to put it in canvas . Dan is realistic when it comes speech. Get his stuff off Canvas & follow his syllabus. Attendance & Lateness count, so show up on time. You need the book for the test. No one wants to take Speech, take his class. You won't regret it. You have 3 main speeches small impromptu speeches. He makes it easy. You can redo your worst speech if you struggle.

Prof. Leyes is the man! Probably the best, most funniest professor I have had at in my Brookdale career. He makes the class fun and I looked forward to going to class every week. I took him my first semester and he was awesome. I'm the queen of doing things last moment and I got a B. There are no tests, just speaking in front of the class. and for the shy people, he makes it much easier up there for you. also, hes not at all a tough grader.

Thought I'd hate it but I loved it. To this day although I'm still not a fan of talking in front of a group of people, I got a lot out of this class in regards to saying what you need to say without dragging yourself on. He's a hilarious individual & an amazing man. Our class became really close and to this day we still have a group chat!

This guy is absolutely amazing. He makes so many jokes during his lectures pertaining to students, which are funny every time. But also he has a great grasp on public speaking and does an exceptional job on teaching us how to make a speech. 3 speeches, a bunch of mini workshops, and a take home final. I took the Honors section of this course. Professor Leyes is informative and entertaining. Really funny. Don't buy the textbooks - he will provide you a PDF of the book he co-wrote. He gives great feedback. The grading criteria was a bit of a mystery, though. He won't post most grades until the end and had trouble posting the online quizzes.

I came into this class extremely nervous, a horrible speaker, and ended up getting an A and now feel so much more confident about my public speaking and communication skills. Only took Public Speaking because it was a required class to graduate. I dreaded the thought of it but by the end of the semester because of Professor Leyes I ended up LOVING this class and it turned out to be my favorite class because of him. Caring and Compassionate. Wouldn't say I loved the class... but I loved the professor and left the class unafraid to speak in front of others. The way this works is that you speak in front of people every class and you pretty much watch everyone stutter and tremble - some worse than others. The more you do it, the less it phases you. Now it seems easy. Hilarious guy.

When he says read, don't actually read, you're just wasting your time. You better show up though, and just pretend you're listening. Literally, pretend you're putting in effort and your grade will be a beautiful A. All the final exam answers are on Quizlet, just copy and paste the question into the search bar, it'll come up.

I CANNOT recommend Dan Leyes enough. He's hands down the greatest professor I've ever had. He is incredibly inspirational, and supportive of his students. You get from his class what you put into it. He will make you love public speaking, and he does so with a sense of humor. (Not to mention he has a book for $5.99 on Amazon! *jazz hands*)

If you're extremely shy like me and have a hard time making friends, this class will be stressful. For Summer, we had to speak in front of class every class meeting, 1-2 minutes. You have 3 speech projects, Informative/Persuasive/Demonstrative; 3-6 minutes with powerpoint. Use the outlines for guidance! Take notes! Exam comes from what he says!

I took this class Summer I, which is a six weeks course, and I am the kind of person who shakes when speaking publicly, noted that it did happen to me the first time. However, he helped us, his students how to prepare for the speeches step by step. The self-confidence will come in time, but it will come easy because of him.

Even if you don't do well on your first few speeches, there are opportunities to still get a good grade. It's really simple. You just have to show up and actually try! I was a nervous speaker at the beginning of the course, but was much more comfortable by the end. Would recommend this Speech class and professor to anyone. JUST SHOW UP!!!!

Every class you have to do a speech. There's 3 major speeches. He's a very chill guy and gives the impression that he doesn't take the class seriously but he grades hard so keep that in mind. There's no homework or tests so that's a huge plus. The final is online. This class is very easy if you can get over the speaking in front of the class part.

Real great and funny guy. Gives excellent and detailed feedback on everything you need to work on, and gives excellent lectures that really get you thinking and feeling good. Even the people who didn't wanna take the class still enjoyed themselves. You gotta participate and at least try but the class is very fun and laid back.

Very nice and encouraging professor! I get very nervous when it comes to do speeches or presentations, but Prof Leyes tell you exactly what you need to pass and if you do everything your suppose to do you'll pass. He makes so jokes that helps to ease people's. anxiety. Recommend to anyone!

Professor Leyes was the best teacher I've ver had. He was hilarious every class, never rude and never impatient. His class was probably my favorite class in Brookdale. He always made sure you were comfortable to do your speech even if it was 2 minutes or 7 minutes speeches which you do have every class. There is no homework other than the outlines!

Professor Leyes is awesome. He is engaging and genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well.

Professor Leyes is very kind and understanding. His lectures are a bit long so sometimes its easy to loose concentration. Depending on the assignment, he might let you redo it if you aren't happy with your grade. Not plenty of course material just know the material and you'll be fine.

I hate speaking in front of people, but seriously this professor was great. I was dreading this class but he made it fun and I am actually sad that its over. He genuinely cares about helping you improve and he's not a tough grader at all. Don't take anyone else other than him for this class.

This teacher was amazing! Very inspirational and caring. Really does his best to work with you and helps out whenever you need it.

Recommend him as he is very relaxed and funny. Not the best with technology and it took a while for class to get started with all the glitches but nothing too bad really. If you show up and do the occasional out of class stuff for the big speeches youll be completely fine. Only complaint is he took forever to add grades.

Leyes is one of the best at Brookdale! If you are petrified of presenting/public speaking like I was, do not fear! Leyes makes class a comfortable/safe feeling environment for even the most shy of students. I recommend him to everyone! I actually wish I took his class in person! He is very kind, relaxed, and funny! Fast classes with great prof!

I'm a very anxious person when it comes to public speaking so I was very scared to take this class. I decided to take this class over zoom which was a very good decision, because Professor Leyes is amazing. If you're scared of speaking in front of people he will make you feel comfortable, and by the end of the course you'll be more confident.

Dan is a very good professor. He is willing to help and be nice to you! He is also a good singer and he said one of the nicest compliments about me! I had him last summer. Too bad he retired. He was great!

Took him fall 2020 even though it was online he still made it fun and enjoyable. heard he retired so im gonna keep it short with it was in person tbh he wouldve been a vibe

Professor Leyes made this public speaking class very engaging, even online. With his relaxed yet helpful approach, I gained confidence in presenting. Unstuck study was a great study aid too.

Dan Leyes is very funny. He was known for always being like 15 minutes to class… so if you are late he doesn't care. He wants you to succeed so he gives you valuable feedback on your speeches. He's super nice.
