Dr. Dana is a great lady and very nice. Unfortunately, sometimes in class she shows a huge bias towards mens opinions and tends to favor womens opinions much more. I have heard of other students men and women complaining of this exact problem. She is a great teacher, fun in class, and sympathetic, but the bias towards men is a big drawback...
As a 3 unit, intro course this class demaned more of my time than some of my undergrad classes. Most of the work seemed useless. Dana seemed as if she was trying to prove something with the amount of work she required. I was anything but impressed!
I regret to report Dana was a worthless teacher & lacking knowledge. Her teaching methods consisted of demanding us students to tell her what we wanted to do with the class time. When no one said anything, she said "okay lets all go home then." and so we DID...She assigns MAD BUSY WORK from biased and useless textbooks that are in fact articles.
I didnt like her class at all. She shouldnt be head of the sociology department. She was not a good source of information.
In my opinion Dr. Dana is a very competent and talented professor. She prepares her students for graduate level courses so there is a lot of reading and writing. She also encourages a egalitarian power structure in her classes so you have choice in how you want to participate in her classes. I like that but I guess some people don't.
Dr.Dana is an excellent teacher who's committed to her students' growth. She was extremely helpful and friendly when I used her office hours. She mostly uses discussion format and draws out quiet students. Her class isn't easy but prepares you for upper division classes. It was life transforming for me. She helped me find my voice and gain confidence.
I have taken Intro, Social Problems, and Human Sexuality with Dr. Dana, and she is amazing. High energy, loves to teach, and really makes the students apply the concepts to their own lives. She does demand a lot of reading, but it is so worth it. I have learned so much from these courses!
Dosen't prepare you well for the tests & does not treat you with respect unless you are accomplished. She treats her superiors GREAT but not her students. BUT discussions and material is interesting. The teacher messed up a classmates final grade from a 87% to 54% and had to submit a change of grade form after she complained and the semester ended.
First of all - This class is difficult. If you're looking for an easy A, don't bother. That said, this was one of the most rewarding classroom experiences I've had here at CR. There was a lot of work, but it only gave me a better understanding of the course material. I learned a ton, and truly enjoyed the class. I'd definitely recommend this class.
I wasnt sure how I was gonna like this class. It was A LOT OF WORK but extremely rewarding. If you wanna feel like you actually did college level work take her class.
This class was the most work I have ever put out for a class. Although it is only 3 units it should be about 5 based on the amount of time and energy that goes into it. Lectures are all over the place so reading is essential and takes a very large portion of the week. There is a huge binder activity which if you don't do you will fail.
Do NOT take this class unless you are majoring in sociology. If there is a different class you can take, I suggest that you do so. This one is not worth the effort. Period.
She shouldn't be teaching this class. She should be doing upper-division soc. courses for majors. The reading and workload are unrealistic for any full-time students. Tests are painfully long and require an absurd amount of written explanation. Her 17-26 pg reading response paper sucks all joy and meaning out of the book. So much potential...:-(
This class was a ridiculous amount of work. I do not recommend this class at all. I thought that the work load was on over kill for only 3 units, and I didn't learn much at all.
Do not take this class! It is extremely hard and the teacher is not helpful if you ask her questions, she tends to bark at you. You have to write a 17 page response paper on a book that sucks. Save yourself and your money!
Great teacher, but you feel at times that she seems a little robotic, and she is really strict and difficult.
Many of these reviews seem to be written by students who expected an easy class with little homework. That is not the case with Dana (who does NOT insist on being called Dr). She is a dynamic lecturer; classes were never boring. She enjoys having students visit during office hours and is VERY encouraging. I highly recommend this class.
It's hard work being in her class, but if you work hard for her she will work hard for you. Very unbiased lectures, very fair grader, and stays on top of the stuff she assigns. Don't be afraid to meet in her office hours, she makes you comfortable, and will help you with specific research. Lectures well formatted, great speaker. LOVES HER JOB!
Completely pretentious and doesn't allow feedback. Can't operate the basic computer program she plays videos with. Wear your glasses and bring earplugs because she virtually shouts.
class is well taught and fairly unbiased. Dana has a harsh demeanor in class, but is genial in office hours. Requirements for student binders is overly rigid. The required response paper is on a friends book. I found this to be a conflict of interest for the class. The book is also weakly written and not particularly relevant to the class.
I have taken hard classes before and welcome a challenge but her teaching style is incredibly ineffective and honestly I have never come across a more pretensions teacher in my college career. Not ALL of your students are lazy or want an easy A when they are trying to relay that you are assigning far to much busy work.
Dana is an excellent professor, her method is to challenge people to be involved in group processes, to be self-directed, and to de-normalize the ways we're used to communicating. As a critical thinker and aspiring feminist I have to say that yes, she is super challenging, but this is the most you'll get out of your money at CR.
While you can tell she is passionate about what she is teaching the work load she assigns is unreal, at least for a lower level class She doesn't belong at the community college level. I am a mom trying to get through school and get a good job to feed my kid and send them to college and she made passing her class ridiculously hard the average joe!
Dana has been the most effective and passionate teacher I have had in my college learning experience, both at CR and HSU. She challenges her students to think critically and is immensely supportive. The workload is manageable and her teaching style is quite accessible (and I'm a high school dropout). She's a very fair grader, just show some effort.
This class has a great teacher. She brings a lot of energy that a first i was a little intimidated by because i wasn't expecting it. She keeps it real. There is a lot of homework but if you are bad at tests (like myself) you can do poorly on them but still get a good grade. She was very helpful with the assignments. well worth the work and the time
Difficult workload, long papers. Sometimes can be rude when asking clarification questions. Very passionate though, with well formed lectures. I think her huge book-response paper for Human Sexuality was a massive challenge, but hecka rewarding.
The workload for this class is RIDICULOUS! The tests are very difficult as well. Long reading assignments every week and several writing assignments every week as well. This class is far too time consuming, I spend more time on it than all my other classes combined and I would not take another class from Dana. She is enthusiastic just far too hard
Taking a class from Dana was a terrible mistake. She does a good job at lecturing but is very unclear of her expectations for exams and assignments and assigns an outrageous workload that takes up all my free time. This is an intro class, but Dana seems to teach like we are upper division or PhD students. I would advise NOT taking her classes
Interesting topics and very knowledgeable professor. Use the office hours if you are struggling, Dana is extremely supportive.
Wasnt very stoked with the Soc. 3 class i took w/Dana. As others have mentioned, shes very pretentious and the work load is big to put it mildly. Her organization through MyCR is even more ridiculous than the workload. The expectations from her are huge and shes the least organized teacher ive had. Doesnt quite compute. I will NOT miss her class
I thought she was a very nice teacher. While her workload could have be conceived as large only if you did everything last minutes. I learned a lot from her class. Good teacher.
Dana Maher is an awesome teacher! She has a great personality and is funny and energetic. She challenges and gives a ton of work but I find the homework fun and easy to connect with. Take her class but expect hard work.
love her! she is a great teacher, she does have a heavy work load but it is rather easy if you just do it. The readings were captivating and easy to relate too.
Not very helpful. This class took up more time with all of the homework than all of my other 4 classes together. If you have a different opinion than her, you are wrong. Sociology is interesting and I love learning about it but it's hard to enjoy it when she's so tough.
She's got a ton of energy and will really stress the important things you have to learn. Homework and projects are challenging but to a positive extent. Do all of her readings and don't procrastinate and you will do fine. Her tests tend to cover every single thing she has you read.
I took Sociology 1 with Doctor Dana Maher. She is a very good teacher. She seems really interested in the subject. The class is not easy though. You have to come to class, take notes, do the homework, and study for the exams to pass the class.
Tons of busy-work or assignments completely unrelated to the test. She doesn't really like to explain some of the later assignments and just tells you to "see what other people are doing". Tests are pretty straightforward and are on what has been covered in class.
I took Dana my first semester in college, she is my all time favorite teacher EVER. She is passionate and really cares about her students. I didn't miss one of her classes, because if you miss a class it's like missing the rapture. Just do the reading and turn in your homework and you will pass. LOTS OF PROJECTS, but you learn a TON. I loved it.
She will get inside your brain, in the best way. :) The busy work is a bit much. Her lectures are awesome, she always has a great story to drive home the theories and perspectives associated with the class. If youre not going to become a sociologist and just want an easy A (lets be honest an easy C-) then skip this professor.
Dr. Dana started the semester with saying that if we can do well in her class, we can do well in any college/university course. Challenging and lots of work, but the payoff was an incredible education. Some say she should be teaching at university level; I say thanks for not dumbing-down because we are in a community college. Gave me pride.
Haven't finished the class yet but I already love it. I'm from out of state and have attended two other community colleges and one university, and dana is doing a splendid job. You will have to read, a lot, and yes there are exams and awesome lectures. It's academics, it's school, get over it. She brings home that social science, is science.
This class was interesting because the subject itself is relatively easy, but there is an overwhelming amount of work and it will quickly become your most time-consuming class. You will be reading and note-taking A LOT. Dana is a good teacher with fun lectures but the tests were a bit scattered, especially the final.
Teaches intro classes like upper-division classes. Lots of reading, and she loves having you make elementary school collages and such nonsense. Hope you like hearing about roller derby! SJWs will love her, though.
Dr. Dana is going to load you up with a ton of reading and explorative exercises. I did more work in her class than I did in CHEM 1A and MATH 30 - combined, and all for a 3 credit, GE course. While human sexuality is important to discuss, if you aren't a Gender Studies major, aspiring SJW, or staunch postmodernist, I'd steer well clear.
Shes by far the worst professor Ive ever had. Assigns a lot of reading and homework and expects you to figure out what she wants you to do from her very vague assignment instructions.
Horrible, she is rude to everyone doesn't respect anyone, worst of all she swears all the time because she is insecure. Avoid at all costs....
She is really nice, but so distractible that she cant seem to finish an actual senses. She switches subjects mid-sentence and talks so incredibly fast that most the time you are wondering what the heck is happening.
Dr. Dana definitely teaches her class with high expectations (lots of reading and note taking) but it seems to be done with the expectation of preparing students to transfer to a 4 year. She is funny and has a ton of stories to help get the content across to students. You will need to be on top of it but it is so worth it!
Dr. Dana has been extremely inspirational as a professor. She has opened up new pathways for me to explore my career choice. Dana is a relatable teacher who reachers her audience and hold their attention. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Dana is a heavy work load teacher, but she makes sure you understand that at the beginning of class.
Dana has really high expectations, and she provides a lot of guidance and support to help you push yourself. She creates an inclusive and anti-oppressive space that fosters a healthy learning environment. Dana has a lot of great ideas about how to support student success beyond the classroom. Come to class prepared for intellectual heavy lifting.
Great Teacher
Awful. A huge amount of reading and time consuming annoying assignments where she doesnt give any clear direction where youre supposed to do vague arts and crafts type projects and journal. She is an empowered feminist hippy type, but the annoying kind. She swears all the time and yells as she lectures. I had a headache the end of every class.
Brings her personal political beliefs into the classroom. The entire class is based around her incredibly liberal feminist socialist type beliefs. Assigns way too much reading and homework, to where students just give up because shes asking too much. Ridiculous busy work elementary school type craft projects like collages and journals
Dr. Dana is an amazing professor. She is known for having a heavy reading and work load, but she makes sure to warn students on the first week of class. She really cares for her students and will do anything to help their learning along the way. She's always available in office hours and via email. All you gotta do is ask for help. Great class!
Dr. Dana is amazing! She is hard, don't get me wrong. If you can get an A in her class you are ready for the big leagues.
Awful. She made a hilarious comment about talking to another professor about how her students were coming to her crying because the class was too hard, and the other prof not knowing what she was talking about because that had never happened to him. She surmised that it was because she was a woman that these students were crying to her. Says it all
Skip her if you want an easy class. I had to work harder than in any class I've taken but I'm now prepared to succeed in hard classes after her. Her assignments are involved and take time. The descriptions are detailed, she sticks close to them in her grading, reading load is real & she doesn't care "what" you think, so long as it's critical think.
the worst sociology professor I have ever had. If this was my first sociology class it wouldnt be my major. The whole class is just reading. 12 hours of work on an assignment or 1 hour and youll still get a C. Her feedback isnt helpful. The actual worst class I have ever taken even though I love the subject the professor ruined it.
If you're a sociology major and you have a flexible work schedule, Dana's classes just might be for you. If you're only taking sociology for general education requirements and/or you have a super busy work schedule, avoid.
No one should take this class ever. She not only sucks at organising essays and tests, but she sucks even more on actually helping students. I would not suggest taking her ever. Tbh she shouldnt even be a teacher teaching this subject. This semester she didnt do anything to help me and made half of her students fail.
Doesn't care that you may have other classes as well. A nice woman, but inconsiderate of people's work loads. I need to work full time to pay rent, she doesn't seem to realize that people have other priorities as well.
Nightmare. She's the worst teacher I've ever had. I have never cried because of a class before and it became a regular thing. She kills any enjoyment of the subject. Her grading rubric is NOT what she actually uses & she knocks points for things she didn't say were required. Just when you think you're failing, she stacks extra credit at the end.
Dr. Maher is definitely a hard teacher which these other comments say, but it really does prepare you for harder work! I at least feel comfortable transferring now because I will be able to actually handle a harder workload! The reading is no joke but it is interesting and Dr. Maher will definitely help you if you reach out!
beware of critical grading on unclear assignments.
As folks have already stated her classes are HARD but it makes it so worth it when you get a decent grade! Of course no classes have been easy this past year but I thoroughly enjoyed this class and feel more prepared now going back to in person classes. The subject matter is also really interesting and would take again if I wasn't transferring!
I was a little bit nervous to take this class, I've read on here that Dana is a bit harder on you. However, I felt like that couldn't be further from the truth. You get out of this class what you put into it. Participate in discussions. You need to read a little bit, yeah, but what do you really expect? To get an A for existing? Just do the work.
I was worried for this class but found that the format of this class helped me to understand sociology. there is no traditional testing but there are quizzes every week. Keep up on the routine assignments and turn them in for extra credit. I prefer this format over memory testing in a stressful setting.
Dana Maher was a beyond hard. She didn't give clear instructions on assignments or lectures. She spoke very fast and rambled all over the place. You will teach yourself. When asked for help, the feedback was vague. I won't recommend her to anyone, nor ever take her classes again. The structure leads to confusion more than anything else.
Would not recommend this professor for an intro to sociology class. Barely learned anything about sociology from her because the whole time she makes you focus on grading your own assignments, which are difficult to do because she gives unclear instructions. When students would ask questions she would give vague answers back that helped no one.
If you are looking to take a "busy work" class, this ones for you! Spent the 1st 3 months on a student success "project", that was graded based off her own viewpoints, not the actual instructions or syllabus. The student below who tells the story of her story about making students cry characterized this professor perfectly. Made me chuckle.
Discussions have no point in them and students are not allowed to sound similar to other students even though everyone reads the same book and has to state their opinions about the same questions.
I'm someone who has often struggled through school but Dana was a fantastic professor who was continuously supportive in her class. While it's tough course content and she expects you to follow through with the work she's understanding so long as you communicate your needs. I would happily take more classes from her in the future.
She was very fair. I forgot to print out copies of an assignment she help me out. Always let me stop and talk to her. She real knows the subject matter well. I felt like a learned a lot from her. I am very happy I had her as a teacher.
Dr. Maher is great, however I think I would have appreciated her more through an in person setting. It was hard to get through modules and her lectures were just difficult for at least myself to understand at some times. However, with that being said she still answered questions and responded to me quickly when needed. Lots of work and reading fyi.
Not a bad teacher at all, big fan of structured classes but the workload is quite a bit. If you have free time and love challenging classes, this is for you. The workload is heavy and takes up my time studying more than my other classes do. Work consists of reading chapters weekly and note-taking. Very direct but as others said, not an easy class.
I have a masters, I know academics. I know social justice. She is disorganized, doesn't give you grades or let you see her style until it's too late to drop. If you have a disability (mine is ADHD) this class maybe too much for you due to her "style". This class props up academic injustice and systemic violence through its format and expectations.
Queer studies was such a lovely class and I hope it will be listed again in the future. Each week we had a different queer community member come to share their unique perspectives. The textbook was easily accessible and had a lot of great resources. This course was helpful as a study skills class, with engaging content and an encouraging professor.
I would not recommend this professor. Patronizing, inflexible, and insensitive to student needs. Super confusing and disorganized Canvas set-up and constantly unclear instructions. Lots of "busy-work" and convoluted, vague assignments.
Disorganized with Canvas system. Lectures were inconsistent w/ quizzes & assignments. They did not have an understanding of newer DEI concepts. The way they spoke to students did not align with the concepts/ideas on how to build understanding of individuals and cultures described in the text book i.e. they did not "practice what they preached."
Super unprofessional. If you catch her outside of class she's very off, and very unwilling to talk to people
This professor was disorganized and unhelpful if you had a question. There were three main projects and it was confusing the way she named them on Canvas. I was miserable in this class and would not take it again.
I had to drop this class because Dr. Maher was going to grade her students based on their note taking. She made unclear guidelines on how we had to take OUR OWN NOTES of the text, and when asked "what if your note taking style doesnt work for us?" she gave a vague answer stating her way is better. Note taking was going to be 40% of our final grade.
This professor was genuinely one of my least favorites ever. She didn't allow us to go to the bathroom during presentations and had extremely confusing assignment directions/Canvas set-up. She made many students cry and was not actually empathetic, despite basing her class around making connections. Avoid this professor if at all possible.
You can clearly see that Professor Maher loves what she does, but personally I would not take any of her classes again. The workload for one class is very heavy especially when having other classes too. We had 4 different books within one semester and 1–2 hour long lectures. If you are taking other classes + work, I would 100% not recommend.
