he's awesome
Tough class, difficult material but interesting and fun lectures

Great lecturer...tests aren't easy, but the class is wonderful

i loved this class... he was great! we didn't have a textbook either =)
This class is very challenging, espcecially the tests, but Dan is an amazing professor. He makes his lectures very interesting even with boring material. I wouldn't reccommend taking this class without Dan as the teacher, however,
Very funny, sarcastic lecturer, lots of examples and pop culture. Good use of powerpoint. Wrote the book, which is very readable. Tests are tough but fair.
Took this class my first year. Willingham is hilarious, the funniest professor I've had here. Tests are hard, but I definitely recommend his class.
awesome lecturer, genuine guy. definately makes the large lecture hall seem small and keeps you entertained.
yes he's funny and sarcastic, but the class average for the final when i took it was a 57. that's percent, people. beware of the fact that his tests are miserable, but at least you won't feel like skipping lecture everyday.
He is soooo nice and very clear. Never makes you feel bad for asking "dumb" questions. Great teacher, great guy.
Great lecturer and professor...even his book is an easy read. His tests are another story. Terribly hard tests! (but he does curve) Overall, his class is worth it (if you go to the lectures)
I dunno about this class...I consider myself pretty darn good at psychology but I got a C as a final grade. Tests are RIDICUOUSLY hard; there is a curve but it's ridiculous to have a 70% be equal to an A. Just make the tests easier!!! I found his book difficult to read, and there are no color pics!
Ok, these comments are unfair. The tests are hard, but that's because it HAS to be. There are over 250 people in the class and he needs a good spread. And he has a great statistical method to figuring out final grades. Overall, he's a funny guy and I'm glad I had him. I took him for fun since I'm an engineer and in my own hell in eschool.
Willingham is the best prof I've had at school so far. He's absolutely hilarious! Plus he wrote the textbook so he knows how to teach it. The tests are ridiculously hard though, but questions are taken pretty directly from the book. Attend lectures regularly, which isnt too hard to do coz he's lots of fun in class. Overall, it's a great class!
Best professor ever. Hard tests. Allready been said.
Tests very hard. When I took the class, the average on the final was an F.
Best lecturer I've ever had. knows his stuff, great sense of humor, great powerpoint slides. this is the only class i look forward to. I don't think his tests were that insanely hard, i pulled A-, B+ on the first two tests without working too hard.
Willingham missed his calling as a stand-up comedian! He's a great lecturer! You must attend class and read the book to get a decent grade. He wrote the book, and its a pretty easy read. Tests are very tricky. Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A.
wonderful professor. i actually looked forward to his lectures. tests are challenging, but with the purpose of creating a wide range. excellent class.
Great Lecturer, seems pretty interested in the topic. Really funny also. Even though he has his slides up, it's useful to go to class because he explains everything there. Reading the textbook is pretty important too.
One of my favorite classes at UVA! Dan's a great lecturer and tries really hard to make tests fair. His tests are a good combo of both lecture and book material. I didn't think the tests were hard, but grading is really tight since a lot of people do well. His class made me change my major, enough said.
Good lectures, textbook was surprisingly bearable. Tests were very detailed though, and his "study tips" were basically to study more. Definitely recommended but don't expect an easy A.
He's a great lecturer, both incredibly knowledgeable and able to impart his knowledge well. Is very involved in his subject area. Not an easy A, but not killer either. Funny, interesting, and highly recommended, though the non-mandatory review sessions weren't very helpful to me.
He is superbly engaging and clearly loves the material. He is intelligent and understands pedagogy enough to make the lectures and readings very easily digestible. Yes this class is difficult, but he gives students every opportunity to succeed:There are helpful review sessions each week and before exams and he makes available useful practice exams.
Fantastic teacher who really cares about students, especially because he's interested in educational psych and teaching methods. Textbook (written by him) is probably one of the best I've ever had and lecture is hilarious with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Go to lecture for a laugh, study like hell for tests BUT you drop the 1 midterm!!
Class material would seem somewhat boring but Willingham makes class amazing! Hilarious lectures. 3 tests and final, lowest of 3 tests dropped. You will have to do some studying though.
Fun class. Professor Willingham makes class entertaining and enjoyable. Three tests and a final with lowest test dropped. Subject matter is interesting and Willingham makes the topics easy to understand and relates it to common things. Would definitely take him again. Need to study for the tests but is easily possible to get an A
Classic great teacher horrible grader combination. You'll learn lots but your grade will not reflect it. If you take his course be prepared for multiple choice that relies mostly on confusion for difficulty and the feeling that your marginal increase in effort doesn't amount to marginal increase in grade points. Very entertaining in class. C+
Willingham is a great professor and his class was very interesting. His tests are very hard though but he curves pretty well
Great lectures, but to do well on the tests you HAVE to read the book.Vocabulary review really helped me in this class.
dwilly is the man! i wasn't really interested in cognition before, just needed it for requirements. and some of the stuff goes way over my head. but dwilly relates it to everyday things and is absolutely hilarious. one of the funniest profs. i've ever had.
He was so funny and made lectures so fun to attend. Great professor!
Fantastic Professor, interested in subject matter, tests are hard and require studying lecture powerpoints as well as the text
Willingham is the man. You have to study hard but his tests are fair. He's the funniest professor ever and lectures are fun just to listen to him.
Willingham is AWESOME. and hot.
Interactive lectures. Very entertaining. Tests are hard but fair.
Awesome teacher. go to class he's really funny but read the book too
He is the man. Nothing much else to say. Take the class.
He rocks! and he's a HOTTIE!!! he's a funny, really good teacher
He's kind of hard, but if you read the book and go to class you should be fine. A great professor and really funny!
He uses powerpoint presentations that feel like punchline jokes. They are quite entertaining, featuring many slides just to make you laugh. The material is interesting and quite easy to grasp. The tests are difficult multiple choice questions and the class is graded on a curve, making A's quite difficult to achieve. Overall, he is awesome though.
Go to class, read the book, and you should really enjoy the class. Don't wait until the last minute to do readings though because they will take forever to do all at once.
He is an amazing lecturer, but you do have to put a significant amount of time in outside of the classes if you want your grade to show what you've learned. Some of the test questions are tricky but if you know the material you can figure them out.
He's legitimately a hilarious guy. The best thing to do is attend lecture (they're usually very interesting and always funny), take notes only on what isn't directly in the powerpoint, read the book a couple days before the test (it's not too bad), and be prepared for some tricky (but doable) test questions. Very well taught class.
Genuinely engaging and funny lectures, but the tests can be difficult. Just make sure you take notes on things not expressly written on the slides because they don't really make sense without the lecture.
If I had to do it again, YES I would take this course. I've learned a great deal. It's not easy, but not impossible either. Requires a good deal of effort, since the exams aren't a walk in the park. But once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad! Grades are curved. Lecture and text are equally important. Study hard and you'll see results!
Great lecturer - really funny. It is important to take notes on what he says but isn't on the slides.
He's amazing. The class is amazing. My major is now amazing because it's PSYCHOLOGY! Truly inspired me to major in Psychology. Take this class. It's not an easy A but definitely worth it.
Prof. Willingham is the man. Lectures are engaging, useful, and most of the tests are based on them. Tests are famed to be very difficult, but their really not that bad. Doing the reading helps a lot. As a point of hilarity, he asked us to give him some chili peppers on this sight because he felt shortchanged. So I did. He's awesome.
Very funny. Makes class subjects that would otherwise be boring very interesting by adding witty comments and the occasional hilarious pictures/links.
awesome, best of the best
Challenging course but if you put the effort in you'll get a lot out of it. Awesome professor
D.W is the MAN! He keeps lectures interesting with his humor and wit, so they're always enjoyable. His exams can be a bit challenging but he's very good at making sure he has covered any material he puts on the exams. Go to lecture, read the book, and you'll be golden.
Prof. Willingham was a great professor!
Professor Willingham was a great professor. One of the best I have had at UVa, and perhaps even in life. Be sure not to skip any of the lectures as they are very very important. And since he is so witty and funny, you'd always want to attend anyway!
Professor Willingham is AWESOME. He's hilarious and always keeps class light and fun, despite the (sometimes) dry material. The tests can be a little difficult, but if you study you will be fine. One of the best classes I've taken in my college career thus far.
Williamham is a great professor. He's funny and is able to keep class interesting (for the most part). The book and lecture didn't always match, so READ THE BOOK. make sure u keep up with the reading b/c it's important for exams. tests can be REALLY HARD but don't procrastinate and you'll be fine
amazing professor!
Dan is the man. His lectures are engaging and humorous, and he is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. His tests are hard though, so be prepared for that. Most exam material comes from the lecture.
funny. exams are hard, but if you pay attention to the details in the text and attend most (all would be better) of the lectures then you will be fine. the questions are tricky, but that is like every psych test i have encountered. INTERESTING subject.
Great class! Very easy if you're interested in the subject. He presents the information very clearly. Extremely hilarious and engaging! The textbook is very wordy; I didn't need it.
Very intelligent and fantastic lecturer; clear, gets info/point across, structured, and amusing. You really must have everything down pat from the lectures and texts, because the exams are difficult and will be cryptic to the unprepared student. You will learn a lot if you put in effort. Highly recommend
He is an absolutely fantastic professor!! Definitely recommend his class. He is absolutely hilarious, engaging, clear in his lectures, and really wants to make sure everyone understands his material. Take this class if you can even though the exams are tough. It is worth it.
Incredible teacher-one of the best at UVA. Very knowledgeable about the subject and presents it with both clarity and humor. Tests aren't as bad as they used to be (33.5/40 mean on tests for Fall '11)If you go to the lectures and read the book, you'll probably get an A-/B+.
Class didn't have any homework other than reading. Tests are hard though. Professor is really personable and entertaining.
Definitely take notes with a laptop, because it is important to write down most of what he says. His slides have the outline of information, but he explains it. So you really have to go to class. But I never wanted to miss, because he is so entertaining. He throws a few jokes into every lecture. The textbook isn't as important, but should be read.
...Dang. This class. The professor is kind, energetic, knowledgeable, personal and hilarious. Type really fast!! Get everything! His test questions are one of those kinds where all the questions sound right, in fact, all of them usually are but you have to choose "the one that is BEST". Killed me every time.
Willingham is amazing. The class is easier if you have a bit of a background in psych and you are interested in the material -- otherwise the tests can be tough. There are only 3 grades (including the final) so you need to be good at multiple choice tests to do well.
Great lecturer, wanted to come to class. YOu also kind of need to because tests are more based on lecture.
He is an incredibly charming professor! I am a huge fan of his, he's a great guy. Loved his lectures although some were a bit dry. I think the whole class knocked out once. Tests are tricky but if you figure them out early on and are careful it's not too bad. Must attend lectures and read.
Even though he goes really fast in his lectures and sometimes can be unclear, the class is definitely worth it in the end!
A fairly likeable guy. Entertaining enough to listen too, but you'll have to be able to type quickly if you want to get everything down. Test are somewhat difficult; multiple answers will seem correct a lot of the time- the correct one is the one that applies most specifically to the question, though that isn't always so clear cut.
Although my rating seems low, I definitely recommend this class. Take notes and get everything he says. He's super nice -I went to talk to him twice and he really makes you feel better about the class. As others have said, figure out the tests early (I bombed the first). The class is funny and very interesting but you must have good notes and read!
Dan is the man! His personality is great, and his jokes are even better. The only downside to this class is that it was a pretty tough psych course. As a psych major, I actually had to study like crazy to get a decent grade. He grades using a bell curve so it all depends how the class does as a whole. Material was interesting, but you have to study
I like psychology. I like Professor WIllingham. He's funny, his jokes are great. Overall, class is good. Can be a bit boring at points. Make sure you study for the tests, they can be tricky. If you the readings and go to the lecture you should be fine. I'd recommend the class if you want to be a psych major but not just as a fun class.
While his tests are hard, if you study and do the readings (and follow his study techniques given to you at the start of the semester), you can definitely get an A. He was very funny and always tried to make his lectures interesting and engaging. Must go to classes and you have to do the readings if you want to do well.
He makes class interesting but he goes so fast so it's almost impossible to get everything he says clear enough for you to understand later and then he tests you on specific things that you only talked about once. Like you have to know everything. I just felt that this class was unnecessarily hard. I wouldn't take it unless you absolutely have to.
Professor Willingham is one of my favorite professors at UVA. His class was very challenging but the review sessions were very helpful and he was accessible through collab at all times. His lectures were sometimes a little information heavy.
Three exams (lowest dropped) and final make up your grade. Willingham is awesome and he keeps the lectures super engaging (even when you get completely lost). For psych majors, definitely a better option that cognitive neuroscience.
Prof. has his own textbook which I thought was great because it is almost identical to lectures. The material is pretty similar to psych 1010, with emphasis on certain topics. His tests were easy, but I always thought that his lectures were a bit unstructured and hard to follow (the textbook was my bible). Super nice guy and very accommodating.
His lectures were ridiculously long, unstructured, and pretty boring. The questions on the 2 midterms and final were extremely tricky and difficult. There was no other coursework that went into your final grade, so if you don't do well on the exams there was nothing you could do to pick it up. I wouldn't recommend this course unless you need it.
I loved Prof Willingham as a lecturer because of his personality, but to be honest the content was dense and hard to fully grasp during the lectures. My main grievance was with the exams- they were extremely difficult, particularly the final, but he's really fair about curves. As long as you read his book you should be fine
This class has the harsest tests i have ever taken. This man literally specializes in human learning yet I felt like his lectures gave me nothing lol. He will talk about everything BUT the definition of a concept. Really nice guy, just a very hard class in my opinion. I also took it to fill a requirement which was not wise.
The material is interesting, but the tests were absurdly difficult. On the midterms, there were questions where the answer was only mentioned once in the text and wasn't referred to any other time in text or lecture. You'll learn a lot about cognitive psych, but unless you devote 20+ hours to each test, your grade will likely not reflect that.
Professor Willingham is the best lecturer I have had at UVA. He is great at making the material make sense while also keeping it interesting. However, his tests are very difficult, and the entire grade is based on them. I would make sure to never miss class and always attend his study sessions.
Great professor. Tests were difficult (everything mentioned can be tested), but the grade was curved.
This class was by far the most difficult one to do well in. There is 3 midterms and a final, and that was all you had for your grade. He did not help in the lectures for the exams and he did not provide any form of study guides to help with the exams. I devoted so much time in his attending his lecture and reading HIS textbook and I still failed.
To succeed, you need to: 1. Attend every lecture and take detailed notes on every single topic discussed. Almost every topic covered has an exam question. 2. Read every chapter (13 of them) and take detailed notes. Some topics on exams are only covered in the book. 3. Be ready to study 5-10 hours for each exam, actually learn the material.
Willingham is a great professor, the lectures were interesting but the class is graded based only on tests and they are HARD. You can be tested on ANYTHING in the book and any small thing he mentions in lecture. Get ready to take extensive notes and make sure to memorize everything if you want to get an A. He curves fairly well tho.
This class is graded only on exams. Even though the worst score is removed, the exams are difficult and Willingham does not tell you the curve until after the final, making the class much more stressful because you don't know your grade until its over. You need to spend a large amount of time memorizing the book/lectures to do well in this class
Professor Willingham was a very entertaining lecturer and made Cognition quite interesting to learn about. Only reason I got a B- is because I didn't study the material closely enough, if you pay attention in lectures and do the reading and study properly an A should be easy.
