ok english teacher. not the greatest.
SHE IS OK.HER CLASSES ARE BASICALLY DISCUSSIONS. SHE DOENS'T HAVE THE BEST TASTE IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT BOOKS FOR THIS CLASS. HER ENGLISH 101 CLASS IS A COMBINATION OF SPEECH, POLITICAL SCIENCE, CALIFORNIA HISTORY, AND ENGLISH.
she is ok. hard grader
Bad teacher. Did not learn anything about English. But I do know about the suburbs! I guess that doesnt count when i transfer, huh? do not take this teacher she sucks
Great teacher, learned alot. Very nice and easy to understand. wassup Dana :)~
Not bad, easy grader but a little too boring sometimes in the class, if you don't show up for 2 weeks u wont miss anything because she talks about what her students wanna talk about....just worry about essays
She will not teach you the basics of English. The whole point of her class is to learn how to develop your ideas in order to write a well thought through paper, which will be a skill you will need for upper division classes. I found the class very interesting.
The easiest class i've taken i didn't read one book in her class and still got a B
WORST teacher i've ever had. bad selection of books.. i didn't learn ONE thing in her class. very boring and not helpful at all. she expects you to already know things yet its ENGLISH 101.. she doesn't teach you the basics of anything. a complete waste
she doesnt develope ur english. for me, she had a bad selection of books( very mysterious). she expects u to interpret the books by ur own. she wouldnt help u. she always comes late to class (10 minutes late). a good lookin lady though.
If you want to be able to write concise research papers Dana will help you... You have to know the basics for reading and writing though, and hand in assignments on time... I really enjoyed being in Ms. Marterella's class. I got a "B" for the semester...
i think she sucks at teaching. didnt learn too much. she expects her students to know the material that she has never ever even discussed. she can be very redundant too. she tries to make the class interesting though but she still havent had any success in that. her class is very boring. half my class is asleep. i have had better teachers.
i took this class @ wlac. 2nd part to 101. in 101 you shud already know how the basis from the prior class or if u tested in you shud still have a clue. her books may be "mysterious" but the idea is 2 provide critical thinking behind it and make reasonable arguments w/ clear support. I did that and got and "A" so can U! Shes G8! learned alot!
If you do all the work and reading in her class you will do well. She doesn't give a lot of busy work, but expects you to keep up with your reading and turn in the essays on time. She's friendly too.
Very engaging professor. She really got me to stretch my mind a bit. I never would have chosen to read the book she assigne, but I liked them. Class was never boring. Usually it was discussion.
I'm taking her right now and I'm kinda scared because she's not very clear about what she's expecting me to do.
worst teacher ever! soooo boring..and she expects you to know your stuff when she never even discussed it. she's always late anyway so thats always a good thing! watch put for her..she isn't so bad but she's not good either.
I LOVE THIS TEACHER!! Dana is very helpful and considerite. Engage yourself in class conversations (and do the work/reading) and you'll do fine. I highly reccomend her.
She's very helpful but you need to approach her and show up to her office hours... She's not easy if you don't do your work, but other than that you actually learn something in the class.
she is nice, but if you want to pass her class be ready to read at least 5 books.
DO NOT TAKE this class. She doesn't know how to teach.
Her books sucked. I only read the first chapter in all of them and still got B's on the essays. Just listen to discussions in class. I ended up with a C in the class because I got 1 C on an essay. Go to the workshops early (if she assigns it) so you wont be SOL at the end of the semester.
Marterella's strength as a professor is in the way she gives students something to really consider by choosing unconventional literature. If you want to learn how to be analytical (college level) and appreciate an engaging instructor, she is highly recommended!
She is very easy and helpfull. you have to read 7 books but they are all interesting. i think that that's the best english teacher i've ever had.
She is a fair grader, clear to what she wants to read in your paper. She really does appreciate your work if you exert every effort and move on to improve. I took her during winter, she gave 4/5 books, and none of them will make sense at first, but as you read, you'll find it engaging. Engage in class discussions and you will do fine.
The biggest cretin to obtain a degree. She is living proof as to why education no longer pays off to ****foot credentials.
i dont know why this girl is still teaching..she does try...well, not really. she is a smart girl but she needs to realize that SHE IS A TEACHER AND HER JOB IS TO TEACH no matter how simple or basic the subject matter is. without the basics, how are we suppose to learn a much more complicated material?! well, she's kinda cute though too.
Class discussions can be interesting and boring at times, depends on your classmates...You have to read 5 books which 2 out of 3 were great! Basically read the books, participate in class...Final exam wasn't difficult, powerpoint presentation...You learn if you're willing to learn, she's pretty good instructor, she's real and open-minded...
Great Prof. She assignes a lot of books to read, but if you buy that large book she askes you to buy , youll be fine. NJust one big Research Essay, not to bad. Lots of writing but she does help you A LOT if you need it and ask for it. IF you pay attention and ask her for help youll pass with an A.
This teacher doesn't know how to teach. She doesn't care if students are learning or not. It was once a week class and she had cancelled three of them, the other couple of classes were just boring movies. She didn't teach ANYTHING at all but graded the papers very strictly. I highly recommend NOT to take her. She SUCKS big time...
Marterella is a great teacher.. yeah there are a lot of books to read in the class, but there all really godo books.. if you read and try your best, youll do well.. its one of those classes where you finish n realize at the end that it wasnt a waste of a course n you actually learned a lot.
Not kidding when previous comments indicate a lot of reading material (about 100 pages/wk) with analytical essay type exams. Put extra effort and felt I did well, but got a C+ for one exam. Group presentation for the final- easiest part of the course (just had to dedicate time to project). Felt class was a bit too liberal discussing social issues.
very good teacher! I learned a lot in her class. Loved reading all the books and having discshn in class. I did complain abt the reading but when it was over, I did look back and smiled....I was happy that I read a lot and learned a lot....spcly learned how to actully put my brain to work and do some critical thinking
she was an amazing teacher. she really gets you to think critically and see things outside of the box. i LOVED the class.
Lots of reading! Grading on essays seem random. However she is enthusiastic in class. I think likes a lot of interaction during class meetings.
great teacher, very nice, very cute :)
If you don’t like readying a lot then this is not the class for you, she makes you read boring books that have 130 to 300 pages which after you finish you have to do analytical essays for homework or exams. I agree with the previous comments that the class was too liberal discussing the issues of the books not to mention that a lot of my class-mate
Very intelligent professor, some of the material is crap and be prepared for at least 5 books to read (all Femenist stuff)other than that she was a good experience. And shes cute.
Finally, a college professor who doesn't treat the students as if they're still in high school. The reading and writing assignments are challenging, but she is very accessible for assistance and clarification. Her main objective is to enhance critical thinking skills, this real world objective can be threatening to close-minded students.
She is hard!!!!!! And she gives a lot of books to read that has nothing to do with the class. Don't take her class on summers or winters. Maybe she is good on falls and springs. She doesn't explain anything, even the grammer, she just gives you the book to read in two days. If you want to keep your A, then I wouldn't recomend her.
She rarely is in class & always seems to be canceling them for the stupidest reasons. She gives you books that definitely have a feminist meaning to them, as well as racial meanings. She doesn't always give clear instructions, & once expected people to know to have their mid term ready when she canceled class 3 days in a row prior to that. BAD!
she's a great teacher! the work isn't a burden and she really tries to work with you when you need help. if you can't make a deadline she's very understanding and tries to make a compromise to suit the both of you. i loved her class and i would definitely recommend her to anyone who wants a GOOD teacher that's smart and doesn't treat you like a kid
Lots of books by california authors, kind of annoying! Lots of reading! As a teacher pretty cool laid back, and nice!
I took her a while ago -- just never got around to rating her. Anyways, she's a great teacher. Understands how to teach the material and is very helpful. Just do all the readings and listen to her lectures on essay-writing. If you actually care and try, you will pass this class with an easy A.
Expect to read a lot of feminist books. She made us write 2 in-class essays, 1 take-home longer essay, and the research paper. She loves and encourages class participation and debate. If you read the assigned books and know how to analyze, you'll do fine.
I loved her but there was a whole bunch of reading. I was also in summer so it might have been a little bit easier. Take Summer! Her finals are in class essays.
Personally English has never been my thing..I think that this is an amazing teacher who made me like reading and writing, her books are interesting and challenge to see more than just letters on the page! You do need to read the books duh!! we are in college here.
This teacher knows everything about English and how to teach it. Her books are all interesting to read(no textbooks). After taking her class, you'll be a pro in writing essays. In class debates a lot fun. Hot teacher!!!
Did not learn anything in this class. She makes you read tons of books and then makes you write about them. Does not focus on writing, so you are on your own on the essays, she doesn't allow to correct the essays, so you get what you get. Pretty boring.
She is one of the toughest English instructors at GCC and probably that's why she teaches English honors. If you love humanities and are not very interested in sciences, then take her class. Also if you like to work as hard as you can and end up with B, then take her. If you like to challenge your critical thinking and writing skills, take her.
I've had Marterella twice for both 101 & 102, and she's one of the best teachers I've ever had at GCC. She teaches you how to write credibly and think critically. The books were fun to read, and papers were easy to write because I discussed my ideas with her. Just do your best and show interest, and you will get an A.
I really didn't like her class and her constant lack of attending class. She overestimates her students quite a bit and the essays you write in class have to fit HER standards when she clearly states in the beginning of class that you should write how you want to, with some exceptions. You do need to read the books though.
I'm an English major and entered this class feeling excited to take my first college English class. Dana is a great person, but as a teacher, she's useless! I could have never attended class, read the books, and done the essays. She over analyzes everything and is extremely vague about her expectations.
She is great! I liked attending her class, she is very helpful and there when you need her. It wasn't a difficult class just do the reading and ask questions for the essays she's there to help you.
This class is not easy and she is a very hard grader, but as an English major, I am truly grateful to her. She challenges her students and thanks to that, all my other English classes have been a breeeze!
Great teacher! Honestly the class honors are just spent discussing the books and your opinions which is really fun. She prefers to listen to her students. The classes is heavy upon critical thinking, so just display so within your writing and you'll get an A. Shes great, just depends on the student.
She is one f the best teachers I have ever had. Follow whatever she say in class then you are fine. I learned a lot from her. she explains everything in detail and make it clear for student what she really expect.
Super easy class!! She made english super fun, and helped me improve my writing. (: Easy A if you attend daily and participate in class discussions (which get very interesting sometimes).
She is the best professor you will ever take! Her readings are very interesting :)
She's an amazing person and is so inspirational. While this was an easy class, it was also very interesting and I learned a lot about all kinds of things. She has a big heart and wants everyone to succeed, in her class and in life. I wish there were more professors like her. VERY fair, reasonable and understanding. You'll love her! Take her.
Amazing! I don't understand how anyone can complain. She's SO sweet, fair, reasonable, intelligent and inspiring! And it's one of the easiest classes I've taken, while also learning a lot. She offers so much time and help with the research paper, and is so lenient and understanding. She wants you to succeed and is very generous w grades. Take her!
TAKE HER!!!!! She is so understanding and really wants her students to PASS with flying colors. She works with you and gives you great feedback. She's GREAT. We read about 6 articles and 2 books the entire semester and incorporated them into our final research paper. She really knows how to teach.
She is one of the best professors at GCC she loves teaching and interacting with her students her readings are useful and easy she is a fair grader up to class if you wanna pass
She's the best professor I had this semester. Not a tough grader AT ALL. Made class easy and fun. Talks a lot but makes things interesting. Really understanding and truly wants everyone to pass. She's the sweetest and coolest. Hardly gives any homework, besides reading. Had only one project which was also the final.
Was given 4 books to read thru out the semester&have an inclass essay for each. For each book she lectured for 2-3 weeks each, and while the books are relatively easy (except for one) be ready to annotate and takes notes in a journal. The in class essays arent hard if you're prepared meaning you read&took approp. notes. Easy class.
No one understood what she was talking about. Teacher is very nice but all over the place. Very boring teacher you ask her one thing she replies with another . Does not give you specific instructions in fact just so we could understand one of the instructions on her assignment she went and printed some samples online. WILL NEVER TAKE AGAIN.
Professor Marterella is very passionate about her subject and it reflects on her way of teaching. I loved her class! She was very clear in giving instructions and very fair in grading. I would take a class with her again! She keeps the class engaged. She's really nice.
Professor Marterella is an easy A if you're good at writing since the grade is based mainly off three essays and they rest of the class is lecture 2
Very easy class! She assigned us 3 books to read with enough time. midterm was 2 short in class essays on the books. Main topic of the class was our research paper which is the final. Gives complete freedom on the research paper. Gives a lot of answers and help in class. Note taking is mandatory but I did minimum and got a. Long simple lectures
I had to buy 6 books for this class. Usually people wouldn't show up cause it was not mandatory. It was a rather boring class.
Do not take this class if you get bothered by people forcing their political opinions on you! She is very kind and caring but a hardcore liberal
A solid choice. Professor Marterella goes beyond the average text and gets to the core of books we read. She has immense passion and brings real life and current examples into the classroom. Very easy class, and only a couple books are required to be read throughout the semester, and if you don't completely read all of them you'll still be fine.
Amazing
If you are into political views, civil rights, or sharing opinions, this class is right for you. Don't purchase the books because you are hardly going to use them, rent them instead. Class is based on composition book, midterm, and research paper. Very understanding professor. Lets you leave class when needed. Lectures can be boring sometimes
Prof M, is an amazing English professor. this was my first college english class and i really enjoyed it. You read 3 books throughout the semester and have one midtern paper and one final reseach paper. She also grades you on participation in the class as well as completing a composition notebook by the end of the semester.
Prof Marterella was one of my favorite profs at GCC. She's incredibly kind and caring. Take her! There are only two essay that are very easy, show up, pay attention, take note!!!, and you'll be happy with your grade.
Honestly, this is a typical english class. Very political as you read books that are on climate change, race, and etc. You are expected to read on your own time. She gives you great feedback on your questions or comments. For her essays, try to follow the rubric as best as you can and youll get a good grade. Overall she is very nice!
Marterella was a really good teacher, and a fair too. She grades the final paper a bit harder than the midterm paper, but it's still easy to pass her class. We read 3 books, 2 of which our papers were on. The 2 essays, a journal reflection, and attendance makes up your grade. Just show up to class and read the books.
I was scared taking an English class because essays are my worst fear. Shes a good professor gives good feedbacks to students and if you have any questions shes there to help . You do 1 midterm paper and 1 final research paper. And lots of reading . Theres about 3 books but overall easy . Join class , participate , and Do hw and youll pass .
really good professor, you learn a lot in her class. she doesn't believe in homework so there's none of that. the class basically relies on two or three papers. she allows plenty of class time to work on them too. she also waves three absences in the class but she gives good lectures so it's good to go anyway.
There are three books, a midterm about the books, a final, and a journal throughout the semester. She's easy to talk to if you need help with a paper. Lectures can be complicated sometimes but the assignments are pretty straight forward. She answers emails when you need help. Great professor!
Inspiring professor with a non-traditional approach to English class. She isn't super specific with what she wants out of papers though. Very little emphasis on the fundamentals of writing, would advise to stay away if English/Humanities isn't your thing or if you're not already a good writer. That being said, still teaches a great class.
I highly encourage everyone to take professor Marterellas' class. It's a class that you won't find difficult and will actually get to enjoy. The only things really in your grade book are the midterm and final papers which she gives tons of class time to outline and write. Make sure you read the assigned reading so you can participate, it's fun.
Simply the best (for me). Hard to argue with that. Great lecturer, but not a lot of emphasis on compositional english and wouldn't recommend for someone still needing to work towards better academic writing as the class doesn't emphasize that much. Class values the people who do the work, put in the work and you have a solid grade.
She is a very smart professer. Taking the class was an eye opening experience. There is a LOT of reading (3 books) but it's totally manageable. I really don't like English but this class made me like it. She's the sweetest, too.
You'll read about three books in this class but you're not tested on the material as in memorization but instead, you apply the themes to writing or projects in class. Class discussion is very fun and engaging, never a dull moment. She grades holistically and is very understanding about any concerns. Extremely friendly and is there for her students
Prof Marterella is very helpful and clear in her lectures. A lot of reading, but It's pretty manageable. Your grade is based on attendance, midterm and final papers, and a journal. The midterm/final prompts were clear and she provided good feedback and assistance throughout the writing process. The journal is an easy 200 points. Great prof. overall
She makes sure You practice the "critical thinking" aspect of the course, and that's very good. Get ready to read a lot, but trust me, You'll be invested in all of the books by the end of it. Write a diary throughout the course and show it as Your journal.
Prof. Marterella overall was a kind teacher. Get ready to read, though. Overall, her class was pretty good. She definitely pushed the “critical thinking” part out to the class, which I liked. Her class was pretty good, she also gives some feedback on assignments and she's accessible outside of class. Though do get ready to read.
This is a nonfiction class; content is based on political violence. If you get a few examples + get the main points of the books, you'll be fine for the midterm + finals. Took a point off because she tends to ramble in lectures and I feel like only 30% of the content in each lecture actually matters. She does encourage critical thinking though.
