The class is pretty easy to understand if you pay attention and skim through the chapters. But if you try to ask the guy for help and you catch him on a bad day, he's pretty mean.
I don't recommend this guy.Can be pretty cranky and boring. Gives homework every single day. Exams & homework in essay format plus 2-3 lengthy term papers (5 pg each). Keeps students until 9:30 pm. Seems like we're always the last to leave campus.
As long as you complete the homeworks and papers, achieving a "B" shouldn't be hard... The homeworks are lengthy and so are the papers, including the final. Reading the short novel isn't too bad.
I would recommend Dr. Williamson for this class. I liked the way he incorporated the book, Fast Food Nation, into the class. The homeworks are straightforward once you know what he's looking for. The exams are not difficult if you understand the hw.
I learned a lot in his class. He grades papers hard but his tests are easy as long as you understand the material. It's not at all hard to pull a B in his class as long as you do the work. He's one of the best professors I took in this school.
If you are in one of his classes, plan on listening to Hannibal Lecter (sp?) more often than anyone could possibly care for.
I would recommend him for Phil 186. He grades h/w and the paper pretty hard but his exams are really easy. They focus around the main ideas. His exams won't ask you for little details. Just study the main ideas he stresses in class. Remember to give
Very cool guy *if* he likes you. Just do your work/reading and you shouldn't have a problem. Very interesting class. His tests were as long as you want them to be just as long as you explain your reason clearly. Challenging, fun, and interesting class.
This guy is extremely moody. If he does not like you and you ask for help or for a question, he will look at you with despise. He doesn't like me but I'm still getting a B+. Getting a B or A in his class is not hard.
only a small group presentation, explains the kep concepts for the tests, goes over the hw answers. The tests are identical to the the hw he gives every week. Bad thing was that the hw was weekly and can be long essays.
Is clear in what he expects from you. Homework and exams are same routine everytime, just a lot of writing. He's an interesting teacher that will keep you up in class with laughs.
he's an outstanding teacher! as long as you do the homework and study what he asks for, then you will surely get an A/B in his class. Be a good student, then you will be on his good side. He may seem harsh at first, but stick in his class; it's worth it.
He did his discertation on Foucault and brings him into Phil of person. Focuses on Plato, Descartes, and Foucault. Fairly shallow when it comes to the other 10 or so philosophers. Great course for Soci majors who need the GE, or business folks.
He was definitley an awesome teacher. He would make comments that make his students wonder if he is allowed to say things like that or not, but it's all in humor. He is VERY sarcastic, but very helpful. Just do the homework. His tests are based onthe hw
Instructor is a little strange--likes to quote his favorite movies, especially Silence of the Lambs. Overall, he's a great teacher and his lectures really stick w/ you. Focus on the H/W because the exams are based off of them. Essays are not too bad.
For this class, take this teacher. He's not too hard and he's pretty amusing. The only part I hate about this class is the essays.
Won't shut up about his favorite philosopher, Foucault, and how he hates Bush. Does not take time to examine philosophical questions in class, but rather touches on a million different topics, so that you never know what you're really expected to know.
This class and teacher was overall very useless. I never really gained anything meaningful. The way he teaches though is pretty lax. The tests and papers were easy to do as well as long as you're a decent writer. I'd try another teacher.
Just get to know him and participate in class and you should be set. Focus on the homework since exams are based mainly from it. Overall you will learn alot of stuff in this class and elaborate and keep asking him questions to kill class time ;).
good teacher. homework is basically the test. do the hw you'll be fine, not that much hw. get to know him and particpate and he'll like you. picks on people when he knows they didn't come to class. come to class compared cause he asks questions. other than that overall good teacher and not that hard
He is definitely a great and awesome teacher. I loved his class. It is fun, energetic, and very informative. Just do your reading and hw and you will be just fine. He can be very grumpy, but his is very funny and sensitive to important issues.
2 WORDS: EASY, BUT BORING

He is a reasonably good teacher. He knows his subject, but does not clearly explain some of the older versions of writing in the text. Definatel do the reading and the homework. His grading is easy to moderate if you write well.
coolest guy ever. he might rub you the wrong way at first, but he is there to see his students succeed. he's really chill and laidback..a very odd yet interesting character.
He easily gets side tracked on related topics. However, if you challange him with a stong opinion and you're willing to argue your point then he will really get into a detailed arguement. Good grasp of the material and uses the book to it's fullest. Make sure to have the reading done.
The out of class wrk was a lot less boring than the class itself.

Be prepared to do a bit of reading and homework. There were two 5-6 page papers, some homework, and the 2 midterms and final were all essays. Do the homework and the tests will be OK. Professor Williamson is fair about grading.
Dr. Williamson is an awesome teacher. He opens your eyes to new outlooks on life.
Definitely a good teacher, and worth taking. Really considerate of his students and adds a good amount of humor and debate to his lectures. Make sure you go to class, study and understand the homeworks and u'll be fine.
Take this over phil 10. way easier than that class and fulfills same requirement. Well you actually have to study and do your work. there's quite a bit of reading. Interesting and intellectual teacher.

AWESOME teacher. Just do the homework and study that.....you will be fine. What is on the homework is exactly what is on the test. Great lecturer!! Not interested in philosophy at all but LOVED his class. EASY EASY EASY
Very good prof. I was not looking forward to this class buthe has made it a pleasure. Alot of reading and even more writing, but worth it. The home work quesitons are the same questions you'll see on midterms, so make sure you understand the homework and you'll do good on the exams. Fun, and interesting lectures. Read Fast Food Nation. good book
Very good professor, very intense, dry sense of humor, warm, and friendly, looks good in black leather.
Good teacher, likes to talk to get you started but stays pretty well focused. Dry humor, very.
Though the work was difficult, he's actually inspired me to into a new career path. I definitely recommend him. His jokes are a little old, but funny nonetheless--this guy's got a sense of humor! He's awesome.
Took this in the summer. He has very dry humor. Good teacher, easy to understand. His tests are the exact same questions as the homework. Just read and come to class you will be fine.
Dr. Williamson is a great teacher if you take the time to learn what he is teaching. Lot of reading and homework, but more interesting than most classes. Great sense of humor and really encourages class discussion - don't be shy. He actually appreciates other opinions. Great guy too.
Hez a really nice guy, got a good sense of humor and teaches well too- his exams are very easy- just the same as hw- so do the hw properly and you will do just fine -absolutey easy A- if you work a little hard- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Jokes are a little off, but depends on your sense of humor. 6 homework assignments (you need the text book for it), 2 midterms(essay style), 2 essays, final. Sounds like a lot but it's pretty easy. Good guy and he's really helpful if you need it.
He has problems with woman, so if you are a female you might want to take somebody else for this clas.
Lots of reading for this class, but make sure you do the mandatory homework, because it will help tremendously when you take the midterms.
His class is relatively easy, but you do not learn much. He has problems. He is often rude and needs to be kicked off his high horse every once in a while. Honestly, he has the attitude of the old greek philosophers- women are inferior. He is useless and unapproachable for outside assistance. If you want to LEARN, take Lindahl.
Dan is so contemptuous of "companies" that he should not be teaching "Business" classes at SJSU. Other than that he's a nice guy.
Williamson treats students like adults even though many arent ready for it. If you want to express thoughts, even argue with him, you'll be treated to a learning opportunity. Grades & format are easy but you wont benefit if you dont make an effort. Business will crush you if you dont understand ethics. Learn it or take a seat with Jeffrey Skilling!
Best way to do well is to do the homework. And then copy down the homework outlines in your textbook coz its open book. As a prof, he gets on your nerves coz he tends to say insensitive things. Good if you like talking a lot in class discussions instead of listening to the prof.
This professor is not very easy, but you do learn a lot from him. I took his class during the summer and he never lets you out early and it is a lot of material.
I cannot will an action of a maxim to become universal law that a professor of ethics teaches unethically. Dr. Williamson challenges students to approach issues in an ethical, logical manner. He interjects his own opinions, but always identifies them as such. In doing so, he teaches ethcially. To find out what this is all about, take his class.
I took him over summer. I must admit, I was freaking out at first. BUT, I pulled a B+ which means if I can do it, so can you! You just have to do ALL your HMW and I promise you WILL do great on your exams. Its not a hard class. And Dr. Willamson does not hate companies like some claim. :-)
Grumpy, complains about students frequently, and annoys easily. Difficult to figure out what exactly he wants in papers. Tests, fortunately, are far less ambiguous.
Sometimes when you ask questions he looks at you stupid. The work is pretty easy. Tests questions are straight from homework. He has a dry sense of humor which sometimes makes it uncomfortable haha.. overall ok class.
I liked the class. He can be grumpy, but overall makes the material and assignments interesting. I recommend taking this class.
He usually looks grumpy, but very approachable for help. 1 group project, several HW assignments, and 2 research paper. Tests are based on the HW, and he gives really good feedback on the HW and paper. He explains the concepts very clearly, especially when reviewing the HW. Overall, pretty easy class.
I was scared to take this teacher after reading this website, but he was actually pretty cool. He is witty, tells funny jokes, and doesn't grade too hard. He sometimes extends due dates too. Lots of writing assignments though. This is my favorite class this semester. I would take him again if he taught another class I needed.
He is very helpful. Dry sense of hummer. You just have to know how to approach him otherwise he might seem a bit cranky. Just study the quizzes and you will do fine. There is a lot of reading but over all I enjoyed the class. Anyone that says he was not good was lazy and did not do the reading.
I LOVED THIS PROFESSOR!!! He really makes you think, as any philosophy class often does. It is extremely important that you read the material so you understand his frame of reference. Look at the reviews, they speak for themselves. Its no joke, he made me laugh everyday, him and his coffee lol. Williamson is extremely educated. Take this class. A+
Even though I had an A, this prof is arrogant, unclear, and rude. Unclear with readings, easy tests, and does not like to be questioned. Nicer in class than when speaking 1 on 1. Very political. Inconsistent with views, i.e. will support homeless ppl's rights and then change views later on. Not hard, but he is annoying as a person. no curve.
I really enjoyed this professor. I understand where people are coming from when people say he is rude and blah blah blah. Underneath that big scary pipe smoking man is a cute little teddybear. you just need to find out how to stoke him the right way. basically he tells you the answers and he wants you to regurgitate with different examples.
Williamson is totally left politically speaking. He comes off like a hardass, and it doesn't let up. Despite this, he's a softy at heart. Do the homeworks, because they are what the exams are based on. Have patience, but the class is easy. Thanks Williamson.
I took this class during the summer. The assignments were easy just time consuming. The tests are straight from the homework. I got an A in the summer class and probably attended 75% of the classes. Understanding about late assignments, but don't push it. Books are required for h/w but they are not expensive.
He is a good teacher. Tests are straight from the homework which is really helpful. Best way to understand the material is to be there for lecture. He has a stong personality but can be funny and friendly if you actually talk in class. I would definitely recommend him. He knows his stuff!!!
I really enjoyed him as a teacher. Yeah, he seems intimidating at first, but he's actually really cool. He is smart and really understanding, just dont push it. His lectures are interesting as well
Professor Williamson can definitely seem intimidating at first, but he really just wants to hear peoples opinions. No need to read the book, but you must have access to one. Show up each class take notes, and DO THE HOMEWORK! It will save your life. Tests are based directly off the homework in essay format. 1 group presentation & 2 papers.
I did not like Dr. Williamson as a professor whatsoever. I found him to be incredibly disrespectful and demeaning towards students. There were a few discussions and some book readings that were enjoyable. He is flexible with due dates and papers/tests are easy as long as you regurgitate what he tells you in class.
This class was really fun. I learned a lot. The bookstore sells a digital version of the book, get that one, it makes the class sooo much easier. Pay attention and speak up often and he will never call on you randomly. Tests are kinda difficult, but you will only do poorly if you don't review the material. Take this class.
At first, he may seem stern and serious, but he is really cool. He totally understands that we all have other classes, so he's flexible with due dates. If you do not agree with a grade, he wants you to talk to him and he will change it. He cares about his class. DO THE HOMEWORK. Use it to study for test. WRITE NOTES IN TEXTBOOK. He lets you use the
The reading for this class isn't difficult but there is a lot of it. Do the hw because exam questions are some what, if not, the same questions! Make sure to hit the categories when writing and just provide him with what he wants. Other than that a passing grade in this class isn't hard to get. An A on the other hand...
Lectures are more of a conversation with students. Lacks constant structure. Writes on whiteboard and some times his writing is tough to decipher. Liked attending his lectures and hearing him get in to it, with other students. Study HW for midterms and Final. Fair grading.
I really enjoyed this class because it involves a lot of debate and discussion where you learn about the multiple perspectives on moral issues. To be successful, be sure to understand *his* definitions of key terms. He is very sarcastic which I found humorous, just don't take him too seriously. Good luck!
The first day I was terrified of Dr. Williamson -but soon learned there was nothing to fear! He loves you to contribute even if you don't agree with him. Read the chapters and take good notes. Do well on the homework- test questions are directly related to the homework!! There is no excuse to do poorly in his class.
At 1st he seems intimidating but hes actually a cool guy! Always cracking jokes and tells some amusing stories. The material itself is quite boring and dry, but overall its an easy course. As long as you come to class, especially the reviews for tests u'll do fine. He goes over everything & basically tells u what will be on the exams.
I do not understand why this professor has an overall high rating. He is a horrendous teacher. He is incredibily rude to the students. In regards to the homework, it doesn't matter if you looked up your answer in the textbook, but whether or not it matches word for word what he said in his lecture.
If you're disillusioned with America...this class can either make or break you. Simply put, I loved this dude..straight-forward, opinionated, and best of all...sarcasm with humor. Many mentioned his intimidating stature, but he's actually a softie.
Professor Williamson is a tough grader. The midterms are all essay-form and he is not an easy grader. Avoid and take another Professor, if possible.
Took him for the computers in society course which is unfortunately required for cs majors. Has no clue when it comes to computers. As for society, he is an anti-social leftist propagandist. Very boring, annoying class taught by a professor who just likes to hear himself talk. PHD is in gay studies. Avoid at all costs. Take class online if possible
This class is hard if you have no interest in philosophy. He is rude and moody, but sometimes has a fun sense of humor. Definitely go to class and take notes on whatever he is saying. He doesn't always make it clear when you should be writing things down, so write everything he says.
I thought this class was funny. He makes such dry sarcastic jokes. If you love Silence of the Lambs, take him. He seems mean and tough, but he's actually pretty chill. Id suggest taking someone else if you're easily intimidated.
He does go off on rants a lot, but he's a funny, nice guy and the class isn't hard once you figure out what he wants in homework assignments and essays. Nowhere near as bad as the other comment says. Why judge his knowledge of computers when he's a philosophy professor?
Seems stern at first, but he cares. Take good notes and follows his format and you will be fine, it's pretty simple. Exam is exactly like the hw. Material is boring. My friend calculated his grade and even if he got a 100% on the final, he couldn't receive an A in the class, grades came out and he had an A, MAJOR curve. Have a thick skin.
He is a good instructor without a doubt but he thinks that all the students have to be graded on the same scale among the students majoring in philosophy. Even if you tell him you are of different major and trying to get through the class, he follows strict grading scale and doesn't curve and pulls down your GPA
he expects you to participate in class, yet if u do and he disagrees he makes u feel horrible to the point of never volunteering again. take this class if u can handle being criticized and can argue with him even though if hes wrong he will keep going until u agree with him
He has a sense of humor that some people don't understand. I don't think he is that bad, I liked him. He is really into the philosophy side of things but if you go to class and pay attention you will get a good grade just like in regular class. I really like him a lot.
Overall, he is an Ok professor..pretty easy grader..but i did not learn very much about the american dream..and the last 6 weeks of classes were entirely devoted to long, boring group presentations..he should tweak the course a lil bit.. not bad class tho.
He's cranky most days, gives rude responses to students, & is unapproachable. However, he is very clear in his expectations and provides great feedback on assignments and tests. This class requires a lot of reading & writing, but if you go to lecture you'll do fine on the homework which is practically identical to the tests, so they're easy to ace.
The class is laid back and easy, however he does come to class grouchy. As long as you read the assigned material and come to class at least once a week, you will be fine. He is a very easy grader!
He is extremely rude to everyone and does not listen to students. To him its his way or no way at all. The only thing that taught me was the book. He rambles on the whole class session about pointless information. His test questions are awkwardly worded and don't make sense. I highly recommend you not take his class. THE WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD
Class is comprise of a group presentation, couple papers and a few easy tests. Do the reading and you'll do well. Just because the course is easy doesn't mean he is a good teacher. This guy loves making students feel inferior. I'd recommend his course as long as you have thick skin; it's an easy A, just don't expect any hallmark moments.
He might seem rude or grouchy but he is not. He has a great sarcastic sense of humor that you may have to be on his level to get. He is passionate about philosophy and helping his students pass.
Dr. Williamson is a good teacher,if you are easily intimidated do not take him. He is grouchy sometimes, but overall he is a very nice guy that makes you think about the unfairness of some employers. Easy class.
He's cranky most of the time, he will contradict everything students say even if it's his point of view too. He tries to encourage discussion but mostly everyone is afraid of his criticism to say anything. He gives extensive feedback on tests and papers. Tests are T/F, mult choice and short essay. Overall a pretty hard class.
His lectures are boring and he'll say maybe 1 or 2 important things a day. He tells a lot of jokes but it's hard to tell when he's being funny. If you read the book and write down what he puts on the board, his tests aren't too bad. There's 2 papers and he'll help you. He loves discussions and examples. Material isn't too difficult.
Worst. Class. Ever. 'Nuf said.
He's boring to listen to in class. No lesson plan unless there are group presentations. His tests are all from the book. One group project that's pretty easy. He occasionally takes attendance during presentations. Read the book & know the cases but it's not complicated material.
Phil 61 Moral Issues. He is the rudest professor i have ever encountered at SJSU. does not respect his students, swears in class, doesn't know how to be clear on the information he is trying to present, and never gives any information about homework assignments. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES EVER. you will regret it.
He doesn't really stick to a plan at all in class. Just read the book and you will do fine. Don't take personal his incredibly rude attitude when you visit him during office hours.
Yes, Dr. Williamson does have his moments where he can be moody, sarcastic, and rude to students during class and office hours. He tries to be funny sometimes because the subject itself can be dull.
The class wasn't too bad, however, follow exactly the format on the papers the Professor explains to you. The lectures are boring and at times he will pick on you if you don't talk. Group presentation was pretty easy if you DO follow the format. Professor is rude but I guess it is his style since he does care for you.3 papers, 2 midterms, 1 final.
The class is boring and professor made it hard. Just follow his instructions and read the book. sometimes professor is harsh due to students lack of interest.
This is not a case where a professor has terrible rating and you decide to take them regardless. Do not take his class. He is extremely inappropriate, rude, unorganized, and contradicting. Nothing only study guide/class is on the test. Best bet is to read the book thoroughly/carefully and keep as quite as you are able in class.
Williamson is not the best professor for a phil class. Lectures are really boring. You don't need to attend class if you read the book. 1 group presentation, 2 papers, 2 tests
Professor Williamson is not thatgreat.. hes a nice guy but can be very creepy and weird. The class is extremely boring, you dont really ever have to go. His grading is alright. I dont think he understands this is a GE course.. overall if you want an easy C/B then take his course. But it is not interesting what so ever. Also there are too many books
He's mean and unclear he talks about random crap doesn't make sense at all I barley came to class and just read the book I was sure I was gonna get a Cish but was surprised to see that I got a B he had 4 exams and a comprehensive final plus 2 papers and a group project. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone because of how rude and obnoxious he is.
I met this instructor in the elevator at the BBC. After trying to start a small conversation with him, he immediately interrupted and told me to “cut the Bulls**t”, so I just became silent. I felt very intimidated, and I hope that I’ll never encounter this guy again :(
Dr. Williamson was one of my favorite professors I ever had at SJSU. He has a very unique sense of humor that a lot of his students do not understand and often times mistake for rudeness. Do the readings, come to class most of the time, and don't be afraid to ask questions!
There's two midterms and one final that is comprehensive and two papers and a group project just read the book and come to class occasionally you will do fine. He's super rude and annoying. He's a really easy grader I thought I was gonna get a C or lower but passed with a B. Don't talk in class too much or he will just embarrass you just sit there.
He is super old and hasn't stayed up to date with how to teach. He's really rude and curses at students. He's really arrogant. And his lectures don't help at all so you have to teach yourself the whole semester. He always goes off on tangents. Worse class ever I learned nothing from him DO NOT TAKE HIM
Come with a thick skin and self confidence. Many students are intimidated by him, I don't think he means to be that way, he appreciates participation but not interruptions. He notices if you are not in class and may call you out for missing class. Not particularly clear with his assignments or deadlines.
He has his days where he can be helpful and nice, and other days where he can be mean and think we are all stupid. It makes it hard to approach him, because he can be intimidating. He could probably make you cry! Lectures are a bit confusing because he talks most of the time, no notes on a power point type. (Which I prefer, but that's ok.)
His lectures at times could be tedious, but as he lectures on interesting topics people are most likely going to pay attention. He has a dry sense of humor. He is really good at faking accents. Midterms are based on class lectures and assigned readings. Study guide tends to be useless, until the final. If you take the time to see him, he is nice
While he might not be the nicest professor in SJSU, but I really think he's smart and straight to the point. It's hard to argue a point with him but I learned a lot from his perspectives. There's 3 tests total, one group project and 3 papers. Which is not too bad at all. Take his class and learn something new!
Although he may be intimidating and blunt, he is really knowledgable and brings in great outside examples. Interesting movie references, funny accents, and different sense of humor. There is 1 group project/presentation, 1 homework assignment, 2 papers, and 3 tests. His lectures occasionally have information not included in the textbook.
Get the book youll need it. hes an okay grader... hes picky in a sense you need to remember what he says in lecture because it will be on the test. take good notes because hell just put like 5 words on the board and just talk about it all lecture. 3 tests. 2 papers. 1 group project. no homework. he loves startrek and starwars.
Not clear on assignments or deadlines, says "to be announced". When he's angry he starts slamming things, hates tardiness. Will call you out in front of class. Not very organized. Essay heavy. He wants you to know the lesson, but isn't really a great teacher of them. Philosophy was great now ill never take it again.
I think people misunderstand him. He has a unique sense of humor and a lot of knowledge. He's not afraid to be blunt and straightforward and personally i respect that but some people are intimidated by him. He has his bad days but overall I liked him. If you get his jokes he can be hilarious.
He can be a lot to get used to at first but his class is really easy. As long as u read the book you'll do fine. He gives study guides that are pretty sufficient for the tests and he grades your papers fairly easy. I went to class maybe half the time. He can be rude but it's a easy A and you get used to his dry humor.
Has very dry humor, and is old school. He does not like it if you are late and is blunt with everything. If you pay attention in class and do the readings you will be okay! The midterms and final consists of t/f questions and then multiple choice questions along with 2 short essay questions (its open book for the essay questions)
he's intimidating and can be sarcastic. He's not clear on what to do for assignments. alot of reading, he doesn't like it when you get to class late so be there on time because he'll take roll when a lot of students do not show up.
he's not good at actually "teaching" the concepts & just reads out of the book & goes off on tangents. barely assigns anything & is very vague on what he wants & due dates. Is not happy usually and is very sarcastic. I didn't think I'd dread coming to one of my G.E. classes so much. he expects everybody is a philosophy major
The worst teacher Ive had since entering the school system. I have an A in every other class and a C in his. He doesnt teach things to the class in a manner that we dont know this material at all. He just lectures like we already know the chapters and expects us to keep up. Definitely need to put in a lot of studying alone if you want to pass.
Okay but seriously, I saw this man in the hallway of the Student Union and I said hello, he did not say anything back and at this point in the semester, he should know who I am especially since I come to every class and come to get help. I have A's in my other classes, but a B in this one. Grader does all the work, I regret taking this class...
He's extremely confusing. If you don't come to class, you're not missing out on anything important at all because he reads straight from the book. I've never missed anybody's class so much but still got A's on every quiz and test. Easy class to pass but he's a terrible professor. Doesn't use canvas, boring, and doesn't update grades, also rude.
I took him this past semester for PHIL57 and although he can be boring, his class is not hard. Just read the chapters in the book carefully, and show up to class a few days before the test (which is when he starts reviewing for it). He'll tell you the general gist of what's going to be on it - just read the book like I said and write good papers.
This was the easiest class I've ever taken. All you gotta do is ask him what's on the test and he'll let you know. Also if you only memorize the definitions in the textbook I guarantee you'll get 100% on his quizzes. sometimes he gives little pop quizzes in class if he feels attendance is too low btw.
Assignments unclear, students ask for clarification he says It's simple I dont know why you dont understand. Tells you to go watch a youtube video . Grades harshly if your answers are not worded like the book. Feedback is poorly worded and not proofread, grades essays based on his opinion and if view aligns with his.
Class was easy. Did not upload grades since day 1. U only get grades after final exam. Reading the book is required & also studying it. He'll let you know what is on the quizzes & exams. Calls on people even if you don't volunteer. Racist but doesn't know it. Kept asking only foreign Asian students (2) if they had COVID bc they were wearing masks.
He can be a bit abrasive at times but only really gets upset if you're not paying attention, though it can get a little overboard for people who just want clarification. I found the sarcastic humor endearing for the most part. Definitely some better choices but if you get him, read what is requested and participate and you should be fine.
Enjoyed his class. He cares and brings a good personality. The subject is dry but with his style of teaching he makes it fun. Laughed a lot and he I understanding to situations, he works with you, no issues.
He hasn't post grades at all on canvas and expects you to email him or calculate it yourself. Lecture is textbook based, sometimes hard to follow along since he goes on tangents. He'll call on students to read/answer questions when they don't volunteer. Rude to students, he expects you to be caught up with materials. You will NEED a textbook.
The class was scattered and unclear, and the prof was hostile to many students who asked questions. He would go on tangents and stray from topics. If you dont read the material before the lecture you will have no idea what he is talking about. The underlying homophobia, transphobia, and mildly racist remarks made the class unbearable
Super unclear with grading. Does not post grades onto Canvas, which was super unhelpful since I took him asynchronously. The only assignments that really make up your grade are a couple midterms and TONS of discussion posts. I REPEAT: HE IS A DISCUSSION POST PROFESSOR. If you do not like that, do not take him.
I regret taking this boring class. I haven't learned a single thing from his lectures and it's super difficult to stay engaged cause he goes on these long and confusing talks. His handwriting is messy and when he writes on the board it makes no sense, hard to take notes. I don't even know my grade and it's past the middle of the semester.
do not take this class. this man is so unbelievably unorganized its crazy. he doesnt assign homework, then gets mad when you didn't read something he never mentioned. the class is very essay and discussion based while on zoom, but tbh the essays aren't that hard. however the stress isnt worth it.
spring '20 - made my anxiety spike up during class. he has very old-fashioned humor but casually likes to pick on his students. i always got lost during lecture and his handwriting is impossible to read. does not utilize canvas at all, so you have to email him for your grade. overall not an approachable person. surprised i even passed lmao
He is cranky, sarcastic, and irritable. He once got mad because my class did not laugh at his joke. He offers a good amount of office hours, which is nice for makeup exams or questions. He has no sort of filter and creates a difficult learning environment.
Trust my word, never take this professor. He is cruel on grades. Wether it be for a small discussion post or midterm, he will go hard on you. Attendance is required and so strict on behavior. He does not inspire and increases your stress. All for a GE requirement. Not worth it, take someone else.
Do not take this Professor. He does not know how to use canvas, grades harshly, and produces a tense environment while in his class. I have no interest in ever returning to his class.
He's tough at first because he seems difficult but he seems to really care about the criteria he is teaching. He doesn't use canvas which can be tough, so he's more old school. Got to be patient with him but he means well. Couple midterms and papers
if you love philosophy, do not take this professor. I lost all motivation because of him. DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO USE CANVAS AND DOES NOT POST GRADES. He has a very old school and traditional mindset. Would never take again.
Very unorganized and does not use canvas at all. Grade policy is unclear. Final exam consisted of 3 essay portions. All this stress for a GE. Never take this professor, you will waste a semester stressing. He made me rethink going to SJSU, Im so serious about that. Look at all his ratings and save yourself the trouble. NEVER AGAIN WILL I TAKE DAN.
Bad representative of San Jose State. Never take this Professor, consider Professor Brown
I noticed a great majority of my class is speaking up about his teaching methods on this platform. You decide if you truly want to be educated by this professor. As for my opinion, I highly recommend you stay far away. San Jose State is better than this.
To stay as professional as I can, never take this man. Incoming freshmen reading these reviews. don't even think about it man. Its not worth the mental health. Our final was 3 hand written essays and he never used canvas throughout the semester! horrible for a simple GE professor.
He insulted my paper by grading it in front of the class and handed it to me after in front of everyone. Humiliating. I will never want to wish that embarrassment on anyone.
Does not use canvas. Beware.
He made me mentally opt out of Philosophy because of the tense environment he set in his classes. Also, does not show grades or incorporate canvas. we have to fend for ourselves to know if we pass or not.
If you want to pass with an A, get ready to read and write every paper like its a research paper.
Very Traditional and Does not Use Canvas.
It is mandetory you go to class and read the material. Honestly, the class made me work hard, maybe was fun for awhile but would not take again. Professor had nice jokes but lacked organization and classroom enthusiasm. Not using canvas was horrible.
this class shouldn't have been this hard imo, there's not a lot of work so if you mess up/miss an assignment you might be screwed. we also don't do anything in class besides lecture/reading. also he does not use canvas so you don't know your grade and he doesn't really respond to emails lol
I struggle with my mental health enough as it is. Coming back after missing one class for personal reasons, this man is awful. I have never had a professor be so disrespectful. He genuinely is somebody who treats students as just another thing to be paid for. Don't take his class. (philosophy 57)
one of the worst professors on campus. when students ask for help / clarification on topics that he fails to talk about, he throws a fit about how none of the students are prepared for the class. humiliates people for asking good questions because he perceives them as dumb. extremely syllabus based but doesn't actually talk about it. terrible.
Very traditional and does not care for his students. I would never take this professor again and would encourage everyone to avoid this professor. my mental health is much worse now because of this course. I am very disappointed in san jose state for allowing such a professor to continue acting so out of pocket and harsh.
No clear grading criteria and he doesn't use Canvas. Tbh everyone talking about how mean he is probably didn't attend his class often; he treats you alright if you attend class. He's not a bad guy, he's just not good at teaching. Most of his lectures are long winded and I don't think anyone in the class understood what the point of them were.
Do not take this professor, he is disrespectful and does not care for his students, I dropped this course because he was too much . Will not be taking a course with the professor again. Course is lectured based with a lot of reading and his teaching is very confusing. Overall not a good professor.
Rest in Peace Dr. Williamson. You were tough professor but a good man once I got to know you. You really pushed me to examine the texts deeper and have a better understanding of the information. You made me a better writer and a better philosophy student. Rest in Peace
Dr. Dan Williamson passed away this morning. He was 74 years old. After working in the steamship industry for several years he went back to school and pursued his one true passion, philosophy. He earned his PhD at UC Riverside in 1996. He taught at SJSU for over 25 years. He loved guitars, smoking pipes, and whiskey. He will be missed.
