Vague, not helpful at all. She often gets concepts wrong and only tells students to refer to the textbook. Her information presented in lecture were sometimes wrong. Her questions were horribly worded and her practice questions conflicted too much with what is actually correct. Honest, if students doubt the professor then there is something wrong.
Extremely vague instructor that did not let us know what we were required to know for her test. Teaches us wrong information at some instances. Lectures are are never taught in a resonable manner making information harder to understand than it should.
This prof is awesome-she's energetic and engaged. I don't know what is wrong w the other reviewers, they are wrong!!!
I'm very surprised by some of the other reviews here, because I found Prof Miller to be very easy to follow and understand. I approached her after class once or twice to follow up on some of the concepts that I found most interesting, and she was very knowledgeable and nice.
Prof. Miller is amazing and awesome! She totally made learning biochem fun, her explanations are so clear and she is so helpful and engaging. And she is funny! (in a good way) I will totally try and take more courses with her.
Dr. Miller was super cool. Gave us candy to keep us engaged...tough thing to do first thing in the morning. She gave great lectures, was funny, thorough and challenging. It was tough - but so good. DON'T ask what's on the exam. She won't tell you and it is so pre-med and lame.
Solid class, learned a lot.
The class isn't easy (it's a 400-level BCH class, afterall), but I thought Professor Miller's lectures helped me get through the material. She was engaging in class and I learned a lot. The exam was tough, but fair.
Very vague and unnecessarily difficult. Instead of helping us to understand what we should know, told us that the tests could be on anything on any page of the book. One of those professors that thinks science should be difficult memorization, not conceptual learning.
AWFUL. She mumbles, makes mistakes, stutters and won't tell you what is going to be on the exam. She also tends to blame students for poor exam averages and gets a bit emotional.
Halfway through class. Got a 4.0 in BIOC 440 and am 2 std devs above this quarter. That said Miller makes are lots of speaking mistakes (gets enzyme names wrong), multiple mistakes on answer key in exam which took two weeks to fix and tons of regrades, horrible averages (43 avg and 73 max). Low max means a bad test, not dumb students. AVOID.
Wow, avoid if you can, not likely since she seems to be the instructor for the first half of 441 now. Awful lecturer, tries to be funny then blames the entire class for doing poorly on tests when she never explains what to know for them and doesn't teach it well in the first place.
One of the worst lecturers I've had at UW. She's unclear and often gets content wrong during lectures and contradicts herself; this often requires you to rewatch lectures online and read the textbook to clear up misinformation she gives. I had very little confidence in her knowledge.
One of the worst professors ever, she is constantly stubbing over words and correcting herself. Her slides are pictures from the book, so you're better off reading the book as it would likely be more clear than her. She doesn't care if you understand, she yelled at the class for the average being 43 rather than evaluating her own teaching skills.
I'd have to agree with everyone else. The 43 average with a high of 73 was just unfortunate. It really can't be the students fault when it's THAT bad. She dun' goofed bad.
I thought she was really good but if you don't go to class or read in advance, its easy to get lost. She pulled one hard question but it was out of the quarter. Way clearer and more engaged than other lecturers!
One of the all time worst professors I have ever had the misfortune of learning from. She made many errors and did NOT give points for correct answers on the exam!! Even after asking for a regrade on those questions. Blamed us for her inability to teach material! Her answer to ALL student questions was read the book! She should not be teaching!!!
Hands down the worst professor I've ever had at the university. While my grade in the class was fine, it was not worth the struggle. She spent most of her time condescending her students when they asked for help and blamed us for her unclear and convoluted exams. On top of it all, she refused to admit her mistakes when errors were noted in her key.
I usually don't hate profs, but she's an exception. I absolutely hated her and her way of teaching. She's not willing to answer questions and tells us to "read the textbook." She's frustrating, hard to deal with, and her tests are unclear. She tries to be the "cool" nonchalant professors, but ends up being a prof that doesn't give a crap about us.
She purposefully is unclear about what material is relevant for exams, and says the entire textbook is fair game. She often contradicts the text or is flat-out wrong. Her contribution to the course is essentially lecturing about the easiest material in the mountain of reading she assigns, then writing extraordinarily hard exams.
Miller was an unclear lecturer and she also frequently gave my class incorrect lectures slides, some of which she never bothered correcting. She scolded our class for doing badly on the test which tested these concepts which she presented incorrectly; I found that extremely insulting. She is poor professor among an otherwise talented bioc faculty
Basically just messes up on lectures, either verbally or written, and doesn't catch her mistakes until someone speaks up. Her writing on the slides is almost always illegible and incorrect. She also never responded to my emails and messages about a Canvas error during a quiz, which did not help me in the slightest.
exam is not that hard as long as u did homework, book problems and practice exam. bioc exam use old exam questions so practice exam is key to get some of the points! There was a mistake in one of our weekly quiz and someone posted it to ask for clarification, but she end up locking the discussion post, and no further response. very bad attitude !!
Toughest classes at UW taught by its weakest faculty. Did they not check if she could teach before they hired her? I feel totally gypped in my education. She lectures from material she doesn't even provide (versions she provides are ALWAYS missing slides & figures), and is completely disconnected from / uncaring of students. Read the book or fail.
Unorganized. Explains diagrams in a convoluted matter, to the point that even she doesnt understand what she said. Lectures don't cover all the reading material. Doesn't set clear expectations for the course (we don't know what the focus of the class is, because the reading is all over the book). She is not knowledgeable in this subject.
I would recommend not going to the lecture and just watching the lecture recordings. She doesn't explain concepts well. She says to know everything in the readings and she will only focus on a few of those topics. She puts questions on the exam that were not even covered during lecture, so pretty much you're learning everything from the textbook.
It's true. All of it.
Horrible professor. Does not help when asking for clarification, and most of the time makes the class more confused. Gets mad when someone points out that her lecture slides or what she says is wrong, and blames it on student misinterpretation. I do not believe that she knows the subject well enough to teach at all.
The most unorganized professor I have ever had at UW. Makes so many critical mistakes on lectures and exam grading rubric. Unfair grader, and does not deal with her mistakes well. I am very upset that everyone is required to have her as an instructor for BIOC441.
She's the worst professor. Every time during lecture, she makes a mistake and she doesnt bother clearing it up. Like about the word "Glutaminergic", theres no such word as that, and only after we pressed her on it, did she admit that she made up that word, and it was meant to be 'glutamatergic'. Even her exam questions are completely wrong.
She is an extremely incompetent professor. Treats students' grades like they're some sort of joke. On the first two midterms and all the quizzes there have been at least 20 errors which she refused to correct because "regrading all the tests is unrealistic" so people are losing points despite having the correct answer due to incompetent laziness.
Writes wrong exam keys, refuses to change it, penalizes students that wrote correct answers and rewards students with points for the wrong answers. Her excuse? "Your answer doesn't match the key" (the keys is wrong) and "I would have to regrade all 300 exams". She makes UW Department of Biochemistry look bad.
she's so confusing. she doesn't know what she's talking about most of the time. makes so many mistakes on exams and quizzes. the exams are really hard.
90% of class contents not provided before lecture. 85% of in-class time is taking notes; understanding her already confusing explanations is virtually impossible. She has issues in clarifying concepts, but whoever in the BIOC department designed the structure of lectures should be fired. Second BIOC course, still not sure why I take them.
Lectures are of no help on exams, as the questions are only somewhat related to whats covered. Acts like a control freak during exams, yelling at people to sit in specific sections and/or seats - an awesome start to an already stressful exam. None of the studying techniques learned during BIOC440 are helpful here. This is the worst professor at UW.
Professor Miller must have improved over previous year because I took for her for the first half of 2017's 441 and she was fine. Grades tough--the class is no joke but all the material for the exam is in the lecture slides. On exam day, very controlling of where students sit and creates unnecessarily stressful environment.
I took this class last year and am not sure if she has improved somewhat. Her lecture notes were extensive, yet she refused to post them after the lecture because apparently it "helps you focus". I have to spend two hours watching each lecture on Panopto just to write down all the notes.
She is the worst professor ever... Exams very difficult and she never post lectures slides that she used in class. She post the some slides that were supposed to be " facilitate note-taking" but the slides were out of order and its extremely to follow along....
The most annoying thing with her was that she did not post her notes, but you can take screenshots of her slides from Panopto. Other than that, her tests are pretty much off of the slides.
Her lectures are dry. The entire Bioc 44x series lacks effective professors. The only effective professor is Kolman in Bioc 442. To do well in the class read the book before lecture (reading questions are not useful), screenshot the slides from panopto, and do the past exams. It is an easy A, but many people are not motivated to put in ample work.
WOW Great lecture!
the reading guide is misleading
Biochemistry is hard enough without a professor that feels like she's actively trying to fail me. Doesn't upload annotated lecture slides for some reason, and lectures move way too quickly for you to actually take notes during class. You're honestly much better off watching the lectures at your own speed but that ends when she figures out polls.
No point in attending lectures. Miller goes too fast to take notes in class. Watch the panopto and go at your own pace, as well as have the option to screenshot lecture slides that Miller mysteriously refuses to post for students.
A lecture failed to upload during a snowstorm, and despite a number of students being unable to make it to class due to the weather, she still refused to upload annotated lecture slides, or even an old panopto. When students tried to use the discussion boards to exchange notes for the day, she closed the discussions.
Vague at best. Refuses to correct mistakes on quizzes and exams. It's pretty clear from her actions that she doesn't care about students at all. Her lectures are confusing (Hoppins is much better), and whoever said this was an easy A is kidding themselves. Do all the material and you still won't be able to match the inconsistencies in her teaching
Worst Professor Ever. Never take her if you want to save your GPA. I LOVE Bioc and got A in both classes besides BIOC441. The class was not structured and the exams were totally different from the practice papers. I wish I knew all that information before.
Dana unintentionally goes through topics really quickly (bc she's passionate), but everything she says is clear and extremely helpful for exams. I highly recommend going to lecture and then rewatching on Panopto to take note of anything you missed in class. Her exams are difficult but fair. Put in a genuine effort and you should do fine.
Dana has a tendency to go through her lectures very quickly, however, if you really listen to what she's saying, she's really clear and manages to explain complex topics in a comprehensible way. Her exams are really fair and she doesn't try to trick you, just make sure you understand what she's trying to test. Panoptos after lectures will save you.
Gives no hint as to which concepts in lecture you need to know or understand, but happens to go on tangents often after rigorous, unevenly paced lecturing with poor organization.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD If possible, do NOT take a class with Dana. I have never felt more uncomfortable and belittled by a professor. She has one of the lowest ratings at UW for a reason. She is rude and the classroom environment was cold and very unwelcoming.
Very unorganized and unclear about the material. Makes students feel bad about themselves and tends to be outwardly rude.
I have never been so lost in my life. Random tangents, some important, some not, who knows?
Worst professor I have ever taken. Lectures are disorganized and unevenly paced, and the reading guide is long and vague. The questions on the tests and quizzes are convoluted and unclear. Problems mentioned in other reviews were exacerbated due to the pandemic. Hoppins is much better at teaching the material.
You know that scene in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy is swept up in the tornado and the world is collapsing around her and just when she thinks it cant get any worse, the wicked witch of the west flies past her and scares her half to death? Thats kinda what taking this class with Dana Miller is like.
Dana is the worst professor I have ever taken by far. Her lectures are unclear and unorganized and she mysteriously refuses to post lecture notes despite her slides just being screenshots from the textbook. Very rude to students. Review sessions before exams were almost unbearable because of how mean and smug she would be to students. AVOID!
Worst professor at UW. Outright shows a lack of respect for students and makes it clear she does not care if you succeed or not- rather shes just being forced to teach for her lab funding. In review sessions, if a student asks a question that she doesnt think is confusing, shell straight up say, how are you confused?. Smug, arrogant, rude.
Sent grades to the registrar that made us happy and then sent out an email saying that she would be changing our grades. Crushed all of our spirits. Downright cruel.
Wont take this again
Very unorganized. She is continually baffled about how to use canvas and is very hard to get into contact with regarding our concerns.... took many email breaks where she unavailable to students. Posted grades for the course and then said she would be lowering them after because she messed up her grading. Horrible
DANA is literally the most UNQUALIFIED person to become an instructor! A week since the deadline to submit our grades but those professors have still NOT figured out how to do that. They messed up the whole classes GPA twice! No transparency on how they grade, lectures full of errors! She makes sure that you don't learn anything but hate your life
Ive been trying for like ten minutes to find a way to rate a professor 0/5.
The worst professor I've ever had. Very unorganized material. She even refuses to provide annotated slides for students to download because that's her "property".
She was rude and unresponsive. I have been distracted by mental health issues on top of the pandemic. Other professors have listened to my call for help and been accommodating. This professor just told me to look at the syllabus and she couldnt help me. I dont want to sound entitled to special changes, but she could have been more considerate
She obviously does not care about students and is very rude and unprofessional during class sessions. Incompetent.
I don't think she's spiteful and mean like others do. I think she's just incredibly awkward and self-centered, with no idea what she's doing. 34% midterms becoming 94% after curve, everyone lost a huge chunk of grade with NO explanation after final grades posted, reading "guides" were 6-10 hours of work PER DAY to complete. We all gave up.
While she is rude sometimes, she clearly knows the material well. Her lectures are unevenly paced, but after the first few lectures, it is definitely possible to adapt to her teaching style. Test questions are fair and on topic.
I don't get the horrible reviews, she was unaccommodating at times but people acted like she was the devil. She has long lectures but I think she gives a really clear explanation and you can tell she is super passionate about the topic. She is really funny and I lowkey miss her. Her tests are straightforward, you have to work hard to do well.
I'm a good student (3.65GPA, stem major) but the workload is absolutely absurd. Miller publishes pre-lecture videos to be watched before lecture, which are sometimes more than TWO HOURS of content. This is to be watched before a 50-minute class period that meets three times a week. Slides and lectures are poorly organized.
While I enjoy that Professor Miller has a lot of enthusiasm for her material, the way the class is set up just isn't realistic (BIOC 441). You could probably fill your whole day studying for her class alone, given all the reading questions, extra material, lectures, and pre-lecture videos.
Frankly, it is a chore to listen to her lecture. She struggles to read from her own notes, litters every sentence with at least 4 um's, has 5 second pauses in the middle of sentences. The class material is not difficult but she is incapable of public speaking, much less talking into a mic, you should at least edit your lectures and try again.
This class made me regret not only my major, but also coming to UW all together. They don't care about your learning and don't take feedback. There have been so many complaints about this prof, and yet the University hasn't fired them. I cannot stress this enough, but if you can avoid Dana Miller, DO SO.
I did well in Bioc 440 but this proff is just atrocious. I take very detailed notes on the lectures and the exams just seem to be on material thats so arbitrary and random. Her lectures are full of small errors and she doesn't even make herself accessible via a zoom office hour. This woman just doesn't really care that much about student success :)
Flat out terrible. She makes you watch pre-recorded lectures before the synchronous lectures, only to shove more material down your throat during the synchronous lectures. The class average for the 1st midterm was 24/54. BIOC is already a pretty difficult course, but Dana's lack of organization makes it so you don't even know what to study for.
Lecture format is the worst is the worst I have ever seen. Test formatting was horrible and did not allow time management. If you have to take this class, pray you do not have this professor.
Dana is a nice person. But she is one of the single worst professors I've ever seen. Exams are literal nightmares with no real prep, and there is no meaningful way to raise your grade outside of lectures. The whole biochem department at UW is an abomination. Unless you want to work in this field, change majors. it only gets worse.
Taking a class with Dana is kind of like the equivalent of getting pushed down and then getting repeatedly kicked in the face for 10 weeks straight...
It's only Week 4 of the quarter yet I can already say that Prof. Miller is probably the worst professor I have ever taken at this school, and worst educator I have ever dealt with in my career as a student.
She is literally horrible. Our TA has tried her best to save us but everything is still a disaster. She just throw pre-recorded lectures to you and believe that's all the explanation you need for understand, then give you more random materials on class. The test questions can come from anywhere but your class material.
In person lectures were helpful bc we did practice problems that were based on real papers. If you work at a lab, that will probably help you in this class. She was not the best at explaining and exams were tough but the curve is your friend. Most important thing is to understand overall concepts and learn how to apply them to real life examples.
This class was a literal nightmare. This professor has almost 10 years of the exact same complaints against her and they're all true. The only reason I didn't fail is because the entire class was failing the same amount together so somehow we all passed.
If you AFK the class you'll get an AFK grade idk what to tell ya i literally just showed up to lectures and walked out with a 3.6
It is abundantly clear that Dr. Miller is here for the research and never wanted to be a teacher. They are knowledgeable and passionate about Biochem but make no effort to share that with the students. Exam averages were ridiculous, but trust the curve and you will pass. The syllabus changed twice within the quarter. Exam Keys were often incorrect.
I took Miller Winter of 2023. In the top 3 of worst professors I have had at UW ever.
