I really enjoyed the online classes. I have taken two. Clear, straightforward and interesting. I was able to review my tests during his office hours. By far two of the best online classes I have taken. I have taken 9 online classes.

Willing to help you out—just visit office hours. Pay attention in class B/C just about everything in class is on the tests (you still HAVE to read the text). A lot of real life application. I enjoyed it and would take another class from the teacher.

Even for a distance learning instructor he is great. When I see him on campus he is very charming and helpful when you need the help.

Class is not for slackers. There is paper writing involved. Lots of reading and studing for test. Use the online site for test. Really helps.Def College level class. Involves good reading comprehension.

A helpful and very approachable instructor. Down to earth and very bright. He will help you if you need it. His study guides are very good. Take this teacher and you will learn alot.

Mr. McNeil explains everything in extreme detail and doesn't make one feel dumb if more explanation is necessary. His class isn't always fun, but often insightful. Don't fall asleep in his classes, he will throw things at you!

I took his online fast trak course and really enjoyed it. My computer lost service twice during quizes and he was really cool about letting me take them again. Great teacher, involved, always available, and good subject to study! I would take ten more of his classes if I had the choice. Course work wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy either.

Professor McNeil is an awesome instructor who will go out of his way for his students. Prior to this course I just wanted to get my AA and move on, but now I have aspirations to go to a 4-year college, thanks to Prof. McNeil. He is a MUST take and it may change your course of life.

Dan is the man. If you read the textbook and attend lecture you should do very well. He seems to always be avaliable for his students so go see him in office hours if you need to.

Took his online class. There was a lot of reading and the tests were a little difficult. Still ended up with a B. If you don't have extra time or are taking a full load I would wait until next semester to take his class

Good teacher. Explains the material well and his expectations are clear. And if you can't handle this class you obviously don't belong in college. So to the person that said " too much reading and test" and its not a UC level drop out of college. Anyways I recommend this instructor.

I disagree with the last rater. Yes reading the book is a requrement but this is college and if you cant read maybe you should consider your options. Yes the tests determine your grade but that is how it is in every class. Read, study and think it over and you will do fine. This teacher always quickly responded to my emails--he is there to help

I liked the class and teacher alot.

I loved this class! I had so much fun in it and learned a lot. Mr. McNiel is a really helpful teacher and demonstrates a clear love of his occupation and subject of his occupation. He is also very easy going and forgiving on tests and technical matters.

Very knowledgeable teacher that expects you to know the ins and outs. He is very helpful. I did end up with an A but if you disagree with him and argue your point sometimes he takes offense and will hold it against you. Reading is mandatory. (Way too much work for a 3 unit class)

My fav class this semester! I always looked forward to going to class. The class is interesting and relevant to current events. There is some writing and a decent amount of reading. He lets you use ?cheat sheets? on quizzes and most of the exams. If you like studying people, etc...., you will enjoy it!

I was in the Online family class. I learned alot about my self! Teacher responded to all my questions and if you do well on the final paper you will get a good grade. Book was expensive but you need it.

I am in the middle of taking two sociology classes with Mr. McNeil. They are summer courses so they are condensed and a lot more difficult. I was expecting a huge and stressful workload, but the teacher made sure to give just enough work so that we learn the material as well. Great teacher in my opinion. Will be taking more of his courses.

Professor McNeil is an easy going person. If you pay attention and ASK QUESTIONS you can do well in the class. Tiny teaches and mini lectures are not very helpful. His test and quizzes are difficult. Class went from 32-15 students within a month. You can't mess around if you want to succeed here, but he does TRY to make it fun.

Taking this class online I thought it may be hard. It wasn't too bad. The work load was light, but the tests where hard! The questions were worded weird, and the time limit was crazy short! Especially if he decided to throw in an essay question or 2 and want multiple questions answered and cited while you had other questions to go too. Ridiculous!

I took this class on campus and found McNeil to be a fairly good teacher. He has a good sense of humor and always seemed interested in what he talked about. His tests were kind of weird at times but not TOO difficult. I hated his pop quizzes because they always involved essays. Class required A LOT of reading. Overall I enjoyed it.

He's a very dynamic speaker! He'll make you laugh quitell a bit. Key to this class is to read everything you can. Don't focus on memorizing as much as understanding the general concept. If you do that and participate in class, you'll do very well. Additionally, he's a pretty good lookin man.

Took this class online. Text book is a must have. A lot of writing and reading. His grading is average. Some papers I got A's on some I got C's on. It just depends how well you write about what you readlearned. I did ask for help towards the end of the semester and he was happy to help me.

Good material and class, but timelines are very rigid so you have to make sure you stay on top of things. Will work with you somewhat if you ask. Class is out of only 200 points! Read 2 chapters one week with a discussion board post and reply, then test on chapters the next week. Very minimal extra credit available through testing or final project.

Tons of reading and writing. Two essays a week! Luckily, I'm alright at essays so I didn't struggle much but if you're not confident about your essay skills and you dislike reading full chapters out of a textbook-- this isn't the class for you. Also- make sure to participate on time because he doesn't take late participation essays.

Funny and a good lecturer -- he helped me in office hours and was approachable. You got to do the work and you gotta read. Interesting assignments. We watched a couple of good docs

it is my major and it was a good class -- he is passionate about Sociology -- good sense of humor and helped lots in office hours with the test essay questions -- the study guides will be key to success on tests. He was nice and wrote me a awesome, letter of recommendation when other Profs never responded to me emails

Excellent class and teacher. He definitely sparked an interest in sociology and I would take the teacher for another class. He was willing to work with me in office hour (on test prep and a take home essay). Read the book or you will be sorry, take good lecture notes to focus on what he will pull from text and put on test.

Dans Sociology 101 class is great. Its really interesting, and discussions are thought-provoking. Tests are easy if you pay attention. Everything is clear cut in the course, but youll need to read the textbook to pass the exams, which arent too difficult. Mr. McNeil is very approachable and sarcastic, his class is a joy.

He is an awesome teacher! His lectures are lively and he's not monotone which is really important. He's interesting and brings up good points. Not too difficult of a course if you just do the reading. He is easily one of my favorite teachers that I have had at Hancock.

All the grading is based on exams and a couple homework assignments. This was by far my most difficult class of the semester. There is a lot of reading involved. If you don't read the book you wont pass. He's a really cool guy, he likes to joke around and have open debates in class but his exams and hard and the wording can sometimes trip you up

Not too hard not to easy. I wish there was more official homework to keep us on track , he leaves studying up to you. He is nice and allows different opinions. Stick to the big themes, use the study guides and the class is straightforward. I recommend the teacher.

I honestly believe that Professor McNeil is a great professor. He is very approachable and is always eager to help those that want to learn. Bottom line, if you don't study or read the chapters don't expect to get anything above a C. On the other hand, if you study like you're supposed to, you will pass with a B or an A. I highly recommend him.

McNeil is a pretty good teacher! He definitely wants more people to be aware of what is going on in society around them. He is easy. Just do your work. He offers LOADS of extra credit! The exam questions are generally from the lecture but takes from the book too. Read your book! It will make the class way easier for you.

I took this class online, great class, wish I took it on campus so I could have enjoyed interacting with the class more. For online, tons of reading, that's a given. As long as you read the chapters, work hard, you should do fine. I stayed in frequent contact with the instructor, he was very helpful and encouraging. Enjoyed the class!

Good teacher and has high expectations on reading and essay writing. He does a culture pot luck for extra credit that was fun and helped my grade. Take his advice on studying and make the note cards when you can. He stresses diversity as a strength in society.

Great professor and fun class. I hate reading and we read a lot but the textbook and articles given were to enjoyable that I didnt care how much I read. Grading criteria clearly defined, he's very helpful and will answer back ASAP, and if you struggle, extra credit assignments are there. Homework assignments were fun Best online class taken so far.

I really enjoyed professor McNeil's lectures. I don't believe these reviews that label him as "hard" to do him justice as he does give you a study guide that covers all of the information you will be tested on, which is more than most professors do at Hancock. If you think that his course is "hard" then you might have to rethink your study habits.

doesn't take roll everyday but there are pop quizzes very sarcastic I learned a lot and had to put in a decent amount of time before the tests i hate canvas and a lot of materials are only there he is a very fair grader

Took 101 canvas and it was challenging but I learned a lot and he was very responsive to my questions , the class is well organized and no late work is allowed but he did accept one late paper from me ,went to 2 office hour and he is nice,theres lots of reading and writing but it is interesting and the teacher is willing to help. the final exam is

Took an 8 week online course; all requirements were clear and concise. Tests were difficult due to timing; you never know how many short answer vs how many multiple choice. The final essay assignment was INTENSE. But he was very easily accessible, I actually had a few phone conversations with him. I learned a lot in this course but it was not easy

the toughest class i have ever loved, interesting and relevant, made me think a lot! there is plenty of freebies that help for the rough parts, fair and passionate, take him he helped me see the light

Must study and read so if you arent in to that try 1 of the easy profs. Extra credit 4 tests and extra credit papers, 2 quizzes were just for showing up, missing class is no, university level expectations w/ no hand holding. Grades very quickly. Fun class but hard for your average hancockian, there r still profs out there trying 2 make us better

Be able to read and write with a college level before you take this and then study a little bit each week and it will be straightforward

Loved the topics he curated for us. They responded to my questions promptly. The final project seemed hard but I got 100% just follow the directions and you will get a good grade on the autobiography.

The textbook is free . Some kinda interesting films and articles have to be read for the tests. Offered extra credit. He wants quotes in your posts. Not as hard as some think. Gave me feedback on a film review draft but had to send it to him 4 days before it was due, which was hard bc I work! I did get a god grade on it though!

Mr. McNeil is awesome! He gave me feedback and recommendations on some of my essays. People think Sociology should be easy however the instructor prepares students for in depth analysis as he should. That is what sociology is. Also prepares students for university level homework. Overall Awesome!!!!!!!!!

Professor McNeil's grading criteria is clear and fair. He expects you to draw a connection between the provided reading and/or watching materials to the concepts of the class, but that's the whole point of every class you'll ever take. If you do the work and put a little heart into it, you'll do great.

I dont get how people think hes hard. Obviously you have to read. The class was easy for me. Hes nice and does curve and gives extra credit. I have taken two courses and would take a third. I took online soc 102 it was easier than 101

Class got easier at the end had a C the whole time then finished with a B. Interesting reading and topics. The assignments were kinda fun. Lots of writing and reading. Nice guy. He jokes a lot.

I really enjoyed the topic of this class. As far as online school goes, I believe he was very helpful with any malfunctions of canvas or the tests. I wish this class was in person in order to experience some of his lectures. He gave a clear schedule and stuck to it. He also lets you know what you should be studying in order to pass the tests.

He was a very nice professor, if you kept up with the readings the lectures were more understandable, he made participating in class easier too. You have "pop" quizzes but he basically warns you a day or two ahead of time but it's was easy and enjoyable class with Professor McNeil. The work was very straight forward and easy to finish.

You need to write a lot in this online class. He wants you to use quotes from class readings and if you do so your grades will be good. Many of the things you have to read are helpful and practical. He responds right away to any problems or concerns.

This class is curved and there is extra credit. They use free online textbook but I bought a hard copy of it for about 30 dollars at ama. My grades were low at first but once I incorporated quotes from the textbook and required articles my scores went up significantly. I got a B with a medium amount of effort. If help needed will respond to u fast

I got a B and it wasnt too much work. Reading Is a big part of the class. The film papers really helped my grade. If you put quotes from the textbook in your writing he gives good grades. There are a lot of details to this course about grading and due dates (could be simpler). I did not get it at first and lost some points. Fun and recommend

I learned a lot in this class. Very important life reading. He is very flexible and understanding. Nice on zoom I made up some late assigns. Im not the best writer but if you follow his rules youll do good. This online class has many essays. Tests are open book

I enjoyed this class immensely. Professor McNeil was extremely fair and he makes sure you get your thoughts and opinions expressed,as long as you cite your sources. Which is very reasonable. He offers extra credit, but if you read the articles and the textbook you will be just fine.

The prof is Very kind and knows his stuff. Always answers your questions and has a positive attitude. Not easy but not that hard. Text is cheap or free online.

I have taken multiple classes with Professor McNeil and loved every class. He gives the opportunity for extra credit and cares about his students. I would definitely recommend and would take more of his classes!

I had the pleasure to take dan last semester and while some say he is difficult I would say his class is challenging but well worth the experience. He cares that you learn and has high standards. He made the class challenging but that only made the accomplishment of getting an A rewarding. He allows for late work and begs you to turn everything in.

His high standards forced me to read and try very hard and I am grateful that some professors still maintain high standards. I learned a lot and sharpened my critical thinking skills. Keep up the good work Dan!

He was very understanding that most of us work and have other classes. He accepted a couple of late assignment from me and my friend. Put extra credit on some tests. I was thankful that he curved grades. I did not really like the textbook but some articles he made us read were really good

A good teacher who simplifies complex topics and makes learning enjoyable. He adapts to students' skill levels, provides support, and incorporates diverse materials. I got full credit on all my essays by throwing in quotes from assigned readings and carefully following his directions. I feel lucky to have learned so much from an online class.

I took his online SOC 101 and 102 classes which were very straightforward. He provides free textbook versions, so you don't have to pay. Assignments require a basic understanding of the class material while using in-text quotations. So, as long as you do your part and follow his instructions, you should be fine. Overall, great teacher!

This professor is very clear about expectations of the class. He sends out reminders and follows up. It can seem like a lot of work but it is very organized and easy to accomplish given his great organization and communication skills. He is the best professor I have ever had and was very encouraging.

I could not have asked for a better professor. He is exceptionally clear in his grading criteria and expectations for the class. As long as you follow the instructions, you will experience no undue stress. His charismatic approach makes the learning experience enjoyable, and he is consistently helpful with reminders. He was also very encouraging.

From day one, it's clear that this professor holds students to a high standard—not to be harsh, but because he genuinely wants every student to succeed. If you want an easy A, this isn't the class for you. But if you want to learn—to actually understand and apply what you're studying—this professor is unmatched.

He didn't give out much homework and I didn't read the textbook at all. I relied on lectures and doing "cheat sheets" for exams. He does notice your attendance and you can tell he's passionate about this subject so prepare yourself. A good teacher but does grade hard so beware. Def would've preferred to take this online.

Professor McNeil is an amazing professor that genuinely wants to teach his students. Every lecture was informative and engaging, and he has clear expectations set for the class. This class is almost impossible to fail, but you will need to put in effort to get an A. He gives students everything they need to succeed. I highly recommend this class.

He has been the best online professor I have had throughout my winter semester, he is very active through the online courses. Expect a lot of emails and check ins, though his assignments may seem difficult, if you answer thoughtfully and use the articles he's given you, you will be graded fairly, giving constructive feedback.

He is such an amazing professor would recommend taking his class. He is on top of his work and knows what he is doing, he makes class fun and he's funny. Work is not hard at all it may be a lot sometimes but it is easy. He cares and understands, responds to emails right away. Great lectures, warns you when there will be an exam, notecards are good.

Dan can be funny and serious when he has to. This class was quite simple and straightforward. All tests were based mainly on class lectures and were multiple choice. He is very understanding and engages well with his students. The group project was the only tedious part of this class but he did give us ample time to complete it. Great intro class.

Although his group presentation has some questionable requirements, this was a very thoughtful class that is crucial to my major. Exams were easy if you did read said material but in my personal opinion the textbook was fun to read. The only slight grudge would be his group project. The class was fun in general as it was very social.
