Doesn't really know what he is talking about. He might be a good programing teacher? But for Intro to comps......... not good. Gets off topic to much. Lectures contridict the text book..... a lot.
I entered this class as a prerequisite, so I expected the class to be a bit slow. However, Professor Ross says he usually doesn't teach this class. We constantly get off topic. I feel bad 4 those who know nothing about computers and still know nothing
I dropped the class because he is a pompous know-it-all and rude to students.
This class is cake. If you know anything about computers you will get an A in his class... how could u not like that. If u know your ish this class is money. Im guessing the people that gave negatives grew up in the dark ages.
Very easy on HW assignments and goes over a lot of it in class. Very nice guy overall and willing to help work through problems. May not know every trick in the book, but works through problems in class. If you take notes and pay attention, even single-celled creatures could get an 'A'.
Class is casual and extremely fun. All content is covered and reviewed several times. He allows you to choose your own programming language for all coding assignements. If you have prior programming experience, take notes, and listen during class, you have complete control over the grade you recieve.
A nice guy. The Class was kind of easy.
This class touches on a bunch of concepts covered in other classes, with a bit of a unique spin. The class I took was very slow in content, you don't really learn rocket science. Homework was graded on a turn-it-in-get-10-points basis. Overall, it was kinda cool and interesting for those dealing with, say, MySQL -- but little other application.,
He is extremely boring! Terrible inappropriate jokes. I struggle to stay awake in class and ended up dropping because I don't learn a thing. But his grading is easy.
Dr. Ross is an outstanding instructor. Just do your homework and listen/pay attention to his lectures and you will benefit from his teachings. Also just prepare well for the exam and attend regularly. Very helpful and a kind teacher. Always smiles and open for any questions that may arise. Follows along book & gives examples for homework.
Dan's an excellent instructor, and he helps his students with all aspects of the cirriculum.
Discrete math is a difficult class, and Professor Ross clearly explained the topics. He made it seem simple. His humor is a bit different, but I think it added some interest to some rather dry subject matter. If you do the homework, he grades fairly easy.
Dan is very knowledgeable about all the subjects he teaches. This knowledge was obviously gained from practical experience, not exclusively from academic work. 4/5 for easiness means he's easy as long as you attend class and pay attention. He teaches complex courses, but grades fairly and only tests on what was covered thoroughly in class.
Considering I took the class online, I cant say much about this professor. However, he grades very easily, as long as you follow directions.
Easy class, not a bad teacher though the lectures were rather dry. Just make sure you always do the home work and be ready for the quizes, because those two things essentially make up your entire grade, that's all he collects from you all year except for your final project which should be a snap.
I took this course online, but it was really easy! i loved taking it. i really no nothing about computers and i passed with an A. The professor is really nice and answered all my questions.
I took the course online. It was very easy. The course was very useful. It gave me a better understanding about Computer Science. Overall the Professer and Course was very good.
It is Intro into Computers -- it is SUPPOSED to be borine. Ross is too cool, his humor just goes over a lot of students heads. He is crazy smart and he'll give you an A if you just learn the basics.
He's a cool teacher. At first he seems a little weird, but when u get used to him, its all good! He's very nice, and cares!
I really liked Professor Ross. He's a very nice guy and is very fair about grading and assignments. He has an endearing childlike goofiness to him. He also knows his stuff and is good at explaining computer science. I'd definitely recommend him for this class. I'll be taking him for future computer classes.
He is a great teacher.Very smart. He has a unique personality, but he is a very nice guy!
He is a bit scatter brained. It seems like he is day dreaming through the class and it's sometimes hard to follow his lecture, especially since he mumbles sometimes. Overall, he is a great teacher. If you get the main ideas, the class is a cake walk.
very dry.. boring. and even though its an entry level class, after the first 3-5 chapters, it gets very difficult. like a foreign language but the translation is very hard to follow along.
He lectures every class he is very boring you take notes. You can use notes and textbook on some of the tests. His tests are kinda hard depending on how good your notes are. They aren't short test either they take the whole time very indepth. Overall it was an easy A or B if you take notes, for me it was hard material to learn.
OMG Professor Ross is totally awesome!!!!!!! I learned soooomuch about computers and stuff in his class! Prof Ross rocks!
excellent teacher... take em he is boring but just do hw and leave nothing blank on his tests try everything u will get an A...and go to his ask em questions good help there
Dan is a great guy. He knows what he needs to, but is always open to new ideas. 312 is an into class. He treats it that way. Encourages you to explore engineering, especially in things that are relevant to you. The book is only used for the first 1/3 of the class, but he has packets that are mostly very detailed. He's that cool kinda weird.
Ross knew the material and was very helpful. The book was only used for the first half of the term, but he had very helpful handouts for the rest. He encourages his students to think for themselves and is open to discussing differing ideas with them. I look forward to taking another one of his classes.
Possesses a quirky sense of deadpan humor. Enthusiastic and passionate about his subjects; his long experience in programming shows and he provides amusing (but functional!) sample source code for study. Don't be a dull mook in his classes; be involved! He appreciates hard work and enthusiasm. Responds cheerfully to emails and office visits.
Ross is easy to get along with and is always willing to help if you can't get it on your own. He knows what he is teaching but is open for new methods or ideas. I'd take his class again.
He does have a quirky sense of humor but that comes with the kind of brilliance he has. Smart man. Very kind and willing to be flexible with lectures to stop and help or explain further. He is very available to help any student.
fun class if you are into engineering. very hands on because its a lab/lec class. easy to get along with and if you do the work you will pass easily.
Very intelligent man. I guess he expects you to know about engineering before you get to the class because he sometimes wouldn't explain things clearly and in simpler terms. It felt like we went from creating kmaps (easy) to the final project (hard) without anything in between. But I learned a lot from him and he's funny. Never used the book.
Nice guy with a sense of humor. He gives good help during office hours and via email. Lectures were good at beginning of semester when we reviewed stuff from the prereq, but didn't cover the newer, harder things nearly as well. Tests were alright, not too hard, but took time to complete.
As an arts major I constantly was wondering what was happening in his class. He is a decent teacher but makes the subject a bit harder for those who have 0 experience with computers. Constantly references gaming which I did not understand most of. Overall, I just relied on homework and tests (which you can use a cheat sheet on)
If you decide to take this class online, just know that it is entirely self taught. Although it is mainly informational, there are no online lectures from the professor, so be prepared to read and keep up with your work! Overall it is a very easy and important class for all Computer Science majors so if you need it, take it with Ross!
Professor Ross was a really cool professor. His teaching style is really repetitive so the information really sticks. He's pretty entertaining and is very reasonable about the course and what's expected. I would take another CS class from him.
Took engineering circuits, drawing, and C programming. Ross is my favorite professor ever. He lays a heavy path of examples to prepare you for fair tests in all his classes, but his awkward humor and quiet shuffling around make him my favorite. He is the most human professor you will have at FLC, and he is absolutely sincere.
He''s super nice and I really like his sense of humor His teaching is really clear as well and if you''re confused he will help you. I really like him. I haven''t taken any tests yet though so I don''t know what those are like.
Professor Ross is awesome! He teaches everything with lots of really easily understandable examples while adding humor along the way. The only class I actually enjoyed going to. Be sure to pay attention during his lectures and do the homework and you're good.
His lectures can be pretty confusing and sometimes he confuses himself. But he is very helpful and always there for you if you need help. The class is very easy and can be fun with the big group project at the end of the semester. Do the daily assignments and you will have no problem passing with an 'A'.
Mr. Ross is funny and is a pretty chill professor. He's nice and explains computer jargon to where even non-computer majors can understand what he's talking about. Homework consists of chapter outlines & in book questions. All in all he's a good professor!
Best class ever. Prof Ross is super intelligent and his method of teaching is really great. He's cares about his students and is there for you if you have questions. He makes class fun and he has a good sense of humor. Would take him again no question.
Professor Ross is hilarious and a great teacher. He grades extremely light (says he loves to give everyone A's) tons of homework, almost every class homework is due, 3 tests (no big deal, you can bring a cheat sheet), an online final, and a research paper. Do participate in class and don't make fun of his games--great professor overall.
Prof Ross, really knows his subject matter as well as know how to teach the material for students to understand. He is funny yet intelligent, fair and very knowledgeable! Show respect by doing your homework with care, and you'll do great! He is the best professor on campus!
Really knows the subject and helpful if you ask for it. Do your homework and go to class! He's funny and inspirational if you are into the subject.
Let me start out by saying that he is hilarious. It was a once a week, 3 hour class and we usually got out an hour earlier. He made the lectures bearable by filling in some jokes here and there. Enjoyed his class and the projects we had in it. There is a lot of HW though but its justifiable. And if you into programming then it's fun as well.
One of the best CS teachers in Los Rios. I had the choice of taking him or Tak. I'm very very happy I took Ross for CISP 440. You do a short programming project every week and a short math assignment. There is one real test and that's the final, and a take home test. Great teacher, very clear and knows a lot.
Awesome professor. Taught me so much, and very helpful with questions! Best professor out there if you want to learn computer science!! Really!!
Ask Prof Ross a question and he will have an answer. He is so intelligent in so many areas. He's probably the best computer science teacher around, PLUS he's an engineer and knows that too! Go to class!! Do your homework!! And you will do well.
Show that you care, do your homework and show up to class
Study, don't be a slacker
Very knowledgeable!!
Clear and helpful throughout the class. Maintains a positive teacher to student relationship even after class is over. Very encouraging and straightforward. I definitely recommend him as a teacher!
Professor Ross has been very nice. His homework might be tough at first, but it gets easier as you turn in more work with the proper formatting. The conceptual part of the class is easy to get, just read the book. Coding in his class is tough and Ross knows that. He gives away partial code to help us out. Also, his jokes are pretty funny!
Great professor. My class only had an hour and 30 minutes of lecture time... First program was a challenge for me, but all the other concepts are very easy. Did not get to finish everything that was on the class schedule because the class kept leaving 20 minutes early and professor let us do that. Easy to understand and take notes!
Professor Ross is a quirky guy, he's awesome 10/10 would take again. His classes are always fun!
Professor Ross was very thorough in teaching the material required. Had a lot of fun with the group project at the end of the class!
All of Ross's classes are easy. He clearly explains the material and goes over the code that we need to use on our homework. He even provides comments in the code to help us understand what is going on. He also lets us use notes on his tests. As long as you do all the HW, you should get an A.
Prof. Ross is the best prof. you can ever have for computer science classes. His teachings cover a lot of topics, and most of them are comparable to upper level courses at CSU and UC. A lot of homework, but you learn a lot
Take him if you want to learn and get an easy A. All you have to do is show up to class and pay attention to his lectures. This class was really enjoyable because he has a good sense of humor and likes to tell interesting stories. His review for the final prepared me well for the final exam. I am going to take him again for Discrete Structures.
The guy waits till 10pm on monday the week classes start to give you any information about the class just to find out the wrong edition of the required text book is listed on the flc website. Might be a good in class professor but you might as well drop the online class if you want to have time to enjoy your life.
An absurd amount of homework. Be prepared to spend at least 10 hrs a week on homework. He took what should be a fun subject and turned it into a straight grind. Also doesn't use Canvas for an online class. He uses his own website that looks like it was made in 1990. You have to email him your assignments instead of uploading them.
His assignments were great for learning the concepts. He has his own "textbooks" so no need to buy one unless want extra material. He's not a tough grader but you still have to work for a good grade. Remember it's your duty to learn; all those mean comments about him shouldn't be there. Be a self-learner and you'll succeed later. Has funny jokes.
Nice easy going guy. Lots of hw, but it was pretty fun. Gives freedom to do things your way, just put the effort and care that goes a long way with him. I learned a lot in this class. Book was waste of $$ use his e-notes and other resources. I plan to take him for cisp430. Lots of learning on your own, but pretty common for cs classes in general.
Homework is basic but time-consuming.
UC Davis Grad, waited til after grad to give review. Turns out D. Ross is THE BEST professor I've ever had. Though we didn't quite see eye-to-eye, so much that I almost dropped his class, I ended up taking 3 courses with him (CISP 360/430/440). Without a doubt, I got a 3.7GPA at Davis b/c of D. Ross and his courses. He will make you a better coder!
Awesome Professor, very instructional lectures, homework takes a bit of time but you learn lots. Also, an extremely underrated sense of humor!! D
Seriously he does not care! Lectures make no sense and he doesn't use text book. He is never in his office hours. You have been warned.
Lectures are all over the place, although he has started writing out his notes and posting them online which has been a godsend. But he makes you print out your program code on a sheet of paper with a screenshot of the console output which is beyond stupid
Sometimes it seems like he is teaching everything for the first time even when he's been a prof for like 20 years. Very nice guy. For drawing and design just show up. Very fun class if you're creative.
Round time for answering emails is 5+ days. The students created a discord to try to figure it out what we are supposed to do. No one has any idea. His emails when he does respond are short and lack substance and give no guidance as to what we are doing. None of us know our grade. He doesn't use Canvas, he uses his own website.
Ross had some issues with respond to people's emails at the beginning of the semester, but he seems to be on top of things now. This class is REALLY easy. His HW is just completion based. He has his own website, so that takes a bit of adjusting to. Class is fun, you learn stuff, easy A.
Gave us way more work than was necessary to understand the concepts. Made use do a 51 level recursion by hand. Not fun. Understood the concept by recursion 10. 51 was just too much.
Hw 60% of grade, Final 30%, participation 10%. Weekly homework consists of conceptual problems in the book he provides, then the next week will be its implementation via C. His helper code is messy, but just finish the work the easy way without revamping all of it. He seems to grade easily, so you only get the most from this class as you put out
You know ahead of time what is expected of you so you can prepare ahead. Bombed a quiz and redid it and he accepted the better grade! Also wasn't able to download a program for an assignment and offered me a writing assignment instead. DOES NOT care about your writing format. Just show him that you're doing the work and you should be fine. Easy A
Took him during COVID. I think he's better at teaching in a physical classroom than online but in the end he will teach you the basics of data structures. There was some coding (C/C++) involved but it wasn't object oriented heavy. He provided a textbook that were his class notes. There was an assignment due each week and only one exam, the final.
If youve seen Ready Player One, hes just James Halliday if James Halliday loved SpaceX. Hes great at teaching circuits. Ive been taught circuits poorly before so I know the difference. He goes on tangents sometimes but its always interesting if youre in engineering. Take him if you can, for engineering graphics as well. Nice grader as well.
Took during Covid. Easy A, most of grade is based on hw 60% and final 30% and lecture outlines. you need to pass the final to pass class. Hw is coding or draw diagram of data structs which is tedious,so start early. He seems to have got the online format down in spring 2021. HIs lectures are ok, he sometimes rambles but funny.
Lectures are youtube videos. As with my experience in his CISP 440 class, it's the same. Easy A, but you learn as much as you put out. Teacher is pretty funny and easy to understand.
I really enjoyed 430 with Prof Ross. All his class materials are accessible through a single URLthe organization made it easy for me to succeed in the class. He explains concepts well, and is very responsive to email. The homeworks can be time consuming but are helpful and necessary for learning the material. You can tell he loves what he teaches.
Loved taking Ross's class for CISP 430 and 440. All the class material, assignments, and video lectures on a website. Lectures were easy to understand and go over concepts well, often incorporating his sense of humor into some parts of it. If you get stuck on something, email him and he can hint you in/help. Opportunities for EC. Trust me, take him
Professor Ross is very interesting. His YouTube lectures were very long, so I would always find another YouTube video that could explain it a little faster. I'm sure his lectures were great but it was just too long for me. You will not regret taking this professor's class.
TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Dan Ross is the most down to earth instructor I've ever met at FLC, and you'll walk away from the class with a deep understanding of discrete math. He's passionate about the subject, makes the lectures and assignments fun, and is great at making complex concepts clear. Don't waste your time considering other, less attentive profs
The class curriculum covered lots of topics, including AVL and B Trees. Online lectures helped get the homework done. Some of the homework was a bit tedious (lots of hand executions and diagramming as opposed to actual programming), but overall really forgiving grading criteria (majority of your grade is based on homework). Flexible deadlines.
Our lectures nearly directly addressed the homework, so there wasn't as much confusion. There were 4 exams and no "final" and generally everyone in the class did well. There were a handful of challenging homework problems and the exams were similar to the homework with occasionally some extra tricks involved/changes to the circuit.
Prof. Ross made a really challenging class super easy and digestible by giving good lectures and encouraging practice. His homework is worth 50% of your grade, but it's not easy. It has to be very detailed and neat. It was annoying at first, but it really encouraged me to put in the effort and helped me learn the content with ease.
This course doesn't feel like it fits into the criteria of a 3 unit course. His accessibility to online lectures makes this class easier to work on from home but it feels like he takes that into account and just dumps on extra mind numbing work to even it all out. This course is just a stepping stone but he assigns hw like we only have one class.
Professor Ross was a pretty good lecturer, but the tedious busywork in completing the homework was unbearable sometimes. Sometimes the diagrams (so many diagrams) really helped nail the concepts home, but I would've preferred to focus on programming the structures rather than diagramming them efficiently. Simply soul-draining homework.
I took Professor Ross's CISP 430 & 440 courses. I wish took all my CS classes with him. He is a really nice lecturer. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about CS . Take his courses if you are serious CS and want to learning about discrete math & data structures. Yes, he assign a lot of homework, but it will be useful for your future studies.
Prof. Ross has the best class structure of all the async courses in the Los Rios system. He provides access to his notes/videos at the start, so you can work ahead. He's funny and does a great job connecting discrete math with CS concepts. This is a crucial CS class, so give yourself enough time each week to learn and do HW if you want to succeed.
While this was an in-person course he allowed us to email outlines instead which was great. Lectures are long but very helpful. I agree with those that mentioned that they would've preferred to focus more on programming than diagramming but overall still learned a lot even with the many topics we covered. Generous n fast with grading for a cs prof
This class is great for taking in the first semester of college. He has quizzes which you can take as many times as you want. The final is two big projects, and no tests. There is homework for each chapter from the book, so make sure to read the book if you want to learn. He is accessible outside of class!
Professor Ross's lectures are pretty easy to follow and his graphics class was fun but time consuming. Most of the assignments were enjoyable with minimal busy work/pointless assignments.
He's fun in his own awkward way and if you can get past his odd personality he's a really chill, cool professor. The work can be tedious but after transferring to Cal Poly I'm so far ahead just by understanding every little thing. Has his own textbook for the course which saved me money. Get 2-4 hours ready per week for hw + lecture vid.
Really kind and caring person and has clear instructions and lectures. He made hard classes easy to learn when you put in the effort. His lectures are even helping me in my upper division courses. 11/10 recommend. Took for 312/400.
Tough but worth it. He's really good at teaching the material and answering student questions. If you can, go to the in-person lectures. The homework can be time consuming, but you will learn from it
Before taking this class, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using a Windows or MacBook. Professor Ross's lectures are clear and easy to follow for visual learners. Work consists of drawings, which are time-consuming. Near the end of the semester, be aware of a group project. Overall, great professor
He's literally the GOAT of computer science professor's. His lectures are all posted week by week and he keeps his class very organized. His grading criteria is very clear and he's lenient on the grading. Just do all your work and do it well and you should be fine.
Professor Ross is honestly really great, for 440 he lays out the steps for you to succeed. I don't mean this metaphorically either, literally for some assignments he gives you steps toward the answer. He provides everything, attendance is taken in lecture or as outline notes. Just follow his instructions and you will be good
One of the best professors I ever had. He is supportive and fast to respond to any of your problems. I highly recommend it to any passionate CS student.
His homework consists of both bookwork problems and coding assignments every week. The coding seems intimidating but they're usually much more simpler to complete than they look. The bookwork does get harder overtime, but he's a lenient grader so don't stress too much about full completion. He's been actively making his class easier which helps.
Professor Ross taught the Discrete Structures course so that it was not just another awful mathematics course, where I would normally leave feeling confused and defeated. His notes and lectures were very down to earth, coupled with his practical coding applications really helped me actually understand the mathematical concepts in the book.
Mr. Ross where have you been all my life. Best CS prof I've had out of all CS classes I've taken in Los Rios. His style of teaching is clear, with recorded lecture videos. Quizzes, weekly assignments, & attendance matters for points. Only thing is i STILL struggle with the coding aspect of data structures; the diagram drawings are easier to learn!
Took this Spring 2023. For aspiring EEE/CpE students, this is one of, if not the most important class for obtaining foundational knowledge. Watch every video lecture and download his PDF notes because you WILL reference them later on. The HW and exams are VERY time-consuming, so prioritize them first. Get started on the final written project early.
Guy acts like this is the only class ur taking. Insane amounts of hw, entirely unreasonable for a 3unit class. Treats it like a grad class and lectures are rushed and missing sometimes. Think 40 problems with 10 steps each all in a formal document. And doing math on a pc already sucks. Doesnt give students time to learn, just busywork
I took Prof Ross because so many rated him so highly. Not sure if he has had some life event that has changed the quality of instruction, but it is so much work, badly explained. Would not take again ever, for any reason. This 3 unit class will take so many more hours than even "hard" 4 unit comp sci classes... Recommend looking elsewhere.
was too much homework. only take this class online if you are only taking this class the whole semester. his assignments need to be half the problems he gives to even be feasible. it will take 20+hrs of ur week no joke. you need to watch lecttures, do outlines, do readings, do extra rding, do bookwork, do quizzes, do coding assnments. not possible
course material is way too hard and the lectures are good, but still need to selfstudy. the lectures try to cover more than they should for students to properly understand the concepts. Way too much homework, you'll never even understand half the assignments because he goes from 0 to 100 difficulty real fast.
Took his 430 class and it was nothing like 440. This 440 course HAS SO MUCH WORK!!! YT lecture videos, outlines, bookwork questions, quizzes, and implementation assignments EVERY WEEK. This class was difficult and definitely hard to understand IMO. Bookwork is very annoying with so many questions. Skip this class and take another 440 IM WARNING YOU
Took his 440 class this semester. His lectures are great and he does have a lot work to do on some weeks, but he makes it doable as he is a very fair grader. However it's no means an 'easy A,' you have to earn it and do the work. He is understanding and his lectures and course structure are clear. Overall very good professor.
Not that bad of a class and he grades nicely enough. Homework is way too excessive and too much time was spent on this class for me. Feel like he does not acknowledge a life outside this class. Would spend class time trying to find more for us to do for homework. There are no exams and just quizzes though, which is really nice.
Professor Ross has an engaging teaching style, though can be quirky at times. The workload is heavy, but the course material is invaluable. I found Unstuckstudy and ChatGPT helpful for study prep. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding class.
Prof was great. Uses email instead of canvas, and assignments are on his website. This means you can work ahead. He also clearly explains how to do the assignments in video lectures also on his website.
Great lectures, walks you through how to do homework. As long as you follow his assignemt template you'll been all good. Also provides lots of time to get partial credit on late assignments.
Relatively simple classes, his grading criteria is clear and easy to follow. The lectures are either in person or online. If you go to class you get attendance credit, if not you have to submit outlines online. Funny guy and super cool to talk to, would definitely take him again for both
An interesting class, but a nightmare for someone who procrastinates a lot like me. Lecture and project weekly; the contents are quite complicated. I had to do some self-study outside of class or watch the lecture multiple times to understand the concepts. But if you truly want to learn something, this is the right class!
Professor Ross was great and fair with grading, made sure everyone passed if they put in effort, problem sets are worth a lot of your grade , be sure to do all of them. Four exams , no final. I took him for my prior CISP classes and do not regret it. Prof Ross is the goat. put in effort and show you care, and pass .
