He's a pretty entertaining guy but his test are really hard, Study!!!
Super nice guy, very interesting lectures. HARD TESTS!!
Great Prof!!!!!So very nice and helpfull, great examples and interesting topices
I agree his tests are impossible!!And he makes stupid jokes!!!
HARD tests .. extremely nice teacher ..
Mr. Stimulee-took this course and still couldn't tell you anything.

Best prof I've ever had, tests are tricky; he always clarifies ques if asked
Study HARD for the tests, they're hard! Very nice and interesting prof!
Sweet guy. Makes class interesting.

He is genuinely one of the nicest profs at the U of M. However, his tests are almost impossible, and studying will only get you so far.
cool guy ... bonus marks for extra work!
Great professor. Got me hooked on sociology. Lives the subject. Not easy but always willing to help if he sees the student is sincere
Great professor!
Interesting lectures, is very enthusiastic about the course, but his tests are wayyyy to hard. There's really no point in studying, its almost impossible to get an A.
He is a really helpful prof, but the earlier statement is so true... freaking hard to study or do well on his tets.
i proved it! i studied for 3 of the 4 tests this year. marks were 80, 64, and 67 (studied crazy hard for the 67). i did not study for the final test and got 80. IT IS PURE CHANCE!
Tests are stupid! All questions are "Which statement is false?" Studied like a mofo and still only got a C.
One of the greatest profs ever. Appreciates class participation and overt interest in Sociology, not just a bunch of people filling requirements. Tests are hard, as tests in university ought to be. Took three classes with the man, got 3 A's.
Very nice. Incredibly helpful. His tests are extremely difficult. Did better when I didn't study at all. Keep up with the readings though. Bonus assignment was nice.
Very nice guy. Genuine interest in sociology. His lectures are pretty interesting. Assignment is pretty easy. Tests are really hard, as said before. They are all multiple choice.
A sweet little man. And yes, his tests are a bit of a challenge, but if we want easy tests we should go back to kindergarten.
The most irritating all-time lecturing style. Has the Dr. Hibbert syndrome (laughs when talking about the Holocaust even), repeats what he writes on the board over and over, and leaves meaningless blanks at the end of sentences for the class to fill in. Going to class makes me want to impale myself.
Social psych is an interesting class, and Albas is so into it. He's a really great prof and a nice guy, but his tests are just ridiculously hard. I'm an A student and I studied and I got 60% which is really unheard of for me. I'm hoping I never have to take a class with him again. Kill my GPA :(
The guy is an idiot, has the worst lecture style I have EVER seen. Jumps around in his speach.I did not need his course thought it sounded interesting, he made me want to drive red hot nails through my eyes. WILL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!
Dr.Albas is a good proffessor. I've taking two of his tests the first was pretty easy. The secound felt even easier (granted I had to put in a lot of time reading the 17 chapters required) I like his teaching style, it keeps you interested. His notes are average. overall just pay attention in class
very interesting teaching style. passionate about what he does. tests are somewhat challenging but if you ask him to clarify the question he basically gives you the right answer or at least points you in the right direction... no joke.
The lectures are interesting but his tests are AWFUL!! Great guy but I doubt I'd ever take another class with him...sorry.
Made me want to nail his feet to the floor, never held still. Worst hand writting I have ever seen. Worst prof I have EVER had and I am working on my second degree. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH THIS MAN.
He is very very helpful, knowledgable and such a good spirit professor. It is great to study with him.
Great teaching style... very interesting and funny. Tests are difficult but he gives lots of tips.
An interesting Prof. Nice man, better than his wife! He gives great lectures and very passionate about this course.Tests were difficult, never really made sense and pretty much everything was from txt! But i must say he's more approachable & helpful than his wife! STAY AWAY FROM HER! If you weant to learn something, take him!
This guy is amazing. I didn't have much interest in the course when i first started it but I quickly found out that is class is GOOD. His tests aren't difficult at all as long as you go to every class and go over your notes properly as his tests are heavily based on his notes.
Hes a really nice entertaining prof. However his lectures seem to be all over the place and I often have no idea whats going on, so its probably good to read the text before class (which I havnt done). His tests are based pretty much on text so far.
The best prof i've ever had!
Dr. Albas is a passionate lecturer, but a word of caution: trying to decipher his handwritten notes will leave you with a dizzy headache. He talks a mile a minute and has the most ridiculous penmanship ever. That being said, his lectures are engaging and thought-provoking. Overall, a decent prof.
just bad. makes you read tons of pages of notes and then askes like 1 question from some of the readings which can be over 50 or 100 pages
been through 2 classes and ive dropped. hes all over the place, and has covered every social science but the one hes supposed to lecture. laughs at everything he says funny or not. no online notes, class is mandatory and his lectures are impossible to follow. his writing is terrible
After everthing he says.. he says .. "does the make sense" .. EVERYTHING im not exaggerating when I say that .. and then he laughs during and after he says it..borrrrrrring class.. i usually write on my notes at some point "does that make sense" cause its always stuck in my head....
HE SUCKS. he gives a definition for one thing and then the next day he gives it a completely different definition. Lecture notes are useless for the tests. I am never taking his classes again
He's very approachable and nice. Tests are difficult but pay attention to his lectures. Class average very low but class assignment and bonus assignment can really help one's grade by the end of the course. Clarifies questions very well if needed.Don't give his class up, in the end very worthwhile.
Albas is scatterbrained and so are his notes; he'll bring up a topic and finish the thought nine classes later. Spend $60 on a 60 page book he wrote with his wife, which is as confusing, dry, boring, and uninspirational as his lectures. I closed my notebook countless times in class because it's impossible to follow his thought process.
He is in general a nice man, you can tell he is very passionate about his work but im not too impresssed with his teaching style, he could make his lecture notes more clear and he gives tests on the first week back from christmas break! I dont think that thats very fair...
He is a great guy and he teaches with so much enthusiasm which makes it easy to listen to him. But his notes are practically usesless and his tests are based off of them, though you wouldn't know it by looking at them.
Incredibly hard tests - Avg of 50% based on mostly readings which contain difficult language. Prof is extremly passionate but you HAVE to go to class to pass his courses.
By far my fav prof. Very helpful if you ask
He is a great guy and is really funny at times and he doesn't even know it. His notes are useless, they make no sense what so ever. He does know his stuff and he is helpful if you ask him a question but his notes are EVERYWHERE, drives me crazy. Overall hes a pretty good guy and you'll do well if you try and read the text book, not your notes.
He is a man who loves the subject but tests are tricky and notes are disorganized. VERY WORDY in tests, learn to decipher what is critical information. After writing the first test it's clear you need to not only study for tests but be able to apply them to examples and connect various concepts
This guy kicks ass!
Nice guy, very excited about sociology! Teaches out of his own textbook. Pay attention to small details. Tries to trick you with multiple choice (unecissarily wordy). OK course, shouldn't be a full year.
he's soo nice and helpful
Watch out for this guy. Great professor, but his exams are a killer. Students that study a month in advance end up getting B's and C's because his exams are more of aptitude tests than applications of knowledge. Unless you're really good with exams and can remain calm when you see a half a page long multiple choice question, I advise you to avoid.
Are his exams difficult? Yes. Are they impossible? No. If I got an A in this class, it goes to show it isn't possible. Don't just blaze through the text. Highlight and summarize what's important, and you'll do well. Don't expect to get an A according to the scale, though. He likes to manipulate the spread. Great professor. I'd recommend any day.
Good prof, keeps things moving in class and sticks to the outline. Very knowledgeable, just has an issue with running late to class.
This prof is a great guy, always laughing at his own jokes. He lectures are interesting however all over the place. No organization and exams are tough. His questions are about half a page and require real focus. i would not recommend the prof to any first year student unless they are very self motivated.
He was really nice but he did seem to lose focus and sometimes was not very clear in his lectures. I did not use the text much and had to pay over 100 dollars for it. His exams were the hardest because the questions were 6 or 7 lines and were not always worded clearly, same with the answers so it was hard to decipher which one was correct.
Dr. Albas is a wonderful man who is always smiling! As for my notes, they are very unclear. After each lecture I have to go through them and filter out all of his stories he wrote down. I often lack definitions to concepts he writes on the board. He is great if you're looking for a nice prof, but if you want clear, easy, study able notes get cheryl
Very nice and helpful, although tests are very hard. Has a very understanding TA too
He basically goes over each chapter and highlights definitions from each (according to his outline). Lots of writing but he clarifies all points in text. He tells interesting stories which help you understand content and he's a funny guy. Read the text required before each class or you'll be lost.
Although his tests are very hard, you will never have a professor more passionate and knowledgeable in their field like albas. Enthusiasm kept me awake in early morning class, and tests draw straight from textbook, so BUY IT and you'll be fine! Couldn't recommend a better Sociology professor.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!!!!!! Do not take! Very very difficult tests and exams. Try and find a different sociology professor, I'm sure the course would be interesting, just not with him.
best prof i ever had. took all his classes i could
not the easiest class but Dan and his wife are wonderful professors who honestly want you to do well and will help you learn in any way they can.
Good teacher, go to class
Dan Albas is the reason I perused a career is socio-economics as a professional speaker, trainer, facilitator, writer and management consultant. Over the course of my career I have combined what I learned in the social sciences with business. I anchored my teaching style in his approach. A great mentor for a young man finding his way.
He tests hard, and his notes in class are all over the place at times, but you will never find a man more passionate about his field. He's extremely funny, always engaged with the students, and the light energy he brings to lectures is phenomenal. If you need help, he is more than willing to assist you one on one. I highly recommend him!
Great guy, It's obvious he loves what he does and is really funny. Lectures are all over the place but you'll realize he's taking most of what he is saying from the two textbooks with his own spin on the deffinitions. Study the bold words in the text books and you'll be fine for the tests.
A little all over the place, but very passionate, respectable, him and his wife are great professors. Exams are easy if you do the work and critically think.
This is an awesome teacher. Definitely recommend it to anyone interested in sociology especially if you want a good grade. If you show up to class you are guaranteed a good grade in this class. Very nice guy and he is always willing to give help or clarify. He is also very funny in class and has tons of interesting stories.
Takes a while to get the the point, his lectures are all over the place, messy notes on the board. Often need to ask for clarification.
He does write his notes on the white board and does not put them online, which is a downside. But love this prof! I could listen to him teach all day long!
I was not excited for this course whatsoever, but Dr. Albas made me turn to love it. Amazing prof. Obvious he loves what he does. All material is written in class so attendance is a must. Lectures are EXTREMELY engaging with great explanations and hilarious examples. Always has a positive attitude and gladly answers questions in and out of class.
Do not take this class if you need organization in order to learn. His lectures are all over the place and you either get what he's talking about or you don't. Tests are very hard but he is a very nice guy who tells interesting stories.
Dr. Albas is an amazing prof. His lectures are hilarious and his passion for the subject keeps you engaged. The presentation of material got confusing at times, but he was more than willing to clear things up after class or office hours. Great course!
Professor Albas is absolutely fantastic! I wouldn't recommend him if you need organization to get a good grade, as his lectures were all over the place... BUT, he gives so many examples that it's really hard not to understand what he's talking about! All year class, only 4 (which is false) tests, and 1 easy grade booster assignment!
I was originally going to take this course with a different prof but a friend recommended I take his instead. He is super funny. Writes fast but if you ask he will clarify. Really enjoued this class!
Dr. Albas does not provide any organization what so ever. He also doesn't say when readings need to be read. His tests are also very hard. He doesn't upload notes online and also doesn't email. His notes on the board are also super messy. Would not recommend taking sociology with him
Hold onto your syllabus he doesn't upload it online. He's a little disorganized but he repeats himself a lot and will emphasize what you need to know to do well. He's genuinely interested in sociology and hand writes all his notes. It took time to get used to his style of teaching but I really enjoy it - its almost like a conversation/story telling
Dr. Albas' lectures notes often didn't make much sense, and if you handwrite notes you'll be writing so fast to catch everything he's writing that you can't write what he's physically saying out loud... which is the most useful information. Tests are extremely hard, he had to curve the class up a whole letter grade because we did so poorly
Dr. Albas is such a wonderful prof. You have to show up to the lectures and take notes but he repeats everything he is writing multiple times so you can get it all down. He marks fairly and is always accessible, even giving out his home phone number. I always recommend taking courses with him!
Professor Albas is a fantastic prof and his class are very interesting and he keeps you engaged the whole time. his examples are amazing and he's really funny. you can tell he really loves what he does. his tests aren't as difficult as everyone says. as long asa you take good notes and read all the assigned textbook chapters you'll be fine
He really is a great guy, very passionate, wants you to do well, and very funny. He gives great examples in class, but the tests are extremely hard. I found it next to impossible to do really good in his class.
Worst professor I have ever had. The wording used in exams are there to trick you. If you do not know every single thing from textbook and lectures, you will not get a good grade. He means well, but if I go from an A+ on the first exam to a D on the last, something is wrong. I wanted sociology to be my major, and he has ruined the course for me
Daniel truly does care about his students, however he doesn't post anything online and only relies on unorganized handwritten notes. Very hard to follow along and very hard to study as well. Class average was less than 65%. Exam questions are very specific (by 1 word) and are usually paragraphs about something he said one time, 4 months prior.
He is very good prof but a little disorganized. Very helpful but his test are tricky. Be careful during tests. He is a very fair marker though as he gave me an A+ on my conceot assignment which I thought was insanely bad. Also, read the textbook and student life and exams specially for test the only test that I bombed which I got 60
Him and his wife both teach this course, but dont teach the exact same material, she makes the exams, when it came down to exam time there are topics and concepts he had not gone over present on the exam.
I studied with Prof Dan Albas. He helped me in developing my career interests, the study of society, economics and impact on business. He is engaged, funny, and will help students. His exams are hard but reasonable. The key to success is read the assigned reading and study. If you apply yourself you will do well. If not, you will not. Attend class.
Prof Albas means well and is passionate about what he teaches. However, his lectures are all over the place, it's almost impossible to read his writing and he does not set out clear expectations. This proved to be a difficult first year course. Even though he was kind and well respected, it was frustrating being in his class.
he doesnt use power point and his writing on the board is very hard to read, doesnt post anything online including tests scores, grades, lectures, test dates. and he doesnt reply to emails and will ask you to call instead. lectures are hard to follow everyday someone emails class asking if what to study or what he was talking about last class.
loves what he teaches but is very old fashion and doesn't post anything online. tests are super hard and expects you to know every lecture from the beginning of the year till April. Test averages are super low and is definitely not a class for an easy A.
Extremely knowledgeable in his field. He is always welcoming in post-class discussion on the day's material. The class requires attendance and time put in to studying in order to benefit and achieve the best grade. If you float through courses with no effort put in this is not the class for you.
Im a sociology major with a 4.3 GPA. This was hands down the worst course I have ever taken. Half of the time his wife lectures, he expects you to have 100 pages of the text book memorized with extreme attention to detail. He rambles and is not clear about definitions. If I could give a professor 0 I would. He is a nice man but a horrible prof
Dr Albas is a nice man, but I would not take his courses ever again. He does not explain things well and is all over the place during lectures. He had to add 10% to everyone's test grades (all 3, two worth 30% and one 20%) to ensure the majority wouldn't fail. His tests are very tricky and the class average is consistently low throughout the term.
Him & his wife both teach this class. And although they're the sweetest and nicest people, they are simply not good teachers. The lectures are very disorganized and all over the place. The tests are extremely hard and they do not test your knowledge, they test your memorization which is so dumb for sociology. I wish the course had a better layout.
get the textbook!!!!! you will fail without it. tests are really hard, taken from the book word for word so you pretty much have to memorize the readings. they do not really test your knowledge about the course but test your memory and it sucked. all the questions have the same format: select the FALSE option. all of the tests will be like that.
very nice professor who is enthusiastic about his teachings and always willing to answer questions that students have. Course content was interesting but all the exams were very difficult, they followed the same format: multiple choice, select the best false answer and do not truly test our knowledge of the material covered
He is a great prof, he loves the topic he teaches, and comes up with good stories. The grading was easy, just read the textbook and take notes in class and you'll do fine. overall he's a nice person and a good professor
He is a really good prof, and he is very engaging, his stories make the material easy to remember. You have to attend his lectures though if you want to pass. His tests are all multiple choice, At first the tests were difficult, but you will get used to his teaching style over time. I recommend
Dr. Albas and his wife (also Dr. Albas) are very caring and passionate about their field of study. I took SOC1200 and SOC3360, and even though his courses are "old-school" (no online content or PowerPoints), to do well is to simply attend and listen! He gives great examples and goes into so much detail, I found it easy to stay engaged throughout!
