Professor Hughes has been a great professor this semester. He's funny and is a genuine good guy who just wants you to succeed in his class, if you put in the work. 3 projects: Excel, Access, and Tableau. Final is optional. Attendance is MANDATORY but definitely go, Hughes has lots of real-life experience and it's great to learn from him!
He is a good professor and knows what he is talking about. You have a few weekly assignments, which aren't hard until you get to the last few units, but he is there to help if you ask. You did a class-case assignment on Monday, and it was optional on Wednesday. Four exams with an optional final exam. Easy to earn an A; you just have to try.
Had 3 assignments every week and 5 exams but he drops the lowest one. Attendance was only mandatory on Mondays where you did the in class assignment. Super helpful when you needed it.
three relatively easy assignments a week except near the end of the semester, things get more complicated, but he's GREAT. Only attendance on Monday (which is when you do 1 of the assignments) but has class on Wednesday for help. 4 exams (easiest exams ever) and an optional final. You can tell he likes his job and life and his positivity rubs off!
Professor Hughes is a great professor. However do take note that in this class, expect HEAVY work loads. There will be nights where you spend up to 4-5 hours of just completing assignments. There are no extra credit opportunities however the final is optional. Would honestly recommend other professors if available.
Very bad experience with this professor, no flexibility, no make up work. Quizzes are only available on Saturdays and no work arounds. Would not recommend taking this professor.
Would not recommend taking this professor, very rude and disrespectful. Communication outside of class was very disrespectful and does not allow any flexibility. All attendance is mandatory including Fridays and takes attendance 3 different ways for some reason.
If you can get in with a different professor would highly recommended. Not willing to help students that have questions and concerns. Wants to see students fail. Has no sense of sympathy or willing to guide students at all.
Just an overall terrible experience with him as a professor. Don't sign up for his class if you need it and he's your last resort. No guidance or help to prep for any of the exams. Terrible experience and would recommend literally any other professor.
Class is easy but time-consuming. If you attend class, he will walk you through the in-class assignment which is very similar to the homework/projects. About 4 assignments a week. The lowest test grade is dropped.
Awesome professor if you do the work and meet the deadlines. Attendance is mandatory and participation is important. Assignments and tests are tough but reasonable and covered during lectures. Plenty of time for assignments but do not do not wait until the last minute. Great stories if you listen, relates current topics to class.
Attendance and participation required and graded partially subjectively-will tell you the topics on test. Test has large subjectively graded sections. Group project heavy with same grade applied to all group members. No clear grading rubric, all graded by TAs-must ask for grading rubric to see it & set up meetings with him to hear details of grade.
Professor Dane Charles Hughes is one of the worst professors at the university. He is on a massive power trip and this class is run terribly. Reads directly off the slides, and doesn't care about anyone in the class. Stay Away.
He coo
Very clear on expectations and helps whenever needed. Typically have about a day a week (1/3) of class that is optional. Great teacher.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time to do the weekly assignments. Relatively easy class, just time-consuming. The lectures consist of reading off slides and afterwards he'll walk you through step by step the in class case assignment. Usually lets you leave early after the lecture unless you want to stay to ask questions. Exams are open note.
Professor Hughes is a nice guy. The only problem is the class is treated as if they are still in high school. Required to make your own name tag and bring it to class. Attendance is mandatory by bringing your physical student ID every class (if you forget, you're absent) Exams are intentionally made difficult b/c flooded w info. Take Theophile!!
Dane was a great professor. Attendance was only required for the case study periods and the occasional lectures. The tests were easy and he provided a lot of review material. He's very good with the course material and will help you if you need it. Goes quick in the lectures though so make sure you pay attention.
He is not a good teacher. He makes the class more stressful than it is and seems like he doesn't want his students to succeed. Weekly quizzes about the chapter, 3 tests, an optional final, 3 ILAs ( excel, access, tableau assignments), 2 group projects (one is a presentation).
Dane is an amazing professor. His ILA's and exams are very difficult but the class itself is enjoyable. You will have group projects and some quizzes. Make sure you review the textbook/quizzes for exams! And make sure you go to class and take notes!
Attendance only mandatory on Mondays, as long as you understand the homework and textbook assignments the exams are very easy, overall as long as you stay on top of your work this class in an easy A.
Great professor! He is very fun to talk to and gives you everything you need to be successful. Not every day is attendance mandatory but I highly recommend going as many days as possible. Make sure to do all your assignments as well. He does not allow make-ups. Overall, he is fantastic and I highly recommend him.
slight class but sooo boring. I'd take a once a week night class cuz having to go to this over and over is SOOO boring. its just basic excel. do the practice exam and its essentially all the exams. Also you can skip out on the final if you do all of the semester exams
Horrible communication
Took this class a while ago. He is straight up not a good person. About as likable as a pesky mosquito.
His attitude was very unprofessional from the first day of class. He stated that he did not care if you were in a car accident and still excepted you to show up for class. I got a illness and he would not let me retake the test even with proof.. I had to go higher up so they could meet with him so I could take the test. He is a horrible professor.
This professor is very nice and caring. He helps you with any questions you have. The first few modules of the excel program (Cengage) are very easy and he walks you step-by-step through the first projects. Getting an A is really easy and it honestly doesn't take much if you know what you're doing and if you dont, ask questions he's there to help!
He is an administrator/instructor, not a teacher or professor. He will support you really well but most of what he does is keep things in line.
In my experience, he is a self-entitled old man. I have been to his office hours on numerous occasions and I always came back feeling completely helpless in his class. I did not really get the sense that he wants his students to succeed. I don't believe he is a great teacher, but more of a slide show presenter.
he does nothing. pretty much he shows a slideshow and tells you to do it yourself. Cengage does all the grading and he does not care what situation you are in. Do not take
Horrible professor, all the good ratings are not real ratings. Please avoid at all costs has not care for the students.
Great class. Students who struggle are lazy or do not pay attention. Project and exams are tough but everything is covered in class. Do not miss deadlines. Good real world stories if you listen in class.
If I could've taken this online I would have. There wasn't much point in showing up to class and you're often left to trial and error on your own as he acts as more of a monitor than a teacher. He seems friendly, but if you're looking for guidance from him on something you're not gonna get it.
Good prof - not sure why all the haters
attendance isn't mandatory and i only went if i had questions which wasn't often. he doesn't really teach, its more of a review or going over an assignment. there's usually 3-4 excel projects a week but each won't take more than an hour and you can easily use ai to help.
Easy class - most assignment can be done anytime - prof and TA are helpful if you need it
Wished he would go through software applications and show practical examples of how to use MS Access, MS Visio, Tableau, etc. or even give some SQL practice. Instead he read off slides and created a group project that felt as though I learned nothing. Focuses a bit too much on attendance and participation like he's a middle school teacher.
Lots of work. Projects are time consuming. Lectures from book. Good professor explains real world difference from class work
Lots of homework - 2 days a week were just for questions, good professor
All of the assignments for this class are 100% asynchronous, the classes are optional and only if you need help. Other professors for this course require attendance so avoid them if possible since class is not necessary.
Decent professor, but if you miss an assignment or an error occurs while doing one of your timed excel projects, don't bother reaching out to him since he doesn't accept any excuses for "missed," or late work. Classes are optional so are the textbook assignments, just stay on top of your work and pray that nothing bad happens on your timed project
This class has a lot of homework but it isn't difficult. Professor Hughes explains things fairly clearly and goes over one of the weekly assignments during class. He can be a little monotonous but attendance isn't required.
Dane Hughes is an awesome professor. He has fun in his classes with his students, likes to have the class involved during lectures, and is overall just a funny guy. 10/10 would recommend Dane Hughes, don't let the other reviews scare you. He cares about how his students are doing and wants to see you succeed not fail. Attendance is mandatory.
Professor Hughes was a great professor. He's funny, and a very chill man. What I didn't like about his class was that the tests and exams were heavily graded and the homework was lightly graded since there were so many it didn't matter if you didn't do a few.
Professor Hughes was a great Professor and the material was very dry but he makes up for it by giving you in-class time to work on the Excel projects. This course is more than anything a learn-as-you-go type of course so you must apply yourself to learn on your own and use the in-class time to go over formulas you may not know.
I recommend showing up to lectures especially if you're not familiar with Excel.
This is the worst professors I've ever had. He assigns multiple assignments on "exam" days which take you 2 hours each to do as well as the exam. His assignments take forever, and the site he uses doesn't even grade correctly. ACTUALLY AWFUL. I FR DO NOT RECCOMEND. On top of that he is the rudest person ever and could care less about you.
This professor has no care for anyone. His lectures are quite lengthy and his exams are very difficult and hard to study for without a study guide or any kind of guidance on what it is going to include. He is quite unprofessional as well as he can be really rude and immature at times. If there is one thing to tell is to is not to take this class.
This professor has no care for his students and is very unprofessional and immature. He is not reasonable with his grading style, class assignments, and lecture style. He stands up in front of every class and reads off his slides. For exams (worth over 50% of your grade) he doesn't provide any guidance on what to study. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Good professor. Test are hard you have to read the textbook.
Excel is boring but Professor Hughes tries to make it interesting. Take advantage of the class times for questions. Lots of homework - do not miss due dates.
Terrible professor don't take this class take literary any other professor.
Good prof material is boring - read the book!
Tough class - do not miss deadlines there are no exceptions for missed work exams are hard
All about learning Excel. Final is required other exams are projects. lots of assignments. Professor Hughes goes over the end of module assignment and has plenty of time to ask questions.
good professor. he tried to make the class fun. i don't understand the reviews below unless those students didn't follow instructions, his class is hard to fail
Very lecture heavy. Homework is tough and takes time. Exams are tricky. No exceptions for late work. Overall, good prof - just stay on top of assignments.
This guy is such a power trip. Makes the class and exams so hard and wants to see his students fail. He likes the feeling of control over other students. Really weird Professor. Just take someone else.
Nothing wrong with the professor but the workload is HEAVY multiple assignments a week with a few of them taking up to 3 hours to complete. Exams are tough but expected. Assignment and grade policy is very clear and easy to understand, do the work on time and you will get a good grade.
This was my worst class at UNCC. The course lacked real teaching structure, clear content for exams. Exams were 50 questions/ 50 minutes. Communication was unhelpful he was very sarcastic in his responses. Barely any help in navigating required software (Microsoft, Tableau, Excel, etc.) I hope future students do not face the same experience.
Not sure what t class the ones below were in. Prof Hughes dedicated a class to each software (excel, access, and tableau). Lectures got a little monotonous but covers everything. Exams are tricky but if you attend class and read you will be fine.
Good professor, but very strict. Assignments and quizzes are easy but exams are tough. lock in and do the work and you will be fine.
Easy class. Lots of work each week. Mondays are instructions on the weekly assignments and Wednesday is for help and questions. Always willing to help you.
Very exam heavy with 0 guidance. Participation is worth a ton so if you go to every class it only matters if you talk in each. Doesn't explain at all when you have questions.
If you are going to take his class, go to class and participate in some way. His exams are hard; you need to study and read the textbook. He is very inconsiderate when you ask him for help on how to better improve your grade. Choose another professor if you can; you will thank me later.
If you are lazy take another prof. High expectations, tests are hard. No rounding, your grade is what you earn.
I took Prof Hughes for 2 classes. INFO 2130 is easy, the only way to fail is to not turn in the work. INFO 3130 is different. Assignments are challenging and deadlines are strict. Exams are tough but he covers everything in the lectures and it is in the textbook. He takes no BS on missing work or class.
Good professor. He treats the online section just like an in person. Attendance is part of your grade but you have to have your camera on. Exams are using Zoom instead of the lockdown browser/webcam. Make sure to read the textbook.
Just finished INFO 3130 in summer. I do not recommend it, pace is too fast. Exams are hard but homework is pretty easy. lots of time needed to pass.
Great prof. Lots of stories about Charlotte. Exams are tough you have to study and read
Literally the worst instructor ever. Doesn't care abt what students think and it seems he goes the EXTRA mile to make life hard for his students. Toughest grader for literally no reason?? Will make you hate MIS even if you liked it before. Doesn't give feedback, and def doesn't take any. Just take someone else, even if it means it's at an odd time
Very laid back and very easy to talk to. Willing to help with every assignment to make sure you understand the content. He publishes all the work for the entire semester on the first day. Each assignment has 3 attempts with a detailed summary of what you did wrong. Lot of work, but its not hard if you pay attention. VERY easy A. HIGHLY recommend!!!
Good prof - lectures are long but covers all test material. U must lock in and study the tests are hard. Group work is ok if your group does not wait to start the projects.
This was easily the most frustrating class I've taken. The professor grades way too harshly, offers no real feedback, and doesn't seem to care about student concerns at all. The class felt stressful for no reason and honestly made me dislike MIS. I'd avoid taking him if you can.
Prof Hughes is an old school prof. Strict grader with high expectations - just follow the instructions and include everything and you will be fine. Lectures are important and you have to pay attention. Exams come straight from the book and lecture. Projects count alot, a good working group is important.
Take it online and do not waste your time. The lectures are useless, and you can literally do everything outside of class. If you breath too load in class while he talks, he will threaten to kick you out. He will stress you out for no reason, saying how hard the units and capstones are, just do not listen and keep up with work and you will be fine
I regret I didn't take this class online. Professor doesn't give you more than what you learn while doing textbook tasks by yourself. What I learnt in class is mostly how everybody will fail this class and how difficult it is. Don't even try to whisper during class, he will get mad. Easy A, but didn't enjoy or benefited from his lectures.
Easy A, Prof Hughes is willing to help you if you have questions. 3 big assignments each week but not difficult if you pay attention in class. good prof
This was my second class w/ Professor Hughes. He has been fantastic in both. Instructions are always clear, and he is very helpful. There were several HW assignments, & three exams. Overall, I highly recommend taking him for either 3130 or 3234. Definitely one of the best professors in the BCOB.
I am in the INFO 2130 class with the 2 guys below that complain about being called out for talking. I sat on the next row over and could hear them "whispering". Professor Hughes was right to tell them to be quiet. Professor Hughes is a good instructor and will help you anytime you need it. Good, easy class.
Do not take this class. I regret not taking the online class, he is a very hard person to work with. When you ask for help, he says that it is all your fault and to figure it out. His lectures are pointless, he just reads the textbook to you. Does not care about his students and basically wants them to fail.
If you put in effort it's a very easy class. You learn basically everything you could ever want to know about excel. If you have an issue the professor is very responsive and easy to work with on email.
Somebody below shames other people for complaining about being called out for talking, saying they heard them when that's literally people from other section. I guess he likes to do that in every class even when nobody other than him hears "talking". Easy class, but you can teach it to yourself. He indeed just reads the textbook to you in class.
Professor Hughes is very helpful if you do not wait until the last minute. Lectures are review of the concepts but he lets you know what you will see in the real world instead of just in the classroom. easy class if you do the work. lots of help sessions for questions.
Grades very harsh follow every detail in the instructions. being part of class discussion makes a big difference in your grade. good prof and good class
such an incredibly easy class. will say the classes itself are incredibly boring but attendance is not mandatory even though he takes attendance everyday.
