One of the best at Loyola, midterm/final extra credit
Dan is the best professor I have ever had. His class is definitely challenging, but very worth all the work and effort. If you don't want homework, don't take his class, but if you want to know what college should be like, register!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Learned a lot and learned a lot about how to learn.
Excellent professor. You need to put in some effort, but midterm and final are extra credit.
This class requires A LOT of time. There's a lot of readings and homework. Quizzes at every class. But the work load and difficulty depends on the students in the class. He adjusts the intensity.
Dan is an AWESOME teacher. By far the best I've had. It is a challenging class and there is a lot homework, but it's worth it just to have the experience of being in his class. He shows genuine interest in students. He was born to teach.
Very good professor. Class is anything but boring. His Phil 120 class is about 5 hrs of work per week. If you don't do well on a quiz, his midterm and finals are extra credit.
Dan exceeds beyond a great professor. His class is challenging, but not in a difficult way. Yes, there is reading and assingments, but they are not any harder than any other college course. You do not have to write any papers, but have to go to class.
Dan Vailncourt is the worst teacher I've ever come across. He is unclear and expects everyone to swallow his philosophical bull **** which is untrue. And he gets his inspiration from NEIL DIAMOND!!! Are you kiddening???

I absolutely loved this class and this professor! I would strongly reccommend him to anyone. You have to put some effort into the class, but if you do, it will pay off. Very interesting. Offers lots of extra credit. Always there to help.
This is one of the best courses I've ever taken. If you don't do well in this class, don't blame Dan & Kathy, blame yourself for not allowing yourself to be flexible and creative enough to think and understand concepts in new ways.
Dan ensures that you get out of the class what you put into it. The classes were always interesting and engaging, which facilitates learning. I suspect those who are negative about his classes did not want to do the work.
Dan is an awesome teacher! He structures his classes like a job, you gotta show up. Love his grading system. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn.
Wow, that's all I have to say...I wish I hadn't signed up for this freakin' class! Now I'm facing having to drop this class...I really wonder who all these people are saying this class is so awesome. I don't know about them but I value my GPA.
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. In class he contradicts himself and I can never get a clear answer out of him. I don't know why he is teaching since all we seem to do is bull**** and crafts, but he won't give good grades.
I've taken two classes with this man and now work for him. He is by far the most outstanding teacher i've ever had at any level of school. Dan forces a work ethic on you that helps you in the rest of your college classes, your job, and your life.
Dan is the best teacher I've ever had. Brings philosophy first to your own level and then makes you broaden your ways of thinking. He is an incredible man and a phenomenal teacher. Dan and Kathy are inspiring.
This is an incredible class because it goes beyond teaching about a subject. Dan applies the lessons to your life. You have to be prepared, read and show up but you get more than what you pay for. I wish I could have taken him again.
Dan is an awesome professor and a great person. He expects a lot from his students, but he should--we are in college. Though the work is challenging, he is helpful and clear and you will take much with you from this class. DEFINITELY TAKE HIS CLASSES!!
Definately not a blowoff class. He encourages you to think. Instead of memorizing things by rote, he encourages you to use applications. Not boring, helpful, and clear. If you want to enjoy class, he's the best.
Dan is a terrific teacher and makes 120 a great experience. Work isn't challenging, but you need to be able to manage your time to do it. Excellent grading system. Wonderful class. Great teacher. What more can you ask for?
Dan makes the class seem easy but dont be fooled. You have to show up to every class or your grade goes down fast. Dan is very involved and helpfull but at times confusing. You learn a lot but the work load is huge.
The most influential teacher I have ever had! No other teacher has offered me as much as Dan has. While the class has a demanding workload, the grading system is very fair. If you do not get to meet Dan before you graduate, you have truly missed out!
Dan is one of the most interesting professors I have ever met! Don't be fooled, this is not an easy breezy class. There is no floating here. The class is difficult, but fun. You can't pull the wool over his eyes.
Dan is a great teacher. Always willing to help and Kathy's a pretty good TA. Makes the class really interesting and you end up taking a lot with you. By all means, try to take one of his classes!
best teacher i've ever had! his wife comes to every class to help, they are really cute! fun class, challengin, but fun
Dan has been the best teacher that I have had so far at Loyola. Although his class is demanding, if you do the work you will be more than fine. Alongside of Dan is his wife Kathy, who is also very helpful. I definitly recommend it!
Dan was such and awesome teacher... if everyone could take him im sure their whole view of learning would be changed. His class is in high demand but if you can try to get into one of his classes!!!
Top notch teaching..Dan is so personal and guides you, doesn't lecture!!! By far one of the greatest teachers in my life.. I have now taken 3 classes with him and recommend him for any.
Best ever. PERIOD. This is why Loyola costs so much :) He encourages and truly cares, more than any other prof anywhere. It's a tough class, but this weeds out people who just do not want to work. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Such a nice guy, and very clear, too. But his class sucks. His format does not work for philosophy. Gives you 10 minute essay quizzes on difficult analytical topics. Philosophy is about discussion, not a pre-memorized correct answer. Take McGinnis.
Dan is really great, and so is Cathy, his wife/assisant. They'll help you when you need it and understand if you are having problems. Take his class if you can, because he's very inspiring.
by far the most enthusiastic and most dedicated teacher i've ever had. he made learning philosophy interesting. even though the class was at 8:30am i looked forward to going everyday.absolutely take him if you can, it will change your outlook on eduation
His teaching style demands hard work but it is worth it.
INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!!INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!!INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!!INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!!INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!!INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!! INCREDIBLE!!!INCREDIBL
I loved Dan and Kathy (his wife and aid). He is a wonderful teacher and wonderful person. Class is not easy, but is defenitly worth it. I got an A, but I worked hard for it. I will defenitly try to take him again. Yay for Dan and Kathy!
Simply amazing professor. This was the best experience in my college career thus far! The class is a lot of work, but it is so rewarding! Take this professor at all costs!!
Dan is an amazing person. Rarely do you feel such love from a teacher. His essays are hard and push you to do better. Be sure to do the reading before class.
Dan is the best prof/teacher I've had in my entire life. Seems difficult at first, but if you put work into it, it will pay off. He is as an amazing person and I enjoyed every minute of his class. I would not take anyone else besides him for philosophy. AMAZING.
This professor is just amazing. The class is hard work, but if you are willing to work hard then this class is for you. I not only enjoyed this professor, but learned a great deal. His class is not a walk in the park; it requires work, but in the end it is rewarding. HE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dan is the best teacher i have ever taken in my life! The work is challenging but he makes it so interesting and fun that you will end up enjoying it and want to do it. Highly recommend that everyone take this class, even if they dont have to, before they graduate!
Dan is incredible. The best class so far taken at Loyola. Is an assett to philosophy and makes me want to go to class everyday (even though it is at 8:00am). If you have the chance, take this class, you wont be dissapointed. A+++++++++
You must take this class. It is life changing. Dan and Kathy, thank you for all you do.
Dan is a great teacher, one of the best on campus. He challenges you and then when you fall he picks you back up and continues to challenge you. His wife, Kathy, is also great. They are both inspirations.
I have stronger words, but let's just call him not a very tolerant person. Don't miss any class time, unless you want to get completely screwed over...I can understand the glowing reviews, some people really like him, but if you can take anyone else, I STRONGLY suggest it
Taking this class was a mistake. The teacher will tell you in the first class, that he doesn’t want you to be a good dog. However, that is the biggest lie. Student must agree 100% with the teacher; otherwise, she/he will not get good grade, or she/he would be told to drop the class due to low grade.
Inconsistent: Get something right but not worded just so & it's still wrong. So much for concept is more than specifics. Huge syllabus. Acted concerned when I bailed to take something better-more concern than I got while in the class. If you like him, you can have him. No accounting for taste.
Hmmm. I wonder if the people griping about Dr. V. are the ones who were sleeping in the back. It was a great class. Life-altering in fact. Take him...if you dare!!
Horrible teacher, horrible grading policy, good personality if you like that kind of BS in a teacher. Essays daily in class with minimal time to complete them - better make sure you read and memorize everything even though he says it's not necessary to do...he's pretty bad!
It is an awesome class! You have to put some work into it...but Dan and his wife Kathy are great! You discuss art and love and beauty...really interesting stuff!
Don't listen to the bad raters. Dan is a great prof. His midterm and final are extra credit. The essays in class are from the night before's hw. I really enjoyed the class and came away learning a lot.

Dan is a great man..he is really nice...but the class is intense..you have to do lots of readings and there is a quiz everyday on the readings!!
Great teacher. He is so caring of his students and would do anything for them. He wants you to do well in his class and takes time to make sure that it happens.
Dan is one of the most reverent and caring teachers I've ever had. You have to go to every class, for your grade is an accumulation of daily quizzes. But the readings are never too long or difficult and there are no tests. Approach class with an open mind a he will move you. One you'll never forget!
i loved him he was cool, BUT WAY TOO MUCH READING. i read more than i did for my major.
Dan is absolutely great! He is very optimistic and caring. I went to his class as a shy and unconfident person not knowing anything about aesthetics, I came out as a STAR! Why, because Dan is a star thrower and creator. THough I didn't get an "A" (because it's not an easy class) I learned so MUCH in the class. I highly recommend Dan!
2-part 75-page syllabus. says exact interpretation and/or agreement with his take on subject not necessary - don't you believe it! be bang on or he'll take it off your grade. unsympathetic, dogmatic, admires his view of the subject (right or wrong doesn't matter.) take 120 in summer and get somebody else for instructor.
Dan was one of the best professors I've ever had. Hard class? You bet! But I ended up learning more about the concept of "learning" from him than anyone else at Loyola. Amazing teacher, and someone who truly cares about your success.
Dan is easily one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life! He teaches in unconventional ways, which makes the class exciting. He really does care about his students and is one of those professors you never forget. Take his class!!!
Very good teacher. I definately respect him and his teaching style. Quiz every class - make sure you do the readings. He always puts the class ahead of everything else and is always helpful outside of class. A little on the easy side for my liking, but a good intro to Philosophy. Good guy, I recommend highly
Quiz everyday but if you do the readings you'll be fine. Very different style for teaching. You earn your grade as you go...No exams! He doesn't believe in Exams...That's kinda cool. I'd take him again.
intense-prob.1st time i was ever truly challenged. im usualy the exceptionalstudent, here ur all equal cus u reason&crit.thnkng not memorize& artificial stuff.Dan shows kindness&leniency, doesnt wana see u suffer-ull get a 2nd chance.u tear ur hair out w/ workload/stress but u wouldnt be the same if u didnt take.Be inspired&have someone beleive in u
truly a life changing experience!
Daily Quizes::::: No tests::::: class is intense, do the hw, and read::::: dont slack, ull do bad::::: i studied, and i got an A, my gpa is like 3.2, so you can do it too::::: Super interesting. Go for it. This class will change ur perspective on life. Dont take it if you arnt ready to be challenged or want an easy A. Lots of ppl drop 2nd day.
i honestly don't know what these people are talking about. dan is pompous and doesn't explain anything, but expects you to know everything after only 15 minutes of 'lecture' per class. grading is horrible, i didn't learn a thing, and he has class pets. i'm glad to never have to take him again!
Had him for aesthetics. Pretty good teacher. Very hard if you don't do the readings. 95% = A, but there are TONS of opportunities for extra credit.
Dan is an awesome prof. He really knows how to get people interested and to participate in class. In class quiz every day...not hard if you do the reading.
Dan is an amazing Prof. I took the class my senior yr., bc I needed it to graduate, but I wish I had taken it earlier. His class teaches you how to study for all your classes, helps you improve your work ethic. He is a good man, always there if you need help. Must go to lectures, quiz daily, must do the readings...and there are a ton, but worth i
Possibly the most nurturing professors around. There is NOTHING this man won't help a student through. If you get the chance, let him share his knowledge and passion for his subject with you.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER AND ALL OF YOU WHO SAY HE IS GREAT YOU MUST LIKE DOING ABSENTMINDED WORK AND LISTENING TO A MAN WHO IS SO SELF CENTERED HE MAKES YOU READ HIS OWN BOOK....FRANKLY I DROPPED THE CLASS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEMESTER BECAUSE I JUST COULD NOT TAKE IT THE MAN IS INSANE IS IT IS THE MOST HW I HAVE EVER DONE FOR A 100 LEVEL CLASS...
Please do not be fooled by his "feel-good" approach; if you are a serious student, you will be highly disappointed. Dan prefers feelings and unsubstantialized generalizations to factual accuracy and careful scholarship. He claims the course is rigorous, but it is actually a disorganized mess. His approach to literature is sophomoric.
Ok, this class is set up weird. I dropped it... hard to handle, grades in a not-normal way. If you dont plan on going above and beyond and doing oral presentations about everything every day... DONT take this class. I couldn't get out of it fast enough, seriously.
This course is not hard but is a LOT of work. However you really learn a lot about yourself and about philosophy from the course. Dan and his wife are adorable, and both are great teachers. E-mail them any time and they will respond helpfully. I would love to take him again--wish I had time! If you are smart and serious about school, tak this cours
if you want a teacher who will change your life, take dan. he is incredibly intelligent and the way that he interacts with his students is unlike anything i have ever seen. its alot of work but it is so worth it. dan inspired me to totally change my life, and if you dare to take him, he can do the same for you!!
he changed my life and made me excited to go to class, to learn, and to challenge myself in unthinkable ways. if you don't like traditional classes with tests then this will be perfect for you.
This is the only professor that I remember from my school career at Loyola and I only graduated a couple years ago! Yes, the style of class is a little different, but well worth it. This person changed the way I think to this day.
he says he teachers for skills rather than knowledge which is true in that he cares less about what you say than most. there is a large amount of "reporting" and annoying work. This asside he is inspiring while his course may not be.
Took him for Being Human Phil class. I have honestly never enjoyed an academic experience less in my entire life. I dropped two months into the semester because I couldn't tolerate his in-class rudeness to students and his subjective grading. Also, I was putting 12-15 hours of work per week into a 100 level class and had a D. Not worth it.
The class requires an average of 10-20 hours of work a week, and with that you might only scrape a C. I believe it had an original enrollment of 60 and dropped below 30. Six units for the class, with each unit generally having a paper, test, group presentation, and daily homework. I promise you there are easier classes to take to fulfill core.
Dan is the most amazing teacher I have had to this day - He truly changed my life. It was the most work I have ever done for a class, but well worth it. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking for a teacher who will inspire you to be a better person and to learn to your full potential.
Dan will challenge you. He sticks to the syllabus and you will have to earn your grade -- don't expect him to make any exceptions for you, cause he won't. Tests are probably the most difficult part of the course, but if you email him what you've prepared well before the test he will offer excellent advice. Take if you want to REALLY learn, you will
Dan is a really nice guy, but this class is hard. It requires attendance at every class. The test are still hard even though you can prepare for them. This class has a large work load. 10 people dropped after midterms. Although it is hard, the material is interesting.
Dan is a really great guy and cares about his students almost too much. The course does require a bit of work but if you read and ask for feedback its an easy A. Dan has inspired me to lead a more fulfilling life. Dan for the WIN!
Please don't take this professor. It's not worth it, I promise.
I honestly don't believe that there are students who enjoyed this class. I dropped it, and everyone else I know who is still in it or or who also dropped it thinks the amount of work required was not worth it. The material is somewhat interesting, but the class itself is not worth the stress. It's pointless to hate school that much.
Dan is the most amazing professor I've had to this day. He has a relationship with each student and WANTS you to get an A! His wife teaches with him and they are ADORABLE. The class is a LOT of work but the A you'll get after committing to it is SO WORTH IT! He is amazing.
Such a challenging 4 months! Dan certainly gave me a run for my money. A lot of work. While I am thrilled to be finished with the class, I will have an empty space in my heart for sure. Dan was both a personal trainer for my mind and spirit and I am grateful to have taken his class.
changed my life.
Do Not Take this professor. He is not helpful and even for a entry level philosophy course his work requirement and expectations are unrealistic. When I had trouble in the course I went to him and he was not very helpful. In the end I even felt discouraged to continue w/ this pointless course at all. The Ridiculous work load isn't worth the stress!
This class changed my life!!!! You learn so much from Dan and I wanted to do well because he is such an incredible teacher. Its a lot of work but its worth it! He is unlike any other loyola teacher and follows his own rules and has his own style
Brilliant teacher, but very hard workload. Not very understanding when it comes to sh#t hitting the fan. If you put in 200% effort, then this is the class for you. If not- find another teacher.
Dan is a really good teacher. He honestly wants you to do well in the course. He is very flexible. As long as you attempt, he will make sure you have the opportunity to succeed. He is always true to his word!
YIKES. i dont know where to begin. Theres quizzes every class (open notes), so unless you wanna fail, you can't ditch. The workload isn't light. The information is hard. He expects a lot, though he does explain things very well. Do the hw, or you'll look like a fool is he calls on you (which he does every so often). Try hard, and you may survive.
Dan is a great teacher. There is a quiz every class (2 pts) & you can't ditch class or you'll miss alot. He's kind and really wants everyone to pass. He outlines the structures of essays u have to write for the tests during class, so write down everything u see and hear! The workload is heavy, don't procrastinate. Take his class for an A in PHIL.
This class is not for lazy students who do not want to put in work outside of class, however, Dan's class is an eye opener.
Dan is a great teacher! Take this class for PHIL core. I received an A, and I had absolutely no interest or knowledge of philosophy. He's very kind, wants all his students to succeed, not just in his class but life. I'm gonna miss his class, even though it was challenging. Try very hard and get help if needed and you'll be fine. Dan's the best! :)
Dan changed my life. Although his class was difficult, it was AMAZING. I left with a new and large interest in philosophy that wasn't present before. He really wants all his students to succeed and rewards hard work. If you're lazy and don't take education that seriously, this class isn't for you, but I definitely learned a lot.
Amazing person, amazing teacher. Work load was, at times, very rough, but overall an amazing class. If you try and aren't lazy it's very possible to get an A. Dr. Vaillancourt loves his students and wants everyone to succeed. He is also funny and makes class interesting, and very flexible.
Dan is awesome! his class is deff challenging but if you put the work into it, it is DEFFF possible to get an A.
He's amazing. There are a lot of essays and 3 pt quizzes that add up quickly, but he gives you most of the questions so if you put the work in it's easy and so possible to get an A. He is the kindest man and really cares about his students. By far one of the best classes I have taken and I hate philosophy! Take Dan
I started off the semester hating Dan, but came to respect him as the class progressed. He is one of the most genuine human beings you'll ever meet, and he loves his students. The class is difficult-quizzes before discussing the material, heavy reading, etc., but if you put in the effort it's no big deal. He's great!
Dan is an LIFE CHANGING PROFESSOR. I went into this like any other core classnot excited. But, I genuinely wanted to go to class everyday. His lectures are clear, interesting, & applicable to real life. There is a 2 pt quiz every class but his build your grade system is very fair and he will adjust it so that the class accessible to all. TAKE HIM!
Doesn't realize your have others classes, grades papers harshly, doesn't regard your emails
Dan has been my favorite professor so far. He is a great lecturer and is so inspirational. The class is a lot of work, to do well you have to prepare answers to the study questions for each class, but it is so worth it. I would take him again in a heart beat. Great teacher. Great philosopher. Great man.
Readings can be very difficult, but you must do them and answer the questions that go with them for quizzes. I find him sweet and very caring about his students. It is in no way an easy class but I think learning from Dan makes it worth it.
Dan is the sweetest and most inspirational man I've ever met. Class requires work but i would take it again in a heartbeat because of him
Dan is one of the best professors I have ever had and he is also the sweetest and most encouraging teachers. Philosophy is extremely difficult but Dan makes it worth it while inspiring you and making you laugh. Readings are imperative to passing!
Dan is AMAZING. He expects a lot from his students and may try to scare you in the beginning but for those who are willing to spend an hour on every HW, you will get SO much out of this class. I hold Dan in such high respect, so glad I took his class. Not a phil major but I found the class very interesting and I learned a lot! Study group is a must
If you're looking for an Easy A with minimal work- don't take this class. If you want to learn about philosophy and have a wonderful experience with a great professor, take it. I hated philosophy and Dan in the beginning, as I'm pre-med. I went from a D on my first essay to a 100% on my second because I learned to love and respect him and the class
Dan is an amazing professor and is very devoted to helping us excel at becoming leaders in the workforce. This was the best class I have ever taken and I will definitely recommend this class to anyone who is interested in philosophy. It will be a very sad day when is phenomenal professor retires.
One of the hardest classes I've taken. The reading can be very hard, and you're expected to spend a total of 4+ hours on homework a week.
Dan was one of the nicest professors ever. It is imperative to speak with him with whatever problem you have, he will genuinely understand. But, Dan expects a lot from his students and it is their responsibility to come prepared to class every day for points. His class disciplined me to become more strict on my assignment. Do not take for easy A.
I thought that Dan and his wife Kathy were excellent professors. They have encouraged me to read and further develop myself on human nature
Professor Vaillaincourt is a demanding but rewarding teacher. The readings and assignments are challenging, but engaging with the material and attending class pays off. unstuck AI was a great study aid that complemented the textbook. Overall, a tough but worthwhile course.
