Dana is rad. She reminds me of the actress in Me & You & Everyone We Know. She's enthusiastic & gives insightful commentary on the works she presents. The tests are super easy: just slide identification (including dates) & fill in the blanks that you'll know from memory if you attend class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. museum visits will never be the same!

Well I had her for CONTEMPORARY ART 102 for the Fall of 2006!!! First off she the class was 3 hours which I thought wasn't that bad at first but then she would run class over until 10:15 to 10:25 even which is terrible that alone pissed me off!! Then her test are way to freakin hard she makes memorize (70 paintings/pictures on average from a hardas
Then her test are way to freakin hard she makes memorize (70 paintings/pictures on average from a hardass textbook) the artist, the title/the year/and all the info about the work!! All in all a very unique class that has very unique information!!
A VERY PASSIONATE TEACHER AND A GREAT LECTURER. I AM GLAD THAT I TOOK ASIAN ART HISTORY WITH HER. YOU WON'T FALL ASLEEP IN HER CLASS BUT HAVE TO MEMORIZE A LOT OF PICTURES FOR TEST.
she's genuinly into her job, and she makes class interesting. i like her alot.
Dana is passionate about what she teaches. If you are not interested in art, and you're taking her art history classes in order to sound more educated. (ex. pysch majors) then you might fall asleep, attend every class, and take notes, and have interest in the topic and you CAN'T go wrong! She has a fun dorky sense of humor too:)
She's a great teacher... and she's got a really cute personality.
I LOVE HER! she is a very passionate about what she is teaching. yes, there're lots of pictures to memorize. but she explains everything and tells you what's important for test. and her study guide is very helpful. she has very cute personality and respects every students. take her class!
this is one of my favorite classes i took last semester. dana was pretty rad, she has A LOT to say, she never let us our early and always started on time. the tests were alright just study the guide she gives you and take good notes on the comparisons. we had a 2 volume book...i never opened it and got a B.
She is an awsome teacher! You get marked down if you dont go to class. Which is fine. She gives a great study guide and if you stay after to ask questions before the test she will really help you out and give you pointers. A+ on her teaching. Its just LOTS of memorization for tests.
Good teacher! however, she likes to use up every single minute she's got, but other than that, she's a good teacher, she likes to dedicate a lot of her time to art, and it shows. she's a great teacher
Dana is extremely fun and easy to follow. She is very knowledgable about the subject and related subjects, so it's easy to understand. Her tests are made very easy to study for and most of the information you need to know is from the lectures, but the book helps clarify as well.
Dana bends over backwards to help students learn the material. There are study questions, study guides and in-class discussions of what is on the tests. She's enthusiastic and expects students to perform at a college level. She's very accessible and helpful. Attending her class was a privilege and a pleasure.
She is one of the best teachers at OCC. I have taken her for art 102 and 103 (got an A in both). Just do your work and review the study guide. It is easy if you put the time and effort. Trust me!
So passionate about the material! She has easy assignments but everything becomes imprinted because of her stories and excitement. She stutters a bit. Did not buy the book, however I learned the material and received an A.
She's cool..!! and her class is okay but if you are the one who can't just take note by ONLY listening to what teachers telling you..you shouldn't take it coz all she put on her power point lecture are some pictures and the date. Everything else, u just get it from what she says on that day..so if u miss the class...well..sucks for u..
She is a really good teacher but over lectures. will repeat herself several times. Never lets you our early. Interesting powerpoints with a lot of pictures. Tests are easy is you attend class and study. She is very passionate about art.
Very cool teacher. She's also got a funny sense of humor too so you'll always be entertained in her class. However, you cover so much info in almost every class (especially near finals week) that it does get a little boring. But her humor will keep you in check. Easy Class. Easy A. Just study the guide she gives you with the dates etc and ur good!
Great professor. Very helpful and the homework is minimal. Tests can be difficult if you don't pay attention or don't study. Mandatory paper isn't difficult, only 2 pages. Really immerses you into art.
Dana Doyle is awesome.
She is a good teacher...boring,never lets you out early, lectures through the whole class and she thinks she is funny. But over all I learned alot
nice teacher and very helpful
Here's the thing, if you want an A in the class, its easy, but you'll probably gunna have to study. I got a D on my first test, then a perfect score on the next. extra credit will help. good teacher
Dana is awesome! One of my fav classes I've ever taken!
it is easy if you take notes and study. if you do the hw its practically garanteed full points and easy points. study dates and people for pictures. its pretty easy. doesn't let you out early but who cares leave if you want to
i started taking this class because i had to for my g.e. and i wasn't happy because its 7-10 on tuesday nights but i can say that is my favorite class. there is work due pretty much every week but not the week after a test. but she makes you type your work but i like it, it makes me feel professional. she's tight, the class is tight. TAKE IT :]
basically 3 tests, 2 museum visits by LA (Getty Center & Norton Simon), 2 compare & contrasts essays, and 3 Desert Island picks (which is where you describe 3 different artworks and you relate it to your life..etc) She is so nice and her class is entertaining. You actually learn about the artwork. For tests, just Study the STUDY GUIDES which are eas
I can't say enough how much I love this class! Mrs. Doyle is a really nice lady. Tests are not hard at all, but you need to study if you wanna get an A. Her class is interesting. There are a lot of extra credits opportunities. Take her!
Im going to miss her class! She is so nice and really knows the subject! She teaches you in a way that youll remember and understand. The tests are not hard, you just have to memorize simple stuff. She grades easy. =] take her!
This class would be painfully boring if it is taught by the wrong kind of teacher but Dana Doyle makes this class extremely enjoyable. She has a passion for contemporary art so if you are going to take a class of hers shoot for contemporary art.
she is very nice. There is a total of maybe 5 assignments and they are not that hard (2 of them are museum visits). also she gives you plenty of time to do them; just be careful because they are due on the same day. test are easy, the majority of what is on them is in her lectures, and very little in the book. its a long class but its not boring.
Although her class can be long and boring, you can tell that she is passionate about art. She likes to use up all her time and will hold you after to finish her lecture at times. Attendance is taken twice each day. Just buy a book and do the study guides and you will get an A or B in her class.
The best thing about this class is how entertaining it is to hear Dana talk. She turns learning about contemporary art into a patchwork of interesting stories. The study guides, if completed will make the tests a breeze just show up for class, listen and complete the few papers required. Not only will you get an A but you will probably have fun too
Professor Doyle is incredible---extremely passionate about art, helpful, funny, etc. She made this class more than enjoyable, and I looked forward to her lecture every week. Even if you're not terribly interested in art, you will be after you take this class.
i was really considering dropping the class 2 classes in because the it was sooo long, but glad that i stayed because it was overall pretty easy, just review the study guides thoroughly and turn in all your work
Take her, she's a great professor. Can't wait to take her for next semester. :)
One of the best professors I've ever had. I came into the class with little to no interest in art and walked out with an A and eagerness to learn more about it. She's not the easiest and attendance is nearly a must, which is hard for longer classes, but just take decent notes and you'll pass with ease.
I took her for two classes, one focused on renaissance art, the other modern art. She rox my socks! I'm at a private art school right now ... and I feel like I got a better art history education from Dana at OCC. The class is challenging in a good way. Dana is clear in lectures and expectations. She's a mastermind of art!
Art History is boring...especially in a 3 hour lecture hall. But Dana Doyle makes it very interesting. She made me laugh and learn a lot. She is very concerned with the wellbeing of her students and gives extracredit to make sure everyone passes. 3 tests, 2 museum visits, and lots of extra credit. I highly recommend Dana Doyle. Study a bit = "A"
So boring. She was also kind of rude. I never bought the book and got an A. Go to class, take notes, and do the study guide and you'll be fine. The museum visits were fun though. Take this class with someone else if it's require though.
a very interesting class if you are interested in contemporary art. learned a lot from her lectures. come to class for notes, do study guide and you're good to go.
Definitely take notes on her lectures because 99% of the things that she says are on the test, which are exceptionally easy if you do the study guides & study from them. I feel like she automatically gave everyone's museum essays & compare/contrast essay full credit if they were long enough. She also gives extra credit.
Really interesting class I love art so I enjoyed it. Take notes, do the assignments and you will get an A. She is a really nice teacher too.
She has a lot of interesting things to say about her subject, and seems to be truly in love with art history. She does tend to go off on a lot of tangents and often over-explains things. Overall, the class was somewhat interesting, but if you want a teacher who lets you out early "if there's time", keep looking, because there is never time.
Very boring class unless you have interest in the subject. Keeps you all the way til the end. Attendance is mandatory.
Enthusiastic about art & makes it interesting. I took Art101 w/her & she was great, Art102 is her specialty so she goes on too long sometimes. lot of reading but just keep up. do the whole study guide, write out the answers & make sure u read the book 4 the paintings mentioned & u'll get an A on test. u'll have 2 go 2 LA on ur own for museum visits
Learned a lot from her. She had a child mid-way through the semester and we got a crappy sub but the first half was good. You have to buy and read the book but her study guides are spot on for the test. You have to attend class because she explains each painting but she has a good teaching style. Totally recommend her
Asian Art was the first class I took at OCC and she was my first professor. She is very kind, very passionate about art history and is helpful! If you like Asian art, you will enjoy this class. It does require a lot of reading, class participation and memorizing for exams. But if you work hard, participate, ask questions, she will like you, trust me!
Professor Doyle was great. Before entering the class, I didn't care much for art. Now I have a new found passion for it! As long as you attend class and take good notes, you will perform well on the tests. I did not open the textbook and received an A. She also gives study guides before the exams.
She is great and one of the best teachers I've had at OCC. She really makes an effort to keep her students invovled, especially when it gets boring. She makes you stay the whole class but it goes by quickly and she gives you a break. She gives you a thorough study guide prior to all tests and there are a couple of museum visits.
She is a great teacher! Her classes were sometimes boring because I took three hrs long class. However, her tests were all from the study guides she provided. She is really helpful also! Strongly recommend to take her class(:
Took both contemporary and western art class, she's the best professor I've had so far. She's hilarious, and i've learned so much from her!
Dana Doyle is the best possible art teacher. There is so much she can do with the material and she definitely picks and chooses the most interesting things- and tries to get an entire lecture hall to feel smaller. It gets slow sometimes because it's a long lecture. Her tests are straight-forward and absolutely fair. She makes dorky jokes :).
I am NOT an Art person whatsoever, but professor Doyle made this class somewhat enjoyable. She encourages discussion which is a plus, but her tests are DIFFICULT. I barely got an A. To be fair, she does give a very through study guide with lots of questions. Every single test question has none of the above so it can be tricky.
easy class. go to class n study the exam guide (which she posts up) and its a definitely an A. anybody that gets less than A is a retard in this class lol. out of the total grade, I missed just one point. then again, I'm top student so ;p ahahah, she is real nice and friendly too
I took Doyle for 2 classes and she is one of my favorite teachers at OCC. She is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and she knows how to connect with students and make it interesting. Museum visit/essay required. All test questions are right there in the study guide! Highly recommend this prof. Class is hard if you aren't interested in art.
The MOST boring class I have ever taken. She rambles on and on. 2 required museum visits with 2 essays, one 5 page compare/contrast essay, plus the exams. Ridiculous amount of work for an art history class. I could barely stay awake. She takes attendance twice per class. If this is not your major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER.
Keeps you the entire class, until the last second, literally. Shes enthusiastic but sometimes comes off as rude. The other day, we had a 3 hour class & she 'forgot' to tell us what our essay assign. was, so she said whoever wants to know the key points, stay an extra 15 min-its optional. I couldnt stay I had another class. Doesnt seem fair to me...
Being in this class is incredibly miserable if this is not your major. Being someone who only took this class for GE credit and not for the love of art was a BIG mistake. Her powerpoint's are quite vague in my opinion and her study guides are MASSIVE. Basically impossible to finish. This is by far the worst class I've taken while at OCC.
I hated this class so much.2 museum visits w/ an essay from each place(each 1 hr away), another 5 pg essay, & 3 tests. Tests are 100 questions, timed,& on a slide show. Her slide shows have about 2 words-have to take notes for yourself. Study guides are ridiculous, took me 6 hours, AND she doesn't give study guide until 1 week before test. Miserable
This was by far the worst class I have taken during my 3 years at occ. I took this class for general ed because i thought it would be easy and fun, it was the worst mistake I've ever made. Didn't know one teacher could assign so much work for an art class. Sitting through class was painful
This is the worst class ive ever been in at occ by far, study guide is ridiculous and she is the most vague teacher ive ever had. supposedly we should be spending about 6 hours a week on art history work.... ive been dedicating as many as 4 per day.... any other teacher would probably suffice
Her study guide has a list of paintings, and specific questions on each painting. The problem is every single question is the same!!! They don't refer to the individual painting at all!!!!! How is this supposed to help me for the test??
Incredibly disorganized and mismanages time... midterm covered 12 paintings because she talks so much she doesnt get to everything, so she makes the next test cover 23 paintings after she already apologized for making the 1st test so large (19 paintings). Feels like punishment for her mistake.
she didnt get to 6 paintings for test #2, so she's adding them to the final???? awesome thanks teach.... ridiculous final, unorganized and unfair, mismanages time and is taking it out on us
Pros: Tests are easy and the study guides cover every question on the tests, Essays are graded easily, Professor Doyle is actually very nice. Cons: mandatory attendance, never lets out early, have to visit 2 museums by LA, lectures can drag on. Overall it is a great class.
PROS: test are easy, everything is in the book and study guide CONS: extremely boring (she could srsly talk forever and digresses), never lets out early, horrible time management, mandatory attendance, two mandatory museum visits,,,,TL;DR easy work/horrible, dreaded class experience
She really seems to care about what she's teaching. She obviously knows a lot about art. The tests are pretty simple if you prepare. The homework got to be a little ridiculous, but ended up not being necessary for the tests - used google instead. she does drone on, but you can get used to that.
She is very clear on what she expects. Just completed my second semester with her and I'm not an art major. 2 art museum visits required. Extra credit offered. 3 tests and 1 paper she guides you thru. I totally recommend her class. You get what you earn!
From day one you know what is expected of you to get an as in the class. It's totally obtainable. She knows what she is talking about, and lectures in a way to keep you interested. She gives a study guide (most answers in your notes, others in the book or online). anyone else notice she looks and sounds a bit like Colbie Smulders (HIMYM & Avengers) ... Just saying
Dana is a GREAT teacher. I took her for 101. Got a 97%. And now I am in her 102 class hoping to repeat the same grades. Such a doable class! Recipe for an A: Turn in every assignment on time, don't skip class(attendance counts for points), make flashcards for test and study them hard... Mix all that up and you've got yourself an A+!
If you are not an art major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She keeps you until the literal last 15 seconds. Takes attendance twice a class. Lectures are completely useless, unclear, and boring. The only reason I learned anything was bc I thoroughly read the textbook. 2 required field trips, each 1 hr away, 5 pg paper, plus 3 exams
If you're not into art, then it would be boring obviously. The class is super easy, just study the study guide and you'll pass with a B. an A requires a few notes in class lectures. Work on the study guide in class, she gives most of the answers in lectures. Put some effort and don't complain like little kids about boredom, and you'll pass easily.
Professor Doyle is great! Her passion for art really kept me interested throughout the semester. If you pay attention and take notes in class, you really do not need to bother with the weekly homework. I did not like contemporary art prior to this class, but now I really appreciate it. The required museum visits were fun as well.
This is the WORST class I have ever taken! Not only is it very uninteresting, class seems to drag on and it is torture. There is a study guide but the questions are unclear and doesnt answer all of them in class. She is very passionate but is a horrible lecturer. The only thing that helped me barely pass the class was the EC and the museum paper.
To update. There is no textbook anymore. Study guide is very unclear and requires you to solve it from internet websites. Some of which are interactive websites which makes tracking down the right answers -when they are clearly defined - frustrating. To add confusion each test also has a "none of the above" option.
Professor Dana Doyle has such a love for art that it makes the class so interesting. It is true the study guides are a tad unclear and if you don't like art of course you wont really enjoy the class but I myself love it. She is an inspiration and inspired me to minor in Art History.
Very boring. And her attitude is very abrasive. She's passionate about what she teaches but not who she teaches it to. Horrible class
Highly recommended for any Art History or Fine Art majors. Enjoyed the class. As long as you keep up with your studying, do the assignments, go to the required museum trips, take advantage of the extra credit, you will do fine. Choice of text book is bit dry though (sadly, it is necessary for this course).
Class is really slow pace. I study for her tests during lecture and am able to fully pay attention to lecture. She is very particular about her paper and extra credit.
Dana is a lovely person, but her lectures were draggy and unengaging. The highlight of this class was the class discussions, but there weren't many (this was in a lecture hall!). Tests are tricky. No textbook. Museum trips required. Be prepared to doodle!
She is very passionate about what she teaches. Lectures are long but interesting if you enjoy the subject. It is very important to not miss class or else you will miss a lot of information. I enjoyed her stories and I liked that she wanted us to enjoy them too. Definitely study for the tests but all you need to know is what is on the study guides
Consists of: easy quizzes, worksheet packets, a museum essay, only three tests, study guides provided with all answers given out each class lecture. No textbook & you never have to read the readings she assign (hope she doesn't read this). You still have to study though, but Dana makes art very refreshing and interesting! Love love love this class.
DD is an exceptional art history professor; she offers much new knowledge and, as well, enters into the heart and soul of the material. We learn about the art as well as the culture and the religion from which it emerges and this gives the subject so much more power. Lectures are exciting and the time flies by quickly, as does the semester.
Dana is very funny and so fun to listen too. Her class can get a little boring, making it hard to stay awake for over three hours in the dark. As long as you complete the study guide you will get an easy A, plus she also offers many opportunities for extra credit.
Dana is very understanding and helpful. It feels a kinda overwhelming the list of things she assigns students, but they are doable and reasonable. With extra credit I was able to get an A. I used flashcards to memorize the question answers, and although it was my first time taking a class like this, I found it possible to earn the grade I desired.
I love her,I can see her passion about art.
Great teacher! She has a passion for art and she really cares to hear the opinions of all her students. She gave me a better understanding and appreciation of contemporary/modern art. Would definitely take another art class if she were to be teaching it. Loved her class and personality!
Mrs. Doyle will change the way you look at life; and truly show you how to appreciate art. She is not a boring teacher; and she talks about interesting things while teaching you the material. Just show up to class, take the quiz, study the study guide, and do the few important assignments. She also remembers your name and talks to her students.
The class is boring and she is fairly strict on her cellphone policy. But she will give a study guide the class before the test and you basically need to identify an art piece and answer questions about the time it came from and the name. There is one essay that requires you to go to an art museum. The textbook is kind of a waste of money.
Dana is a sweet, down-to-earth lady. This class is seriously an easy A. It gets a little boring since it's a 3-hour class and the classroom is dark. She does have a strict phone policy though. She has a great sense of humor at times since she is a little silly lady. Tests are not hard. She wants everyone to pass. Overall, I highly recommend her!
Dana is awesome! I wish I had more classes with her. She gives you the opportunity to get at least 15 extra credit points on contemporary art. It is a great class but be ready to bring your coffee, as it is a 3 hour class in a nice dark room with a nice chair. Very straight forward on her expectations. She is also a pretty lady. Amazing class.
Dana is a wonderful person, this is a large lecture class so a lot of people fell asleep or just didn't pay attention, she is very enthusiastic about the material. only critic not fair to those who showup & stay awake and engage that other students who don't still get opp to re-do their work for full credit. subpar effort should bad grades.
She's awful. If you take her online class, be ready to study your butt off. She will give you stressful tests. Each test contains 100 questions and 100 minutes. You have to study 100+ slides or sometimes it's almost 200 slides. The tests are so stressful, focusing straight in 100mins make me crazy and headache.
Waste of time. Learned it all on my own. She was babysitting and online class. Save your money.
This is a first online class for her. Class assignment is not tough, but you have to use 1 or more hours for finishing every week's assignment and quiz. Her exam is not difficult if you prepare study guide. You can get A if you use a time for this class. We have museum visit assignment. Also, she has 15pts extra credit points.
One of the best art professors I've ever had.
Professor Doyle has a very clear grading criteria, there are no surprises! Watch the lectures and do the readings and you will pass. The study guides are crucial when taking the exams, the works of art that she puts on the study guides are on the exams! Participate because the discussions matter!!
She is an amazing professor! I highly recommend her class. I learned a lot. It is a fairly easy class, if you do all the work you will get an A. She responded to every email I sent super quickly.
amazing and engaging video lectures actually made by the professor, not just youtube video links and readings. study guides make it very clear what will be asked on the test, and exams are basically open note. Learned a lot. Not boring.
Seriously, the easiest online class if you need to clear your Arts/Hum GE! All you have are weekly videos with study guides that arent mandatory to turn in, but you can use them on the tests! At the end, you get to visit a museum and write an essay on it. Super easy A.
I took her class during the COVID-19, her class was already online. We were supposed to do a research paper at a museum but then they closed, she had us do the paper through an online version. She was caring during this situation that we were going through. She is that professor that would always check upon us, and she was still on top of grades.
If you want to learn more about art, she's your gal. There is a discussion and a review due every week. She also assigns a lots of essays. I spent many hours working on her essays and learned a lot. If you are willing to put in the work, take this class. She also gives one 5% extra credit which boosted my grade an entire grade level!
Prof. Doyle is my favorite instructor at OCC. I took the class online and her modules and lectures are amazing. If you complete the study packets you will get an A on every test. No surprise test questions. She gives amazing lectures-you will not be bored! One research paper per semester, maybe 3-4 pgs. on an artwork of your choice from a museum.
The weekly recorded lectures were great, informative and sometimes funny. Assignments were simple and her study guides set the student up for success. Pay attention and you'll get an A.
Discussions, quizzes, three tests, few assignments, and one paper but she is very generous with her grading criteria and has given multiple extensions without late deductions. Everything on the study guides are on the test and she strongly supports open note exams. Very kind and also replies to emails quickly.
Awesome professor. Very accommodating. Responds to emails pretty fast. 10/10 would take again.
Requires 2 books but talks about them so much in her lectures, you don't even need to buy them, I never opened them once. She has like 9 lectures a module but they're all like 6 minutes each so it's super easy and quick. There were 2 papers but gives step by step instructions on them so they're also easy and let us turn in late for same score.
Clear grading rubric, gives extra credit opportunities, and has VERY easy exams. She posts many study guide pages which seems daunting at first, until you realize each one is answering one question, and the total work amounts to MAYBE 2 hours a week. Whether you're an art major or anything else, this class is for you!
Weekly quizzes and discussions, all answers are straight from study guide pages which all take ~2 hours a week. Exams are extremely fair and easy, and there is a final paper that is also very simple and which you get a LOT of time to work on. Her format makes everything so simple and is a HUGE time saver if you're taking other heavier classes.
Super easy class as long as you get your work done on time. Doesn't take late work w/ no exceptions on small assignments/quizzes but big projects are accepted with a point deduction. Only thing is your grade on canvas does not reflect your current grade so be careful with that, she makes you calculate it with the rubric she has.
LOVE HER! I felt so spoiled having such a great prof. Major assignments get a 2-week late submission window for NO DEDUCTIONS! She will respond to canvas messages within 48 hours and is very helpful. I watched her lectures 2x speed and got 100% on her weekly quizzes, discussions can be annoying but not bad.Only a chronically lazy person would fail.
Such an amazing class. I really liked the lecture videos she made. There's only 2 papers to do that are fairly easy. She clearly cares about the subject she teaches and it shows in her comments on assignments and in her lectures. I would take this class if you need to fill your art/humanities requirements.
Best class ever! She's very generous providing accommodations to DSPS students. Literally just print out or fill in her study guide she posts each week and you're all set to ace her exams. Highly recommend her if you're taking this class as GE while working on harder classes.
I took this class a year ago, and it was frustrating. The course layout was unclear, and I often felt left on my own. When I asked about improving assignments or raising my grade, I got two-word replies if I'm lucky. It felt dismissive and unprofessional. Would not recommend.
DON'T TAKE HER. I mean that was ridiculous. I just finished my semester with her. She made me feel very alone; was EXTREMELY behind on grading and updating. She just expects you to know what to do. I learned nothing, engaged in nothing, and she expects you to have such an in depth understanding of art which most people don't have. WORST class ever.
she just seemed like one of those teachers that wants to show off her own knowledge rather than actually teach you. i have no background with art but I had to take this class, and you'd think she considered that.. glad it's over, but I'm walking away with absolutely no new knowledge. felt like a waste of time and money!
Grades very harshly, and you never know your current grade. The semester has been over and I still don't know my final grade. Worked really hard on my final essay that I had my sister (an art major) review before submitting and she gave me a D. I'm a good student, but I feel very defeated after that course. Just find another professor.
