WRONG SPELLING. If you love inorganic chemistry like I do, you will enjoy this course. DO NOT THINK THIS IS A BIOCHEM COURSE, because it's not. And people who want to take it because they like biology will be disappionted. in this course, you memorize nothing about biology. So be careful.
I dont know that I have seen anyone more excited about chemistry.. he even wore his "heavy metals" shirt. Really friendly, and enthusiastic. Who needs a text book then?
a little condescending
Dr. Leznoff had great energy and is a really good prof. there were 4 quizzes and he marked each one very carefully and wrote lots of notes on each person's quiz. Very helpful guy. Take this course with him he really cares about his students and is a lot of fun.
That's enough of Leznoff Bad unorganized notes and writing
Amazing Prof! Great notes and gives 4 quizzes, which totally make you study and thus remember everything for when the final comes. Best prof to have for Inorganic Chemisrty!
AMAZING PROF! BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD LOVE HIS SENSE OF HUMOUR WHICH I DO NOT GET LOVE HIS WRITING WHICH I CAN'T UNDERSTAND LOVE HIS EASY EXAM WHICH IS NOWHERE CLOSE TO HIS LECTURE CONCENTRATION
his exam are very close to his problem sets.unlike some prof go complete between exam and lecture. if u study u will do good.
One of the best prof's out there in Chemistry. Really good notes, good lecture, wants you to learn! He will sit down with you until you understand the material. Make sure you get this guy!!!!
Great class! I actually looked forward to lectures- his demos and enthusiasm were fun. The material is pretty hard but he makes it interesting and provides SO much extra help before the midterms and final, if you put in the time you'll do great!
Nice guy, tad of a know it all. midterm was average. final was ok. spends too much time on examples. tends to never have time. crammed in nuclear chemistry which was not necessary in the course. the last ten minutes covered a whole chapter
I absolutely loved this class! Professor was very clear in his examples. All exams and assignments were completely fair. Very enthusiastic. I actually looked forward to attending his lectures.
He is a fantastic prof. I absolutely loved going to his lectures, he was fun and interesting. Always helpful and scheduled extra office hours to go over midterms. Absolutely amazing.
Chem 121 was a really difficult course, but Leznoff really was great. He's extremely nerdy and enthusiastic about chemistry, it's awesome. Couldn't think of a better prof for the class. Just study hard and try to keep up with all the concepts.
He is so unorganized and messy. He made everyone think that the test is so easy but at the end the final was too tricky and hard and he put the questions he told us that is not going to be on a test. He didn't even curve the average as he told us he would :/
Best Chemistry prof out there: applies lecture concepts to real- world examples which help me understand the ideas more in depth. Hilarious, extremely smart, and should consider aiming for a Nobel prize award!
The most passionate prof i have ever had, super devoted to his work and always has a big smile on his face. The only problem is that he goes fast, so if you fall behind your screwed. But if you pay attention in class, and i mean PAY ATTENTION, you will do great in his course. Don't slack off and you will be golden. He goes over every single thing.
Very passionate for sure. Explains concepts and material well enough. He goes very fast through the slides, so keep up with the material and you should be fine. The midterm was kinda tricky and not based on lon capa so beware of that.
He's really passionate about chemistry; you can tell. Explains stuff well. The midterm was hard for me, but if you understand everything and maybe make use of the textbook, you should be fine (I didn't do that for the midterm but I did that for the final ((which i found easier)), so there's some advice lol). Also don't fall behind.
Always be sure to read the textbook after lecture. The textbook always clarifies things. Be sure to finish the LON CAPA every week, then get help on how to do the ones that you couldn't complete (assuming you didn't complete all of them). Quantum Mechanics and Thermochem require lots of pre-reading and post lecture reads. He talks fast.
Hello, I was scared of chemistry coming into his class having only having got a 69% in high school ;). This lead me to be very hesitant and scared to take CHEM 121, but I built up my courage and decided to take it. AND WOW, what a professor! He has me on the edge of seat all the time, not only is he a beauty to look at but he also has some brains.
I liked Leznoff a bunch, I thought he was a great guy who was excited about chemistry in general. The course material is heavy and requires many hours to completely grasp. The practice midterm was nothing like the real one, beware of that. Final was easier than the midterm. Do all the homework and read everything a few times over to be successful
Leznoff is amazing!! His lectures are hilarious, and his enthusiasm is contagious! His tests are fair, and notes are well organized and clear. He has plenty of in class demonstrations, which are really cool to see and engaging. I would very highly recommend to take a course with him!
Dr. Leznoff loves chemistry and that shows through his teaching. His lectures are very engaging as he is quite humourous. Chemistry can easily be seen as boring, but he makes it really enjoyable.
Prof Leznoff is really passionate about chemistry and it makes his teaching extremely effective. The Course in general is hard and you have to put in a lot of work, but he is an amazing professor, totally recommend!
Prof Leznoff taught the first half of my chem120 course. Pre-recorded lectures were long but engaging, as he clearly loves what he does. Quizzes were quite difficult considering they're based on LonCapa. NO quiz feedback was given, even with a failing grade on it. Midterm was fair, with some questions copied from homework and the practice exam.
Long lectures, but very engaging and informative. Quizzes were harsh and no solutions posted. Clearly passionate about what he does. Highly recommend taking a course with him if you have the chance!
Prof. Leznoff was awesome. His lectures can be a bit boring, but when he speaks about Chem you can really see how much he loves it. His passion and enthusiasm towards Chemistry really made the course exceptional, and a joy despite its difficulty. Though you're not required to, I recommend reading the textbook because it expands on a lot of topics!
Really nice guy and genuinely loves chemistry. Quizzes are worth more than the final so make sure to take them seriously. Do the assignment questions and textbook questions to study, midterm and final are fair some tricky questions but as long as you understand the material and practice you should do well. Make sure you try to understand concepts.
His lectures were prerecorded in my case, and I could tell he is very passionate, does well in explaining the material and makes it interesting. There is weekly quizzes and homework on top of three lectures a week so if you fall behind, you can't submit a late assignment and it's difficult to catch up.
Prof Leznoff is awesome, his lectures may be long but he does a great job explaining everything. It's clear watching his lectures that he has a passion for teaching and the 'extra' videos he posts are so fun to watch. Keep a note of the questions he points out during lectures, that he hints at because they do show up.
Prof Leznoff is great. He has so much passion and enthusiasm towards the course material. His lectures are very long and heavy on material. I would say his half of the course was a little harder than the second half. The midterm was hard so make sure to do a lot of practice problems.
Prof Leznoff was fine, but not amazing. He taught well enough, although the lectures weren't super entertaining, in my opinion. My least favourite part of the class was not being allowed to see what you did wrong on tests and quizzes.
Love Prof. Leznoff, you can tell how passionate he is and he really is that fun, quirky teacher (he even wears different shirts each lecture that are somehow related to the topic that day) and it's easy to see how much he loves chem. course itself is really material heavy and one complaint is the quizzes, which don't give any feedback at all.
Extremely passionate about chemistry and his enthusiasm is more contagious than the cold. Listening to his lectures was not as painful as someone would expect from a chem lecture. Just stay caught up, because there is so much to learn. A minor inconvenience is that you can't see your quiz results, only the mark itself.
Prof. Leznoff is very passionate about chemistry. Sometimes his lectures went over the allotted 3 x 50 minutes per week. His supplemental lab videos were very interesting to watch. I also looked forward to finding out his shirt of the day.
Very good prof, he makes learning chemistry not a nightmare
Took extreme advantage of online schooling as his lectures ranged from 1-2 hours long, 3x a week. Also midterm had little/nothing to do with concepts taught. Despite the bad I loved his shirts of the day always something new and funny that related to the lecture. Overall would recommend however students have to be on top of his work from day 1
I hate this prof. he legit throws so much information at you in one single lecture and doesn't even explain things. the midterm was similar to the practice and youtube videos really helped me succeed. FINAL EXAM WAS DEATH it was all conceptual stuff from the notes and nothing like the practice so that threw me off. online lectures were 1.5 hr each
such an amazing professor. he's incredibly nice and funny. in his lectures, he has 'show and tell sessions where he'll show cool minerals/ antique items he has. his lectures are long (around 2 hours) but they're super interesting and really well explained. to do well in his class, do the problems in the textbook.
Leznoff is great! However his lectures can range from 30 minutes to over an hour. He says a lot of things that you don't necessarily need to know either.
Here's a professor that loves his job. He makes lectures somehow feel shorter than they are and inspires students to learn more about chemistry. Truly a joy to learn from.
Pre-recorded videos typically were around an hour+. Beware, the practice midterm and final are much easier than the actual exam. I recommend actually going through the textbook even a term before taking this course so you don't overwhelm yourself. The course is tough but doable. His daily shirts were the highlight of the videos :)
One of my favourite profs, he's so passionate about chemistry and makes class fun. Also explains concepts clearly and repeats things that are important/are likely to show up on exams. I'd definitely take another course with him.
the most enthusiastic professor i've ever met. very nice and funny.
Dr. Leznoff is one of the best profs I've had so far. Lectures were interesting and you could tell he has a strong passion for chemistry, especially with his outfits matching the lecture content. Lon capa quizzes and assignments were hard, but the demos were pretty cool and the lectures were too good to skip.
One of the most caring and inspiring professors ever. Made me fall in love with chemistry and rethink my major/future/ Highly recommend attending lectures in person, he is engaging, funny, and exudes enthusiasm. Go to tutorials. Lectures are theory-based, you need tutorials for problem-solving strategies.
Made CHEM120/121 seem a lot less scary than other people made it out to be. He's a great prof and explains everything very thoroughly. I highly recommend doing as many practice problems in the textbook as you can because lectures alone will not help you do well in this class. His exam questions are very similar to textbook questions.
I loved Dr. Leznoff, his lectures were super engaging, and he always made himself available outside class during his office hours where he was excited to help students. I loved his enthusiasm about all the topics he covered, and the way he clearly explained everything. If you want to do well, get the textbook and practice the questions in the book!
I didn't like Chem 120 because I hate chem and I found it very overwhelming with all the text on the lecture slides. The lectures focus on theory, but, we were barely assessed on the theory. The lectures provided minimal help for the weekly homework. I also think the class needs to be revamped because the class averages are always low.
Even though the course was extremely difficult, he still did an incredible job at teaching. He did do a lot of examples that he told us are important for exams. His teaching material did help me understand everything a lot more which made it easier to do those questions. I think it was just too much material ngl but it was very interesting.
Prof Leznoff is the best. He embodies a mad scientist in the best way. His lectures were a little bit slow, but there was always a couple jokes thrown in. He really likes the history what we were learning and I found that helps with my understanding of course concepts. His exam was really fair, just make sure to practice. Go to his office hours
Leznoff is a great prof he is super enthusiastic and his lectures are pretty clear. HOWEVER his lectures are not enough especially if you're not good at chemistry. I HIGHLY suggest reading the textbook, and doing the examples, redoing the LON-CAPA questions multiple times over after doing them, and UNDERSTANDING the fundamental concepts. Good luck
Enthusiastic but lectures are not helpful. don't recommend taking him. bad experience.
the worst.
Pre-lecture readings of concepts and and the textbook is a requirement to succeed. The subject is heavy and difficult and cannot all be covered in lecture time. His recorded lectures, although longer, are extremely helpful as they are more detailed. Homework is more difficult than midterm but there's unlimited resources for homework help.
Danny is super funny and makes lectures interesting, but his midterm was much harder than the practice which was annoying. - Gavester
He's a nice dude and he speaks with a passionate voice during lectures which makes it easier to pay attention. However the lecture material is often complicated and he doesn't do the best job of explaining everything. The midterm was also WAY HARDER than the practice midterm and the class bombed it (47% average).
He gets a lot of flak for the difficulty of the course, which is really outside of his control. It's a lot of material to cover in one course!! You can really tell he loves his job and he loves his students and he makes lectures engaging and as fun as possible. Just be prepared to put a LOT of work into this class, no matter who's teaching it.
biggest pet peeve in this class is the equation sheet. at this point, just memorize the equations.
You can tell he is very educated and a well respected prof, however his lectures are very heavy with confusing concepts with no of background info. He gives a confusing lecture and just throws extensive LON CAPA. Not to mention, our midterm average 47% was the lowest in chem SFU history. The practice midterm was nothin like the exam. Disappointing
47% average on midterm, no scaling.
Unwilling to help with homework questions. He is funny and shows he cares; however, he talks extremely fast, and it gets overwhelming quickly. Does not give very many examples and feels like he just expects you to understand the work. He is passionate about his job, but sometimes it feels like he thinks we are a chore.
He's a nice guy who genuinely wants to help kids learn and I thought I was really absorbing the information as I normally had no issues with the lon capa homework, but the lon capa was WAY easier than the midterm didn't reflect it at all. Feel like the only way to prepare for the midterm would be textbook problems, tutor or ask him for practice
Dr. Leznoff sparked my love for chemistry. You WILL want to have him as your professor, his lectures are extremely engaging, he is a sweetheart, and you can tell that he really enjoys what he is teaching. He posts lots of help videos as well as experiment videos from past terms. Take his class and you won't regret it. 10/10
Very passionate professor, you can go to office hours and ask him about anything that interests you about chemistry. He will give a thoughtful response 100% of the time. CHEM 121 is very difficult and feels like he just needs a few more lectures to fully explain the concepts in the detail he wants to. Do textbook questions and take advice he gives!
He did a good job engaging the class sometimes but the lecture material was very very difficult to understand and he did not scale a midterm with a %47 average for the class. TA's were good though.
This guy was very passionate about chemistry and his lectures were very engaging, but it felt like I didn't learn much from the lectures at all because he would never do any examples of the intense calculation problems the lon capa homework had. Textbook was pretty useless for me and I never really used it and still did pretty well. GO TO TUTORIALS
As this is DEF a weeder class, I was weeded out to say the least. BUT, Dr. Leznoff was a cool guy and provided lots of info but his lectures were dry and was NOT engaging. I wish he suggested practice problems (like Warren did for the 2nd part of course) or made the course easier to follow. TA's were nice and he was, but lectures were a doze off.
Overall, he was a good prof as he was organized and available for help outside class. Make sure to be following along at all times as he does go over things really quickly and it's easy to fall behind. Unfortunately he doesn't do many examples so if you have the textbook try to do the recommended ones. Tutorials helped so much, don't skip those!
Leznoff is super passionate and always had a good time teaching. The content was dull and pretty boring but I don't blame him for that. He didn't go over many examples in class and his slides were awful and filled with a lot of extra useless information. Luckily his explanations were good and that made surviving the dull parts worth it.
This class sucked so bad. I was asleep half of the time in his lectures. He has very dry lectures, doesn't give examples in class but would rather have you watch in your own time. And the TA wasn't that helpful either. I could barely read what was written on the board; they need some budget for whiteboard markers.
Great prof. Not a big chemistry fan but he gives interesting lectures and has an obvious passion for the material and desire to engage. Fair amount of homework (usually there's a discord help server, saved me), but just a really nice and respectable guy.
I am horrible at chemistry (course isnt too bad if your chem skills are strong!) but I was always keen on going to Leznoff's lectures because he makes you wanna be there!! Made me more interested in chemistry than before. Leznoff fun guy, passionate bout them elements. Discord server chat saved my life, do lon capa the moment you get it.
Professor Leznoff is definitely passionate about what he teaches but personally for me, from time to time, I wasn't able to keep up with the material and sometimes I thought he went a little bit fast. He also posted videos on some problem he mentioned in class (but not all). His exams being based on both calculations and some theory questions.
Boring Lectures. Full on nerd. I'm not into it.
He was always entertaining
Leznoff was a good prof, engaging but his tests were so damn hard. The average on the midterm was not even above 50. He doesn't do many examples in class so the homework assignments through Lon Capa take a lot of time. Definitely need to put a lot of effort into studying and preparing for exams. Exams are MC but take a long time.
Leznoff is definitely passionate about what he teaches, but doesn't go over any examples in class, which makes going to tutorials important in order to do well on the midterm.
Prof Leznoff has an obvious deep love for chemistry and spreads that to the students he teaches. While his lectures were difficult to keep up with as they were very content-heavy, they ended up being extremely helpful to fully understanding topics. He also was a very big proponent of the arts and encouraged students to be well rounded people.
He very clearly loves chemistry and cares a lot about students. (He was especially kind to us when protestors entered our lecture hall and shouted at us.) Lectures were difficult to keep up with as they were very content-heavy, but they were ultimately extremely helpful in fully understanding concepts for the midterm. Just study and you'll be fine
He's passionate about chemistry and you can see that in his lectures. However, his lectures can be difficult to understand as he's quicker with teaching the material. Practice problems will save you.
Daniel Leznoff is an amazing prof. His lectures were easy to understand and the content was presented clearly. At the end of his half of the term (the course was co-taught with Jeffrey Warren) he gave this incredible speech about how in uni, you're in the right place to learn literally anything, so do whatever your heart desires. Absolutely 10/10
He is very passionate about chemistry and his lectures had good information and explanations, but there weren't many examples, sometimes making completing homework hard. Be sure to go to tutorial because they will go through examples!
hes a good guy but I wish he did more examples in lectures. he focused a lot on the history of chemistry and wanted us to be very inetersted in that but it didn't help with doing the Lon capa lmao.
Great prof very passionate about what he is teaching. Easy to stay engaged during his lectures.
he is a pretty good prof but a lot of his exam questions are not stuff we covered in class or briefly went over like once or twice. he is a super caring prof and really helpful during office hours
Leznoff is awesome, goes above and beyond to give you tools to succeed. Do the practice questions, utilize the resources he posts before exams. Class has some inherently difficult content but he sets you up for success.
If you're not into chemistry you won't be interested in the lectures but if you are then they will be very engaging and comprehensive for you. Rarely goes over examples in class but the homework is harder than the exams so if you read the chapters and finish the homework you'll be fine. Very caring prof, he always answers questions in lecture.
Wasn't a bad prof, very helpful during office hours but don't learn anything from the lectures so u have to to a bunch of independent reading. Very passionate and knowledgeable, enthusiastic during lectures
doesnt give example problems in class, non curved 47 percent midterm average
Very thoughtful and passionate prof, and a great person. He doesn't do many examples during lectures so read the textbook if you are confused. Do the textbook questions because the midterm is based off of it.
Leznoff is a really awesome person and teacher! However, his exams are nothing like the content in the lectures. It will be the same overarching idea but it will be a different structure, different wording, and different numbers. Cool guy though
He is a good teacher, but doesn't do examples in the lectures which make them harder to understand.
Doesn't wish for his students to succeed at all. Every year they give the same exams that they know majority of the class will fail, and never care to teach by providing examples to change that 47% yearly exam averages. Thinks that by being funny it covers up for trying to purposely fail as many people as possible. Don't ever take a class with him.
Dr. Leznoff made lectures really enjoyable and gave off a good vibe every start of the class via the music videos he would play. They were always specific for the lecture topic and I appreciate his effort to give off these good vibes before delving into the days topics. It was clear that he really had an appreciation for the lessons he was teaching
Prof. Leznoff's passion for chemistry and students doing well is apparent. I really enjoyed his lectures and appreciated his encouragement throughout the semester. His midterm however, is brutal. I think the only way you can expect to do well is if you grind out the textbook and spend a lot of extra time, or are naturally good at chemistry.
professor leznoff is very passionate about chemistry but sometimes in his lectures he speaks a bit fast so it's hard to grasp the topics. he doesn't do examples so it's better to do practice questions by your self. and the midterm was hard asf
He made the class harder than it needs to be. His part of the course was more familiar material from highschool, yet his midterm was worse than the final and was SUPER difficult. He says to do the textbook Qs for practice because they resemble midterms Qs, surprise, they dont! Also he does no examples in class and rambles abt history instead
Leznoff was a really energetic and passionate prof. Loved his personality as he was a fun and caring, however his midterm was tough due to the fact that he didnt do many examples. His lectures were interesting (most of the time) but most importantly he really wanted his students to do well and exceed. A quality that most profs dont have.
Leznoff really likes chemistry but his slides and lectures are not all that helpful. He doesn't show that many examples and his goes over things really fast. My advice would be to read the textbook and understand the concepts yourself and ask any questions to chatgpt. Also do the assigned textbook questions, they will help with the midterm.
A very caring prof but focused his slides more on interesting chemistry facts rather than chemistry itself. Read and do the textbook q to have a better chance of doing good in the class.
He explains things well, but does NO EXAMPLE problems. Unless you have prior Chem knowledge, the midterm will be a slap in the face for you. The tests aren't even hard, but since he doesn't do practice problems in lecture, people never know how to solve them and avoid making the trap errors that he puts in every question. Lezzy,Pls do more examples
Very likeable prof, midterm average was 47%, said they wouldn't curve it and definitely didn't;) Leznoff's Topics are difficult especially with lack of examples. DO THE TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS!!!! do not trust that the practice tests are the same as the tests! Loved the daily music and he explains general concepts well but expects you do the homework!
Dr. Leznoff is so passionate about chemistry and cares about his students. His music every morning was great! It's so sad people think that he is an bad prof due to the sheer difficulty in the first half of the course. His midterm was difficult yes but I think he did that for good reason. Just keep working hard, do loncapa and go to tutorial.
He was teaching in a cool and fun matter but the exams were so heavy and hard, they were not matching the teaching, as well as the homework's that we did.
