Goes way to fast even if the WHOLE class doesn't understand.
His class is no joke.
I had this guy 3 years ago and I still think he is the worst out there

Terrible professor. I've never got a grade that bad in math before. The whole class has a C or D average and he really d.n. scale that much. The book is awful. Only ones who do well go to his office and suck up and still dn know what they're doing.
this guy is the worst teacher ever...he goes to fast...he doesnt help...and its impossible to get a good grade...do NOT take a class with him...
He doesn't go over any of the problems for homework and when you ask him a question about the homework he doesn't anwer you clearly.
tells what and why instead of just why. lazy people don't like him.
I hate math, but I got through it well. I think he taught well enough for those who were willing to put effort into it.
he is hard but if you pay attention you'll pass.
prof. fine is a terrible teacher, he goes throught the material so fast and doesn't explain things clearly. He starts out the class by saying most of you are goin to fail. now there's encouragment
An extremely difficult professor, Prof. Fine gives work and quizzes before you actually learn the material well. Most of your learning will be done outside of the classroom, alone or with a tutor. His homework exercises are difficult and his quizzes require memorizing information. If you put the effort in, a lot, you will do fine.
This was the WORST teacher I've EVER had! I am a hard worker; always did my homework, and went to tutoring two times a week. Nothing helped. He does not clearly explain how to do the work, and is unwilling to bend his teaching style to benefit the class, which had an average of a D+. More than half of us failed. AVOID THIS TEACHER!
Awful teacher, more than half the class was failing and all he had to say to us was that the withdrawl period would be ending soon.I went to him for help several times and his response was to 'read the book' and that was it. I put majority of my time into this class, went to tutoring and still ended up having to withdraw to aviod an F.
This teacher does not care about his students. His mostly comes to class with no book. He went to Europe and did not even tell his department head. He is horrible. Anyone who thinks he is a good teacher needs therapy.
Do not take Fine if you just want to fulfill a 100-level requirement; but if you really love mathematics, then he is definitely in the top three of professors I have had. He is hard and he goes fast, but he really knows his stuff and he shows a real love for the subject.
Terrible teacher. His primary goal is to flunk/weed out and then his secondary goal is to teach. I have always done well in math, but even with hard studying, doing all the homework, and going to tutors, I ended up withdrawing to avoid an F. He considers giving a C a huge deal. AVOID HIM!!!
Tough teacher, hard class to pass. I'm usually good at math but struggled with this class. He's a really nice guy and easy to approach with questions. Just be prepared to work hard if you take him.
This guy is on a power trip. He gets a kick out of flunking people. Avoid him!!!!
Nothing "fine" about him.
also mth 451 and mth 421 He is by no means an easy teacher and if you are just taking math for a gen ed get someone else. But if you like the subject and want to get a really good and comprehensive understanding he is a great teacher just don't be afraid to go to him during his office hours to get help.
He is a little eccentric, but he will amaze you with his intelegence. He told me that if he could do it all again he would become a geometric brakedancer. but its too late now on account of his faulty back. Thats when I said "don't ever stop being who you are". Then, he took me into his arms and said " you are magic man and I love you"I woke up thr
Extreamly difficult professor. Wants to teach theory, not applications. Always willing to explain, but doesnt help often. Scaled test about 7-12 pts and gave 50-60% "easy" questions on the test. 2/3 of class withdrew, no one remaining in the class failed. Well prepared = study entire book throughly. Come to class, he will remember whos there.

Proffessor Fine is a very rigid man.He spends most of the year building up hatered for his students.Once in his office I asked for help .I left that ****ing office with equations clawed into my face, neck and chest .He hates his students.he has to go to Cambodia for three months a year to torture monkys and diddle boys just to take out aggression
This class was a bad joke. I waived Calc. 1 because I've always done well in math and easily got a 5 on the AP test, and I felt absolutely lost 90% of the time in this class. Our class started as 20-25 kids, when I withdrew on the last day there were 5 left. If you spend your free time enjoying Calculus and not having a life, you might like him.
attend class then go to his office hours, he clears everything up in his office hours. dont expect to get a good grade if you blow off class...
(CALC 3)I would not recommend Professor Fine for a non math major. He is a mathematician above all else and teaches to mathematicians. More than half the class withdrew from class, and I managed to pull off a B-, he is generally a nice guy and wants to see everyone succeed, GO TO CLASS!!!!
worst teacher every, teaches like its harvard
worst teacher in the world, never take him
Was confused from the first day. Didn't understand a single topic he tried to teach. Only math majors could understand how he taught - do not take unless you are a math major. Did not correlate the HW to the text, the online program he told us we needed, or the notes in class. I withdrew even though I had a decent grade because it wouldn't stand.
He teaches and teaches and teaches...But he loves and he loves and he loves... He will figure it out some day. oh yes he will figure out the one thing he loves the most...when he figures it out we will all be doomed.he will be the one who laughs last. He will touch it..of yes he's gonna touch it.
horrible teacher. his test questions make no sense, he talks in circles. the whole class fails tests and he takes no blame. does not want to help you no matter how hard you try. the only way to get a good grade is if your a genious, avoid him!!
By far the worst teacher on the face of the planet. THE WORST. i really hope that this critique will steer you away from taking his class. At no point this year did he teach me anything about math. each class consisted of him saying how "stupid" my class was. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE is all i can say about him.
This is the worst teacher I think I've ever had in my life. He does about 1 problem in class, and can only do one because no one in the class understands how to do any of it. The problems in class aren't anything like the tests and somewhat similar to the homework, so you basically don't learn anything at all. WORST TEACHER EVER DONT TAKE HIM!!!
Fine is by far the worst professor ! Start of class 60 students now maybe 10. he doesnt teach he puts a problem on the board and asks you what to do.i dont know you tell me.he an ass.i went for help and it was like pulling teeth for him to get him to do problems for me he is awfull! if you ask questions he doesnt answer it.he beats around the bush
He teaches very technically and with lots of theorems. His tests are way harder than the stuff he gives you for hw. As long as you follow along in class, though, you should do well. He is more than willing to help you out and scales grades accordingingly. You just have to get past the first test and you should do fine.
He gives you like 40 calculus problems due in two days. He doesn't help you with any questions or concerns, he ignores my emails, his tests are nothing like what he teaches in class. My class started off with about 30 people and there was about 10 left in the end. Don't trust him.
Do not take class with Dana Fine. Just don't do it. He assumes you know much more than you learned in 101. He barely answers questions, and if he does, he acts superior. Constantly late and flustered. Entire class failed first test and he said "happens to me every year, you guys have to try harder"
STAY AWAY!!! He is by far the worst professor I have ever taken. I am an A/B student and he gave me a C I attended all the classes and did all the HW. Quizzes and Test are impossible he actually tells the class that he makes them impossible...WTF! If you want your GPA to hit rock bottom take him. If you as a question he ask "what do you think?"
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. You can tell he knows exactly what he is talking about but he has no clue how to be an effective teacher. Makes everything 10x confusing then it actually is. gives quizzes even tho he did not teach a section. Your better off using the book to teach yourself. In fact dont buy book you only need it for hw that he doesnt count.
If you do well in his class, you definitely know your stuff. He knows his calculus but doesnt really know how to teach it. When I had trouble he helped me and I understood afterwards. Doesn't use book but it would help if you did problems out of it yourself. group quizzes every friday, 4 tests, no final, hw is extra credit. I wouldnt take him again
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!I took AP calc in high school and got an A year-round but I managed to get a B- in his class. The class started with 35 and by the end only around 12 students remained. On the up-side, the homework is optional but his quizzes and tests are hard. His lectures are useless, I didn't go to half, I ended up reading the book.
AVOID THIS TEACHER. I studied the entire section of the book that he said his exam was gonna be on and none of it was on the exam. needles to say I failed and there is no way to redeem myself. He is boring and cannot teach to save his life he expects you to just know the math without being taught.
If you want fail, this class is for you. If you want a difficult class, this is for you. If you want to get 10 points off for not making your answer clear, this is for you. He's sucks at explaining and teaching. But other than 90% of the cons, he is nice.
Don't do it, it's a trap.. If you plan on passing this class you better be very very good at whatever he is "teaching" because he doesn't do a good job "teaching" at all. He is all over the place with his notes and doesn't use practical examples. Hopefully you never have to take him, but if you do, good luck. You'll need it.
sucks as a teacher but knows his stuff.
knows what he's taking about but doesn't teach at all
Can't believe the reviews on here! I was scared going in. He doesn't move on until you understand the material. Scaled every test we had. Quizzes suck, because you have to do them in groups, it lowered my grade. Don't buy the textbook, just the online access code, because the ebook is there if you need it (which you won't).
Brilliant individual, knows his stuff. He's a difficult professor, you'd have to study hard, do the homework because they help and go to his office hours otherwise it'll will be really difficult.
Good teacher, expect to put I'm a lot of time and effort into the class or you won't do well. He is very fair and grades based on effort and overall understanding of the subject. Those that are complaining just didn't put the effort in
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had during my two years in college. He does not know how to teach, he just speeds through the material during his lectures, and does not provide any help when a student doesn't get something. Every week or so you will get a test or a quiz, which will include stuff not covered in his notes or the textbook.
Unless you do not care about your GPA, do not take this dunce. He does not give out any homework, which would be cool if his test and quizzes didn't consist of material you will never see by reading the textbook or going to his lectures. Another words, good luck doing well if you do not devote your life to whatever he is "teaching".
He makes up his quizzes 5 minutes before class and pulls the questions out of thin air (that may or may not have anything to do with the current topic). His tests are tedious and dense. He does not give you the solutions or make any attempt to explain his tests/quizzes. He has this evil little elf grin that he will display at any misfortune.
One of the worst math teachers I've ever had in my entire life. I am now a senior in engineering... back when I took his precalc course he told me that I should drop my major... Please don't take this mans course... AT ALL COSTS
I'm good at math, I'm good at math! but not when I took it with this guy. He is absolutely terrible, he does not explain himself or teach at all! HIs test have nothing to do with the material and he actually told my class that we aren't going to make anything of ourselves in the future!
This teacher is awful! I am good at math and I need calculus for my major. I decided to take precalc as a review before taking calculus. He does not teach, just puts questions on the board and asks people to answer them (seriously that's all you do the entire class). He gives group quizzes that are totally irrelevant.
Do not take this mans class. Unbelievably unfair. He told us 50% of the kids in our class will fail Calc. Cannot teach. Just don't man.
Mr. Fine is probably one of the worst math professor I probably had in my whole educational life. He forces you to understand what he understands and I am obviously not on the same level of education in mathematics has he is. He doesn't see that you don't get it, and his explanations are very difficult to understand.
He's a terrible teacher, he doesnt teach during his class time and makes you watch lectures online that are sometimes longer than the class period. when you ask for help or a question he does not answer it, he just asks you a question in return and returns to what he is doing. I had to teach myself the course and was hard because of my class load.
Just an overall horrible teacher.
Dr. Fine is a brilliant individual, and knows his stuff extremely well. Within this brilliance lies his biggest downfall as a teacher for those who are bad at math or those who only believe they are good at math, he teaches as if his students understand things as easily as him. For me, this is how I prefer to learn, but this is not for everyone.
As someone who loves mathematics and has done well in all my math classes prior as an engineer, I can comfortably say this is the worst math professor I've ever had. DO not take, his tests are ridiculous, forgets to add graded points in the total score, has absolutely no understanding for his students and is overall very weird and a horrible person
Worst math teacher I've had. Doesn't lecture at all makes you learn everything on your own. Just goes over problems in class and doesn't help much when the answer is wrong. If I hadn't already taken the class in high school I would not be able to understand anything that is going on. Gives online lectures that don't work and homework is too easy.
Terrible professor. Expects students to learn ALL material OUTSIDE of class and covers review in classes. Tests are ridiculously difficult and are on material not covered in the review or curriculum. He assumes students understand him and speeds through material. Would not take another class with him again.
he gives a group quiz once a week that's not hard . he scales exams . hard but you just need to do the practice work.
All quizzes are "group quizzes" where he makes you count off randomly and puts you in random groups. Most likely you will do all your groups work and they will do credit for it. All homework AND lectures are online. He does not teach. Smart guy knows his math stuff but is mad at teaching it.
Terrible Class had to withdraw because it was obvious I wouldn't pass. Doesn't really teach more or less goes over the homework questions that no one can figure out, group quizzes were only given 15 minutes but they were more like an hour worth of work. Most of everyone I talked to was also expecting to fail. Would NOT take again.
Where do I begin with my "Fine" friend? On the contrary, this man is by no means even close to the word "Fine." Prepare for his class, oh yes prepare.... To want to avoid the school for the sake of your sanity. This man is a ring leader in a math circus of misery, set on starving his students of any good grades to promote your performance. Just NO
If you wanna know how you can discover new math, take seriously what this guy has to say. Not for faint-hearted; don't do math if you are that faint-hearted, take music. He could've made it more friendly picture of math like V I Arnold does.
The best math professor at Umassd. If you are serious about learning higher math, this man will whip you into shape. It won't be easy!
In class, you do problems he puts on the board and he calls names off randomly. You do all of your learning at home watching videos he made as lectures. Homework is on Pearson, the worst thing ever invented for students. As long as you give it effort and study for the tests it's not that bad. He bumped up my last test grade to give me Dean's List!
PLEASEEE AVOID MTH148 UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY GOOD AT ALGEBRA. MY CLASS SIZE WENT FROM 30 THE FIRST DAY TO LIKE 15 AFTER 3 WEEKS. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD TO WITHDRAW. HE IS A NICE PERSON BUT THE WAY HE TEACHES IS TERRIBLE.
THIS CLASS WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME. I AM USUALLY GOOD AT MATH BUT I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING HE TALKED ABOUT IN CLASS. NONE OF THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE LECTURES HE GAVE. UNLESS YOU'RE REQUIRED TO TAKE MTH 148, I WOULD AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. GOOD LUCK
To myself, I am very good at math. That class made me not being able to learn anything from him because the professor does not know how to teach that class. The homework assignments had nothing relevant to the textbooks/lectures I have read. He does scale exams, though. This professor is not a recommendation if you are a math major like I am.
Despite taking an on-campus course, all was taught online using a $200 online software. My grade was brought down because of group quizzes, GROUP QUIZZES, many students would argue and change answers after going to turn in the quiz.
Best math professor I have had so far at UMass Dartmouth! Professor Fine moves through the material at an appropriate pace, gives fair and balanced exams, and lectures and answers questions in a clear, organized manner. If you are a decently good student, I would definitely recommend Professor Fine for Discrete Math.
This professor sucks, i did bad on the first exam and good on the second and he accused me of cheating. He likes to try to fail students and see them struggle. He will not do review sessions or give you review guides. Avoid this professor at all costs even if that means dropping out of school. He sucks.
Forced us to have our cameras on and recorded lectures but never posted them class was mandatory. The only good thing he has ever done was not make us use honorlock.
Dana Fine is very good for a remote teaching environment. He gives a reasonable amount of homework, he works on participation, which most professors don't do, and his exams are fairly balanced. As someone who is inconsistent and gets bad grades left and right, I am able to consistently get good grades. I recommend taking him for discrete math.
Professor Fine is alright I guess as far as teachers go. His big problem is that he posted all of the lectures online and then did review in class. The way I got through the class was by teaching myself how to do the work from the homework as I did the homework. I might as well have bought the textbook and done self study.
After having him for MTH181 and barely scraping by, I have no intention of taking another course of his. The exams are HARD. The review doesn't help. Instead of seeing if you've grasped the concepts/techniques and know how to use them, he quite literally makes 80% of the exam a test of whether you remember every word of his dull lectures. AVOID.
The professor expects you to teach yourself the topic and then publicly embarrasses you if you don't understand. We use our hour and 15 minutes of class time to do about 10 example problems that are not what is on the test. The homework is 70+ questions long. The book only teaches you the concepts and not how to apply it.
This class is crazy hard. One of the things I hated about this class was that there were no notes you basically had to teach yourself the whole semester all the notes were example problems that he makes students do in class by spinning a wheel on his phone and choosing a random kid and if you don't know the answer you automatically get embarrassed.
Professor Fine is my worst professor I've had at UMD so far. The tests looked nothing like the notes and the textbook so I was thrown off guard every time. His class is my only non-A grade. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!
If you are truly an enlightened student who doesn't care about your grade and just wants to learn as much as possible, he's your man. Otherwise, avoid.
Fine is an awful professor! I have had him for two classes and regret both (Pre Calc and Intro to Data Science). He never follows the textbook, gives you tests and quizzes on topics that were never covered, and gives you homework on subjects that won't be covered until the upcoming weeks. Avoid him at all costs if you value your time and grade!
Never had this bad of an experience with a professor before. Very passive aggressive and unwilling to help both in and out of the class. Don't waste you energy and time on this professor. Tried teaching myself and going to tutoring but wasn't successful. Hope Dana finds purpose in his work in the future and doesn't just show up for a paycheck.
Go to EVERY lecture and when he calls your name to answer a question it is OKAY to say that you do not know or don't understand (don't sit there silently awkwardly because he will NOT move on to the next person). Also, turn on email notifications for Cengage so you don't miss any assignments. If your class has a PAL tutor meet with them, it helps.
I took DSC 101 with him, avoid at all costs. He rarely knew what he was doing, admitting he relearned it the night before. For one of the homework assignments I asked for help and he said he had no idea and to ask one of the other students. Midterm did not relate to in-class work in any way. Stay away
he's fine... HOW DID NOBODY MAKE THAT JOKE! but seriously, unlike most people, i found him to be a great professor who always kept a simile on his face even when nobody was answering his questions or when grades were lower that expected. many people acted like he was unfair but if you pay attention, do work on time, you're all set. pretty standard.
The professor rambles and doesn't know how to use the online side of his course, which is crucial. If the school requires online resources, it should ensure teachers are properly trained. Putting topics on exams we have not covered is not a quirky thing to laugh about when discussing your disappointment in your grades. Avoid this Professor.
So. Much. Work. But the professor was great, and I was super interested in the topic of the course. He uses no slides / online tools at all - so that can be a bit frustrating and makes attendance very important.
Terrible professor. Listen to the reviews because most of them are accurate and aren't exaggerating. Consider taking any other professor available over this professor.
