He's very clear and encourages questions. He post the slides online, but he does use an iclicker, so going to lecture is mandatory .He's had extra office hours the day before the midterm which were very helpful. Also, he's not bad to look at which makes going to lecture a little easier.
He's very clear and well spoken. He is passionate about Earth Science and the research he does. The class was really interesting for me and not too difficult because I went to all of the lectures. My TA was really helpful also! Professor Luna really changed my views on science because I actually enjoyed this class!
He is such a good professor! He is always really clear on what is going to be on the tests. Also, his office hours were really helpful, and he's just a cool guy in general to talk to! Take this class!!
He obviously knows his stuff and loves the material. This class was ridiculously detailed and difficult for a GE. If you aren't a science major, it is not an easy class, and it's SUPER BORING. only good thing was there were several smaller grades to pad the midterm and final. if you have a choice, don't pick this for a GE.iclicker every lecture too
He's a good professor, he likes what he does and tries to help students understand. If you're not interested in geology then the class is boring. He didn't require the book, most is based on powerpoint, which he posted on line. It's only difficult because it's boring.
Really cool guy with funny and helpful lectures. Knowledgable about the subject and made a boring class actually pretty interesting.
Great lecturer, made the material super interesting and easy to understand. Doesn't require a textbook, if you take good notes you'll do well on the final and midterm. He has review sessions for both and he will tell you exactly what you do and don't need to know for the tests. Abby for TA was super helpful too
Really fun class. Flash cards and study guides outside of class are a must if you want an A. Luna really loves the material and has tons of really cool stories about his experiences travelling and finding fossils. Great about telling what to study for exams, I went into office hours before midterm and final and it definitely was worth it .
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! Passionate about the subject and about teaching it. Makes everything super clear and definitely knows what he's talking about.
Luna is literally the best professor ever. He is an EXCELLENT lecturer, is really easy to understand and is very clear. He is also well organized, and plays interesting videos sometimes. The midterm and final weren't easy by any means, but if you study for them, there aren't any trick questions, it's just a lot to memorize.
Dan Luna is the best lecturer I've ever had at UCSB. He's extremely intelligent, passionate about the subject area, and his exuberance for the subject make his class fun. Going to it was one of the highlights of my week. And he's only a grad student! He sparked my interest in Earth Science so much that now I'm pursuing a minor in it.
Gotta love Dan! He's adorable. I took this my first quarter at UCSB expecting it to be an easy GE but it actually focuses a lot on the development of earth, mass extinction theories, biology, ecology, and geology. You only actually start learning about dinosaurs at the end. Definitely a solid class - will teach you a lot.
Easily the worst teacher I've had at ucsb.
Dan is so great! His lectures are really interesting, even if you aren't interested in the subject, because he is so passionate about it! He is great at answering questions whether it be during lecture, after lecture, by email, or at office hours. He really wants to help you do well. He's also just a super cool guy!
Dan is a great lecturer, during them you will learn a lot. The tests are pretty hard, you can't go into them unprepared but if you study a lot getting at least a B shouldn't be too hard ( you probably have to multiple days studying for an A). However tests only make up 55% of grade so if you aren't lazy a good grade is definitely possible.
Pretty good, the name of the class is more interesting than the name though. Iclicker questions every lecture.
Dan is by far and away one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are mind-expanding, engaging, and peppered with his dorky, but endearing sense of humor. iClickers every lecture and exams are multiple choice, but hard if you don't memorize cladslecture notes. Labs+iClickers are 55% overall grade though and they're tricky to not ace.
Definitely the best lecturer I've ever had (I'm a senior)! What surprised me most was how, in a class called Dinosaurs, he managed to bring in so many profound and interesting perspectives. I learned WAY more than I expected. Tests weren't easy, but not too hard if you study (learn cladograms!). HW and labs (40% of grade) are mostly fun and easy.
Great lecturer! Very interesting class. Although he post the slides on Gauchospace, highly recommended that you attend lecture since it is an clicker class. Another note, clicker questions give you an idea of what the questions on the test will be like. Some are even on the test. It's possible to pass the class with an A if you really study.
Professor Luna is one of my favorite professors of all time. Sure, there is a lot to cover in the course but he explains it so throughly that you cannot misunderstand. Even though he is serious he made us laugh every lecture which was awesome. Plus, dinosaurs are cool.
I love this man! Dan is the best, and who doesn't want to learn about dinosaurs? The lectures are interesting and include a lot of funny videos to keep you interested. The book is not necessary, I repeat the book is NOT necessary! Final and midterm required a lot of knowledge, but not too bad. Take it for Dan!
Pretty chill and engaging prof who posts all of his lecture slides onlinebefore class . Make sure you know everything on slides to do well on exams. Sections are chill, let out early often. No textbook necessary. Passionate about topic. Grading scale is very fair and HW assignments and only lab is very easy. Attendance is not necessary.
I took this class as a GE but I ended up loving it. Dan is really into what he does and you can tell by his lectures. I was never bored, but maybe its because I like dinosaurs. I would say the tests aren't easy but along with clicker questions and the easy HW assignments you should be able to pass the class. Also, theres no textbook required!
Dan is passionate about earth science. He has real world knowledge and experience that he relates to and includes in the lectures and material. Class is never boring because of his enthusiasm for the subject. Pretty easy class too. Just go to class, pay attention, and you won't have to study much for the exams. No textbook, but there are iclickers.
I absolutely loved this class. Dan is an amazing lecturer and was really accommodating when I had a family emergency. There's no textbook and he posts all his slides online. Used iclicker. There's one group project but it literally only takes like 45 minutes to prepare for. I would definitely recommend taking this class!
This is not an easy class, be prepared to work for your grade. If you work hard you will get a good grade but again this is NOT an easy class.
Great professor.
I took this course to fill a GE requirement, but I gained so much more than that. Dan is probably the best teacher I've ever had in my academic career. He's one of the few who actually care about education and his students' abilities. Funny, outspoken, relatable, and downright interesting guy. I'd take another class with him in a heartbeat.
He is so knowledgeable about the subject and his lectures are never boring. However, the tests are tricky. If you can learn the pattern from midterm, the final won't be a problem. I didn't put 100% effort and ended up with B+.
Cool guy, really helpful if you seek or need the help. His lectures are clear and easy to understand and he's a pretty funny m8.
He's one of the best professors on campus. He's really funny, always clarifies everything and explains to where everyone understands, and he has a very clear time for questions, but will still answers questions at other times. He's the reason I'm thinking of changing majors to paleobiology.
He's the most endearing professor i've ever had, he's also very good at teaching about dinosaurs.
He is such a good lecturer because he is really down to earth and chill. Sections are relaxed. I am not too great with biology (memorizing the cladograms was very hard for me) so I ended up taking this pass/no pass. The homework and topics were interesting and I enjoyed the lectures even though we spent most of the class learning about birds.
Luna is one of the best professors at UCSB hands down. Not only can you just tell how intelligent he is but he's low key super funny. He's the type of professor that got me to make an account and write this right now. The class is a lot of info, but if you study and know the cladograms you'll be fine, I got an A. Section is easy. Highly recommend!
This class was great but I recommend to take this mainly if you're already interested in learning about Dinosaurs. The professor is amazing and so passionate about the subject. The lectures are fun and you won't lose interest but if you're like me and aren't a huge fan of science, don't take
You could tell Prof. Luna is extremely interested about the subject. His lectures are witty and fastpaced. Beware, he is a fast speaker. Class requires a lot of memorization. My group spent weeks reciting cladograms and dinosaur novelties, and the final was 115 questions. Definitely not an easy A. Difficult class but I learned a lot.
He's a great professor! The class isn't it too difficult, but make sure to UNDERSTAND AND MEMORIZE THE CLADOGRAMS!
iClicker every lecture for attendance. All lecture slides posted online. Weekly homework (10 mins max). No extra credit. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Really great professor. Know the cladograms like the back of your hand if you want to do well. Would definitely take another course with him. PS Do not get the textbook.
This class was pretty easy. All you needed to do was go to class and take notes and memorize stuff. I would definitely recommend it, as the material is really easy and he is a great professor. He was really funny and I enjoyed going to lecture.
Dr Luna is by far my favorite teacher at UCSB. He's so passionate about this subject and his excitement makes lectures really interesting. He's actually really funny if you understand his sense of humor. You should most definitely take this class if you have the chance
Very passionate about what he teaches. He is very knowledgeable. College should be a place where you learn to be a good thinker, and professor Luna inspires you to think beyond the materials and about the significance of what you learn. The class is super easy if you do the work, which is very little. Really funny person so go to class.
Lectures are interesting. No assigned readings so this class is not time consuming, Just short online quizzes at the end of every week, which are fairly easy and can be retaken, which is great. The midterm and final are fairly easy, as long as you attend lectures, take notes, and memorize the study guides. Overall good class, and very interesting
Dr. Luna is an awesome professor. He will keep you entertained. However, do not assume that just because it is a class called "dinosaurs" it will be an easy GE. There is an extensive amount of material that you are expected to know well. If you do the work it can be very rewarding.
I loved taking this class my first quarter as a freshman. He covers ALOT of material so you have to pay attention, but if you do and do well on your labs, you'll be fine. He's very passionate about what he's teaching. I got a B, my highest grade that quarter
I wish I could take the course again, Dan is by far my favorite professor. iClicker attendance, easy 10q weekly hw. All lectures posted online. You MUST memorize the cladograms/important people &events, but the class is incredibly fun and he's hilarious. He's super helpful in office hours. Definitely signing up for any other courses he teaches.
This class and professor really gave me a new appreciation for science (as I am a humanities/ss major). This professor is very serious about what he teaches but makes it very interesting and entertaining. REALLY glad I took Dinosaurs with him.
If you memorize the cladograms, you will do fine. If you memorize the information in the slides you'll do fine. Both midterm and final are based on memorizing info which is ok, I didn't spend too much time on this class.
Excellent professor. Even though the exams were harder than I expected, I think they were fair overall since he emphasizes what he wants you to know. Plus, the labs and other assignments are easy. What really stands out are his lectures. They're usually great, often funny, and sometimes downright riveting. Don't buy the textbook.
Great lecturer, the best I've had at UCSB. He's so passionate about the subject and I think it rubs off on the class during lecture and section. I found the class easy because I was interested in the subject. For those not as interested in Dinosaurs it may be a bit tougher. But overall, great class, great teacher, great guy. 10/10
such a great professor. really funny (a lot of funny videos and multimedia content throughout lectures). he's incredibly nice and thorough in his explanations. he let's you know exactly what's on the exams and what's not. gonna be real for a sec and mention that he is a BEAUTIFUL MAN. that is all.
Excellent lecturer & interesting class. He's my favorite professor so far, and his passion for the subject really shows which makes class even more enjoyable. Lectures are really interesting & often have funny videos. He's very nice and helpful during office hours, so definitely go. (plus he's hot)
Prof. Luna is the most passionate professor I've ever had. He LOVES what he does. He made lecture quite enjoyable (and he's super cute, too). But Dinosaurs was WAY more rigorous than I'd expected. Prepare for a TON of memorization. Quite hard if you're not into science-y stuff (like me), but Dan Luna's charisma makes up for that.
There is an iclicker, so I recommend going to lecture! Do your labs! very very important for your grade. If you go to lab/section, click in everyday and do the weekly homework assignments you should be fine. I got a B and all i did was memorize cladograms , go to section and get my iclicker points! Pretty easy GE!
Favorite class I took at UCSB. Very interesting, and fairly easy if you are a bio major, if not then some things will for sure be fairly hard. Iclicker so need to go to class. Need to go to labs but they are easy and interesting. My one piece of advice if you are taking this class is to make sure you understand cladograms, they're really not hard
If you want an easy science GE, don't take it. It's a lot of memorization (memorizing 4 cladograms, dinosaurs names, etc) and it's kinda boring (but tbh, I am not a science person). Dan is a great teacher, he's super passionate about the subject matter, very knowledgable, and always makes himself available during office hours.
amazing professor! I changed my major to Earth Science after taking this class. Leaves barely any HW like 10mins a week so its lit but you have to be 100% solid on cladogram/timeline/history sheets for sure. Hes young but hes honestly better than a lot of the older professors in the Dept. Hes very clear so if youre not good at science youll be fine
Interesting class and a great professor.
Never expected this class to be so interesting. Dan knows what he's talking about and emphasizes all the important material you need to know. Hw and labs are easy but you definitely need to study for the tests. Everything you need to know are on the slides he posts online. If you're into science I strongly recommend this.
I really like Dr. Luna, he is the BEST professor at UCSB. He is funny, inspirational, and provides students with a lot of help. You can see many fascinating fossils in the lab. His lecture is not boring, he tells a lot of funny jokes and shows us Youtube videos. I strongly recommend this class.
Absolutely ridiculous expectations; feels that people don't take Dinosaurs seriously so he takes that personally and intentionally jacks the class difficulty to make it 10x harder. Believes that its his way or the highway and warrants a ridiculous amount of memorization; Dan Luna is the epitome of a professor who does whatever to feel thathematters
This class was a lot of fun and really interesting even for someone that doesn't really enjoy science classes. Dan Luna is a great lecturer and also is quite attractive so if that's a selling point for you, take this class.
Dinosaurs was surprisingly quite challenging! Although, it's easy if you put in the time to memorize the cladograms and key points in his lectures. Go to class because, one he's very attractive, two his test's are based on his lectures (the book is optional), and lastly you get points towards your final grade just by going!
I expected the class to be fairly easy but it's something you really have to work for if you want a good grade. Don't simply cram for a week, study bit by bit as the quarter goes by because you'll need the knowledge for labs and the midterm/final. His lectures, however, are really interesting and it shows he's really passionate about the subject.
Don't let the name of the class fool you, it is not easy. By the final you have to memorize 4 cladograms and a bunch of other related things. However, lectures were interesting and you can tell Dan is passionate about what he teaches. My hardest class this quarter.
Amazing lecturer but not an easy class. Lots of material to learn, but Dr. Luna definitely helped in office hours. If you want to learn a lot take this class. If not find an easier science GE. I'm not a science person but still did ok.
Easily my favorite class Ive taken. Dr. Luna is AMAZING & I always looked forward to lecture. Notes are really easy to follow. DO ALL hw & labs & iclicker. HW took 5 min, super easy. KNOW YOUR CLADOGRAMS. This class completely changed the way I viewed life on earth. I'm a history major & earth science could be a possible minor b/c of him. MUST TAKE
Professor Luna is a great professor. This class is hard if you are trying to get an A, but as long as you put in the effort you are more than capable of receiving one. Luna is an outstanding lecturer; if you want to absorb knowledge and learn about the earth this is an amazing class, however if you want an easy GE there are other courses out there.
Daniel Luna is a stud. Hes a young guy who you can tell is really passionate about Dinos. At times his lecture may get boring but on the other hand theres times where it gets really deep and interesting. I never studied in my life for a class until this class and my hard work was payed off with an A. Take this class! Somewhat easy GE
Very fair, no complaints. Any homework should be an easy 100%, every lab should be a relatively easy A, and iClicker questions are just graded for participation (miss class miss iClicker question). Although, your grade can go from great to garbage with a poor mid-term and/or final exam, even with 100s in literally everything else. & STUDY AHEAD!!
Great class! the professor is a really funny guy and pretty young too. the class itself is very interesting and i almost looked forward to lecture. the lab is extremely easy and if you cant figure something out, ask your TA. his Last lecture is inspirational to say the least so go to it!
This professor was truly profound. Although much of the information is irrelevant to my major, he laid down a foundation of information that I will be able to apply to some of my other electives. Hey is funny, inspiring and everything that I look for in a teacher. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Luna was awesome to have. He is young and energetic and makes the class a lot of fun. You only really talk about Dinosaurs in the first half of Earth 7: "Dinosaurs," but the evolutionary biology you learn before is just as interesting as the dinos you learn about later. Easy class, most people get A's.
Definitely a class to take . The class not only sets an exemplary foundation of knowledge, everything you need to know is in the syllabus and talked about/explained in lecture. His rants on life are sure to expand you horizons on life.
THIS IS NOT A JOKE CLASS!!!! Its not really about dinosaurs, but about evolution and other difficult concepts. The class is quite difficult and midterm and final require A LOT of studying. iClicker required.
Not an easy A, but if you show up to class, take notes on important parts (he posts the lectures online) and start studying about a week before the midterm/final (notecards and memorizing cladograms) you'll do fine. Easy homework, easy labs, ICLICKER REQUIRED The lectures are really interesting and Prof. Luna is pretty dope, definitely recommend!
Labs & HW are easy. Tests are difficult unless you're good at memorizing large diagrams. Google "Cladograms" before you take the class, you will have to MEMORIZE 4 of them. The prof does iClicker in lecture and frequently runs over time in lecture and puts iClicker at the end so you have to stay. Take it from an engineering major, its a hard GE.
I loved this GE! I learned so much and it was a very engaging class! It's an easy class to pass but not to get an A. You definitely need to study for the midterm and the final. Overall he was an awesome professor though, his lectures are really entertaining and he's really funny! You can tell he cares about his students. Lecture is mandatory.
My favorite professor at UCSB so far. He is literally the most interesting person that I have ever met. I learned so much from this class, and was not expecting to. If you put the work in and remain engaged, there is so much to gain. I took this class when I was dealing with a lot personally and gaining a global perspective helped me immensely.
Everyone should take this class! Prof Luna raffles off a pop-up dinosaur encyclopedia at the end of the quarter which should be enough incentive. Even though the class has 800 students, it still feels interactive because he has us submit videos and articles we find online related to dinosaurs. He includes them in lecture and gives you a shout out.
I was dreaming about cladograms for days after the final. Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A, there are plenty of other Area C classes that you can take if you're just trying to fulfill the requirement.
He was one of three professors for the Earth 18 course and he was really nice and caring towards the students and it was like he actually enjoyed teaching (when he got the chance). I haven't taken any of his courses yet but I'm definitely looking into it for next quarter.
Lectures are either hit or miss, but the material isn't hard to grasp. His voice can be monotone at times, but he tries to sprinkle in some jokes through lecture.
Professor Luna is one of those professors that you can tell he likes what hes doing. Hes really funny and engaging, which makes the difficult content easier to understand. Hes one of the best professors Ive ever had.
A great funny professor, but the class is overwhelming. Even though he gives great lectures, the class still requires memorizing a lot of things. Would only recommend if you're good at memorizing. Going to class grants you points since he has iclicker questions every lecture so it's best to go.
Luna is a character. He loves to rant about climate change deniers which is great, but pretty off topic which can make it hard to focus. He's eccentric, but really believes in education as a force for change. Hopefully as he teaches more and gets older, he'll learn to be more approachable and provide better outside support for students.
Not an easy class and tons of different things to learn and memorize. Usually that's why I avoid science classes, but Dr. Luna not only explains everything well, he's really enthusiastic and sometimes you leave lecture with your mind blown. I've never had science class like this, it literally changed my perspective on life.
This was my favorite class of the quarter. Dr. Luna is an amazing lecturer whose enthusiasm makes any material interesting. However, there is a lot of content to learn, but I personally don't mind because of him. Also, he's helpful during office hours! 10/10 would recommend to those willing to put in effort.
This man will not give you a break no matter what. The course itself is cake-work, however the professor is unnecessarily extra. A fire is making the air quality un breathable and the prof still made his final mandatory and on campus, claiming the class is too large. My Phil prof made his final take home and that class is nearly triple the size.
Lectures are interesting but labs are kind of difficult.
the most interesting class I took this quarter, and he made it really fun with his sarcasm and videos.
This class was really fun. It was difficult at times because of the memorizing of the cladograms. I also took it during the summer and people said that the fall one was a lot more difficult. I liked the class and it was a great intro to college because i had to study a lot.
Super interesting class that might leave you mind blown at times. Dr. Luna makes going to lecture bearable bc he's funny and keeps it real when referring to what needs to be known for the exams. MC Midterm, MC final, few homework assignments that are simple. Sections clarify all concepts and are easy points. Lots of memorizing! iClicker needed.
Prior to taking Earth 7 with Dr. Luna, all of my friends warned me that the course would be very boring and is just a bunch of memorization. I actually ended up really enjoying the class and found it to be relatively 'chill'. You either really enjoy the class or dread it; I happened to love it. 10/10 would recommend.
One of the best professors Ive had yet. He made the class fun by adding funny videos to the lecture and is super passionate about what he teaches.
An amazing man with amazing lectures. Really passionate about his dinos and he's always showing videos and memes he thinks are funny that really get the class comfortable. Easy tests but MEMORIZE THOSE CLADOGRAMS EARLY. DON'T WAIT.
Luna is a great professor! He seems pretty intimidating but is actually a really good lecturer and makes things easy to understand for all students. The midterm was difficult but not impossible if you study hard. The course material is very interesting. Due to Thomas Fire, Luna offered to double our midterm grade which was very accommodating.
Class was overall easy but pretty interesting. His lectures were OK, he didn't seem that excited to be teaching the class. Gave an amazing lecture on climate change, though.
Before I took Dinosaurs I was scared to death because everyone warned me about how much memorization and work it was going to be. Let me just say Dinos was definitely is best class I took all quarter, Dan Luna is an amazing man who cares about his students. His lectures leave you mind blown- just go to class!!! This isn't a hard class to pass.
Luna is a very great lecturer, obviously passionate and knowledgeable about his field. The exams are a little rough and he doesn't give any study guides, but he does give resources to study throughout the quarter, so long as you consistently study you should be fine. He's a hilarious dude, always includes fun videos and comics in his lectures
This class is seriously so easy. All you have to do is show up to class and do the homework. I did not learn anything from this class but it was fairly easy. I got a D on both the midterm and final, and still got a B.
Professor Luna is great, I really enjoyed his course and it was obvious how passionately he felt about the course and its material. He's the reason I'm taking EARTH20 with him next quarter. I found his class to be really enlightening, and I just generally learned so many things. The exams require work to be put in, but the homework is really light.
Get ready to MEMORIZE CLADOGRAMS! That is 99% of taking dinosaurs. Other than that, easy class if you study/memorize. Prof Luna is great. Clearly passionate and knowledgable about his subject. Also, easy on the eyes ;-) Definitely recommend taking his class.
I LOVE DAN! Sometimes the lecture material isn't the most interesting but he really tries to keep students engaged by incooperating funny video clips and telling stories of his personal excavations. Overall such a sweetheart you should really try and take him whether it be Dinosaurs or Geological Catastrophies
Luna was the best organized, most passionate professor I've had at UCSB yet. His class was not an easy A, but easy to pass and an A is manageable with a little work. It's mostly memorization, so knowing his slides back and forth are crucial for the midterm and final. Overall, a very reasonable GE with a professor who actually cares.
His class was okay- I personally dont think it was as interesting as others. His tests require a lot of studying and memorization. Overall I found him to be an okay professor but not very approachable. Not an easy GE.
Doesnt require a textbook and tests heavily on his lectures and material from section. It's a very easy class to pass but kinda difficult to get an A in unless you attend lecture and pay attention to any commentary he adds to his vague slides. He posts his slides on GS. Cares about the environment and educating his students on disaster preparedness
Professor Luna is a great professor. He makes his lectures interesting and is very passionate. There are simple weekly assignments, a midterm, a group project, and the final. He does not test on anything he hasn't gone over in depth. Also, it's nice to not have to purchase a book for this class.
Dan always kept the course interesting and made sure that we had time to ask questions. He tells you what's important for the exams and what not to worry about. As long as you attend lecture and take decent notes, it's really a fun class.
Super cool guy. Relates to students well and doesn't make you buy the textbook. I like to describe his lecture style as "organized yelling" but in a good way. Just a really passionate dude trying to make others passionate too.
Professor Luna is one of the most passionate professors I have had at UCSB. I have taken both Earth 20 and Earth 7 and the tests are both based solely off of lecture material and are extremely fair. If you attend lecture, and study the material hard you can definitely get an A.
He's great! You do have to go to lecture for an attendance grade, but all his lecture slides are online and they're usually pretty detailed and useful. He's an interesting professor, he's passionate, he's got a sense of humor, he's well organized, and he was by far my favorite teacher this quarter. Absolutely would take again.
One of my favorite professors here at SB. He's extremely passionate and makes lectures very interesting. There's one midterm, a final, and a group project. Everything should be a breeze if you study. The tests are extremely fair and based off of the lectures. Would highly recommend taking any class with him.
Dan is passionate, knowledgeable, and strives to help students with the material. He posts all lectures online and adds small videos and tidbits throughout to make it more digestible and fun. The labs are extremely easy and won't take the entire hour to finish- the TAs are super helpful! Homework is due once a week and usually takes 15 minutes.
Dans lectures are kinda boring and honestly not super important. I went to them all but didn't really pay attention to anything he was saying. He goes fast in lecture but puts every pp online so you can take notes easier. HW is super easy, no readings, Labs are also super easy. you don't have to know anything fr until the midterm/finals come around
FOR THOSE TAKING THE CLASS FOR A GE: Look, this isn't the easiest class. Do NOT be fooled by the title of the course. If you do not go to class and think "hey I can just take it P/NP how hard can it be?" PLEASE be careful. If you don't go to class, the material will pile up REAL fast, I swear. Please look at his lecture slides online each week fr.
Great dude, easy class if you go to lecture AND/OR look at the slides online. PLEASE be warned, if you're taking this for a GE, it's NOT so easy. Put in the work, the class is a breeze. Don't go to class, mark my words you will regret it when the midterm and final comes around like I did. I barely got a P. Please don't be like me, go to class!!
I took Dinosaurs Fall Quarter as a First Year. When registering, although it may seem easy, it is not! The class is almost 100% memorization! I don't regret taking this course and I thought Dan was a good professor, but this class was definitely harder than I has anticipated. Also, there is no textbook required/needed so don't buy one!
He comes off as very annoyed and unapproachable but he is just passionate. He is very nice and approachable, go to office hours and you will see. The class is not hard to pass, there is just so much memorization. Start studying for the midterm and final two weeks before, trust me. Read through the lab before you go to section, you will do better.
heir are around 6 homework assignments (online) and 4 quizzes (online). You must attend lectures and sections! Attendance is mandatory for lectures and for section/lab you must attend because there is an assignment due at the end of each lab. Midterm and final were pretty difficult, study at least a week prior for these exams and you should pass.
Super easy homework assignments. Take notes in class and MEMORIZE CLADOGRAMS before exams. The labs are super easy you can get 100% on all of them. This course is heavily based on memorization and actually pretty difficult. You will not talk about dinosaurs until the end of the course, and it will certainly not be an easy A without effort.
Dinosaurs was a super easy ge. Lectures can be quite boring but everything dan says is super important and could be on the mid term or final so try not to fall asleep. An A requires more work but a B is totally attainable. Homework every week but super easy assignments. Overall very interesting course with small workload.
Dan is the best lecturer I've had and I'm in my last year at UCSB. If you want to learn a lot take this course! Definitely requires studying to do well on exams, but labs and hw should be easy if you ask questions. The last lecture was seriously one of the best speeches I've ever heard in person.
He will immediately tell you they only called it dinosaurs so you sign up - it's introduction to palaeontology. Harder than expected but overall a good class. Memorise the cladograms for the midterm and final.
Dan is an amazingly lecturer and a fascinating, passionate, knowledgable human being. He made this class accessible to non-STEM majors. All of the info I learned this past quarter I can apply to the world around me, and I also appreciate his desire to educate and inspire this generation to be more politically active! 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 project
Best professor on campus. His class was the only one I could actually pay attention to. Very organized, clear, and considerate. Homework is short and straightforward. His humor and passion for the subject keeps the class interesting. I don't like science but I still enjoyed this class a lot. I can't recommend this class enough!!
Luna is very into his work, and his passion is clearly evident, which is the mark of a good professor. Dinos is NOT an easy A, with weekly homework and easy labs, you MUST pay attention in lectures, memorize cladograms, and work hard for the midterm and final. It's straightforward if you put in the work, and you may get something out of the class!
Sarcastic and enthusiastic, Dan's pretty great. To be fair, he does expect his students to be willing to put the work in, so it's not a class to completely slack off in. I didn't use the textbook at all, but I definitely studied hard for the midterm/final and got A's. The labs are really cool (you look at fossils!). Good class!
Dan the Dino Man is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. His lectures are informative and engaging, and he makes what could be a dry topic incredibly interesting (his last lecture made me question my life path and consider becoming an earth science major). He makes lecture fun, and he clearly wants his students to succeed. We stan Dan.
At first I thought this was a "difficult" professor, but now looking back I realize how much I should have appreciated his system of teaching/learning. The lectures are very clear and concise; they're well organized and include participation (10% of your grade) through iClickers. It's a huge course but still gives lots of options for help.
Daniel Luna is the best professor I have taken. He is so passionate and knowledgeable and his class was genuinely amazing. It led to me switching my major to bio, & I was planning on majoring in a soc. I ended up taking another class by him, and it was amazing, educational, and completely changed my worldview. Take Professor Luna if you ever can!!
I really enjoyed Professor Luna's class. After taking Earth 20 I was left very confused but he has been able to explain everything very clearly so that anyone can understand. He doesn't make you purchase the book and there is one group project at the end of the quarter! Other than that the midterm and final weren't too bad (if you studied).
One of the best profs here at UCSB. Hands down. Only discusses practical knowledge worth knowing which is a nice refresher compared to most other classes. Very cool guy, personable, friendly, and highly recommend.
I didn't care much about evolution before this but he made me love it. Don't take if you're looking for a class that you don't need to work for - easy labs and weekly homework, the only hard part is that you actually need to study for the exams. GO TO CLASS & LEARN the cladograms (its not hard). Take if looking to learn something.
The class is really easy as long as you show up to class, take notes, and listen to lecture. There is homework but it's nothing too hard. The exams are straight forward and he's not trying to trick you. Professor Luna is hilarious and an amazing teacher. He truly wants students to learn and I hope to take another class from him in the future.
Dr. Luna has been by far the best professor I have ever had. Challenging, but worth all of the effort. His class changed my perspective on life. Dr. Luna is the epitome of a terrific professor and person: passionate, knowledgeable, thought provoking, and incredibly compassionate. If you ever have the chance to learn from him, TAKE IT!!
The lectures for this class are unbearable. It's very boring and the professor is VERY politically biased which makes you wonder whether you accidentally signed up for a politics class instead. It's a heavy science based class. Stay away if you are not interested in heavy memorization.
Luna is probably my favorite professor I've ever had in my few years of school, and I only had him for this one class. I left the class with a not just a lot of cool knowledge but a changed perspective on the fragility of life. While some disagree, I found his lectures fascinating, and at the end of the year, realized I was sad the class was over.
Luna is a great and passionate professor that you can tell genuinely cares about his area of study. His passion and dry humor during lectures makes them on the more interesting side of lectures provided at UCSB. Overall he's a great guy and has changed my outlook on science and how we should treat our planet!
Dan is an amazing lecturer! Im genuinely sad that hes leaving UCSB this summer. His lectures are posted and exactly whats on the exam. His lectures is very straightforward and you can tell they he cares about the material and his students! There are Iclicker questions but they arent worth much. Took Earth 18(P/Np), 20, and 7. P and both A+.
Dan is so dreamy, especially when in lecture mode, but the class is fairly challenging, as far as content material. Very heavy on memorization and if it wasn't for the labs, I would have failed. DO NOT take as a GE.
Luna is incredibly charismatic and passionate about his field of study. I will carry the lessons I learned from this class into the rest of my life. It's the best class I have taken at UCSB and I am sad he is leaving otherwise I would have taken more classes with him.
Luna is one of the best professors Ive had at UCSB. I took the class as a GE and ended up learning a lot more than I anticipated. The content is hard to remember, so start studying the cladograms ahead of time if you want to do well on his tests. Luna is always eager to help you understand the material too since he knows it can be challenging.
Don't take if you're looking to do minimal work and expect anything above a B. AMAZING lectures with an even more engaging professor. The class is A LOT of memorization but it's not easy as it is about evolution and you need to know each link. My favorite class this quarter, he combines science and philosophy- must take if you can! Go to class!!!!
Luna is the absolute boy. Super passionate about what he's teaching and a very cool guy. If you're taking an earth class and see luna as the professor, you would be doing yourself a disservice to not take his class. Also memorize your cladograms ;-)
This class is all memorization and its awful. You would think a class about dinosaurs would be fun but it is not at all. He will try to tell you that its not about memorization and rather about logic and understanding phylogenetic trees but really it is memorization of hard to pronounce dinosaur parts and time periods.
