very anal grader
Made a rather boring subject seem half-way interesting
Has a funny lisp, but he even tells you the class is the easiest math at BU

gets pissy sometimes but reallllly easy
This guy is a wack job!!!!!! He's so crazy, but he's so FUN!!! I can't stand math, and this guy made going to class actually entertaining. He's a little off his rocker...but he's definitely an awesome lecturer. He's very clear with the material. Easy!
Heh. weiner.
His MET class is a joke.
He knows what he is talking very good in teaching explains very well. exams are very fair. I recommend him to everyone specially if you are taking probability over the summer.
great class
Dan is a good teacher. A throw back to when grades could be given out. His class is easy and he is available to help.
He explains all concepts very well and clearly. If you attend all his lectures and pay attention and understand everything, then you will never need to use the book.
He's great. One of the best professors I've had at BU
it is waaaay too easy to be a BU class....tests are straight out of the notes, great GPA booster. you won't learn much though cuz it's stuff you already know.
One of the best profs I've had. Tests come right out of notes which are foolproof and simple. Teaches complex stuff in such a simple way. I always hated math because I couldn't understand anything, and even I got an A in this class. Great GPA booster.
this class is hell to sit through, you will most definitley fall asleep. unfortunatly since he doesn't go by the book at all you need to go to lecture. awful class but worth it for the grade boost. weiner is creepy.
One of the very best professors I have had at BU. Extremely knowledgeable, clear, wants everyone to understand everything, encourages questions every lecture. If you go to class and pay careful attention, the tests are very fair and easy! Great Class!
He's my favorite professor at BU. Extremely clear, intelligent, funny in a nerdy kind of way, very understanding and extremely helpful WHEN he's available, which is limited. Beware: On exams, stop IMMEDIATELY when told to do so, or you'll regret it. He's all about fairness. I highly recommend!
Makes very advanced concepts seem easy and he is the most fair human being on Earth. Tests are very fair, grading is generous despite difficulty of the material. Highly recommend... do your work and you get an A!
Dan is one of the best all around professors I've ever had. I can't find a single fault. Well prepared, clear presentation style (makes excellent use of blackboard space with ease of notetaking in mind), makes most challenging material accessible. Love his sense of humor. Math Department's best!
Best math teacher I've ever had. Goes over every detail so that you can't help but "get it". Reviews excessively and offers special office hours before all exams. Grades fairly. Goes above and beyond to help you learn, and tries to make it fun with his hokey sense of humor at the same time.
cool guy, a little whacky in his delivery but he is funny and the classes dont bore you. 511 was very confusing and fast paced, but 81-83 are great courses if you are interested in probability/stat and he is a great teacher to have. good on the board and tests are fair although not a cake-walk.
although a bit nasty in office hours i LOVED weiner. he is very straightforward and makes u understand everything. exams are always easier than the homework. i got a B+ with MINIMAL effort. Going to class was relaxing and enjoyable. Glad to see BU has one decent professor.
The man knows how to teach! He's a miracle worker. I have always had trouble with Math, but he really goes through everything very thoroughly and takes the time to get everyone ready for the tests, and I did well. To boot, he seems to love math and teaching.
very good teacher, really straight forward and good at explaining the topics. at times assigns a lot of homework, but never collects it. Doesn't really follow the book, but if you go to class, you'll be fine. Office hours are kind of disorganized, but overall a great teacher.
Lectures are great. Very good at explaining things. Does not collect or comment on hw, so you dont know what to do. Office hours are nasty--he does 5 probability problems and then 1 analysis problem. Impossible to get help outside the office-hrs. Im not sure if this can be a good foundation to advanced level materials. Exams are hard.
He's a great professor. His tests are fair and he is clear on the board. If you have to take a probability class, take it with Dan.
go to class, pay attention, and you will pass with flying colors. assigns homework that he doesnt check or go over at all. very clear lectures and willing to explain things. only grades are 3 midterms and a final, all of which were relatively easy.
good professor, except his grading is ridiculous, he takes large amounts of pts off your grade for no reason. I've gotten every question right on the first 2 tests but for some reason I only have a B.....?
Professor is kinda an ass, especially at grading. Each test's 25% of grade, no exceptions, if u get a20 on the 1st one but then all perfect 100s, he's still giving you an80. Helpful in office hours, tho. 25% of each test is definitions from class, so go! Do hw for test practice, but ask bout really hard ones, often he says we don't need to know em
Best prof i've had at BU.. i really believe he could teach stats to an autistic monkey....ignore the people complaining about his grading style b/c if you actually go to class you'll know that every exam problem is exactly like is examples in class just with different #'s and he does them exactly how he wants them on the test.don't buy the textbook
got an A with very minimal outside class work...just don't miss class and you shouldn't have to study for more than half an hour for his exams
Great lecturer, but a jerk outside of that. Not accessible, won't even read emails, obviously has somewhere else he'd rather be. Light workload for a grad course. No commenting on hw, so you have no idea what he wants on tests (the entire grade). Picky grader. B is very attainable; A seems pretty tough. Seemed a like large number of ppl did poorly.
Be sure to come to every lecture-although he doesn't take attendance, he will go over examples that will eventually show up on an exam. DO EXAM PROBLEMS EXACTLY AS HE DID THEM IN LECTURE! Don't skip anything that he included, or he'll take off major points. He's a pretty clear lecturer and makes corny, but entertaining, jokes in class.
Gives great lectures, really knows his material well.
Probability turned out to be a ridiculusly hard class. Even though I've got two A's in statistcs classes I ended up with a C- in probability. Yea, he gives good lectures and you learn a lot, but the exams were horrible. He might be good at other classes, like MA 123, but DO NOT take MA 581 with him!
Dan is a great professor. He loves what he does and tries to teach the class to get students involved. Overall nice guy, go to class and you will do well.
On exams, takes points off for ridiculously stupid reasons, and does so continuously.
great red hair / mannerisms - solid instructor - i got a C for the course but thats cause i got an A on the 1st test and an F on the next one - do your hwk before class - don't miss class cause it's impossible to catch up - weiner is classic - take ma113 in the summer
Class is unfair for both grads and undergrads. Lectures are taught based on grad student's standard. Most of the students in the class either took probability before or some related class or test such as the actuary exams. Unfriendly in OH, rude in general. No matter how hard you try for the class, the result is still the same. You would think gett
Class is ridiculously easy. The problems are pretty straight forward. Lecture is not necessary but by going you see what he wants you to include in your answers for the test. Very doable.
Dan is a GREAT professor. If you're taking MA 113 as a req, TAKE HIS CLASS!! Lectures are kinda boring (it's Stats...) but he makes it fun. There are NO surprises on the tests, he tells exactly what he's looking for and how you could lose points. If you go to lecture and take notes, and study at least 20 min for the exam, you can easily get an A.
Weiner is very energetic and very clear. His test questions come straight from the ones he gives to you in class. Explains concepts throughly and moves at a steady pace, clearing up everything, also very funny "thats nothing to sneeze about" to quote him!
Dan is definitely the strangest person I've ever met. He has lots of weird mannerisms and a strange affinity for cats. His class is challenging (at least for me; I'm really awful at math) and even though I really didn't do well, I surprisingly still kind of like him. Math really isn't my thing, but as a professor, this guy is pretty good.
He is GREAT. Subject is super boring but it makes it fun and is a really understanding nice guy. Never opened the textbook once, just listen carefully to his lectures and you can easily do well.
I switched my major to Statistics because of prof. Weiner. He's a great teacher who explains everything perfectly and makes statistics seem like the most interesting thing in the world. I'd gladly take another class with him.
An easy class once you realize what he wants. You HAVE to go to class to get the definitions for tests tho, hes really picky about them.Test problems are exactly like what he does in class/puts on the practice exam, so know how to do them & youll be fine. Assigns difficult t.b. problems sometimes but doesnt test on it so its not as hard as it seems
Great teacher!! really helpful and tries to give lots of examples and is always open to questions. Take this prof!!
He is so genius, passionate, smart, and kind. I think he is one of the popular and best prof in BU.
Great introduction to analysis. Does not follow textbook, though. To succeed in this course you must attend all the lectures, take careful notes (and review them!) and do all your homework. I'm looking forward to MA512, a sequel. My only complain: his office hours are somewhat limited.
SOOO helpful and nice! Explains everything until you are crystal clear. The class itself calls for some repitition but he makes it bearable.
The best teacher I've had yet at BU. Excellent at motivating and explaining concepts. Homework is helpful and wasn't collected, tests are very fair and were usually based on distributed practice tests. Lectures were interesting and even funny. Dan is great in Office Hours and extremely knowledgeable about math. Take a course with him if you can!
Weiner keeps lecture interesting even though this is a pretty boring subject. you have to go to lecture because he teaches very different than the book teaches. exams are kinda detailed but definately managable. go to lecture and do your homework and you'll do great.
Loved Dan. Was a great teacher and tried to make class interesting even though it really was not. The tests are straightforward and you can only do bad if you dont go to lecture. So far the beset teacher i have experienced at BU. Actually cared about the students unlike many of the other teachers here.
I also took his MA511 in the fall. He is one the best professors I had in my time at BU, and among the finest teachers in the math dept. His lectures make a the (potentially) dry topic of analysis engaging and fascinating. For the full benefit of these classes you really need to take both semesters, as some topics (such as topology) are in the 2nd.
Weiner is teaches well. Easily understood what he is talking about. but he does not help you after class. he directs everything comment or question to the TA if you ask anything after class. but highly recommand this class. Easy A!
Easiest class ever. Some people find it difficult that he is ridiculously picky about exam solutions, but he tells you exactly what he wants, step by step...just do the problems exactly the way he says to! I rarely went to lecture, always went to discussion. TF sarah is wonderful.
I am almost mathematically retarded, Prof. Weiner made this material as clear as possible. I did ok, not b/c of any lack on his part, I just really stink at math. He's really great at explaining in class and gives awesome examples. Take him.
This is a sequel to Principles of Analysis (MA511, MA512), which is prereq. Professor Weiner does not teach MA711 that often, but when he does, I highly recommend to take this course. The key is to attend all the lectures and take careful notes. The textbook is a bit too terse. Fairly high workload, but you learn a lot.
Excellent professor, makes the material super easy to understand and tries to make it interesting. His exams are right from his notes, just go to class and you won't need the book. If you need to fulfill a math requirement take this class!
Prof Weiner is an excellent teacher. He explains the concepts in the most easiest and simplest way. His exams are all straight foward from the lecture notes. I never went to discussion and I still havent even opened the txtbook. All you really need are the notes to study for the exams. :)
Given, I think all math is easy. But taking stats with Dan was a piece of cake. He really makes you learn your stuff so you do have to study a little but it was by far my easiest class this semester.
Professor Weiner is seriously one of the best professors that I've had at BU so far and definitely one of my best math teachers ever. I'm not a math person and only took stats for CAS reqs, but Dan made me really enjoy and like this class. He makes everything really clear and goes over concepts until you get them. Awesome professor!!!
By far, the best teacher in the Math department, and probably one of the best at BU. I hate math, I have always been bad at math and took this class for CAS maths requirement. But this guy made me love this class. He never drifts, is hilarious, explains in such a profound, detailed and understandable way that even I knew what he was talking about.
Weiner is the man. Always explains everything to the fullest detail, and even though the curriculum is not very difficult, it's always helpful. Also keeps you on your toes with his absurd recurring humor in every class. He is "nothing to sneeze at", and I would certainly recommend him for anyone taking this class.
I'm only a junior, but I can already say Dan is the best prof at BU. Easy class, simple tests and his quirky personality makes me want to come to class. I don't know anyone who hates him/his class.
Took this course as a requirement (you probably are too): I went to class daily, took kick-a$$ notes from the front row, did the homework, and got my A. Now my friend, on the other hand: never went to class except for test days, copied my notes, used the textbook pages to roll up his joints, and still managed to get an A. I feel like an idiot. :(
Don't buy the book. Just go to most of the lectures and take a little bit of notes. Don't miss the review day before the exams. You don't have to go to discussion and you really shouldn't. If you're looking for an easy Math, this is the best you'll get.
HE COUGHS LIKE A DOG
Quotes from Dan Weiner: "If I ever go underground, I want my codename to be oval." - April 2011<p>"I don't want any emails for the next month. You can email me when the semester starts." - end of semester, Dec 2010 <p> "Some of you are thinking, I just worked that proof out in my head. You other's shouldn't feel bad if you didn't though."
Easiest math class. You don't need the textbook and tests are made up of examples he gives in lecture. If you go to lecture and take notes it's an easy A.
Amazing professor. I'm horrible at math, and so far I have an A. He explains everything over and over again, and keeps you entertained (which is hard to do for stats). Don't buy the book, no one has used it. If you go to lecture, you'll leave knowing everything you need to. I didn't even look at my notes and got a 97 for the first test.
I suck at math and I got an A in this class. Good thing about him is that he doesn't do the 2+2=4 in lecture and puts 626535xsfacwdz=? on exams. Go to lecture, Pay attention, and expect the exam problems to look exactly like what's in your notes. Imperative to go to lectures but I didn't even go to discussion after the first day.
I took Weiner's class for both 581–582. He is the best professor that I have EVER had. He is really passionate about statistics, and really wants you to get it. See him in office hours and ask lots of questions.
Worst professor I've ever had. His proofs are bizarre and dont help you prove anything in the future. His notes are not rigorous but rather confusing. He addresses the class like its kindergarten
Well if you're planning to take 581 you'll probably end up with this guy and let me tell you that his exams are HARD in the stupidest of ways: not because of the material per se, but because he really wants you to be able to vomit perfect answers for modestly difficult questions in a ridiculously small amount of time.
He explains concepts well. I do not like maths, but usually have done well. I felt prepared for his exams but was consistently marked very low. His TAs grade exams very harshly. Class grades tend to be poor. TAs are rubbish. But concepts will be explained well.
Simple class, but a lot of specific things you need to do for simple problems. A lot of memorization. The math itself isn't hard and he takes up to two lectures explaining them in depth, proving them, etc, so they make sense to students. However, on the test it is pretty much taught one way and you are expected to respond that way. Weiner is good.
EASY A. I never went to discussion, didn't buy a textbook, did ZERO HW/out of class work, and skipped half the lectures. Still got an A- Tests are exactly what's in review lectures. HOWEVER he is the most rude prof. I've ever had. He's not accessible to students EVER and is not helpful outside of class. He's also very nit-picky and over dramatic.
Best math professor I have had
Class itself was very easy, attendance was not mandatory and homework was optional. Tests were pretty straightforward too although he did take off points for very tiny errors. Very rude in person though, not someone I would want to get individual help from.
He is a very nice and helpful teacher who is pretty good at math and clarifying math. I appreciate his points and clear logic in teaching. Yet this class has four exams which may be a bit dragging and tiring to go thru. But as long as you follow his materials, you will be good.
What a guy! Hilarious to the hilt. Extreme attention to detail. I would highly recommend you do his suggested reading prior to class as he loves class participation. Also makes you stand out. Overall best Mathematics lecturer I ever had!
He not only knows a lot but also knows how to deliver the content. Moreover, he is so nice that he encouraged me to study hard. Attending BU, this class is one of very very few classes that worths expensive BU tuition. However, can't guarantee a good grade
Awesome prof who wants his students to do well. Go to lecture, take notes, and do things exactly the way he wants you to on exams. He isn't picky- he tells you the correct way to do things and how to succeed MANY times so just listen to him and you will have no problem. Delivers the material very well, engaging, and knowledgeable. Take this class!
I was nervous for this class because math isn't my best skill but Weiner made it really easy. He is open to any questions you have and his lecture is exactly what is on the exams. Discussions can be helpful but not necessary to go to. Only opened the book a few times.
Easy class. Exam questions are exactly like the questions done in class and discussion. Remember to do everything he tells you to do on exams or else you will get points off. Don't buy the textbook because you don't need it!
Weiner is a great professor. He explains concepts very well in a clear and simple manner. He's very big on respect and paying attention in his class so make sure to stay focused during lecture. If you pay attention in lecture you will do well on exams. Don't bother buying the text!
Honestly, this has to have been one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken at BU. Dan was very clear with what he expected, and as long as you pay attention and go to class you will get a good grade. Tests have no surprise questions and are exactly how he explains them in class, sometimes even word for word but with different numbers.
Great lecturer, amazing professor - Explains concepts you need to know, tells you exactly what will be on the test. As long as you do exactly what he says, you'll get an A. Averages for the class' test were always above 90's.
Best professor I have ever had in my life. I am horrible at math yet have a 97 avg in his class because his lectures are super clear and easy to understand. He gives examples to clarify even more and his exams are exactly like his examples. He is a stickler for certain things and will take points off for small things but he is the BEST!
TAKE THIS CLASS! Most people who take MA 113 , do so because it's mandatory to fulfill a requirement. If you must take a MA take this class! I am absolutely the worst at math and Dan makes it so easy. Don't waste money on the book. Make sure you go to lecture. DON'T TEXT! Also I had the worsts best TF (George Story) TFs can really help!
Dan is very clear with what he expects. The tests are not bad if you take good notes in class and study hard for them. Three midterms and one final exam where most questions are variations of examples done during lectures. Personally I don't find the class easy at all. But good grades are definitely attainable.
Great professor, stimulates interest in statistics, very concise, etc. However, the man of the hour here is the TF, George Story, who is without a doubt the best TF I had so far; without him not many students would have done well. Props to him and Prof. Weiner for a great statistics introductory course!
Professor Weiner is my idol. Taught very well in lecture and discussions gave work that mimicked the exam. You'll learn a lot and barely have to study. I love his jokes in class. He demands respect (don't leave early, etc) but you'll often get out early. You do NOT need textbook, trust me.
Has stupid guideline rules about grading, where even if you show your work and get the correct answer if you don't do it "his" way he'll mark you off. Also is extremely unhelpful outside of class, definitely one of the worst math professors I've ever had
Weiner explains things very clearly and is always checking in to see if people are keeping up. He's also really funny, so class is a breeze. The material isn't hard but he's very strict when grading exams. Pay attention to his rules and follow them closely and this will be an easy A. Also, do not come in late to class, you'll regret it.
Highly recommend the class. I only give an average review because Professor Weiner talks so fast and packs so much information into lecture that sometimes its really hard to keep up in lecture and also OH. But doesn't do a lot of hand waving! (good) Ask him for lots of examples, turn everything upside down and you will learn a lot in this course.
MA 582 is not very interesting, but Dan is a great professor. Lecture notes and the practice problems assigned in class are absolutely essential for doing well in this class. Dan's also very helpful during his office hours, although there can often be so many students there.
Weiner is hilarious and obviously knows that most people don't care about Elementary Stats, but makes the class enjoyable anyway. The only grades in the class are the 4 exams, so do well. He hates cell phones and laptops in class and will call you out any chance he gets. Overall a fun class to attend if you pay attention.
You must definitely work hard to do well on Dan's exams. Attending lecture is a must, as most of your test questions originate from them. Since Dan speaks fast, I voice recorded my lectures and referred back if necessary. He is very helpful during office hours and take advantage of his time!! (it helped jump my grade by 2/3 of a letter)
Best Professor in BU
I can't emphasize enough that I am REALLY bad at math. My usual high school math grades were B-. However, Prof. Weiner made it easy for me to understand stat and I got better grade than what I expected. You don't need textbook, and if you seek out, there are some previous semester's exams. The discussions are useless, so just go to lectures.
Weiner is the professor I love most at BU. Clear lectures with interesting and sufficient examples. A little homework and all useful. Four easy exams a semester and they are the only things counted into the final grade. Would take his class again!!!
Long story short, Dan was such a good professor that I changed my major to statistics
II've never been a math person and was really dreading taking statistics for my COM requirements. Now that the class is over, I'm looking into taking more stats. Dan's lectures are clear, concise, and funny, and you always know what to expect from him. Just don't buy the book. He never checks homework and it's unnecessary for studying.
Took this class as a requirement. Showing up is absolutely mandatory, but that is ALL you have to do to get an A. His exams are exactly like what he does in class (insert different numbers) and he tells you EXACTLY what he takes off points for. I thought his off color jokes were hilarious. He will never EVER make you feel stupid, ask anything.
he is the worst and merely explain easy topics rather than challenging ones in the class of mathematical statistics.
COM majors, take this man's class (MA113). Dan is so straightforward in his lectures. All exam problems are just the classroom examples slightly tweaked. Discussion is unnecessary. Only online homework is collected (no textbook needed). Just go to class, take good notes, and review them. You'll be in good hands.
Don't skip lecture. You will fail this class, you need the formulas. That being said, for a math class the lectures are not boring. Professor Weiner keeps things interesting and engaging and he makes a lot of corny jokes. If you pay attention, you can pass this class. Discussion doesn't take attendance and you definitely don't need the textbook.
Extremely boring lectures. Crazy about students having their phones in class, he yelled at multiple students throughout the semester for even checking their phones and overall made the lecture hall a tense environment. Makes lots of creepy sexual jokes for a 50 year old man to 18-21 year old students. Would not recommend this professor at all.
WOw. Never again. Had to drop his class because I flunked the first test and he told me there was no hope for me. Lectures are fast pace and all over the place. Material is understood in class but then when it comes to homework it feels like a whole new course. Total smart ass and doesnt care if his students do well or not.
Dan is the best professor I had at BU. His MA581 class has no homework and the grade is calculated only based on the three midterms and one final which is not cumulative. His lectures are fun Some people wants homework to be mandatory so that they can practice, but I like that this class has no homework because you can adjust you own study pace.
he is truly a gem and a lovely human being.
He acts like he does all this work and needs a huge break, but he doesn't even grade the tests. Your grade is entirely determined by if you have a good and reasonable TA, which if you do, congrats.
Dan is a well-meaning professor, who makes a lot of "dad" jokes. He is very thorough about what he teaches and understands most kids in this course are here because of a course requirement. He is very clear about the fact that he is a tough grader, but it also clear that he does want the best for his students. Truly enjoyed him as a professor.
HANDS DOWN HARDEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. I've never had to work so hard in my life, but honestly that's because I had never taken stats before. The professor made me work for it, but I was able to succeed in the end. Weiner will be with you the whole way, he's funny but he's truly something else.
Nice guy who wants to help you grasp the material, but his brain is just so wired to the stuff that it seems impossible for him to explain anything slowly. The grade consists solely of four exams, and you need to know the material at the top of your head in order to do well on them. If you're prone to careless errors, prepare for disappointment.
Weiner can make some awkward jokes in lectures, but the class is really easy (spent the first month learning how to find the mean). He's a very strict grader on tests, so you have to do everything the way he does in lecture, but it's pretty easy to memorize that since each test only covers a couple of topics.
This is the hardest class I've taken at college yet- if you've taken stats before, you'll be fine. If not, this is not the dude to learn it from. He teaches concepts in a convoluted way & there is no continuity in the course (tests/lectures, textbook, & online homework). Take someone easier! That said, he is kind and went out of his way to help me.
Dan is good at explaining basic statistics both mathematically and conceptually, though he makes a lot of awkward jokes in class. You do have to show up to lecture and take good notes, but that's pretty much it. On tests, just answer the questions very thoroughly (exactly as he does in his in-class example problems) for full credit.
Dan's lectures are very straightforward and to the point, but he still manages to clearly explain all concepts and to provide good examples. He really wants everyone to do well. Pay attention in lecture and make sure you understand all the lecture examples, and you should be fine on exams- there are never any surprises.
He is fine, his jokes aren't inappropriate. Mostly teasing Trump. And if you like trump it's kind of your own problem anyways. He's office hour is always packed though. He will explain every little thing you need to understand the course, he calls it martian maths. For people who already know their stuff this can be a bit redundant.
Take stats with Dan if you want to learn a lot and learn well
Enjoyed taking 582 with him much better than 581--the material is less dense, so he explains everything more thoroughly and clearly. Might take a few rereads of your notes to grasp them, but he basically gives you everything you need to understand the concepts, and is helpful in office hours.
One of the best experiences of my academic career. Professor Weiner has a talent for making difficult material accessible. Brilliant lecturer, who knows the material.
Weiner is very entertaining and manages to make statistics engaging. There's a lot more information than you'd expect or desire from an introductory course, or for that matter a gen-ed. He assigns online homework that is not made by him and is, suffice to say, pretty unfair (contains unlettered material, poor question wording, very poor solutions)
Best professor at BU. Super funny, helpful, lectures are always clear and grading is straightforward. Had him for MA113, MA581 and MA582, succeeded with flying colors in all the classes just because the class is really set up well. Its a must that you go to lecture to succeed because his exams are only based on the materials he covers in lecture
His lectures are great, he explains concepts very well and is really good at preparing you for the exams (which are pretty easy). The online homework is a bit harder because he doesn't write it himself but it's still easy. His jokes can be annoying and repetitive though, I never want to hear him say "nothing to sneeze at" again.
One of the best professors at BU. Extremely fair and and explains all concepts in full detail. He makes sure you know what you need to succeed in the class
I want to say how incredibly fair i think Dan is. I completely failed my first 3 exams but he kept giving me hope and saying he knows how much of a good student i am. I went to office hours 2 times a week which were super helpful. i got an A on the final so he passed me with a C. Doesnt give up on his students if he sees youre actually trying
Professor Weiner makes the concepts easy to understand because he teaches the material slowly and gives lots of examples that are very similar to the exam questions. He's funny and makes lectures interesting. His exams are fair and you can do well in the class if you go over the material learned in lecture (I didn't use the textbook once).
I was terrified to take stats because I failed math in high school, but Weiner made it the easiest class I've taken at BU. If you go to every lecture and pay attention/take the same notes that he writes on the board, then you will get A's on the exams. His examples that he puts on the board in lecture are the exact same format as his exams!
I struggled a lot in the class, especially in the beginning because it's so fast paced, but Dan is always available and happy to help his students. He really wants everyone to do well, but you have to go to lecture and pay attention without a phone. Great lectures and he's really funny, but he gets serious when people are doing something wrong
Dan takes some getting used to, but he's a great professor. He cares a lot and tries to present things in an easily digestible way. Be sure to attend his lectures and the discussion sections - if you do, the exams will be no sweat.
talks way too quickly and assumed everybody knows math as well as him and the math-savvies in class. You won't understand a thing from him if you can't keep up, which is not easy to do since he seldom stops when talking in lecture. He refuses to slow down when asked to, and his final is cumulative so beware.
Just show up and take notes!!! Awesome, hilarious guy. Now I love stats!
Dan was so great! Very funny and charismatic, made the lectures go by quicker. Really good at explaining concepts as well. Grade is made up of 4 tests, each worth 25%. No homework, just make sure you show up to lectures and pay close attention because thats what will be on tests, in my opinion you dont even need to read the textbook.
SUCH A GEM! dan is such a genuinely kind professor and is so good about explaining different concepts in a clear and concise way. to get an A, all you need to do is take extensive notes during lecture and study them- he puts all the class notes up on the board!
Prof. Weiner is honestly a gem. Great teacher and great person. Made everything really easy to understand. He is very straightforward with what he expects us to know for exams. I would definitely recommend him for MA113 and honestly any other math class. I have no regrets taking his class.
CUTEST AND SWEETEST PROFESSOR. PLEASE TAKE HIS CLASS! HE'S SUCH A GEM!!!!!! <33333 Grading is straightforward, and he tries his best to make sure the entire class is understanding the material.
Professor Weiner is easily one of the best math professors at BU. Make no mistake, this is a very challenging course and you will have to put in the work to get a good grade. But he is so great at stimulating interest in the subject that I found myself enjoying the work (even though I hated MA 581). Take his class!
I took stat in HS but by no means was I "great" at it. This class was great as a sort-of intro to statistics. Weiner is super nice and teaches very well. He always answers questions and repeats himself throughout problems to keep everyone on track. Really enjoyed this class! If you're looking for a Quant. Reas. II class, this is a great one!
he makes the most boring subject the funniest lectures worth attending 3x a week. hes so funny and makes lecture so engaging that I cant fall asleep in the class. hes so understanding and never makes you feel dumb for asking stupid or repetitive questions. hilarious man.
I really like his lectures, helpful in office hour, but it is hard to understand his grading scale. The first midterm median was 68, but he didn't curve it which lead to more than half of the class to drop after the first midterm. For the second midterm, two thirds of the class scored below 80 and he still doesn't curve.
Absolute gem of a professor. Hilarious, fun, and makes stats accessible. 4 exams of equal weight (3 in class, 1 final). I loved him and genuinely will miss this guy.
Dan is truly a gem. Not only is he hilarious, but he makes Stat bearable. It doesn't take too much effort to do well in his class, and that's coming from someone who isn't fond of math. Your grade is based on 4 exams that count for 25% of your grade. Study your notes and you'll get an A no problem. 100% would recommend this class!
Dr. Weiner is an amazing, hilarious, and inclusive professor. Whether or not you need to take statistics, I would advise you to take his class because its entertaining, useful, and far from stressful. Your grade is determined by 4 exams, each with 25%, and the final being cumulative which you will be prepared for if you attend lecture. Thumbs up!!
I cannot even begin to explain how much I love this man. He is utterly adorable. Super easy class, just re-do problems from your notes to study for the exams and you're golden. 100% take this class if you need the credit, it is an easy A. I hate math but even I enjoyed this class.
Professor Weiner is a great professor. He teaches complex concepts very well and is kinda funny too! The bad thing is that your course grade is only 4 exams (no homework or projects) and they're very long and difficult. There were around 80 people in the beginning and there were only about 30 left. I would advise going to office hours.
Dan is one of the best math professors I've had. He is very kind and funny, and I highly recommend having him for MA581. A downside of taking this class with him is that our grades are solely based on 4 exams. Doesn't collect our homework for feedback. The answers to his HW aren't too accessible, so I recommend going to his or TA's OH to get them.
As someone who hates math, I loved prof Weiner's class. He is very engaging even when the is material is uninteresting. As long as you take notes (copy down everything on the board) you should do well on the exams. He only grades on 4 exams and is picky about small details but overall he is an excellent prof!
I think this was one of the best math courses Ive ever taken! Amazing teacher and made everything so clear. Loved this class. Lectures were interesting and engaging.
Prof. Weiner is VERY strict about his exams, and the whole course grade is based off 4 exams. If you don't like your grade, well, too bad. He pretends to be nice but is very rude.
If you wanna get an A in the 100 Level course or it is your HUB course, don't pick Professor Weiner. He asks the grader to be picky, so it is hard to get an A. The whole grade is based on 4 exams.
Professor Weiner is one of the best professors I've had. MA 582 is a really difficult course but he explains concepts very clearly. (Exams are mad difficult though). He is also is very understanding to struggling students who are putting in effort. Be sure to go to office hours!
Professor Weiner's lecture is funny and he made stats easy to learn. Take his 113 and put in your effort you'll get a good grade.
Professor Weiner is the best math professor I have ever had at BU!!! Highly recommended! He made every concept easy for us to absorb and was always caring. He wanted the students to learn, and his classes are hilarious. Take him for MA 582!!
Professor Weiner is the best math professor I've been met in BU. He explains the mathematical concepts super clearly on class. Although MA582 is a tough course, he is really welcome students to go to his office hours. You can learn a lot in his office hour. Also, Professor Weiner is not a tough grader as well. He gave us extra credit in final exam.
Professor Weiner seemed mean and a harsh grader at first and sometimes he would be mad at students who were not paying attention but he cares about students very much and he wants all students to succeed. He explains things very clearly in lectures and in OH. Choose him if you can! Super sweat professor!
Professor Weiner is an amazing math teacher, especially coming from someone who doesn't like math and just took this course for a hub credit. He explains concepts clearly and tries to make classes fun and light-hearted. Enjoyed this class much more than I thought.
Dan is great! He knows that nobody in MA113 really wants to do math, so he makes it easy and fun. The textbook is $10/month online but tbh I never really used it. The whole grade is based on 4 exams (no hw!!), so make sure to answer the question w the exact steps that he shows you; he's particular about grading & showing work.
I absolutely hate math but love Dan and his MA113!
I feel like people who complained that he is picky grader never went to his lectures. It's true that he expects you to document your solutions in his own way, but he gave and went over examples so many times in class. He also understands that people are not always going to be excited to take stats, so he tried to make it fun and relatable!
Dan Weiner is possibly the most charismatic & funny math professor I've ever had. His lectures ride the line of being well-articulated and dense, but energetic and easy-to-listen to. But as much as I loved his lectures, he's very specific in how he explains concepts & if you don't understand (or go to office hours), you'll fall behind. Also no HW.
The best math professor there is!
Ok sure he is a nice guy but so difficult tl understand with his voice. and the chalkboard is impossible to see
Dan is literally amazing and I would 10/10 recommend elementary stats (and I'm not a math fan)! You definitely have to go to lecture and take notes. Discussion is super helpful and explains step-by-step what is going to be on the exam (there are 4). Dan does have a very specific format for the exam but he explains what to do and how to do it.
Professor Weiner is a very easy professor. It can be hard to understand his writing on the chalkboard, but he is always willing to repeat things and the TF posts the notes after class. If you're not a math person but need this class for hub, you should take it! Pretty straightforward as long as you go to lecture.
MA 582 is difficult. Likely the toughest class I've taken to this day. Weiner definitely makes a large effort, but he goes very fast and expects SO much of you (studying on the weekend, working out tons of proofs yourself). Honestly would not have passed without the TA (olivia), she's great in discussions and summarizes the material really well.
Favorite professor at BU! Super easy class and his lectures are entertaining.
He and the Chinese TA are f racist. They let the some people pass with a lower grade than other students just because the ethnic. They discriminate against the Asians especially international students. You have to be perfect like they cannot find anything wrong from you. So you will get a good grade
Amazing guy, an amazing professor, and he genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. If you show up and pay attention, he makes it easy to succeed.
Dan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom, and his teaching style makes MA583 concepts easy to understand. He always made sure everything was crystal clear, taking the time to explain things One of the highlights is his sense of humor. He loves making jokes that lighten the mood and make the lectures enjoyable.
One of the best professors at BU. MA582 is a tough class with lots of new concepts and theories. He knows the materials so well and can explain them without using obscure language, and he gives lots of examples to help understanding.
I LOVE THIS GUY! I hate math & took this for hub. Best decision ever. HW is a breeze if you go to class but if not, the concepts are not THAT hard to learn by yourself. There's only 3 grades in class: HW, Midterm, Final. He's a funny guy and really passionate about stats! He knows ppl take the class for hub so he makes it as easy as possible!
Such a great and funny guy! Make sure you go and pay attention to all lectures and you'll be fine, he really cares about all his students!!!
Dan's the greatest! He doesn't expect anyone to know work beyond the scope of the course and doesn't expect everyone to be the best math student coming into the course! Discussion and lecture notes are pretty important and helpful in understanding the work. His TA usually uploads everything tho. No attendance recorded and only 5 HWs for the term.
nearly impossible to study for exams. The successful students I know have access to previous exams. Generally just unfairly structured course. Teacher is chill, but he designed the course.
Hands down my favorite professor. Hilarious during lecture, very good at explaining concepts intuitively. He assigns a lot of optional homework, so it's very very tempting not to do them. But the exams are DIRECT copies of the problems, so make your decision. Also tempting not to show up to lectures + OH, but if you do, you'll be above average!
Professor Weiner is great. MA 582 can be tough but he thoughtfully proves / builds up course concepts. Funny guy as well. Do the optional HW questions he assigns in class! They're very helpful for studying.
take MA113 with Weiner, especially if you're trying to complete your quantitative reasoning 2! grade is based on 3 things (statslab (hw), midterm, final). textbook is helpful but statslab, midterm and final are all content directly from lectures. explains concepts and terms in a easy and digestible way.
The easiest classes I have taken at BU. Weiner is a funny guy who incorporates humor in his lectures. He understands most the students take this class for hub units, and does not make it difficult to succeed in his class. Lectures and discussions are optional, one midterm and a final. Exam content is practically directly from lecture material
The midterm was scheduled after the drop without W deadline, more than 1/4 of the students received grades below a C.When meeting with the professor for help, he often suggested dropping the course.I view this as creating an environment of unhealthy competition that made the entire learning experience unnecessarily stressful
Very nice person. He will try to help you the best he can.
so funny so chill he genuinely js wants everyone to do well pay attention do ur hw and ull be good
