Talks quickly and does the math very fast. so fast that you can't write quick enough. talks about non-math topics. doesn't collect homework. the tests are very unlike the homework. on tests gives trick questions. only math class i failed
worst teacher i ever had
Get yourself a tutor and a huge box of Midol... for him. "Friends don't let friends vote Democratic." ~ Alcan'tteach
This guy is a terrible teacher.

He's a monster! Geez, LOUISE! Where do I start? From working too fast, to giving snide remarks to students when they have questions about the material he just RAN OVER. He's a monster...
He is the best math professor @ MJC. its not high school, its COLLEGE. If you cant handle him then your a retard and you need to drop out of college, instead of complaining about the REAL world. Strongly recommended if u want to succeed at a University
when i had him he would rather talk about the acid rumors about him, and politics than teach, and when he did teach he went soo fast you couldn't catch everything that was said.
can't teach, hes to smart for his own good, take it at another school if possible, oh ya and right-wing politics for your enjoyment.

He expects you to know everything, without actually knowing what you know until you fail his tests
Difficult-high expectations (to the point of a moral issue) Many easier profs but if devoted, youll learn more. Grades based on tests/final-no homework collected. Opinionated. Covers material quickly. Wastes time on off topic rambling. Can be brass/condescending but means well I think. Recommended!
This was the worst teacher I have ever had, ever! He hates explaining things- the worst at helping you understand. He'd rather talk about politics and any other thing. He's pompous, brash, and offensive. There are much, much better math teachers to take, I promise!
I totaly failed his class but I kept going because he's halarious. If you aren't good at math don't take him but if you are you'll love him.
Great teacher. Not easy, but is not supposed to be. A lot of fun, because he has very strong opinions about politics and such. Very funny and cool teacher. He really teaches the material.
He is absolutely the HARDEST math teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I have a B.A. in Math and his 173 class is the only class I have ever failed. Even upper division math classes are easier than his. Don't ever take him for any class, especialy Math 90. Very Very hard. Very Very VERY HARD.....do you get my point???
IF you want to learn math and be prepared for the next level of math, take alcantra. if you want an easy class and not learn****, take someone else.
Excellent professor, we need more poeple like him who hold high standards for learning. He is a brutal teacher, but if you are really here to learn then take his class. If not waste your time somewhere else.
Dan is a cool guy in and outside of class, however, he does have a bad time with talking over everyone. He will constantly repeat "you should know from math 70" which gets annoying. If ur not a math major, dont take him!

I really liked him, although he was so hard.
Don't take this class unless you're smart. If you want to learn solid foundations of trigonometry then this is the class. Once you've had him you'll laugh at the kids in calc who don't know any precalc because they had an easy teacher.
Great Teacher, best that MJC has in math. If you want to learn math, take alcantra. If you want to just pass the class, take someone else. Dont cry about how hes too smart, and how hes too hard because he is not. Great teacher, totally recommneded.
He was the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He made me feel like a complete idiot. I feel like I can't finish college because of him. I'm not kidding.
What a complete closed minded freak of an ****......you idiots that actually said he was a good teacher must be his S.I. representatives. LOSERS! -TEACH, DON'T PREACH!!!!!!
You'll appreciate how much you've learned AFTER you finish the class.. but while you're taking the class, you will dread it. "Hoorah!"
I can not believe that this man is teaching. He is rude, condescending, a vain (in the math sense). If you can not pick up math from the text book you might as well drop him. He doesn't give very many quizzes if at all and his exams are crazy (he wants you to derive the formulas you need to work the problem) AVOID LIKE THE PLAGU!!!
This guy is crazy. He teachers like we all have master degees in math like him. He gets off track really easily too. If you ask a question, he makes you feel dumb. If you a democrat and easily offended, dont take his class either. (i thought he was very funny though)
WOW! This guy is hard and annoying!!! He has terrible lesson plans b/c he starts out with a section and ends up talking about another math class all together. He loves math 122 becaus thats all he talks about in math 90. You can't understand him when he explains the math lesson you have to go home and read the section to get it!
This man is an excellent teacher if you pay attention. He is challenging; however, if you succeed in his class you will succeed anywhere else. All of his classes require the maturity to keep up on your work. Work hard and think about what you are doing and a rewarding grade is easily obtained. It would be a good idea to prepare before the class.
At the beginning of the semester, he is a very hard teacher. He wastes class time on things we didn't understand from higher classes probably because hes bored. As the semsester got longer, & people dropped, he got easier. And he grades his tests on a HUGE curve. Plus, he drops your lowest test grade. The tests are hard but he makes up for it.
hOORAH! - he's a hard teacher. Puts the hardest possible problems on the test. Sets a "curve" - hardly.. highest possible curve pts. is like 3 extra pts.. that's no curve! BUT.. after his class, you will learn a lot -- even with the crappy grade, you'll acknowledge that.
tough but a good teacher
He is a tough teacher to understand, but if you listen to him AND the book, you will have no problem getting through his class. Make sure you do more work than is assigned and attend regularly. He does tend to stray far from the topic of math, but the stuff that he does say math-related is very helpful! Using your text for clarification is a MUST.
Incredible. The best math teacher I have ever taken. Top five most impact teachers of my life. He is with out a doubt the hardest teacher in mathematics ever. However, if you can pass his class, you will succeed if math. Extremely recommended.
Please dont take this teacher, he is etramely hard. His test are super hard, and if u make a major mistakes he puts "major math problem." He was so confusiing i had to read the book in order to understand the chapters. The exam has only 10 problems but those 10 problems are extremely hard. He is a very hard teacher.
he teachs to fast, and is unclear wit directs on test
No explanations./Ask a question and this instructor make you feel retarded!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER..LECTURES NOT CLEAR..HE TOLD THE CLASS I WAS IN IF WE DONT PASS MATH 70 WITH HIM WE SHOULDNT EVEN BE IN COLLEGE BECAUSE EASY...NICE WAY OF CALLING US STUPID
hardest math teacher ever. he picks the hardest problems/ things you never see in class for test questions. i dont recomend this teacher to anyone.
I had him for Math173 and 174. His class was so freaking darn hard. There are only 4 tests and the final, and about 5 questions for each test. I had a B in both classes but I worked really hard. Doing homework, esp the worksheets he passed out. Recommend for success: find his previous class tests.
After having a couple mediocre and downright bad math profs at MJC, this man was a God send. Finally, a professor who made it understandable! Yes, his class is tough, but he's willing to help you. If you regularly skip class or obviously aren't paying attention, be ready for him to be less helpful. He is a GREAT professor for serious students.
Dan is not a professor for students who want to skate through class-- he won't teach you little "tricks" to learn the material, but will rather explain the concept to you in its entirety. He is incredibly competent and expects a lot from his students. Highly recommended for those who are willing to work hard and LEARN.
He is very hard but a genious.
Best professor I ever had. Real life math being taught in a professional manner.
No comment. But i will say that he is pretty helpless.
i usually do not rate a professor, but this guy made me to. i TUTOR math up to 172. I am failing his class with an F. this is while i have an A in both math 171 and 172 (the hardest Cal between 171_174) with j. Johnson (the hardest Inst.) the poblem is this guy teaches from book, ignore the entire class, but his tests are impossible, terribely hard
Mr. Alcantra knows a lot. he has been doing this for 22 years. But when i sit in his class i would rather to gain some of his knowelage throughout the semester; i couldnt. his test is out from space. there is no connection between his lectures or H.W, and his tests. he is the only 173 inst. for other classes you are crazy if you take him, period!!!
So I read these comments before i registered for his class and I did NOT want to take his math 70 class, but I had no other choice. My plan was to just try my hardest but that didnt work. His tests are from outter space, lectures dont make sense, and doesnt collect homework. Dont take his class!! He is by far the worst teacher i have had.
This is by far te worst instructor ever. If you take his class, then you are pretty stupid. He never collects any homework and seems to get pissed off if a student keeps asking questions. if you want to fail, then take his class. He also always looked out the window when he came into class and came to class with his zipper down. NEVER take his clas
Funny Guy but only has 4 tests, dose not collect homework, no extra credit and tests cover 2-3 chapters. Each chapter has 4-8 sections. Does not explain material well, solves problems in his head without showing steps, tests unlike the homework.
Danny Boy aka Baby D is not the best math teacher. He always glared outside the window as he solved math problems in his head. He walked in with his zipper down and made jokes about democrats and Nancy Polosy. If you want a good laugh take his class. If you want to understand the material and move up to math 90 don't take this class.
HARD HARD HARD HARD. He is very unclear because he solves all the problems in his head. Talks a lot about politics.
Took him and regret it. Got an A in math 70 and only passed with a C because I had to spend hours studying the book and teaching myself. His lectures are useless, I never learned anything. He gets many of the problems wrong himself and his notes are very disorganized.
this guy is HORRIBLE, i hate his class. talk about crap a lottt. he does take attendence. after 2 month in his class i figure out y he take attendence because he know that students will not go to his class so he take roll to force student to come to class. i notice there a few good comment about him on here but i believe it himself who put that com
No matter what, don't take this teacher for Math 173. His notes are extremely unorganized. Not helpful at all as to when certain methods should be used. Very poor teacher on a difficult subject.
Terrible teacher. Skips over the parts of a problem that we were having trouble with. Lectures are terrible and does nothing to help build you understanding. Entire class would walk out and try to peace together what had just happened. NO MATTER WHAT LEVEL DO NOT TAKE AN ALCANTRA MATH CLASS!!!!
This guy is all about preparing u for the next level. Sometimes it seems that this desire conflicts with student understanding of current material. Exams are painful if ur fundamental knowledge is not complete. He should NOT be teaching below math 121 where students arent serious. Expect a ridiculous amount of self study. Its the only way out.
I won't deny that he's undeniably good at Math. But he just knows too much for his own good because now it's so easy for him he thinks we're at the same level and sometimes forgets to actually teach us the basics. No strong foundation=crash and burn at this level of math. A lot of self study required which is ok if it's the only class you have.
You need to be in class everyday and you shouldn't have a problem. He explains every chapter and even goes through practice tests with the class.
he defintely loves math.
Don't try to be funny in class. Pay attention in class. Study hard.
Alcantra nice guy, but not very good at lectures and examples. skips steps, he will also make you feel "low" about yourself in class. Also, Just not good at lecture.
Dan Alcantra is mad that he has to teach Math 90. He doesn't care about his students and goes off on political rants and the failing system. Don't take Math 90 with this angry man. He sets his class up for failure.
To all level classes: prepares you for university studies. READ the textbook, understand the concepts, and know how to apply it. Tests are intense, but it is defined "test" for a reason. You are taking a chance with this teacher, but hey, your taking a chance with the whole Math dept. MJC Math be cray, but it makes any other GE class child's play.
Alcantra is probably the best teacher for math in modesto. This guy goes in the hard in the paint. And you're sure to prosper under his guidance.
Dan Alcantra is highly misunderstood. Student at MJC are there for a reason: they either didn't go to a university out of HS (which is fine) or they are lazy. If you think you're going to take his course and be lazy: you WILL FAIL. He is excellent for anyone wanting to be an engineer or math major. He is clear and gives lots of partial credit! A++
Great guy! He has allot of bad reviews, but if you do your homework and go to class you should have no problem! I would take him again!
Great professor and all around awesome guy. His lectures can be a little hard to follow but if you've done the homework, you'll keep up just fine. He's always willing to go back and review if something gives you trouble, and he's very helpful in his office hours as well. Put the work in and you'll get a lot out of his course.
Subject matter for this class was very hard. This guy knows his math for sure. Anything below calculus is too easy for him and he tends to go through it too fast. His tests are difficult, but they cause you to completely learn each chapter! He goes beyond the book. Take this guy if your serious about math.
I constantly wonder whether he likes to teach or not. Doesn't grade homework which only has me wondering where I stand and unsure of my skills until test time. Not allowing us to see where are skills are and where they lack before a test is only hurting the student. He seems lazy and uncaring. Do yourself a favor and take someone who cares.
Dan alcantra is good at math, but he hates math 70 it seems to be too easy for him. He runs through the material with no homework checks and when we finished our 2nd test he told us that there were only 4 test. I would not recommend anyone to take his class because he does not care about his students at all our half class dropped
I have had a bad experience with teachers but not even close to this teacher I took math 70 with him just this January 2014 for spring and oh my he makes you do hw everyday and he doesn't correct or collect it, you will never know if your doing your hw right or wrong. he only grades you on 4 test and a final worst teacher ever.
VERY VERY high standards! I just barely passed, but left his class with a super solid foundation for Math 90. U will NOT pass if you don't do the HW and study. He expects you to act like an adult and follow instructions. But will help when asked. U will WORK for your grade, but thats how it should be! Laziness & partying will get u an easy F.
Probably one of the worst prof. He would ramble on and on about a homework question, taking up to 10 mins, then once he explains how to do it a different way he would say not to worry that he would cover that later on in the semester. There he would waste half of class time, By the end of class I left confused and like I did not learn a thing.
He was a great teacher. Very helpful whenever you have a question he will answer in detail. He is a great teacher all in all but i did not like some things. He tends to put others down in a way by saying that a class should already know this, and it's math 10 material. Made me feel dumb in some ways and i didn't appreciate it. Hw not mandatory!
Alcantra is a really difficult teacher. He expects you to know how to do the math, for example he expects you to remember the work from math 70. When doing example a lot of the time he'll do parts of it in his head which may cause problems if you don't understand. He assigns homework but doesn't, he only grades tests. I would not recommend him.
Very smart, but that doesn't mean he's a good TEACHER. Does most of his work during lectures in his head. The steps he does show in class are fast and hard to grasp. Going to class is useless with him to be frank. You will either learn everything on your own from the book or form tutoring. Tests are HARD and he expects you to have taken math 70.
Alcantra has a really fast paced class. You are expected to study ALOT outside of class. Before going to lecture, you HAVE to have already done your homework and understand the concepts otherwise you'll sit in class really confused. The tests are REALLY hard, but he gives alot of partial credit as long as you show you understand the concepts.
dont procrastinate, study everyday, study ahead before going to lecture, then study after lecture, dont do drugs or drink alcohol because they will dumb you down and slow you down alot, be consistent, cramming for the tests is hard so you have to study everyday to learn everything slowly, ACTUALLY understand the concepts, not just the analytical
Not a good teacher at all. Not helpful. If you struggle with math in any way or aren't too confident, don't choose him. The only credit you earn is through tests and they are very hard. Overall he's not a good teacher at all.
I took him for math 174 and he was alright. His lectures were kinda hard to follow sometimes. It could just be that I was slow. Anyways, I did my homework and studied consistently and the tests weren't that hard if you studied. Overall, he is a good professor, and he expects alot from his students. He is a pretty understandable guy. He's cool.
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had its not even close. I am a math major whose transcript is literally all a's until this class and then a's after literally the only b ive gotten and it was a close b. He disrespects the entire class every class always has time to complain about Obama but never time to go over a hw problem.
To the 14-year-old math prodigy and to math whizzes of all ages: Alcantra is the one for you. One of the most knowledgeable amongst the entire MJC Math Department. A must-take for deep, analytical thinkers. You will meet great minds. Hint for success: You cannot simply memorize steps and formulas. Understanding is key.
Different teachers have different teaching styles; his wasn't for me. I'm mostly here to warn that he LOVED to go off topic; he frequently went on tangents and they were often political (specifically his hatred of H Clinton); it probably didn't help that I took his class during election season, but just a warning.
He can get distracted and go on rants immaterial to the classes. When he teaches and goes through the material, he is smooth. His techniques are good to watch. Can learn a lot from the details of his work. Class is tough but I think he is a generous, fair grader.
Professor Alcantra may give even the brightest student math anxiety. Lectures are fast-paced, homework is heavy, and he grades only tests, but gives partial credit. He makes ample time for asking many questions, and gives review packets composed of past exams. You will know what to expect. Sometimes lectures devolve into asinine rants.
This teacher, is by far the worst I have taken so far. He doesn't really teach he just talks about what he's doing expecting the students to know what he's talking about without proper emphasis on the subject. He does slot of head math not really writing out the steps he does. He also tends to put the class down by closing on the mistakes we make.
This class is not good for students who do not test good. He does not grade homework, only tests. He goes over things fast and doesn't really explain things. He does all his work in his head. He expects his students to already understand what he is teaching. He goes off subject way too much and is very opinionated about everything.
For the first time, I finally understood math. His teaching style fit me so well that i was able to understand all the concepts. He taught me a lot of tricks to make math easier, things the most other professors don't because they just go by what the textbook says. Homework isn't graded but you must do it and ask questions to learn.
This class really depends on you. The professor will teach the minimum to be able to grasp the concept and it will be up to you to study, ask for clarification, and practice to understand the material on the level required to pass the tests. Only tests and a few quizzes are graded but not doing the homework will make the class feel impossible
Lectures arent clear, takes a very long time explaining. Makes lectures very confusing when they could be simplified.
If you want to see what you're really made of, take this professor. He ensures that you can't just memorize the steps of solving problems and that it takes full comprehension. He grades fair but his tests are some of the hardest I've come across but you leave that class knowing more than just material pertaining to math.
He constantly talks off topic to state how much smarter he is. I get it, you're a math major. Also he constantly shares his political opinion about how Hillary is a terrible person. He rarely actually teaches the material, he just answers homework questions. He whines about student's leaving on time while he goes over constantly. Terrible teacher
He spends half the lecture answering homework questions and the other half of the lecture complaining about millennials wanting free education while bragging about how he only paid a $5 fee when we went to CC while barely covering the math. He gets very political too. His tests are extremely hard. He gives out homework but it isn't graded.
One of the worst professors Ive taken at Mjc. He does a lot of math in his head and doesnt even do it step by step. Wastes time ranting about random things and goes off topic, and gets upset if you ask a question because he expects you to know it already. Be prepared for tests as well.
Tough professor, but if you know how to take control of your education and put the time in, you will learn a tremendous amount. A few of us created a study group and used to meet in the cafeteria in the mornings. Mr. Alcantra would stop by with a cup of coffee and check in on us to see if we had any questions. You get out, what you put in.
Worst prof I've ever had. If you want to do well you need to have all of calculus memorized off the top of your head. Extremely political and unprofessional. His reputation is true, you are better off not taking him, or dropping and taking it somewhere else. For reference I got a high B in Calc1 and 2. This class with him is not worth the stress.
Alcantra's 173 and 174 are the big leagues. His reputation precedes him, and while they will be the hardest courses you take at MJC, they will also be the best. Buckle up, DO THE HOMEWORK, and you can be successful in his courses. You get out what you put in, and all the horror stories are from people that didn't put in. Have fun. He grades easy.
Honestly the worst professor at MJC. Makes you feel bad for not remembering things from algebra and trig classes that were taken long before calc 3. His tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard, no correlation to the homework. Talks about politics a lot. Overall, terrible professor. Do not recommend unless you enjoy suffering.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. Thats all I have to say
Very difficult class no doubt, but he really knows math, and will make sure you do too. He is very willing to help, he is not lazy. Tests are BRUTAL so be ready. He grades very fair (40% on tests just for writing your name). Grade is solely based on tests. Yeah he talks politics, but its always brief get over it. I dropped to prevent lowering gpa
Daniel Alcantra is clearly very passionate about his work, but it ends up hurting his lectures. He'll go off on 5 different tangents because he gets distracted trying to tell you something vaguely to do with the topic. You'll have to basically teach yourself since his lectures are so incomprehensible. He's a super lax grader to make up for it.
Do not make the same mistake I did by taking this class. Unless your a math major/genius he could care less about you. Grading was totally unclear. I got a pt. higher for getting concept right vs. someone who didn't answer on an exam. Take math elsewhere unless you're a genius. Nobody cares about what Margaret Thatcher had to say about socialism!
I have a lot of respect for him as a mathematician; he's clearly passionate about his work. He grades generously and almost entirely by conceptual understanding, which I also think is great. However, he's impossible to follow during lectures; I learned almost nothing from them. Your grade is 100%-based on exams, which are incredibly difficult.
Dan is a friendly guy and a lenient grader. It won't help you. The exams are really tough, and that's all he grades. He's also a very proud conservative, and he will make offensive remarks without reserve. I wish he didn't spend half his class talking about politics or Adam (who came here LEGALLY). He will humiliate you with irrelevant quizzes.
This was the worst teacher I have ever had. He frequently went off-topic, going on tangents about how much he hates liberals, telling jokes about minorities, and his personal life. His lectures are just plain confusing and I only passed because of the book, I learned EVERYTHING from the book and nothing from him.
Professor Alcantra is an extremely smart man, but his gatekeeping attitude for the math department is harmful to students. He expects you to learn the subject matter as if you are going to be a mathematics major, rather than prepping students for engineering majors. Taking a math course in the UC system vs with him is such a breath of fresh air.
If this is your only choice for a professor, just dont take the class. Please save your time and hope for an earlier registration date to choose anyone except this professor. I did all the homework and showed up to every single class and tutoring and still failed. He blames the students for not passing! He is rude and just doesnt care if you fail
You will barely pass this class. I was a 4.0 college student until this class, I have put in more than enough hours to pass this class but yet I'm still barely passing this class. Go take calc at Merced community college and not this college. I taught myself everything this semester and even stopped taking notes on the lecture. Grade is 100% tests.
This is the worst professor I have had thus far. He only grades exams, which is understandable, but his exams are too difficult and can't even be compared to the homework. It's like swimming in a pool and then trying to swim up a waterfall. Also, his lectures are disorientating. He doesn't organize his notes well either.
I heard many peers talk about how terrible of a professor he is, and I was naïve enough to ignore the warnings and take his class. His lecture are completely disorienting with no direction. He goes off the top of his head and does not care if students are following along. Grade is 100% based on tests and he chooses the conceptually difficult ones.
If you're enrolled now, drop him and don't look back. Lectures are for people who already know material, he grades based on if he thinks you're an A/B/C/D student. Allows his prejudices to come out and does not care to help. He's an awful professor who shows off instead of lecturing. RUN. DON'T. WALK. FROM HIS CLASS. You've been warned.
Let me start my saying math is far from my strongest subject, however he hardly taught us and if we needed help he told us to watch videos we find on YouTube. He would post another professors lectures instead of making his own. He expected us to know the material before teaching it. He would bring up the election every class instead of teaching.
Probably the worst professor I've taken so far in my college career. As someone who grew up loving math and science Alcantra made me hate it. Class is excessively hard and you will have to teach yourself EVERYTHING. One thing I can say is this was during COVID so maybe he's better in person. I went to a different college to avoid taking him again.
This Professor knows his stuff, and has been teaching for decades. However, his classes are not for the faint of heart. There is a lot to learn, and he goes through it quite quickly. You NEED to do the homework(not graded), and do a lot of studying, to succeed. His tests are some of the hardest I've ever had, but he grades fairly, with some curve.
His lectures are poor. His test are ridiculously hard for no reason, (meant to fail) and I would know because I took ap calculus in high school got an a+ for calc one and two, and passed the ap test. Also, all he talks about is how we dont know anything because of common core and brings up his political beliefs in the middle of lectures.
Absolutely terrible terrible teacher. Tries to teach you about a subject in a way he would explain it to someone who already knew what he was talking about. His teaching style is disjointed and confusing and makes literally no sense. However, if you make it out of his class with an A, you can consider yourself HIGHLY proficient.
Very difficult, but very rewarding. Generous curve, difficult tests. He's been teaching this class for over 30 years and knows his business. You'll learn like never before, but it will take a lot of time. If you want a class to just scrape by with for a requirement, don't take him. If you want to learn, 100% recommend.
If you have a knack for watching a professor ramble on about theory for an hour in the morning from monday to thursday this is the class for you. If you want to read the entire textbook by yourself without any worthwhile explanations by your teacher than this is the class for you.
I regretted it every single minute. He does not care if we follow lectures. There is no place to get help. If you ask him anything it ends with him saying irrelevant views about politics how he used to do things back in the day.He gives lectures on paper and I had to see his hand throughout the semester. In his head, he is still living in the 1900s.
Does not teach any material whatsoever. You will be learning everything from either the textbook or youtube. Test questions include the most difficult questions he could ask. When asking a question, instead of explaining it he will just do the problem and assume you can figure out the rest.
