Dr. Dan is the best chem teacher in the department. His class is so easy cause he does such a great job of teaching it!! He makes chemistry interesting!! plus he's a biker! Come on how much cooler can you get!! :-)
Great teacher. Help sessions are key. Always interesting to learn chemistry from a biker.
Good teacher. Explained stuff well. Quizzes were hard sometimes, but you knew the material when Test time came around. Plus, he's a cool guy. Come on, he's a biker! He's automatically a cool guy!
An awesome professor. I'm talking TOP NOTCH! Really knows his stuff. He makes Chemistry fun. He's also a biker & really into HAM radio. I took it with Furtch in the fall and made a D with an A Lab Average. I'm taking it again with Swartling & making an A.
Great teacher! Very helpful and knows his stuff.

Pretty easy and a really good teacher. If you go to class and do go in the lab you will make A or B.
Chem sucks, Swartling made it fun.
An Awesome Teacher, Coolest guy on the planet
Dr. Dan is the BOMB! Entertaining and informative.

He's a great teacher & is always willing to explain everything out in class if needed. His help sessions are something you shouldn't miss. Loved the experiments he did in class!
A very good professor. Makes class easy because he teaches the course very well.
He is an awesome teacher and really knows what he is doing. Even though the class was hard, he taught it really well and made it fun. I loved him; take him if you can!!
Good teacher. However, his class is not easy by any means. Note it seems that if he likes you he is much more helpful than if not. I received little help.
Dr. Swartling is probably the best instructor I had in college. His class isn't easy, but he is willing to help anytime. He is easy to understand and makes a real effort to make things clear if you ask. He is the bees knees!
Dr. Dan is great! The class is HARD, but he is a lot of fun. We're always waiting to see what wacky story he's going to tell next or what he's going to wear to class each day. He's definitely THE professor to take in any chemistry class possible!
I was good at chemistry but I did well in his class. He will keep you interested if you attend class.
A really cool guy, pretty funny. A tough class..but you can tell he tries. Chemistry is just hard
I LOVE DR. DAN!
this class sucks
An awesome class. Mad man Dr. Dan made chemistry even cooler. He does all sorts of cool demonstrations in class from setting hyrdrogen on fire to playing with liquid nitrogen. Maybe not the best chem teacher, but def the most fun.
This teacher is da bomb! He manages to take chemistry and make it fun! Plus he likes to blow things up :)
The best organic teacher on campus. I love Dr. Dan!!!!!
Best Organic teacher by far!!! I had him first 1/2 and wish he was teaching this semester. will do anything for students. He has LONG(4hr) test that are hard, but he is worth taking. TRUST ME
good prof but pretty tough, but what chem prof won't be?! he is a great laugh & does experiments throughout the semester to get the point across.
Great Professor! Dr. Dan is funny and gets his subject across well. Quizes are more conceptual, and you better be good with equations. He's very helpful and never turns a student away.
AWESOME- Dr. Dan is hands down my favorite teacher at tech or for that matter any other school. He is a fantastic teacher and he is also a christian. I'll give him an A++++++
He didn't want to be there teaching the lower level chemistry.
Awesome teacher, a biker for jesus, teaches good, tests and quizzes are quite hard, but he explains well, GO TO CLASS you must to PASS
I will say that Dr. Swartling does a decent job teaching, but you cannot ask that many any questions outside of class. He makes you feel stupid if you do not understand something. He could be a bit nicer to his students. Also, his lectures only cover the powerpoints and no other examples.
Dr. Swartling is awesome. He can teach, speaks English, knows what he teaches, and has a sense of humor. His class isn't too hard, if you are at least ok at math. It isn't an easy A, but an A is definately possible (I got one.) He helps ppl via WebCT this semester and usually responds quickly.
Swartling hates this class more than you do. How can he be a good teacher if he doesn't want to teach. If you can, take Northrup.
He is an awesome teacher and really knows what he is doing. Even though the class was hard, he taught it really well and made it fun. I loved him; take him if you can!!
Dr. Dan is, by far, the best organic teacher on campus.
Dr. Dan's the man.
Dr. Dan is awesome! This man knows his chemistry and is in my opinion one of the best teachers on campus! Definitely take him for Chem 1110 and 1120.
His hour exams are a little hard, but Dr. Swartling honestly cares about you as much as you care about yourself and your grades. He will bend over backward for you. He is understanding and gets his points across clearly, while at the same time interesting you. DEFINETELY take Swartling for organic.
He is interested in helping people period.
If anyone wants to get through Orangic without going gray, you need to take Dr. Dan. Avoid Kline like the plague. Kline will only lead to confusion and misery. Dr. Dan will lead to happiness and fun. Dr. D. is clear, knowledgeable, and he does not try to trick you with picky questions on tests. Take him at all costs.
Dr. Dan is awesome! Organic is extremely hard, but he is a really great teacher. He explains things well and makes organic alot more interesting. If you have a choice, take him!!!!!!
He is a great teacher. His lectures aren't all boring like other professors are...he usually jokes and has fun but still gets his point across and tries to make sure you understand it. If he sees that you put forth effort in the class he will help you out a lot. And he had purple hair this semester.
Great professor. If you have to take organic, he's the teacher to have. His tests are hard but he gives you time. Hard class but not impossible. Avoid Kline.
Great prof. Interesting. Statistically(based off of exam scores) best teacher of this class at tech. Take him at all costs!! Makes cool baloon animals and puts them in liquid nitrogen!
He is pretty cool, likes to blow things up and stuff like that. Hardest class I have ever taken and somehow pulled a B. I guess he bumped everyones. Make sure you do all extra credit oppurtunities and the OWL homework. It will help your grade out. Bring your laptop to class so you can play games while he lectures.
Dr. Swartling always made an effort to help out those who wanted to do their best in the class. Even though he stuck pretty much to the PowerPoint notes, he always took the time to work problems on the board and explain each concept thoroughly. If the class was hating OWL homework, he was more than happy to extend the deadlines.
Dr. Dan is a good teacher. He is willing to work with you if you need help. He offers a lot of extra credit. His quizzes are easier than the other chemistry professors. He holds study sessions before most quizzes & tests. He's even willing to push the OWL back if everyone needs a litte extra time. He's a funny guy. Take him if you can!!!
Dr. Swartling has got to be the coolest teacher I've ever had. He knows what he's talking about, and if you don't understand, he'll be more than happy to help. He treats everyone fairly, so no favorites. Take him if you can! You'll learn your stuff and you'll gain a valuable reference.
I love Dr. Dan! He is an awesome teacher and really tries to help those who ask! He is willing to do help sessions before quizzes and exams. Though the class is hard, he teaches really it well and his tests are long but fair. He gives several EC opportunites which is always nice. I def. recommend anyone to take him for organic 1&2! He's great!
Dr. Dan's class isn't easy because it's organic chemistry and because his tests will make you THINK. He gives you plenty of time to take tests, though, and will help you understand each chapter. Lectures are crystal clear. Quizzes are 100% reasonable. He won't let your lab grade hurt you.
Dr. Dan is the man. However, organic chemistry sucks. Period. He really tries to explain everything thoroughly and often gives EC and help sessions. Lab is not that difficult, even if you do have Crouse. Quizzes are fair, tests are hard, but MAKE you THINK. Do ALL homework problems in chapter and at end of chapter. Go to class. Study, Study, Study!
Organic chemistry is a difficult subject, but he is very good at explaining topics clearly. Quizzes are easy, exams are more difficult, but there are numerous extra credit opportunities. He also does help sessions before quizzes and exams that are extremely helpful. He is definitely the best option for Organic.
Dr Dan is an awesome professor. The class itself, is very rigorous and difficult. His quizzes are multiple choice and his exams are feared by many. His lectures are very clear and he will do his best to help you understand the material. Overall, best organic professor in the dept.
Dr. Dan is one of two Chemistry professors that are worth taking for 1110/1120. The other is Dr. Northrup. Dr. Swartling's class revolves around powerpoint, a few in-class demonstrations, and the occasional display of awesomeness that Organic Chem Professors have. He makes the class interesting, but it is difficult. He does balloon art too!
Although I hate chemistry..Dr.Dan made the class very interesting. He always offered extra credit opportunities too! He sticks to the powerpoint for his lectures, but his quizzes really prepared me for all of the exams.
This class isn't nearly as hard as some would like you to believe. Yes Chemistry itself is hard but I believe this department holds your hand far more than it should. Those who do bad are typically goof offs that shouldn't be in engineering anyway. Swartling always has the highest tests averages and his study sessions are pure gold. Take him!
Dr. Swartling makes chemistry fun. He does many in class experiments that are very interesting. Dr. Swartling is the best 1110 professor in my opinion, and his in class quizzes prepare you well for the exams. He gives a quiz over each chapter and web assign hw. He also gives extra credit. He really cares too!
He is one of the better professors who teach 1110 and he is a pretty cool laid back guy. He teaches straight from the notes you buy in the bookstore. Lectures seem to be great and everything but you will soon realize that he doesn't really teach you a single thing. None of the notes help for hw problems. Also his 30 problem quizzes over each chapter are very difficult (I did 10-15 points better on the exam than my highest quiz grade)
I guess he is a very thorough teacher, but he has a very monotone voice which makes it hard for me to stay interested. I usually just do the OWL Homework during class on my laptop while he is lecturing. There is no point in taking notes because the notes are all online. You will do fine in the class if you do the OWL Homework and understand it.
he's cool.
Prof. Swartling is the best to be found at TTU, He is funny but also teaches in a way you can understand. Will never take any other instructor for Chem.
Dr. Swartling took over my organic chemistry class for the last part of the semester. Before he got there, I was in danger of failing. He really helped me by answering any questions I had. And I passed with a high C, since it was so late in semester! I love Dr. Swartling. He is hilarious & all professors should be like him.
Study and it is not nearly as hard as people let on
What a great professor. Lectures were very clear and he taught in such a way as "Chemistry for Dummies". Always had a fun demonstration to show the concept. Offered plenty of fun extra credit opportunities. Always willing to help. Exams and quizzes are identical for all CHEM 1110 classes. Online H/W was lengthy and difficult. All around good class.
Dr. Dan is a cool guy. He's good at teaching you the information, and he's pretty funny. Chem 1120 is just a brutal class. The quizzes are fairly manageable if you study. The OWL homework is terrible. The exams are rough. Swartling is an awesome professor, the class is just hard, but you'll know that if you're going into it.
Dr.Dan is pretty tough but knows his stuff. Very eccentric and somewhat narcissistic. Take Northrup if at all possible.
Dr. Dan is the man, this class just sucks. With my class We didn't have any online homework and he always gave a review session before a test of quiz. His quizzes are difficult, the tests are work. If you show that you are trying you'll get a good grade. Lab helps a lot, too.
Also had him for chem1110. Lecture seems boring with monotone voice but his examples will engage you. OWL homework is somewhat easy. It's outlined by the book if you read. Quizzes are challenging but okay if you follow his example prob. and read the book. he gives extra credit sometimes for attending things. i loved his demonstration w/ liquid "N"
Good professor. He moves faster than the other classes, but this leaves time for review sessions closer to test days. Stay on top of OWL and dont leave it all to get done is one or two days. There is extra credit offered: do it. Overall, I highly reccomend Dr. Swartling
Very helpful. Lectures clear and to the point. Gives extra credit opportunities. Really cares about students.
Honestly, every student that has had him before will tell you this semester he got awful. Despite any comments made before, he reads off the slide in a monotone voice everyday as well as gives the HARDEST quizzes in the chemistry department. DO NOT TAKE SWARTLING. I am a straight A student, and had to struggle to obtain a B. I do not recommend.
His tests are the most difficult in the department and the OWL homework assigned is generally 2-3 times the amount of other professors proctoring the same course. If he gets behind in a section, he will skip it and move on. I am attending both his lecture and Dr. Rezniak's lecture, and of the two, I would recommend Dr. Rezniak any day of the week!
Don't do it! Take Resniack or anyone other than Dr. Dan. Though He communicates, is course is very demanding and hard to keep up with.
Although he is a nice guy and seems funny, he is a TERRIBLE Gen Chem teacher. OWL is triple times more than any other class. And the way he teaches will make you want to skip his class. Do NOT take.
I do not recommend taking Dr. Swartling if you are looking for an easy A. Although sometimes challenging, his quizzes are an accurate reflection on what you can expect your exams to be like. He assigns more OWL homework than the other professors too. I received an A in this class, but it was not easy.
His class is harder than others, but his exam averages were the highest of all sections. No pain, no gain. I would take him again. I wish he was teaching Chem1120.
Great teacher. Quizzes aren't as hard as people say. The connect homework he assigns is really easy, and he is always pushing back the deadlines. His exam grades are always the highest, and it's because he's really a great teacher. He also lets you text him in class and he will answer it so you don't have to try to raise your hand.
One of the better teachers I've had here. Funny in class, knows the material very well, and willing to help. The textbook was almost completely worthless except for the mandatory online homework. Quizzes in his class are on paper exactly like the exams (other profs have online quizzes). Exams aren't hard if you're prepared. He's a good professor.
Dr. Dan is a good professor, the subject is just generally difficult. My only problem was that his lectures are extremely long and boring, but his quizzes do help prepare you for the exams.
Great professor! Really great at explaining things, and has help sessions before most quizzes! the quizzes are hard, but help prepare for the exam! his class always has the highest exam grade averages! Take if you're willing to put in effort and if you want to learn the material!
Dan Swartling is just awesome, dressed as Gandalf in our class and some of our class dressed as HIM. He was a great teacher for a decently difficult class. Dr. Swartling gave the class his number so that we could text him questions even during lectures and he would answer them. Some of the best days were his make-shift experiments in class.
Dr. Swartling is an amazing professor! Organic is a tough subject so be prepared to work hard! He makes sure to do a lot of examples for you in class. Make sure you do as many book problems as possible to be successful. If you need any extra help he is there for you. He gives you 3 hours to take exams so you do not have to be stressed for time.
He is by far my favorite professor in the chemistry department! He will go out of his way to help his students by offering study session at night and extra credit. He is awesome, and keeps class interesting
Gen Chem is hard, there is no way around it. Pay attention in lectures and study hard for quizzes and tests. Out of all the Chem 1 professors, he is one of the best. Not a bad professor, just a difficult course. He provided extra credit throughout the semester for dressing up on halloween, volunteering, etc.
The class has a lot of information in it, but he explains it pretty well!
I had Swartling for Honors Chemistry Recitation and his class was pretty experimental and fun. We made molecules out of balloons, got to use liquid nitrogen to make ice cream, and we played periodic table battleship. I highly recommend taking this if you are a chemistry major having to take an honors credit course. We only met once a week.
Dr. Swartling is a great professor for organic chemistry. I struggled with organic 1 (and am currently doing well in 2), but without him there's no way I would've passed organic 1. He always makes jokes and snarky remarks in class, and explains organic concepts very well. By far the best professor that teaches organic chemistry!
Dr. Dan is the GREATEST! I heard so many bad things before this class, but I'm so glad I had him as a professor. Doesn't just give you things to memorize, actually shows you how to work through hard problems. His exams are at night outside of class, but he works around schedules easily. Had out of class study sessions weekly to prepare for quizzes
Not a good teacher, worked problems inside of teaching the concepts, never answered an email all semester( which was all online). If you have a choice get a different teacher!!!!!
